Wellington Waste Services

With the switch to Recycle More kerbside collections, Wellington’s residents are taking full advantage of the opportunity to transform far more of their waste into new products and packaging. They can also now focus on reducing the waste they create, reusing all they can, and recycling yet more materials via supermarkets and the high street. Recycle More collections take these materials:

• Recycle box 1 (usually green). Cartons/Tetra Paks (rinse, squash, tops back on) glass bottles and ars (rinse, tops back on). • Recycle box 2 (usually black). Paper and cardboard (separated atten, tear up card). • Bright Blue Bag. Household and food rigid plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles (remove film covers, rinse, nest/stack/squash, tops back on bottles) cans (rinse and, if safe, crush) aerosols (empty, caps and nozzles on) foil (rinse, scrunch). • Kerbside food waste bin. All food, raw and cooked, fresh and off . • Small tied plastic bag (not black sack). Household batteries. • Untied carrier-sized bag. Small electrical items (no TVs/monitors). • Tied bag (not black sack). Clothes and shoes good enough to wear again (no textiles or padded items). For kerbside pick-ups

• Containers out by 7am on collection days and no earlier than the night before. • Use only official waste containers order recycle containers via My Waste Services at somersetwaste.gov.uk. • All containers belong to Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) and cannot be bought or sold. If moving, leave containers (except garden waste bin, if staying in Somerset). • Collections after bank holidays may change check all days via My Collection Day at somersetwaste.gov.uk, SWP social media or the SWP e-newsletter. • Lots of any material Options if you wish and if you have time and transport or help, drop it all off at a recycle site, or if you wish and if safe to store, put it out over time.

Food waste

Do not put food waste in your rubbish. Add all food waste and any paper kitchen towel, but no other materials, to the lockable kerbside food bin. Line the kitchen caddy with newspaper or use either compostable liners or compostable carrier bags (with looped seedling certification). Store away from heat and sun. Somerset’s anaerobic digester recycles Wellington’s food into electricity and agricultural fertiliser. Garden and bulky waste

At-cost charged-for fortnightly garden waste collections take plants, grass and weeds hedge and tree prunings (up to 15cm thick) straw or sawdust (if animal bedding, only from vegetarian domestic pets). It is suspended for one collection over Christmas. At-cost charged-for bulky waste collections take furniture, white goods and other items. Order paid-for collections via My Waste Services at somersetwaste.gov.uk. Rubbish

Rubbish is collected every three weeks. Only rubbish inside the wheeled bin with lid closed is collected. If a wheeled bin is unsuitable, up to four black sacks will be taken. Use the rubbish bin for household waste that cannot be recycled or composted, such as vacuum cleaner contents, pet litter, disposable nappies and adult hygiene products. Do not put these in rubbish

• Anything you can recycle, including food waste and garden waste. • Hot ash (leave to cool) rubble, earth, stones. • Hypodermic needles. • Business waste. • Bulky items. • Engine oil, paint, chemicals. Depending on the space inside and outside their homes for waste containers, those with communal collections will see improvements this year in what they can recycle, and will receive detailed letters well ahead of any changes. Wellington Recycling Centre at Poole Brickworks, Nynehead, TA21 9HW, is open five days a week Wednesday-Thursday-Friday 9am-6pm summer (April-September) and 9am-5pm winter (October-March) Saturday and Sunday 9am-4pm. It is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. As well as a wide range of materials for recycling, Wellington Recycling Centre accepts commercial waste (for businesses, charges apply) residual waste for disposal and for energy-from-waste vehicle parts (residents only, charges apply). It does not accept ammunition, explosives, fireworks, medicines, mercury, petrol, diesel, roofing felt containing bitumen, asbestos or plasterboard. • Order any recycle container free. • Arrange paid-for garden waste collections. • Log any missed collection after 7pm. • Pay for asbestos/plasterboard disposal. • Send comments about services. • Order paid bulky waste pick-up. • Sort your clinical/assisted collections. • Get a recycle site van/trailer permit. • Request removal of a waste container.
