Wildland fire above Waldorf School Friday, June 26 at 3:44 p.m., the Nelson Fire Rescue Services responded to a report of a brush fire that was too large to be put out by the persons that discovered it. Both on duty members responded immediately with three additional members responding from home. Upon arrival of the first crew the fire was slowly moving on the forest

floor. The first arriving crew’s primary objective was contain the fire and keep it from spreading. Crews had to extend hose approximately three hundred feet up the hill into the bush to get to the area that was burning. The fire appears to have originated as a result of an unattended campfire and burned approximately one hundred square feet of forest cover.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. Nelson Fire Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be especially careful with hot objects in the interface area. Additionally, there is a ban on fires, fireworks, sky lanterns, and similar objects. submitted by Nelson Fire Rescue

Effective at noon Pacific Time on Friday, July 3, 2015, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. The campfire prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. This measure is in addition to

Category 2 and Category 3 open burning prohibitions that are already in effect. Specifically, prohibited activities include campfires, as defined in the wildfire regulation: http://bcwildfire.ca/Situation/ Glossary.htm#Campfire These prohibitions do not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane

or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, so long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. The use of a campfire apparatus that does not meet these specifications is prohibited. submitted by the Southeast Fire Centre

Nelson Hydro - storm related outage update The following locations remain out of service. Nelson Hydro continues to work on restoring service ASAP for these areas with in-house crews and 5 contractor crews.. They estimate that approximately 90-120 customers are still out in Grohman Community, Saboda Community,

Mt. Nelson, Portions of Green Rd (Queens Bay), Wharf Rd (Balfour), and Torin Rd. There are many homes that have sustained customer owned service entrance damage. They are already, or will be disconnected as Nelson Hydro comes upon them. These ser-

vices will need electrician repairs before re-connection. Customers should be aware that if their service entrance is damaged, they will need to have the damage repaired by qualified electricians before Nelson Hydro can restore service. submitted by Nelson Hydro

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

The Frailty of Modern Technology Recently, the TV that I just purchased last year gave out on me, so I bought a new one. The new TV I bought was defective. This got me thinking of how, despite all the advancements we have made in the field of technology; the quality of the product is beginning to suffer. We spend all this money on various forms of protection for our phones and tablets, when the companies responsible should make

a more durable product. I also find many of these additions ruin the overall aesthetic of the product. Maybe it’s because many of these devices have yearly iterations, with a few new bells and whistles, designed to drain you of every nickel and dime? We need to hold these companies responsible for the products they sell. If a company continues to peddle inferior products, we need to speak up.

Spencer Pollard is a young man living in Nelson BC with an interest in digital arts and writing. His ideas are of benefit to all of Nelson, and to stroke his abnormally large ego

Gratitude for extra community work

Dear Editor, Wow, I can’t express how amazed and grateful I am for all the work that city staff, other professionals, and many volunteers put in to clear Lakeside Park safely of debris after that horrendous storm. Such dedication for SURE is a mark of a healthy and giving community. Thank you on Canada Day. Sincerely. Sue Skidmore Nelson
