To our readers: The end of the school year is a time of rituals. There are hard-earned and long-coveted rites of passage like Senior Assassins, Senior Skip Day, Senior Slump; annual events like Semi and Prom and graduation; and there are, of course, the more banal, logistical rituals — handing in cap-and-gown forms, senior check-out, shelling out $30 for a textbook you swear you turned in last year but that, yes, you probably actually lost. This letter, and this section, is the last ritual left in our time on The Roar. Proofs and paste-ups and PDFs have become so ingrained in our lexicons and our lives — it’s hard to imagine life before them, even harder to imagine life after them. Seriously, clichés aside, it is both saddening and unsettling that Roar is, from here on, forever consigned to the past. So, what’s left? We have spent the last few days thanking our adviser (the fearless Ashley Elpern), our editors and our reporters for making our job enjoyable and way, way easier, but one thank-you still remains: for you, our readers. While Roar editors definitely spend more time with each other than is healthy, it is you guys who make our job worthwhile. You are the ones who pick up The Roar on paper day, who ignore math lectures to read an article or laugh at Corey Samuels’ column on fun page. We hope we have made your South experience a little more interesting, too, through our coverage of local political machinations or sports playoff games or B.J. Novak’s fall musical (sorry if you were excited about that). Creating the newspaper this past year has been, at times, an exercise in patience. We spent nights crashed on each other’s couches, passing around pints of Ben and Jerry’s, CMYK-ing photos and writing satire. We worked on the last night of summer vacation, most holidays, our final days at South. We ignored our parents’ warnings that we were ruining our eyes and our spines by hunching over computers for up to nine hours at a time. We do it, of course, because writing and editing for The Roar has been incredibly rewarding. Using The Roar as an excuse, we got to investigate anything about South or Newton in general that struck our fancy: We explored local politics (again) and the school system’s impressive bureaucracy, learned about esoteric talents, found all five of South’s conservatives — all this while harmonizing to Taylor Swift, yelling at broken printers and eating dozens of bagels with chive cream cheese. Alas, bagel’d paste-ups are now gone, but we leave the paper in the best of hands. Mona, Andrea, Carina, Noah — you are all brilliant and capable and wise beyond your years, and we have no doubt you will discover how to make The Roar your own. We can’t wait to read new issues of Volume 33 from our respective colleges, laughing (maybe?) at your Cat’s Meows, filling with pride and a touch of jealousy. We would also like to take this space to thank The Roar for what it has given us — not only the knowledge and the friends, but the experience itself. The Roar has made us better people, more responsible and more excited about the world. As we graduate, we do so with the knowledge that we have been part of a tradition stretching back 32 years and remain members of a community that encompasses every Roar alum. It’s a special thrill when an old editor likes your Facebook post, or when the Volume 4/5 EiC emails you with an idea. So, here we are, soon to move on to newer rituals. We hope you guys had as much fun as we did. Volume XXXII Senior Staff Nathaniel Bolter

For the past four years, all of my teachers have had a profound impact on my intellectual and emotional development. I wish I could thank all of them in detail — especially Mr. Rinaldi, Ms. Shannon, Ms. Honeyman, Mr. Petrizzi, Mr. Jenkins, and Ms. Murphy-Ferguson — but that would require quite a bit more space. So here are a selected few. Dr. Paul Estin: Thank you for playing the guitar for us in history class, for brightening my day whenever we talk in the hallways, for complaining about the latest studies in psychology and for being the most outgoing history teacher ever. And thanks for returning my book, by the way. Mr. Brandon Schmidt: Thank you for sparking my interest in physics and TAships over the past four years, for helping me recover from a C+ to an A in third term freshman year and for making me realize that I have enough potential energy stored in me that I can successfully convert into kinetic energy. Mrs. Alice Lanckton: Thank you for uplifting us by cracking jokes and telling captivating stories about your childhood “right after the end of the Civil War.” Thank you for teaching us how to “remain calm and act cool,” and for being my number one picture book customer. But most importantly, thank you for building a tightly knit community of students who supported each other even outside the Latin classroom. Ms. Ashley Elpern: Thank you for putting a sarcastic and hilarious (dare I say gossip girl?) twist on U.S. History that helped me realize how crazy most people are in the world, and for getting me hooked onto Chobani yogurt. Also (ahem) shout out to you for being an awesome — as always — Roar advisor. Dr. Hema Roychowdhury: Thank you for kindling my passion for physics, and for accommodating the only student without a smartphone by letting me use the class phone. Thank you for being a key emotional support throughout the college application process (you were essentially my second guidance counselor), and for being the only teacher at South whose conversations with others I could interrupt just to say hello. Mr. Brian Baron: Throughout middle school and high school, my English teachers taught me one important thing: that I should cut out fluff wherever possible and write with precision. Mr. Baron, thank you not just for teaching me that I should cut out meaningless words, but for instructing me on how to do that. Ms. Donna Segal: Thank you for always being there when I needed you to sign this, approve that and accommodate schedule changes. But more importantly, Ms. Segal, I cannot thank you enough — I will never be able to thank you enough — for being the hero who played a crucial role in helping me realize my academic dreams.

Giulio,

Each year, two members from the graduating class are awarded the Senior Cup. These nominees, selected by their classmates, exhibit excellence in service, leadership and scholarship. The two winners will be announced during graduation. Here, the nominees share their favorite South memories with The Roar.

Senior Cup Finalists, cont’d My favorite memory at South was probably this year when the girls soccer team made it to the tournament and received a night game at our home field for our first game. Throughout the season, we were told time and time again that we would be a rebuilding year, as we were a young team, and thus we were not expected to go very far. The fact that we were able to get not only a home game, but a home game at night was priceless and proved how hard we worked to achieve our goal. We not only showed our community, but most importantly ourselves that anything is possible with hard work and dedication, which is what allowed us to thrive.

Ava Shaevel One of my all-time favorite memories was when I delivered my fourth and final South Senate election speech at the end of junior year. In the moments leading up to the speech, I was feeling a little awkward since I was wearing a blazer, a tie, and khakis while everyone else was in sweats. I went up to the podium, pulled myself together, and went ad lib for a minute and poked fun at my own state of overdress. For the first time in my life, I felt confident speaking in front of a large audience – so much so, that I wrapped up the speech with an impersonation of President Obama and cracked up the entire crowd. That speech was definitely one of my fondest memories at Newton South, and the memory will stay with me for a very long time.
