Dawn mountain Nordic Centre Sanne van der Ros

While the powder is piling up in the mountains, I not only look forward to long-awaited face shots on my fat skis, but also anticipate some great gliding on the corduroy track-set trails on my skinny skis. We are so lucky to live in Golden because it is home to the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre, where a great season is brewing. Last winter, our dynamic community attracted Nordic skiers aged four to 84 years old from across the nation and beyond to try our sweet ski trails in the Canadian Masters National Championships. Afterwards, Golden was featured in SkiTrax Magazine—with continent-wide distribution—as the Mecca for Nordic Skiing. Not bad for a small town, eh? News of our awesome trails has probably spread from Pakistan to Portugal by now. Don’t be surprised if you are greeted with an exuberant, “¡Ola!” on the trails by a broad-smiling Nordic skier from some exotic place this winter. But wait a minute; we’re exotic. You don’t have to imagine beautiful mountain vistas: They are here. Trails like Moosemeat and Super Charger start the long list of groomed tracks for your adventure and an easy, brand new trail connects the upper and lower trail systems. Free maps are available at the trailhead, and lessons, wax-less ski or snowshoe rentals and hot chocolate are available at the new Dawn Mountain Chalet. Events planned this year are the 5th Annual Dawn Mountain Challenge Nov. 24-25 and the Huckleberry Loppet Feb. 10, both in need of participants and volunteers. Get your discounted season’s pass before Dec. 1 at www.zone4.ca or Higher Ground Sports. For more visit www.goldennordicclub.ca

The Great Expectation Kris King Sitting in my home on 11 Street South, staring up at the snow-clad hills and mountains, I have a little angst in me: a feeling that I need to catch up on the activities I missed during the busy summer season. There is a great expectation and a motivation; a relentless drive to pick up the dusty book on my bed stand and finish reading, refine some business development and finally release my creative side by picking up my brushes and paints again. Do you have that feeling too? This great expectation is shared amongst many people in our town. Local Townies are slowly switching out their shorts and flip-flops for winter clothes, stacking their wood for cold winter nights. Artists are preparing for the winter craft faire. Seasonal workers are plotting winter job move. Gardeners are busy canning their crops. Trades-people are winterizing and taking care of indoor maintenance issues. Fall is not a lazy season, but a time to prepare for the coming months, catch up on old projects and welcome winter into our little town. Let the snow fall and our creative culture thrive.

Local Hero: Karen Wilson Faith Dusevic Photos & Text

It is difficult to keep track of what Karen Wilson may be doing on any given day, but volunteering is always a good guess. She has been dedicating her time to positively impact people of all ages in Golden since moving here in 2004. After winning the “Doug Wilson Lottery” and marrying someone equally as funny as her the next year, the young woman realized Golden was her home and those in the community were now a new form of family.

Volunteering is not an option in Karen’s life, but an obligation. This passion was solidified after receiving a tremendous amount of support from the community

It did not take long for Karen to become an integral part of the Golden community. “I’ve always been interested in helping,” Karen explains. “People are always looking for volunteers and I’m a signer-upper.” This positive attitude is mirrored through all those she speaks to and her passion for helping has inspired many others to get involved as well. Despite dedicating her life to helping people she may never even meet, Karen remains remarkably humble. “If we don’t volunteer, things don’t happen,” she casually explains, reflecting the idea that volunteering is not an option in Karen’s life, but an obligation. This passion was solidified after receiving a tremendous amount of support from the community when she travelled to get surgery for multiple sclerosis. “The Golden community has been good to me as well. Everyone was supersupportive when I went for my surgery in Costa Rica in 2010. I promised myself I would give back, at the very least, the amount of good karma everyone had given to me.” Karen has kept this promise and helps the

Local Hero: Karen Wilson community where necessary. Her work with the Women’s Resource Centre is never-ending, as is her involvement with the Golden and District Community Foundation. Karen also plans to be involved with the Youth Centre and supports other organizations in town through donations of items and, most importantly, her time. If volunteering is a hat to wear, Karen has an entire closet full. Amongst her busy schedule, Karen still finds time for herself and her family. “I like to travel and see live shows,” she explains. Karen also plans to giving alpine and crosscountry skiing a try this season. But above all else, she plans to continue helping. “I’ve just seen what a big difference helping others can make. It feels so good to help somebody when they’re having a rough time. It feels good for them and it feels good for you because you’re doing something valuable with your time. When you’ve seen the struggles people go through, it’s hard not to help. You see how fortunate you are in your own situation. It’s important that we all help each other.” Karen’s positivity and genuine love for helping are things many of us aspire to find in our own lives. Even through her own struggles, Karen has found ways to try to help others who will go through the same. After hearing about a contest at Aviva, Karen thought of Golden and what our community needs, her mind wandering to memories of what she and her family experienced this year.

Karen’s cause is Chemo in our Community and is dedicated to bringing chemotherapy treatments to Golden. “We are done with chemo now, but it would be nice if people didn’t have to go through all that travel in the future.” Golden provided chemo until 2003 when regulations were changed and, although it has not been offered here since, Karen and many others believe it can be brought back. “It is not that feasible for people to be travelling. It’s not safe on the roads; somebody in the winter is going to have to drive up and down the valley while sick every two weeks. That’s not okay. It’s an added stress to an already stressful situation. People just want to be at home where they are comfortable.” By press time, the cause will hopefully be in the semi-finals. Regardless of Aviva’s involvement, it is an important cause that the community should continue to support. “Anything can happen. There’s nothing we can’t do if we all pull together and put our minds to it. We can make it happen.” Karen’s belief that we can make it happen is behind so many positive things that have happened in Golden. Whether behind the scenes, on the sidelines or front-and-centre, Karen is there for support. It is difficult to keep track of exactly where she is, but what she is doing can always be traced back to volunteering.

Karen’s cause can be found by “It would be really cool if Doug and I typing “Chemo in our Commudidn’t have to drive every two weeks nity” in the search option at for his chemo treatments,” she says. www.avivacommunityfund.org

Walking across the Rio Canimar bridge during our second day on the island, Marty and I saw a park with dozens of small runabouts and two large dinner cruise boats ready for the day’s influx from Veradero, then we spotted a trailer of kayaks in a corner. What was a pair of winter-weary Canadians to do? We went down to investigate. When we asked about the kayaks, the officials looked dubious and tried to interest us in the more orthodox attractions. We firmly refused, proceeding towards the kayaks. As we waited for someone who knew about them, we studied the kayaks more closely: They were mostly doubles, a few singles, and utterly covered in dirt and guano, all home to small living things. To us, who left a howling blizzard in Calgary the previous morning, they were the most beautiful kayaks in the world. Jose, the bartender at the restaurant next door, showed up with some rusty keys. We pulled down two singles while Jose went for paddles and lifejackets. We cleared out as many geckos as we could and realized we’d need hatch covers for one of them. Jose shook his head: there were no hatch covers for that one. When you haven’t paddled in months and the water is lapping at the boat you are standing next to, it takes something more serious than gaping holes in the deck to dissuade you. Marty agreed to take our packs in the boat with hatch covers and we climbed in and pushed off, heading upstream.

Hunting: Rednecks, Hippies or neither Sarah Jane Osadetz

At 22, I spent 10 days at a hunting and fishing lodge north of Chapleau, ON. I forced myself to watch a hunting group—who brought back a beautiful moose—gut it and butcher the meat. I dined on fresh moose steak that evening.

In this day and age, when kids know more brand names than animal species, we are at a cross roads between technology, nature and our connection to both. We’ve created convenience. It makes our lives so much easier to put a piece of pre-packaged meat on the table from five minutes up the road, so why look farther?

swam and ran around in bare feet; didn’t care much about the dirt I had in my hair, feet or nails; befriended the small insects around me, watching spiders make their webs; and identified birds using binoculars for hours on my grandparents’ front deck. This juxtaposition as a child brought me full circle when, in my 20s, I went from thinking something was wrong with the forestry industry and hunting was for rednecks, to working in forestry and befriending many hunters.

I sought perspective. At 22, I spent 10 days at a hunting and fishing lodge north of Chapleau, ON. I forced myself to watch a hunting group—who brought back a beautiful moose—gut it and butcher the meat. I dined on fresh moose steak that evening. This illuminated my ignorance and the experience brought me to a new level of understanding: Not only do huntDo you know what the animal has ers know a lot about animals, but they are also the harbingers of conservaeaten? But don’t go calling a hunter a hippie; it’s like questions. They watch, read, smell and stalk. They walk, hike and travel saying bomb in an airport. In this change of seasons, we all know who the for days to find and kill their prey. It happens locally every fall—in groups, smart ones are, and they know who they are too. Respect! families and on solo missions. Golden’s culture is diverse and well defined. There are families in our community that teach their children to hunt. Fire arms issues aside, hunting in the wilderness is good for our health, well being, attention span and is educational. Providing for ourselves, whether it be gardening, hunting or a lifestyle combining the two, is part of a responsible living and so important in these times. I stumbled into home ownership with my best friend, D’Arcy McRae, 13 years ago. He wanted to buy house here and be close to Rogers Pass. I joined in as a co-investor—neither of us could buy a house on our own. Golden was, and still is, full of kind, friendly people and you could do anything you put your mind to here. The Town of Opportunity. Deciding to go for a hike on limited verbal directions, we headed up the forestry roads toward Gorman Lake in September. After lighting up and bonding with our own version of green beyond the town limits, we proceeded upwards and onwards into wild country in his Toyota Previa van. Driving along, we were anticipating the thought of moving to a place where the wilderness would instill a sense of adventure and endless possibilities. As we drove into a switchback, low and behold, out walked a hunter in high-vis. Eyes wide open, we were shocked to see a man dressed to the hunting nines, gun-toting and looking for ungulates so close to town. It was enough realize that this was a welcoming into a somewhat unfamiliar place. Times change and the world teaches us a lot of things. I was raised in a number of cities—quintessentially being brought up into a middle-class, suburban life. Yet, my young childhood was spent close to nature: I fished,

I’ve always been fascinated by a glorious moustache. Perhaps it’s because I’m unable to grow whiskers of my own or because I’m the offspring of a long line of moustachioed men. As a fan, I can’t help but notice that the annual monthlong fascination dubbed Movember is verging on defaming the long-held and highly esteemed tradition of the moustache. In the world of facefurniture, a pithy month brings these fabulous decorations into infancy rather than fostering them to the independence of adulthood.

A quick Google search of ‘moustaches of India’ reveals a plethora of moustaches in all shapes, sizes, colours and styles—putting most Golden men’s mere month of growth to shame. So grow on now and let your bristles brim with eager anticipation of your local Movember showdown. But tread lightly as you venture into this month of Movember you lip-brush sporting lads and remember: the life-long commitment to the misplaced eyebrow thrives on the other side of this globe. Perhaps you’ll let your lipsquatter linger just a little bit longer this time around and be inspired by the commitments made by our friends who carry their facial fur with them all year long.

Prostate cancer research and treatment is a great cause to support and certainly one that merits a commitment to raising follicles and funds along with global awareness. In seventh grade art class I painted a still life of a watermelon. Critical opinion was mixed, but the comment I remember most was that my watermelon looked like a disease. It took me 16 years to show my artwork to anyone again. All it took was a creative awakening, a desire to make something, to express something with more than words. In my case it was a quilt and, now I’ve had a taste of what creativity feels like, I want more. But I sit in front of a shelf of empty journals and sketchbooks, unsure of what to do next.

Start small. Is the thought of a daily project for the whole winter a bit overwhelming? Why not start with once or twice a week? It’s your routine and it has got to work for you. Look for inspiration. Check out Noah Scalin’s book called 365: A Daily Creative Journal. It is filled with tips, techniques and suggestions aimed at getting you started on daily creative projects to stoke your artistic fire. Ask friends—or total strangers—for suggestions. Visit the Art Gallery of Golden. Go for a walk in the woods and make sculptures out of natural materials.

Cross-country cycling comes with inherent risks: Speeding down a hill on an open road near Wasaga Beach, ON, Kieren crashed hard after losing control during a speed wobble. He tore up his elbows and arms and was left covered in blood with rags for clothes. The first person to stop to check if he was okay all day was late for work and had to continue on. Another Good Samaritan turned breakfast around and drove him to Wasaga Beach. “The clothes I was wearing were torn to shreds, so I was in my underwear, aching and covered in blood and torn skin. A drunk man thought I was a kindred spirit from the road, chatted for a bit and then left when the [liquor store] opened. I jumped in the water and washed the bits of shirt and road out of my shoulder and knees.” To supplement the inevitable risks, Kieren managed to create some of his own, forgetting to peg down his tent one night. “I was woken up at 7 a.m. by the tent literally eating me as the wind picked up every corner around me. Extreme panic struck when I remembered I relieved myself into an empty chocolate milk carton at some point during the night. I spread myself all over that tent to flatten it out and find the carton before it spilled. This was a tense few minutes, but when I found the carton lying beside my gear and no puddle around, I instantly remembered emptying it out the weird little doggy door thing in the back of my tent. Needless to say, lessons were learned.” With all Canada has to offer, there wasn’t much down time. “I didn’t want to stop. The closer I got, the more I was driven to carry on,” Kieren explains, go-

Autumn Yoga Dalia Yanai

According to the wisdom of Ayurveda—India’s traditional medical system—every season is characterized by different elements. A few months ago we discussed the proper practice regime for summer; now I would like to address autumn’s particular issues. This season is governed by the elements air and space, with the prevailing qualities being cold, mobile, dry and light—think of the air this last little while: it’s cold, windy, dry and feels lighter or thinner. Our daily routine, diet and Yoga practice should address the imbalances this weather may create by emphasizing opposite qualities. Here are some general guidelines: -Keep your practice dynamic and warming: sun-salutations, hip-openers, standing postures and back-bends are good. -Focus on your inhalation: it is warming and energizing. -Focus on grounding: pay attention to your feet, hands or any other part of your body in contact with the ground in any posture—it can be the top of your head. Imagine you are sending roots into the ground through them. -Practice alternate-nostril breathing, Anuloma-Viloma in Sanskrit: use your right hand to block one nostril at a time as you inhale and exhale, alternating sides. -Eat for the season: use a lot of oil in your diet—not deep-fried food, but a good drizzle of high-quality, unrefined oil—choose warm liquids and soft foods like soup, and avoid too much raw, cold and crunchy foods.

Local Plant: Mountain Ash Laura Shaw

for www.northstarbushcraft.com

Clusters of vivid orange berries hang from mountain ash trees, providing Golden with some colourful decorations these days. The berries—or pomes, if you want to get technical— are quite bitter when they are raw, but sweeten up nicely after freezing and thawing a few times. They can be eaten raw, dried or cooked, but are most often sweetened and made into jams, jellies or wine. It is a good idea to remove the seeds before eating large quantities of the fruit. Traditionally, the berries were dried and pounded into flour. They are a great survival food because

they last well into the winter. Keep your eyes open in February or early March, when huge flocks of bohemian waxwings will perch on the branches of a single tree and devour every last berry in seconds. Medicinally, the vivid orange berries are full of vitamin C and a tea made from them can be used as an effective gargle for sore throats. For all you Harry Potter fans out there looking to make a perfect magic wand for Halloween, the rowan tree—another name for the mountain ash—is recognized for its abilities to provide protection and ward off evil and illness.

Wildcat Strong It’s that time of the year again: every seasonal worker is trying to find a way to stretch the budget to buy new skis and boards. As far as beer goes, Wildcat Strong is an average lager with a dirty, hoppy flavour, but its 6.1 percent kick will help you out in these cashstrapped times. No need to move leftovers and ketchup in the fridge, this beautiful beer can be kept cold on the back porch. So get yourself an eight-pack, yes eight-pack, of Shitty Kitty at the BC Liquor Store for $12. Don’t break the bank waiting for the winter storms to come, crack a Wildcat.

Nelson Brewing Company: After Dark The sun will set early and takes its sweet ass time to rise these days, but don’t worry; there is still beer to light your way. Nelson Brewing Company has an organic beer for these dark times, After Dark. This dark, British-style, mild ale pours a deep brown colour with a finger’s depth of head that dissipates into the beer quickly. Taking a whiff, the aromas of roasted malts and chocolate overtones overtake the senses. Tasting the dark robustness knocks you deeper into the night with chocolate, roasted malts and coffee flavours. NBC After Dark can be found at the BC Liquor Store for $11.75 a six-pack. Overall, this NBC beer is an enjoyable drink in these dark times, and remember, everyone looks better After Dark.

MARVEL COMICS NOW Sean Tonelli Don’t call it a reboot. Don’t call it a re-launch either. So what do you call it when Marvel decides to play musical chairs with its creative teams and characters? I guess you can simply call it, Marvel Now. November marks a bold new initiative at Marvel: Gone are some of the most renowned and popular comic book series the world has ever known and, instead, Marvel is giving us a fresh start. This may sound familiar, since DC launched the New 52 last year, but this isn’t that. While the New 52 started with all-new continuity, Marvel is offering a jumping-on point without throwing away the past 70 years the House of Ideas has given us. So let’s bring you up to speed. This summer’s mega event was Avengers Vs. X-men. For the past decade, the mutants have been running a gamut of bad luck. Facing extinction due to the events that sprang from House of M, the mutants found vestige on Utopia, a mutant-only paradise, under the leadership of Cyclops. All was well until the return of the Phoenix, a cosmic entity that inhabits a mutant’s body and destroys the world. The Phoenix is also a symbol of rebirth and Cyclops saw this as an opportunity to restore the mutant race to its former glory, sparking a war between those who’d stop the Phoenix and those who followed Cyclops. Long story short, Cyclops becomes the Phoenix, acts like a huge d-bag, kills Xavier, loses the power of the Phoenix to a teenager and is then arrested.

MUSIC & MUSES BY MENZIES NEW YORK CITY Todd Menzies I think any kid who ever picked up a guitar or listened to a Ramones album has romanticized about NYC. When I arrived I was overwhelmed by the size of all the buildings, it looked as if a city was built on top of another city. They say New York City is the city that never sleeps, so I tried my best to do the same for the week I was there. Jumping into a cab and experiencing the intense traffic of the upper eastside of Manhattan, I tried to take it all in as the cab driver weaved in and out of traffic. After quickly unpacking and enjoying a glass of wine on our rooftop patio, we headed down to Times Square, a 20-minute walk away. It was impressive, but I felt like I was standing in the middle of one big corporate commercial with bright lights and TV screens standing 50 feet tall: this wasn’t what I came to NYC for. The next day we made our way down to Rockefeller Center to attend a taping of Jimmy Fallon Live. Just walking the halls of the building I felt the energy of comedic greats such as John Belushi and Chris Farley. I felt the same humbling feeling when I walked through the doors of CBGB and ran my hands along the spray-painted walls that served as a home to New York’s underground rock scene since 1973. The sounds of Television, the Ramones, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Blondie still echoed throughout the room. What was originally meant to be a Country Blue Grass and Blues club, became the most famous New York venue for bands to play. The Bowery area surrounding CBGB’s has gone from a very run down, low income area to a trendy, fashionable, hip community. The highlight of my trip to NYC was by far the Global Festival held in Central Park. I finally got to see Neil Young, one of my lifelong heroes, perform in front of 60,000 adoring fans. The all-star lineup consisted of K’naan, Band of Horses, the Black Keys and Foo Fighters. Global Citizen hosted the free festival, intending to raise awareness to end worldwide poverty forever.

Manhattan

Photo: David Deng Ever since Boston sold Babe Ruth to New York in 1919, there has been an intense rivalry that gets Yankees fans fired up like they are going to war. After grabbing a beer and a hot dog we found our way to our seats. Boston was winning and continued to lead the game into the ninth inning. A pinch-hit two-run homerun tied the game at three and Yankee Stadium erupted. With a light rain falling, onlookers moved closer and closer to the edge of their seats with every pitch thrown. Finally, in the bottom of the 12th inning New York won the game with a single up the middle and the roar from the fans felt like it could be heard in New Jersey. As we piled into the subway, I could tell that this is what so many New Yorkers live for: Yankees fans are a family and the subway ride home made me feel like I had finally seen the real New York City. I was very content to return to Golden and my proud mountains that surround our homes. It was weird to get back to small town life, but comforting at the same time. I can now join the millions of people who claim, “I Love New York, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

1st Year Anniversary Old Location of CBGB

The remaining nights were spent bar-hopping NYC’s electric music scene, paying my $5-10 cover, drinking cheap Pabst Blue Ribbon and taking in the best that New York nightlife had to offer. I saw everything from Jeff Tain Watts—one of the greatest Jazz drummers of all time—to Brooklyn-based indie-rock band Emanuel and the Fear, who packed the legendary Mercury Lounge in the East Village with Hipsters and university students for their album release. Comparable to a heavier Arcade Fire, Emanuel and the Fear put on a high-energy rock show that blew me away. No trip to New York would be complete without a game at Yankee Stadium. Arriving off the subway, you can feel the intensity of Yankees baseball in October. The Yankees were playing their long-time rivals, the Boston Red Sox.

MUSIC & MUSES BY MENZIES

THE PICKUPS: Travis and Larry Pickering Golden’s own father and son duo, Larry and Travis Pickering, make up the family-harmony-based country-rock band The Pickups. They have an old sound with a new feel, influenced by bands like Steve Earl, The Eagles and, Travis’s personal favourite, Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. Larry is a seasoned veteran in the music scene, dating back to his days with New Buck. Travis has been singing his whole life: with musical roots running thick throughout his family, it just seemed to come naturally. It wasn’t until Travis moved to Lethbridge to go to university that he picked up the guitar. “My roommate just had one laying around the house, so I picked it up and started playing,” Travis states. Since then, he has never put the guitar down and for the past four years Travis has been performing solo in Golden and Calgary, continuously writing new material. I asked Travis what it was like to be in a band with his own father. “It’s just a good energy looking over and seeing my dad. We have so

time to write and perform music. Travis credits his father as a great songwriter and technical guitar player pulling from styles and influences such as Don Henley and Rodney Crowell. Travis recently married Stephanie-Rae and they have begun to settle into life in their hometown of Golden with no real plans of leaving. “It just feels right,” he says about staying here. “Golden has a good music scene, the town is very supportive and all my friends and family are here.”

much fun playing together, and we have a lot of jokes between us,” Travis explains.

The Pickups are currently working on an album, which is being recorded locally by producer Bill Nobel at Strawbale Studios. The expected release is in the spring, alongside their first single, Get Crazy. They plan on touring in support of the album through the Columbia Valley and into Alberta next summer. In the meantime, you can catch The Pickups regularly this winter around Kicking Horse Mountain Resort at The Peaks and Winston Lodge.

There is realness to The Pickups. Larry works his day job as a technician for Coke, while still finding

THE CABIN: Making of an Album Growing up in southern Ontario, I spent a lot of time at my family cabin north of Peterborough. Every summer I would look forward to leaving everything behind and roughing it in the woods for a week. I recently had the privilege to relive the experience, this time without fishing poles. Instead, Willhorse Branden at the Cabin packed up our jam space Photo: Crooked Antler and headed out to a four-bedroom log cabin in the Blaeberry to record our album.

fly by, but time itself seemed to have slowed down while we were there. Five guys, eight days, 11 songs, countless beers and endless whisky later, we had recorded our first album as Willhorse. As we got back to civilization and returned all the amps, guitars and other items people so graciously lent us to use on the album, it seemed surreal. Getting to my house, I turned on my electric heat, already missing the warmth of the crackling fireplace. Kicking Horse Culture’s presents a Live Kicks extra, the Willhorse Album Release Wed., Dec. 12 at the Golden Civic Center. Tickets are $25 available at the Art Gallery of Golden

When we arrived at the Blaeberry Mountain Lodge the lovely owners, Rainer and Renate, came out to greet us. The mountains wrapped around the 160acre property with horses calmly roaming about the grounds. Our producer, Jean Paul Maurice, was already inside and the rest of us quickly made the cabin home, setting up the drums in the middle of the main room. My room became the amp room, where I would fall asleep surrounded by the sounds of guitars ringing out each night. In the mornings we followed the same routine: light a fire, put the coffee on and start making breakfast. The morning would bring a fresh breath of life as we inhaled the autumn air, each day feeling winter getting a little closer. The comforting afternoon sun would quickly melt away any ice or snow that had materialized overnight. Inside our cozy cabin, someone was usually laying down their tracks with Jean Paul sitting in the control room—which doubled as his bedroom. There were often two of us upstairs playing chess and the other on the couch reading a book. As the hours went on and night would find us, the coffee in our hands would turn to beer, followed by whisky in the early morning hours. I feel the experience we all shared making this album will last forever. When we listen back on the recordings we will hear more than just the music. We will hear the laughter when something we tried really worked or see Branden recording his solo to This Love naked in the amp room. I can’t count the number of times I heard someone say, “Whatever’s best for the album” over those eight days—even if that meant getting naked to record a solo because you were thinking too much about it. The days we spent together seemed to

NU-MARK & WASSABI Jeremy Green

Nu-Mark: a collaborator and innovator, a DJ and producer, a connoisseur of hip-hop, funk and soul

Uncle Nu became famous as part of legendary hip-hop band Jurassic 5. They kept flavour and soul in hip-hop very alive in an era when genericsounding beats were being massmanufactured. From the late ’90s to 2006, Jurassic 5 released four albums full of positivity that will always stand out as a great body of work.

During their time touring, Nu-Mark developed the early stages of a routine using children’s music toys to create full funk-driven songs. Toys most people would discard once their kids were old enough to read were now rocking sold out venues around the world—I had the pleasure of seeing it myself in Calgary on J5’s final tour through Canada. I remember being totally mesmerized and grinning from ear to ear, fixated on what he was doing on stage. Six years have passed since J5 disbanded and Nu-Mark has kept very busy producing new music, collaborating with other musicians and producers, and touring the world as one of the best, most technical DJs on the circuit. To top it off, he is bringing his updated toy set to Golden. Nu-Mark has played in Golden before—as has his J5 band-mate Chali 2na—but not for three years and never with his toy set, until now. Wassabi Collective, an insanely funky, five-piece, groov-alicious band from Nelson, are opening and have always been a favourite in Golden. Be sure to check out Nu-Mark’s series of EPs, the Broken Sunlight Series, released this year. Volume 2 features Melissa from Wassabi as part of her Luscious Beats project. Never one to really try to steal the limelight, this man rocks the drums in various locales—jam nights at The Golden Taps and sometimes the Rockwater— and currently drums for an indie-punk band called Frankie’s a Girl, based in Golden. With Neil Peart and John Bonham on his list of influential heroes, Robbie brings a certain style and

grace to his performances including solid Rush-style solos. Along with drumming and working at LP to pay the bills, Robbie has a passion for recycling. From clocks and coasters to TVs, magnets and drums, this artist has an eye for reconditioning. Everything he uses is either permanently damaged or he’s recycling it into something that is useable and has meaning. “I use objects that are mostly damaged or unusable. I find albums at thrift stores or garage sales mainly. Everything I use is recycled,” Robbie states. “When I find a Deep Purple, Billy Joel or Blondie vinyl album for example, I try to use albums that are scratched or unplayable.”

bbie Fowler

R o b b i e ’ s v i s i o n is unstoppable. Intriguing workmanship comes into consideration looking at his reconditioned TVs-turned-fishtanks. It’s inspiring. Robbie articulates nostalgia from media- and music-driven genres like The Simpsons, Scooby Doo and the Beatles in useful ways to honour the memory of entertainment from days gone by. From musical memories to turn-dial televisions, this artist has got a knack for acquiring and staging scenes that attract the eye. “I find figurines and collectables online. I create a place in the fish tank where the fish have a healthy home and the owner of the fish tank has an inspired memory and theme. Most of the time, I give the fish tanks to close friends and family as gifts,” Robbie smiles generously. “They take a long time to make and I can’t bring myself to put a price on them just yet.” When asked about how he came up with the way of creating these lasting and marketable gifts, Robbie answered, “I found someone who was making vinyl coasters and it looked so cool that I ordered their work and took it apart. Then I researched using my own technique

with the kind of materials I wanted to use. This led to album cover clocks and coasters.” Golden’s never-ending wealth of ingenuity, entrepreneurship and creativity is always astounding. Robbie is another one of those residents who just goes about his life doing what he loves and believes in. Using his skills, craftsmanship and passion for music to turn what can be thrown away into something worth keeping. Passion is red and recycling is green. Sounds like Christmas colours are in season, and Robbie will be well stocked at the Christmas Craft Faire this month, where a wealth of talent come out of the nooks, crannies and shadows of our fair land to shine all in one place. HOW THE SKI BUM WAS CROWNED? So you’ve just moved to Golden and think you’ve got what it takes to make it? You wince when you hear the word job and just want to shred every day. Here at the Local Townie, we know it won’t be easy for you to scrape by, so are holding a contest to crown one man or woman the king or queen of the ski bums—for the sake of simplicity and flow off the tongue, we’ll stick with ski bum, substitute snowboard bum if you want. This is part one of a two-part series to score you points toward victory. Keep your scorecard this month and after next month’s issue, we’ll take your tallies and crown a winner, maybe even give them a prize. Even if you don’t think you’ll win, see how you do against the best of the best bums. Good luck, and enjoy.

Accommodations Roommates to rooms ratio – a true ski bum saves on rent by living in crowded accommodations Thermostat temperature – a true ski bum bundles up instead of wasting money cranking the heat Empty beers on counter minus clean plates in cupboard – a true ski bum lets the empties pile up and washes one dish to eat Number of condiments minus types of meat and cheese in the fridge – a true ski bum forgets that there’s already 2 ketchups and 3 relishes in the fridge, but can’t afford fancy meats and cheeses Bonus points: No accommodations – I don’t know if a true ski bum pulls this off, but someone slept near Kicking Horse Trail a lot of last winter Penalties: Bed – a true ski bum barely needs one Appliances – a true ski bum doesn’t have many

Gear Starting bank balance – a true ski bum failed to save this summer Weight of gear bought minus dollars spent – a true ski bum manages to get a lot for very little Feet of tape used to patch holes or hold gear together – a true ski bum uses duct, Tuck and hockey tape to make do Age of your newest outerwear – a true ski bum would love to buy new Arc’teryx or Burton Gore-tex every year, but they can’t Bonus points: You only own cotton socks – a true ski bum knows cotton is cheaper than wool or poly Penalties: Number of merino wool layers – a true ski bum knows only Nelson hippies need that trendy crap

Setup Number of previous owners – a true ski bum can shred harder than all of them anyway Number of core-shots – a true ski bum rides over rocks to the goods Centimetres of missing edge – a true ski bum knows edges are for groomers, not pow Snowbladers: Do you only own snowblades? – a true ski bum would wonder if that’s amazing or sad Bonus points and penalties – a true ski bum doesn’t care about matching, and I’m not talking about fashion coordination

Navigating sexual health services can be tricky. Interior Health’s public health nurses want residents of Golden to know what is available in our community and how they can access local services. Golden Public Health, in the community wing of the hospital, offers emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and councelling free of charge. Emergency contraception, also known as Plan B, is after-the-fact contraception when there is birth control failure, or unprotected or unplanned sex occurs. Plan B is most effective if taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, but still provides some protection up to five days afterwards. Local nurses also assist with pregnancy counselling options. The Golden Public Health office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday—closed for lunch between 12 and 1 p.m. To speak with a public health nurse phone 250-344-3001. Options for Sexual Health (Opt) is a drop-in sexual and reproductive health clinic that provides services the first and third Wednesday of every month. Opt is open between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. in the community wing of the hospital. Pregnancy testing and counselling is available as well as Plan B for $15. Lowcost birth control pills can be purchased and pap and sexually-transmitted infection (STI) testing is provided. Please see www.optbc.org for more information or phone 250-439-8331. Emergency contraception can also be purchased for $30 over the counter at Gourlay’s Pharmacy—open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—or People’s Drug Mart—open Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After hours, Plan B is available at the emergency department of the Golden Hospital. Birth control, STI and pap testing are also available at the Golden Medical Clinic, 250-344-2211. They are open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.— closed for lunch between 12 and 1:30 p.m.

With great love sometimes comes great sorrow and, as the seasons change, we may see a change in ourselves. Living in a transient town, we find ourselves having to say goodbye to our friends and lovers as they go off on new adventures, and what are we left with? I’ve heard stories of people in the area who distance themselves from making new friends each season to avoid the disappointment when they’re left behind. After more than a few seasons, I’m beginning to realize why some people feel this way.

As the leaves have changed colour and fallen to the ground and the excitement of winter draws nearer, we must realize there are going to be a lot of new faces in town and it’s an opportunity for people to start fresh. Every changing season is an opportunity to renew and rejuvenate; we don’t have to move to start something new. Just keep in mind that we were all new to something at one point or another and making new friends or lovers—for however long it may be—can be rewarding and educational.

I’ve made a few really good friends I encourage everyone to make at the past two seasons and find it hard least one new friend and maybe a few to picture life without them. It’s lovers this winter season. Goodbye to time for them to leave, the reality some and hello to a fresh start! is setting in and I find myself wondering if I’ll ever see them again. You can imagine how hard it is to find good friends when some people in this world are consumed with gossip, trends and living up to standards not everyone chooses to follow. I’ve presented myself in The Local Townie as a free-spirit: I do what I want, who I want, when I want and I only want friendships that allow me to communicate openly about my sometimes promiscuous ways without judgNow serving Golden at 828 10th Avenue South ment. HORRORSCOPES

LOCAL BANDS FOR HIRE

Prescribed by Jason Eastwood Scorpio – The November rain whets the inside of your brain when you bottle up your emotions and only cry on the inside. Put on a Guns ’n Roses ballad and let it all out: you’ll feel better, I have no doubt. Sagittarius – Add some spark to your love life by keeping a box of wooden matches in your underwear. Capricorn – Uranus is visible during the full moon this month, which translates to a new era of openness and lack of inhibition surrounding your existence. Wear your heart on your sleeve and keep your brain in the basket this month. Aquarius – You will discover your hidden talent for mathematics this month when you inexplicably start wearing a pocket protector and horn-rimmed glasses. If this doesn’t seem to add up for you, don’t worry it soon will. Pisces – Give your self a pat on the back this month champ. You are a highly creative individual except when it comes to art, science, common sense and general thinking. You are also an exceptional taskmaster except when it comes to getting things done. Aries – Plan for your future with some long-term investments this month. Capitalize on global warming by opening an allinclusive resort in Fort St. John: In just over 50 years it’ll be the new Mexico. Taurus – Give up being the bull in the China shop and start being the ferret in the bathtub. Gemini – Sometimes the messages that guide your life arrive in peculiar ways. Expect a very important fax from the late ’90s this month. Cancer – Expect a career change next month after the Apocalypse. Think about something in post-Armageddon mercenary work. Leo – Let your words flow like a soft winter breeze this month as you turn your smoothness up to terrycloth levels. Become the kind of person who likes to relax with a good documentary and pot of oolong tea. Virgo – Unclutter your life by donating all of your stuff to the Local Townie. Libra – If life gives you lemons, give life the finger and then regift them.
