It’s now PSC-Unigames!

The Philippine Sports Commission has declared the Philippine University Games as the official tertiary games in the country, thus it is now known as PSC-Unigames. This was revealed by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Ricardo Garcia over the weekend during the formal opening of the 16th Philippine University Games in Roxas City where he was the keynote speaker. Addressing about 2,500 athletes, coaches, and sports officials present at the Capiz Gym, Garcia also highlighted the role of Unigames as an avenue for sports promotion and development. “I encourage everyone, particularly the young ones to engage in sports because this, I believe, has an impact in the formation of values of an individual

and a great instrument to achieve peace and unity,” Garcia said.- shortly before the opening of the game. The PSC chairman had earlier disclosed, too, that the Negros-Panay area is officially declared the home of the Unigames. The declaration was followed by the lighting of the Unigames run and the Oath of Sportsmanship by Jearlyn Bornales. Athletes were given a short tribute by the CPC Sarayawan Dance Company. Capiz Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr. led the local officials who were present during the opening ceremonies along with Roxas Mayor Angel Alan Celino represented by Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Vicente Hilata, P.A.,V.G., rector of the host school, Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion. “On behalf of the people of Capiz, thank you very much for choosing our province to be part of the continuing legacy of promoting sportsmanship, goodwill, unity and peace among professionals and students in the Philippines,” Tanco said. “This is a momentous occasion for us here in Roxas for this is the first time we will have the games here where
our people can witness how students and athletes of our country compete in the spirit of fair play and camaraderie,” Celino said. Msgr. Hilata, on his part, reiterated that “this particular celebration now of sports in its varied forms in our locality, participated in by the different schools and universities from all over the country, certainly brings jubilation for all of us and for our people.” Forty-seven schools are seeing action in 13 Unigames sports disciplines. inning on a hit by Ana May Chavez with Shirley Calderon sealing the win in the fourth inning on a throwing error by CPU in their match at the Roxas City School for Philippine Craftsmen. “We’re happy we finally won the title after three years of participation,” said RTU Coach Ronilo Pagkaliwagan, a former national team standout, who is also the pitching trainer of the Philippine women’s softball team to the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. He complimented CPU, saying that while the softball tournament has only two entries this year, the Centralians are a tough team to beat as many of them are former Palarong Pambansa standouts. The RTU team, which
also blanked CPU in their first match, 5-0, finished second -- in the past three staging of the softball completion -- behind Adamson U, which opted not to play this year. “In both games, we showed teamwork and confidence”, said first-base player Shareen Garcia, who added that they prepared for the Unigames for about four months. Pagkaliwagan added that the nucleus of the Philippine SEAG team comes from Adamson. And, after two days on the ballfield, the coach replied when asked about the team’s victory party, “It will be at the swimming pool as I promised the girls”. FEU, UST athletes take early lead
Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas reaped three gold medals each on Tuesday to lead the race for top honors at the start of the PSCUnigames track and field competition at the Villareal Stadium. Hercor College and Ateneo de Manila took the two other gold medals contested on the opening day of the athletics competition. FEU coed Josie Malacad, an HRM junior and a native of Batad, Iloilo, won the meet’s first gold medal -- in 800-m with a 2:17.60 clocking, edging Lilia de la Rosa of UST (2:18.97) and Michelle Villas of host Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion (2:20.10) UST’s John Paul Billones took the first gold medal in the men’s division with his 1:55.91 mark in men’s 800 where Wenie Maulos of the University of the East finished second (1.56.66) and JP Azcueta of Ateneo, third (1:57.04). The two other UST golds were clinched in 4x200-m women’s relay and men’s long jump, courtesy of Marvin Lupenario (6.80-m).

FEU also won in men’s 5,000-m through the 15:45.38 clocking of Rafael Poliquit Jr. and Lein Ann Tan, who heaved the shot put to a 9.56-m distance. Al Bugarin of Ateneo de Manila heaved the iron ball to a 13.30 distance for the men’s gold while Aida Villeza of Hercor College topped the women’s 5,000-m with her 18:42.18 mark. women’s 4x200-m relay) while UST and the University of the East took two second places each on the first day of competition.
