Successful Burn out Operations on Sitkum Creek Wildfire The large column of smoke visible from Nelson and surrounding areas this afternoon is the result of successful burn out operations on the Sitkum Creek wildfire. The wildfire is located in very steep and dangerous terrain, Burn out operations are necessary to limit the potential growth and direction of the fire. The objective is to secure the south flank on Duhamel Creek drainage area. People can expect similar columns and fire activity to occur over

the next few days from more burn out operations. These operations remove fuel from the fire’s path and reduce the chance of the wildfire breaching the control line. The 530-hectare Sitkum Creek wildfire is 50% contained and has 79 firefighters, 18 support staff, seven helicopters and three pieces of heavy equipment continuing ongoing suppression efforts. The BC Wildfire Service’s top priorities are protecting life and property. The BC Wildfire Service is requesting

the public’s help in accomplishing these goals by urging members of the public to stay out of the area, and respect the area restriction order that is in effect. To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 6635555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, go to: http://www.bcwildfire.ca

Opinion&Editorial Fish Heads and Flowers

Fish heads to dog poop left on the sidewalk just 15 feet from the doggie bag dispenser and garbage can. We waited a long time to get dogs back on Baker even on an experimental basis. Don’t spoil it for the rest of us - pick up after your dog! Signed: no excuses Flowers to the local business owner who walked the 15 feet to the feet to the doggie bag dispenser and cleaned up the doggie mess. I happen to know that it wasn’t even in front of your business nor do you own a dog. Thanks for taking such care of our community. Signed: grateful
