hat old saying, “The best things in life are free,” rings truer when a bicycle is included on the list. Alas, bicycles cost good money, but at Bici Libre (Free Bike), these economics are reconfigured so that price is less of a priority. Ariel Climer is the project’s executive director, who offers some unique programs. If you need a bike fixed, Bici Libre will fix it for you, but the driving idea is that you come in, learn a little about the machine and fix it yourself.

ici Libre is a self-described “co-op” located at 1205 West Sixth Street, just on the outskirts of downtown. It is a nonprofit provider of all things bicycle.
head volunteer ray vietia of bici libre Head volunteer Ray Veitia says if you need a place to dump an old bike, Bici Libre will take and drop it on the tangled piles of parts that make up the establishment’s interior. If you just need to buy a bicycle, Bici Libre will sell you one of its own confections. There is also an “Earn a Bike” program which allows those who don’t own a bicycle to work at the shop learning the insand-outs of the miraculous bi-machine and fixing whatever models need mending until they’ve earned enough credits to pick out their own.
Bici Libre has been running since 2010, when it was part of The Bicycle Coalition. The group went “independent” in 2013, says Veitia. “We don’t operate on grants,” he explained. “We work with what comes through the door.” The group gives lectures and workshops at schools and job fairs alike and hopes to establish monthly sessions at the Sixth Street digs. It also hosts rides around downtown when staffing and other criteria permit.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Tell us about your first pieces. My first pieces were in random spots in LA, mostly throw ups and tags. The chickens first came to be in 2002 near the old Belmont tunnel across from the Bob Baker puppet theater. That wall is still running today, but I have redone it 3 times since then.
Where is the best place to see your art? My art is all thru downtown, 2nd and Hill, Beaudry and 1st, 7th and Santa Fe by Pizzanista, Container Yard, all over Echo Park, Glendale and 2nd, 4th and Mission, Silver Lake, fudge, I can’t remember a lot of them, but they are out there. I’m glad a lot of communities have accepted them as part of the enviroment (gentrification puts them at risk) but I do a lot of commission work too, to buy paint for “my other walls.”

Some of the characters CACHE INVOLVES IN HIS WORK ARE BY OTHER artists, like his buddy Atlas who is known for those badass Cats that were in the news a few years back (and ARTIST eyer, as seen on the cover). What’s your favorite piece? My favorite piece at the moment is with my buddy Aiseborn from UTI. It’s a huge wall we finished last month on the Melrose and Heliotrope area.
Have you done anything for charity? I have gone to Guatemala and done paint clinics with our friends from GuateGraff to keep kids from joining gangs and get them involved with the arts. I have mentored youngsters on painting technics. I did the Southwestern Brown Symposium: Art & Revolution talks about my artwork, and how it helps brighten communities.
What’s Up with the Chickens? The roosters or chickens were inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda. He talked about humans being stuck in “humaneros” or human chicken coops, and said that we are the product for the “energy vampires or “masters or creators” to feed on.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT PAINTING, WHAT ELSE do you like to do? I started riding mountain bikes at the age of 17; I breathe mountain bikes. I worked as a bike messenger in DTLA for 11 years and I race endurance mountain bike races. I also work as a bicycle mechanic to maintain my addiction of two wheels. So when I paint bikes, it’s to promote the use of the bicycle as a valid transportation, entertainment and spirit lifter.
When and why did you get into graffiti art? I got into graffiti art in early 90-91. I grew up right next to the world-famous Belmont yard, and all I had to do was walk a few blocks and see the ghetto superstars create masterpieces. I fell in love with it right away. I was born in Guatemala, I migrated to the states at the age of 10, I’m almost 40 now, and I am 100% Guangelino. I think I got the art and thrill seeking from my father, who was a musician, could draw and raced motocross in Guatemala. R.I.P.
What advice can you offer the next generation of graff artists? My advice to the next generation is simple: respect those those that came before you, don’t talk shit about others, they always find out, the streets got ears and mouths,
don’t try to buy a wall that someone already has, and always do you, never bite, and even if it’s kind of wack, it is better than taking bites.
If you had it your way, what would you change about Downtown Los Angeles? It would be kind of cool if DTLA could invite more local artists to produce artwork and communicate with the amazing amount of talent the LA graffiti and street art scenes have to offer.
Any Future plans? Keep the rubber side down, and keep painting. I got a commission wall in RI at the end of August which I’m pretty excited about. Right now I got 3 walls coming up in the east Hollywood area, and I’m finishing one this week in the Pico and Normandy area with some old-school graffiti heads.

LAUGHING MATTERS Nous Tous By Citizen of Culture in Chinatown The exhibit focuses on the subtle and profound gender discrimination that women in stand-up comedy confront on a daily basis. Some of it is unabashed misogyny, but a lot of the sexism in comedy is structural, even unintentional. By sharing the stories of women in stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, LAUGHING MATTERS hopes to open up a larger discussion about sexism in the 21st-century workplace. t’s been two years since ART APPETITE LA began raising money for charities during the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk. Although there has been more controversy than proceeds, their team at Art Walk is steadfast in its efforts to turn the crowds of Art Walk and the community into art-buying philanthropists and this month they are raising money to help end malaria in Africa. visitor at art appetite la (7th & spring)

nd there it was, what seemed like the perfect solution to all that troubled the Historic Core. To aid with the resurrection of the seemingly forgotten strip of land that separated Skid Row from the rest of Downtown’s booming economy, Gallery Row and the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk worked like a charm. In roughly 10 years, thanks to the visionary developers, artists, gallery owners and independent event planners, the Historic Core of Downtown, once a no man’s land, decorated with burning trashcans, trash cans and mirroring Skid Row, had become had become the #1 destination on the 2nd Thursday of the month for over 25,000 visitors from around the world. But as the crowds grew, so did the bill, starting with street clean up, removal of vandalism, policing and a half million dollar settlement to the family of Marcello Vasquez, the 2 month old baby, who died due to injuries he suffered in a horrific accident at the corner of 4th and Spring in July of 2011. The beginning of the end for the Downtown Art Walk as we knew it, as controversy swirled over efforts to calm the event, ensure public safety, keep protestors from insighting the police and continuous disagreements over just who had the right to capitalize off of the event. More trouble than it was worth to many, most organizers threw in the towel, the Downtown Art Walk non-profit focused on their own events, gallery owners facing higher rents closed their doors and the large crowds stopped coming. In Spring of 2014, after petitioning the City, the first permit in over 3 years for an open-air parcel inside the Art Walk footprint was granted to ART APPETITE LA. The event ran successfully for four months, gracing the pages of LA Magazine, but when it shut its doors, the indepen-
dent artisans once encased in a parking lot with electricity, waste facilities and crowd support were forced to migrate across the street to the outside gates of Spring Park. Then there were some, now there are many. In the past two years, independent artisans have been flocking back to the Downtown Art Walk setting up in spaces that haven’t been roped off by caution tape, in hopes of sustaining their livelihoods during the Walk. dtla-weekly.com darker streets on Main to a high traffic area on 6th and Spring. Some are veterans, others musicians ready to keep timing as thousands of Art Walkers march by.
The Religious Ones The Hare Krishna Mantra is another staple of the Downtown Art Walk that’s hard to miss. They have taken up post just south of 5th and Spring, about 15 in number, and they have to be the happiest non-intoxicated group among the night’s regular attendees. Oh, and Jesus has been seen at Art Walk in recent months too.

The Skid Row Drumming Brothers These guys have been beating drums during the Downtown Art Walk since the early days and they have no plans for stopping. They have also migrated from

A year later, ART APPETITE would establish a second location on 7th & Spring with a separate band of food trucks and independent artisans willing to use their Art Walk space to help generate money for various charities. Across from the Hive Gallery, the location attracts all ethniticies and socio-economic groups from around the globe. Non-profits are welcome to set up and collect donations. This week, END MALARIA NOW will have access to thousands of Art Walkers willing to make donations and learn about their cause as they enjoy lowamp music and a variety of exotic gourmet reciepes brought to the Downtown Art Walk by Richeeze Melts, Ridges Churros, Pinch of Flavor, Fruit Frenzy, Green Truck, Curry Wurst Truck and many others. The Broad’s contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles is home to 2,000 works of art and attracts its fair share of visitors every day on Grand Avenue. Pershing Square was first dedicated in 1866 and has been going through a series of redesigns since 1911 to reflect the social and economic growth of the city. The Reef

very 60 seconds, a child under 5 years of age dies
from malaria in Sub-Sa-
haran Africa. While millions turn a blind eye to the suffering, a few have stayed after seeing the devastation to face the epidemic head on, fighting the zombified mosquitoes that infect the blood of innocent African children while they are sleeping.
T
he first time Richard Harding, founding member of End Malaria Now, walked into a hospital in Kenya, seeing all of the sick and dying children who were infected with malaria, he immediately knew he had to make a difference to prevent the death of innocent children. As soon as he returned to America, he founded the organization End Malaria Now. With End Malaria Now, all of the donations go towards the purchase and distribution of insecticide-protected bed nets, coaching Community Outreach Specialists to work hard year-round and raising awareness and funds to end malaria
RICHARD HARDING AND END MALARIA NOW within our lifetime. Each Each year, End Malaria Now takes funds and uses them to distribute bed nets in a region of Africa that has been greatly affected by malaria. This year they plan to raise enough funds in order to take 30,000 bed nets to Rwanda and Sierra Leone in 2017. During their distribution trips, their team strives to be as hands-on as possible, hand delivering every bed net to each service location and assisting in hanging the nets themselves along with other volunteers. They also get to know the people at the locations that they service, putting themselves at risk and doing whatever else
it takes to save lives. The team takes every precaution before each trip, which includes taking malaria tablets that boost their immune systems to protect against infection, applying insect repellant and using the bed nets themselves when they are sleeping at night. Now, for the first time in Downtown Art Walk history, you you can help save the life of a child in Africa.
