NEWS & TIDBITS

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR UTILITY COSTS DOWN THIS WINTER (News USA) – Winter promises the perfect storm for soaring home heating bills. The convergence of surging energy prices, plummeting temperatures and escalating demand means optimal energyefficiency is more challenging and critical than ever. Rising global energy prices hit home with forecasts indicating households could see their bills increase up to 54%, according to The United States Energy Information Administration. Further, forecasters including the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and the Farmer’s Almanac predict a colder-thannormal season. Rounding out this trifecta, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the rise of remote work which is expected to be a more permanent fixture. The good news is that families can prevent a utility-bill blitz by following a few simple tips. With home heating and cooling accounting for nearly half of home energy use, small steps can go a long way.

GET "SMART" ABOUT CLIMATE CONTROL: When it comes to smart home temperature control, there are Smart HVAC Systems and Smart Thermostats. Smart HVAC

systems have built-in Internet capability and can be controlled directly without additional equipment. Smart Home Thermostats create "smart" systems by enabling remote temperature control via a mobile or Internet-connected device or voice-operated home automation system. Try Low-tech Fixes: Simple changes can have a big impact. Take advantage of the sun’s energy to heat your home by opening your south-facing curtains at sunrise to make best use of "passive solar gain." Force down warm air. Denser, cooler air stays closer to the ground, and warmer air rises. So, force it downwards with a low-speed fan. Insulate and fill the gaps. Warmed air leaking out around poorly sealed window frames, power sockets, recessed light fittings, and other gaps is a big source of heat loss in homes. Thick curtains help to insulate glass at windows. If your utility bill is spiking as temperatures dip, a ductless heating and cooling system is definitely a worthwhile investment. Many Fujitsu systems with the Energy Star rating are more than twice as efficient as the minimum standard set by the government. ❁

SELF-CARE ON YOUR SCHEDULE WITH MENTAL WELLNESS APP (NewsUSA) – The challenges of the past two years have raised global stress to unprecedented levels, illuminating the importance of prioritizing mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness month — a time to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to support mental health. This year, let Mental Health Awareness Month serve as a gentle reminder to prioritize your mental well-being and self-care. Yet, finding the time to focus on our health can be a struggle during busy or challenging times. That’s exactly why mental wellness app, Breethe, meets you where you’re at, ensuring self-care becomes a reality and not just a hopeful wish. Breethe’s personalized approach — which easily integrates self-care into your day instead of just adding another item on the to-do list –delivers customized, relatable stress relief right to your phone,"Breethe is personalized for you and your needs. When it comes to wellness and self-care, there is no one-size-fits-all approach," says Breethe co-founder Lynne Goldberg. "The more we can meet someone where they’re at in their day and life, the more lives we can change for the better." Can’t sleep? Feeling anxious? The app’s new "Therapy On-The-Go" feature is designed to figure out why, and gets to know its users

through a series of quick and easy questions rooted in behavioral science. Then, based on this interaction, it provides personalized recommendations — including bite-sized therapy talks, meditations, relaxation practices and hypnotherapy sessions. Additionally, with the "Customize My Day" tab, Breethe helps users sneak in a few minutes of self-care as they go about their day. Choose from a selection of activities, such as starting the day, doing chores, working out, or falling asleep. By setting the times when you typically do the activities, the app recommends what support would serve you best at that specific time. Finally, Breethe is all about real help for your life — it offers relatable tools for (very!) specific everyday situations, such as "My Boss is a Jerk" and "My Family Drives Me Nuts," making the app even more accessible, timely and friendly. This approach differentiates Breethe from other wellness apps because users need not sift through content libraries in search of the right tools. Instead, Breethe provides a personalized experience that delivers the most appropriate content to users on demand, just the solution for busy lives. As the Breethe team explains, "it’s like having a best friend and life coach in your pocket." Visit breethe.com for more information, and for a two-week free trial. ❁

NATURE’S SANCTUARY By Holly Wilmeth, creator of the Sacred Nature Oracle

WINTER 2022 | 13

I CLOSE MY EYES AND NOTICE MY BREATH. I place my hand over my heart as my anchor. I feel and see my bare feet gently touching the vibrant moss in the forest of the Pacific Northwest. My breathing slows down, and my body feels calm and nourished through this visual memory. In this forest, the air is filled with moisture from the sea and abundant rain; the ground is lush, covered in salal (Gaultheria shallon), ferns (Polypodiopsida), and moss (Bryophyta). I have read that fern are some of our first plant families to appear on the earth. I take a deep breath and remember that this plant is here to engage and remind

14 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

us of how much this earth helps sustain our well-being. Ferns, lush and vibrant green, calls us into the present moment by asking that we be generous with our attention and gratitude. It is temperate, misty, and silent, except for the occasional hawk and owl call. I can hear in the distance the ocean waves crashing on cliffs, the awestriking image of where the forest meets the sea. The forest is alive, and I feel the breath of Mother Earth. The silence is alive with life. I am surrounded by old grove trees, like douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and Western red cedars (Thuja plicata) and my

feet are touching moss that is covering a whole world of connected mycelium and root systems. The douglas fir has taught me through its grounding energy to invite humility by asking me to acknowledge where I stand and extend gratitude to all those who have helped me be here. Looming large, the douglas fir grows tall toward the sunlight, thanks to its ability to share nutrients underground. Its great stature is built from widely dispersed systems of support, versus a deep-rooted individuality—a vivid reminder that stability relies on the strength of our connections and communities.

Mother Nature, as a guide in discovering a deeper relationship with my truest essence of self. When I am not taking a walk in nature, this is my home away from home, my sanctuary. Nature has the power and wisdom to create this space for ourselves, to create a sacred sanctuary where we can learn and be one with the earth.

I am standing in the church of nature, a sacred space—a sanctuary—where the energy of the canopy of leaves is slowly draping my body as my breathing matches that of the forest. I remember my interconnectedness to the earth, to the plants and the animals. My breathing slows down and I breath gratitude into my heart.

A few years ago, I was taking a walk in a forest, just like the one I described. It was then that I first came across a plant I did not know by the name of usnea (Parmeliaceae). I’ve learned since then that usnea is a type of lichen that grows on trees in the forests of northern North America and Europe. Known as the lungs of the forest, usnea is a plant that is very sensitive to air pollution, thriving in areas least impacted by the toxic output of industrial civilization. I love this plant because when I see it on my walks, I am reminded to take a moment in silence and to listen to my breath. Its energy also reminds us that breath will lead to the clarity you seek.

This is the image I conjure when I want to slow down my breathing and be in the energy of my heart. It is the image I call if I am going into a stressful situation or just came out of one. This visualization helps remind and awaken my innate bond with

I did not always love the earth with the admiration I do now. I’ve been in this school for only the last decade, marveling and gasping as I turn a new corner and discover something new. Growing up, my father was a farmer, and on the two-hour

hot drives to his farm near the Pacific Coast in Guatemala, he taught me all about the crops we were passing: tabacco, sorghum, cotton, sugar cane, vegetables, and fruits, and then taught me some of the names of the trees as well. Nature represented our livelihood; it was either a good year or a bad year, and nature could be wild and unpredictable. I remember unconsciously learning that nature needed to be tamed for my family’s prosperity. I wasn’t around people who loved nature for its wisdom and spiritual healing properties as that came much later in my life. But nature has been a loyal companion and friend, hoping I would hear its whisper calling me home.

essence of bougainvillea (Bougainvillea glabra) reminded me that on this path of transformation, you can discover not only true delight, but also the joy of inner healing. Bougainvillea brings us hope amid the challenges and many complications we face in life.

That first sabbatical on the coast reignited my desire to create and reimagine images and creative living, only this time in balance with nature. The only activity I did was led by my curiosity of all the dead turtle bones I was finding, learning to clean the bones, and the symbolism behind power animals. The images I took from this “pause” in my busy life taught me about working with “sacred intention” and to At the peak of my career, in my midslowly start healing my relationship with thirties, I got physically sick from overworking and was burned out. I loved nature and myself. Twelve years later, we still go to the ocean to practice this quiet what I was doing, but my lifestyle was out of balance, and my body had suffered time in our lives, and the photography I do is guided and inspired by nature. the consequences. Something called my husband Sky and I to take a threemonth sabbatical on the coast of Oaxaca About five years later, when my son was three, I could feel nature once where there was no internet. It is funny, neither one of us was an ocean swimmer again calling me back home to discover a deeper relationship with my truest or sunbather, but we knew the sea air essence of self. While we were wintering would do us good. We slept, sang, and practiced a morning routine of drawing. on the coast of Mexico, I could feel myself falling in love with nature again, We took the time to not do very much pulled by the awe of my son’s curiosity. except to live and listen to the rythmns I was enthralled as he was. Nature of nature, of the ocean waves, and to presented itself first by showing me heal. We would watch every sunrise empty turtle shells. I would collect them, and sunset and watch the turtles, flying talk with my son about them, and put mantarays, dolphins, and whales swim them on our altar. Then, more bones by. This time healed and nurtured my showed up, seeds of jungle fruit, etc.… soul, body, and mind. I found that the

all this lay on our altar. As I started to be curious about my surroundings, I could feel my soul wanting to be playful again. I could feel my creativity wanting to explore and learn. I was being taught by nature and our interconnectedness to journey back to wholeness. Over the years I have become aware of the healing properties in setting a daily intention with nature’s gifts be it through a walk, reading an oracle card, listening to sounds of birds, breathing gratitude into my heart, the list goes on. My love for this relationship has awakened in me a deeper love for all beings and what it means to live in reverence for life. I invite you to write or share your story of how nature is or has transformed your life. Can you remember the first tree you hugged, or swung on, or really noticed? Start with a childhood memory where nature is at the front of your vision and let yourself be guided by this visualization. I like to imagine we each are covered by a life quilt of woven interconnections and nature has always been part of it. ❁

The Tale of Three Women, But what if you do not have any sisters? PART II OF III BY AMY GILLESPIE DOUGHERTY

WINTER 2022 | 23

In my world of ancestral eye reading, I know that the markings in the eyes are visible within three days of birth. The patterns in sibling rivalry were one of the key aspects that drove me further in my studying: How could someone have an indicator in sibling rivalry when they were the oldest child? This aspect was true whether I was looking at the eyes of a man or a woman. It just did not make sense to me. How could the markings of sibling rivalry be present within three days of birth, if the individual were the oldest child or was an only child?

• Would their eyes change as they gained siblings? • What if they did not have any siblings? • If a sibling died, would their eyes change back? I simply had to know more. I realized that this key to reading eyes was something that had to be on the legend of the map – the key to how to read eyes, all indicators. As I

24 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

continued my studies, it soon became clear, the markings in the eyes were there at three days of birth, and this was just one more affirmation that the markings were the map of the epigenetic situations of our ancestors. What we were seeing was our ancestor’s experience of sibling rivalry with sisters. Keep in mind, that markings in the left eye (where we find sibling rivalry and trauma with girls/sisters) was also the marking of things related to the aspects of the right brain. While this was the indicator of sibling rivalry with sisters, it was also the marking of creative rivalry or a female-competitive environment or even spiritual rivalry and competition. As clients would tell me, “But, I don’t have any sisters, I’m an only child” or “I get along great with my sisters,” I began to ask more questions.

WINTER 2022 | 25

“Have you ever found yourself in a female-competitive environment? such as being a nurse with a charge nurse? Working in a hair salon or cleaning hotel rooms? Or vying for a part in a play? Competing for a chair in band, choir, or theater?” The nodding heads confirmed what I already knew to be true. A marking for sibling rivalry with girls was the pattern of our ancestors, and like all patterns, it would show up in whatever way it could (to be resolved or healed during our lifetime) just as it had played out in the world of our ancestors.

Here are examples of how this could show up in your life: • You continually find yourself the victim of childish jealousy comments, “How come (insert your name) always gets ____?”

experience of creative competition (vying for a part in a play, art, band, ice skating, dance, etc.)

• You grew up with a sibling (especially a sister) with a handicap that you were teased about

• You find yourself in a female competitive environment (hair salon, nursing station, or creative arts)

• You experienced the trauma of the death of a sister (or one in a feminine role)

• You are a twin or sister of girls, where there is a feeling of a favorite (not you)

• You struggled with your own innerfeminine (as a man or a woman)

• You or your daughters find yourself in the throes of jealousy or rivalry with girls

• You had a dramatic or traumatic

26 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

Whatever the dynamics are of your experience – it will match that of your ancestors, even if you do not know the story. Therefore, if you have had a situation of a best friend (a girlfriend) relationship coming apart, at a wedding, over a conversation about religion, over winning a part, role, or job position, or even a boyfriend – then you are in the heat of the ancestral pattern, “Sibling rivalry with girls.” Because this shows up in the left eye, it can also represent spiritual rivalry – even if it is between men. Two ministers in the same town, fighting over a parishioner, or making a stand about a church value, fits just as easily into this ancestral trauma pattern. The trick is always to find the eye of the hurricane…. that moment when the storm is swirling, when all the possible options are swirling about you. If you are in tears, practicing the conversation in your mind, or yelling and complaining about a situation (in your mind, or aloud), you are in the eye of the ancestral hurricane.

You can learn more on the Ancestors Within Community on Facebook or at the free upcoming Online Ancestral Summit (101 Voices and Perspectives of Ancestral Connection) from November 7-11 of 2022.

In that brief moment, you have the opportunity to choose if you will heal and resolve this pattern, or infuse it

WINTER 2022 | 27

"...Pick up the phone your ancestors did not have – send that text or voicemail or email that your ancestors could not, and resolve it today."

with more energy, trauma, and drama for it to continue to play out in future generations. Whether you have children or not, this pattern will continue to play out in the family – be that through great grandnieces and nephews or actual grandchildren. This is how it works – you have this opportunity in this moment to choose a new outcome – to let go of an old pattern – to heal that which has created such angst within your family lines and to say, “This no longer threatens us. This no longer creates drama or trauma in our lives.”

28 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

In that moment of choosing to let go – to choose a modality of today to heal the pattern, such as using a cell phone, email, or other means-of-today to resolve a pattern, (anything you use that your ancestors didn’t have available to them, such as CPR) will signal to your cells that you are now in a new environment. You now live in a world where this old pattern does not threaten you anymore, no longer creating drama and trauma for you and your family, you have lessened the pattern for all of the future generations. If you do not recognize this pattern in your own world, you can certainly see it in those around you. You recognize

that your neighbor is always getting into competitive situations with girlfriends or has just gone through a big trauma with a childhood friend or their actual sister. Help them to recognize that this could be an ancestral moment that is simply available for healing. They are quite likely experiencing a situation of their ancestors, in order to reaffirm it is still a trauma, while giving them a chance to resolve it for future generations.

For just a few moments, think back and remember your own situations of a female competitive environment, and even if you have the closest sisters in the world, look to the situations of your girlfriends, your daughters and their friends, or your own femalecompetitive-environments and see if there is an opportunity for healing and resolving them today. (If you look in your eyes, this marking is in your left eye (between 4-5:00). Pick up the phone your ancestors did not have – send that text or voicemail or email that your ancestors could not, and resolve it today. ❁

Tai Chi for Awareness by Chuck Kruse

Tai Chi has been credited with everything from relaxation to enlightenment, and all points between. Undoubtedly, the people who have made those endorsements did find Tai Chi to be helpful in so many ways. We all know the story of how Tai Chi came to the modern world; When the Communists took over China, they were faced with millions of people who needed to be kept healthy. The government forces "convinced" the Tai Chi masters to reveal their secrets. Those secrets were distilled down to the "24 form", and taught widely. Today, if you go to a city park in China you are likely to find groups doing this form, and reaping the health benefits, daily. In our times, Chi Kung, and its branch Tai Chi, have been studied in the laboratory to see if the science behind the undeniable benefits could be discovered. It has been determined that Chi Kung and Tai Chi work by harmonizing the breath, mental focus, and slow movements. One of the most exciting results of this analysis has been finding that the exact slow movements do not matter so much. It is the trifecta of mental focus, synchronized breathing, and slow movements that causes the benefits to accrue.

WINTER 2022 | 33

When I was studying Tai Chi my teacher showed me a movement and then said, “You could get everything from Tai Chi with this one move!" How could that be? Do I have to learn a long form? Three long forms. Well, it looks like my old teacher understood what modern science is just now telling us; It is the focus, breathing, and slow movement. Not the plethora of movements. One movement, mastered and done well, is worth more than hundreds of movements done halfway. I hope you are seeing what freedom and liberty this understanding can bring to you! I am in no way saying that there is not benefit from a tai chi class taught by a good instructor, but I am saying that you do not have to wait until you have the free time, money, and opportunity to attend that class to benefit from Tai Chi. As you might have expected, you have within you the ability to improve yourself. Why not get started? There is a temple in Japan that was famous for introducing pilgrims to what they needed most in order to achieve their goals. This temple was high up in the hills and the path was not too well kept. In fact, it was downright hard. Once the pilgrim got to the gate, s/he would have to knock to enter. The gatekeeper would open up and in you go. Walking through the courtyard, a monk, or priest, or whoever he was would come up and ask what you wish. 34 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

"I want to find out what I need, or WHO I need to help me" With one of those small, imperceptible smiles that only a temple resident can give, he moves further in, and waves for you to follow. You both climb a long staircase made of hewn stone, flanked by statues of wild animals. Finally, you pant your way to the top. "Are you ready to look inside?" our monk asked, "Some have found the answer to their dreams, and some have gone insane because of what they saw. Are you ready?" You came so far, went through so much, you cannot turn back now so you shake your head yes. The monk unlocks the heavy wooden doors and motions for you to enter. You walk in, your eyes adjusting to the dim light of the sun as it filters through cracks in the building. Before you is a small hutch with a door. You open the door and there before you is your own face reflected in a mirror. There is a saying, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear". Perhaps the teacher has appeared, in your bathroom mirror, this morning.... OK, let us get down to it and start! Take a look at Figure One. Stand up, hands at your sides, feet about shoulder width apart, head facing forward. Your feet should be pointing straight ahead, not splayed out. Take a minute to focus, slow down your breathing,

and settle. Focus on what you want to see happen in your practice. Improved health? Better physical abilities? Sharper mind? All is possible. Focus. Now, using Figure Two as a guide, begin to raise your arms up in front of you. As you raise them, breathe in. To start, breathe however feels right. Nose, mouth, no matter. All will be refined with time. Just be sure you are synchronizing the breathing with the movement. Raise your arms up to the middle of your chest, no higher. Your inhale should be finished as you reach the high point. Then slowly lower the arms back down. As you lower them, exhale. The exhale should be completed

as your arms return to your sides. You have performed the basic movement! How many repetitions you do is up to you and how your energy is flowing on that particular day. There are refinements. If you are able, you can include your knees and push up as your arms rise, and drop down as the arms lower. This needs to be a very subtle raise and lower, just an inch or so. You will find that moving the whole body increases the effect of the work. A Tai Chi maxim is 'when one-part moves, all parts move' and the idea behind this is to further integrate your whole self into what you are doing.

Awakening Your Spiritual &

Psychic Abilities By Dana Jefferson, C.Ht., Ph.D., CAHA

Falling asleep one night while listening to a recording of the show, Ancient Aliens, I heard a discussion about the great psychic seer, Nostradamus. He He was not always a container of amazing prophecies. He was a physician during a pandemic where he was unable to save his own wife and children. After their death, he went missing from the historical record for numerous years. It was after dealing with this great heartache and trauma that his gifts of prophecy suddenly appeared. Having

the gift of prophecy was definitely a sign of psychic awakening. Before proceeding further, many delineate between spiritual awakening and psychic awakening. Psychic awakening, like Nostradamus above, I associate with opening of the pineal gland or Third Eye, while spiritual awakening is about opening the heart. Psychic awakening allows communication with animals, spirit guides, those who have died, etc. Psychic awakening, like spiritual awakening, is available to all individuals with practice or through an extreme event (such as losing your entire family which happened

to Nostradamus). As a member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), I receive daily messages from the work of Edgar Cayce. Edgar Cayce was a clairvoyant known as the Sleeping Prophet. His messages are the basis for numerous books still in publication. This year, I received the following Edgar Cayce message applicable to this topic:

"(Q) What is the exact means or method by which I can consciously reach the divine power or psychic force that is within me and draw upon it for the knowledge, strength, power and direction to accomplish great deeds that will bring about desired ends? (A) This lies latent, of course, within self. First find deep within self that purpose, that ideal to which you would attain." While Edgar Cayce confirms that psychic abilities are latent within each of us, it is intriguing that he states that we should first find the purpose for developing such powers. Bringing in psychic abilities without a higher purpose is both a waste of energy and

can be dangerous. One of my teachers continually discussed both using psychic abilities for the higher good and how it can damage you physically. Yogis talk about bringing up kundalini in the physical body. Kundalini is an energy, usually thought of as divine feminine energy, which is located at the base of the spine. It can be awakened through different types of practices leading to awakening. The kundalini, when it rises, goes through both the heart and Third Eye chakras providing double duty for both psychic and spiritual awakening. My teacher said this could be dangerous if all aspects of you are not fully prepared to hold this energy. Think of an electrical circuit that is built to run a specific amount and type of current. If that circuit is overloaded, it can explode. This is why we need to be careful when developing psychic abilities. Reputable teachers will work with you to clear yourself (physically, emotionally, etc.) and to have a solid egoless purpose before attempting advanced awakening work. Do not worry if you do not yet have a teacher to assist you. It has been said that when the student is ready that the teacher will appear. That has happened in my life repeatedly as I was ready for the next steps in my own process. If your teacher has not appeared yet, just keep an eye out and let the universe know that you are ready to welcome such a teacher.

WINTER 2022 | 43

I do want to give a word of warning when you are in the process of obtaining your teacher. Over the years, I have witnessed teachers being obsessed with money, power, and sex. If you see these signs in a teacher either run away or wait until they have successfully passed that stage in their own development. Teachers not obsessed with money will often have reasonable rates and charge for private sessions or teaching but often not both. Teachers not obsessed with sex or power will make you comfortable and will not ask you to do anything you find unethical. I have been lucky over the years to escape the bad teacher trap to which many on the spiritual path fall victim. One of my teachers described me as a spiritual butterfly checking the nectar in many systems. He said this trait would prevent me from falling prey to any unscrupulous “guru.” Use your instincts, and do not fall prey to a handsome exterior or a celebrity status. Whether it is psychic or spiritual awakening or both that is your end goal, what are the steps you can take towards such achievement? There are some steps that work which are NOT recommended.

E A physical near-death experience can often lead to an awakening, but unless this happens naturally, do not try to seek such a thing. Never put yourself in unnecessary danger especially since 44 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

this does not always work. I know an individual that brags (bad sign right there) about his spiritual awakening after a near-death experience. This same individual consistently blames others for his issues and does fat shaming. I would not call this awakened behavior.

E Like Nostradamus, you can lose all your loved ones and go wandering for years. Actually, the wandering part can be helpful as will be described later but awakening at the expense of losing your loved ones should not ever enter your thoughts. E There are myths and literature about selling one’s soul to the devil in exchange for whatever is desired such as psychic and spiritual powers. I personally do not believe in the devil. For those that do, remember those myths and literature usually end up with the mortal getting the bad end of the deal. There are recommended steps that can be taken for psychic and spiritual awakening in addition to finding an appropriate teacher as previous described.

E A vision quest, under

experienced supervision, can be a great way for awakenings

to happen. The solitary time in nature, with just water and without technology, can set the stage for amazing awakening experiences. A “walkabout” in the Aboriginal culture works in a similar way.

E Meditation can be helpful. Spending a short time in meditation each day is useful for many things including stress reduction. For meditation to facilitate awakenings, a more concentrated focus such as a weekend silent retreat is typically required. The longer and deeper you can go into the meditative state, the more likely you will obtain your awakening goals. E Other steps that can induce awakening or at least begin that process include sensory deprivation such as a lengthy time in a floatation tank; decluttering in a mindful way; examining your belief systems; reading books about the awakening process; going to therapy or doing shadow work; use mind altering drugs such as ayahuasca under the supervision of

a legitimate indigenous practitioner; training in helpful tools such as the use of a pendulum, etc. Across the globe, the variety of tools and experiences is vast. In the shamanic world, we always emphasize intention. If you have an intention to awaken, then just be open to the path shown to you. The universe will assist you in the process if your intention is clear and your heart is pure. Sometimes awakenings can manifest from the simplest of experiences. You can be looking at a plant in your yard one minute and the next moment, you are seeing the internal structure of that plant as it appears to glow. You can be gazing at your beloved and see and feel all the oneness of the world in that one look. Unfortunately, awakenings may be shortlived. The insight and abilities that you experience in one particular moment of time can be fleeting. There is a Zen proverb that talks about chopping wood and carrying water before enlightenment. That same proverb talks about life after enlightenment also being about chopping wood and carrying water. There are many

WINTER 2022 | 45

interpretations given by scholars about the true meaning of this proverb. For me, it means that life after awakening means returning to the daily routine. You return with the knowledge and memory of the awakening which changes everything while the daily routine remains the same. As time goes by, the knowledge and memory of the awakening can fade. This is why even extreme techniques of awakening such as near-death experiences can lose their impact over time. You may still have a memory fragment, but you may no longer feel the experience the same way as time passes. At this point, you may set an intention to experience a new awakening moment. It may only require the most unassuming event such as seeing a hummingbird in a place where

hummingbirds are not expected. Hummingbirds were part of your initial awakening experience and just the sight of a hummingbird brings back those initial feelings. I am sure there are some individuals that live a lifetime without any awakening experiences. I find that thought extremely sad. Life should be full of awakening experiences. It does.’ mean that you must have an awakening that allows you to talk to the dead or that can provide special sight to see where an individual might have a tumor in their body. It does mean that having an intention to fully experience the oneness of everything should be on everyone’s bucket list. That awakening will change how you interact with the world.❁

Unlocking the Hidden Doors to Your Past Life Awareness Dr. Moon Eir, CCH Mildly unnerving is the venture one can take while on the path towards enlightenment. Such a journey can cause one to have grappling questions that provoke deep thought and ponderment. But there is also an element of magical wonderment and adulation for the answers that do arise like falling leaves from the many branches of a tree.

Not to mention, the boundless avenues you can take with this kind of adventure. The experience alone is like riding a roller coaster. The question is… which avenue does your soul go towards? Do you suddenly find yourself diving into a pool of crystal energy and magical metaphysical abundance? Buying as many mystical things you can get your hands on? yourself. Who are you? Why you are here on earth. Or maybe you have fallen far away from religion and now find yourself on an intriguing quest to find out what else is out there. A profound feeling of wanting to de-program what you grew up learning for a new path of insight and recognition. My metaphysical apothecary shop has become a safe haven for such individuals to find the answers they seek. So, it was no surprise that one sunny day a young girl found herself walking through my shop doors with inquisitive interest. Like a curious child analyzing a new toy, she examined all the glittery, sparkling gems on the shelves. But even though this is the reason she came to the shop; it was not the main focus of her awakening. A few months before she began her journey with crystals, her mind tailored towards an intriguing desire to know more about who she was as a soul on a human expedition. This made her become a wanderer in her own exploration of understanding. Like a nomad seeking refuge or sanctuary, she roamed far and wide within her psyche for the clarifying results to the many floating questions that plagued her mind.

Her spiritual awakening focused more on her soul’s traveling through lifetimes as her soul woke to the awareness that she is more than this physical body. She felt the spirit inside her coming alive and the more she went down the rabbit hole seeking answers as to why, she fell even deeper into her past life memories. Image after image. Vision after vision. It all played out so clearly in her consciousness like a repeated video. The countless feelings that followed were immensely strong. She knew there was no denying these memories were real. The deeper she went on this path, the stronger the emotions grudged up more memories to the surface. Recollections she became very disturbed by for they lead to great sadness and regret.

As she stood in my shop, I saw the hundreds of many lives shimmering behind her like an accordion. As she explained these memories, the life that gave her soul affliction was one that even I would be weary of speaking upon. Hitler’s wife, Eva Braun! Just as she was meeting me for the first time in my own shop, Eva met Hitler at a photographer store in 1929 when

she was 17 years old, and he was 40. Like any wide-eyed girl, Eva was far too interested in makeup, boys, and clothes. She was not too engrossed in earning good grades in her studies. The couple quickly became devoted to each other. Even though a lot of their involvement with each other was kept secret and out of sight from any public onlookers due to her father’s disapproval of the bond they shared. Even though Braun showed great loyalty to Hitler, she tried committing suicide a few times. She felt her soul did not belong in this time and wanted to go back home to remove herself from the darkness that surrounded her at every corner. Hitler catered to her by funding an apartment close to him where she enjoyed many activities like sunbathing, swimming, skiing and more and finally remained composed during that time. Life became more tranquil for her but deep down that unsettling remained, even into this lifetime. I believe Braun was loyal to the soul of Hitler but was perturbed by his physical actions and the events he created that cause immense agony, suffering, and loss to so many. As she stood with her head down and tears descending from her face, I could clearly see that life still induced torment and struggle that stirred deep within her. Her soul desired reprieve from the evil circumstance that caused her life to learn a hard lesson. Every life lived is a collective journey

of various degrees of learning we can master along the way and this sweet, young girl is an impressive example of that. Whether or not that learning is good or bad, it still provides vast amounts of wisdom. We accumulate layers of experience and knowledge with each situation, event, circumstance, and moment in time. Not every life is meant to be a magical affair. In order to truly cherish the wonderful moments in each and every life, we must also endure the much more darker moments as well. When a memory surfaces, it usually means the soul is not ready to let go of what happened and seeks ways to pick at the wounds of trauma until it understands why the lesion appeared in the first place. What brought them to that situation? Why can they not get over it? Why is it so hard for them to move on consciously from it? Sometimes issues that arise from our past lives can fully affect us in our current life. Especially, when there are unresolved matters that plague the mind of memories. This life and all others before this. However, there is an underlining recognition that all is happening for a reason. Then an abrupt undertaking begins to develop, and you find yourself in the midst of unresolved energy that finally demands your attention. There is no going back now! When you find yourself on this miraculous expedition of soul awakening, it is accepted by the soul WINTER 2022 | 51

that all past unsettled learning be overcome in order to move forward with more new learning. Kind of like renovating a room. The room being the conscious mind, we begin by wiping it down and carefully but also compassionately cleaning it of all unwanted, toxic debris of stagnant past life memories. We then start the process of painting it with fresh new colorful forgiveness paint and choosing the perfect energy furniture and vibrational decor that looks and feels cozy to the mind. These new pieces pull the room together in a new perspective of insight and as we open the windows to allow new light in, we find ourselves adventuring into a new realm of excitement and intrigue just like the feeling we get when we work hard cleaning a room. Standing back and admiring all the hard work involved to achieve the feeling of cozy and inviting is the exact moment we finally understand why it all had to happen in order to bring us to where we need to be right now. There are reasons why you have talents and abilities that seem too

familiar, like riding a bike. To imagine you have been here on earth before and display such skills throughout millennia, shows the evolutionary soul development that having past lives installs upon you. But did you know the number one symptom that evolution causes to a soul where it is deeply feeling a loss of something but can’t quite figure it out or even when it was lost? This feeling can start to present a suggestion in the mind that the pain maybe coming from a mysterious loss which can be found deeply lodged somewhere inside, hidden away, but slowly climbing out from a submerged, buried past life. This can be linked and related as a physical confusion that one may feel from losing a dearly, departed loved one. If you can relate to this kind of symptom of awareness, keeping a Unakite with you all day and placing it on your side table while you sleep, will unhinge the secured doors, and unlock the answers you seek by placing you in the right dream experiences. kind of fully understood acceptance that all will be done as planned by all souls involved so all can learn from the many faceted degrees and stages of learning.

Sometimes, like our young girl mentioned above, we place ourselves in lives where we have committed acts of regret that hinder our soul progression to awareness and even hold onto past life karmatic grudges that keep us from connecting to the people in our lives that we need to learn from the most. In order to let go of those karmatic obsessions, keeping both Chrysoprase and Rhodochrosite with you can also be a powerful emotional release that focuses on the energies of forgiveness, healing, and stimulated peaceful acceptance. The goal here is to achieve spiritual awareness enlightenment by understanding that karma is meant to be studied and examined to gain insight and further the soul’s spiritual culture and expand on the spiritual literature of each past life experiences. It is not meant to be obsessed over and regretted to the point of depression and sorrow. It all happens as it should. K

ey nine of the tarot’s Major Arcana is The Hermit. The Hermit is usually depicted as an old man, with a long beard. Old signifies wise. He has wisdom obtained through a long life and many travels, both internal and external. In the iconic Rider-Waite-Smith deck, designed by Pamela Colman Smith and published in 1909, he is standing on the top of a mountain, no doubt the same mountain that when he was the young Fool, key 0, he jumped off of with faith and naivety. The Hermit is

cloaked and has a walking stick, no doubt a repurposed wand of passion from the minor arcana. Those things in life that ignite us guide us throughout out days. He is dressed to continue his travels as we never stop learning especially about ourselves.

SUMMER WINTER 2022 | 59

The Hermit card of the Ellis Tarot, shown here with permission, has the Hermit sitting on a tortoise. The tortoise reemphasizes wisdom and the knowledge that comes from a long life. Also, no matter how much our journey may slow down it always continues, even if a tortoise is our transportation of choice. There comes a time when we know longer need the speed of the Chariot, a slow and steady 0.63 miles an hour reptile is fine enough. The Hermit can be seen as having a close relationship with card five, the Hierophant. The Hierophant is the card of the teacher and mentor, often a spiritual or religious leader but it does not have to be, we learn life lessons from all types of people. The Hermit is the Hierophant after he retires, instead of moving to Florida, he takes himself up to the mountains, a place of quiet, naturally suited to contemplation, especially on snowy nights. Once he retries the Hierophant no longer needs to hold classes and recruit students. The Hermit waits for those who need him to find him. They find him through the light of his lantern not through an institution or college catalog. He does not even necessarily care if they find him at all. Sharing his knowledge is no longer his vocation, thought it remain an avocation. The lantern is an important symbol in the Hermit card. The Hermit usually has a lantern, and he quietly stands, or sits on his tortoise, holding it aloft. The lantern is his knowledge, his truth, everything he has learned throughout his life. In the RiderWaite-Smith a 6-pointed star, the Seal of Solomon, the wisest of the old testament

kings, is clearly visible as the source of the lantern’s light. The lantern also assists the aged Fool, now the Hermit, to see the mountain where his quest began in a different way. The light of his life experiences illuminates his way. Truthfully, he never spent much time looking around before he jumped into life. But he is back now and is not sitting in a cave, as hermits are inclined to do, but viewing the landscape. The Hermit is self-aware and confident in his knowledge. His understanding of himself and the world shines out, even on a snowy night. He does not even need a lantern to pierce the darkness. He does not need to push it out, he does not need to plug the lantern into a power source

THE JOURNEY THROUGH SPIRITUAL AWAKENING By Sophia Harmes, Ph.D.

WINTER 2022 | 63

Spiritual awakening, also known as, enlightenment, bliss, nirvana, etc., is not a new concept. It has been practiced for centuries in a variety of regions and by different cultures around the world. A spiritual awakening occurs as one arouses a new sense of life and a realization of self. Deepak Chopra describes of a spiritual awakening or enlightenment as life-changing that occurs when one becomes instantaneously aware of the connection between self and everything else. There is no longer a need to focus on the past and future or filter life through the ego.

It Starts with an Awareness Noticing is the first sign of spiritual awakening. Questions arise regarding life’s purpose. Spiritual awareness begins when questions of self are asked: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is my destiny? Searching for the answers to these questions leads to deeper awareness thus exposing ways in which we identify ourselves. An awareness of the present moment develops. There is a feeling of connection to the world in a different way which influences personal changes to make the world a better place. The awareness of attachments that have defined oneself can be identified. This leads to focusing on the true self rather than the titles that define us. It feels like lifting a veil

enabling one to see self beyond the ego. Life-altering or changing events can lead to a spiritual awakening. It could be an accident, a loss, a change in life circumstance, trauma, illness, etc. that triggers the journey.

Processes and Stages There are a variety of processes and stages related to a spiritual awakening. The actual spiritual awakening starts the questioning phase of what is known about the self. There follows a period of adjusting or removal of things from life, like old habits and belief systems, especially unhealthy or toxic relationships. The changes being adopted enable the soul to recognize the ego and begin to eliminate its power and influence on the self. The most difficult stage occurs when hitting rock bottom forcing life changes to occur. Fortunately, once at the bottom, the only place to go is up! The rise from the bottom forces acceptance of and the desire to try new things. New experiences create courage and confidence to step out of the familiar comfort zone and explore what life and purpose are all about. This is the right time to focus on activities to be involved in or start a new hobby or a new relationship. Therefore, this phase involves engaging in activities that will satisfy the spirit. Undertakings engaged during the previous transition create a foundation for understanding the true

WINTER 2022 | 65

self. This involves recognizing, honoring, and expressing one’s true nature through our gifts, skills, and talents. The next stage encompasses building an environment for the soul to flourish and evolve. This requires trial and error in implementing different strategies for self and life. During this phase, the soul heals and grows through routines and rituals implemented and adopted that work for the soul. There is a release of ego characteristics, lagging structural norms, and belief systems that no longer serve a purpose in the new life. An understanding of the soul and its desires is necessary to establish a better lifestyle and realize individual power. A selfawareness of individual divinity in every aspect of life matures. There is clarity. A desire to begin living in service to others evolves as a sense of connection develops. Engage in service and activities that make things better throughout the world such as volunteering or providing service to others, the environment, or animals. The evolving sense of interconnection with nature and the environment encourages the responsible use of natural resources and mindfulness of recycling and wastefulness. These changes and activities that are adopted and implemented bring continued fulfillment and happiness. Connection to others leads to an acceptance of those who are different and who might have been previously judged. There is no longer a need to pass judgment on others. They are now 66 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

viewed with a different perspective – with compassion and no judgment. Through this growth and awareness, it becomes possible to recognize when others are insincere, inauthentic, or manipulative. All senses are heightened as there is an awareness of living in the present. An increase in the sensitivity to the flow of energy evolves and there is a realization and understanding that everyone is on their spiritual path or journey. There is a realization that spiritual teachers are all around us. They may appear suddenly and unexpectedly and in the most surprising places. They could even be someone you would have never expected would teach you something. A sense of inner peace evolves. This helps deal with situations and things that previously created agitation. They no longer have the power in controlling the ego and self.

A Lonely Journey There is a period during a spiritual awakening when feelings of loneliness are experienced. These feelings accompany a spiritual awakening because one changes while others around are not. Day-today habits and routines change as they replace activities that no longer serve with those that support the spiritual journey. The world now looks different as a new reality is established. There is a new connection to the world through compassion, empathy, and curiosity. A consciousness of interconnectedness to

the natural world including plants and animals evolves. There is an increased awareness of the senses, emotions, physical well-being, and the flow of natural energy. Physical symptoms may develop through spiritual awakening in the form of fatigue, trouble sleeping, or brain fog. These symptoms may also be real medical conditions, so it is important to listen to the body.

Maturing Intuition Through a spiritual journey, intuition also develops and matures. This creates an ability to connect to others through the natural flow of energy. Trusting intuition further opens awareness to being guided to living in the present moment and creating an authentic self. There is a new feeling of

self-worth and confidence. A mind-body connection evolves. These processes lead to the acceptance of death. There is no longer any fear of dying as it is understood that death is part of the natural process of awakening.

Meditation Engaging in activities such as meditation is beneficial in a spiritual awakening journey. Meditation is a natural process that helps to facilitate enlightenment by accessing the conscious mind. Accessing the conscious mind helps to stay in tune with the body and the intelligence that lies within. Meditation involves staying focused. The practice involves either focused meditation or open focus meditation. Focused meditation requires attention to

the breath or a specific object, idea, or mantra for some time. The idea is to focus attention and be aware. Staying aware of attention keeps the mind from wondering. If the mind wanders simply return the attention back to the breath and what was focused on. The process helps to strengthen the focus muscle enabling more control over the conscious mind. Open focus meditation is also referred to as mindfulness. This type of meditation does not require focusing attention on the breath or an object/ idea. The focus is on thoughts, sounds, or feelings occurring in the present moment. The mind is not restricted and can roam freely. It is a type of meditation done at the moment and may take a few seconds to a few minutes. Both types of meditation are beneficial for spiritual awareness and growth. They can be done at any time during the day.

70 | Therapeutic Thymes Magazine

There are a variety of meditation tools and books that assist in maintaining attention and focus. Mala or yoga beads, similar to prayer beads, are an excellent tool used for counting the breath or mantras. The repetition helps to maintain the focus on the breath or mantra. A meditation cushion helps the body’s posture during meditation. It can be taken anywhere to provide comfort while meditating. Using a Tibetan singing bowl calms the mind through different sound frequencies and vibrations. Crystals and gemstones are great meditation aids. Each gemstone or crystal possesses its spiritual properties. Employing the appropriate crystal for an intended purpose enhances the meditation process and spiritual connection. A meditation altar can be created to enhance the meditation experience. This provides a specific space

designated for meditating. It can be decorated with items significant to assist in meditation. Using candles and incense enhances the meditation experience and can be part of the altar decorations. Meditation is a commitment to self and a new lifestyle. It can assist in liberating the self from the ego.

Conclusion Remember a spiritual awakening is a journey in the transformation of self. It does NOT happen overnight as it is an

ongoing process and requires lifestyle changes. Due to the changes in thinking and the outlook on life, there will be adjustments in habits and daily routines. Time is dedicated to self-awareness and self-reflection for self-improvement. Spiritual awakening encompasses rising to a higher state of human consciousness to return to the original self. 13 Journal Prompts TO SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

Journaling has always been my release. It has been a way to work out my issues. These prompts are designed to help you explore and expand your spiritual awareness. Try these 13 prompts to get you started:

Let’s start with what does spirituality mean to you. Do you believe in a higher entity? Describe him or her and what he or she means to you. How has your idea of a higher entity changed since your youth? What makes you feel most alive? What do you want to be remembered for after this life? What is preventing you from living the life you want? What do you believe happens after we die? Is there an after-life? Reflect on something that has made a difference in your life spiritually.

Remember your

journal is your safe plac e. Selfcleansing requ ires you in part to let it go . Release that which no

longer

serves you. Re

lease that

which is harm fu

l to you.

Release and le

What would you say to your past self? How do you pray or meditate? How does that make you feel? Have you experienced an event in your life that has changed the way you view religion? Describe a traumatic experience you have had. How did you heal yourself? Finally, what spiritual practices do you enjoy?

NEWS:

How the Search for Meaning in the Post-Soviet Era has Given Rise to a Revival of Ancient Spiritual Traditions Inner Traditions — In this in-depth look at occult and esoteric traditions in Russia, Christopher McIntosh explores the currents of mysticism, myth, magic, and the spiritual to which the Russian soul has always been attuned. The author explains how the search for meaning in the postSoviet era has given rise to a revival of ancient spiritual traditions and a plethora of new movements. He examines the precursors to these movements in the “Silver Age” (1880–1920) before the Revolution, when alternative forms of spirituality were finding new life as a reaction to the ongoing climate of violence, revolt, and repression. He discusses the impact of the Russian Revolution on spiritual and esoteric groups, and shows how their activities were tolerated and even in some instances encouraged— until Stalin assumed power in 1924.

Discussing the spiritual reawakening after the fall of communism in 1989, the author explores the survival of Slavic deities and pagan practices in modern Russia, including the indigenous pre-Christian customs of the Mari people and the shamanic traditions of Siberia. He examines the resurgence of the Orthodox Church and the burgeoning of alternative forms of spirituality. He offers a deep look at the controversial Book of Veles, branded by some as a forgery and hailed by others as an epic chronicle of the Slavic people. He also explores the interface between spirituality and the arts and the unique qualities of the Russian language as a medium for the sacred. Revealing the implications of the modern Russian spiritual and esoteric renaissance, McIntosh shows that it still remains to be seen whether Edgar Cayce’s prediction of

REVIEW:

Exit the Maze: One Addiction, One Cause, One Solution BY DR. DONNA MARKS Reviewed by Brennah Hermo Exit the Maze is one of the most revolutionary books I’ve read in a long time. Dr. Donna Marks shares not only her expertise as a licensed psychotherapist and addictions counselor, but she also shares her own personal story facing challenges with addiction. In this book, Dr. Donna talks about the many facets of addiction: working out, food, drugs, gambling, shopping, video games, and even to people. She opens up the topic of addiction in ways that allow you to fully understand the root causes—perhaps how your childhood, relationships, or even mental health led to certain challenges—and the solution that many of us wouldn’t think of, love! My favorite quote from the book is: “Every addiction is a substitute for love, so once we

replace the addictive act with an act of love, the desire to use anyone or anything will be gone.” Exit the Maze enlightens us on the importance of being mindful with every choice we make in this life, the possible impacts of those choices, and how we can continue to live happier and healthier with self-love. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand today’s global addiction crisis or to offer support and guidance for those who you may know that are currently facing addiction (of any kind!).

The artwork is calming and inviting, not too loud so that it would distract from the reading. I also love that the cards are color coded! I did a 3 card pull while focusing on gemstones and I received Kunzite (stay motivated), Azurite (release the past and focus on spiritual journey), and Chrysocolla (be mindful of your breath and your thoughts). To me these cards were saying that I should let the past go and stay focused to the journey I am on. There will be times I will start to

Your Body Will Show You the Way BY ELLEN MEREDITH Reviewed by Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman

Listening to my own body has always been difficult for me personally but Ellen Meredith offers new methods of understanding what my body is saying and what it needs in Your Body Will Show You the Way. I felt empowered with this new way of thought. Meredith uses the analogy that your gatekeeper is your immune system. As a diabetic who often fights with my immune system, this revelation woke me up. Inflammation and aches that I had been chalking up to getting older, take on

a whole new meaning when I realize they are warning signs. This is an essential book to have on hand to resolve many issues and develop a positive relationship with your body. Highly recommend. Available online and in stores at participating retailers.❁ Publisher: New World Library (13 September 2022) Language: English Paperback: 360 pages ISBN-13: 978-1608688227
