Nelson activist, environmentalist, and blogger, Diana van Eyk is launching her new book, In the Valley of Lost Souls. The book follows the stories of two middle aged people, newly homeless, and with no apparent options. Invited into a house that appears from the outside to be abandoned, they discover how some have adapted to living in the margins. As they tune in to the voice of Anima Mundi, the soul of our planet, they weave a path through the fabric of their community, exploring themes of pipelines, despair, loss, and recovery. www.balboapress.com

Volunteer, Ken collects water samples

Friends of Kootenay Lake are beginning their third and final year for their West Arm Water Quality Monitoring Program. The study will provide important baseline data for one of the highest populated portions of the lake and to encourage a broader and deeper understanding the lake’s ecosystem. In the first two years they captured 10,200 data points and provided one-on-one training with over 50 volunteers. They are also teaming up with the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee to monitor for zebra and quagga mussels. These aquatic invasive species are posing a threat to many of our freshwater systems in BC including Kootenay Lake. www.friendsofkootenaylake.ca

Death Midwifery Thursday, June 4, 6:30 p.m., the Nelson Royal Canadian Legion Just as birth midwives help us enter this world, death midwives help us leave it. And just as birth midwives reclaimed birth as a family-focused event and a sacred rite of passage, death midwives are doing the same for death. Join Sarah Kerr, PhD., a death midwife and celebrant, for an evening of storytelling, teaching, and conversation. She’ll speak about her own death midwifery practice, as well as about the growing social movement to offer holistic support to dying people and their families. Dying is a natural and normal part of life, but it’s a learned skill. In a death-denying culture, few of us learn how to navigate the soul journey that our own death, or the death of someone we love brings. Sarah’s work focuses on creating new family and community rituals that help us learn us to meet death with an open heart. http://soulpassages.ca www.nelsonhospice.org

Upgrade contract awarded

Upgrades to the RDCK’s Balfour and Kaslo waste transfer stations will soon commence as the RDCK awarded the contract to McNally Excavating of Nelson at last week’s Board meeting. Construction was scheduled to begin in May but the RDCK rejected all of the original tenders for being over the approved project budget. The RDCK worked with the engineering team to revise the project scope, reduce costs and retender the project, which has been planned since 2010. The total contract value for the tendered works is $963, 832. Construction closures are anticipated to occur from June 15th to July 28th at the Kaslo site and August 1st to October 2nd at the Balfour site. Recycling bins will still be available. www.rdck.ca

bicycle-vehicle accident On Thurday, May 21, at approximately 9:57 a.m., the Nelson Police received a call for service in the area of Vernon St and Hendryx St for a motor vehicle accident involving a cyclist and vehicle. A member of the Nelson RCMP witnessed the accident and was able to render assistance to the injured cyclist. The cyclist was transported by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries and the driver

of the vehicle was issued a violation ticket for making an unsafe turn. As the weather improves the Nelson Police would like to remind motorists to be mindful of cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcycles using the road. public alcohol consumption The Nelson Police Department received several calls for service in relation to persons consuming alcohol and drugs in public areas. The

Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that consuming alcohol in public is not permitted and those who choose to do so can face a fine of $230.00 under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act. In addition, being intoxicated in public is also not permitted and those found to be intoxicated in public could face a fine of $115.00 and/or arrest under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act. submitted by the Nelson Police Department

All-terrain vehicles produce an enormous amount of heat and their exhaust systems can easily ignite grass or brush. They should not be parked on grass or other areas where hot parts of the machine are close to combustible materials. These types of equipment can also cause fires by coming into contact with rocks or other spark-producing materials during normal operation. They should have spark arresters installed to prevent sparks escaping from the exhaust system.

The Wildfire Management Branch reminds the public that smoking materials, such as cigarette butts, should not be thrown out of vehicles but instead be extinguished in an interior ashtray. When in forested areas or grasslands, it is crucial to fully extinguish any such materials and dispose of them properly to help prevent human-caused wildfires. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, visit: http://www.bcwildfire.ca

Human-caused wildfire prevention Since April 1, 2015, the Wildfire Management Branch has responded to 39 wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre. Of those fires, 34 were humancaused and therefore preventable. These incidents serve as reminders for people to remain vigilant when riding recreational vehicles or operating farm, lawn and silviculture equipment (e.g. chainsaws and brush saws), particularly when there is a heightened wildfire risk. They must ensure that they have a plan in place to extinguish any fire that may occur.

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

One thing that has always puzzled me is that people still smoke. I’m not talking about the older generation or anything of that sort, but my generation and the ones that come after me. Why do people do it? Between 17 to 20 percent of Canadians still smoke. Much of this

Why Smoke?

can be attributed to the addictive nature of smoking. But why are people still starting? The effects of smoking are well known, so why do people feel the need to start a bad habit. I can get the older generation still being smokers, as it’s a very tough habit to quit, but I can’t wrap my head around why younger people smoke. Is it still a matter of popularity? That’s the

only argument I can think of. I can’t really ask people to quit; it’s not that simple. It’s a long arduous process that can be very easy to give up on. What I can do is encourage anyone who doesn’t smoke, to not smoke. It’s not a habit worth picking up and the laundry list of reasons why not, should be more then enough to convince you.

Fish Heads and Flowers Fish Heads: jailhouse fish-heads to the incompetent driver by our school You should not have a vehicle and should also lose your license awhile so you can sit walk and think about the fact that driving is not a right! it is a privilege! Sad part is you could have ran a child over and you had

a child in your vehicle that would have been scarred for life. Signed: concerned parents! Fish Heads: expect expectoration...but it still is gross in the public venue...please refrain Signed: spit-no-more
