ooking over the Edge

Where does the time go. It seems like only yesterday I was trying to ignore the sunny days and the call of the summer attractions to concentrate on producing the Town Guide. Now the Christmas adverts are starting to emerge. Never mind only 3 months to the shortest day. Since the last issue in August I have appointed a new Sales Manager. Penny Crout has joined us and is the first point of contact for advertisers and general enquiries. I look after the editorial, financial and distribution end of Edge Publications. Over the next few weeks Penny will be in touch with the advertisers to make sure we are doing what you want and helping to promote your business to its best advantage. You will be pleased to know that she is much less grumpy than me! SuPER SEPTEmbER

Super September September is just such an amazing month for Wellington. As summer draws to a close, and the first signs of Autumn become too apparent, the children return to school and the nights draw in, the town, instead of feeling sorry for itself puts on a party. From the Flower Show to the Food Festival, the World Welly Boot Throwing Championship to the Carnival it is a fun month. But it doesn’t just happen. Hundreds of people give up a great deal of their time to ensure that thousands more have a good time. The organisers work throughout the year to ensure their event looks effortless whilst

coping with the funding issues and bureaucratic but necessary requirements of health and safety. While the committees are the face of the events and take the brickbats and plaudits, none of their visions would become reality without the unsung heroes who man barriers, put up gazebos and clear up the rubbish at the end of the day. As a nation we are very lucky to have so many people who are willing to give up their time to make the country a better place. Thanks to Terry Milton for the photos - another volunteer.

WHAT’S WHAT’S ON ON CHURCHES TOGETHER IN WELLINGTON & DISTRICT Isabel Ward: email: mantlestreet@sky.com Tel: 01823 667456

Representatives from all the churches will be meeting on Wednesday 14th October at the United Reformed Church hall. We welcome anyone else wishing to support our work in the town with a coffee/tea at 7.00pm. Our Guest Speaker is Alan Dixon, the new County Ecumenical Officer, recently retired from a vocation with the Salvation Army. Members of the churches have been asked to join with others in becoming mentors for students at Courtfield School. Details about this important work are available through Somerset Community Foundation website: somersetcf.org.uk. We shall also discuss how church members can offer more care for our increasing number of lonely and elderly poorly residents – mindful we are numbered amongst them! On 18th October at 6.00pm in the Baptist Church we shall come together for a Service of Care in the Community, at which the address will be given by Rev. John Rothwell, lead Chaplain for the Somerset NHS Partnership. Thinking towards Christmas, we are planning a Knitted Sheep Nativity Project, so that the real meaning of Christmas can be better understood by our families and shoppers, who are invited to go in search of a knitted sheep in our local shops. But first we need lots of knitted sheep – patterns available to our knitters chatting in clubs and groups! More details available from mantlestreet@sky.com or telephone Isabel on 667456. The Wellington Silver Band will be playing for the Carol Concert in the open air on Wednesday 9th December at 6.30 on the United Reformed church green. We shall sing carols around the pubs on Friday 18th December from 7.30pm more details of which pubs to follow, with proceeds going to charity. We are also hoping to provide a Lunch on Christmas Day in the United Reformed church hall. This will depend on those willing to cook for a number of guests! If this is something you would like to do for those not with family or friends on Christmas Day, please contact : Isabel at mantlestreet@sky.com. Many cooks and helpers will make this a happy day for us all.

Celebration of Light The Celebration of Light has now become an established part of the Town’s Christmas celebrations. It will start again this year to coincide with the Christmas Light Switch On. The Council have shown its support by making a grant to the Wellington Quakers to help fund the 2015 event which is to be held in the gardens of the Quaker Meeting House. Councillors agreed that the event was a brilliant event that was both well attended and appreciated in the town.

museum & Local History DUKE TO VISIT WELLINGTON? Colin Spackman of the Wellington Museum and Local History Society has thanked the Council for its continued support. The Society have worked to improve access to its material and expanded the Waterloo 200 display. He said that 28 September 2019 would mark the 200th anniversary since the first Duke of Wellington had visited the town. He suggested that the current Duke be invited to visit Wellington on that anniversary. The Council thought this was a great idea and would be inviting the Duke as suggested. ROAD TO BE NAMED AFTER H.M. THE QUEEN? Mr Spackman also referred to the milestone when H.M The Queen became the Country’s longest serving monarch. He suggested that a new street in the town be named after H.M. Queen Elizabeth II to mark the occasion. The Council thought that this was a fitting way to mark this anniversary and have put forward the suggestion of naming a street after H.M. The Queen.

TTT Tim’s Technology Tips Windows 10 - Should you buy it?

Articles by Tim Finch 07514 059313 www.Taunton.IT

Windows 10 (Win 10 from here on) is in the shops from July 2015. Nearly 3 years earlier Windows 8 came out, which was not liked very much by those in the technology world. So, is Win 10 any better? My opnion, having played with it a little in advance - as many technologists have - is... possibly! Some noticable improvements and it certainly works better than Win 8, looks more like Win 7 and has a lot less confusing on-screen actions. The Start menu has returned, whilst keeping the new ‘Apps’ feature of Win 8, but now on the desktop. You can talk to Win 10 also with ‘Cortana’. The ground breaking news, though, is that for people with Win 7 and 8 computers, Microsoft are offering Win 10 as a free upgrade, if you do it in the first year before Aug 2016. On the face of it this is a great offer. However some older laptops will need other kinds of paid upgrades to cope, and probably need a factory reset style installation - which means asking an IT person to help, so whilst Win 10 itself might be free, there may be a cost to upgrade your PC. Win 10 will also come on new machines, of course, so those still hanging on to Win XP really should now consider upgrading. When new versions of Windows come out, its often wise to wait 6 months (i.e. Dec 2015 ish) - if you’re not in a rush - before buying so that any bugs and probems can be ironed out. So, should you upgrade? Win 8 users - Yes - and soon - certainly within the year when it is free. Win 8 PCs/Laptops will run Win 10 fine. The sooner Win 8 is forgotten, the better. Upgrade. Win 7 users - Tricky. Win 7 will be supported for security fixes until 2020. If your Win 7 machine is working well, my advice is ‘stick with it for now’. Some Win 7 machines will run Win 10 fine, so the free upgrade may make sense. But get good advice - the decision is on a case-by-case basis in my view. Win Vista/XP users - You’ll need a new machine, so if you’re ready to buy, come late summer/autumn - and were avoiding Win 8 (wise) - Win 10 is finally your answer to move off older versions!

Protection Insurance‌ ZZZZzzzzzz You have probably heard of Protection Insurance in the past and, like many, thought it is either not for you or it is too boring to concentrate on right now! The truth is you probably have some already if you have a life insurance policy but you may be risking your future wealth if you don’t know what other options you have to help protect that money in the future, so here is a quick round up so you can judge for yourself.

For the individual: Income Protection Insurance Concerned that you may not be able to work due to accident, sickness or unemployment? Set your mind at rest with an income protection policy, which will pay you a regular income. Mortgage Protection Insurance Protecting your mortgage payments against accident, sickness or unemployment is increasingly important. It is also worth reviewing your policy to check if the protection you have is still the right one for you. Life Cover & Life Assurance Life cover is essential, especially if you have family. You can start whenever you want but its best to seek advice on which cover is best for you. Policies include pay out on a certain date or when you die, whichever comes first and others that pay a lump sum if you die before a set date. Critical Illness Insurance This is a long-term insurance policy, generally designed to pay a lump sum on the diagnosis of certain life-threatening or debilitating (but INDEPENDENT not fatal) conditions. You can use the pay out FINANCIAL to pay for medical treatment, your mortgage or PLANNING anything else you need.

TRAVEL

Escape to the Indian Ocean ……

Offering year round sunshine, fine sandy beaches and luxurious accommodation, Indian Ocean holidays are a dream destination. As well as beautiful beaches, Mauritius has a fascinating diverse cultural heritage and a holiday in the Seychelles Archipelagos offers the perfect tropical island getaway. Miles Morgan Travel in Taunton specialises in holidays in the Indian Ocean and has staff with first-hand knowledge of this stunning area. We cater for families, couples and many wedding and honeymoons and can create a tailormade package to suit you. It is not surprising that Mark Twain once remarked that God modelled Heaven on Mauritius, because this jewel of the Indian Ocean is truly paradise on earth. It is a relatively small island, bathing in the hot tub of the warm Capricorn Sea, in the coral reef belt of the Indian Ocean. Mauritius offers golden, powder-soft beaches embraced by coral reefs and fringed with exotic coconut palms bordering translucent sea lagoons. There are also dramatic mountain ranges, tropical forests, tumbling waterfalls, gently swaying fields of sugar cane, chic hotels, sophisticated cuisine, superb water sports and charming cosmopolitan people with infectious smiles. When you consider that Mauritius also offers a tropical allyear-round climate and superlative service levels, you will appreciate the wisdom of Mark Twain’s words. Imagine paradise and you will imagine the Seychelles. This archipelago of 115 stunningly beautiful islands is located 1600km off the East coast of Africa and 4º south of the Equator. Deserted, pristine dazzlingwhite beaches, turquoise lagoons, gentle lapping waves, swaying emerald green coconut palms, warm tropical breezes, lush forests, indigenous birds and stunningly colourful underwater life are just a few of the attractions. Each of the islands are unique and exhibit an individual charm, personality and atmosphere of their own. Island-hopping is the best way to explore. Take a day excursion to one of the many inner granite islands or enjoy a stay at one of the exotic island hideaway resorts. FINGER ON THE PuLSE

Finger on the Pulse by Councillor Andrew Govier

I hope that every reader has had a good summer and enjoyed many of the events that take place in the town. The concerts organised by the Friends of Wellington Park; the Proms in the Park; the carnival; the flower show; the food fair; the Howard Road event organised by Churches Together and the Street Pastors; and the Welly Boot Day were all extremely successful. Once again, I think we are really fortunate that so many people put so much time and effort into organising these for the enjoyment of others. Well done and thanks to all concerned! One of the features of any summer is the exam results that the young people of the town and staff in all our schools work so hard to achieve. Once again this year, they appear to have done an excellent job and good results have been achieved. Behind these headlines, there are a multitude of individual stories and challenges faced. I am delighted that to help with these there is an important initiative being conceived in the town which will help young people and their families over the coming years. The first is a project mentoring project at Court Fields School which will provide around 40 of the school’s 700 students with mentors. These mentors, members of the local community, will regularly meet with individual pupils to support them through their school lives. The project is being run by Somerset Community Foundation and they are still looking for a few more mentors. If you are interested, then please contact Jenny Perez on 01749 344949 to discuss what is involved. There are no specific skills, other than being a good listener, and full training will be provided. The promotion of health and wellbeing is very important at any age and I am pleased that the County Council has recently announced that each of their councillors will have another £5k to distribute to local organisations this year. The money has to be spent on projects that promote health and wellbeing. If any reader knows of a group that they think would benefit from this type of grant, then please get them to contact me using the contact details below. I was sad to hear of the closure of the Green Dragon pub over the summer. Many thanks to all the publicans and staff who worked so hard to keep the pub going over the years. We all know that the pub trade is struggling at the moment and trends are changing in the way people socialise. I would very much like to see the building retained as a community asset, whether it will ever reopen as a traditional pub has to be in doubt, but I genuinely think that it could be turned into a useful facility for the town. The accommodation and other areas could be utilised to meet specific needs in the town and its central location would be a real bonus. There are major changes taking place at Wellington Youth Centre this autumn following an independent review that has taken place over the summer. The centre has been closed for a few weeks over the summer to allow the process to be completed. The contract to deliver youth services has been awarded to Somerset Rural Youth Project and it is planned that the centre will open very soon. This group have a good track record of delivering youth services throughout Somerset. They have put forward an exciting set of proposals to work with the local community to continue the delivery of high quality youth services that have been the hallmark of services at Wellington over the years. I would like to thank Ben Orszag-Land and all the other staff who have delivered these through hard work and determination over the last decade or so. If you would like to raise any issues with me about matters contained in the article, or other concerns, then please feel free to ring me on 667589 or email me on ajgovier@somerset.gov.uk

RECYCLING Wellington residents boost recycling levels in succesful trial By nick Cater who is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset. A successful trial of extra kerbside collection materials and new containers helped hundreds of households in Wellington boost recycling levels and cut the amount of rubbish sent to landfill. Analysis of the “Recycle More” trials that took place over several months in Wellington and Taunton last year showed that adding four new collection materials, offering a choice of new containers and changing some collection frequencies saw “dry” – non-food – recycling rates jump by up to 29%. And, as residents were able to recycle more, rubbish levels fell by up to 27%. In Wellington’s Recycle More trial, hundreds of homes had plastic pots, tubs and trays for food – such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and fruit trays – included in their kerbside collections, along with beverage cartons, small electrical items and household batteries. These extra materials were added to the existing paper, card, glass bottle and jars, cans, aerosols, plastic bottles, foil, textiles, clothes, shoes, and vehicle batteries. To take the extra Recycle More materials, families had a choice of containers, from clear plastic sacks and extra standard recycling boxes to reusable large blue woven plastic bags. Both the new materials and choice of containers proved popular with residents, especially as the trials helped them significantly reduce what was left in their rubbish bin or black sacks. One aspect of the Recycle More trials for some residents was changing the frequency of recycling to every two weeks or rubbish collections to every three weeks. In Wellington, food waste recycling and refuse collections were unchanged but all the “dry” recycling was picked up every fortnight from homes in the Longforth Road, Holyoake Street and Waterloo Road areas. Once these changes were underway, the lower frequency recycling and rubbish collections attracted approval ratings of between 82% and 86% if they were coupled with having the extra recycling materials that left rubbish bins far emptier. While the Recycle More new materials offered little reduction in rubbish tonnage – in the average rubbish bin, pots, tubs and trays are just 4% of the weight, cartons 1%, and small electricals 1% - they can occupy a large volume within waste collections. Typical comments in post-trial surveys included: “I was amazed how little rubbish was left once all the additional materials were recycled.” Another person added: “Very impressed with how recycling plastic reduces the bulk of the rubbish.” While the kerbside Recycle More trials ended belore Christmas, a legacy is that both Wellington and Taunton Recycling Centres have a long running trial underway, adding plastic pots, tubs and trays to the 30+ materials they already accept, including those household batteries, electrical items and beverage cartons. The Welly Effect was also seen in a jump in food waste recycling in trials across Taunton Deane and elsewhere. In the Wellington food waste trials, stickers stuck on their rubbish bin reminded householders not to send the wrong materials to landfill. That message in large red letters - “no food waste, please; remember to use your food recycling bin” - helped boost recycling of food by 20%, while combining both the sticker and Recycle More collection changes led in some areas to food waste recycling rising by 45% or more. Clearly, simple changes in materials collected, available containers, pick-up frequency and the messages people see bring major changes in how much residents in Wellington recycle and how little they send to landfill via their rubbish bins. Once again, Wellington is offering a powerful voice as discussions get underway about how to create new and improved waste services that are practical, sustainable and cost effective by helping people waste less, recycle more and save money. Those views and the impact of the trials in raising recycling rates and cutting the rubbish sent to landfill are all going into the research and analysis essential to create better waste services while cutting costs in Somerset from 2016/17. no decisions have yet been taken as these issues are complex, costly and far reaching. That said, it remains the case that that even without any extra items or changes in services, Wellington residents could cut the weight of their rubbish bins by more than half and save millions, just by recycling existing materials fully. Composition analysis shows that 50% of the average Somerset rubbish bin is food or other materials that can be recycling in existing kerbside containers, from cans and bottles to cardboard and clothes, while another 10% of the bin could be taken to recycling sites. Landfilling Somerset’s rubbish costs council tax payers £12 million a year. For more information about the trials and their results, as well as kerbside services and recycling sites, check out the Somerset Waste Partnership website at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

FEATuRE

How To Stay Healthy This Autumn Autumn is the season when warm summer days become shorter, and the leaves on the trees begin to change. It is a time for us to begin to wind down after the excesses of summer. As the weather begins to cool we should think about making changes to our diet and lifestyle to suit this change in climate. Autumn In Traditional Chinese Medicine In Chinese Medicine, autumn is associated with the energy of the lungs. It is the time we move from the external nature of summer to the internal nature of autumn. It is a good time to finish up any projects started earlier in the year and enjoy the results of our hard work. It is a time of Ô letting goÕ , so it is good to be mindful and let go of anything we may be holding on to so we can make room for new experiences that will help us learn and grow. Learn To Breathe Deeply Deep breathing is a very good way to strengthen the lungs. Breathing is something we do without thinking, but most of us don't breathe deeply enough; this can affect our memory, energy levels and immune system. When we breathe deeply we are flooding our cells and brains with much needed oxygen that is vital to all of the body’s processes. Deep Breathing Exercise Sit somewhere quiet for a few minutes: ✴ Breathe in through your nose, all the way down into your belly taking in as much air as possible ✴ Hold this breath for up to a count of 5

Exhale through your mouth from the very bottom of your lungs until they are completely empty Do this 3 times, 3 times a day

Eat Warming Foods For Autumn At this time of year, as the weather begins to cool, it is a good idea to eat less cooling foods, like salads and raw foods. Soups and stews are good warming foods as they support the digestive system and are easier to digest. Warming foods include:

Garlic - Ginger - Onion - Cabbage - Radish Asparagus - Broccoli - Celery - Turnip Sweet Potato - Carrot - Parsnips - Pumpkin Squash - Apples - Plums - Pears - Eggs Brown Rice - Black Pepper - Mustard Stay Hydrated Dry skin and rashes tend to show up in winter. Drink plenty of water and keep your skin hydrated with a good quality body lotion or oil. Staying hydrated also helps to regulate the digestion. Stay Warm Even on sunny autumnal days there can be a cool wind. Protect the neck and chest/lung areas by wearing a scarf. Autumn is a wonderful time of year to take walks outside and enjoy the changes in nature. EnjoyÉ Maria Chrysostomou is a reflexology practitioner at Holistics, Wellington
