Dear Readers, We’re finally here. High school, at times, felt never-ending. After handing out issues of The Roar at last year’s graduation, we sat in the wellness classroom and watched the Class of 2017 enter the field house. “Can you believe that will be us in a year?” we asked. Then, the fact that we would graduate was inconceivable, and yet, here we are. Since we walked into South four years ago, much about the school has changed. There are solar panels over the parking lot, a green space where the L bench used to be and a push toward school spirit and unity. All of these topics sparked debates, and we were lucky enough to get to report on them alongside many, many more. We joined The Roar as freshmen, wide-eyed and ready to start high school. Little did we know how invested we would become in this paper. We went to school committee meetings, tried to understand the NPS budget, transcribed interviews for hours, stayed up until 1 a.m. (and occasionally 3 a.m.) to finalize everything — and we enjoyed every moment. We interviewed people we wouldn’t have talked with otherwise, we learned skills we couldn’t learn in a classroom and we made our own contributions to the South community. We want to thank you for reading The Roar. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn about, interview for and report on issues that are important to South. We strove to create a paper that informs. This past volume, we’ve covered a broad and diverse array of stories, from South’s own MaestroChef to the Newton mayoral race. We also aimed to spark conversations about our school — thank you for engaging in those important, much-needed conversations about the racial climate at South, grade pressure, academic integrity and more. Our readers make creating The Roar worthwhile, but our staff makes creating The Roar possible. For that we cannot thank the Volume 34 staff enough. Thank you for your enthusiasm, passion and dedication to making each issue better than the last. You were constantly pushing us, yourselves and each other to improve every aspect of The Roar. You took up the challenge to improve design and content and acted on your suggestions. To our staff, we are also so thankful for your energy and spirit. We could always count on your humor and positivity to make Roar fun. There are so many moments to look back on and smile about: playing laser tag, waiting 45+ minutes for our Lee’s order to come (and inevitably forgetting a few items), having too much fun with our front-page photoshoots and so many more. Saying goodbye to The Roar is bittersweet: we are incredibly sad to be bidding farewell to something that has been a defining aspect of high school for us, but we are excited to watch the future of The Roar unfold. Volume 35, you have already shown your commitment and dedication to this paper and its community. We are so proud and impressed, and we can’t wait to see what more you do. senior cup finalists Every year, members of the graduating class nominate classmates who show excellence in service, leadership and scholarship for the senior cup. Faculty will announce two winners during the graduation ceremony.
Daniel Abdulah Debate team has definitely been very significant. ... I came to South very soft-spoken, not very confident, ... and learning photos by Netta Dror how to speak [and] finding my own voice was definitely helpful in terms of personal growth. It’s felt like finally after four years, I’ve found my home, and I’m going to be really sad to leave this place, but it was a heck of a ride and I’m really glad to be a part of it.

Caleb Fried My favorite memory from South is preparing for science team meets with some of my friends. What keeps occurring to me again and again is how everyone is really kind when you talk to them. Everyone is really willing to talk to you. It’s not like the movies, ... where everyone is cliqued off. People hang out with different people, but if you go up and start a conversation with somebody or wave to somebody in the hall, they’re going to wave back and smile and be nice.

I’ve been honored to be a class officer for the past two years, and this year has been especially crazy and exciting. ... Class office is probably the thing I’m most proud of and most involved in.
[Chorus is] a class I was in from the beginning of freshman to the end of senior year. ... Being able to kind of grow together, not only as musicians but also as people, is really rewarding and wonderful.
People becoming their own strong characters is something I love about South and something I’m going to remember. I’m going to remember the good things about South.
I’ve learned a lot about the value of sleep and of joy and play and other things that are necessary in counterbalancing stress and hard work.

Coming here to the Black Student Union really gave me a chance to look into my culture and bring my culture to a school like Newton South, which is predominantly white, and just share that with others.
I really grew as a leader on the track team. ... Then eventually becoming editor-in-chief [of Denebola], I really got to appreciate what it means to be a part of a tight-knit community and ... working hard alongside your friends.
I’ll remember how to be a self-advocate. With a school like South where it’s so big and you can always slip through the cracks, ... I really learned how to speak up for myself and use my voice.
A lot of the kids really want to leave behind a legacy. ... A lot of students are in tune with different social issues and other types of issues and are really aware about trying to make a difference.
