Faeries abound in Shakepeare’s forest!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is happening this weekend in Nelsonʼs Capitol Theatre as part of the VIIth Annual Bard in the Bush Shakespeare Festival. Nelson Youth Theatre actors like Elle Horton (Titania, the Faerie Queen), Sylvia Hardy (Puck) and Luther Perry (Oberon, the Faerie King) play key roles in this classic romantic comedy. A Midsummer Nightʼs Dream was NYTʼs first play in 2009 and six years later Alexander George (Bottom) and James Tucker

(Theseus) are reprising the roles they played in that debut production. The all-ages cast has been rehearsing in the Civic Theatre since the new year to give audiences a fun, spirited version of Shake-speareʼs most-performed play. Songs, dances, projections, slapstick, sparkles and swordplay entertain even those audience members who feel as if the Bardʼs language is “all-Greek” to them. www.forstmedia.ca www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca

2015 Downtown Local Market

Transit and healthcare concerns

The West Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital District (WKBRHD )Board passed a motion to write a letter to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure about transit funding. The Provincial budget and BC Transit Budget Plan for 2015 through to 2018 will remain flat, and although there will be sufficient funding for base service levels in year one of the plan, there will be no provisions for expansion. The WKBRHD Board is concerned that this might result in decreased hours of operation. This is concerning to the Board, as regional transit has seen an increase in ridership over the past three years. Access to health care is of particular concern to the WKBRHD. Regular transit service plays a vital role in health care accessibility. The Board would like to see increased transit service which it believes would contribute to improved health care for photo by Jesse R. Woodward residents. Nelson Police Reports

domestic stand-off On Tuesday, June 2 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Nelson Police received a report of a suicidal male who had barricaded himself in his estranged girlfriend’s downtown residence. The former girlfriend had succeeded in escaping from the apartment so that she could alert police of the male’s intention to kill himself or be killed by police. Investigators determined that by being in company of the female victim, the 31 year-old male was in violation of a no contact order that had been issued subsequent to a domestic assault. Police located, contained and isolated the male in the woman’s apartment and a lockdown and a six-hour standoff and negotiation process ensued. The suspect repeatedly made verbal threats to kill himself either by self-mutilation, by jumping from a window or by having the police shoot him. The suspect was armed with several weapons including a large meat cleaver. During tense negotiations with the police, the suspect continually threw furniture around and eventually destroyed or damaged all of the apartment’s contents.

By means of exhaustive negotiations, police members ultimately made entry after the suspect had surrendered the meat cleaver and had partially cleared the front doorway, which had been heavily barricaded with furniture. As police began to enter the apartment the suspect suddenly decided to launch himself out of a window and police were very fortunate in being able to grab the man’s arms and upper torso, before he fell to the ground; eventually hauling him back into the dwelling. The suspect was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. Police are also recommending charges of Mischief over $5000 dollars, Failure to Comply with an Undertaking, and Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose. The Nelson Police Department would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the immediate and professional response and support rendered by the Nelson Fire and Rescue Services, the Nelson RCMP, the BC Ambulance Service, Nelson Hydro and the general public who were negatively affected during the span of this encounter. The suspect is currently in custody and awaiting a bail hearing.

woman refuses to leave business bathroom Members of the Nelson Police Department attended a local business on Friday May 29, at approximately 7 p.m., after staff had called police regarding a female that had locked herself in the bathroom for almost an hour and was refusing to leave. The 39 year-old female refused to open the door; however, police were able to open the door with a spare key. Upon police entry, the members observed the female ingest and inject drugs in the bathroom. The distraught female was holding a loaded syringe in her hand and refused to put it down. After repeated requests to drop the needle were ignored, members managed to remove it from her and she was safely taken into custody. After having concerns for her emotional well-being and recent drug ingestion, she was transported to the Kootenay Lake Hospital for treatment and a psychological assessment. Police are recommending charges of Mischief under $5000 and the accused is scheduled to attend Nelson Provincial Court on July 14, 2015. submitted by the Nelson Police Department

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Many people spend countless amounts of money to get the best education possible and yet, they may end up doing something they don’t love. When it comes to choosing a future path it can be as simple as following a few words or phrases. This type of thinking influences many of us, more

Words for Direction

than you think. Personally, it takes more then a few words to determine my life trajectory, but others feel that more simplified answers works for them. These can be as simple as “Never give up”, or “The early bird gets the worm”. Many people also can look at a quote from a famous philosopher or even an actor and find some direction from that.

When it comes to guidance someone like a career counselor is what I would prefer in these instances. The guidance provided by many of the phrases may be potent, but having someone who can help you achieve your goals makes all the difference. But if you can find direction through a simple phrase, have at it. Whatever works for you.

Opinion&Editorial Breaking Boards, Breaking Chains Earlier this year in Nelson, I had the pleasure of meeting members of a grassroots enterby Alex Atamanenko, MP prise called Justice at the Junction to discuss world slavery and other justice issues. One member of this group, Dean Siminoff, is the head instructor of the Kootenay Christian Martial Arts schools in our area and founder of Martial Arts For Justice. Thanks to Dean and others, their “Breaking Boards, Breaking Chains” campaign raised $16,000 in 2014, bringing awareness and support to the victims of slavery and oppression in third world countries. This year they are hoping to exceed those numbers. The demonstration of board breaking and traditional weapons at the Nelson Civic Theatre on April 18th, and the showing of the movie Karate Kid afterward, were a great step in

that direction, as was the Pete Seeger Memorial fundraiser on January 31st. Although the issue is not highly reported in Canadian media, some statistics that were brought to my attention leave little doubt that this is indeed a cause worth supporting. In Canada, according to the RCMP, between 800 and 1200 people are trafficked through the country annually, many for the purposes of prostitution and forced labour. Meanwhile, on the global stage, the number of people held in slavery has been put as high as 36 million. The penalties for human trafficking are seldom enforced. For example in India, slave owners are more likely to be hit by lightning than to go to jail. Events like “Breaking Boards, Breaking Chains” can make a big difference in the lives of many people both here at home and in the developing world. Martial Arts for Justice has partnered with the International Justice Mission (IJM), an NGO whose mandate includes protecting poor people from violence, ensuring crimes are prosecuted, and working to reha-

bilitate and support the survivors of slavery, abuse, and marginalization. I recently read a chilling account of the world of human trafficking written by the founder of IJM, Gary Haugen. A tremendous amount of effort is needed to end this despicable practice in the world. All funds raised from admission to demonstrations like the one on April 18th as well as donations received go directly to the International Justice Mission. Martial Arts for Justice and their affiliated group, Justice at the Junction, continue a great tradition of West Kootenay residents supporting important causes and making a difference. I am proud of the work that these great citizens are doing and I would encourage everyone to keep an eye out for future events in the area. As a student of Karate for the last forty years, I am happy that the martial arts potential to help humanity is being realized in this way and I offer the members of Martial Arts for Justice my full support and encouragement in their great endeavour.

Alex Atamanenko is the Member of Parliament for British Columbia Southern Interior (NDP)
