Welcome to Wellington Gloria copley - Mayor of Wellington As newly elected Mayor of Wellington, it is my privilege and pleasure to write the foreword to this year’s excellent Town Guide. Once again produced by Richard Coupe, it is a mine of information, an invaluable handbook for residents and visitors alike. I am thrilled to have been elected Mayor of this lovely little town, where I have lived with my family for the past forty six years. During that time we have seen many changes. The town is expanding on all sides bringing more residents and more businesses. It is no longer a sleepy little West Country town, but a busy vibrant place that we can all be justly proud of. We have large factories, providing employment for hundreds of people, and their products are of international renown, exported and sold world wide. More companies are coming to the area with the increase in industrial sites, giving more work for those living here. There can be few towns the size of Wellington with so much to offer local people and those who are just visiting. Our position, within an hour’s drive of the coast; close to Exmoor, the Quantocks and the Blackdowns and surrounded by glorious countryside, make it a great place to live in. In addition we are close to the M5 and have a frequent bus service to our nearest big towns. The town has a fascinating past and is steeped in history, dating back to Saxon times. It is associated with famous historical figures, notably the Duke of Wellington, whose monument dominates the area, and Sir John Popham, Lord Chief Justice of England. Our splendid little museum is packed with information about the town over the centuries. Wellington has much to offer old and young. There are good primary and secondary schools and

opportunities for adult learning. We are fortunate to have so many green spaces, many of them with modern equipment for children to play on. We have a wonderful park that is an award winning Green Flag Heritage Park. We have concerts there on summer Sunday afternoons, as well as having a Party in the Park at the beginning of May, all organised by Friends of the Park. We also have our own nature reserve at Swains Lane and a community woodland. The Basins, an area given to the town by the Fox family, is a popular venue for walking and fishing. In summer the town looks beautiful, with brilliant flower beds and hanging baskets. The Wellington in Bloom Committee works tirelessly to help keep the town looking lovely. The town has a variety of clubs and societies, more than sixty in total. There are sports clubs covering rugby, football, cricket, tennis, squash and bowls, and our Sports Centre has a range of facilities, including a swimming pool. The Wellington Arts Association produces plays, musicals, concerts and an annual Pantomime. Many of their productions take place in our unique little Art Deco cinema. Wellington is an outward looking town, and through the Twinning Association we have links with three towns in Europe and regular exchanges take place. Next year we celebrate our fiftieth anniversary with Lillebonne in Normandy, our twenty fifth with Immenstadt in Bavaria and fifteenth with Torres Vedras in Portugal. The town has a variety of individual shops and a regular farmers’ market. We have a Food Town event every year and a street market in June. Another major event is our spectacular Carnival in September. In Wellington we have a lot of dedicated people doing voluntary work There is a strong sense of community here and nobody need be bored or lonely. It’s a super, friendly, little town and a delightful place in which to live. Best wishes

Mayoral Chain Outgoing Mayor Councillor Viviene Stock-Williams hands over the mayoral chain to new Mayor of Wellington Councillor Gloria Copley. The Mayoral Chain pictured here is made up of 26 silver chrysanthemum depicting the influence of Rowe’s Chrysanthemum farm to the prosperity of Wellington. Queen Victoria was so impressed with Rowe’s chrysanthemums that she ordered them to be delivered weekly to Buckingham Palace for display in her dining room. PA G E 8

It would appear that the chain was first made in 1963, as the first chrysanthemum is inscribed with the name of Mrs W.K. Barker. Did you know that Wellington appears in the Domesday Book and readers of previous Town Guides will be aware that one of the most powerful people from the 16th Century made his home in the town. For two hundred and fifty years Wellington’s major industry was one of the World’s leading producers of woollen and worsted cloth. However important King John, Sir John Popham and Fox Brothers were they are just a small part of Wellington’s past and much much more can be found by visiting the Wellington Museum and joining the Local History Society.

Local History Society – The Society, a registered charity, seeks to promote Wellington via its history to the town’s residents and visitors. To this end it organises a series of talks and walks throughout the year. The Society also runs Wellington Museum. You can learn more about, and contribute to the preservation and presentation of Wellington’s interesting past and everchanging present by joining the Society. The Museum – The Museum at “The Squirrel” in Fore St., has displays illustrating Wellington’s history – themes include the town’s industry, trade, social life and famous people . The model of the Wellesley cinema always attracts attention as does the 17th century money chest that was once used by Fox Brothers, woollen manufacturers. There is a reference library of more than 100 local history books and documents, a cabinet of documents and pictures on local topics and an oral history cd collection in which workers tell of life in local industries. Entry to the museum is free. Visitors to the museum will also find a range of Wellington souvenirs, leaflets and books on local topics for sale. A Brief History of Wellington – Despite being mentioned in the Domesday Book, and in some earlier documents, Wellington is essentially a modern town. There are few buildings older than the late 18th century.

Chairman: Judith Ward, Bolham Way, Clayhiddon, Devon EX15 3QB Tel: 01823 660620 for Curator: Colin Spackman, 8 Clifford Terrace, Wellington TA21 8PQ Tel: 01823 666702 Reg. Charity No. 801321

St. John’s parish church is the oldest building in town, parts dating from around 1200. The first prominent inhabitant was Sir John Popham who built a large mansion on what is now the football pitch sometime around 1592. Sir John rose to be Lord Chief Justice of England and took part in the trials of Guy Fawkes and Mary Queen of Scots. His house was destroyed in 1645 during a Civil War incident. Woollen manufacture became an established industry in the late 19th century, over 200 years ago. It started with the Weres and was later developed by the Fox family and by their rivals the Elworthys. Nowadays there is still a remnant of the industry with a much reduced Fox’s producing a high quality clothing fabric from their mill in Milverton Road. Wellington was brought to the attention of the wider world when, in 1809, Arthur Wellesley took the title Viscount Wellington. He was made Duke in 1814 and achieved his famous victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. Work on Wellington’s most prominent building, the Monument, began in 1817 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington following the Battle of Waterloo but it took over 35 years to build and didn’t reach its current height until 1892. The 1830s were a busy time for the town. In 1833 the Baptist Chapel in South Street and the Town Hall in the town centre were built. In the same year the gas works opened in Mantle Street. Four years later Wellington Academy, the forerunner of Wellington School was founded, and brickmaking began at Poole, now the recycling centre. In 1838 the Grand Western Canal reached Wellington, but within 5 years Wellington became part of the railway network when the Bristol & Exeter opened their station. By the first decade of the 20th century the town was reaching its current recognisable shape. Price’s (Relyon) and Gregory’s (Swallowfield) were well established and the Park opened in 1903. The principal leisure facilities appeared later in the century; Wellesley Cinema in 1937, Coram’s Lane Sports Centre in 1973, the Museum in 1983 and finally the Princess Royal Sports Centre, in the current century, in 2002. Wellington Young Person’s CENTRE Wellington Young Person’s Centre Mantle St Wellington TA21 8SW TEL: 01823 653 821 We have had a Youth centre in Mantle St since 1969. Originally funded and run by volunteers the youth centre has been a popular destination for young people from Wellington and beyond. In the 1980s the County Council began running the youth centre and young people continued to enjoy the opportunity to meet with friends and learn new skills. 5 years ago the building was refurbished and renamed ‘Wellington Young People’s Centre’ and many other support services for young people took up residence alongside the Youth Service. Today things are changing again. The County’s Community and Youth Service is being reduced and there have been doubts about the future of the Young People’s Centre. However, with Support from Court Fields Community School, Wellington Town Council, Wellington Rotary Clubs, Porter Dobson Solicitors, Somerset County Community and Youth Service and thoughtful and committed individuals from the community, the future is looking much brighter. Staff from the outgoing Youth Service have formed a Community Interest Company, Revive Youth CIC to deliver youth work and to safeguard this excellent provision. We have worked hard with our partners and the community to keep Wellington Young People’s centre open and working with young people.

Wellington Young People’s Centre is open; Tuesday and Thursday Evenings 7.00 – 9pm (term time). We offer a Café run by young people, garden projects, shelter building pond building, bonfires outside cooking, Art, a chill-out space, as well as advice information and support. Staff are trained in sexual health and substance misuse to ensure that the support that we give is of a consistently high quality. We offer 2 full days of one to one support, small group work and accredited opportunities to young people at Court Fields Community School. We offer a Wednesday lunch time session offering activities and a café. We are a busy and popular project with between 60 and 90 young people attending each of our evening sessions and similar numbers attending at lunch time. Because of the reduction in funding we need to organise ourselves in a different way. A charitable company is being formed with a view to setting up a new charity to run the building, raise money and help to guide the youth work. However, we still need more local support to succeed. We need people with organisational skills to support the work of the new charity and we need people with energy and enthusiasm to work with young people on regular sessions and to help with events. We also need financial support from individuals and businesses to help build on the huge support we have had locally. We are really grateful for the support that the town has shown and we will continue to run a project that we can all be proud of. If you have any questions or would like to offer support please contact: Ben, Lisa or Sophia on: 01823 653 821 07930 030 484 reviveyouth@aol.co.uk PA G E 1 7

Wellington Baptist Church

We’ve been in Wellington for over 300 years, but we’re bang up to date! We are a lively, outgoing, caring and exciting group (family) of Christians. Our worship style is broad in that we aim to keep the best of the old with the best of the new, and we do that through a lively, high quality, contemporary worship band as well as the traditional music of an organ. As well as usual 10.30am contemporary service every Sunday, we hold a twice monthly Early (9am) “traditional” Service, as well as occasional Café Style, Family, Healing and Youth Services. Our entire Worship Centre was renovated and updated in 2008 as the pews were removed and replaced with chairs, and the centre updated with the very latest electronic equipment; all of this creating a very beautiful place to worship God in. WBC has a huge exciting and fun work with children and young people – barely a day goes by without something happening on our church site for them, from the youngest Babies and Toddlers, through to our newly named children’s groups PA G E 1 8

(all to do with chocolates) to teenagers groups – Shout and Scream. In addition we are at the heart of the Wellington Street Pastor’s Initiative, hold an annual church weekend away, an annual Children’s Holiday Bible Club, run regular Alpha Courses, as well as weekly Study and Fellowship House Groups throughout the town and district, and have specific groups for women, and for men. WBC is a part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the UK Evangelical Alliance, and also of Churches Together in Wellington. We seek to work and partner together in common areas of mission and community life with other churches in the town. If you’d like to know more, why not visit our web site, or pop in to our Church Office for more information, or better still, come and gives us a try! King’s Church Wellington.

King’s Church is a lively, fun filled family church founded in 1982 by a group of passionate people who discovered the joy of having a relevant personal relationship with God. The home of King’s Church is The King’s Centre, a converted factory unit on the Blackdown

Business Park in the Centre of Wellington. King’s Church is a Registered Charity known as Inspire Hope Today and is committed to bringing positive change to our community. Our Kidz and Youth Activities are fun filled, ‘sometimes a little crazy’, but always convey the message that God’s plan for each of us is to help us become great people who can change the world around us by including Him in our every day lives. Whether you choose to come to a Sunday morning 10:30 a.m. Family Service, join in our Tuesday morning 10:00 a.m. Toddler Time, be part of our 6:00 p.m. Friday night Kidz or Youth Clubs or attend any of our other events, the aim of the church is always to create a platform where ordinary people, like us, can experience the love and acceptance of an extraordinary God in a fun, friendly atmosphere. We often eat together, either after church services with a Bring and Share lunch, before one of our evening courses or weekend events or at a Saturday Men’s monthly Breakfast. Summer BBQs, Picnics, Conferences or one of our Weekends Away provide great opportunities to get to know each other better and discover more about God in a relaxed atmosphere. We find that interacting socially helps break down barriers PA G E 1 9

We are a community based church, that has members from all christian traditions and none, and aim to make chrisitanity accessible to all. We meet on a Sunday morning at 10.30am for a time of celebration, which is varied, exciting, informal and relevant to all ages. Our coffee morning is on each Thursday at 10.30am when folks from ‘The Green’ come and chat over good coffee & food. We work closely with the other christian churches in the town to share God’s love with any we can reach. A number in our church are involved with Wellington Street Pastors, and we have strong links with our local Primary School. We have strong links also with churches and relief work in Southern Africa. Our community work includes helping with Besom projects (a national charity for the relief of hardship & suffering), and providing crisis boxes to the very needy as directed by the social care system. Society of Friends.

Lying behind the Friends Meeting House In Wellington High Street is a beautiful tranquil garden. It is the old Quaker burial ground, now no longer used for burials, that was developed as a Peace Garden by the Quakers, much helped by the Wellington in Bloom Committee. It is open to all from dawn to dusk and is approached through a passage way next to One Stop and through the gates at the side of the Quaker Meeting House. Bible Society (Wellington Branch)

Ever since its foundation in 1804, the Bible Society has sought to provide Bibles for people in their own language. The World has over 7000 different languages. 4000 languages still have no translation. Even when translations are available, many people in poorer countries cannot always afford them. Therefore, local branches raise funds. In 2008 Wellington raised £930 for Bibles in Ghana and £1400 in 2009 for Bibles in Nepal. In 2010 £750 has already been raised for Bibles in Vietnam. A Vietnam Evening will be held in September and 2011 marked the 400th Anniversary of the introduction of the King James Bible in all parish churches. For further information contact Secretary: David Brown (664843) The Songs of Praise will take place on Sunday 10th October at 6.30pm at Wellington Methodist Church.

Christian Care for One World (CCOW) is a local ecumenical group that was formed in 2007 to raise awareness in the area of Wellington and its surrounding villages, of Peace, Justice and the Integrity of Creation – that is, caring for each other and the world that we live in. The group meets in venues in the town periodically to discuss and plan ways of raising awareness for specific issues. It also initiates and takes part in activities that are aimed at raising awareness through engaging directly with the public and through campaigning. All people who have concern for the above issues are welcome at meetings whether they are members of any Church or of none at all. Details of meetings and activities can be obtained from the CCOW Convenor: David Dufour on 01823 666633.

wellington police Policing in THE COMMUNITY Well another year has passed and I have now been at Wellington for nearly 2 years. I am continuing to enjoy my role here and have been impressed by the support I receive from the Town councillors and local community. There has been a change to the staff at Wellington over the past few months when we said goodbye to PCSO Scott Windsor who has moved onto Taunton. He has now been replaced by PCSO Natasha Shattock. Natasha is very excited to have joined our team and relishes the challenges that lie ahead in her new role as the Wellington East PCSO. She is now getting to know her community and is, of course, supported by PCSO’s Pearl Hine and Steve Hill. We also welcomed PC Hooper at Wellington at the end of last year and already he has done some excellent work building the relationship with our colleagues in Devon & Cornwall. We are so close to the border here and sharing our knowledge and intelligence has led to some good cross border operations targeting rural crime. Our Special Constables have also been assisting with this and have done 3 or 4 proactive operations, again with Devon & Cornwall Specials, working to support this initiative. The Enquiry office opening hours still remain the same, opening on a Monday from 1200hrs until 2000hrs. I would however like to reiterate that the police station is staffed 24 hours a day and response officers and the beat teams work out of here during that time. The district of Somerset West has set out its policing ambitions for 2013-2014 to reflect the priorities of the newly appointed PCC. The main points for us to consider is an increase in the overall monthly satisfaction rates for victims of crime and anti-social behaviour. We are striving to maintain our excellent

detection rate of 43% of all crime and to reduce overall crime. One of the PCC’s priorities is to tackle domestic and sexual violence particularly violence towards women and children. This is something that we take very seriously and deal positively with offenders of this type of crime wherever possible. PC Mick Dunn has worked hard to target drug crime in Wellington and over the past year has arrested people who were cultivating and producing their own cannabis (a class B controlled drug). He has had some good results and thereby reducing the number of drug related offences in our area. I have worked with our colleagues at Taunton Deane Licensing to ensure that the licensed premises in Wellington are adhering to their conditions and that their trade is not having an impact on crime. We are monitoring closely the late night refreshment locations and any failures are being reported and acted upon. Recently we conducted some checks with Trading Standards and were pleased to report that none of the premises visited failed the checks, which was a welcome result. As always Anti-Social Behaviour is high on our list of priorities across the force and here at Wellington. We have been working closely with housing authorities and local councils to assist wherever necessary and appropriate. Please continue to ring us , either directly to the PCSO’s or beat team, use the 101 number or 999 in emergencies, if you experience any incident that we should know about. On a final note, last year I attended my first Wellington Carnival on duty. Having not experienced any of the Somerset Carnivals before, I was very surprised at the community spirit that was out in force. It was a great event for everyone, families came out in droves and it was a pleasure to be a part of it. It was inspiring to see the town come together in support of everyone that put a huge amount of work into making it a successful event. As with everything in life, changes and challenges are put in our way but once again I hope that my team and I rise to this and continue to make the residents of Wellington feel safe and be safe. TOWN TWINNING Wellington & District Twinning Association Wellington was first twinned with Lillebonne in Normandy in 1964. Lillebonne was already twinned with Immenstadt in Bavaria, and in 1984 we signed a twinning charter with Immenstadt, so linking the three towns together. The Duke of Wellington has historical links with Torres Vedras in Portugal, dating back to the Peninsula Wars, and we twinned with them in 1998. Twinning promotes friendship, understanding and cultural links between the three towns. Over the years thousands of young people have taken part in exchange visits to our twin towns and learnt something of their history and culture, as well as improving their language skills and having fun. As well as students’ visits, we have regular adult visits to and from all three towns. These are well supported, interesting and enjoyable and many people have formed lasting friendships over the years. Visits include trips to places of interest. From Lillebonne there are outings to places like Etretat, Deauville, Honfleur and Fecamp, or further away, to Rouen and Paris. In Portugal there are trips to places of historic interest, some lovely old towns,

and beautiful beaches. Immenstadt is in a wonderful part of Germany, with some glorious mountain scenery, lakes and rivers as well as towns like Augsburg, Lindau and Kempton. During the year the association has regular social events, which are important because they keep people in contact between visits. 2014 is the 50th and 30th Anniversaries of our twinning with Lillebonne and Immenstadt. Details of events will be published nearer the time.

FRIENDS OF WELLINGTON PARK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The “Friends” were established in 2001 at the behest of Taunton Deane Borough Council who were to receive Lottery funding for the refurbishment of our Edwardian Park. One of the major conditions for the grant was the establishment of an elected group of members of the public who were prepared to oversee and organise interests in the park. The “Friends of Wellington Park” was elected with a constitution, committee members and bank account. The public were asked to become members and they have been the backbone of the group since then, supporting events and paying annual subscriptions. There has been an annual May Day Event since the “Friends” were formed in 2001. They organise and present 12 weeks of musical entertainment every Sunday afternoon in the Park from June until the end of August. Music starts at 2.30 and finishes at 4.30 with a short interval. On many of the Sundays a tree trail is also available during the interval when the public can learn more about the special trees that are planted. Refreshments are available and also a small gazebo for the children to do colouring, read books and other

interests. Information leaflets are available and, of course, membership forms should you wish to join us. We could not provide a May Day Event without the membership subscriptions and this is a family day when all the charities benefit from support and the youth groups are seen doing a magnificent job in keeping the children entertained. The Executive Committee of the “Friends” is only a small group but even though membership is over 80 it needs to be even larger. Although we fundraise, it is necessary to support Council grants to the best of our ability. We are constantl;y upgrading our equipment, chairs, gazebos etc. to make sure that the public enjoy their visits on a Sunday afternoon. Membership is Single £5 – Couple/Joint £7.50 and Family £10 per annum. You will receive at least two newsletters a year and an invitation to our social events but mainly you will be supporting the preservation of your award winning Park, Green Flag and much coveted Heritage Award. WELLINGTON CARNIVAL

According to the Wellington Weekly of 1887 “this year has witnessed the revival of the Guy Fawkes celebrations. -in fact it is stated it is 27yrs since anything like the celebrations of Friday last was witnessed in Wellington” It goes on to outline the events of Friday 4th November 1887. “Friday being an early closing evening with shopkeepers and Saturday a late one. In accordance with instructions issued by the committee, those who intended to take part in the carnival assembled near Shute Leigh to form the procession” this was recorded as the chief feature of the evening. There were Masqueraders and torch bearers, lead by the town band, as the procession passed crowds of sightseers along the route. Details of individual entries are given and the procession ended with a lighted tar barrel as was the custom at several Carnivals of the day. Other barrels were burned followed by a discharge of fireworks and cannon, fires were also lit opposite the Eight Bells and at other areas in town but in each case the “bonfire boys” ensured no damage was caused to property. The events carried on into the late hours despite the RAIN. Although a carnival had not been held in the town for a long time, a carnival was planned for December 15th 1922 in aid of funds for the cottage hospital. It began with a shop window competition, and almost every shop in the town before the carnival were decorated to a very high standard, which made judging very difficult. The first prize went to Mr Ayliffes shop window (now the Co-Op in Fore Street); one of his windows was occupied by eight lady members of his staff dressed in Japanese dresses amidst flowering shrubs and sat down in Japanese fashion to a Japanese tea. The carnival itself began from Wellesley Park at 7pm. The procession consisted of 250 torch bearers, 16 tableaux in Class 1, 14 comic, many decorated motors and trade turn outs, large parties on foot, 50 pedestrians in fancy dress, decorated cycles, The Wellington Town Brand were in a large char-a-banc, and a number of jazz bands on foot. Altogether, the procession was about 3/4 of a mile long. After a twenty year gap the Carnival was restarted in 1950 but there was another gap when no carnival was PA G E 3 8

held between 1954-1960. From 1960 to 1970 it is believed the Town band took charge of organising and running the Carnival but in the spring of 1971 admitted it was too great an undertaking for them to continue. At this time another name came into save the day as John Nash and some fellow supporters took charge of events and helped advise Josephine Chave in later years. Mrs Chave has been involved in Wellington Carnival for 32 years; she as acted as marshal, catering , catering assistant and entertainments officer and is now President of the Committee. . In 1987 the carnival route was changed to omit North Street and Longforth Road. Although today’s carnival seems on the surface very similar to the carnival procession of yesteryear, the organisation is very different. The carnival held every September is organised by the Wellington Carnival Committee - they plan the carnival which will not only contain entrants from the town, but from other local towns who compete for cups and trophies. Each town on the circuit (South Somerset Federation consists of Wellington, Chard, Ilminster, and Taunton) has its turn playing host, and all monies made by each town is distributed to local charities and groups For entry forms or more information about being involved in the Carnival Committee contact: Chairperson ~ Dave Rylatt Email - chair@wellingtoncarnival.org.uk

association (see below) and there are many more guest artists and events during the year. Members enjoy an active social life and the opportunity to pursue and develop their interests and skills in all aspects of the arts: performing - acting, singing, dancing or music; visual arts - painting, craft work, set design and costume making; practical aspects – including administration, stage management, sound, lighting and special effects. The following are the different societies within the association.

Wellington Arts Association The WAA provides a varied prog ramme of arts and entertainment to the people of Wellington at the Arts Centre, the Wellesley Theatre or ‘on tour’ at other local venues. Regular events are staged by the societies which form part of the

Wellington Operatic Society The Operatic Society is active all year round, staging two regular productions each year. Each May they stage a musical at the Wellesley Theatre, as well as a cabaret show of their own devising each autumn at the Arts Centre.

In addition, the Operatic Society provide entertainment to other organisations and at other local events as part of their year round touring programme. The Wellington Pantomime Group In January 1975 the first Pantomime, Dick Whittington was staged at the Arts Centre. The group continued with an annual pantomime at the Arts Centre until 1978. The early shows had no real budget and funds were raised by a sponsored walk on the Quantocks - thank goodness things have changed! The first four pantomimes were played to full houses so in 1979 the group took the plunge and moved to the Wellesley Cinema. PA G E 3 9

The group also took part in a National Film Project in association with First Light Films, UK Film Council and Somerset Film and Video. These days the group aims to stage 2 or 3 performances each year. Members have the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of staging a production including performing, marketing, lighting, sound, make-up, costume and stage management through a variety of workshops. The group has a walking entry in the Wellington and Taunton Carnival each year to promote the shows they are about to stage and has won several carnival prizes. The group meet between 7pm and 9pm on every Wednesday evening during the school term time. Due

to popular demand, attendance is limited to 20, so please e-mail the group’s Secretary for information about joining the waiting list. genesis@w-a-a.co.uk The Civic Players The Civic Players is the drama wing of the Wellington Arts Association and have existed for over 60 years. In recent times they have concentrated on presenting light comedy and farce but are looking to extend the variety of productions that they are able to offer the local play-going public. With a small revamp of the profile of the group they are branding themselves as The Wellington Theatre Company and will look to provide more opportunities each year to be in, and watch, good quality popular plays in Wellington from all genres. Places to visit in Wellington Wellington Park is one of the most enjoyable attractions. Set on a compact site occupying just 4.5 acres it is within ten minutes easy walking distance from the town centre. The park is open daily from 8.00am to dusk. The park was a gift from the much respected Quaker Fox family to the town. The family were the town’s main employer for many years, providing jobs to over a thousand people in their textile manufacturing, wool and banking companies. Their aim was to provide a permanent recreation ground for the people of the town. Their offer of the park was made on the basis that the park was “under the constant supervision of a resident caretaker and shall not be used as a playground, or as a playing field, for older children and adults.” In 1902 Messrs Robert Veitch & Sons of Exeter began work on laying out the formal gardens to a design by F.W. Meyer, a renowned German landscape gardener. He included in his design a rock garden as part of the pond area which included 80 tons of limestone from Westleigh. Cement was not used as the colour of it would not have matched the limestone when it was wet. The floral bedding was designed to compliment and contrast with the rock garden and curving paths. Rhododendrons as well as Berberries, Savin Junipers and Holly Olives were added. In 1908 Plane trees were planted along the eastern side of the park to replace a line of mature Beech trees which were deemed too large and unsafe. The park has four entrances, three incorporated in the original layout; the fourth, which provides access close to the bandstand from the recreation field was a later addition. The caretaker’s cottage was built in a similar style to that chosen for the entrances. On the first floor, there was a gracefully curved window that would have allowed the caretaker a comprehensive view of the park. Wellington’s war memorial, a Cornish granite obelisk on a raised plinth, was unveiled in 1921. Situated close to the shelter, it bears the names of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Although much of the park’s original design survived throughout the 20th century, it suffered from general deterioration, lack of maintenance and the loss of some of its features, such as the ornamental fountain. It underwent a transformation at a cost of just over £400,000 and was officially reopened in October 2000. The original layout of the park was restored and buildings, including the bandstand, were restored and the fountain was re-created.. The tree canopy was thinned and the over-mature shrubberies rejuvenated. Park furniture was improved and gravel path surfaces reinstated. A new concealed water supply was installed in the rock garden, and the planting was restored in accordance with Meyer’s plans. The needs of disabled users were taken into account and lower borders now include scented or tactile plants for the enjoyment of visually impaired visitors. The bandstand remains in its original position, close to the western boundary of the park The original ornamental fountain has been replaced by one of similar design and memorial trees have been planted over the years to mark various events including George V’s coronation day. Wellington Basins In 1803 , Thomas Fox built two ponds to supply a water wheel based at Fox Brothers woollen mill at Tonedale. These ponds were called the basins and were fed by an intricate system of feeder streams, weirs and sluices. Although these ponds no longer serve any water wheel, the basins are a popular spot for anglers and are a pleasant spot for a walk or just to feed the ducks. You can find the basins at the end of Coram Lane by the Wellington Rugby Club. Wellington Monument is a 175 feet (53 m) high triangular tower located on the highest point of the Blackdown Hills, 3 km (1.9 miles) south of Wellington, Somerset, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. Wellington Monument, was erected to celebrate the Duke of

PA G E 4 2

Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo. The foundation stone was laid in 1817, on land belonging to the Duke, but the monument was not completed until after the Duke’s death in 1854. Its design was inspired by an Egyptian obelisk, but in the shape of the type of bayonet used by Wellington’s armies. It is 80 feet (24 m) wide at the base. A counterweight hangs inside to help balance the Monument in windy weather. An internal staircase ascends to a viewing platform although this is currently closed due to the need for structural work and the base is rurrounded by an open wire fence for the safety of visitors but does allow viewing. It is now owned by the National Trust, and is floodlit at night. Originally four cannon surrounded the Monument, but these were removed during the Second World War (1939-1945) and used for scrap to help the war effort. In 1985, the Wellington Rotary Club donated the cannon currently standing at the base of the Monument. In June 2009, the National Trust announced plans to reclad the monument at a cost of £4 million. Sir John Popham (1531–1607) was Speaker of the House of Commons, Attorney General and Lord Chief Justice of England. He was noted for his severity towards thieves and strict enforcement of the Penal Laws. Popham presided over the trial of the Jesuit, Robert Southwell, in 1595 and passed sentence of death by hanging, drawing and quartering. He also presided over the trials of Mary, Queen of Scots (1587), Sir Walter Raleigh (1603) and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes (1606). He sentenced Mary and Fawkes to death. While working as the messenger to the Queen, Popham was imprisoned by the Earl of Essex Popham replied that at his age, death would be “but cutting off a few years.” However, he was rescued Popham lived in Wellington and amongst his many charitable works included setting up a Trust to buiild and maintain almshouses for the poor. The Trust still survives. Sir John Popham died 10 Jun 1607 at Wellington, Somerset. According to local legend, Popham was killed by being thrown from his horse into Popham’s Pit, a deep local dell, dying horribly and descending to Hell. He is named on his wife’s grave stone in the nearby Wellington Church, but according to legend his body doesn’t lie there. Every New Year’s Eve his ghost is supposed to emerge from Popham’s Pit and take one cock’s step nearer to the grave. Until he has reached it, legend says that his soul will not rest in peace. His impressive memorial tomb can be seen in the St John the Baptist Parish Church is Wellington High Street. Wellesley Cinema Wellington’s Art Deco Wellesley Cinema, in Mantle Street, just five minutes walk from the Town Centre was built in 1937, in the traditional Art Deco style of that period. The auditorium seats 400 people on two levels and is run as an independent cinema. It has a striking Art Deco interior and is a must see for all visitors to the town. Wellington School Chapel Wellington is home to the prestigious public school that bears the town’s name. Founded in the 1840s the school has a range of excellent buildings reflecting the architecture of the last 150 years. The Chapel (1928-31) was built by C. H. Biddulph-Pinchard as a memorial to those masters and pupils killed in the Great War. It is built of irregular bond red brick with stone dressings. The richly decorated interior has carved wooden wall panels with elaborately decorated canopies made of moulded plaster, all painted and gilded, with the panels engraved with the names of old boys killed in the First World War. The galleried choir stalls and organ loft over entrance and canopied reredos are similarly decorated. The Chapel has a carved stone altar., carved bench ends and traceried stall fronts. The roof has a series of carved and moulded tie-beams on corbels, supporting a panelled roof with moulded ribs also painted and gilded. It is a Grade 2 list building. and can be visited during school holidays on application to the school office. Wellington School is 200 yards from the town centre in South Street.

business directory Welcome to this directory of local businesses. We have carried out a considerable amount of research to check the accuracy of the listing but cannot claim that the listings are exhaustive. No doubt there will be companies that we have missed, some that no longer exist or telephone numbers we have mis-keyed. If this is the case please let us know so that we can keep the database up to date and where possible we will post a correction in The Edge Directory and in the business directory on the Wellington Town Guide Online website: www.wellingtontownguide.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Graham Bayley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we

can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will,

do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Wellington, Rockwell Green, Langford Budville, Milverton and Wiveliscombe areas and Graham is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The

truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Graham a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Place a thermometer in the shade near the middle of your greenhouse W E L L and I N Gmonitor T O N the T O temperature W N G U I D at E different times during sunny and cloudy weather. Most plants thrive best around 15-21C. If the temperature regularly reaches 26C or higher, you will need to ventilate.

Don’t think it has to be huge and unsightly. There are so many styles available now, from the traditional cedar-framed variety to pretty bijou Victorian constructions. You could even go a bit sci-fi with a geodesic dome!

The simplest and cheapest way to ventilate is to open the door and roof vents in the morning and close them in the evening, but ventilation systems can be fitted which are automatically triggered as the temperature rises. Greenhouses do require some maintenance. If you already own one, then February is a good time to give it a clean. Disinfect the entire greenhouse-with a brush and a mixture of diluted bleach, keeping it away from the plants. Open up any vents to let the fumes out. Scrub down all the walls and floor, then rinse with clean water.

BOOK EARLY FOR EASTER

As well as providing the perfect environment to start off early seedlings, a greenhouse means you can extend your growing season for fruit and vegetables. Don’t limit yourself to tomatoes. If you choose your varieties carefully you can try strawberries, peppers, aubergines, peaches, nectarines and grapes.

Throughout the growing season spray the walls and corners with a hose set on the jet nozzle. This helps keep spider mites and whiteflies to a minimum.

Choosing the right site is important. Make sure that the ground is level. Your greenhouse should receive the maximum amount of winter sunlight
