Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26, 10 a.m. -5 p.m., Oxygen Art Centre 320 Vernon St (back alley entrance) Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present a workshop in the ancient art of marbling by Vancouver based artist Natalie Purschwitz. Dating back to 12th Century Japan, the ancient craft of marbling has amazed artists all around the world with its magical process of swirling inks, dyes and paints on a liquid surface to produce beautiful, organic patterns. For hundreds of years throughout Asia, the Mediterranean and across Europe, marbling has been used to create original artworks, endpages for books and colourful patterns for textiles. According to Purschwitz, there is a perfect balance between control and unpredictability in the process that is undeniably addictive. Register online: www.oxygenartcentre.org

Saturday, July 25, 7 p.m., Ravencourt B&B, 4615 Upper Passmore Rd. The Clinton Swanson Trio, consiting of saxophonist Clinton Swanson, with Doug Stephenson on acoustic bass and Steven Parish on drums, will be paying tribute to the legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins at this Slocan Valley house concert. The Ravencourt concerts continue to be a popular summer pastime, so you can expect a pretty full house will be in attendance. It’s recommended to come earlier and enjoy the ambience of Ravencourt before the music begins. Admission for these concerts (as always) is by donation with all proceeds going to the performers. It’s a windy drive down to this straw-bale B&B, but well worth the discovery. Refreshments will be available. For more information phone 250-226-7801. www.ravencourtbandb.com

Kootenay Rhythm Dragons paddle hard

Kootenay Rhythm Dragons (KRD) started the 2015 season in the A Division at the ATB Financial Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival. With Coach Puleng Pratt and steers Diane Tulloch the KRD team travelled to Lethbridge, Alberta June 26 – 28 with 18 strong paddlers. The KRD team finished 1st in their starting round with a time of 2.37.43 and did a repeat 1st place finish in their second round in a time of 2.40.53. This placed the team in the A Division semi finals. Competition was strong in the semis as they faced the young university/college teams ending with an outstanding third place finish. The young women acknowledged with great admiration the KRD team who ranged in age from 48 to 71. The third place finish placed KRD in the final A Consolation division against their friends and mentors the Kootenay Robusters. It was an exciting stroke for stroke race with the Robusters pulling ahead by less than 1/100th of a second. An amazing finish for the Kootenay teams and an amazing display of sportsmanship and camaraderie by all. www.kootenayrhythmdragons.ca

The City of Nelson has approved moving forward to the next stage of development on a district energy system that will use wood waste to heat buildings within the community. This next phase includes: -Proceeding with preliminary design, -Setting up memorandums of understanding with customers, -Setting up memorandums of understanding with fuel suppliers, -Securing financing, and -Applying for grant funding. The district energy system being proposed for Nelson would consist of a central heating plant, an underground piping system that would transport heated water to buildings within the community, and energy transfer stations at each building that would transfer the heat from the water to the facility. The central energy plant would have a biomass boiler that would use wood waste from the local area as a fuel source. This system would be for heat only and would not generate electricity. Currently, the majority of buildings within Nelson rely on natural gas as a heating fuel. Heat from the district energy system would displace natural gas and significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that arise from the burning of natural gas. This is a pivotal decision as the City of Nelson has progressed from discussing “whether or not” to build the system to “how to” build the system. In the fall of 2015, a public engagement session will be held to provide the community with more information and an opportunity for input into the project. Emergency 911 NPD - Non Emergency (250) 354-3926 RCMP- (250) 352-2156 Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477

Witnesses sought for Rosemont assault On Wednesday, July 8 at approximately 2 p.m., a 911 call was received regarding what was reported as a hit and run motor vehicle incident in the 1100 block of West Innes Street, Nelson. BC Ambulance, Nelson Fire and Rescue, Nelson RCMP and Nelson Police Department personnel responded to the event and an unconscious, heavily bleeding and severely injured 54 year old female was located in the middle of the roadway. Her 7 month old grandson was found nearby, unharmed, in a stroller.

Prior to the arrival of emergency services personnel, a 48 year old male had been transported from the scene to Kootenay Lake Hospital by a neighbor. The male had originally provided information to bystanders that both he and the female had been struck by a vehicle. Subsequent investigation determined that the 48 year old male had attacked the 54 year old female victim, who is an Alberta resident visiting Nelson. An edged weapon was used in the attack and severe injuries were inflicted on the female, who is

currently in a local hospital. It is believed that the assailant is not known by the victim, and that there had been no previous interaction between the male and the victim. The male is currently in police custody and the Nelson Police Department is working with Crown and Nelson Mental Health personnel on this matter. Any witnesses or persons with information are encouraged to contact the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919. submitted by the Nelson Police Department

Firefighting crews respond to 52 new fires Recent thunderstorms have kept BC Wildfire Service crews busy fighting dozens of new fires in the Southeast Fire Centre. Crews have responded to 52 new fires since Monday, 50 of which were caused by lightning. The Boundary region had 23 new wildfires. The largest covers 25 hectares and is located north of Midway and east of Ingram Creek. This fire is 100% contained and 30 firefighters and four pieces of heavy equipment are working on it today. Crews are also responding to multiple spot-sized fires (less than one hectare) in the Christina Lake area. While these fires are visible

from nearby communities, they are not threatening any structures at this time. Several other spot-sized fires are burning elsewhere in the Southeast Fire Centre. Most of these fires are located in remote areas and are not affecting nearby communities. The current fire danger rating is “high” in the Revelstoke, Boundary and Kaslo areas, “moderate” throughout the Kootenay Lake, Arrow and Boundary zones, and “moderate” to “low” in the majority of the Columbia, Invermere and Cranbrook fire zones. Protecting life and property are top priorities for the BC Wildfire Service. Members of the public can

help by staying out of areas where wildfires are burning and obeying any area restriction orders currently in effect, including the one for the Sitkum Creek wildfire: http://ow.ly/PUkkN To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, go to: http://www.bcwildfire.ca submitted by the Southeast Fire Centre

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Moving On

Have you ever struggled to quit something you weren’t particularly fond of? Making a major choice such as this is hard, but it’s a worthwhile one to make if you find yourself limited to where you are and want to do something you find far more intriguing. If you feel like quitting, let me encourage you. Your initial instinct would be to trust your gut, and this is not a bad way to go about, as your instincts have a tendency to be correct; but not mine, mine are terrible.

By making this choice you may aggravate people and that’s fine. With a decision as weighty as this you must go with what feels right. Of course you should weigh your options and have a discussion with friends and colleagues as well, to make the ultimate choice. I’ve been faced with many decisions as I’ve grown and many of them have been hard, but ultimately for the best. With any major change in your life, the choice made will have ramifications. Accept this, and choose wisely.
