Second annual 3MT contest a success Grad student takes home $5,000 prize for heart disease research Angela England

T

he Robert B. Schultz Lecture Theatre at St John’s College hosted the U of M’s second annual Three-Minute Thesis competition for graduate students on Feb. 25. Judging the event was Patricia Bovey, chair of the U of M’s board of governors; the honourable Theresa Oswald, Minister of Jobs and the Economy for the province; and Fiona Odlum, assignment editor with Breakfast Television for CITY-TV Winnipeg. The goal of the contest is simple: graduate students must sum up their thesis research into just three minutes and present it to an audience. In many cases this means the difficult task of whittling down years of research into this short format. The competitors were allowed a single, static PowerPoint slide to go along with their presentation, and had to meet a number of criteria upon which they were being evaluated. Scoring was based on how enthusiastic the students were, along with how clearly contestants communicated the significance of their research, and whether they were careful not to “trivialise or dumb down” their explanations. In an evening that was equal parts entertaining and educational, the audience had the opportunity to hear from a cast of finalists that included nine doctoral and master’s students weeded out from three prior heat events. Paul Samyn, editor of the Winnipeg Free Press,

was the emcee for the night and kept the tone of the competition light with jokes between each presentation. The real stars of the show, though, were the contestants themselves. The graduates—enrolled in the programs of interior design; physiology; food sciences; immunology; community health sciences; the National Resources Institute; and English, film, and theatre—presented on topics ranging from the redesign of fitness clubs to be more inclusive to non-binary identities, to the construction of bio-prosthetic heart valves. The food sciences doctoral student Havva Filiz Koksel’s thesis on the perfect loaf of bread won her the “People’s Choice,” an award voted on by the audience that comes with a $1,000 prize. Koksel’s delivery was fun and energetic as she explained how X-rays make the bubbles in dough yeast “dance,” accompanying the explanation with a little shimmy of her own. Having worked on the subject of bread for three and a half years as her PhD project, Koksel says compiling those years of research into just three minutes was both the most difficult and the most fun part about the process. “Because it isn’t only summing it up to three minutes, but it’s also summing it up for the general public; we’re not allowed to use the scientific jargon [that] we’re very comfortable with everyday.”

Two thousand dollars went to finalist Olivia Sylvester. The doctoral student, enrolled in the Natural Resources Institute, talked about protecting the rights of indigenous peoples’ access to their cultural foods in terms of managing rainforest biodiversity. “Often, forest-managers don’t know how [to do this] because the people that manage forests are rarely the people that rely on them. In fact, only recently have some policies even recognized the need to balance the right to food with the goal of protecting nature,” said Sylvester. Sylvester’s research took her to Costa Rica where she lived with the Bribri people for eight months in the forest to learn about their way of life when it came to accessing their food. With content that needed to be cut for length, Sylvester says the most important aspect of her research that she would have liked to add to her presentation was the rich cultural history of the people and the fact that they “had been living in their lands for thousands of years managing their own resources for thousands of years.” First place and the prize of $5,000 went to Andrea Edel, a physiology doctoral student who looked at flaxseed and how it works in lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol – a thesis she has been working on for four years. “I started a draft [waiting in] a doctor’s office with my daughter [and I] started writing—didn’t even know I was accepted yet to even do this and I just started [jotting] ideas down—and this [was] probably a month before it started, just in case,” said Edel. “Because you just cannot rush something like this; you have to really think it through carefully and put it down on paper. As you think things and change things, a work of art comes out of it, I guess.” The experiments of Edel’s research, touched upon in her presentation, showed “the largest reduction in blood pressure that has ever been observed using a nutritional product [and] a significant decrease in cholesterol.” Edel’s performance also had a very personal touch to it. During her presentation she mentioned how her grandparents’ deaths were caused by a heart attack and stroke, respectively – both linked to high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Edel’s mother is another person

close to her who has recently been diagnosed with elevated blood pressure. “I fear, based upon our genetic history, she may suffer the same fate as her parents. What does this mean for me, and my children?” Edel asked the audience.

3MT winner Andrea Edel in her lab days after the contest

“When I did my heat competition I was actually very emotional,” she said on the topic of her grandparents. “When I look at their pictures, and when I look at their faces, that’s when it becomes really tender to the heart. So I try to separate that a little bit, but it’s my family, so I can’t completely walk away from that.” Upon being asked what she plans to do with the winnings, Edel says she’s “definitely a big supporter of the Heart & Stroke Foundation, so [contributing to that cause] is something I am definitely going to consider.” Edel will go on to compete in the Western Regional on May 2 at the University of Calgary. Should she win there, Edel will have the opportunity to challenge other graduate students across the country at the National competition, held via virtual platform, later that month.

Grad student touches lives through free portrait project Rachel Wood

A

University of Manitoba graduate student is providing free family portraits for Winnipeg families while simultaneously generating a greater understanding of the immigrant community in Winnipeg. Beibei Lu, a student in the faculty of kinesiology and recreation management, began the project in 2012 for Chinese newcomers and has seen it grow to attract families from the wider Winnipeg area. What originally began as a way for families to have free family photos taken for Christmas and Chinese New Years has now expanded to photos taken at many different Winnipeg venues, including Manitoba Start, a nonprofit organization that provides support to newcomers, and the St. Avila Elementary School. The university has also embraced Lu’s project and included it in the International Centre for Students’ International Week in February.

As an immigrant from China, Lu understands the value placed on family portraits. Lu fondly remembers photos taken with her family every year at Chinese New Years when relatives traveled home for the holiday. “For the immigrants’ community, they have made the decision to leave their home country [and] came here to have a new start. I felt a similar loneliness as them when I first got here, and a family portrait of my sweet family is what helped me most when this kind of moment came. I do believe being together is important for families [regardless of if ] they are immigrant families or Canadian families.” Upon arriving in Winnipeg, Lu became involved in many different communities and events. She joined UMSA, the GSA, the International Centre for Students, the English Language Centre and supported different

publications – including the Manitoban, the Gradzette, and the Manitoban Chinese Tribune. Lu credits her work within these organizations and her understanding of the importance of family portraits for the birth of the Free Family Portrait project. Throughout the project, Lu has been touched by the gratitude of the families and has had the opportunity to keep in touch with many of her portrait subjects. Since the event is free of charge, the families have a deep appreciation for the photos, said Lu. “Many of them thanked me many times afterward and even asked about the details of next year’s Free Family Portrait event. Some of them became friends with me. I regard this as a meaningful part of my personal life and it makes my volunteer work more effective by helping people.” For some participants, these family portraits are the first they have received since their arrival to Winnipeg, and it provides them a chance to send the photo home to relatives in their countries of origin. The ties within the Immigrant community are evident as Lu speaks of unknown connections between her and the families that sometimes surface during the photo shoots. These ties grow stronger as new friendships between Lu and her subjects continue through the years. “Some immigrant families that I interviewed earlier still keep in touch with me, so that I do notice their changes throughout these years. Someone got a new baby, someone got accepted to university, someone got reunited with their family members who were not here at the time I took their photo, and so on. I never noticed this kind of joy of sharing family stories until I started this project; tiny details in everyday life make for great [life-long] memories.” A family portrait with their biological relatives may not be a reality for some international students at the U of M, notes Lu. In those cases, their university family comes together for the portrait and these photos are often sent home to share their new life with their home community. Lu has had the opportunity to learn more about her subjects lives through the portraits. When the project began, she interviewed the

families and published their personal stories alongside the photos in the Manitoba Chinese Tribune. Lu believes that this contributes to a better understanding of newcomers. “New Canadians are becoming a big part of Canadian society nowadays. With my journalism background, I’m interested in the stories within these immigrant communities from different cultural backgrounds.” Support from organizations in Winnipeg has been key for the sustainability of this project. Manitoba Start, St. Avila School, the U of M, and

“I believe that each family has their special story, no matter if it’s an immigrant family or a Canadian family” — Beibei Lu the Mandarin radio show “Hello, Winnipeg” on FM 101.5 have all shown their support for the project by either hosting the portrait event or providing an avenue to promote it. The Free Family Portrait website features the phrase, “Every step of these families’ lives deserves to be respectfully remembered; sometimes a picture tells a lot.” Lu penned the phrase after listening to the stories of families coming to the events. “For immigrant families, their steps in searching for a better life may be unnoticeable in others’ eyes, but this meant a lot for them,” says Lu. “I believe that each family has their special story, no matter if it’s an immigrant family or a Canadian family. For the university community, the definition of ‘family’ will get a broader meaning. This project helped international students have their portrait done, so that they can share their new look in their university with their families back in their home countries.” More information on Lu’s Free Family Portrait project can be found at: freephotome.wordpress.com.

Neknomination, dangerous drinking game takes the Internet by storm Travis Fauteau — The Lance (University of Windsor) WINDSOR (CUP) — If you think Truth or Dare is bad, you have probably not heard of neknomination. Neknomination is the newest drinking trend and it is hitting university and college campuses just in time for reading week. The drinking competition varies, but essentially begins with one person posting a video via social media of him or herself drinking an excessive amount of alcohol and then nominating two other friends to do the same, perpetuating a cycle of drunkenness across the Internet. Neknomination, however, can vary from the simple “necking” of a bottle of beer to the necking of entire bottle of vodka. In one video, a participant skips the alcohol altogether and instead rides a horse into the local Tesco store to steal, and promptly drink, a bottle of pop. Some videos have over 100, 000 hits despite the novelty of the “game.” One of the more popular videos depicts a man drinking beer directly out of a toilet as he is held upside down. The “game,” however, has already proven to be lethal. In the last week, the neknomination craze has been blamed for the deaths of at least two men in the United Kingdom. Sandra Davis, University of Windsor residence life manager, said that there have already been multiple known cases of neknomination on campus. “It happened so quickly. I was only made aware of it last week and we started seeing it almost immediately,” said Davis. “It’s amazing how it just circulates so quickly through social media.” Davis said students living in residence who participate in neknomination will be disciplined if caught. “We consider it a violation of residence policy because we feel it promotes overconsumption,” said Davis. “Anything that promotes

overconsumption is a concern for us.” While peer pressure may be the reason for neknomination, Davis hopes that peers would report an incident if it got too out of hand, rather than attempt to cover it up. “To a certain degree I think some students are concerned as well,” said Davis. “If it were to escalate to the point where somebody was too enebriated… our concern is that the friend is not going to seek help.” St. Clair College student Chris Delgado said he has seen videos of friends participating on Facebook and that he believes peer-pressure is the source of the problem. “It’s stupid. It’s a nomination, right? So they’re doing their own thing and your job is to do one better,” said Delgado. I think they’re intoxicated while they do it, so they’re not thinking properly.” Heidi Lamb, student alcohol education coordinator at the University of Windsor, says that neknomination is an issue that must be addressed on campus in order to keep students safe. “People only see the two-minute video, but they don’t realize the long-term impact that it could have,” said Lamb. Lamb said that even if one disregards the physical effects of neknomination, the social and professional risks are considerable as well. “In our age, your Internet profile is evermore important. I don’t think that it will look good, in five or ten years, when an employer searches you on Google and finds not only that you’ve posted this online, but also that you’re peer pressuring your friends to do it,” said Lamb.

Mahin Delara — for GSA senator (independent) 1.Why are you interested in the position of GSA senator? When I was in my country, I was always asking myself how I could get more involved in the different academic settings. Before coming to Canada, I had a chance to visit some countries with different cultures— such as Italy, China, and India—where I got some notions about their successes in academic performance. But in order to better serve the students in the university, I needed to combine my outsider and insider perspectives toward them. Now I have found this position as a proper opportunity through which I can interact with university students and get a better knowledge of their needs. This need assessment is really an integral key in assisting them to accomplish their desires.

Jordyn Lerner - for HSGSA VP academic I am an MD/PhD student. My PhD is in the faculty of pharmacy. Studying benchtop and bedside gives me perspective in thesis-based and professional programs. I have experience with governance at all levels of the university. I’ve worked with HSGSA and Manitoba Medical Students Association. I’ve served on committees in the faculty of medicine, faculty of graduate studies, and the senate. One of my goals for the year is to develop the FGS workshops into more longitudinal sessions. Skills cannot be learned over a single lunch hour. Students need time to practice and develop what we learn. I’m very excited for the upcoming year!

Laura Romas - for HSGSA VP marketing and events I am a second year MSc student with the department of medical microbiology and the HIV research group at the J.C. Wilt Infectious Disease Research Centre. I have had plenty of experience with marketing and event planning during my undergrad at the University of Winnipeg, where I organized community outreach events as a project leader in the Let’s Talk Science program. As your new VP ME, I will be committed to engaging all of our graduate students by keeping you informed of the goings-on of the HSGSA, as well as organize events to help you socialize and network with your fellow HSGSA members.

Patricia Roche - for HSGSA VP St. Boniface Hi all, Trish here! I’ve been at the St. Boniface campus for years, as an undergraduate project student and now in the final year of my master’s degree. I’d like to spend this last year representing the wonderful crew of St. B students as VP St. Boniface for the HSGSA. I’ll work closely with the rest of the HSGSA executives to continue providing important services, and also those cheap (or free!) opportunities to let loose with your fellow grad students at HSC. Cheers!
