HELLO FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to the 5th issue of The Flood! For years I pored over art magazines in book shops, wishing I could live inside them. Thanks to all of the support I’ve encountered while in pursuit of this dream, I am 5 issues closer than I ever thought I could be! Thank you so much to all of the artists, photographers, designers, art school cronies, and wonderful pals of mine that have helped me to continue P HO TO B Y S A R A H HO F F M A N

cranking out these issues with beautiful new content every time for almost one entire year now. There is definitely no shortage of amazing talent in the world and I feel honored to have been able to come in contact with so many gifted people with unique ways of expressing their perspective. I think you will all be in unanimous agreement with me that life would be incredibly dull without art and other creative forms of personal expression. So, without further ado, on to issue number five! Let the visual adventure begin.

YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS ALL SEEM TO FEATURE WOMEN EITHER TAKING OVER OR BEING TAKEN OVER BY NATURAL FORCES. IS THERE A SPECIFIC MEANING TO THIS CONCEPT OR STORY THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CONVEY?

When it comes to speculative (sci fi, fantasy, etc.) fiction, I have the idea of a traditionally masculine story (where a hero masters the elements, saves the world, and everyone else exists to help or hinder him on this quest) as being different from a traditionally feminine story (where there are forces/people outside that are just as vivid as you, and there’s only so much you can do about it). I don’t know that it breaks down along gender lines per se, and it’s just a loose theory, but really, it’s about empowerment vs. disempowerment. And I’m really interested in how a disempowered person in a world beyond their control copes with it, how they escape or defeat it, or are defeated by it.” DISCOVER MORE @ OKCHICKADEE.COM

“I’M CONSTANTLY THINKING OF THE NEXT PICTURE, DRIFTING OFF WHEN I SHOULD BE LISTENING.” My girls have a particular look. I look at many different girls to put together their features. I love the tiny variations of eyebrows and also a strong nose and old fashioned hairstyles. The costumes they wear are always manipulations of things I own, and often their possessions were mine first. It’s all quite personal.

Art is just something I wanted to do from a young age, keeping notebooks filled with drawings since I was knee high. I’ve always had a love of art. My father had a great interest in the impressionists and would take me to see all sorts of wonderful places.” •

WHAT LED YOU TWO TO YOUR RESPECTIVE FIELDS IN THE FIRST PLACE? MARTYN: Well, being a long time music fanatic and avid clubber, I started putting on drum ‘n bass events in the mid ‘90s. This was followed by DJ-ing at my own nights and later on at other people’s events. Around 2004, I started making my own music, and that led to a string of 12”es and remixes, followed by my first album “Great Lengths” in 2009, a mix CD for fabric in 2010, and my new album “Ghost People” out in October.
