THE PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

VOLUME 6 September, 2016

The time has arrived for me to pass the reins of leadership. Thank you for the honor and privilege of serving on the Board of Directors for nine years and the last four as your President. I am pleased to announce your new officers: Becky Rogers of Kehilan Arabians in Fort Worth, TX as President; Lisa Cifrese of Thornewood Farms in Stockton, NJ as Vice-President; Cynthia Culbertson of El Miladi Arabian Stud in Carrizozo, NM as Secretary; and Omar Sakr of Sakr Arabians in Cairo, Egypt as Treasurer. I am confident this excellent team will provide strong leadership for the opportunities and challenges that face The Pyramid Society going forward. Service on The Pyramid Society's Board of Directors is truly a job that demands a great deal of time, effort and sacrifice. Please join me in welcoming three new Board members: Mary Ellen Chavez of Sonrisa Farms in Los Lunas, NM; Jill Spizale of J & J Arabians in Kokomo, MS; and Tim Manring of Arabians at Egg & I in Chimacum, WA. I encourage you to get to know them better by reading their respective profiles on the following pages within this Chariot. ---Continued

I also want to thank everyone whose efforts are continually geared toward positive industry-wide change. I commend our owners and trainers at the 2016 Event in their combined efforts to exhibit their horses with the respect they deserve, and as outlined in our new competition guidelines. As owners, we must continue to insist that training methods and exhibiting tactics do not instill fear or intimidation in our treasured animals. I sincerely appreciate the commitment and effort of those who share our ongoing mission of making this a reality. Reflecting back on my term as a Board Member and Officer, I am honored to have served with like-minded Straight Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts who always place the welfare of the horse first, right alongside their devotion to The Pyramid Society. As owners and breeders of the Straight Egyptian horse it is absolutely imperative that we generously support the organization that has worked tirelessly since 1969 to safeguard and promote our horse on a world-wide stage. And although change is inevitable, personalities differ and factors vary, we must remain committed to our overarching mission as leaders and global ambassadors for the Straight Egyptian Arabian. The responsibility belongs to all of us. In closing, please ask yourselves the question, “Where would the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse be without The Pyramid Society? And lastly, I encourage you to act accordingly. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve. Sincerely,

Bob Miars

NEW BOARD MEMBERS Please join us in welcoming the following new board members. We’re grateful for their dedication and willingness to serve, and know they will each be an asset to the leadership of our organization.

SOCIETY NEWS

MARY ELLEN CHAVEZ, Sonrisa Farms, Los Lunas, NM While most youngsters dream of owning their first car, Mary Ellen Chavez had a different dream - owning a Straight Egyptian mare. She made that a reality at the tender young age of 17 and has never looked back. Mary Ellen worked with her mother in their small, single-location restaurant Burritos Alinstante in Albuquerque, NM. After her mother’s untimely passing in 1997, she successfully expanded the restaurant to its present status of being a household name in central New Mexico. Having owned, bred and marketed Straight Egyptian horses throughout her adult life, Mary Ellen states, “This amazing horse ignited a passion inside of me that was to forever change the direction of my life.” She has been a member of the Society for 13+ years, and she and son Caleb became Life Members in 2016. Mary Ellen has continually participated in all aspects of the Society, including the Event, attendance at educational conferences, in addition to hosting regional activities at her Sonrisa Farms. She has also served on the Membership Committee. Mary Ellen’s goal is to strengthen the scope of the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse and the Society. Certainly her extensive travels at shows and farms throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia, give her a wonderful perspective on the best ways to achieve those goals. Mary Ellen concludes, “I am honored to serve in such an important position.”

TIM MANRING, ARABIANS at Egg & I, Chimacum, WA Tim Manring of Chimacum, Washington, grew up on a small farm in Southeastern Washington with a different kind of horse – the ones you rode not showed. After college, a year of graduate work in Beirut, Lebanon, and Law School at the University of California at Berkeley, Tim’s career took him to Southeast Asia to teach law in Singapore and Indonesia. He returned briefly to practice law in Seattle before going back to Indonesia where he and his wife would spend their careers, successfully managing a large legal firm. Tim candidly stated, “Managing a group of lawyers tested my skills at listening to people and finding common grounds to move forward.” He retired in 2004 and returned to the northwest corner of the State of Washington to raise Arabian horses, initially with 2 Straight Egyptian mares and a young filly. Tim commented, “I have been fortunate to have some great mentors in my new life, good models, good teachers and people who are willing to ‘invest’ in me through time, effort and thoughtful advice and help. I believe there are dozens upon dozens of such people among Straight Egyptian breeders.” No doubt Tim heeded that sound advice, as he’s been in the winner’s circle numerous times at the Egyptian Event and in open shows in both halter and performance. Tim has been a member of The Pyramid Society for 12+ years, participating in the Society’s breeding programs and also serving on the Membership Committee. As a board member, Tim’s goals are to increase membership in the Society, particularly among young people, as well as expand participation in the Egyptian Event and in the overall Arabian community. Continued education is extremely important to Tim, and – true to his legal background – he expresses the importance of ‘keeping an open mind’ in exploring all ideas in an effort to best serve our Society and the Egyptian Arabian horse going forward.

JILL SPIZALE, J&J Arabians, Kokomo, MS Jill’s and her husband Jim’s interest in the Egyptian Arabian dates back to 1989 and Cairo, Egypt, where Jim was employed with the Amoco/Gupco community as an engineer. Jill states, “After being invited to ‘see some pretty horses’, I was hooked.” And hooked they were, with the family learning to ride - including jumpers. After returning home to Slidell, La., in 1992, the horses were put on the back burner for several years. In 2007 an ad for a seminar on Straight Egyptian Arabian breeding changed all that. A week later they were the proud owners of their first filly, beginning a whole new chapter for the Spizale family. Property was acquired, a fledgling breeding business followed, and a way of life unfolded for the Jill, Jim and daughter Amanda and her family. As Jill lovingly states, “We did not know that the horses would shape our whole life.” Seeing a colt, which they had bred and cared for since birth, be named the 2016 Egyptian Event Gold Junior Champion was the culmination of a dream for the entire Spizale family.

Jill, Jim, daughter Amanda and son-in-law Lance Picou, joined the Society in 2009 and became Life Members in 2012. Jill’s ‘a doer’, immersing herself into the Membership Committee and quickly taking the lead on several other projects, including coordinating volunteers at the Event as well as spearheading special ‘fun’ Event activities. Jill was named Volunteer of the Year in 2015 and added to her growing list by co-chairing the 2016 Egyptian Event Silent Auction. They have actively participated in all breeders’ conferences and Society programs, including the futurities and the EBC. Jill’s talents will be put to good use, as she has agreed to Co-Chair the Membership Committee, along with Jaleen Hacklander. Jill concludes, “I have a willingness to work, a passion for the horses, an eagerness to learn, and I am honored to be a part of the leadership of The Pyramid Society”.

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES WITH THE EGYPTIAN ARABIAN HORSE IN EUROPE IN 2016

INDUSTRY NEWS

by Keri Wright, Pyramid Society Education Chair

One of the aspects that Carolee and I enjoy most about the Egyptian Arabian horse is the opportunity to meet fellow breeders and enthusiasts from around the world. As a global ambassador of peace and good will, this horse has served as the catalyst for our travels throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East. As a result, we’ve seen some of the most beautiful Egyptian Arabians in the world, and formed great friendships with people whose devotion to this horse mirrors our own.

Entry to the Castle Dyke

In August we traveled to Italy in preparation for The Pyramid Society’s 2017 International Breeder’s Conference. More details will follow shortly but please mark your calendars and save the date: October 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2017. This promises to deliver the same high caliber conference you’ve come to expect from The Pyramid Society.

After Italy we travelled to the Egyptian Event Europe, held at its new location, Castle Dyck, just outside Dusseldorf, Germany. Expertly organized by Heike Hain and her committee, the show kicked off with a packed-house seminar on strains and mare families, expertly led by Joe Ferriss. The show setting was spectacular, the castle and German countryside providing the perfect backdrop for our primary focus: the beautiful fillies and mares presented that first day. It also provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends from Ireland, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Australia, the United

States, Dubai, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and Israel. The gala completed the day’s activities. Exquisite food, beautiful background music, a small lake, a castle – quite the picturesque venue for such a gathering. It didn’t stop there, however. Adding to the magic was the farewell appearance of the ethereal Al Adeed Al Shaqab, World Champion Stallion, All Nations Cup Champion, Egyptian Event U.S. Supreme Champion Stallion. May he enjoy a safe journey home to Qatar and a long life ahead of him. Al Adeed Al Shaqab

Colts and stallions were shown the next day, followed by the championships; again, some magnificent horses. We had seen PSE Al Rakhan as a yearling when he won Gold Champion Colt at the Egyptian Event Europe some years ago, so were very pleased to see him now as a young stallion winning the Gold Champion Stallion title. He’s the embodiment of the ideal and we enjoyed meeting his new owner, Khaled Al Nughaimshey, and are so pleased that Kuwait will be his new home. Nabila Al Rayyan stole our hearts as the Gold Champion mare. Owned by Sheikh Saoud Abdulaziz Al Thani and bred by Al Rayyan Farm, she is the perfect combination of the world famous breeding programs of Ansata Arabian Stud and Katharinenhof. Her dam, Ansata Nefer Isis, a full sister in blood to Ansata Iemhotep, Ansata Sinan and Ansata Nafisa, and her sire the renowned Sinan Al Rayyan.

IN MEMORIUM - WILLIAM (BILL) PENNINGTON Bill Pennington passed away on July 26th at the age of 81. His dedication to the Arabian horse community was both unwavering and farreaching. He also worked tirelessly with the Youth Nationals and served as President of the Arabian Horse Association. That big smile and kind spirit will be genuinely missed by everyone in the Arabian community. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arabian Horse Foundation for the William Pennington Memorial Youth Scholarship Fund, 1024 K Street, Lincoln, NE 68508.
