Introducing The Kitchen Company The Kitchen Company is a Wellington based company established in 1995 by Anthony Ellis our Managing Director. Many local people will have seen our showroom in the High Street, Wellington and we also have a showroom in Paul Street, Taunton. What many people don’t know is that The Kitchen Company employs over thirty local people and some of these employees have worked for the business since it started. We have our own manufacturing plant at Rockwell Green, Wellington. Originally the Kitchen Company was based in Poole Wellington, but due to the need for expansion, in the year 2000 The Kitchen Company moved to its current location where we have over 14000 sq. Ft of factory space. We have continually moved with the times and invested in the latest machinery to produce a fantastic product. Based at our factory location are designers who process kitchens for independent kitchen studio’s and developers. We design, manufacture, transport and install kitchens across the whole of the South- West of England. Residents of Wellington have no doubt seen our naughty mascot, who gets up to all sorts of antics in the Wellington shop window. Anthony Coles the showroom manager is tasked with the responsibility of keeping her in check. Anthony joined the company last year and has many years’ experience in the kitchen industry. Denver Clarke is the showroom manager in our Taunton shop, he moved from the Wellington shop when our Taunton manager Charles Chalcroft retired. Denver has been with the company since 2004. We are extremely proud to have won the KBB National Award for Customer Service in 2016 following a visit from their mystery shopper who travels all over the country. Our shops have a wide range of displays ranging from traditional to retro and our designers will discuss your requirements and provide a free design. Should you choose to have a kitchen from us, your designer will see the project through to completion, offering a complete personal service. We have kitchens for all budgets and would welcome the opportunity to discuss your requirements over a cuppa.

Wellington Town Council has a vacancy in it’s Wellington South Ward. If the seat is contested a by-election will be held on Thursday 26th October. Allotment Competition Winners 2016/17 This summer the judges were wowed by the range of high quality plots at our Basins Site, with a great selection of produce being grown. Tenants have found plots therapeutic and enjoyable. Several plots were Highly Commended, including Wellington Children’s Centres’, Gordon Curran, Brian Smith and Andrew Gamlin. Best Managed went to, Daniel and Tessa Smith, Most Ecological was won by Ian & Helen Gillingham, Best Newcomer - Nadine Provenzano and the Best Cultivated - Mike Broom.

NEW Christmas Lights At the September meeting the Town Council agreed a new Christmas Light hire contract with a local firm from West Buckland. This would be a 3 year hire of some new lights as well as maintenance and storage. The previous Christmas Lights had been used since 2009 and required some repairs and updates. It was hoped that this would brighten up the town making it more festive for residents and visitors as well as supporting the traders. Note for your diary:

Holy Trinity Church a local history article by Colin Spackman In a previous article we looked at the conversion of an existing building, the original Popham Almshouse in Mantle Street, into a church. Now we look at another rare event – the demoltion of a church.The building involved was Wellington’s Holy Trinity church which once stood in Mantle Street, on the left as you leave Wellington just before the site of the current Medical Centre. In the mid 1820s the then vicar of St. John’s,William Proc24ktor Thomas thought it would be a a good idea to build another Church of England church at the other end of the town. He had a grand vision. He employed Richard Carver, a Taunton ecclesiatical architect to design a building - with three galleries - that would cater for a congregation of 750. The foundation stone was laid on 23 September 1828 by Sir Thomas Buckler Lethbridge (17781849) of Sandhill Park, Bishop’s Lydeard, who was a local Member of Parliament. When the first duke of Wellington was approached for a contribution to the cost of construction he declined. His reason was that the project appeared to be for the benefit of the local clergy, with which he had no argument, but he did not see why he should contribute to a project that was ostensibly for private gain. The building was consecrated on 6 April 1831 but it never had its own vicar; the incumbent of St. John’s did duty in both buildings. Apparently the pews were rather uncomfortable and were replaced during a restoration of the interior in 1893.The whole project never had much success and services ceased in 1936. However the building sprang into life again when, in 1938, it was used for a few months while St. John’s itself underwent a restoration. Holy Trinity was used for a time during the Second World War when it housed a Catholic school evacuated from the south east of England.. The church was demolished in November 1966. The site has not been developed and now functions as a community orchard managed by Transition Town Wellington. Although the building is no longer there its previous existence is recalled in the names of Trinity Row, opposite, which dates from the 19th century and Trinity Close from the 20th century. This latter, was built on the site of the once Trinity Farm which in its turn had been named for its proximity to the Holy Trinity Church. Dotcom Boom and Bust: Part Deux?
Article by Greg Sellers, Investment Manager, Hawksmoor Investment Management By the time you are reading this article, the UK launch date of the much-trumpeted Apple iPhone X, will be almost here. Apparently worthy of a dedicated slot on the BBC News, this part of technological history can be yours for a mere £999! The original iPhone was launched as recently as 2007 but had no third-party apps, no GPS and no video recording – a decade is a long time in technology. Technology’s advance has transformed financial markets too. In 1990, the technology sector accounted for approximately 7% of the S&P 500 Index (the US index measuring the performance of the largest 500 quoted US companies) but by 2016, it was over 20%. Even the Emerging Markets have not been immune to technology’s march – the IT sector now accounts for 25% of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index compared with less than 5% in 1997. Love it or loathe it, if you are an investor in shares, you probably have some exposure to this sector. This brings me to the central theme of this article – is the current weighting in technology in the world’s major indices symptomatic of a sector that is becoming too big for its boots and grossly over-valued or is it a reflection of the changing world economy? There have been many stock market routs over the centuries and two may still be fresh in the minds of many investors – the Great Financial Crash of 2008 and the dotcom boom and bust at the turn of the millennium. Let me remind you of the latter. Between the start of 1999 and March 2000, the Nasdaq index (a US index measuring the performance of over 3,000 companies, principally in the technology sector) climbed over 130% as the dotcom bubble inflated. It popped in spectacular fashion – the dotcom crash saw the Nasdaq collapse by nearly 80% in the following 30 months, collectively wiping trillions off the value of many of the technology ‘darlings’ and leaving investors with a nasty financial hangover. The Nasdaq then staggered drunkenly from its trough in 2002 but it was not until 2015 that it surpassed its previous 2000 peak, a period which saw the rise of social media and the rapid growth of smartphones. However, since 2009 to the present, the index is up nearly 400% and as it is hitting new highs as I write, some are rightly asking whether history is repeating itself.
Source: Factset, Allianz Technology Trust To quote the American-born British stock investor, businessman and philanthropist, Sir John Templeton, I am going to use the ‘four most expensive words in history’: “This time is different.” Perhaps I should qualify this statement – there are important differences to today’s valuations compared with those in the heady days of 1999. Technology shares are indeed expensive but not in comparison to the eye-popping levels then. In the last year of the millennium, any company with the ending ‘dotcom’ was given a sky-high valuation by the market; no-one worried about old world technicalities, such as profitability and cash flow. It was all jam tomorrow. Fast forward two decades and many technology companies are now producing healthy revenues, profits and cash flows for their shareholders. Witness the rise of the ‘FANG stocks’ – Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google. Their technologies are truly disruptive to the old world industrial order and, as the recent troubles of ‘Toys R Us‘ in the US demonstrate, few old economy models are immune to the technological revolution. During the dotcom bubble, the shares of the typical IT company were trading on 70 times expected annual earnings compared with the market average of 18. In other words, if you wanted a slice of the technology pie, you were expected to pay £70 for the privilege of owning a dotcom company generating earnings per each share of just £1 (assuming it was producing any earnings for its shareholders at all)! Hardly a bargain. Now, the average tech valuation is in line with the broader market at about 19 times its annual earnings, which, although certainly not cheap, is not as alarming as the valuations seen in the dotcom boom. Reassuringly, many technology companies are growing their earnings significantly each year, which is exactly what shareholders seek when investing in a company. Rather than focusing on the IT sector per se, perhaps investors should be questioning the valuation of the US market in general and that is worthy of another article in itself.

Spotlight on: Wellington Parish Church Wellington Parish Church – St John the Baptist, located directly opposite St John’s school has the mantra ‘All are Welcome in this place’. The church is open each day from 9:00 to 4:00 and many activities take place in the church or church hall throughout the week. The regular services on Sundays are at 8:00am and 9:45am. There is a service on Thursdays at 10:00am and Ignation Prayer on Fridays at 18:00pm. Once a month Smile meets after school, which is a fun time for primary school children and their parents/guardians. As the Parish Church, civic services and events take place throughout the year and there is a varied concert programme. A board inside the porch advertises all that is going on each week. As well as these opportunities to worship God and learn about the Christian life, numerous social events take place, such as monthly themed coffee mornings and soup lunches. Additionally, many of our church members are involved in activities out in the community. One special area of focus is support for pupils and families in St John’s School. For example church members go in to the school to listen to children read and at the other end of the age range a lot of work goes on in the local care and nursing homes with home communion being taken to residents, and residents being visited, taken for walks and so on. Do take some time to come into the church and have a look around – All are welcome

The late Victorian building was consecrated on 18th February 1890 on land given by Samuel Dobree. The prime benefactor was local industrialist Frederick Thomas Elworthy. The church features many fine stained glass windows. Services First Sunday in month - a simplified All-Age service of Holy Communion at 9:45am. Second, third and fourth Sundays in month - a traditional Anglo-Catholic Parish Eucharist at 9:45am. A mid-week said Eucharist is held on the third Thursday in month at 9:15am. Activities - new members are always welcome. Groups for young people. These are based at All Saints’ church Rockwell Green and Holy Cross, Sampford Arundel. Each month a youth group and a youth band meet, both to take part in services and to have fun exploring the Christian faith. Contact Helena Power on 01823 669135 Recycled Teenagers. A group of people aged 60+ who meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month in the Lang Room (behind the church) at 2:30pm for tea, a chat and plenty of laughter. We often have a guest to speak or entertain. Finger on the Pulse By Councillor Andrew Govier It’s that time of year when it feels that things start to get back to normal after the summer holidays. The weather has been very mixed this year but there have still been a number of excellent events. The concerts organised by the Friends of Wellington Park; the Proms in the Park; the flower show; the food fair; the Big Tent; Wacky Wednesdays and the Welly Boot Day were all extremely successful. Once again, I think we are really fortunate that so many people put so much time and effort into organising these for the enjoyment of others. Well done and thanks to all concerned! Last month I touched on some of the potential service reductions that could occur later this year as a result of central and local government cuts. Although there is going to be a consultation on some of these, there was shocking news last week when the county’s adult education provider, Somerset Skills and Learning, had 97% of its government funding cut without any warning. The service which has a centre based in Coram’s Lane in the town has provided an excellent variety of courses and employment training over the years. It would be a disaster if this funding decision is not reversed. The organisation is urging local residents to write to Rebecca Pow MP asking her to try to persuade her government to change their mind on this. Another issue of mounting concern is the future of Wellington Children’s Centre. In my last article, I mentioned that there was to be a review of children’s centres across the county. Although this review is supposed to start in the autumn, initially reports suggest that a number of centres will be closed. This strategy appears very misguided and will, in my opinion, put vulnerable children and families at risk. A number of years ago the current administration at County Hall decided to reduce a number of preventative services. This resulted in a large increase in the number of children being taken into care, producing worse outcomes for them and at far greater cost to the county. I fear that these proposals, if implemented, could have the same result. There are already worrying signs that the local service is being undermined with our excellent children’s centre staff being taken away from their vital work in the town. I am seeing the lead officers in this service later this month and I will be making a very strong case for the maintenance of our current service levels and facilities. I am aware that there is continued frustration about the traffic congestion in the town centre. There have been plans in place for a long time now to make changes to the Longforth Road/Waitrose. We were hoping that these were finally going to be implemented in the next couple of months. Unfortunately, we have now been told that these changes are going to be delayed even further. The County Council has received notification from the local gas company that there is a need for major works to replace the gas main from the Priory junction into the town. This will interfere with the proposed changes so this work needs to be completed first and the work cannot now happen until the new year. I have asked for a meeting with the gas company to try to ensure that the likely disruption of these major works is kept to a minimum. I started by mentioning the events that have taken place over the summer. We are now just about to have our annual carnival, always a highlight in the town’s calendar, and I would like to thank Dave Rylatt and all the other members of the carnival committee and volunteers who help to make this happen. I am aware that, once again this year, they will be selling their own merchandise to provide vital funds and I hope that local people will give generously to ensure the carnival continues on.

Autumn advice: Take care to save cash, reduce rubbish and not start fires
Watch out for wizz-bangs and wasteful ‘bargains’ By Nick Cater Autumn is always a busy season for families, from the frightful fun of Halloween to the bright lights excitement of Bonfire Night.
But it can also be a time of waste, whether it is the millions of pumpkins whose scooped-out contents do not get eaten or the costly impulse-purchase mistakes of the November’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday offline and online buying sprees. To get more out of All Hallows’ Eve than bills and a full rubbish bin, avoid shoddy and costly plastic products from supermarkets; instead, turn old clothes into bone chilling costumes, and then recycle them. And forget buying expensive sweets from shops by learning the smart saver’s trick of making your own treats. Use up that pumpkin and other leftovers for tasty snacks for Halloween or Bonfire Night by checking for recipes online, from savoury pumpkin fritters to the sweet delight of making pumpkin custard with pureed flesh and just eggs, sugar and cream. Anything not used food-wise, including the sagging once-scary pumpkin itself, can be added to your kerbside food waste container to be taken to make electricity and farm compost at Somerset’s anaerobic digestion plant. While November’s bonfires and fireworks are full of oooh and aaah for all – except our pets, who need to be kept away from wizz-bangs – caution and care are essential and not just on Guy Fawkes Night itself. Put the wrong items into your rubbish bin or black sacks, and fire could be the result even days later. If you are throwing away ash from fires or barbecues, always drench it or let it cool completely. Take the same care with the contents of ashtrays, which may have recently caused a potentially very serious fire that threatened to spread from a Somerset rubbish bin to a family’s home. Misfired or partly-spent fireworks must be soaked in a container of water overnight, until properly sodden, and the manufacturer or supplier should be contacted for guidance on disposal. Once your bonfire party has finished, soak fully-spent fireworks in water and then they can be disposed of in your general rubbish or taken to Wellington Recycling Centre to be put in the “cannot be recycled here” skip. While at Wellington Recycling Centre, do not forget that it has switched to being cash-free, as it now only takes certain credit, debit and charge cards for all payments. Long-term trials at Taunton and Chard were successfully rolled out to all 16 locations at the start of September. Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards,Visa Electron and Diner’s Club, including contactless, are all accepted, enhancing the sites’ efficiency, security and the safety of staff. The only exceptions are paying at the Reuse Shop within Taunton (Priorswood) Recycling Centre, and the £2 cash entry fees for Crewkerne and Dulverton community recycling sites. Card payments are taken at Wellington and all other recycling sites for chargedfor materials classified as non-household but brought in by residents: hardcore, soil, gas bottles and tyres. 52

And to help Somerset’s small enterprises and tradespeople, Wellington is one of 10 sites that accept and charge for a wide range of businesses’ commercial waste, while in a separate scheme, it is among 10 sites take residents’ paid-for vehicle parts for recycling or disposal. Plastic-only payments are also taken for “Revive” soil conditioner composted from Somerset’s garden waste and sold at £4 for a bag and £10 for three bags at Wellington Recycling Centre. The system for paying online in advance at the Somerset Waste Partnership website for domestic asbestos and plasterboard – neither of which are taken at Wellington – is staying unchanged. Wellington Recycling Centre is at the Poole Brickworks, Nynehead, TA21 9HW, and is open five days a week: Monday 8am-7pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday 8am-4pm; Sunday 8am-1pm. It is closed every Thursday and Friday, and on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The next nearest recycling centre is Taunton, which is open 8am-4pm seven days a week. Of course, November sees shops getting even more serious about selling us plenty for the coming festivities, with the Black Friday, on 24 November, swiftly followed by Cyber Monday. The main result of these American import events is another wave of waste that can – if not carefully handled by residents – jam rubbish bins, clog up already full recycling trucks, and cause kerbside collections to be delayed or missed. Far better to shop smarter so whatever you buy before Christmas is great value and will last, and do plan how to deal with the extra waste so you and your neighbours do not miss out on collections.

Ray Robinson has always enjoyed eating smoked foods and often visited a Smokehouse in Suffolk on family holidays. This nurtured the dream of one day owning his own smokehouse and eventually Ray achieved that dream with the opening of Robinsons Smokehouse in November 2015. Once a storage barn on the outskirts of West Buckland. Ray with the help of Ronni Buckley, who ran the Suffolk Smoke House of his childhood dreams, has painstakingly renovated the barn to become a traditional Smokehouse. Visitors are welcome to visit the Smokehouse to see how the process is carried out and to sample and purchase the produce. Ray appreciates good food and is passionate about producing excellent smoked food and therefore he takes considerable care when selecting suppliers who are all local. Ray said "we have selected only the best produce as we want to provide our customers with a premium product that they will enjoy. We use local oak logs rather than wood chips which is the traditional way of smoking and imparts greater flavour. In particualr we do not use additives and preservatives". Two types of smoking take place on-site, cold and hot. The cold smoking is used to ensure optimum flavour in the product, whether it is meat, fish or cheese. The hot smoking is then used on some products to ensure it is tasty, crisp and ready to eat. When pressed, Ray, said that his favourite product was the ham hocks. He said they were full of flavour, perfect to cook and delicious to eat. The retail outlet at Robinson's has been designed to display all the produce which is reasonably priced and perfect for that special meal or dinner party. Always shred documents which contain any personal information. 8. Always delete suspicious texts, often they may trick you into giving away personal and security information. 9.
