Where Become

Family

Executive Director Focus Today I learned that SafeHaven Humane Society had been nominated for the Non-Profit Organization of the Year for the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Awards. What a tremendous honor this nomination is!

I am so proud of the positive impact SafeHaven has made on so many lives. Today, we are a much different organization than we were 17 years ago when I began this journey; but our commitment has never wavered and never will---we will always do what it takes to bring HOPE to homeless pets. Pets like Dobbie have experienced such cruelty in their short lives. He suffered chemical burns over many parts of his body, but possessed a personality that radiated nothing but joy.

SafeHaven was able to say “yes” to help Dobbie because of the support of our donors like you.

For more than 45 years, SafeHaven has been providing a beacon of light for animals in need. We are proud our accomplishments, the thousands of lives we have saved, and the programs we have implemented to help both people and pets in our community and beyond; but our work is not done. We are committed to “always doing more” to help pets and the people who love them. Our newest venture is the building of our very own Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite which you will read about in this issue of the Pet Press. Join us, partner with us, and make this a reality for the pets and our community. Together we can make it happen! “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past” -- Thomas Jefferson

Saving Lives….Creating Families

Chris Storm, Executive Director

CAWA CERTIFICATION In November 2017, Executive Director, Chris Storm, became a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA). This professional certification program, administered by SAWA, distinguishes top-level executives and managers working in non-profit and animal welfare agencies for their knowledge, experience and expertise. There are currently only around 170 professionals who have achieved this certification.

1

CAWA candidates must meet strict eligibility requirements in leadership, management, and animal welfare experience, and then pass a rigorous exam,

developed to assess the highest standards for competency as both a leader and animal welfare administrator. The exam measures knowledge and skills in administration and management, personnel supervision and leadership, public relations and fundraising, animal care and treatment, and reasoning.

Featured Adoption On the morning of February 6th, 2018, both the staff and volunteers waited anxiously about the day ahead. Today was the day! After four weeks of anticipation by the community, the Alaskan Malamute mix puppies would become available for adoption.

from The Dalles, and the third adopter was from Redmond. Potential adopters came from all over to meet these special puppies. By 3:30pm, 22 puppies had found new and loving homes! The others had already found their forever homes while in foster care.

On January 9th, 2018, SafeHaven sent a two person rescue team to the Northwest SPCA to offer assistance after Butte County Animal Control brought in 95 Malamute/Husky mixes to the NW SPCA after shutting down a Concow, California puppy mill. The rescue team returned the next day with 7 adults and 44 puppies. For the staff and volunteers, it was an ‘all hands on deck’ busy couple of days at the shelter but so worth every ounce of hard work!

Updates from our adopters truly bring us the most joy! Our happiness comes from you, our donors and supporters believing in the work we do!

THE STORY UNFOLDS:

Unfortunately, the hardest part was still yet to come. Within a few short days of arriving at SafeHaven, many of the puppies began showing signs of giardia, severe kennel cough, and parvo. Our hearts were breaking for these babies, but we were determined to do everything we could for each one of them. Staff volunteered for around-the-clock care over the next two weeks. Albany Animal Hospital also helped tremendously with their amazing care and while working together, lives were saved!

YOU MADE THE DIFFERENCE

Your support of SafeHaven made the special day of February 6th, 2018 possible. As we watched the cars pull into the parking lot that morning, we knew that today was the day that those beautiful puppies and adults would find their new homes. We began interviewing potential adopters at 8 am to be certain these puppies found appropriate homes. The first adopter arrived from Momouth Lakes, California. She drove all day (12 hours) the previous day to adopt the first puppy. The second adopter was

THE STORY CONTINUES:

A NOTE FROM BEAR’S NEW MOM “Having owned dogs and cats over the years I am familiar with vet bills. However, the idea of funding veterinary services for 44 puppies is mind boggling. Because of Bear, I now know of the magnitude of SafeHaven’s committment to animal rescue and for that reason, my family and I are committed to supporting SafeHaven on a monthly basis.”

A NOTE FROM STORMY’S MOM “My friend and I both lost our old Malamutes this past year. When my Dad called me and told me about SafeHaven helping with the rescue of these precious Malamutes, it felt like fate brought us together. The SafeHaven staff were amazing, as were the foster families, who helped transition these puppies into wonderful homes. Stormy is on to her next adventure…. with me and my family!”

Happy Tails In 2017, 2,556 pets from SafeHaven found their forever homes! Here are a few of our favorite stories from SafeHaven Alumni. Stories like these are made possible by your donations and support!

NIKKI

SUNSHINE In 2017, SafeHaven adopted the motto “Where Pets Become Family”, but for Tim and Sunshine, our new motto became a reality in September 2010. “A close friend took me to SafeHaven to find a companion. We looked at four different cats and they didn’t want anything to do with me. I was sitting cross-legged on the floor when I asked to see Sunshine. When they put her on the floor - she bolted towards me, planted all four paws on my chest and almost knocked me over backwards. She chose me that day. Fast forward almost 8 years and this house is just as much hers as mine and I would do anything for her.” From everyone here at SafeHaven – Thanks for giving Sunshine a second chance and a loving family.

“After originally seeing Nikki as part of the SafeHaven float in the strawberry festival parade, we took an adventure to the humane society to visit the animals. I have a toddler who was just over a year old at the time we first met Nikki. We asked to take her outside, and she had the most loving personality. Having just had puppies recently she had such a maternal instinct around my little boy and the two quickly bonded. Kaleb loved her instantly and so did the rest of us. We brought one of our other dogs back for a meet and greet with her, and soon we were preparing paperwork to bring our loving girl home. Since then, she has been the sweetest most faithful lover ever, she rarely barks, and she is always ready to snuggle! We love our Nikki and are so blessed to have found her to welcome to our home!” -Kendra Worthington

Humane Education YOUTH MAKING A DIFFERENCE On January 9th, we had a fantastic group of 22 world changers from Meredith Work’s 6th period Lebanon High School AVID class spend some time helping us clean and socialize the animals. Thank you all for donating your valuable time to better the lives of the animals at SafeHaven! The group is pictured with Luna, who was just recently adopted, and as you can see, she won their hearts.

MEET HANNA JAMES! Hanna James is a 6th grader at Seven Oak Middle School in Lebanon. Her love for animals started at a very young age. Her passion ignited the first time we took her to the Hwy 34 SafeHaven (old location). She was around 5 years old at the time. In there, she met a dog named Edgar. She couldn’t understand why someone did not want a sweet dog like Edgar. It broke her heart leaving him there. She came home, opened her piggy bank, wrote a letter to SafeHaven asking to take her money and buy Edgar something special. I believe it was around $4 she donated. Shortly after meeting Edgar, we went back to SafeHaven to visit as we usually did. We were visiting the dog floor, and thats when we came across Annie. Hanna got in the kennel with Annie, opened her arms, and Annie snuggled up to her. We knew right then, we had a new dog. Fast forward 5 years, Annie is a part of our family. She has brought so much love and laughter in our life. We could not picture our lives without Annie Hanna now holds a few fundraisers each year. Instead of gifts for her birthday, she asks friends and family to donate pet supplies or donations to SafeHaven. She holds a holiday fundraiser , in which she distributes pet supplies around the neighborhood. She loves telling people about the holiday Giving Tree, SafeHaven’s various auctions and events and general 5

information about the shelter. Her favorite part is delivering the donations and visiting all the animals that she has helped. The photo below is Hanna helping at the Laura Gillott home team client movie night. Hanna’s passion for animal rescue is pretty incredible to witness. I can not wait to see where her passion takes her. She is smart, caring and will do great things in the world of animal rescue!

Inner Circle CAREGIVERS CLUB Hi, my name is Leilani. I came to SafeHaven in July 2017, more than six months ago. I was given a lifesaving opportunity to find my forever home through a “Rescue Me” transport from New Mexico. In 2017, SafeHaven saved thousands of others like me from high kill shelters around the nation so we could all remain safe and wait for our forever homes, no matter how long that takes. I am so happy and grateful to be at SafeHaven and wanted to share my story and how important my second chance at life is.

When I first arrived, I was a little unsure of my sudden new surroundings, so I took some time to warm up. When I became a bit more comfortable, my true personality started to come through and I began to show my best traits: I am active, playful and can be affectionate. I have a lot of drive and am very willing to learn new things! I also have a lot of energy and I would thrive in a home with older children, as I am still learning good manners. I know I would do best in a home with an active person or family who is eager to devote time to continue my training and give me plenty of exercise. 7

Because I am still working on some manners and trying really hard to be a good girl, I have not yet found my forever home. I am lucky enough to be at SafeHaven, though. SafeHaven is letting me stay until the right family comes along.

How does SafeHaven do this? Because of donors like you! The best way to ensure that I get everything I need is by signing up for monthly giving, the Inner Circle Caregiver’s Club. Monthly donations to SafeHaven are the reason I get to stay here as long as needed. They provide food, warm shelter, enrichment toys and even the training I need to continue my education to be the best version of myself! Please consider helping all of the shelter animals like me and continuing SafeHaven’s mission of Finding Homes, Opening Hearts, and Educating Minds to strengthen and improve the lives of animals and people.

HOW IT WORKS You can sign up via credit card and on any date of your choosing every month, your donation is processed. You may choose ANY DONATION AMOUNT and are able to change or cancel your payment at any time. Visit our website or call Brittany at 541-926-2924 to get signed up! By joining our Inner Circle, you will receive monthly emails with special updates on our life-saving activities and become a part of the stories that change these animals’ lives every day!

Planned Giving BUILDING A FUTURE SafeHaven Humane Society would like to express our deep appreciation to Joe Cox. Joe passed away in January of this year, but his love and compassion for animals will continue on in the work that we do. During his life, he adopted 4 cats from SafeHaven. Here he is pictured with one of his cats, Gero. Thank you Joe for including SafeHaven in your estate planning! Joe is part of our Legacy Leaders Program.

Legacy Leaders are a group of individuals who pledge a charitable gift to SafeHaven in their will or estate plans. Legacy gifts help build long-term financial stability for homeless pets for years to come. If you would like more information on our Legacy Leaders Program, please contact Brian at brian@safehavenhumane.com.

Community

CREATING NEW PARTNERSHIPS On February 11th, we were invited to spend the day at Lassen Chevrolet in Albany. Mike Mason from KGAL broadcasted the event on sight and invited SafeHaven staff to speak on the air about current happenings. Lassen Chevrolet also purchased and raffled off a $400 gift certificate to SafeHaven! We look forward to growing the relationship with Lassen and will partner with them in future fundraising events at their location.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT ANY AGE Every year, SafeHaven Humane Society places holiday Giving Trees around our community in hopes that our members will think of us while doing their own Christmas shopping. Some of these locations include the mall, various businesses and even some schools. This year, Albany Christian Academy participated by hosting one of our trees in their Kindergarten classroom. When we went to pick up the generous donations, we brought along one of our SafeHaven alumni, Gunnar, to meet the class. He was more than happy to receive belly rubs from the kids who showed us the true meaning of Christmas is alive and well in our community!

HAMMERHEART STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

On November 11th, Hammerheart in Corvallis hosted a viewing of “Under An Arctic Sky” during their Grand Opening Month. The film follows six surfers, along with adventure photographer, Chris Burkard, and filmmaker Ben Welland, as they seek out unknown swell in the remote fjords of Iceland’s Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. The event was free to the community, but donations for SafeHaven were accepted. We appreciate events such as this so much and look forward to working with them more! 9

Community EVERYONE DESERVES A Valentine For Valentine’s Day this year, SafeHaven hosted a fundraiser to find a Valentine for each of our animals. The community had the opportunity to sponsor one of our animals while they wait for their forever Valentine! Each sponsorship of $20 helped provide warm shelter and care for each animal. The animals received a heart on their kennel and SafeHaven sent updates to each sponsor as their Valentine got adopted.

At the end of the month, 43 Valentines were purchased and all of the kennels in the shelter had a little more love.

Kitty Yoga Have you had a chance to join us for Kitty Yoga yet? This fun event we host has gained popularity over the last six months and we want you to join! The next Kitty Yoga will be held on Friday, April 20th at 5 p.m. in the SafeHaven Training Center. Space is limited and registration will be available online!

DRAKE & GORDIE We’re happy to introduce you to Drake (cover photo) and his brother, Gordie. Drake is a goofy and loving 11 year old Yellow Lab and Gordie is a 7 year old Australian Shepherd/Heeler mix. They both live with Laura Gillott and her family in Lebanon, Oregon.

Drake has been with Laura and her family since he was a puppy and it has been quite the adventure. Drake quickly became part of the family and learned the meaning of unconditional love after he chewed up couch #1. Four couches later, Drake still lives in his forever home and he knows his family loves him through all of it. Drake’s age has not slowed him down one bit and he still loves to get out in the yard and chase ground squirrels. Gordie was rescued when he was young and has also been a part of the family for many years. Gordie is very sweet and loves to cuddle! He enjoys spending time with his big brother and following Drake’s lead. The two of them make a great team and Laura and her family could not imagine life without them!

Laura Gillott

Laura and her team have been long time supporters of SafeHaven and have been involved in many events and volunteering at the shelter. Laura was featured in SafeHaven’s largest event of the year, Rescue Roundup, as a presenting sponsor and stays involved year-round with support. We are grateful to Laura Gillott and her team for making such an impact on all of the animals at SafeHaven! 10

Business Spotlight Established in 1976, Jano’s Trophies is a family owned local business. They have been helping the community honor accomplishments and engrave memories for over 40 years. David Climer, owner of Jano’s Trophies, has established personal relationships with local businesses and customers. We asked Jano’s about being involved with SafeHaven and this is what Dave had to say.

How long have you been SafeHaven supporters? Jano’s Trophies has been a supporter of SafeHaven for over ten years, as far back as 2008. We donated trophies to a SafeHaven bowling tournament. This felt significant because my father started this business as a result of not being able to buy bowling trophies for the league he was on anywhere closer than Salem.

Jano’s Trophies continues to sponsor/donate for events like the Pawscars, Stars and Stripes Golf Tournaments and is a part of the Adopt a Kennel program. The events are fun and we enjoy participating in them as well.

How did you get involved with SafeHaven?

A DV E RT I S E M E N T

Osalyn Houser, one of the board members, stopped by Jano’s Trophies and told Terri, my wife, about volunteering opportunities. We went down and she took photographs of some of the cats. One of the senior cats named David was adopted almost immediately after her photos were uploaded. We saw families being made and felt like we were part of something very special. We decided to join efforts with Terri Martin Photography, who also supports SafeHaven’s mission of “Finding Homes, Opening Hearts

and Educating Minds.” Terri recently donated a photo session to the winner of the Safe Haven Halloween Photo Contest for a cover shot on the winter cover of Pet Press.

Why do you continue to support SafeHaven?

We both love animals and continue our support because of the difference SafeHaven makes in their lives.

The volunteers and staff at SafeHaven made us feel like part of the SafeHaven family and it is a perfect fit with our family business. In continued support, Jano’s Trophies offers a free engraved tag to newly adopted animals with papers from SafeHaven Humane Society.

Have you adopted animal(s) from us before? We adopted Sherman last spring. Now we know on a personal level the incredible difference SafeHaven makes in the lives of the animals and in the lives of families they help create.

Sherman has made such a wonderful improvement in our lives. He is family. You can check out his adventures on Facebook at facebook.com/ShermanRescueDog. He would like to see pictures of your pet too!

SafeHaven Gift & Thrift

SAVE LIVES BY SHOPPING & DONATING 100% of the proceeds from the donations made to SafeHaven Gift & Thrift goes towards the care for the animals at SafeHaven. Simply by thrift shopping and making donations, you can save a life!

Let’s talk about spring cleaning.

For some of us, it is a long awaited time of the year where we can get our homes (and lives) in order. However, sometimes it’s something we hear and think is a good idea but, let’s be honest, may or may not do. One thing is for sure, if you participate in spring cleaning, you will find things around your home that you won’t want anymore.

13

That’s where we come in. SafeHaven will accept any gently used household items that you no longer want and use the proceeds to help

animals in need! And while you’re at our Gift & Thrift store, take a look around and see if there is anything you can use to spruce up your clean and organized home. There are many ways to tackle this seemingly monumental task so we put together a few tips and tricks to help you get started with your spring cleaning:

1. DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS. Before you begin, make sure you set aside a box (or two or three) for the items you will donate. That way, as they come up, you already have a space to place those things. 2. START IN ONE ROOM. For some of us, the entire ‘cleaning’ could take days or weeks, but tackle one room or thing at a time. Once you choose a room, start in one area and work your way around the space. For example, if you pick the kitchen as a first space, start with one area, like the pantry or under the sink.

3. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A FRESH COAT OF PAINT. Most of the time, a small cosmetic update can transform an entire space! If you’re lacking time or funds but want a fresh look, head on down to a home improvement store and grab a few cans of paint. After painting, head to our Gift & Thrift location to complete the transformation with some new decor! 4. MAKE IT FUN! Enlist the help of a friend or family member and crank some tunes. If you’d rather do it alone, this is the perfect time to also catch up on some Netflix. Use a tablet or your phone to play your favorite series in the background. You’ll never realize you’re actually working.

DONATIONS ACCEPTED MONDAY TO SATURDAY 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM 33650 HWY 99E TANGENT, OR 97389

Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite

For more than 45 years, SafeHaven has worked hard to build and maintain a reputation for hard work and excellence in the world of animal sheltering, and as the demand for our services grow, so must our facility. Our goal is to save lives; and the support of animals lovers like you will make that happen. The addition of the Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite to our facility will improve our ability to care for the animals that pass through our doors.

The Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite will allow us to: Save more lives

Decrease stress put on animals requiring surgery as there will be no need for travel Provide high quality, more personalized medical care to shelter animals

Expand our partnerships, including teaching and training opportunities; gaining valuable experience in the under-served field of shelter medicine Safely isolate animals that are too young, injured, or ill for adoption

Provide critical, timely medical treatment for shelter animals through the addition of a veterinarian on staff

We have raised $122,000 of our $400,000 goal. Please consider making a gift today to the Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite. Help us make this a reality in 2018!

On February 27th, World Spay Day, SafeHaven announced a Crowdrise campaign to continue raising money for this dream.

Crowdrise, similiar to GoFundMe, is a way for us to get the word out to our community and make the option to get involved more readily available. If you want to support the Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite, you can donate to this cause or simply share the campaign on your social media!
