Happy New Year, although it does seem ages ago I haven’t broken my resolutions yet. I never saw the Star Wars movies the first time around. So my New Year resolution is to see them all “in order” throughout the year - sad but much better than dieting. The older I get the easier my life is, but the grumpier I seem to be. My latest grump is being charged for shopping bags. I understand the green reason behind the charge but why introduce a tax that only impacts on men? Men do not carry bags just in case they need to buy something from a shop. I now end up juggling my shopping back to the car which I have parked closer to the shop (at more expense than the 5p saved) just so that I can make a statement. However, all is not lost, I do see a solution. Most men must have one of those little belt holders for their phone somewhere in a drawer back home. resurrect it and use it to keep a plastic bag in. I am also of an age when I go to more funerals than weddings or christenings. While all of them are memorable, few can match the service I went to a few weeks ago for reflecting the character of the friend. The music included “The Frog Song”, “You’re a pink toothbrush I’m a blue toothbrush“ and I am still singing with a smile “I put my finger in a Woodpecker’s hole” - nice one Frostie. Richard Coupe

Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Handel’s Zadok the Priest Saturday 19th March 2016 On Saturday 19th March Laurence Blyth will be conducting Wellington Choral Society’s presentation of Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Handel’s Zadok the Priest at St John’s Church, Wellington. The Nelson Mass is Haydn’s largest mass and one of his best known and beloved choral works. Mozart’s Coronation Mass acquired its nickname after being the preferred music for royal and imperial coronations. Zadok the Priest was the most popular of Handel’s coronation anthems for George II.These are three spectacular pieces and it will be an evening not to be missed. Letter to the Editor
I am writing on behalf of the Rotary Club of Wellington to thank the people of Wellington, Rockwell Green and Westford for their tremendous support during our Christmas street collections. We collected the magnificent sum of £2499.80 which will be shared between the Club’s nominated charities; the Wellington charity W.H.E.R.E, the Meningitis Research Foundation, ShelterBox and other charities supported by Rotary. Except for a couple of wet evenings and a cloudburst on the Saturday morning when Father Christmas was in the centre of town, the mild weather was kind to us. Father Christmas thoroughly enjoyed greeting the children, particularly those in some of the newer housing developments in the area. Unfortunately, due to time constraints we were unable to visit all areas of the town, this is something we aim to rectify next Christmas. The Rotary Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Wellington and district for their continued support and to wish everyone a happy and peaceful 2016. The council’s budget and the level of its council tax for 2016/17 When considering the level of the Town Council’s Council Tax this year Councillors have been giving some thought to how best the Council can maintain and improve services in the town now that it has become clear that the County Council and the Borough Council will be facing even more cuts. It appears that the principal councils will be reducing services to such an extent that in some cases they will be only carrying out those that are a statutory requirement. Councillors have agreed that there is an opportunity to take back responsibility for some of the services carried out locally in the past. They want to do all they can to improve the local environment, co-ordinate support for older people, support families and young people and be pro active in getting people into employment. There will, however, be a cost involved and this has been reflected in the Town Council’s element of the Council Tax for 2016/17. The Town Council’s portion of the Council Tax has traditionally been kept very low. It is one of the lowest in Somerset for a town of this size (£27.40 a year). However, in order to achieve its aims and to take full advantage of the opportunities that have now presented themselves it has been agreed to raise the precept by around 25p per week to £40 per year. Members hope that the community will support its bid to improve services in the town.
Wellington Town Hall – Wetherspoons Wellington Town Council have been informed by Taunton Deane Borough Council of discussions with planners in regards to the old town hall building. We are told that Wetherspoons are planning to submit an amended planning application shortly and are committed to the delivery of the site. Delays have been caused by cost issues due to complications with the building with had to be addressed. If this planning application is agreed then it is hoped a timescale for the works should be received by TDBC. 6

Somerset Choices - short film to help you get started An animated guide showing how the Somerset Choices website can help you access a world of local care and support is now available. Somerset Choices is a website that provides easy access to information and a directory of services, products, groups and events. These include care homes, help at home, mobility equipment, personal assistants, lunch clubs, exercise groups, breaks for carers and lots more. The animated film, found at www. somersetchoices.org.uk/about-thissite/help, demonstrates how the self-help section on the website lets people tap into a wealth of information and advice and search for local services and events to find support that meets their needs. The animation is really helpful if people are not quite sure what they are looking for on the website or if they need a bit of help finding their
way around. Four months on from the launch of the website and there have been over 120,000 page views and 1,000 services registered on the site. Somerset Choices allows people to make informed decisions about who supplies their care and aims to help people to help themselves stay independent, healthy and well. More local care and support providers are being encouraged to upload their details so that the site contains a really comprehensive directory of local services. Providers can register by going to: www.somersetchoices. org.uk/marketplace/register/index The Somerset Choices website has been developed by Somerset County Council, in partnership with the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and District Councils.

Presentation of Badges & Affiliation Ceremony The Royal British Legion (Wellington Branch) and Wellington ACF (The Rifles) celebrated their affiliation with a small ceremony at the Drill Hall, Mantle Street at the end of 2015. Cadets were presented with the badges in front of RBL members, families and the Deputy Mayor. Also in attendance was Lieut. Alastair Aitken, C.O. Wellington ACF (The Rifles) and other Officers from Somerset’s Army Cadet Forces. After attending and speaking in house assemblies in Court Fields and discussions in Youth Voice sessions we are going INTO school. The First Wednesday of every month Youth Voice will be in Court Fields at lunchtime. It is hoped this will grow and become more frequent in the future. Wellington Youth Voice also meets every Wednesday from 3.15 - 5pm at Wellington Youth Centre during Term Time

Finger on the Pulse By Councillor Andrew Govier I hope that you had a good Christmas and that 2016 has started positively for you.
I know that Christmas 2015 was made a lot better for a number of individuals and families through the efforts of many people who worked over the Christmas period. As well as the usual dedicated efforts of health workers; carers; the police and the other agencies that usually provide essential cover, this year their efforts were boosted by local voluntary groups. I know that the local Christian group, Besom, provided a number of food parcels, toys and support to families who were in desperate need. In addition, the Churches Together lunch on Christmas Day, for those who would otherwise have been on their own, was well supported and appreciated by those who attended. Well done to all concerned! Some of these efforts were linked with the work of Wellington One. I have written about WO before and the group is really starting to make a real difference in the town. It is a multi-agency grouping including representatives from TDBC; the police; Somerset County Council and other groups.The group meets twice a week and deals with a wide spectrum of activities including housing issues, anti-social behaviour, isolation and loneliness, child support and domestic abuse. The ultimate aim is to try to stop problems occurring in the first place or, when they do, to have a more resilient response in place. If there is any issue that you feel the group should be looking at, then please use my contact details to let me know. As I mentioned last time, the Town Council has been looking at its budget for the coming year and at last month’s meeting we agreed to increase the precept(the amount that we ask local people to pay for Town Council services). This is going up by 25p a week for most households in the town. The council has been made aware that there will be further service reductions from Taunton Deane and Somerset County Councils and we are determined to try to ensure that local people still get the services that they need. In addition, we are aware that there a number of services that local people need that are currently not provided and we are working on plans to start to provide these. We intend to provide better support for older people; children and families; the environment and a number of other new initiatives. We hope that people will feel that their money is being used effectively and efficiently and is helping to make Wellington an even better place to live. TDBC are currently undertaking a review of sports pitches in the town. It is very clear that the sports club in the town are expanding, particularly in their youth sections, which is really good news. We need to ensure that there is a plentiful supply of good quality pitches available so that this can continue.The idea of a sports ‘hub’ is gaining some momentum.This would involve identifying an area of land where a number of sports could have appropriate facilities provided. I really believe that this is the way forward for sport in the town. Many clubs are very happy with their current facilities but this would provide the extra capacity that a growing town will need. It’s still relatively early 2016. Have you paused to think about making some changes this year? We can go for weeks, months or years putting up with distressing symptoms, aches and pains. What happens during a treatment?
Using fingers and thumbs the practitioner makes gentle rolling movements (known as ‘moves’) over soft tissue at precise body points. No massage or manipulation is used. It’s usually done with the patient wearing light clothing. People are often surprised at how little is done and how relaxed they feel.
What else does it work well for? A multitude of conditions including:
Headaches may result from tightness in the neck or jaw. Bowen is very effective at helping to resolve some of these puzzles.

Global award success for Wellington Motors
Wellington Nissan at Chelston roundabout are celebrating having won Nissan’s highest global retail honour for their outstanding sales performance and customer care. In 2015 only three UK Nissan dealerships won the prestigious award. In the last few years Wellington Motors were also recognised as Nissan’s After Sales Dealer of the Year and are a past winner of two Motor Trader magazine customer care awards. Dealer Principal Michael Finn was quick to recognise his staff for their professionalism, hard work and skill and said “We are thrilled to receive this global award as it is only presented where there is an exceptional standard of service across all areas of a business. We have a focussed, well established team that works together to consistently deliver the highest levels of customer care, and its great to have the recognition. Every member of the team has contributed to this award and can feel rightfully proud of what we have achieved.” Michael Finn (right) receiving the 2015 Nissan Global Award from James Wright I asked Mr Finn what made Wellington Motors stand Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB) out above the thousands of dealerships across the World. He invited me to spend some time with the various departments to judge for myself. This was slightly unfair because as the owner of a Nissan purchased from Wellington Motors (and not my first) I can confirm that the customer care is outstanding. From the sales team, whose knowledge of their product and available stock is exceptional, to the Service desk whose common sense approach to managing customers’ expectations is very impressive and on to the nuts and bolts (literally) of the organisation where the quality of vehicle servicing and repair reflects the professionalism that pervades the whole organisation. They also have excellent coffee, a free car wash for their customers on a Saturday morning as well as a pick up and drop off service for customers whose vehicle is in for maintenance. Over the next few issues of the Edge I will look at each of the departments to see what is so special about them. However, returning to the sales team, whenever I have been to Wellington Motors to browse the stock, often with no intention to buy, I have never felt pressurised and the staff are friendly and willing to help but not pushy. They have enough staff so that customers are not left hanging around if they have a question or want more information. Instead of a sales pitch, the potential customer receives balanced and honest information to allow them to make a decision. In particular I like the interface between the sales staff and the sales manager, Andy Bowrah, who had his finger on the pulse and his team were willing to involve him with their customers to ensure that any concerns were properly considered. For those readers who know Andy he is much more friendly than when he is playing competition pool! So what is the winning combination? Clearly professionalism, quality training and selection of the right people for the right jobs and that is reflected in the showroom where the atmosphere is relaxed, assured and welcoming. Are you interested in trying - Wellington Bowling Club Lawn bowls can claim to be the oldest sport still being played in the UK. The first set of rules to be published was in 1670 by none other than King Charles II. This is some 70 years before rules for golf or cricket were first published. Several clubs claim to be the oldest, there is evidence that the green used by Southampton Bowls Club was first used in 1187 with the first game of bowls (played to similar rules used now) in 1299. However, there is still some debate between sports historians with the earliest categorical evidence of bowls being played circa 1500. It was around this time the game took off in popularity being played by all classes of men, often associated with large sums of money wagered on the outcome of games. There have been periods in history when bowls has been banned from being played by the “working” man. In the 16th century it was considered an unwelcome distraction from the strategically essential archery practise, then in the 17th and 18th century the church intervened to have playing of the game banned on the Sabbath.There is a famous story that Sir Francis Drake insisted on finishing his game of bowls at Plymouth Hoe before taking on and defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) makes several mentions of Bowls (or bowles) in his poems and plays, including Cymbeline, King Lear and Hamlet. In Wellington the bowls club was founded following a meeting of the Wellington Athletic Union on the 5th September 1906, the first green was opened on the 8th May 1907 and was laid where the rugby pitches are now before the club moved to its current location in Corams Lane in May 1911. The proximity to the town railway station no doubt made this an attractive location to encourage visiting teams, though it is recorded that Bridgwater refused the offer of a fixture in 1910 because the train service was inadequate. Indeed most games were internal club matches with competitive matches against other clubs relatively rare across most of the country until after the Second World War when alternative means of transport became more widely available. Today Wellington Bowling Club is a vibrant sports club with over 100 playing members and a further 60 social members. This includes a healthy Ladies section with around 30 players. Our members are all ages, we have several teenagers and our oldest playing member is 92 years young later this year.We play all year round on our one indoor rink and during the summer months (April to September) on our outdoor green which has seven rinks. Our men play in the South West Somerset league on Saturday’s, the West Somerset triples league on Thursday evenings and the Exeter and district over 60s triples league on a Wednesday afternoon. Our Ladies play in the South and West Somerset Ladies league and we have approximately 60 mixed friendlies each season where men and ladies of all ages and abilities join to play against other local clubs in friendly matches which are always great fun and played in the terrific spirit that lawn bowls is famous for. Tablets and iPads are now commonplace tech items in many households. Their benefits over larger heavier computers are many, but I often find a few common challenges new users have when they buy one: What do the icons mean? So, in this article, I present some of the more common icons that you will see on iPad and other types of Tablet, and a brief explanation of their meaning!
iPad: Box, with pointing arrow, either upwards or to the right. Depending on the age of your iPad, you’ll see one of these two icons alot on various screens on iPad. This icon means ‘Share what you can see and pass it to another part of the iPad.’ The classic example is when you take a photo, you look at the photo and you touch the Share icon. You can pass the photo to Email, so you can email it, or Print, to pass the photo to the printer to print it. All sorts of things can be shared from one part of the iPad to another, so this icon shows up quite a bit. Also it’s used to bookmark pages in the web browser, Safari. All Tablets: Arrows pointing round Android Tablets: Three circles joined in a circle. This means ‘refresh’ what together with lines. you see force the table to update the display This is exactly the same ‘Share’ concept, but on so its not missing information.
