ooking over the Edge

As I write this piece the awful scenes from the Brussels bombing are unfolding on television and, like us all, my heart goes out to all those whose lives have changed for ever because of a few unseen fanatics. But nothing really changes. 100 years ago we were in the second year of the First World War and about to witness the Dublin Easter Rising. Seventy five years ago Nazi Germany invaded Belguim and Holland and even 200 years ago we were breathing a sigh of relief as the war with France had recently ended with Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo. The big difference between the war we face today and the major wars in the past was that the enemy was known and was recognisable as it was soldier against soldier. Nevertheless the reason we and other countries usually go to War is to protect their homeland, their dependencies, their allies and their way of life. As an island nation in recent history we have managed to avoid the disaster of occupation through strong defence with air and sea superiority. This defence has been negated by opening our borders. While I believe that economic and skills migration is necessary and good for our country and the World it must be managed through proper border controls. Today’s enemy is faceless and lives amongst the community, not suspected by friends or family and just waiting for the right opportunity or the order to strike. He (or she) has no regard for their own life and their enemy is anyone - man, woman or child. Therefore it seems a nonsense to me that we allow the 500 million inhabitants of the European Union to pass freely across open borders mostly with peaceful intent but with a tiny minority biding their time. Pupils excel in Rotary Photographic competition For the past four years the Rotary Club of Wellington has welcomed entries from local schools for the RIGB (Rotary International in Great Britain) National Youth Photographic Competition. In these four years candidates from schools in the Wellington area have been successful in producing some really lovely photographs. The competition requires candidates to prepare a portfolio of three photographs on a specified theme. Each year one of the themes has been of the local area, and successful candidates have seen their photographs published in The Wellington Edge with the winners appearing on the cover of the Wellington Town Guide. In addition to the local theme, candidates are invited to submit another portfolio of three photographs on a theme specified by RIGB which are then entered initially at a local level. followed by a Rotary District level comprising Somerset, North and North East Somerset and parts of Wiltshire and District. The winning photographs in the District competition go on to take part in the national competition which is held in the summer. This year’s RIGB theme of “Our World is Beautiful” attracted very high competition with three local entrants winning the District Competition Blemished Beauty by David Clackson and now go on to the National Finals. Youth Voice The first Youth Voice session to take place in Court Fields at lunchtime was very successful. There was a very good attendance. The opportunity was taken to discuss the vandalism that had recently taken place in Wellington Park.The young people were all horrified at the extent of the damage and came up with a number of suggestions to prevent it happening in the future.

Wellington Town Council Grants The Council are always keen to support local clubs and organisations and have recently made the following grants to a variety of groups: •

Wellington Tennis Club: £1,500 The Tennis Club are keen to develop its facilities and this grant was a contribution towards the cost of developing a third court.

• Transition Town Wellington: £1,600 The Transition Town’s Sustainable Food Group has been developing a project to plant fruit and nut bushes in community spaces around Wellington. The resulting harvest would be for the residents of Wellington to use. This grant is a contribution towards the cost of plants. • WHERE Partially Sighted Group: £1075 This grant is to help the Group bring together those who suffer from sensory loss and isolation. It is part of the valuable work that WHERE do in the town. • Wellington Library Friends Group: £120 The Group had been formed, following a reduction in the Library services, to support and promote the Library as a community resource. It wished to use the Library outside of its normal opening hours for a wide range of public events. In order to do this the Group would need to provide Public Liability Insurance. The grant will be used to provide that insurance. • Wellington Basins Volunteer Group: £589 The Group had asked for £589 to purchase an electric start wheeled strimmer. The strimmer would be used to clear brambles and vegetation in and around the Basins area. The Council recognised the hard work that the Group undertook in its efforts to maintain an important historic area. It agreed that the grant be made on the condition that the electric start wheeled strimmer be shared with other similar organisations. • Wellington Community Centre: £1,183.20 The Centre had already received funds which would enable them to provide accessible toilets and replace the leaking roof on the toilet block They had asked for a grant from the Council to provide a rear fire door and vented window. The Council were pleased to see how the Centre was developing and its increased use. A grant of £1,183.20 was made.

Grants - continued • Wellington in Bloom: £1,250 The Town Council had supported Wellington in Bloom over many years for the work it did in and around the town. In addition to the usual contribution it made to the well being of the town, it intended this year to mark the 10th anniversary of the successful Swains Lane Nature Reserve. • Churches Together in Wellington: £200 Churches Together in Wellington had asked for this grant to be used in connection with the 2016 Howard Road Fun Day. The aim of the Fun Day was to promote a community spirit in the Howard Road area. This year the group wanted to expand its activities on the day to include all age groups

Food Town - new organisers are appointed The Town Council are delighted that a community interest company dedicated to the development of food projects in the South West has agreed to take over the Wellington Food Town initiative with immediate effect to ensure that the Food Fair planned for Saturday 3 September goes ahead seamlessly. Beverley and Sarah Milner Simonds have run the demo kitchen at the last two fairs and are the driving force behind the very successful Burnham on Sea Food & Drink Festival. That festival has a very similar ethos and feel as Wellington Food Fair, and many of the traders are the same. Their first aim is to meet with the community groups and the many volunteers who have been vital to the event’s success and listen to them. Sarah tole the Edge “Wellington Food Fair is a great event and we are looking forward to working with many familiar traders, the committed group of volunteers, community groups and the Wellington town centre businesses to continue the festival in the style and manner that you have come to expect.” Beverley Continued “We have worked alongside the committee at the last two festivals, organising and compering the demo stage in the Scout Hall. We know what a well-loved and well run event this is and we will be working hard to protect that reputation. Beech Grove pupils help to Save the Rhino In October, 2015, the year sixes from Beech Grove Primary School went on a residential trip to Paignton zoo. Part of the educational package was a lesson that taught about endangered species of animals.After learning the figures about the rhino,like by the time they turned twenty there may not be any wild rhinos left they knew they had to take action. They returned with a life size model of a baby rhino, which the school had won in a competition . It will be decorated and returned for the Rhino trail to be held around Torbay and Exeter in the summer.The pupils have taken part in a colouring competition and The Mayor, deputy Mayor, editor of the Wellington Weekly and Governors and Friends of the school had the final choice. Two girls Fiore and Mandie, developed a rhino project between them, to raise awareness and money. They ran a stall at our school’s Christmas fayre, and Fiore has decided to donate all of her Christmas money, giving a total of £200! They never thought that were capable of raising so much! Since the stall, they have been chosen to participate in Children’s Parliament. This is a school competition that is taking place in Somerset. Save the Rhino has been chosen in order to continue spreading the plight of the Rhino to a wider audience. The banner above has been designed by the children, kindly made by Ksigns of wellington, to help raise awareness and will be used as part of the presentation then displayed in the playground as a reminder that everyone can make a difference.

Christmas Lights to be switched on earlier Now that last Christmas is fading from our memory the Town Council held a public meeting with traders in the town on Monday 21 March to give an opportunity to discuss the annual Christmas Lights Switch On event and the display of Christmas Lights. The Council listened to the the views of the traders to see if there was anything extra that everyone might be able to do to promote Wellington and encourage more people into town. A number of ideas were put forward regarding activities and events that might be arranged during this time of year. The traders themselves agreed to meet to talk about what could be done. It was also suggested by the Carnival Committee that they would be willing to organise a Christmas Street Fair. The main discussion centred around the date of the switch on of the Lights. The traders present were very much of the view that this should be much earlier than at present and have suggested the switch on take place on Saturday 19 November 2016 – this would give shops and traders six trading Saturdays in the lead up to Christmas. The Council will be considering this suggestion but if anyone has any views please let us know.

Tips for the Best Man’s Speech and toast

You have been asked to be Best Man at your friend’s or sibling’s wedding. You have safely managed the stag party and negotiated getting the Groom through the wedding service without dropping the ring and now you have to make a speech. You were proud to be asked to be Best Man but this is the bit you have been dreading. However confident you are, standing up in front of an audience with an age range of one to ninety, many of whom you do not know and all are expecting great things from you. So here are a few tips to help you prepare and deliver the speech of your life. 1. Do not, I repeat, do not try to cuff it. However confident you are off the cuff speeches do not work. Nerves and/or emotion take over and it is easy to lose the thread, babble on for too long or just become boring or tongue tied. Think of Smithy in Gavin and Stacey! 2. Prepare well in advance, learn it and practice it out loud to someone who you know well enough that you do not mind them being critical. 3. Having learnt your speech make sure you take it with you so that you can use it as a comfort blanket if you get brain freeze. I always type my speeches out in full, double spaced with a margin on one side with key words to keep me on track. Then cut it out and stick it onto cards. Number the cards! 4. Keep the speech in your own words - not too stilted. By all means refer to your notes but try not to read them in full as that will sound insincere - it comes back to having learnt it thoroughly 4. Do not DRINK to calm the nerves before your speech. By all means enjoy the glass of sparkling on arrival at the Reception but remember there is plenty of time left after you have dispensed with your duties to enjoy the Reception. 5. If you are not a natural joke teller then keep the funny bits to one liners. However, it is well worth having a ‘relaxer’ to start the speech. This will relax the audience as well as give you confidence, Something like “It is an honour to make this toast and refreshing to know that I am not the only one who is nervous as I can see that [Groom’s name] and Mrs [Brides Mother] are looking a little apprehensive and well they might! 6. Avoid swearing or telling embarrasing stories - no one wants to hear about the Groom’s sordid past or what happened with the stripper on the stag night. Remember you want to remain friends with the Groom, his family and his new wife for ever. Keep as a yardstick not to repeat or tell stories that you wouldn’t want your Mum to know if they were about you. 7. Stories from your shared childhood or friendship with the Groom that people will recognise as a part of his character are ideal. 8. Stand up straight, look the audience in the eye and take a deep breath. My tip just before you start is to clench your right fist very hard for 5 seconds and then gradually (over 10 seconds) relax the grip. It is amazing how this reduces the tension. 9. Keep your speech to no more than 10 minutes and try to speak clearly and slowly. Remember you want the Great Aunts to be able to hear and understand. Try not to embellish as that will lose cohesion and lengthen the speech beyond the fidget level. 10. Remember that your speech is leading to the most important toast: “Ladies and Gentlemen, please rise and raise your glasses to the lovely Bride and lucky Groom Mr & Mrs.................. “

Finger on the Pulse By Councillor Andrew Govier I’m sure that people will be a little confused at what is going on with the proposal to close the public toilets at Longforth Road and I’m not surprised! Looking back I see that I mentioned this time last year that TDBC had agreed to retain them for another year. During this year the Town Council has tried to arrive at a position where the toilets could be retained and we have offered to pay the cost of keeping them from our own funds. We have done this because we think they provide a valuable resource for local people and visitors to the town who arrive at the nearby coach park. Unfortunately, as things stand, this offer has not been accepted and the toilets are due to close at the end of March. The toilet closure is as a result of further cuts by TDBC. This will also mean less money for local voluntary groups; less hanging baskets and floral displays and other reductions that will have impact on the town. I realise that TDBC has been forced into these reductions by cuts imposed by central government but I do wonder whether they have got their priorities right. At the same time as making these cuts they have allocated £40,000 towards a feasibility study into reopening the town’s railway station. This money is a contribution towards the hundreds of thousands that will be needed to complete such a study. There is no indication where the rest of the money will come from and I would rather see this money maintaining local services than being given to consultants. There would be many merits to the town having a railway station but at this time, given the physical, practical and financial obstacles, this money could be better spent protecting threatened services or achieving more realistic transport aims. On this subject, there are two initiatives that the Town Council has been promoting. The first is trying to sort out the congestion that currently occurs in the town centre. We have been working with Somerset County Council to try to resolve these problems and we have just received some plans that will try to make things better at the Longforth/High St/Waitrose junction. These will be put out to consultation so people can have a look and give their opinions. The second positive development is that we are working with Somerset County Council to investigate the feasibility of an extended evening bus service between the town and Taunton. We are trying to establish the cost of two extra buses each evening from Monday to Saturday. We believe that this could be a vital service for people who work or wish to socialise in Taunton. We have asked the County Council to undertake a tendering exercise for us to establish the likely costs and I will update you next time. As I have said before there are always positive initiatives going on in the town. We are holding a number of events throughout the month to encourage people to access services and facilities within the town. On 6th April at St John’s Primary School between 11am and 2pm organised by Project Wellington. This event will be a fun day with an Easter theme providing fun activities for young children and their families. There is another excellent programme just starting that may be of interest to anyone who hasn’t done any exercise for years and would like to improve their health. Tone Leisure are running this supportive programme at Wellington Medical Centre and at Rockwell Green Christian Centre. They will provide one-to-one support that will be tailored to your individual circumstances. If you are interested in giving it a go, please contact Wellington Sports Centre on 01823 663010.

Mobile Phones - Treacherous Tariffs

07514 059313 When I grew up in the 70/80s it struck me that loyalty was www.Taunton.IT a good thing. But it seems these days, where tech is concerned, loyalty costs. This is really prevalent with mobile phone charges. The pricing can be hard to compare. ‘Monthly contracts’ versus ‘Pay As You Go’ versus ‘SIM Only’ - this obfuscation just means the mobile companies make more money than you ought to be paying. So, lets try and make things easier to understand. It’s time to make some savings! There are 3 aspects of mobile phones you need to separate in your head and consider in turn: The Phone. The SIM. The Phone Number. At the simplest level, you can make separate decisions for each of these. A SIM is a small computer chip you plug into a phone - often after taking the battery out first. SIMs are Operator specific. If you phone is, for eg, on the O2 network, then in fact you have an O2 SIM chip in the phone. Change that SIM for, say, an EE one, then your phone is suddenly on the EE network. Phone Numbers are only assigned to SIMs and can jump (upon request) to new SIMs. Your phone itself doesn’t have the number, the SIM does. Some phones are ‘locked’ to a network to try and prevent this easy SIM change over, but there are local shops who can unlock a phone so that any SIM will work in it. Now the problem is when you stick with a contract that you took out a few years ago. The usual rule of thumb is to consider costs over 2 years. Get a new phone at, say, £30/month, then the considered total spend is 24 (months) x £30 = £720. This price is meant to cover the cost of buying the phone, plus paying for the ability to make/receive calls/messages etc. Often, however, it turns out to be cheaper to buy a phone up front, and then get a SIM-only deal where you pay monthly just for the right to use a SIM at a lower price - you are not paying for the phone over this 2 year period. If you’re about to buy new, consider buying the phone upfront. If you go over 2 years with your contract - perhaps because you fear losing your number or changing phone, then fear not! Move to a SIM-only deal, which could be with a different network, and keep your phone - and number. The monthly charge will drop dramatically, if you are in the £30/ month realm, and you keep the phone & number you know. (The industry was obliged some years ago to allow users to keep their mobile number when changing to SIMs on a new network.) The operator ‘GiffGaff’ is always worth a check (they are only online - they don’t appear in the shops) and offer great SIM-only deals. Whatever you do, remember: loyalty, sadly, rarely pays.

Rockets Pre-School is part of Rockwell Green Church of England Primary School,

Rockwell Green, Wellington. Our fully qualified and experienced staff provide high quality care for children aged 2 - 4 years. Rockets gives children a safe, fun and stimulating environment in a purpose built setting. Rockets is open during School term times. Within Rockets we have a wide range of activities and resources available to the children. In the room there is an interactive whiteboard which we use for various activities and a computer that the children can use. There are child friendly toilets and excellent changing facilities. In Rockets there are seven members of staff who are all qualified at Level 3 or above with everyone being first aid trained. The staff have an enormous amount of experience between them. We are holding an Open Morning on Tuesday 14th June from 9-11am – everyone is welcome to visit and see Rockets in action. You will have the opportunity to chat to staff and look around the setting. Rockets has very close links to the school and have double doors connecting us to the reception class. We have shared playtime when the doors are open. Music sessions are held with the reception class in the school hall with the children who are moving onto school in the September. The children also share play in the outside area on occasions. We attend the school Church services with the older children to prepare them for the experience when they join the school. The transition from Rockets into school is seamless as children are already familiar with the school and the reception teacher. However, children who attend Rockets are not guaranteed a place at the school. We have a Local offer available on the Somerset County Council website showing how our setting provides for children with SEND needs. One of our staff is the Senco for Rockets and they work closely with the school Senco. We have strong links with our parents, there is a home contact book between Rockets and parents. Our Rockets Rhymes and library reading system encourages parents to take an active role in their child’s learning. Staff are always on hand to provide verbal feedback and the start and end of sessions. We hold termly progress meetings with parents. We have organised activities where parents are invited to join us with their child to events like Creative afternoons, garden days etc. At Rockets we have a large secure outdoor area which we use all year round. Outdoor activities contribute to children’s health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them. The children have the opportunity and are encouraged to take part in outdoor child-chosen and adult-led activities, as well as those provided in the indoor space. We provide waterproofs and encourage the children outside whatever the weather.

Hay Fever Relief with Reßexology A brief description of hay fever

Allergy UK describe hay fever (allergic rhinitis), as inßammation of the nose, with symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, blocked/stuffy nose, itchy eyes and sinuses, and Ôpost nasal dripÕ (mucous running down the back of the throat). These symptoms can lead to headaches & sleep interruption. Hay fever is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen and worsens when the pollen count is high. From May - July the problem is caused by the release of grass pollen. Feb - June tree pollen, June Sept weed pollen, and Sept - Oct is peak time for mould spores. Allergic rhinitis can also be caused by dust mites and pets. When pollen enters the body of a hay fever sufferer their immune system over-reacts and releases chemicals, one of which is histamine, which causes inßammation.

How reßexology can help

Reßexology increases blood ßow and improves circulation of oxygen and nutrients around the body. By applying pressure to the hands and feet, other parts of the body are affected. Reßexology supports the immune system, which can help to reduce the effects and severity of hay fever symptoms. On the left is a hand chart showing areas to massage to help relieve the symptoms of hay fever. Rub a small amount of cream on each hand before you begin, and always work both hands to remain balanced. Repeat the sequence 2 to 3 times per day. The Þngers represent the sinuses. Red dotted circles - use the Þrst Þnger and thumb to pinch the tip of each Þnger about 5 times each. Blue dotted lines - start at the top and rub down the length of each Þnger about 5 times each. Pink circles - theses areas represent the lymphatic areas. Use the Þrst Þnger and thumb to pinch the area at the base of each Þnger about 5 times each. The purple star - this area represents the adrenal glands, which help to reduce inßammation. Find the crease at the base of the thumb, follow the line down to the wrist and the point is about half way down that line. Press into the point and massage in a circular motion about 5 times.

How much a week do you think the average householder in and around Wellington and across Somerset pays for waste in their council tax, including kerbside collections, recycling centres and dumping all that rubbish into polluting landfill? A fiver? A tenner? Maybe £20? Nope. Try £3.31 a week - £171.75 this coming year, down from £176.82 over the past 12 months. It covers 52 weekly collections of a dozen recyclable materials including food, 26 fortnightly pick-ups of rubbish for landfill, and the 16-site recycling centre network, including five day Wellington (Poole) and seven-day Taunton (Priorswood). On average, your kerbside recycling costs £37.15, rubbish collections £24.15, all those recycling centres £36.79, while the new Somerset anaerobic digestion plant to turn food into electricity, plus all composting operations, costs £11.59, and the admin for that lot totals £4.88. A typical family’s waste services bill is 47p a day. A bargain, yet it could easily be a better one, especially given that Recycling more: residents’ rubbish will save money, from in and around energy and resources Wellington is part of the shocking £12.7 million Somerset householders will pay to landfill their rubbish this year. Each Somerset household spends £57.19 a year landfilling their waste. Yet on average, 60% of that rubbish bin or the black sacks could be recycled. And much could miss the bin if we reduced waste and made more of an effort to repair, revamp and reuse what we have rather than buying new and discarding the almost new. Take food. Separate from the £14.31 a month the average household spends on waste services, a typical family with children spends around £60 a month throwing away food they could eat. And far too much of that goes into the rubbish bin and off to landfill to decay for decades. Action to stop wasting and landfilling food and drink offers a quick and easy win, with more money in your pocket now - like another £700 a year for your family - and less costs in your next council tax bill if enough people push together to waste far less.

RECYCLING You can find simple food saving ideas at the Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) website at www. somersetwaste.gov.uk, and if after cutting back there is still some unavoidable food waste, recycle it all - every last scrap - through your kerbside food waste container. Or add certain foods, from fruit and veg to tea bags, to your home composting heap. Plans to recycle more packaging weekly at the kerbside and find other solutions to landfill are being discussed, but why wait to waste less and save more? Aside from food’s potential big savings, to save millions more in the next few years, just boost today’s 52% Somerset recycling rate by putting more paper, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, textiles, clothes, shoes, plastic bottles, aerosols, cardboard and aluminium foil in your kerbside boxes. It is easy to make sure almost everything else avoids the rubbish bin. Good quality furniture, white goods and electrical items in working order can be given to Furnitrust, the Taunton Deane furniture reuse charity. Furnitrust can be contacted on 01823 253053 or info@furnitrust.org.uk from 9.30am to 3.15pm, Tuesday to Friday, and it may come and collect larger items. Meanwhile, plenty of other charities and shops will take donations of everything from clothes to jewellery, stamps to phones. And a trip to Wellington (Poole) Recycling Centre – open Mondays 8am-7pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 8am-4pm; and Sundays 8am-1pm – will find a skip or bin for almost everything, from metals to wood, cooking oil to printing cartridges. Meanwhile, for those using Taunton (Priorswood) Recycling Centre, which is open 8am-4pm seven days a week, note that from 4 April all deposits of asbestos and plasterboard must be paid for in advance on the SWP website as part of efforts to improve site safety and cut pollution. And for customer convenience and site security, Taunton Recycling Centre - except for Reuse Shop purchases - will be going cashless in a trial from 3-31 May , taking only credit and debit cards for payments to deposit hardcore, soil, tyres, gas bottles and vehicle parts, to purchase Revive compost, and for all commercial waste. PS: Early warning that May’s two bank holidays mean the usual changes to waste collections. The Early May Bank Holiday on Monday 2 May means all collections are one day later that week, including Friday’s pick-ups on Saturday 7 May. And the Spring Bank Holiday on Monday 30 May means a one-day-later collection all week, including Friday pick-ups on Saturday 4 June. All recycling sites are open on their usual schedules.
