Mt Dag Valhalla Park

Photographer Douglas Noblet spotted the elk last summer in Jasper Park. He was lying down, massive head arced gracefully, antlers illuminated in early morning sun. A few days later, in the nearby Tonquin Valley, he caught the setting sun on Thunderbolt Peak. These are two of the stunning images by Noblet that are on display at the Nelson Public Library until the end of August. Noblet was born in France and moved to Canada as a child, eventually settling in Nelson. He works as a professional ski patroller and volunteer search and rescue team member in addition to his ongoing quest for the next stunning image. www.wildairphoto.com nelson.bc.libraries.coop

The Nelson RCMP has recently received complaints regarding a new scam that appears to be plaguing the local area. Local residents are receiving calls from unknown person(s) perpetrating to be legal aid lawyers acting on behalf of a family member. The caller advises that their family member (generic: son, daughter, niece, and or nephew) is being held in custody and that bail money is required to ensure they are released. Amounts requested have ranged from 995.00 - 3000.00

The caller(s) express urgency and then direct the targeted victims to immediately wire the money using the services of Western Union. Police would like to warn local residents with respect to this scam. Do not wire any money and be sure to follow up with family and police. Tips for Protecting yourself: -never send money to anyone that you don’t know and trust -If you receive a phone call from someone you do not know, always ask for the name of the person you are

speaking to and who they represent. Verify this information by calling the company yourself -If you sent money through a wire service, contact the wire service immediately. If you act quickly, they may be able to stop the transfer. If you spot a scam or have been targeted by a scam contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or on the web at www.antifraudcentre.ca submitted by the Nelson RCMP

Duhamel and Sitkum Creek Residents of the Duhamel and Sitkum Creek area are still on evacuation alert as a 380-hectare wildfire continues to burn. The BC Wildfire Service reports that the fire is holding within retardant lines. The Service has 49 firefighters on the ground fighting the blaze as well as air support. People using Kootenay Lake for boating, swimming or other recreational activities are reminded to be aware of aircraft scooping water out of the lake. Currently, there is no immediate threat to structures. The primary objective of the BC Wildfire Service is to “contain the south and west flanks of the fire so it does not spread into local nearby residences.” Approximately 350 residences are in the affected area. The evacuation alert will be in effect until further notice. Such a measure alerts residents and

visitors within the impacted area to be prepared to evacuate if ordered to do so by emergency officials. If an evacuation order is issued, emergency personnel will alert impacted residents by visiting their homes. Notices will be posted in neighbourhoods. The alert will also be broadcast on local radio as well as on the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s (RDCK) Facebook page and website. The RDCK has created a new webpage dedicated to the Duhamel/Sitkum Creek wildfire. http://www.rdck.ca/EN/main/ services/emergency-management/ sitkum-creek-duhamel-wildfire.html

Harrogate in the East Kootenay A fire North of Highway 95, between Harrogate and Brisco is now 80% contained. At the east flank of the fire, in the Soles creek draw, the terrain is steep and inaccessible for crews to work due to safety concerns. That area is currently being monitored and supported by helicopter buckets. The current fire danger rating in the majority of the Southeast Fire Centre is “high,” with some pockets rated “extreme” near Midway, Grand Forks, Kaslo and Revelstoke. www.rdck.bc.ca www.bcwildfire.ca submitted by the Regional District of Central Kootenay and the BC Wildfire Service

Wildfires Update

Blueberry Creek On Saturday, July 4 the BC Wildfire Service is responded to a wildfire near Blueberry Creek, one kilometre west of Castlegar. This fire was highly vis-

Nelson Fire Rescue: Wildfire Preparation As most people are aware, there are a large number of wildfires occurring in the province of British Columbia at the moment. The Sitkum Creek fire is the closest one to the City of Nelson, but is not currently threatening any structures in the City limits or it’s infrastructure.

Nelson residents should be taking steps to ensure that their own property is cleaned up and fire safe as per the FireSmart Canada recommendations. In the event that there is aggressive fire behavior in the area there is the potential for flying brands to be blown into residential areas and start fires.

Preparing your yard to prevent the spread of fire is very important, especially with the abundant debris from the recent wind storm. The information to prepare your yard can be found at www.firesmartcanada.ca submitted by Nelson Fire Rescue

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

A New Ear

When it comes to listening to new music, it can be a daunting experience. You can stick to the same old sounds you have grown used to, but having a bit more experimentation when it comes to music can provide a far more invigorating experience. I listen to a large palette of different music from the grating sounds of noise rock to the more soothing sounds of jazz; nothing is too out there for me. If you are trying to push yourself to new sounds, then I would suggest a few websites for you. The Needle Drop is

a great start. He reviews music from a wide variety of genres, as well as makes comparisons to similar artists. I also read reviews at a site called Sputnik Music. It’s more text/community driven, as well as having reviews written by the staff. I listen to music that some people may consider to be just noise but I disagree with that. If you listen to it long enough you can get past the noise, and find the melodies and the elements that make you enjoy it. When it comes to new music, you just really need to give it a chance. www.theneedledrop.com www.sputnikmusic.com
