Deane Borough Council who were to receive Lottery funding for the refurbishment of our Edwardian Park. One of the major conditions for the grant was the establishment of an elected group of members of the public who were prepared to oversee and organise events in the park. The “Friends of Wellington Park” were elected with a constitution, committee members and bank account. The public were asked to become members and they have been the backbone of the group since then, supporting events and paying annual subscriptions.

There has been an annual May Day Event since the “Friends” were formed, and is a family day when all the charity stalls benefit from the public’s support and the youth groups are seen doing a magnificent job in assisting with the provision of fun for the children. They also organise and present 12 weeks of musical entertainment everyFriendly Sunday afternoon in the park from June until 30 July The Spirit String Quintet the end of August. own Council Newsletter ugust & September New Councillor for Wellington North

The 8 June 2017 was not just the date of the Parliamentary Election, it was also the date of a by-election for a vacancy on the Town Council. The vacancy was created following the death of the much respected Gloria Copley.

The by-election in Wellington North was won by Mark Lithgow.

Mark has lived in Wellington since 1985 and is married with 3 grown up children, who were all educated in Beech Grove Primary and Court Fields schools.

Mark’s main reason for wanting to become a town councillor, is to be a voice for the residents of Wellington, especially for the more vulnerable residents such as the young or elderly.

Mark hopes to help co-ordinate discussions between the groups of people that help them, such as the police or social services, to make the help more effective and to help keep the Wellington One Team sustainable.

He feels it is important to work collaboratively with the other councillors, regardless of their political party, to get the best for the people of Wellington.

As well as an interest in politics, Mark is a Samaritan and has been for many years. He is also the President of the Wellington St John Ambulance Adult division where he helps to promote the volunteers and celebrate their achievements. Mark is also a keen motorcyclist.

Grants Since our last newsletter the Council have been busy considering a large number of applications for grant. The Council have a limited grants budget and are not always able to help everyone that applies, however, the following grants were awarded:Skintight Samba Band £500 towards the cost of running workshops aimed at recruiting new members, advertising the workshops and providing new and replacement instruments.

Read Easy This is a new organisation in Wellington which aims to help adults who struggle to read improve their ability to do so. Its prime aim is to get adults with a reading age of five and take them to a reading age of about eleven. The organisation intends to work with Wellington One and other local organisations to identify adults that would benefit from this service. A grant of £1,500 was made.

Superact Superact is another locally based organisation that people might not be aware of. It aims to help people gain access to arts based projects and initiatives that deliver awareness, principally within the healthcare, education and criminal justice systems. £2,000 was awarded towards its Wellbeing Creative Sessions. (£1,000 was made available immediately and a further £1,000 made available in six months’ time subject to a satisfactory report to show that the aims of the project were being met).

St John’s Community Support Group £500 to help with the costs of running this new group which aims to support those suffering from social isolation.

Life Education Wessex Life Education Wessex provides health, well-being and drug prevention education to school children. A grant of £590 was made to help fund a project they are carrying out with Rockwell Green CE Primary School Wellington Silver Band Wellington Silver Band were given a grant of £750 towards the cost of its Proms in the Park event. Taunton Deane Borough Council, as owners of the Park, had introduced a fee £750 to hire the Park. The grant was made made to enable this event to continue this year.

Wellington Museum and Local History Society £750 to the Wellington Local History & Museum Society to subsidise the annual rent for the Museum.

Wellington in Bloom £1,200 towards the cost of its projects this year to enhance the town, removing flyposting, picking up litter and encouraging residential floral displays. They aimed to improve the town environment to attract business, benefit residents and attract visitors. This year their projects would include work with school and pre-schools, maintaining Lancer Court hanging baskets, supporting the Peace Garden and providing ongoing maintenance at Swains Lane Nature Reserve.

Wellington Carnival Committee A grant of £2,500 was made to the Wellington Carnival Committee. The grant would be used to contribute towards overall carnival costs.

Celebration of Light £300 towards funding the Celebration of Light 2017. This event had become a regular part of the local Christmas celebrations.

Wellington Community Centre A grant of £1,672 towards the overall cost of replacement front and rear arched windows in the main hall at the Community Centre.

The Big Tent £500 to Wellington and District Churches Together to go towards the cost of the 2017 Big Tent event Genesis Youth Theatre The Genesis Youth Theatre were awarded £750 towards the cost of equipment, “enrichment” days and specialist coaches.

Community Warden The firm of I D Verde now carry out the street cleansing contract on behalf of TDBC. Working in partnership with ID Verde, the Town Council now have the services of a Community Warden. He is Darren Beaman and he is available to us for 12.5 hours a week. His role, amongst other things, is to supplement the street cleaning service and react to any unforeseen problem that may arise. Hopefully this appointment will go a long way to helping the Council achieve its aim of improving the environment.

Wellington Monument - Beech Grove School At a recent Council meeting the Mayor welcomed pupils from Beech Grove School. The pupils had a strong interest in the Monument and its future. They had chosen this as their subject for Children’s Parliament and made a thought provoking presentation to the Council on how important this building was to them. They saw this as an opportunity to show how interested young people of Wellington could be in the town.

Annual Mayor Allowance This year’s Mayor Cllr Gary James opted to give away his £500 annual Mayoral Allowance to local organisations.

The five groups of his choice were Wellington Carnival Committee, Wellington Silver Band, Wellington Community Centre, 1st Wellington Scouts and WHERE. Representatives from these groups were each presented with a cheque for £100 in the Council Chamber.

Armed Forces Day Wellington Town Council once again supported for Armed Forces Day on 24th June with the laying of a poppy wreath at the town’s war memorial and the ashes of remembrance crosses scattered.

Members of the Royal British Legion Wellington branch also accompanied the Mayor.

Councillor James said “The Town Council wanted to formally express its gratitude and respect to the men and women who have served and currently are serving our country.

We also wish to recognise the hard work they have carried out.”

Wellington Youth Centre

At our recent meeting we were given an update on the current situation regarding Wellington Youth Centre. Unless immediate funding was found, the Centre would close permanently at the end of July. The local Rotary Club, which had played a significant part in originally establishing the Youth Centre, had also written to the Council requesting additional support. It had requested 3 year funding to secure a lease with Somerset County Council.

The Council felt that support for the Youth Centre would be a cost-effective investment in the future of the town. The youth centre played a vital role in supporting the town’s young people and helped to prevent anti-social behaviour and ill-health. In addition, it provided young people with the skills they needed to make the transition from education to employment. This would be a proper use of Council funds that would have a demonstrable effect.

Finger on the Pulse

By Councillor Andrew Govier Well quite a lot has happened since I last wrote an article for the Edge! On a personal level, I was delighted and honoured to have been re-elected to the County Council. I hope that I will be able to continue to ensure that Wellington and Rockwell Green get the resources that we need. At a national level, we have had a surprise General Election which ended with what was a surprising result.

It is clear that the country faces a number of huge challenges in the next few years and it is important that people work together constructively to meet these.

Before the local election, it wasn’t clear where the County Council was going to make the cuts to meet the on-going budget reductions imposed by central government. These have now started to emerge and there are concerns over the recent announcements about the future of the library and the children’s centre. Both will be subject to significant reviews and I will be making sure that our community’s voice is heard. In my opinion, it isn’t acceptable for the council to continue to reduce these important services. They need to be using their influence with central government to get a better funding settlement for Somerset.

The recent shock announcement of the closure of Teare’s newsagents has put considerable focus on the future of the town centre. We all know that shopping habits are changing but the fact that we are losing so many shops and banks is a major worry. One of Wellington’s strengths is the number of small independent shops that provide variety and quality but they rely on a thriving local economy to flourish. I know that the Town Council plans to discuss this matter at our next meeting and although there is a limit to what we can do, we will try to help where we can.

There was more positive news on the future of the youth centre in the last few months. The Town Council has agreed to fund the youth work provision at the centre for the next three years. This is vital as the funding that the voluntary group who run the centre group for the last five years has got was running very low. The centre provides excellent support for young people as they make the transition into adulthood. This financial injection will hopefully give the committee new impetus and enable it to develop new services to support and encourage the young people of the town.

One other issue that requires fresh impetus is the provision of the access road to Relyon. I know a number of local residents are frustrated that the road won’t be the full northern relief road linking down to Tonedale that was put forward by developers a number of years ago. Despite this I think that the proposed road linking into Relyon will take a large volume of HGVs and factory traffic out of the town centre. We are currently trying to arrange a meeting between the local councils, Relyon and the developers to investigate how we bring this plan to fruition. Hopefully this meeting will take place in the next month and we will have a clear way forward.

As always there has already been a host of wonderful events that have taken place in the town over the early summer, including the Street fair, Flower show, Wellistock, Proms in the Park, the Friends of the Park Sunday concerts. All of these events are well-established in our annual calendar and I would like to say a very big thank you to all the people who give their time and energy to put these events on. Long may they continue and thrive!

Ray Robinson has always enjoyed eating smoked foods and often visited a Smokehouse in Suffolk on family holidays. This nurtured the dream of one day owning his own smokehouse and eventually Ray achieved that dream with the opening of Robinsons Smokehouse in November 2015.

Once a storage barn on the outskirts of West Buckland. Ray with the help of Ronni Buckley, who ran the Suffolk Smoke House of his childhood dreams, has painstakingly renovated the barn to become a traditional Smokehouse.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Smokehouse to see how the process is carried out and to sample and purchase the produce.

Ray appreciates good food and is passionate about producing excellent smoked food and therefore he takes considerable care when selecting suppliers who are all local. Ray said "we have selected only the best produce as we want to provide our customers with a premium product that they will enjoy.

We use local oak logs rather than wood chips which is the traditional way of smoking and imparts greater flavour. In particualr we do not use additives and preservatives".

Two types of smoking take place on-site, cold and hot.

The cold smoking is used to ensure optimum flavour in the product, whether it is meat, fish or cheese. The hot smoking is then used on some products to ensure it is tasty, crisp and ready to eat.

When pressed, Ray, said that his favourite product was the ham hocks. He said they were full of flavour, perfect to cook and delicious to eat.

Are Our Feet Getting Bigger?

As a reflexologist, feet play a big role in my work life and also my personal life. Feet fascinate me and I am always finding myself observing feet where ever I am.

I encounter feet in all shapes, sizes and colours.

A large portion of people I see dislike their feet; my perspective is generally different from theirs.

To me, there is beauty in all feet.

I was with friends recently admiring their 13 years old son’s trainers. We got on to talking about the size of his feet (size 7) and those of his peers, which went up to size 12. This got me thinking about the size of our feet and whether or not they are now bigger than they used to be.

Feet are one of the hardest working parts of the body and they tell a story about our lifestyle and health. By looking at and touching the feet, the eyes and hands of a trained reflexologist can pick up subtle clues that help us determine which points to work on the feet to achieve relaxation within the body, and when the body is relaxed it heals itself better.

After some online research I found a few articles on this very topic. The College of Podiatry states “feet are getting bigger (up 2 shoe sizes since 1970s). The average shoe size for women is size 6, up from size 4, and the average shoe size for men is 10, up from size 8.

According to The College of Podiatry: The foot is one of the body’s most intricate ‘machines’, with 26 bones The average person uses their feet to walk 150,000 miles in a lifetime; that’s the equivalent of walking around the world 5 times 60% of people have one foot larger than the other Feet can flatten out as we age and get heavier 1 in 5 women are embarrassed by their feet Footwear is the biggest cause of foot problems in the UK

There is no conclusive evidence, but there are a few theories:

The average woman owns 17 pairs of shoes The average man owns 9 pairs of shoes

nutritional changes, we are eating better therefore growing taller with larger feet

People are nearly twice as likely to buy shoes too small (44%) as too big (24%)

children are eating more and producing more growth hormone, making them grow

The best heel height for everyday wear is 3cm or less

we now eat more processed food making us heavier and taller, and our feet bigger

Feet have 250,000 sweat glands and the average pair of feet gives off an egg cup of sweat per day

larger feet are due to the rise of obesity, extra body weight causes the arches of the feet to drop resulting in flatter, longer feet wearing more casual, less supportive shoes like flip-flops is making our feet flatter and longer

A GOOD READ - Poppy’s Seed by Bethany Askew Local Somerset Author, Bethany Askew, has just released her new novel “Poppy’s Seed” which is now available on Amazon, both as a paperback and in digital format.

Bethany, who has recently retired as a Dispensing Optician, latterly in Taunton, now has the time to pursue her lifetime ambition to be a published author. She has written five novels: The Time Before, The World Within, Out of Step, Counting the Days and now Poppy’s Seed, plus a short story and writes poetry.

Poppy’s Seed is a contemporary novel that explores the changing dynamics of relationships at different points in life. It is a very readable book that flows easily and Bethany’s gentle style draws the reader in and the racy elements are believable and add to the story rather than just being there to titilate While I generally expect relationship books to be aimed at the female market, the twists and turns of Poppy’s Seed and the unexpected ending make it very readable for all genders and ages. I certainly feel that many newly retired couples will recognise themselves in the main characters, real people with normal problems, strengths and weaknesses who make mistakes as we all do.

The story centres around Emily and Peter Stanchester who retire to Lyme Regis and both struggle to adapt to their new life. Peter misses his Talking to The Edge, Bethany routine and the feeling of being important and useful; Emily misses her freedom and her explained the inspiration for her latest novel: friends at work. Popham Almshouse / Catholic Church

by Colin Spackman Several older buildings in Wellington have changed their use to meet the changing nature of the town’s social and industrial life. Northside in South Street, once a clothing warehouse, is now part of Wellington School; Swallowfield in Station Road, once a private house. is now part of the Swallowfield factory and the Old Town Hall, with its multiple uses since 1833, is now a pub / restaurant. We can add to this list another building with a distinctly different origin - the Catholic Church of St. John Fisher in Mantle Street.

This nearly 200-year-old building has its origins in the story of Sir John Popham c1531-1607, born in Huntworth near Bridgwater, who became Lord Chief Justice of England in 1592. But more significantly for our town he lived here towards the end of his life and had a large house built on what is now the Playing Field. In his will he left money for the erection of an almshouse in Wellington to house six poor men and six poor women of the town. He also left a trust fund to generate income for the upkeep of the building.

As a result a two-storey almshouse was built in Mantle Street around 1608. However this original building, possibly made of wood, was rebuilt in stone in 1833 - with vaguely ecclesiastical features – see the picture. Wellington Museum has on display a copy of the architects plan for the 1833 rebuild which shows the restricted nature of the accommodation.

The Popham charity continued doing its good and necessary work for another hundred years or so until in the 1930s the facilities were thought not to be good or sanitary enough, and as the charity had sufficient finances, it decided to erect new, purpose built, flats in Victoria Street.

The residents transferred to their new accommodation in 1834..This left the building in Mantle Street available for another purpose.

Fortunately the building was not demolished, but was bought by the Catholic Church and converted into a place of worship – being the first permanent location for that branch of Christianity in a town with a strong Nonconformist tradition. Conversion to a church meant that the interior was gutted but the general appearance of the building was retained. The first service in the new church took place in 1940. In the 1960s the distinctive chimneys were removed.This then is another building that adds interest to Wellington’s street scene both with its unusual history and with its unusual, but somehow appropriate, appearance for a church.

Being green does not have to be lean Article by Greg Sellers, Investment Manager, Hawksmoor Investment Management The world of finance has a rather tarnished reputation thanks to numerous scandals in recent times such as the banking crisis, PPI mis-selling and the recent news that banks were manipulating interest rates during the Credit Crunch. However, to tar the whole sector with the same brush is unfair in my opinion and the surge in ethical investing is an example of how investing (and, dare I say, capitalism?) can make a change for the better. Ethical investment is growing; according to a recent study by EIRIS (the Ethical Investment Research Service – now rebranded Vigeo Eiris) the European SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) funds collectively managed almost €158bn (£133bn) in 2016, an increase of 16% on the previous year. The four largest ethical markets in Europe are France, UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands, accounting for 68% of the total. There is still a long way to go – ethical funds only account for 2% of the overall assets under management in retail funds but the market has grown rapidly since the first UK ethical fund launched in 1984.

There is a lexicon of green jargon. For example, SRI – Sustainable or Socially Responsible Investment, ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance and CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility. The terms are rather woolly and are often interpreted in different ways. For example, SRI is an investment process that takes account of ESG. However, in terms of ethical investing, the process boils down to two simple strategies – positive and negative screening. The latter is easier to explain. It is the exclusion of certain companies from a portfolio based on an individual’s ethical wishes. Common exclusions are companies involved in armaments, tobacco or gambling to name a few. The former is more intricate – essentially, rather than necessarily excluding a company as per negative screening, this approach looks at companies that set positive examples in areas such as environmental protection, conservation and recycling and good employment practices. It explains why ethical investing can sometimes be perplexing and complex.

Some ethical investors may well raise an eyebrow at oil giant Royal Dutch Shell being included in the ethical FTSE4Good UK Index (the company nonetheless meets the FTSE’s ESG requirements).

Would you buy a company supplying bottled water to areas without drinking water? Maybe, if you felt that this was for the good of humanity. However, from an environmental standpoint you may baulk at investing in such a company in the knowledge that it may take up to 7 litres of water to produce the 1 litre of bottled water. If you exclude tobacco from your portfolio, this obviously rules out a company such as British American Tobacco but would you go as far as excluding a supermarket that sells tobacco, even if this only accounts for a fraction of its revenues? Of course, ethical investing raises some complex issues and it is very much a personalised approach. It also often involves a good degree of compromise or there is a danger that your investments lack diversification or carry too much risk.

A criticism levied at taking an ethical approach is that the investor has to sacrifice potential returns by excluding some of the ‘sin stocks’. Whilst this can be the case (and there are numerous ethical funds with woeful performance records), it does not have to be that way. At Hawksmoor, we carefully screen funds and investments using our standard proprietary approach but then apply an ethical screen (depending on the wishes of the client). Fortunately, there are plenty of funds available with an ethical approach that make the grade. Whilst past performance is not a perfect guide, the F&C Responsible Global Equity Fund (launched in late 2012) serves as an example of how ethical investing can also prove rewarding over the long term. This fund has successfully employed a comprehensive negative screening process and, as the chart shows, it has outperformed its peer group turning £1,000 into just over £2,100 compared with the sector average of £1,900. Being green does not have to be lean!

This year also saw the 10th anniversary for therapist Amy Sipthorpe who joined Naomi as a student and progressed through the ranks to be deputy manager before becoming an established partner in the business and working together, they provide Wellington with a first class beauty service, offering the most comprehensive treatment menu available in the locality.

There have been many changes over the years but one thing has remained the same, the warm and friendly welcome that meets you as you arrive weather you are a regular customer or a new visitor.

Standards have always been high and the success of the business even in difficult economic times is due in no small part to the professional approach and attitude to our clients and the treatments we provide.

The power and the worry

By Nick Cater who is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Could batteries from Wellington or the warm embers of a Rockwell Green barbecue, cause a fire that puts someone’s family, their business or the waste services system at risk?

After a number of waste-related incidents in recent years, including a Somerset landfill fire only a few weeks ago, and even blaze deaths elsewhere in the UK, it is vital to take care of the waste you create and know how to prevent a conflagration.

Batteries are a prime worry. All need care as they hold the potential to “short” or create sparks, but there are particular concerns about the many li-ion - lithium-ion - batteries used in all our mobile phones, cameras and other portable devices with high power demands.

The power they hold, and their very light construction, makes them potentially dangerous if not handled correctly. If discarded into rubbish bins or black sacks, there is the risk of them being bent, broken or pierced, which could even cause an explosion, setting off a fire.

And once crushed in a rubbish truck and added to a landfill site, where decaying organic matter can cause rising temperatures, the potential for starting a blaze that may take days to extinguish is high. Of course, the potent and poisonous chemical cocktail in batteries is another strong reason to never let them go to landfill.

Batteries are just one of several fire hazards with waste, so please never add these danger items to your rubbish: • Household or vehicle batteries that may short out, cause sparks or catch fire.

• Hot ash or part-burned materials from domestic or garden fires or barbecues.

• Used portable barbeques whose charcoal may not be completely cold.

• Broken glass, which could act as a magnifying lens if not carefully wrapped or bagged.

• Aerosols, as they may get hot or be pierced or crushed during the collection and landfill process.

The advice is simple in each case: Take household batteries to recycling sites or high street stores that collect them.

• Recycle vehicle batteries through any one of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites, including Wellington (Poole), which is open Mondays 8am-7pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 8am-4pm; and Sundays 8am-1pm.

• Let ash and portable barbecues completely cool, or fully damp them down with water.

• Carefully wrap and bag broken glass, which should never go in recycling boxes.

• Use up aerosols completely, do not squash, discard the caps and tops, and then add to your recycling boxes.

Batteries are some of the easiest items to pass on for recycling. While household batteries are not yet collected at the kerbside, they are taken at Wellington Recycling Centre and 15 other recycling sites, and almost every supermarket has a container for them, as do many other shops, such as outlets for DIY and electrical items.

One neat way to collect batteries is to make a “battery box” out of an empty and dry small plastic milk bottle. Leave the top on and cut a hole in the side away from the handle, add batteries as they become spent, and then take them with you when next going to a recycling site or supermarket.

Of course, single-use batteries are a very costly and inefficient way to power many devices. Far better is to work them off the mains or, if portability is essential, rechargeable batteries are an excellent investment, saving money, resources and time.

Meanwhile, Somerset’s vehicle permits scheme has proved so successful that councillors have, after carefully listening to the views of users, decided to relax it to allow vans, pick-ups and car-towed trailers access with permits whenever recycling sites are open.

Don’t discard: batteries must be recycled not thrown into your rubbish bin

Established last year, the scheme allowed permit vehicles to use open recycling sites at any time on weekdays but only 1pm-4pm on Saturdays at weekends. Those time limits have now ended so all the permit holders in and around Wellington – around 1,300 at last count – and the other 20,000-plus across Somerset can use all 16 sites whenever they are open on any weekday and at weekends.

Other simplifications include a clearer way to identify vehicles requiring permits by using their “N1” registration category, which is checkable on the V5 registration document or online, and adding all campervans and minibuses to the permit system due to their van-like size and potential carrying capacity.

PS: This month sees day changes for Wellington’s collections. The Summer Bank Holiday on Monday 28 August means all collections that week, up to Friday 1 September, will take place one day later, including Friday pick-ups on Saturday 2 September. Spotlight on: Wellington Dementia Action Alliance What is a DAA? In March 2012, the government together with the Alzheimer’s Society launched the Prime Minister’s “Challenge on Dementia” which has since been extended to the “Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia 2020”. Establishing a goal that there should be a greater focus on independent living with more people being able to live in their homes for as long as it is in their best interests to do so.

The national DAA initiative was created to support people with dementia to live well in their community and enable them to continue doing many everyday things that we take for granted, such as shopping, gardening, visiting the sports centre, the pub or simply going for a walk. Carers also need understanding and support to be able to continue undertaking every day tasks while accompanying someone with more severe cognitive problems. In the five years since the launch over 350 action alliances have been established throughout the UK and currently there are 11 alliances already established in Somerset including our own here in Wellington, which formed in November 2016.

Our Aims?

With more than 9,000 people diagnosed with dementia in Somerset, Wellington DAA’s mission is to assist those within our community, by signposting services, resources and facilities that are available to ensure people living with dementia and memory loss live well with the condition and support carers and families of people with the disease to feel that Wellington is a place they can live in comfort and security It further aims to improve the awareness of the condition by seeking business partners, community groups and education hubs who express an interest in improving their understanding and perhaps adapting their practices to better serve the community.

We aim to create a community that supports people with dementia by showing how just simple changes can make life more fulfilling for those with dementia and enable them to continue being an active part of the community.

In establishing the Wellington DAA we have bought together many local businesses, service professionals and government agencies from within the town to work towards making Wellington dementia friendly. All work and awareness is undertaken on a voluntary basis by our members, all of whom have a genuine interest in improving both their own understanding and that of the wider community and the DAA would welcome anyone with similar ambitions Craig Holmes 76
