the faculty of graduate studies. What is your background in student politics and/or related activities?

Why are you interested in the position of vice-president academic (VPA)? With over seven years of graduate school experience after attending several teaching and research institutions around the world, I understand and could potentially address the major issues that impact both the personal and academic lives of the graduate student body. One of my greatest attributes comes from the fact that I am an international student. The University of Manitoba has a large community of international graduate students and I can relate. I can assist and represent them while they attend the University of Manitoba. On top of my scholarly achievements, my leadership experiences will serve the VPA position and student body as I liaise with graduate students and

I have been volunteering with numerous organizations around the world and I am currently serving as the public relations officer for the University of Manitoba’s Iranian Student Association. I was a volunteer for the fall 2014 orientation and a “campus buddy” for new students for several years at the U of M. My involvement with numerous student groups has provided me with the opportunity to learn how to deal with student-related matters. If elected, what do you wish to accomplish in the next year as VPA? If I am elected as a VPA, I will make sure graduate student’s issues are presented and discussed within the GSA council. In addition, I will use my voice as a VPA to support all graduate students and strive to create academic workshops/ instructional practices and events through the GSA, something that would hopefully assist students in obtaining strong academic supports. I would not entirely deviate from

the hard work the prior VPA’s has strived to accomplish. But I would express my own fresh ideas as the VPA to encourage growth of the position and strengthen the GSA as we strive to represent our graduate student body. Why should U of M graduate students vote for you? I have more than seven years of graduate school experience, five of which were completed at the U of M. I am a hard and honest worker who enjoys assisting others to achieve their goals. I will represent the graduate student body while promoting equity to all members and their opinions. Voting for me is voting for graduate students who wish to succeed in their endeavors.

During this past year I have participated in and initiated various tasks with a single objective of making sure the interests of graduates students and the UMGSA comes first in decision making. I have also ensured that our work was done in line with the bylaws of the association, while constantly working on areas of conflict within our policy manuals for better day-to-day operations of the association. for GSA vice-president marketing & events (GSAS) relationships and create opportunities for graduate students to get connected and get involved. I would love to further apply my knowledge and experiences to improve the UMGSA for graduate students. What is your background in student politics and/or related activities?

Why are you interested in the position of UMGSA VPME? The position of VPME presents both a challenge and an opportunity for me to apply my experience in marketing and event planning, which are my passions. Based on my experience developed from working with UMGSA, I believe that my background and involvement on and off campus would benefit the graduate students group through my service as VPME. First of all, I believe that marketing plays an increasingly important role for organizations in today’s society. A successful marketing strategy would benefit the organization as well as the group it serves for. As an advocate for graduate students and their concerns, I believe a stronger marketing would be meaningful both for a better connection to, and communication with, the student body and society.

I have been actively involved and contributing to the UMGSA as a member since I came to Canada. When I started my master’s studies at the U of M, I became involved as my department’s representative in 20112012, and participated in the internal development and review committee. I have also volunteered to help with multiple UMGSA events and activities since 2011. Since then, I have been actively involved at different levels of the UMGSA as well as other on campus and off campus organizations (e.g. Student Life, ICS, the Manitoban, the Gradzette, ELC, etc.), which provide a solid foundation of connections and networks for my work as UMGSA VPME. Last year working as VPME with the UMGSA, through organizing social events and helping with UMGSA branding, I learned to better understand advocating for student concerns through effective marketing strategies with the UMGSA executive team.

UMGSA VPME? With your support, I will expand on branding and marketing the UMGSA through effective on campus collaborations and an increase in the visual identity of the UMGSA. This will give the organization representing graduate students a stronger voice. I will also continue hosting creative social events where graduate students can get connected, exchange ideas and relax from their busy research life. Why should U of M graduate students vote for you? A vote for me and for my slate is a support for effective graduate student action. And my previous experience as VP Marketing and Events will help me better adapt to the work of creating better marketing plans and organizing UMGSA events. Over the last year I have made great efforts to enhance UMGSA marketing through visual identity plans, projects and great social events. Gagan Sidhu

for GSA senator (GSAS)

Why are you interested in the position of senator? I have always enjoyed being actively involved in student groups and student-led initiatives, and for this reason I am interested in being an executive member of the GSA. More specifically, I am running for the position of senator due to the flexibility that I see as being inherent to this position. In my official capacity as senator I would be able to represent graduate students during senate committee meetings but I would also have the time and resources to actively participate in other issues that the GSA is working on both externally and internally. Overall, I believe that I will be able to best address the issues affecting graduate students as senator.

Throughout my undergraduate years I volunteered with various student groups, and acted as a liaison between student groups and the charities they were involved with. Additionally, over the past eight years, I have been actively involved in event planning and fundraising for various charities and organizations, including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. These experiences have allowed me to develop a skill set that I believe would serve me well on the GSA executive. If elected, what do you wish to accomplish in the next year as GSA senator? My primary goal is to provide graduate students with the facts and information that are most relevant to their education by serving as a liaison between the graduate student community, the senate, and the UMGSA. I would also like to implement new ways to bring all graduate students together to create a stronger and more cohesive graduate community that is engaged in addressing student issues and supportive of its members.

their ability to engage with and communicate the scope and technical aspects of the research to the audience.

The big winner of the night was Rebecca (DeLong) Dielschneider, talking her way to first place and the people’s choice award for her thesis “Lysosomes as Targets in Leukemia.” Diego Rodriguez won second place for his presentation on “Using Radio Waves for Breast Cancer Detection.”

“It’s an event that captures not only the academic community but the broader Winnipeg community,” said Jay Doering, dean of the faculty of graduate studies. “it’s an opportunity for people to come out and be exposed to the leading edge research that’s being undertaken at the University of Manitoba.”

It would be tough to calculate the total number of research hours that went into the 3MT finalist’s 12 presentations. But in a total presentation time of less than 35 minutes, a packed audience at the Robert B. Schultz Theatre absorbed information on a wide array of research being conducted by U of M graduate students.

Among the other intriguing thesis topics presented at the finals were research into ways to repurpose industrial waste to create bio diesel, new methods for using MRIs to detect multiple sclerosis earlier and a look at potential medical breakthroughs found in local fungi, bacteria and slow-growing lichen.

Each 3MT challenger was faced with the task of condensing years of research and experiences into a concise three-minute presentation, with just one PowerPoint slide for visual aid. A panel of three non-expert judges critiqued the presentations on

Each of the 12 competitors had to first make it out of the heat stages that featured a total of 29 hopefuls. For coming in first place, Dielschneider won $5,000, and an additional $1,000 for being selected as people’s choice. Rodriguez was awarded

Deilschneider explained that by focusing on leukemia, she allowed herself to stay current in two of her broad academic interests — immunology and cancer biology — while working on research that could have a dramatic impact on many lives.

“This is by far the hardest thing I’ve done in grad school,” said Deilschneider.

“Science is just a great way to change people’s “The hardest thing to prepare for, and really the lives from behind the scenes, to really not really be at the forefront, but really drive progress, drive hardest thing to write and to do.” innovation, drive change.
