THE GLORIES OF ROME

Italy! A byword for passion and style, epic scenery and tumultuous history, great food and grand opera. Composers for film, the opera house and the concert hall have all found a rich source of inspiration in Italy’s scenic locations and vivid stories. This concert celebrates all things Italian in glorious orchestral technicolour as Stephen Bell conducts the Hallé in a performance with something for everyone, whether it’s Hans Zimmer’s spectacular score to Gladiator or Berlioz’s riotous Roman Carnival overture. British tenor Christopher Turner sings the songs and arias, including, of course, the one immortalised by Luciano Pavarotti at Italia ’90, Puccini’s ‘Nessun dorma’. Capping it all, there’s a sensational finale in Ottorino Respighi’s symphonic poem, Pines of Rome, ending with a Roman army marching into the capital, its heavy tread heralded by a blaze of trumpets.

The Hallé presents a celebration on the 65th anniversary of the formation of the Bee Gees and their musical legacy, which has seen record sales of over 220 million, setting them among the best-selling artists of all time. Following on from the acclaimed celebration of Elton John with the Hallé last year, conductor Richard Balcombe and our star soloists guide us through the Bee Gees highly successful career: from the early period in the 1960s and ’70s, through to their career defining multi-award winning soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever in 1977, their burgeoning reputation as writers and producers for other leading artists in the ’80s to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
