Friday, Aug. 7, 7 p.m. Kootenay Gallery of Art, 120 Heritage Way, Castlegar We experience grief after all forms of loss, that of a loved one, a home or a job. For local artist Maggie Shirley all three occurred within a very short time. She then faced the task of sorting and shredding personal documents belonging to both herself and her mother. The resulting strips of paper were fashioned into disks and cones of varying sizes and as the pieces began to take shape Maggie found that words and phrases would randomly appear that resonated with her situation and helped her deal with her grief. The resulting exhibition, Peacing: Sacred Circle of Life, also encourages the viewer to participate by writing a word or phrase on a strip of paper leaving a meaningful message throughout the Gallery for others to read. kootenaygallery.com

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Nostalgia Vision When it comes to many of our favourite things, from a critical standpoint, do we like them due to high quality or are we merely being blinded by nostalgia? This applies to many things, but I’m thinking of television specifically. Many of us have fond memories of cartoons from when we were younger, such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or even the Batman Animated Series. But, I saw an interesting video recently that proclaimed that newer animated television series were, in fact, better. It got me think-

ing of whether or not being a fan of these types of programs from when we were younger affects our judgment of them now. While I agree many of the newer shows have great writing and characters, there’s also a vast amount of animated shows that I would consider vastly inferior. I guess the best thing I can say is to try watching them now with a more critical eye. Some of them hold the test of time and are still very enjoyable -others not so much. Don’t be blinded by the past. Enjoy what is given to us in the here and now as well.
