New sculptures arrive downtown

With Zodiac Totem, Pokey Park gives us not one of her whimsical, distinctive animal bronzes but five. Representing animals native to her American southwest milieu, the result is a sumptuous totem full of rich detail. Pokey Park was raised on the coastal bays of the American South in Georgia. It was here that she developed an appreciation and love for both animals and art – passions she has melded into a highly successful career as one of the United States best-known wildlife sculptors. Anchoring the totem is a frog on a lily pad with carp circling beneath it. The base represents both Pisces and Aquarius, the water signs essential to all life. Above is a desert rat, and then an ox, head down and balanced on front hoofs. Moving upward, we find the puma – paws clutching its haunches and long tail providing balance. Finally, the totem is topped with a curled rabbit, one long hind leg scratching its ear. The sculpture has been leased and will stand in the 400 block amenity area of Baker Street for the next year. Additional new sculptures are also appearing in the Nelson downtown core. submitted

Zaac Pick

With a reputation for compelling lyrics, haunting melodies, and an intimate live show, Zaac Pick has been earning fans and gaining acclaim since 2009 on the strength of two selfreleased EPs. His songs have been featured on television dramas One Tree Hill, Rookie Blue, and Saving Hope, while he has opened for the likes of The Civil Wars and Bahamas. The Vancouver-based singer-songwriter’s newest release Constellations, displays a breadth of sound that is distinct from his previous work. The cinematic folk songs on Constellations ebb with intimacy and augury, as tracks textured with lilting guitars, layered strings, and shimmering keys set the stage for a show not to be missed. www.zaacpick.com https://www.facebook.com/ events/1585361015042576/

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Time away from everything is great, well when you can get it. Getting away from work can be challenging, but I implore you to do so if you get the opportunity. It will give you time away that you can use to enjoy yourself. Now, many of us don’t use the

I Need a Vacation

opportunities, but we should. Regardless of how busy we get, having time away will also give you perspective in life and a muchneeded break. The only real issue I can think of is, depending on the duration of the break, you may forget what you have learned to an extent. This may not apply to the workplace as much, but if you’re

a student who’s been away from school for several months then it can be a bit challenging to be reacquainted with school. So, I implore you to escape for a brief period of time to reassess and to relax. Escape from the bindings of the work place and enjoy! It’s time you deserve and it’s a break you won’t regret.

TheSurvey

This Week’s Survey Question

Disposable income, pocket money, pin money, whatever you call the money that you don’t have to spend on food, shelter and basic needs what do you do with it? Travel? Learning? Entertainment? Donations?

What do you usually spend your disposable income on? https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/disposable_income

Watch for this week’s survey question in the Sat-Tues Minis. If you are not a subscriber to the Mini you can join our mailing list here. Not all results and comments from this special survey will be published, but you may notice some changes to the Express News Update as a result of what our readers say!

Last Week’s Survey Question

Do you believe that Mayors and Councilors of municipal governments should have a limit on number of terms in office? Just Mayors? Just City Councilors? Both?

Both Mayor and Councilor term limits 38%

Councilor term limits 6%

No term limits 56%

If you have a good Mayor or Councillor why would you prevent them from serving more terms. If someone does not meet expectations they can be voted out of office. I believe City Councilors need term limits, but I think 3 or 4 is more like it, not just 2, ‘cause it takes some time for them to really get the hang of it. I believe we would be doing the public a disservice by limiting terms. A lot of experience and knowledge is lost by forcing a term limit. Two terms. Also there should be a limit for Prime Ministers; two terms max. They already exist! Unhappy voters turf them!

three terms maximum if they are in too long they get smug and out of touch with their constituents - such as small town mayors. No, I don’t believe there should be a limited number of terms. Mayors are elected, and if the people want him or her, he or she should be able to stay. Moreover, it takes time to get things done. I hate to see heads of government forced out of office when they have great projects on the go.. It is inefficient. Ask the same question for RDCK directors Although, voter turnout is not what they ought to be, I believe it is best to leave the number of terms up to the VOTERS!
