THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR BIKERS WITH A DISABILITY

The was set up in April 1991 by a group of people in Manchester who believe that disabled people should have full access to the independence and freedom of motorcycling.

During the past twenty - odd years, this unique Association has immensely.

The membership of the NABD has increased to over 7,500 individuals from all over Britain, Eire and Europe with well over 150 clubs, groups and businesses affiliating to show their support of our aims.

The NABD has many diverse aspects including:

Financial Grants

To assist with the cost of special adaption work to bikes and trikes to suit the individual requirements of disabled riders. These grants range from £500.00 to £2,000.00 dependant on the type of machine and the specific needs of the disabled rider.

NABD grants are also now available toward the costs of refresher training and assessments.

Assessments and Training

The NABD has a number of “learner legal” 125cc machines, which are adapted to suit various disabilities.

These machines are lent to disabled riders free of charge for the purposes of professional training/ tests and rider assessments.

The NABD also offer financial help with the cost of refresher training for riders who have become disabled due to traumatic accidents or who have endured a protracted period of time off the road.

Insurance

The NABD has negotiated discount rates for members from some of the more reputable companies. Where an individual has difficulty obtaining a reasonable quotation we will attempt to negotiate a satisfactory conclusion.

Bikesure Insurance (part of the Adrian Flux Group) in cooperation with the NABD operate a unique discounted insurance scheme for our members.

It is our belief that; “When it comes to motorcycling, a disability should not be a handicap”.

Representatives

The NABD has a wide network of appointed representatives throughout Britain who co-ordinate the efforts of local members and organise regular meetings and fund-raising events.

Awareness

The NABD is constantly trying to educate the organisers of motorcycle events to the fundamental needs of disabled riders. Many organisers now ask our advice on facilities for people with disabilities as a matter of course.

NABD information and publicity stands attend a large number of motorcycling and disability events each year throughout the British Isles.

The NABD’s quarterly magazine, Open House, which gives a broad view of the work of the association, is available to every NABD member and affiliate and to other supporters and interested parties.

Adaptions

The adaptions made to motorcycles and trikes are as varied as current technology will allow.

Adaptions range from simple re-siting of existing controls, to the fitting of specially designed kits or even the building of specialised vehicles where necessary to suit the particular needs of a disabled rider.

Due to the detailed engineering work involved, the NABD utilises a network of professional engineers throughout Britain and Eire.

Events

The NABD holds many events around Britain throughout the year. These NABD events range from major annual motorcycle rallies to smaller fund-raising activities.

Although these events are intended primarily to raise funds, they have gained a reputation for being good value, quality entertainment.

Several of the more regular events are now classed as some of the best on the motorcycle scene.

Finance

The administration of the NABD is financed entirely from the proceeds of membership fees and our own direct fund-raising efforts.

All donations made to the NABD are used solely to fund the adaption grants and other services offered to disabled riders by the Association.

The NABD is a voluntary association. We only have two paid employees, a full-time office administrator and a full-time admin assistant. The gross turnover of the NABD for 2018-1019 was over £245.000.00.

Other Funding

The NABD are constantly seeking funding from sources like the National Lottery and the European Union.

We are also seeking sponsorship from commercial interests and the motorcycle industry in particular.

Membership

NABD membership is available to anyone with a love of motorcycling irrespective of disability. Each member receives a members pack, the Open House magazine and discount prices on some items of NABD merchandise.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, members get the chance to help lots of people enhance their lives in a practical and constructive way.

Campaigning

The NABD has several objectives concerning the rights and safety of disabled riders, we are regularly consulted on issues relating to disabled motorcycling by the DVLA, DfT, VOSA, DSA, and the Highways Agency.

We also work closely with MAG and BMF on many issues affecting the rights of bikers.

The Future

Over the years the NABD has helped thousands of people with disabilities to enjoy the independence and the freedom of motorcycling.

With the continued support of the biking community the NABD will remain the world’s foremost support group for disabled bikers!

EDICT...

First of all, welcome onboard to Tracey Tynan who has taken over the membership role from Mark Mayo. Mark has moved on to take over the Club Liaison position from me.

Tracey and Simon (Freedman, our techy guru) have also been working on a new style membership card to replace the old laminated ones. Members should start receiving them as they are rolled out this year. This is alongside working out the bugs within the new membership system and a plethora of other things which I don’t completely understand.

We have also had a few new Reps join us. Michelle Straughan from Durham has come back into the fold, Duncan Maceira from the Isle of Arran, Rosie Brown from Liverpool and Tomo Thomson from Cowdonbeath. So welcome onboard and I hope you enjoy representing this worthwhile charity.

As I sit here, in the middle of a field full of bikers and the sun shining down. I am reminded of why I fell in love with the biker scene so many years ago (too many years to admit to). The comradery, laughter and general ambience of a rally field is like no other. Our own You’ve been NABBED 29 event, earlier in the year, was the same. Everyone was there to just enjoy life and revel in each others company. The past three years have been a drain on us all, and if that event was anything to go by, we are determined to live life to the fullest whilst we still can.

I missed all this.

As I now have the van to sleep in at events, I shall also be reanimating my NABD information stand. So, if you see me at an event, feel free to stop by and say hello.

Speaking of events, plans are also forming for our 30th You’ve been NABBED event coming in 2023. It should be epic!

There’s been a few changes in the background within the NABD universe.

VAT Relief & The 3-Year Rule

Just to clarify the position on VAT relief for people with disabilities.

Where the vehicle is being adapted ‘prior to the point of sale’ it can qualify for 0% VAT on the whole sale price of the vehicle but only if the individual claiming the VAT relief has not claimed similar VAT relief in the previous three years.

This VAT relief 3-year rule also applies if the claimant has a 0% VAT rated Motability vehicle (even one on Finance lease).Below are two extracts from the .gov site relating to Vat relief for people with disabilities.

6.1 The 3-year rule

With effect from 1 April 2017, VAT relief is only allowable on one adapted vehicle, purchased (either outright or through a finance lease) for the personal use of the disabled wheelchair user, in a period of 3 years. This is known as the ‘3-year rule’.

The 3-year period begins on the date that a supply of a zero-rated adapted vehicle is made to a disabled wheelchair user or their nominated representative. The 3-year rule applies to all zerorated adapted motor vehicles whether purchased within the UK or imported.

An individual or their nominated representative is required to certify with their supplier that they satisfy the 3-year rule and there are penalties for providing an incorrect customer eligibility declaration.

If an individual or their nominated representative wishes to purchase additional adapted vehicles within any 3-year period, then they can do so but they must pay the standard rate of VAT on the purchase of any subsequent vehicle.

6.2 Exceptions to the 3-year rule

There could be occasions when there are reasons why a disabled person needs to replace an adapted motor vehicle within a 3-year period and the normal rules can be waived. These are when the:

•vehicle has been stolen

•vehicle has been destroyed or damaged beyond repair in circumstances beyond the control of the disabled person

• disabled wheelchair user’s condition changes and because of this the vehicle is no longer suitable for use by that person

In order for an exception to the 3-year rule to be made, you will need to provide additional evidence to:

•the supplier of your vehicle – if your previous vehicle has been stolen or destroyed or damaged beyond repair you will need to provide information from insurers, police or details from the garage writing-off the vehicle

•HMRC – if your condition has changed significantly and your adapted vehicle is no longer suitable to meet the needs of your condition, you will need to contact the helpline

HMRC will then consider the case and send you a letter confirming whether or not the 3-year exception is met. The supplier will not be able to zero rate their supply to you without this confirmation letter.

NB. The 3-year rule only applies to claiming VAT relief on the cost of purchasing the vehicle. Where adaptations are being carried-out after point of sale, VAT relief can be claimed on the adaptations and labour charges involved in manufacturing/ fitting them.

The past few months have been somewhat frenetic for those of us on the front-line of the NABD.

The 29th You’ve Been Nabbed Rally – 6th – 8th May 2022

Putting the 29th You’ve Been Nabbed Rally together was always destined to be a bit of a ‘labour of love’ after having two-years off due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As we suspected, a notable proportion of our regular traders and/or equipment suppliers for the event had not survived the financial ravages of the pandemic and, even more sadly, one or two had been taken by the disease itself.

What we hadn’t accounted for, when we set the ticket price in October last year, was the cost-ofliving crisis that arose over the first three months of this year. By the time we became aware of the huge incremental rise in prices in February we had already been selling tickets for two and a half months so we didn’t have the option of increasing our prices.

We were also unaware, when we started selling tickets on 1st December 2021, that a ban on the use of tax-free Red Diesel in our event generators and plant would be brought in on April 1st 2022 (The only exemption being for Golf Courses, you can draw your own conclusions on that one!).

As the event approached the rises in costs began to be a cause of great concern but all we could do

was to hope for healthy ticket sales to prevent the event making a loss.

Thankfully, the pre-booked ticket sales went very well and we had a healthy turnout at the event. The profit level will undoubtedly be drastically down on previous years (we will know for certain when our Treasurer gives his final report on the event in September) but it should be in-profit to some extent.

As to the event itself, there were one or two ‘technical issues’ that caused headaches for some of our voluntary event crew but, in testament to the extremely fine and dedicated people that they are, none of these issues were allowed to spoil the event for our rally-goers, who seemed to enjoy the event immensely!

Being a part of bringing together and entertaining more than 2,000 bikers, after an enforced hiatus of two years, proved to be both fraught and joyous in equal measure though, looking back on how much

people loved the event, I think the scales have tipped noticeably in favour of joyous!

Our illustrious Open House Editor, Vic Hawkes, tells me that there will be good coverage of this event in this issue of the magazine. I look forward to seeing and reading about what went on beyond the blur of my own bailiwick at the event.

The 30th You’ve Been Nabbed Rally: Next year we will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the You’ve Been Nabbed Rally (though 32-years of the NABD) and though an increase in ticket prices is inevitable, we will be pulling-out all of the stops in making it a spectacular event with more ‘special features’ than you can shake a stick at!

NABD Prize Draw 2022/23: (Can-Am Spyder Trike)

We launched the 2022/23 NABD prize draw on Saturday May 7th 2022 at the 29th You’ve Been Nabbed Rally. The first prize in the draw is a superb 2008 Can-Am Spyder 998cc Rotax trike donated by NABD member Ian Rothwell with runner-up prizes of £500.00 and £250.00 in cash.

The trike is in excellent condition and a real eyecatcher in yellow and black livery. (See poster elsewhere in this issue).

Draw tickets are just £1.00 each (yes, somebody will win this lovely trike for just a quid, how good is that!)

Tickets will be on-sale at all events that are attended by the national NABD information/advice stand until the draw itself, which will take place on Saturday May 6th 2023 at the 30th You’ve Been Nabbed Rally at the Royal Cheshire Showground.

NABD Van:

As if we didn’t have enough problems this year, Phil Morris (NABD Information/advice stall manager) was involved in a minor collision after collecting a trailer we had purchased off eBay. Fortunately, nobody was injured but the insurers decided that the van was a write-off mainly due to its age more than the level of damage incurred.

The van was over 12-years old (we like to get our money’s worth at the NABD) and we had already had discussions about replacing it, though we were hoping to wait until the prices dropped once the microchip shortage had been sorted out.

After looking at all of the available options, the National Committee agreed that, due to the ridiculously high price of new vans at present, we would be better getting one on Contract Hire with a maintenance contract attached.

I spent five-days researching Contract Hire deals and getting prices together for the Committee. I found it incredibly frustrating, though I suppose not too surprising in our current unethical society, that the vast majority of websites offering leasing/ contract hire were advertising deals that do not actually exist in reality!

Time after time I would work out the costs on a website then phone the company to speak to one of their representatives, only for them to quote prices that were often £100.00 per month higher than their website claimed. Once that happened, I had no interest in the actual deal on offer because I refuse to deal with dishonest companies!

Eventually I found a company called Vanarama who had an honest website on which you could work out the cost of the deal and it was exactly what the final quote from their sales people. It had taken more effort and time than I expected to find the right deal but it was worth the wait because I got a good deal from an honest company.

We have settled on a Vauxhall Movano 3500 L2 Fwd 2.2 Turbo which is, in essence, the same van as a Renault Master with a different badge on the front.

We should receive the new van before the end of August (some places actually stated they could not deliver a van until May 2023 due to the shortage of microchips still affecting the manufacturing of vehicles).

Until the new van arrives, we are having to hire vans to get the national information/advice stall and its crew to those events that are large enough to justify the costs. For smaller events Phil is downsizing the stall to a gazebo he can transport in a car.

NABD Adaptation Grants & The Open House Magazine:

Some of you may have already noticed the increasing scarcity of adaptation articles in the Open House magazine over the past couple of years. One member I spoke to asked if this was due to a change of editorial style since Vic Hawkes took over the editorship from me, and I had to explain to him the somewhat embarrassing fact that it is actually due to very few of the people being awarded NABD Adaptation Grants in recent years actually bothering to send us photos and/ or articles of/about their adapted vehicles and the circumstances that led to the adaptations being needed!

We don’t expect everybody to be able to write a coherent and interesting article about their circumstances and adaptations, though it is always nice when somebody does, but in this dayand-age the vast majority of people have mobile phones with which they can take a few photos and send them in so that Vic can add them to a brief article based on the details we get on the grant application forms.

Surely it is not too much to ask that people who receive a grant from the NABD provide us with a photo of themselves on the machine and a couple of close-up photos of the adaptations funded by the grant?

Sadly, of the most recent 75 grants awarded, I think we have received just two or three submissions for Open House! This position has now become so intolerable that we are now making it a condition of the grant that we receive the necessary photos before the grant is paid out.

However, I would like to appeal to everybody who

has had an NABD Adaptation Grant since the start of 2019, if they have not already provided photographs, to send their original photographs in (not ones that have been re-sized for social media. We need files that are at least 500kb in size but preferably bigger) attached to an email to openhouse@thenabd.org.uk and, for those who feel comfortable writing a bit of an article to go with their photos, these would also be most gratefully received.

NABD Annual General Meeting 2022:

Once again the NABD Trustees have made the decision to cancel the AGM for the third successive year. Despite what the current government and much of the mainstream media would like people to believe, Covid 19 is still very much with us and numbers of cases are once again rising to the point where the NHS is being put under great strain.

As a disabilities organisation we have a duty of care to ensure that we do not put members in harm’s way and holding an AGM during this still very active pandemic would be an unjustifiable risk.

I would like to assure members that no constitutional changes or policy changes of great import will take place without ratification at an AGM and hopefully 2023 will see us in a much better position to get back to ‘business as usual’ (if anybody can remember what that was like).

In the meantime, the NABD Adaptation Grants Scheme is fully operational once again and the NABD Learner/Loaner Scheme is also back to normal.

I wish all NABD members and supporters a healthy and happy summer with, to quote a wonderful song by NABD Patron Stevie Simpson, “Fair Travels and Fine Times”!

29th You’ve Been

Three years. Three long and often painful years have passed since we last held our annual shindig at the Cheshire Showground and I was a little apprehensive as to how the event would go given the upheaval the pandemic had on our lives.

Like many of my fellow members of the National Association for Bikers with a Disability, I have spent two years trying to keep myself and my family safe from Sars-CoV-2, the corona virus and its subsequent variants that caused us all to stay home to stay safe for much of that time.

Using the NABD ethos I adapted my life, I improvised and I overcame that challenge. Thankfully I didn’t lose any members of my family, but there were a couple of close calls that friends endured. The photo of my dear chum in hospital with a respirator mask on his face, fighting for his life will remain with me for the rest of my days. His

legendary stubborn streak pulled him through, he prevailed and is still with us, but not without a few scars from his experience.

It was with this in mind that I felt apprehension about a gathering of a couple of thousand bikers in a field in Cheshire, but once on site and meeting up with some of the finest people I have ever had the honour to call friends, all that apprehension melted away. My dear chum Gareth once again chauffeured me to the site, I’m still not cleared to ride after my brain farts of a few years ago and Gareth has been an absolute star for leaving his bike at home to help me out over the years. That’s a true friend right there.

We caused havoc at the gate because once we had our wrist bands sorted out, we just drove on site and found the marshals camping area. Forgot to get our car pass... oops! Sorry Simon. Russ chased

after us in one of the site vehicles and when he saw who it was he said “Oh it’s you!” We had a hug and I got busy setting up my tent before the rain came down whilst Gareth went to sort his car pass out.

Alas the rain was here to stay for the night and, although I was a tad miffed about getting wet, it made everyone even more determined to have a good time. On my first good look around the site I figured most of our guests had turned up on Friday as the camping area was rather busy with folk setting up and settling in for a weekend of fun.

There were many people I haven’t seen for two years that I had to hug as I made my way to Ken’s Kitchen for a brew. There were even more in there that also got a hug and I made the most of each and every one. It was in Ken’s Kitchen where Vic strolled up to me and asked if I had brought my camera. When I said yes he said “Good, I want

some photo’s for Open House!” I hadn’t planned on doing anything other than chilling out over the weekend and had not brought a single auto focus lens with me. I’m glad my Nikon D700 has a focus indicator on it cos I was going to need it! Cheers Vic, you git! Challenge accepted. (There’s no point in having friends and not abusing them! – Vic)

I must have hugged half the crowd as I made my way to the marquees to say hello to our new DJ’s Ian Green and Paul Bratley who stepped up to the challenge this year. Mr Creature, our dear friend, could not attend this year. I had spoken to him about being his shadow if he attended and I would step in to do an hour here and there whilst he got some rest. However, his health issues made the decision for him to stay at home the correct one. Everyone wishes Creature well as he is a much loved member of the NABD family, having raised several thousand pounds and entertained our

guests since his predecessor Russ Page decided to step back from DJ duties.

Paul Bratley was the man who stepped in for me when I was taken to Macclesfield Hospital from our 25th rally. That made him the obvious choice to be the DJ in the adult marquee and a fine job he did of it too. “The music was good and the music was loud” as Bon Scott sang and Paul soon had everyone enjoying themselves as the party got into full swing.

Ian Green stepped in to the DJ duties in the Family/ Real Ale marquee and did not let us down. I have known Ian for many years and was made up to see him again. His years of experience as a Rally DJ shone through in his choice of music and of course the requests from the good folk in the marquee. Liz would certainly have approved.

All we needed now was some live music which kicked off in the Family Marquee with Billy Mac regaling us with songs on his guitar. Billy has been a supporter of the NABD for many years and was a big help when we had to take the event online for two years. It was good to see him in person again

and he soon had folk dancing the night away.

I took a few photos of Billy and toddled off to the Adult Marquee to see Glam Fever just about to hit the stage. Glam Fever are a 70’s Glam Rock band who have played for us in the past and soon hit their stride when, shortly into their third number, the generator powering the PA packed up to a resounding cheer from the audience. Steve and Jim, our resident electrickery guru’s, soon had it back up and running and the band played on until… Yep, the generator went again.

Teething troubles are expected after a two year hiatus and, after the generator went for a third time, Steve and Jim rigged two generators to spread the load. This was troubling both of them as the generator was rated to handle far more than we were asking of it. The hire company organised a replacement that was delivered the next morning. This did mean the rest of the night was a little worrying back stage, but the generators stayed running for the rest of the night.

My evening was taken up by grabbing a few photo’s and having a chat with dear friends as I flitted

between both marquees. The atmosphere being developed was fantastic as it seemed like everyone had one aim. Party! Two years is a long time between events and there was a lot of catching up to be done. As well as my duties as a photographer I was glad to be able to talk with folk in person for the first time since I last put my tent away what seemed an age ago.

I came to the realisation that for some folk it had been three years since they saw friends at the NABD Rally. There are a few who only do our Rally and nothing more for the year. For others it is a chance to take their kids away for the weekend, or even their grandchildren, and they treat it like a family holiday. As I looked around at folks whilst on my travels, I wondered how many had suffered the loss of a loved one to Covid. How many were raising a glass to absent friends at our event? This made our last event in 2019 even more poignant and I kept that in mind for the rest of the weekend as I headed to my bed after a long but thoroughly enjoyable stint behind my camera.

Saturday dawned brightly and the rain of the previous night was soon forgotten as the weather

took a marked turn for the better. This allowed our guests to dry their wet gear out, me included as my jacket was a tad moist. I’m glad I took my Frank Thomas jacket as it kept me mostly dry the previous night and it soon dried off in the sunshine. The conversation in Ken’s Kitchen was all about the fun we had the night before as I tucked into my breakfast and another realisation hit me. How I missed thee, Rally Bacon! Om nom nom nom nom!

It set me up for the day ahead which began where it left off the night before, catching up and having a natter with friends. I also took the opportunity of the sunshine to get my Film camera out and wander around the site to see what I could find. There wasn’t a lot of space left for camping was one thing I found. I also found folk getting their bikes ready to put into our Bike Show so I wandered over to see what folk had spent 2 years tinkering with in the shed. I was not disappointed.

Being in spring our Bike Show is an early chance for folk to show off their pride and joy and there were several outstanding bikes and Trikes on display. I managed to shoot three rolls of film in a short space of time and got my DSLR out and took even

more photo’s whilst chatting with folk milling about admiring the bikes and trikes. My personal favourite was the immaculately presented Honda SS125 that looked like it just left the showroom, but the standard was so high for each category there was no guarantee of a winner. Back Street Heroes magazine once again sponsored the trophies and several happy folk collected their well deserved prizes later that afternoon.

The theme of the weekend was paying tribute to our NHS for going above and beyond the call of duty during the pandemic and I am honoured to call several of them my family and friends. The NHS has scraped us all off the floor at some point and I am not alone in saying I would not be here but for the skills of the Doctors and Nursing staff that cared for me back in 2002. What they gave up over the last 2 years was precious time with their families. Some of them never went home, losing their own battle with Covid at the very hospital where they battled to save lives. We must never forget that.

Many folk took the opportunity to dress up as Doctors, Nurses and Patients. I have to mention

our esteemed Open House editor, Vic Hawkes for dressing up as a Matron and looking frighteningly convincing (Awww! Shucks! – Vic). Our chairman Rick dressed in scrubs and wore a cape with NHS on it to show his appreciation for them too. There were also banners and bunting on the sides of the marquee with some of the supportive slogans we saw during the pandemic and we salute each and every one of you. Thank you for your service

Another highlight of our Rally is the now legendary Smacked Arse Comedy Show and this year saw some outstanding performers joined by up and coming future headliners on the comedy circuit. They told tales of their life during lock down and the difficulties they encountered. Our headline act was Mr Jonathan Mayor, a regular at our rally over the years who had two years of pent up frustration that he spilled before an audience who loved every minute of it. His deserved encore got the loudest cheer I have heard for a long time.

I have to give a shout out to the Armed Forces Bikers whom presented a cheque to the NABD for £2,000 which is ring-fenced for our Armed Forces

Veterans who need their bikes adapting to get them out and about again. Now we are all able to hold events again, the Armed Forces Bikers will be making their usual sterling effort to make sure this fund is topped up throughout the year. Thank you for your service.

All that was left to do was drink more beer and enjoy our fantastic bands that kept us all entertained over the course of the weekend. In the Adult marquee Special Brew, Exhibit A, The Guisley Brothers and Fifth Element showed us what great entertainment is all about. In the Family Marquee a fine mix of acoustic music from Billy Mac and Chris Harwood and Sam Ferris from Exhibit A really complimented the fine music we had from our bands Boomshanka, The Shooters and Cascade.

A special mention has to go to Glam Fever and the Thunder Monkeys who stepped up and performed for us on both nights when we were unfortunately forced into a change due to illness and injury causing a couple of bands to have to pull out.

This was a party that was three years in the

making and boy did our guests enjoy themselves. We had to adapt, improvise and overcome some challenges over the course of the event, but hey, that’s what the NABD is all about. We look forward to seeing you all again in a field somewhere very soon.

David Keeley’s Triumph over adversity

David had a major back injury in the 1980’s. He ended up having a disc removed from his spine, but unfortunately the resultant nerve damage was irreversible.

This type of nerve damage (Polyneuropathy) effects many of the peripheral nerves throughout the body and is degenerative, so slowly gets worse over time.

In 2018 David had another operation to drill out his spine and relieve any pressure on his nerves. It was then that he was told the nerves in his legs were dying.

Although David had managed to continue riding his bike throughout this time, the effect of the nerve

damage started to tell. He had trouble walking and he lost all feeling in his left foot and calf.

As he could no longer change gear on his Triumph Speed Triple, he decided a Kliktronic gear change would help him continue on two wheels. So, he approached the National Association for Bikers with a Disability and was advised to apply for a grant, which was soon approved.

He decided to fit the Kliktronic himself and says it was an easy job.

The grant has enabled David to continue riding, which means so much to him and wishes to thank the National Association for Bikers with a Disability, and all who support them.

David has now had to have a complete knee replacement on his left leg, and later this year he is having his right knee replaced as well.

I’m sure everyone joins us in wishing David all the best for his operation, and hope he is able to enjoy his riding for many years to come.

You may have noticed a distinct lack of articles in the magazine about the people who have received a NABD grant and modified their transport.

Well, this isn’t a choice from me, or anyone else. It’s because people seem to be reticent about sending us pictures and a few words on their newly adapted steed.

So, if you have received a grant from the NABD over the past 3 years or so please send me a few words and a couple of photos about it.

I am in the situation now where I am having to spread out the very few reports we have received, so that we can have at least one in each magazine. But our members would like to hear where their donations are going.

All you need to do is send me a couple of photos (like the ones on here) one of you with the bike/ trike or whatever, and one of the adaption.

Obviously, the more pictures the better. They need to be a minimum of 500Kb for

Due to the limitations of the available space in the the Open House magazine we can not go into minute detail of each and every option, but hopefully this article will give a fairly good overview of the most commonly available options for the adaption of most motorcycles and trikes to suit the needs of riders with disabilities. Where possible we have included the web-site addresses or other contact details of manufacturers. Left Leg: (Amputation, reduced / restricted strength / mobility in the knee or the ankle joints):

The easiest method would be to use an electrongic gear change system such as the Kliktronic push button gear-changer www.kliktronic.co.uk. This unit works by pushing two buttons on the handlebars that operate an electronic actuator connected to the gear pedal. The Kliktronic gear-changer is supplied as a complete, easy to fit kit, which can be used on all styles of motorcycle.

Another method is to use a cross over linkage to the right side of the motorcycle, mounting the gear pedal either beside or in-front of the rear brake pedal.

Right Leg: (Amputation, reduced/restricted strength/mobility in the knee or the ankle joints):

1. Electronic push button gear-changer (to fit 1” and 7/8” bars) (“on-bar” or “under-bar” push-buttons)

2. “Crossover” to the right side of the motorcycle

This is usually a simple matter of transferring the rear brake pedal to a handlebar-mounted lever. This can take the form of a thumb operated lever or “twin” levers. Another method of adapting the rear brake system is to utilise a mechanical linkage or hydraulic extension to transfer the brake pedal to the left-hand side of the machine. This can be sited either beside the gear pedal or directly behind it for heel operation.

Right or Left Arm:

With all adaptions to suit riders with a hand or arm disability we strongly recommend the fitting of a high quality steering damper. When necessary a Velcro glove to handlebar grip can be used to help keep the affected hand on the handlebar & in some cases for amputees, prosthetics can be specially adapted to enable some handlebar use.

However we must stress the importance of never being too firmly connected to a solo motorcycle. If you do have a spill while riding you need to be able to separate from the machine very easily rather than be dragged along by it into what could prove to be a more dangerous situation.

Both the twin levers and thumb brake are available in 1” or 7/8” bar sizes.

Wheelchair Users & Balance problems: (Bilateral amputation, paraplegia, MS, reduced mobility/strength in legs, balance problems, etc):

With these types of disability one obvious issue is that of stability, which usually means the addition of a “third road wheel” whether this is in the form of a bike and sidecar combo or a trike.

In the case of bike and sidecar combos sometimes it is possible to utilise standard outfits when the bike has been converted to “full hand controls”. But there are also some manufacturers who manufacture specialised or adapted sidecar outfits that are specifically designed to suit independent use by wheelchair users such as Motopodd Ltd www.motopodd.com and Unit Sidecars Ltd www.unitsidecars.co.uk

The vast majority of motorcycles do not feature a reversing facility. However, for many people with disabilities, a reversing facility is essential when a motorcycle has been converted to a trike. There are several methods of achieving this; perhaps the oldest method was to incorporate an electric reversing motor, but this has generally proven to be ineffecient and ofter a serious strain on the battery. More recently, purpose built reversing differentials and in-line reversing gearboxes have emerged onto th emarket from the motor racing scene. Companies like Quaife Engineering Ltd
