Wellington Ladies Probus Local Author Elizabeth McDowell is the special guest speaker at the Ladies Probus Meeting on 20th April.

Elizabeth will speak on her book "Darlingest" a book about Milverton in the War. Jacqueline Tapsfield, the President of Ladies Probus, said that they are looking for potential new members and any Wellington Ladies who are interested in meeting and listening to Elizabeth McDowell, are very welcome to come along to the meeting.

Jacqueline said that they are a group of young at heart retired professional and business ladies whose object is to enable ladies to meet for companionship.

The Club meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the United Reform Church Hall in Mantle Street.

own Council Newsletter pril & May 2017 New Councillor for Rockwell Green

February 23rd saw a closely contested by-election in Rockwell Green won by Lynda Russell-Cairns. who provides a short background for this Newsletter: My name is Lynda Russell-Cairns, I live in Waterloo Road Wellington and I am married with one daughter, two step-daughters and seven grandchildren. My husband and I were lucky enough to re-locate to this part of the country three years ago.

Having spent all my life in Hampshire, working for a local Solicitor, Estate Agent and before choosing to move to Wellington I also ran my own successful business for many years.

I have always had a keen interest in local politics and the need for the community’s voice to be heard.

Wellington and Rockwell Green, is as I’ve found, such fantastic places to live and the friendliest of people seem to live and work here.

I am currently the Secretary of the Basins Volunteer Group, we are a group of volunteers who look after and maintain the Ponds in Corams Lane, and most of the residents of Rockwell Green have a great access to this beautiful area. The footpath from Rockwell Green to Wellington Sports Centre and the Wellington Rugby Club takes in an abundance of wildlife that this area can offer.

I am on the committee for the Wellington Museum and when this is open from March to October I work there on a voluntary basis, this, I find is a great place to volunteer and is rich with the history of Rockwell Green and the surrounding villages.

I am also a committee member of the Wellington Community Centre.

Updating the War Memorial At a meeting of the Town Council Mr Ray Hitchcock drew attention to a number of names which were missing from the War Memorial in the Park. Research by him and Mike Perry for publication of their books “Our Boys”, “Our WW2 Boys (and a girl)” and “Our Other Boys” had revealed that there were a number of names that could be potentially added to the memorial. The Council have agreed to place the missing names on the Memorial. However, before doing so the War Memorials Trust strongly recommend that the list of names to added are publicised. This is mainly so that attention can be drawn to what the Council are doing and give an opportunity for anyone else to come forward with names that might have been missed. The names to be added are :

Grants Since our last newsletter the following grants have been awarded.

Churches Together – Howard Road Fun Day £200 towards the cost of the event.

WHERE – Partially Sighted Group £1,005 towards the cost of its Partially Sighted Group. This Group assisted in bringing together those who suffer from sensory loss and reduced isolation.

Car Parks North Street TDBC has been giving consideration to a number of options which might alter the flow and layout of this car park. These works would be designed to give greater protection and reduce maintenance of the access road.

In consultation Town Councillors were keen to point out that this access road was one of the last options available for diverting traffic away from the town centre and thereby reducing congestion.

South Street TDBC have agreed to replace the gate at the entrance from the car park to South Street, with railings. It is hoped that this will then increase the accessibility for all as currently those with wheelchairs or pushchairs are able to get through.

Public Spaces Protection Order Following support from the Town Council, Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) had now introduced a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that would effectively outlaw the use of “intoxicating substances” – alcohol and psychoactive substances, known as “legal highs”, before they were outlawed – in public.

This replaces the previous “No Drinking” order that applied to certain areas of Wellington and covers the town as a whole.

The restrictions on alcohol did not apply to pavement cafes or to licensed premises.

Anyone in breach of the order would be committing a criminal offence and could receive a Fixed Penalty Notice or face a fine in court. Police and council enforcement officers would have the power to demand the surrender of the intoxicating substances.

Policing in Wellington Chief Inspector Lisa Simpson accompanied by Inspector Shane Carey, Sergeant Stuart Williams and Police Constable Hayden Smith attended the March Council meeting to address the both the Council’s concerns about the changes to the local police force and Anti-Social behaviour (ASB).

PC Smith was introduced as the Town’s new Beat Manager and Stuart Williams and the Area Sergeant. Both were able to explain how ASB was being addressed in Wellington and that positive results were already being seen.

CI Simpson was able to assure the Town Council that a dedicated team was in place to deal with and respond to any incidents. She made the point that criminality was not just on the street and was constantly changing with the growth of internet crime.

However, recognised the value of community policing and said that everything would be done to assess all situations, maintain a consistent approach and make residents feel safe and confident.

Finger on the Pulse

By Councillor Andrew Govier I have previously commented on the excellent sports clubs we

have in the town. I was delighted recently to see the publication of a Playing Pitch strategy by Taunton Deane Borough Council.

This strategy acknowledged the growing success of the clubs in terms of additional participants meant that the outdoor facilities were no longer adequate. I feel that the strategy offers a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to transform outdoor sports facilities in the town. The plans include the creation of a multi pitch sports hub that could enable the town’s football facilities to move to one site allowing the town’s rugby and cricket clubs to make additional use of the space that football currently utilises. There could also be a high specification artificial sports pitch created in the town to allow play when the weather makes grass pitches unplayable. I was really impressed that at an initial meeting to discuss the proposals there was a willingness of all parties to work together to deliver a huge transformation.

I mentioned in my last article that there was positive news about an extra classroom at Rockwell Green Primary School and I am pleased to see that there is also going to be extra space provided at Beech Grove Primary School as well. The County Council has allocated additional funding to provide an extra classroom to accommodate the growing school age population in the town. The new developments in and around the town are having a significant impact on the numbers and there is a need for a new primary school to be built to match the demand. I have supported a bid to central government for the funding to build this school and we should hear the result of this in the near future. Regardless of the result, I have been working with officers at County Hall to ensure that contingency plans are in place for the new school planned for Longforth Farm. I am pleased that plans are in place to ensure that a new primary school opens there by September 2019.

There have been a number of issues involving anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the town over the last few months. I was concerned that despite the efforts of the police and local authorities this was getting out of hand. There has been a huge reduction in the number of police officers and PCSOs that we have available in the town and I wrote to the police to raise this matter. I am pleased to say that the response I received has been encouraging and the police have got a firm plan in place to tackle these types of issues. They have stressed the importance of us reporting issues to them so they can build up a picture of when and where the problems are occurring. In these days of limited resources, officers are allocated to areas based on demand so it is important that the police management get to hear of problems, so they can respond.

I know that many people are still concerned about the problems with traffic in the town centre.

The Town Council has been working with officers from Somerset County Council for a couple of years now to identify a solution. I am pleased to report that after several delays a new junction layout is soon to be installed at the Longforth Road/High St/Waitrose crossroads. This should allow more cars to go through the junction during each lighting phase and it is hoped that this will reduce the queues that we currently suffer from. No one is pretending that it will completely resolve all of the problems but hopefully it will make a noticeable difference.

Time for a bout of inflation?

What was memorable about August 1975? Was it that the month started off with the Bay City Rollers topping the charts? Perhaps it was the particularly dry, warm and sunny weather or was it David Frost’s historic television interviews with US President Nixon? For seasoned UK economists, it will be remembered as the month that witnessed the highest annual UK inflation rate in modern peace time – trawling through the data shows that during this month, the annual inflation rate hit an eye-popping 26.9%! It stayed above 20% well into 1976 and was generally high thereafter until the early 1980s. A perfect storm of rising oil prices, a heavily unionised workforce demanding higher wages and the repercussions of the loose monetary policy of the early 1970s stoked this period of high inflation. For many, it was a painful economic experience as spiralling costs took their toll. It was the start of a steady rise in unemployment which peaked in 1984.

Interest rates were also high at over 11%, although not enough to protect the real value of savings which rapidly lost their purchasing power during this time.

A generation later and such a scenario seems almost unimaginable. Inflation has been benign since the turn of the millennium with inflation averaging just over 2.7% (as measured by the retail price index or RPI). The main reason for low inflation in the modern era is globalisation – in an increasingly global economy, cheap imported goods have kept a lid on inflation in developed markets, such as the UK. Indeed, at the beginning of 2016, many economists were worrying about Japanese-style deflation in developed markets (in other words, falling prices or negative inflation – a phenomenon that plagued the Japanese economy for the best part of two decades). However, inflation is now very much back on the agenda and not just in the UK; in the euro-zone, inflation reached a four-year high in January. I am not for one moment suggesting a return to the 1970s

levels described above but inflation has a nasty habit of overshooting expectations and even a return to more modest values will be a shock to the system.

The lazy explanation for rising inflation in the UK is the weakness of sterling following the Brexit vote. It is true that sterling has fallen in value by about 15% against a basket of the world’s major currencies since the vote and this is yet to fully feed through into the inflation figures. This makes imports more expensive but our exports are conversely more competitive. Until recently, the rising oil price has been another factor. However, inflation is a global phenomenon. For example, after being a deflationary force in the global economy, China is now exporting inflation. As I write, fresh data from China show that factory prices from China rose at an annual rate of 7.8% in February (the fastest pace since 2008) and have been rising since September (see chart). This is a trend that is happening elsewhere – for a country that has gorged itself on cheap imports, the UK is now faced with the reality of rising costs of goods imported from Emerging Markets. Rising wage costs are another inflationary force; labour markets (especially in the UK and US) appear to be very tight just at a time when both governments are committing to curbing immigration. The dilemma for central banks is that they do not want to increase interest rates too quickly to curb inflation as governments and individuals remain heavily indebted. Moreover, a dose of inflation is a debtor’s friend as it will reduce the real value of the debt and this will help beleaguered government balance sheets. However, interest rates are likely to rise; they have started to do so in the US and some commentators are expecting three or even four further rises in the coming year.

The UK may follow suit later in the year. The threat of inflation is already bringing higher bond yields (falling bond prices) on the expectation of higher interest rates down the line.

Chinese factory prices on the rise…

The investment background for the next 12 months is perversely challenging. Higher economic growth, inflation and bond yields are all set to battle improving company profits. Is this the best Supermini yet?

The recently launched New Micra from Nissan has the motoring world purring amidst claims that it is better than the class leading Ford Fiesta and the VW Polo, but is it all hype? I thought I would give it the once over so as soon as it arrived in the Wellington Motors showroom Sales Manager Andy Bowrah rang me to say "you have to take this out for a spin - it is phenomenal". I don't need asking twice!

My first reaction was "wow" it is a stunning looking car both in its normal one colour version or with second colour decals and side mouldings (body flashes to us laymen) on the exterior with matching two colour interior that gives both an air of luxury and sportiness (is that a word?). It looks much bigger than the previous Micra and I understand it uses the same chasis as the Nissan Note. My wife has a Nissan Note which she loves, mainly because it is so roomy both in the front and even in the back when I drive and have the seat further back to accommodate my long legs and ample stomach. The Micra has the same feel of space but with a much sportier ergonomic look to the interior, and the design team have clearly spent a great deal of time considering comfort and driving position as the seat is very easy to adjust and the pedals feel well spaced and comfortable for stop/start journeys as well as longer motorway journeys. I hate it when you change gear and your foot catches an adjoining pedal - this certainly wasn't the case with the New Micra. The boot is extremely roomy for a small car - I am told it has a boot capacity of 300 Litres which expands to over a 1000 Litres when the seats are folded down. As I still drink pints I find it difficult to describe 300 Litres but take it from me it is pretty spacious and will take your holiday luggage and the kids with ease. I was also impressed with how easy it was to remove and replace the load cover - a particular bug bear of mine.

Technically the New Micra is light years ahead of its predecessor with a massive 7 inch colour display that makes managing the navigation system, Bose audio system, phone connectivity, as well as real time driver aids such as the hands-free parking. which are extremely easy to operate/ Now the Bose audio system is something else - the sound quality is stunning and with six-speakers, two are in the driver's headrest, you get all-round stereo or you can adjust to suit the passengers.

If they are chatting in the back the driver can be in his own sound pod. I thought this would be distracting but you can adjust to make it as comfortable as you wish. Test driving the car on my own I found the Bose system truly amazing.

I tested the 0.9L Turbo Petrol version which was very nippy, comfortable with great road holding, stability and fun to drive, it also felt like a big car on the motorway and cruised without straining - I would be very happy to do long journeys. It is early days but the petrol combined consumption is claimed as 64.2mpg for the petrol version and a massive 88.3 for the 1.5 diesel. In reality I would probably drop about 10-15 mpg off these figures but they are still pretty impressive.

Well is it all hype? This car is head and shoulders better than the previous Micra and I think is a class leader.

It looks stunning and is enjoyable to drive and economical to run with enough extras and safety features to keep even us motor nerds happy.

But don't take my word for it give Andy Bowrah and his sales team a ring on 01823 667511 and have a test drive. You won't regret it.

Ray Robinson has always enjoyed eating smoked foods and often visited a Smokehouse in Suffolk on family holidays. This nurtured the dream of one day owning his own smokehouse and eventually Ray achieved that dream with the opening of Robinsons Smokehouse in November 2015.

Once a storage barn on the outskirts of West Buckland. Ray with the help of Ronni Buckley, who ran the Suffolk Smoke House of his childhood dreams, has painstakingly renovated the barn to become a traditional Smokehouse.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Smokehouse to see how the process is carried out and to sample and purchase the produce.

Ray appreciates good food and is passionate about producing excellent smoked food and therefore he takes considerable care when selecting suppliers who are all local. Ray said "we have selected only the best produce as we want to provide our customers with a premium product that they will enjoy.

We use local oak logs rather than wood chips which is the traditional way of smoking and imparts greater flavour. In particualr we do not use additives and preservatives".

Two types of smoking take place on-site, cold and hot.

The cold smoking is used to ensure optimum flavour in the product, whether it is meat, fish or cheese. The hot smoking is then used on some products to ensure it is tasty, crisp and ready to eat.

When pressed, Ray, said that his favourite product was the ham hocks. He said they were full of flavour, perfect to cook and delicious to eat.

The retail outlet at Robinson's has been designed to display all the produce which is reasonably priced and perfect for that special meal or dinner party. Have you tried smoked wild duck or smoked prawns or even smoked Haggis and Garlic Bulbs?

Get out in the garden By Nick Cater

Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

While April may be the month when hundreds of households across the Wellington area get their new garden waste sticker, there are plenty of ways through the year to make more of what you have with your outdoor space, which will conserve resources and time, and keep more of your money in your pocket.

Whether for flowers, a lawn or vegetables, gardening offers many ways to cut waste, save money and enjoy fresh air and exercise. And for families in and around Wellington, going a bit greener outdoors, such as by doing more reuse and recycling, is easy and need not take much time.

With the improving weather and everything starting to shoot up, now is the time to try growing some veg in your garden or allotment. Just got a small back yard? Try pots. Only a window box or window sill? Herbs are the answer to spice up your cooking.

You could start composting or, for those with some experience, takes steps to improve the results with extra ingredients to ensure the right balance of brown and green or carbon and nitrogen, as well as moisture, air and heat. Almost 80,000 of us in Somerset already have a black compost bin to help contain and warm up the mixture, while many more have heaps in the corner of their garden. For possible bin bargains, check the Somerset Waste Partnership website.

Check you are using all the composting ingredients you can, from all fruit and veg peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags, to the bedding and all the rest from vegetarian pets (much better there than in your refuse bin) and even a little shredded cardboard to help the flow of air through the mixture to ensure the right bacteria and bugs can breathe.

Got a heap not a bin? Worn out cotton or wool garments or a threadbare wool carpet will help keep a heap warm, before rotting down themselves. And if you want to reuse clothes or carpets elsewhere, woolly jumpers can be used to line hanging baskets, while carpets will suppress weeds around established plants or when starting a new flower bed.

Again, even if you have limited space, there are options to transform food waste, with welldesigned wormeries and digesters available to make great plant feed. And these can take and convert a far wider range of waste foods into something of real value.

inspiration for children: turn old drinks cartons into bird feeders, grow seedlings in yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, loo rolls and old fruit trays, reuse plastic bottles as tiny greenhouses, or create a mini-wormery in a jar to watch composting in action.

And try a few of the many uses for the nutrient-rich remains of coffee grounds, which lose just 1% of the beans’ overall value to make a mug of the stuff, leaving 99% to grow mushrooms and much more.

Meanwhile, the humble used tea bag, once cooled, can grow a fine crop of mustard and cress for summer salads, or be sprinkled with grass seeds and left to develop before adding to any bare patches in your lawn.

Drop it off at Wellington (Poole) Recycling Centre, which is open Mondays 8am-7pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 8am-4pm; and Sundays 8am-1pm.You will find a skip or bin for almost everything, including all your waste from any garden spring cleaning, all those plastic pots, tubs and trays, plus dozens of other materials. If you have a van, pick-up or car-towed trailer, do not forget your permit.

Remember that some things are not accepted at recycling sites, such as materials infected or suspected of being infected with Ash dieback (Charala fraxinea), or including Japanese Knotweed or Common Ragwort.

PS: This month will see day changes for Wellington’s collections around Easter week. Good Friday is on 14 April and its collections will be on Saturday 15 April, while Easter Monday is on 17 April and the collections all that week will be one day later, including Friday pick-ups on Saturday 22 April. Do check the Somerset Waste Partnership web site to be sure how they affect you.
