Holidays are coming! It has been a great year for the Wellington Edge and the Town Guide under the new branding of Edge Publications. The magazines have increased not only in size but also in quality. Although the Town continues to grow we still deliver to every home and business - over 7000 copies - the only publication that can boast that, as well as having pick-up points in all local villages and towns. To achieve a high quality publication requires a great deal of effort from a lot of people and my thanks go to Andrew Govier, Colin Spackman and Nick Cater who produce regular editorials, the 1st WellingtonScouts and my other distributors, my advertisers and of course the many readers who tell me that they enjoy and value the Edge. May I wish you all a very happy Christmas. Advertising General Enquiries

Christmas Lights Switch On - 28 November

The lights have been going up since the beginning of November and the town is being prepped for the festive season. The Light Switch On this year took place on Saturday 28th November 2015. The town’s tree has once again kindly donated by Langford Lakes and is a great addition to the town centre. Shopkeepers have decorated their windows for the shop window competition judged this year by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Wellington.

Town Council Grants Since the last newsletter Wellington Town Council have given grants to the following: Genesis Youth Theatre: £750 – a contribution towards the cost of replacing tab tracks, curtains, costumes and light and sound equipment used by the group at the Arts Centre in Eight Acre Lane. The money will also help toward providing specialist make-up workshops Wellington Cricket Club: £1,050 – a contribution to assist with its successful series of winter coaching sessions for the young people of the area. These sessions meant young people could continue the sport throughout the winter months and enabled growth and development of the club.

Christmas Free Car Parking Taunton Deane Borough Council have granted Wellington free car parking on the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas. This maintains the tradition of goodwill in an effort by TDBC to help the local economy. Charges in Longforth Road, North Street and South Street Car Parks will be waived for the whole day on 28th November as well as 5th, 12th and 19th December 2015, following a tradition established now over a number of years.

TOWN COUNCIL

Wellington Remembers The Mayor of Wellington Cllr Janet Lloyd, Councillors and Officers joined the Remembrance Sunday Parade through the town followed by the service in the park. A wreath was laid on behalf of the Town Council at the war memorial. It was fantastic to see the efforts made by the community to attend this Royal British Legion event and remember those that had fallen for our country. The town fell silent on November 11th at 11am to mark Armistice Day. The Mayor of Wellington, Councillors and Officers accompanied by Royal British Legion and Wellington School CCF representatives and standard bearers, paraded into the town centre. Shopkeepers, school pupils and shoppers came out and lined the streets to mark the 2 minutes silence.

Section 106 spend options Alison North, Community Leisure Manager and Debbie Arscott, Community Leisure Officer Taunton Deane Borough Council presented a short paper on the S106 spend options/ proposals for outdoor recreation in Wellington at the Town Council’s November meeting. A number of preferred options were identified including the possible provision of a Petanque Court, outdoor table tennis tables, outdoor gym equipment, picnic benches and seating and a storage container as part of the Greenway Road project. It appeared that the cost of these proposals could be met from the S106 funds that were available. The TDBC officers would consider the views of the Town Council when actioning any spending.

Litter Bins Taunton Deane Borough Council have started work on the litter bins in the town with the aim to replace all of the post mounted bins in the town with new free standing bins.

Goodbye to PCSO Pearl Hine With great sadness the town has said goodbye to PCSO Pearl Hine who has now left Wellington to join Devon and Cornwall Constabulary as a Police Constable. The Mayor presented Pearl with a bouquet of flowers and thanked her for all she had done for the town including her involvement in local events, Dreamscheme initiatives and Wellington One. Somerset County Council salts over 1,400km (870 miles) of its roads in anticipation of frost, snow and ice. This is approximately 21% of its entire road network, as shown September 2015 on the map. The M5, A303 and the A36 are maintained and treated by the Highways England.

mat.

What we do Road salting is carried out in order to assist the safe movement of highway users in conditions of snow and ice. Resources are not available to treat all roads. Criteria have been used that meet national guidelines to enable the Pre-Salting Network to be defined. This has been done to ensure a consistent approach across the county and achieve a responsible balance between cost and level of service. The criteria used to define the routes are listed below in order of importance. 1. Strategic and County Routes 2. Freight Routes 3. Links to Emergency Locations 4. Links to Adjoining Counties 5. Links to Major Settlements 6. Links to Settlements above 500 feet 7. Links to Urban/Rural Schools (Major) In some parishes salt bins are located at key points to encourage self-help. We provide salt at these places on the understanding that it is used for highway purposes.

When are roads salted? Salting is carried out when road surface temperatures are predicted to drop below zero and frost or ice is expected

8

to form on the road. Normally, precautionary salting is carried out WWW.SOMERSET.GOV.UK in the evening or early morning. However, during severe weather conditions we may have to salt at other times. If frost follows rain in the early hours, or freezing occurs unexpectedly, there may not be enough time to salt the entire priority network before the morning rush hour. Motorists, therefore, should drive with caution and not assume that salting has been carried out.

What we can do d Carry out precautionary salting on the pre-salting network when there is a risk of ice or snow. d Clear the routes of snow accumulation in priority order. d Keep the public informed through the media as far as possible.

Can I clear snow myself? There is no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement outside your home or from public spaces. d If you clear snow and ice yourself, be careful - don’t make the pathways more dangerous by causing them to refreeze. d Clear the snow or ice early in the day d Use salt or sand – not water d Take care where you move the snow d Offer to clear your neighbour’s path For further information on the Snow Code please go to:https://www.gov.uk/clear-snow-road-path-cycleway or contact us.

Waste Services in winter Severe weather can delay or halt kerbside recycling and rubbish collections, and limit recycling site opening. Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) will try to maintain usual services, if safe. If collections are disrupted, crews will try to return to collect missed recycling or rubbish as soon as possible. Household recycling and rubbish can be taken to any recycling site, but check it is open before travelling. Please assist vulnerable neighbours. FINGER ON THE PULSE

Finger on the Pulse By Councillor Andrew Govier I really can’t believe that I am writing my contribution for the Christmas edition of the Edge! Once again this year, there was excellent support for the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance services. It was

so impressive to see the large numbers who joined the procession down through the town from Wellington School and the huge crowds in the park. It was a really encouraging turnout and the service was, once again, very moving. It was particularly touching this year that some of the prayers were read by Bradley and Nadine, pupils from Rockwell Green (C of E) Primary School. The school does a fantastic job in supporting the remembrance process by putting flowers on the war graves in Wellington Cemetery every month. Many thanks to all concerned. These are very difficult times for local government and both Somerset County and Taunton Deane Borough Councils face huge cuts in their support from the government next year. Sadly, this will mean further reductions in the services that are available in the town. In order to offset these reductions the Town Council is holding a budget planning meeting to look at ways in which we can look to support existing services and in some cases introduce new ones. In recent months we have agreed to pay for the toilets at Longforth Road to remain open after Taunton Deane planned to close them. It is clear that in the future it is likely that if we want certain services to continue we will have to pay for them from funds we raise in the town. On a more encouraging note,TDBC have agreed that there will be free parking in the town on the Saturdays leading up to Christmas. We hope that people will try to do as much shopping as they possibly can in the town this year.We have a great variety of shops in the town and with a number of new ones opening this year there are lots of opportunities to buy your Christmas presents locally. One other thing to look out for this year is the Knitted Sheep trail! Churches Together in Wellington are planning to place knitted sheep in shops around the town and encourage children to find them all and complete a quiz sheet that also tells them the Christmas story. As December approaches, we look forward to celebrating the birth of Jesus with various events in the town. The churches throughout the town will be organising many services and looking to provide help and support to the vulnerable. I am very pleased that this year there will be a Christmas lunch organised by local Christians for those who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day (see below). Anyone interested in attending should contact Isabel Ward on 01823 667456 before 10th December.Thank you to the organisers and all other people who will be working hard to look after our community over the holiday period. As we approach the end of the year it is good to reflect on all the positives there are about living in Wellington. We are very fortunate to live in a community that is generally very peaceful and pleasant to live in. When we see the tragedies that are occurring in other parts of the world, it puts some of our worries and challenges into perspective. I hope and pray that you and your family a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful 2016. If you would like to raise any issues with me about matters contained in the article or other concerns then please feel free to ring me on 667589 or email me on ajgovier@somerset.gov.uk . CHURCHES TOGETHER IN WELLINGTON & DISTRICT WELCOME YOU FOR A TRADITIONAL TURKEY LUNCH ON CHRISTMAS DAY, 25TH DECEMBER 2015 FOR THOSE ON THEIR OWN & NOT WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS ON CHRISTMAS DAY AT THE UNITED REFORMED CHURCH HALL, FORE STREET FROM 12.30 TO 3.00 PM NUMBERS ARE LIMITED TO 25 PLACES AT £5.00 PER PERSON, PAID IN ADVANCE. COMPETITION

YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2016 Having gained 1st, 2nd or 3rd places in the Wellington competition last year’s entries from Beech Grove Primary School and Wellington School won the Junior and the Senior competitions in the District competition (comprising the whole of Somerset with parts of Wiltshire and Dorset) in March. They were forwarded to compete in the National Rotary International Youth Photographic Competition for Great Britain and Ireland in July - a tremendous achievement. Winning photographs in the competition and runners up have also been used to illustrate pages in the ‘Edge’ (distributed to thousands of homes in Wellington and district), as well as in the Wellington Town Guide twice featuring on the cover. There are two themes for this year’s competition: OUR WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL. MY FAVOURITE NEIGBOURHOOD VIEW

(town, village, countryside)

If you would like to enter, and if you want your photograph to be considered for the regional and then national Rotary competitions, then you must put together a collection of THREE photographs on the FIRST THEME - OUR WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL. The second category is a local competition. The rules are the same, and you can enter photographs in just this, or in both the local as well as the national competition if you wish. There are three age groups: 1. Junior 7 - 10 years old

on 31st August 2015

2. Intermediate 11 - 13 years old

on 31st August 2015

3. Senior 14 - 17 years old

on 31st August 2015

Your age must be certified by your school teacher who must also certify that the photographs are your own work. Please submit just a maximum of THREE photographs per subject (i.e. SIX altogether). It would help if you could please send them to my email address below or post them to me on a disk. Entries for the regional and national competitions (Our World is Beautiful) must be of a quality that can be later printed on A4 paper. Could you please let me have entries by January 31st.

CHARITY & COMMUNITY Reaching the community in South West England Action on Hearing Loss is an extraordinary charity performing extraordinary things. Their mission is to change the lives of people who have hearing loss. Action on Hearing Loss – formerly the Royal National Institute for Deaf People – is the national charity helping people confronting deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss to live the life they choose. It enables people to take control of their lives and remove the barriers in their way, giving them support and care, developing technology and treatments and campaigning for equality. Since the charity’s foundation in 1911, it has grown to be the UK’s leading deafness charity, supporting more than a quarter of a million people each year and running the world’s largest donor-funded hearing research programme. Our work involves campaigning (for example our ‘Subtitle it’ campaign), lobbying (for example to protect NHS services by fighting cuts), providing a vast range of local services, training, products and equipment, and undertaking medical and technical research. The need The consequences of hearing loss can be devastating, with significant personal and social costs. The inability to understand conversations clearly often results in people avoiding social contact or withdrawing from activities they had previously enjoyed. It can lead to high levels of social isolation and mental ill health and older people with hearing loss who do not use hearing aids are more likely to report depression, anxiety, paranoia, emotional turmoil, and insecurity. “It is hard for someone who has not lost their hearing to imagine the feelings People with even mild hearing loss have nearly twice the chance of developing dementia as people with normal hearing. And of isolation and despair that can engulf someone who realises they are going deaf.” hearing loss has a significant impact on education and employment Ray, Action on Hearing Loss Member too. People who are severely or profoundly deaf are four times more likely to be unemployed than the general population. We know that around 10 million people in the UK are struggling with deafness, tinnitus or hearing loss. In the south west of England alone, it is estimated that around 970,000 people are suffering from some form of hearing loss. Research We’re working for a future where there are effective medical devices, treatments and cures for hearing loss and tinnitus. We want: • • • •

better diagnosis of hearing loss so that people receive best treatment, as soon as possible hearing aids and cochlear implants that work well in noisy situations – and can reproduce the rich quality of sound medicines to prevent hearing loss caused by age, noise, infections and exposure to ototoxic drugs cell, gene and drug-based therapies to fix the root causes of deafness – and restore hearing

treatment to silence tinnitus

Community Services for People with Hearing Loss As well as our national research and campaigning work, we provide a variety of local community services including hearing aid support, information provision, befriending, and sensory services. We aim to achieve a radically better quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing people. We are aiming to provide these services in every town across Somerset. We also provide care and support for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and who have a range of additional, complex needs including visual impairment, learning disability, mental illness, physical disability, autistic spectrum disorders, dementia, age-related frailty and cognitive impairment including acquired brain injury.

CHARITY & COMMUNITY How can you help? Due to lack of funding, Action on Hearing Loss has to turn away two out of three top-class research projects – that’s two too many. Also, our community presence across the south west isn’t as broad and consistent as we’d like it to be, but we have plans to grow these services. In order to do these things we need your help to raise funds. We have the experience, the expertise and the will to do it. Now we need the support of our south west community. Do you like organising fundraising events? “I felt that I had to retire when my deafness became noticeable, as Would you like to take part in local fundraising events? Or do you have leadership skills and could lead a team of local I didn’t feel that I was competent to continue with my job. Or are you retired or a professional seeking to use your valuable organizational work and life skills to share your expertise whilst gaining up-to-date knowledge of issues affecting people who are deaf have tinnitus or hearing loss? Whatever you are able to do, you will know that the money you raise is making a real difference to those who are deaf, have tinnitus or hearing loss. TTT Tim’s Technology Tips The tyranny of the Password!

Articles by Tim Finch 07514 059313 www.Taunton.IT

Who hasn’t breathed a groan when yet another screen asks you for your password, and you can’t remember what it is, or which one it is after? Whether you are a seasoned Windows PC user, or a relative newcomer with an iPad - the problem of passwords is a universal! So I thought I’d write a column on a few tips to inventing, managing and coping with passwords. One thing is for sure. You aren’t going to avoid using them! INVENTING The first problem is when you have to invent passwords. The challenge is between picking something that you can remember versus having a password that is considered, by the IT industry, to actually be quite ‘strong’ - i.e. it would take longer for the password to be guessed by anyone trying to hack it. All the advice says no dictionary words, no names, and no memorable dates and certainly not use the same password on all systems that need one. But we’ve all broken some, if not all, of those rules. Current advice is passwords should be 14 or so characters long. Include symbols, numbers and mixed case. Substituting numbers for similar looking letters can help. Making up nonsence, but pronouncable syllables, helps memory retention. So, m0lErp{5TeG)8af (‘Mol Erp Steg Baf’), for example, mixes that advice to make a strong(er) password than, say, Richard01. REMEMBERING The next challenge facing mankind is remembering the darn things. We’ve all written them down on backs of envelopes, but when there are lots of them, you quickly forget which password is for which service! Two ideas here for you. Firstly, if you have Microsoft Word, you can make a document with a strong password (to encrypt it) and then write down the name of each service (eg Google Account, Yahoo Email, Apple ID etc), with its username and password. Start a new page in the Word doc for the next account. Then, save the file with this one strong master password on it - which is done by going to File, Save As, Tools button, General Options. You only have to remember this one password, to open the file and see every other password. The second idea, if you have a mobile, is to use a special Password-Keeping App like Keeper, LastPass or 1Password. You type all the usernames and passwords into them, and, like the MS Word idea above, only have to remember the master password to find the actual password you want. Works well!

ARE MORTGAGE RATES READY TO RISE? Whilst Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England, has given various signals over the summer that rates might rise, economic data gathered each month has a bearing on when this will actually happen. As to the potential timing of the UK’s first rise since July 2007, Deputy Governor Ben Broadbent announced in an interview with the BBC in early August that the Bank won’t be issuing early warnings of any rate change. He commented that: “It would not just be impossible, it would be foolish to pre-announce some fixed date of interest rate changes.” So when the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee met in August no-one was surprised at its decision to maintain rates at 0.5%, but many had predicted that more members would vote in favour of a rise; in the event only one member did. However, at the press conference after wards Mark Carney reiterated that the timing of the next rate change was potentially getting nearer. What is clear is that if economic growth remains buoyant, the UK will have less need of very low interest rates to underpin the economy WHAT THIS MEANS FOR MORTGAGES Figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) showed that remortgage lending surged in June, up 34% year-on-year to £5.1 billion, as borrowers prepare for what could be the first change in base rate in over six years. According to the CML, if rates rise it will be a new experience for more than one million homeowners who have benefited from a prolonged period of time when rates were either falling or at 0.5%. The Bank has always maintained that when rises come, they will do so in small incremental steps. So, what do borrowers need to do in INDEPENDENT preparation, especially if their current mortgage FINANCIAL PLANNING deal is coming to an end shortly? Those who want extra security may want to opt for a fixed rate deal. Whilst tracker rates are cheap Our Wellington office is open and right now, they will be subject to rate changes specialising in Mortgages & Insurance when they arise. Those on standard variable rate mortgages often end up paying this rate BUY TO LET by default once their fixed or tracker deal has MEET THE TEAM come to an end. The problem here is that the FIRST TIME BUYERS rate can be changed by lenders at any time, RE-MORTGAGING without any change in the Bank of England rate as a trigger, and can rise (or fall) by more than COMMERCIAL Andrew Joanne any move in base rate. Govier Brown As ever, it pays to keep an eye on financial news, and to discuss matters with your mortgage adviser. They will be in regular touch with the marketplace and will be able to offer advice on what mortgage deal would work best for your financial circumstances.

CHARITY & COMMUNITY

WHERE - Combats Loneliness, Reduces Isolation and Encourages Friendship WHERE is a registered charity, based at the Northfield Centre, opposite the fire station in North Street,Wellington. It houses a Café, providing good home cooked food at an affordable price in a safe and friendly environment, and an Active Living Centre holding Courses, Activities and Events. The venues are adjacent to one another and both are open Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 4.00pm, with extra events on some week-ends and evenings. (See our website www. thewherecentre.org.uk for all dates and times.) The main aim of the organisation is to provide services to support adults with a disability or who have become isolated due to age, health condition or bereavement, and everything that is put on at the centre gives these individuals the opportunity to live a full and active social life and to integrate with the local community. 2015 has been a very busy year for the organisation. We have sourced funding to enable us to upgrade our computer suite, we have become registered as a UK Online Centre which gives us the ability to educate others on the mysteries of computing and in some cases can help individuals to get back into employment; we employed a driver for our mini bus to work alongside our volunteer drivers to increase the availability of our vehicles; we received funding to introduce an Information Centre which has leaflets on Health, Safety, Diet, Places to visit and much more and our Active Living Centre is now the base for Social Services ‘SOCIAL HUB’.WE have also introduced a Chiropody Service We will be holding presentations once a month on a variety of subjects, Health, Law, Diabetes, Diet, Exercise to name but a few, and Age UK is holding a monthly surgery, starting November26th from 10.00am until 12 noon, everyone welcome. Come along with your queries. But for all our activities and events, which range from Keep Fit, Art, Computers to Crib and Craft, please check out our website www.thewherecentre.org.uk Our research into the Health and Social Care Sector has shown us that there is a gap in the service provision for the younger adult and we are now looking at ways of filling this. If you are or know of a younger adult aged between 25 and 55 years who is feeling lonely and isolated and fed up with having to stay at home, give us a call or pop in and see us and tell us what you would like to do.WHERE will look at ways at providing a service to suit you and hopefully, others will join with you. To help us to encourage younger members to our centre, we have received funding to renovate the centre. We hope that with the new and younger look, new and younger individuals will want to come along and enjoy all that we have to offer. If you would like to know any more about WHERE and all that we do but are not into computers, giveD me, Barbara a call on 01823 665896 or pop along to the centre to meet me, have a cup of coffee and a chat. That first step is always the hardest, but everyone who comes to WHERE is friendly and will make you feel very welcome. Nissan X-TRAIL Stunning to look at and stunning to drive - this has the X-factor

I was delivering the Edge to Chelston Business Park and stopped to look around Wellington Motors’ showroom. I love cars, probably because I was brought up living above the garage where my father worked, so it is not unusual to see me eyeing up the bodywork on a garage forecourt. In fact I know very little about the technical aspects of cars so tend to judge them on looks, ease of driving , how many boxes of the Edge I can get in the boot, comfort and whether they have the “wow” factor. The latter is hard to define as I like cars that look good and turn heads, that are fun to drive but also have every possible gadget. - I am a gadget man! While looking around Wellington Motors I was bowled over by the stunning looks of the new X-Trail (wow factor 1). Having previously owned an X-Trail and also written reviews on Nissan cars in the past, the Sales Manager, Andy Bowrah, well known locally, asked if I would like to borrow it to do a review on this latest model. Try and stop me I thought. Having borrowed it for a day with permission to go anywhere, I was able to enjoy myself. I mentioned that the X-Trai looks stunning and is, in my view, one of the few big cars that look great in white although Nissan have a whole new range of innovative colours including a dark metallic green which with the black leather seats makes it look really classy. Nissan have moved away from the boxy shape of the old X-Trail and have given this a sleek, modern look which is frankly on a par with vehicles twice its price. Packed with “boys’ toys” (wow factor 2) with features that range from the general comfort elements most of us want in a modern car to high level safety features that protect the passengers and allow the driver to “eat up the miles” without strain, backache or stress. All round visibility is excellent and with the 360 degree cameras and movement detection facility the driver can manouvre with confidence. The automatic parking feature allows both bay and parallel parking and makes parking easy even in the smallest of spaces, although it does takes a bit of nerve to take your hands off the wheel and trust it to steer for you when you use it for the first time. The high driving position is brilliant for local country roads as visibility and road holding helps the driver anticipate approaching traffic and conditions. The brochure say “the intuitive all mode 4WD constantly monitors conditions and adjusts the balance of power between front and rear wheels for best traction”. I have no idea what that means but although I didn’t get a chance to go “off-road” as quite a lot of my test was in very wet conditions, I used the 4WD auto mode and felt very safe even at speed round muddy country lanes. Longer runs are helped by Cruise Control and the speed limiter helps to keep you legal - both are standard throughout the range and in my view are must have gadgets. The couple of seconds you have “on brake” for hill starts is extremely useful as is the push-button handbrake once I got used to driving away with the handbrake on! Similarly the lane departure warning system and “blind spot” warning are massive innovations - the gadgets do not stop there but I felt they weren’t just for show but real safety or comfort features. The 7inch touchscreen for the satellite navigation, dab radio and bluetooth controls was clear and easy to use with great sound quality. I do get fed up with sat nav that requires a degree to set up and a PHD to cancel it when you know where you are - this is a sophisticated but straightforward system. The gadgets score a wow factor 3. Congratulations How many boxes of The Wellington Edge can the X-Trail carry? The boot area (or cargo space as they call it in the trade) to Wellington Motors on their recent award is massive even when configured in the 7 seat version and very flexible for odd shape loads and providing hidden of the Nissan Global Award presented to only the very best compartments for security, incidentally there is so much legroom for passengers that three adult passengers in the dealers over the Globe and recognises excellence in Sales, Service and rearcan enjoy long journeys in comfort without the front seat passengers having to compromise their own comfort. Customer Care and is measured on a continuous basis. Having spent a day trying the Nissan X-Trail in heavy traffic, around the town, on country roads and on longish motorway journeys I was surprised to find that I achieved about 46mpg for the combined journey, a bit less than the book quotes but then it is a new engine still bedding in and I was a little heavier on the throttle than I would have been if I was paying for the fuel. The motorway cruising was an impressive 51mpg and around the town about 38mpg. If you are looking for a large versatile, but economical car that doesn’t compromise on comfort and safety and has the “wow factor”,

then why not go and see Andy and his team or call them today on 01823667511

BEAUTY & HEALTH

So what is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is the use of plant based medicines to restore and maintain health. It is the oldest form of medicine in the world, with over 80% of the world’s population using it as their only form of medicine (WHO statistic). In the UK, herbal medicine is often seen as a ‘complementary’ medicine, as it can be used safely alongside orthodox medicine. Many orthodox medicines in use today originated from medicinal plants, for example aspirin from willow bark, and digitalis from foxglove. Medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years for health and nutrition, and modern scientific research is now starting to explain how that works. For example, valerian has been shown to improve sleep in several studies and is now available to buy over the counter as an alternative to sleeping tablets. Herbal medicine can also be as simple as a soothing cup of chamomile tea or a dock leaf rubbed on a nettle sting. Just as we know that herbs can be effective, they also need to be used safely. It is important to seek professional advice before taking herbs to ensure that they are right for you and do not interact with any medications you may be taking, I recommend consulting a medical herbalist. What conditions do herbalists often see?  Coughs, colds and allergic conditions  Skin problems (such as eczema, acne and psoriasis)  Stress and anxiety  Headaches  Sleep problems  Fatigue and low energy  Circulation problems  Digestive and bowel problems  Muscular aches and pains  Urinary problems  Gynaecological problems (such as PMS, painful and heavy periods, PCOS and fertility issues) As medical herbalists we must complete a degree in herbal medicine, covering anatomy and physiology, plant biochemistry and pharmacology, as well as orthodox medical diagnosis. We look at all aspects of your health before recommending and dispensing an individual prescription. As well as consultations I also run workshops (from my clinic in North Street, Wellington) and give talks on winter remedies, natural cream making, remedies for children and many more. I also run free medicinal plant walks across Somerset from April to October. For more information visit my website www.lauracarpenter.co.uk. If you are interested in coming along to a consultation bring this advert with you to get 20% off your first consultation or workshop, call 07946150721 to book.

RECYCLING

Plan ahead for a great, low-waste Christmas

By Nick Cater. Nick is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset. “Spread the load” is the advice for those who live in and around Wellington to avoid waste problems during a bumper festive season with plenty of Christmas changes to kerbside collections. To avoid uncollected materials, residents are urged to: • Check the changed Christmas collection dates below and plan how to deal with delayed pick-ups. • Shift pre-Christmas rubbish or recycling well before the holidays through your kerbside collections or go to any recycling site. • Sort and squash dry recycling (except aerosols and glass) so nothing gets left behind because the truck is full. • Store extra rubbish or recycling for later collections, or sort it in advance and take it all to a recycling site (earlier is less busy except late Monday opening). Do not let rubbish and recycling build up; shift it fast before Christmas – especially all that cardboard and other packaging – so you have space for festivities and fewer waste worries, especially if weather looks set to hamper collections. After Christmas and New Year, use the space in your boxes and bins, but either store the rest to put out over several collections or take it all to a recycling site. All recycling sites will be open on their standard schedules – including Taunton and four other bigger sites open 8am-4pm seven days a week – except for the usual closures on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Waste less and save: a great Christmas and New Year need not be costly in money or resources

So Wellington (Poole) Recycling Centre is open Mondays 8am7pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 8am-4pm; and Sundays 8am-1pm, and over Christmas and New Year will only close on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and then New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, as well as Thursday-Friday 7-8 January. Nothing alters for waste collections until Christmas Day, so kerbside collections around Wellington are unchanged on Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 December (Christmas Eve). But collections of rubbish and recycling will not take place on Christmas Day, Monday 28 December, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Instead, the schedule will be: • Collections due on Friday 25 December will be on Sunday 27 December • Monday 28 collections will be on Tuesday 29 • Tuesday 29 on Wednesday 30 December • Thursday 31 on Saturday 2 January • Friday 1 January collections will be made on Monday 4 January Then collections in week starting Monday 4 January will be one day later, including those due on Friday 8 January being made on Saturday 9 January. Clinical and assisted waste collections follow the same pattern, while garden waste pick-ups are suspended from Monday 28 December and resume from Monday 11 January on usual days. All recycling and rubbish collections resume from Monday 11 January on their usual days. Across the entire festive season, there are simple ways and easy shortcuts to save money, time and resources, as just a little planning can ensure that food, gifts and decorations are low-waste, low-cost and full of festive fun. Food – plan menus and check portion sizes to buy just what you need. Eat into your freezer before Christmas to make space for festive food, then freeze or reuse leftovers (great recipes on lovefoodhatewaste.com) and compost fruit and veg peelings, apple cores, tea bags, coffee grounds and egg shells. Gifts – invest in better-made presents that last, recycled or vintage gifts, or low-waste experiences, tokens or e-books. Ask early for wish lists: they mean no guesswork or unwanted gifts consigned to the bin.

RECYCLING Wrapping – avoid unrecyclable icky-sticky tape and anything plastic; try recycled wrapping paper or, for their soon-to-be favourite things, brown paper packages tied up with reusable string or ribbon. Cards – buy recycled cards or encourage the kids to make them from magazines, old cards or other craft items around the house, or use low or no-cost e-cards and festive texts. Decorations – mistletoe and other greenery offer the ultimate traditional look, cost little or nothing and can be composted later. Deck the halls with boughs of holly and other garden displays. Tree – creative recycling makes great items to hang on the tree, from pine cones to old costume jewellery or even keys. The best tree could be one that lives on in a garden pot, or recycle your tree at a recycling site (out with the rubbish means it residents are urged to goes to landfill).

plan ahead for extra festive rubbish and recycling

Party – next day, head to a recycling site as your groaning recycling boxes may not be able to cope.

Weather – if the North wind doth blow and crews cannot get through, check for advice on SWP’s website, Facebook or Twitter.

And into 2016 – why not a New Year resolution to reduce, reuse and recycle more? Check out all the advice and ideas to waste less, recycle more and save money at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Wishing You a Healthy Festive Season! Keeping well in the festive season

It’s that time of year again, a time of joy and giving, celebrating and feasting. Also a time when we can want so much to make our loved ones happy, to make a perfect Christmas to remember. No pressure then!

Stress busting

Homeopathic medicine is famed for treating the whole person, so mood or temperament can be part of the picture too:

Arsen Alb - for the anxious perfectionist who cannot relax Sepia - for those who are run off their feet and lose patience with their other half! Coffea – for those who cannot sleep due to excitement and rush of ideas

How can homeopathy help?

Homeopathic medicine can be used to treat simple ailments safely at the Þrst sign of trouble. So we can nip problems in the bud and avoid the need for anything stronger. The incredible micro doses of Homeopathic medicines enable the body to re-assert its own natural balance, without doing any harm.

A good diet is crucial for keeping well; too much sugar or processed foods are a threat health… so it can be hard to keep to our resolutions at this time of year, but homeopathy can be a helping hand: Nux Vom – where there has been overindulgence in rich food or alcohol, especially leading to headache, hangover Lycopodium – where irregular eating and diet lead to wind rumbling around

So if you have a houseful arriving for Christmas and you sense you may be getting a cold, Homeopathy may help you through. Here are some traditional recommendations: Ferrum Phos - for inßammation (eg throat) Pulsatilla - if there is a tendency to go to sinus Gelsemium - ßu like colds with weakness, headache Allium Cepa - a remedy for streaming colds

NB: Homeopathy provides simple Þrst aid, and these remedies can be bought over the counter in good health shops. For more complex or chronic problems you will need to seek professional help. Ruth Hermolle is a Homeopathic practitioner at Holistics, Wellington

HOME & MAINTENANCE

Reliable Local Handymen

Retired police officers in Somerset are pioneers in an ambitious national network of highly vetted handymen launched by ‘Blue Local Handymen’. Helping to combat the endemic ongoing problem of cowboy builders and dodgy tradespeople, local retired police officers with a passion for home maintenance and gardening are taking up tools to provide peace of mind to the residents and businesses of Wellington. Typically police officers retire after 30 years service and a huge number are still eager to continue playing an active and productive role in their communities. All of the handymen prove themselves capable and experienced in indoor and outdoor home maintenance works before joining the network and carry recent Enhanced CRB (Criminal Record) Checks. Managing Director, Nick Orde-Powlett, hopes that the company’s rigorous selection process will bring security and peace of mind to people in Somerset: “Our vetting process is second to none. All of our handymen are friendly retired police officers with many years working in the community under their belt – they understand peoples’ concerns and fears better than anyone else and they genuinely care.“ Whilst there are an enormous number of very capable, hard-working and honest tradespeople, sadly the unregulated and fragmented nature of the market allows for too many immoral rogues to operate under-the-radar which has regrettably eroded trust from the British public. Back in 2012 The Office of Fair Trading reported a shocking 70,000 complaints related to UK home maintenance sector. Using this unique pool of talented and trustworthy individuals, the Blue Local Handymen network is hoping to ensure total trust through a careful selection process and a rigorous ongoing feedback and improvement programme to perpetually monitor and improve the service for customers. Handyman Peter Lytton states: “It is very satisfying to see the clients face when we are able to provide a solution to a problem which had been troubling them.” The national network is now assisting clients across 25 branches in the UK and more retired police officers are joining every month. Due to high demand Blue are welcoming applications from further retired police officers in the area. David Cazaly recently used the service: “Very happy with the work that Peter did. His attention to detail was above and beyond and he was very tidy.” More information can be&found on the website www.trustinblue.com and bookings can be made either by calling Builders Merchants — Carpenters Joiners freephone 0800 255 0 255 or emailing helpdesk@trustinblue.com
