ooking over the Edge

With Christmas just around the corner and the cold weather kicking in, my mind wandered back to the autumn break we had in Majorca when shorts and T-shirts were the order of the day (not a pretty sight!) In particular, I remembered a couple of incidents that at the time I found quite amusing and hopefully so will my reader. We had booked on a cheap bucket airline but one where we had to pre-book seats. When they announced the flight everyone rushed to be first in the queue (me included). The queue snaked around the departure lounge intermingling with other queues for other flights, I often wonder whether some passengers ended up on the wrong flight. Having got out of the departure lounge we then queued up the steps of the plane because at the front of the line were a family of seven who had the first two rows of seats and were taking their time getting settled. Midway through the holidays we did an adventure walk through a mountain gorge. After a couple of hours we arrived at a cafe/ bar and joined the queue of other trekkers. At the front were a family of seven who were strangely familiar. Amongst other refreshments they ordered a pot of tea. The young Spanish lad who spoke good Eton English was struggling with their regional accent - I think he thought they were saying “where are you to”, so they repeated their request.. As their voices rose in frustration and the miming became more exagerrated I heard “Please may we have a POT OF TEA,T.. E.. A (spelt out loudly and signed) YOU KNOW TEA .....por favor” Although these are examples of amusing British idiosyncrasies two weeks ago I had the privilege of helping my Rotary Club collect for the poor people in the Phillipines affected by the Typhoon and was reminded of the other British trait genorosity. The National Appeal had raised over £30m during the week, as had Children in Need just the day before, but the people of Wellington were unstinting in their giving as they were across the country. We might have our peculiarities and sometimes be a little pompous but, all in all, we are not a bad race of people. Finally Yvonne, Gary and I wish you all a very happy Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous new year

PROFESSIONAL & bUSINESS

T3 Tim’s Technology Tips

Dec 2013

‘Start’, welcome back! All is forgiven. Anyone who has used Windows in the last, oh, 18 years, knows about the Start button. A brilliant innovation in 1995, it was universally understood as the place to start things on the PC. So why did Microsoft decide last year to remove it?Windows 8, launched Oct 2012 WITHOUT the Start button. And the complaints flooded in. One year on: Windows 8.1 is now released - and the Start button is back! And.. the upgrade is free for Windows 8 users. If you bought a laptop or PC in the last 12 months, you DEFINITELY want to download the update. Head to the Microsoft Store on the Start Screen, and click on the big Windows 8.1 download tile. It’s a large update though, so expect a long wait (many hours) on normal broadband.

Is your Mac a Maverick yet?

Buying Chistmas Tech?

Seems it’s the current fashion, this Autumn, to upgrade computer software for free. Windows 8.1 above and iOS7, for iPhone and iPad last month. Well, now your Apple Mac computer is probably eligible for the free Mac OS X update, called Mavericks. Also dubbed 10.9, this update adds in new features such as iBooks, File Tagging and Apple Maps. Some users are advised to check that the upgrade won’t stop anything working before proceeding, but home users, just managing things like photos, email and writing letters etc will have no problem. To kick off the download, go the App Store icon and choose OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

Write Texts! On Your PC!

Wanting to buy tech for a loved one for Christmas? It is an obvious time of the year to upgrade or buy new. But the choice can be bewildering, especially if the buyer isn’t into tech themselves. Few tips: (1) Consider telling the recipient - they may point you in the right direction. (2) Visit more than one shop to get an array of input - cheapest isn’t necessarily the best. (3) Ask for professional help (4) Check if friends/relatives use the same kit - they may have invaluable experience!

Closing Tip. Use an Android-Powered phone (Samsung, HTC, Sony etc.)? Download AirDroid from Google Play store. Amongst other things, it lets you write texts on your laptop/PC, and they send via your phone. Great!

Finger on the Pulse

by Councillor Andrew Govier.

A year ago when I wrote my article for the Edge, Wellington was recovering from a storm which we regarded as a huge one, causing damage and flooding throughout the town. Therefore we can only imagine the horrific situation currently being suffered by the people in the Philippines. The loss of life and devastation caused by the recent hurricane puts our own problems into perspective. It was very heartening to see the immediate response of local people including the churches, charity shops and the Rotary Club, who have started collections. Our thoughts and prayers go to those people directly affected but also to those in our local community who have family living there. There was excellent support for the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance services this year. It was so impressive to see the large numbers who joined the procession down through the town from Wellington School. It was particularly heartening to see so many young people involved. It is always a very moving event and as we near the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War it was particularly sad this year to hear that on every day of the 4 year war over 600 British soldiers lost their lives. We owe our predecessors who made the ultimate sacrifice a huge debt of gratitude. We should also thank all those individuals who are still serving and organisations that help us to remember them every year. There has been a lot of comment recently on the proposed route of the new road being built at the Longforth Farm development. The local council was disappointed that the road is only going to serve the Relyon factory site at the moment. We have therefore set up meetings with the developers and TDBC planners and are looking to see how we can modify the plans to allow others to benefit from the new road. As always funding is the major problem and although the road is not what was originally envisaged it will take a large number of HGVs out of the town centre and off the residential roads in the north of the town. I have written before about the excellent services offered to local young children and families by Wellington Children’s Centre. The centre provides a fantastic range of activities and support. There has been a major consultation process undertaken by Somerset County Council as they look to significantly reduce this budget. I am pleased to say that, despite the fact that the current plans are to close 18 of the 41 centres, it looks as if the Wellington centre will not be one of them. This is great news for Wellington families but I am very concerned about the impact on other communities. Children centres give children and families vital support in those crucial early years and we should be doing all we can to ensure this continues. As December approaches, we look forward to celebrating the birth of Jesus with various events in the town. The churches throughout the town will be organising many services and looking to provide help and support to the vulnerable in our community. The celebrations commence with the switching on of the lights on Saturday 30th November and a Songs of Praise Advent service at St John’s Parish church on Sunday 1st December at 4:30pm. All are welcome. We are pleased that TDBC have agreed that there will be free parking in the town on the Saturdays leading up to Christmas. We hope that people will try to do as much shopping as

12

For information on The Edge Directory ring 01823 663048 or visit www.theedgedirectory.co.uk

they possibly can in the town this year. We need a thriving town centre in the town and this period of the year is so vital to the sustainability of small businesses. I would like to finish by wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful 2014. I hope that you have a good rest over the festive period. If you would like to raise any issues with me about matters contained in the article or other concerns then please feel free to ring me on:

In good company?

For those starting out in business, or a few years down the line, the question as to whether you are operating under the most suitable legal structure is key. Sole traders and partnerships can enjoy the benefits of reduced administration, privacy, flexible use of losses and lower tax on capital gains. However, there are certain disadvantages that go with this type of business set up, with the greatest being personal responsibility. Both sole traders and individual partners within a partnership assume personal liability for all costs and losses of the business, meaning that in troubled financial times their personal assets, savings and even their homes may be on the line. Faced with this reality, the time may be right to consider a move into a more formal business structure, such as a limited company. The most obvious advantage of this type of business set up is limited liability. Assuming a business owner has not entered into personal guarantees in respect of the business, if the company fails and cannot pay its debts and becomes insolvent, personal assets will be protected and the prospect of bankruptcy avoided.

Aside from protecting the business name, a limited company structure often adds the benefit of commercial credibility and confidence with customers and suppliers. It suggests an air of status, even if that is not the case, and can prove the vital difference in securing a big client. Even more attractive may be the likely tax advantages, with company profits being taxed at corporation tax rates which are

For information on The Edge Directory ring 01823 663048 or visit www.theedgedirectory.co.uk

typically lower than income tax. In general and with the correct advice, individuals can make a significant tax saving by converting to a limited company. There is, of course, increased cost and administration associated with running a company, as well as the public availability of shareholder and financial information, which many business owners find unappealing. However, for the most part, these downsides are far outweighed by the personal protection, financial benefits and apparent boost to business reputation. Indeed, in many cases business owners are surprised to learn that the time and costs associated with incorporating and maintaining a limited company are not as high as expected. The Porter Dodson Corporate Commercial team is experienced in acting for a broad range of businesses including local sole traders, partnerships and small owner-managed companies.

Rachel Bennett - New Head at Court Fields School Following the retirment of Elaine Faull in July Rachel Bennett took over as Head of Court Fields School. It is a busy year in the life of the school as it becomes an Academy as part of the Castle Partnership Trust. I had an opportunity to ask Rachel how her first two months as Head has been? I am very proud to have the opportunity to lead Court Fields to be an outstanding school. We were all thrilled with our 2013 GCSE results which were the best results in Court Fields’ history and placed our school at the top of the County as the most improved secondary school in Somerset. My first term has been extremely hectic. In September each year we hold our very popular Open Evening. This year our new Year 7 students and Year 11 student ambassadors delivered speeches in a hall bursting with prospective parents and their children, hearing what it is like to be a student at Court Fields. The feedback we received was superb and clearly our students are very proud of their school. Most of my time as Head is spent in meetings with staff, Governors, Heads of other schools, Community members, parents and students, all with the purpose of ensuring all children achieve. I go on daily learning walks around the school speaking to teachers and students, seeing the rich opportunities students experience every day. Our students clearly enjoy school, enjoy their learning and are motivated to succeed and aspirational about their futures. Being Head is, I believe, the best job in the school. I get to celebrate every bit of success and set the direction and lead Court Fields’ drive for improvement. I delight in seeing students develop into well rounded, well educated citizens, ready for their next steps in education post 16.

Court Fields becomes an academy on 1st January. What differences will the students/parents notice?

This is an exciting time for Court Fields as we join The Castle Partnership Trust. Since September we have been working towards this transition developing capacity within our Governance, leadership and staffing structures. As an academy we are able to bid for resources that will improve the learning environment for all students. We will fully Wi-Fi our site to enable students to use mobile devices which will have an impact on their learning and motivation. We are already developing our catering facilities to provide greater space and comfort both indoors and outdoors for students at break and lunchtimes. Students will notice an improvement in the curriculum that we offer and will notice a sharper focus on learning and achievement. One of the huge benefits of this partnership is the sharing of best practice across four partnership schools. Court Fields students and parents will notice changes in procedures, processes and quality of service as we engage with the best practice across the County. Does the uniform change? I am keen for us to review all the structures and procedures that we have in place at Court Fields and improve and change whatever is necessary for our school to be first class and first choice for all parents and children within our catchment. We are going to consult all stakeholders in January on uniform. Many students have voiced a desire to wear blazers and parents have raised this too. The decision rests with Governors so we will present our findings and recommendations with any changes being brought in for September 2014. What are the priorities for Court Fields? Ofsted recently recognised the significant improvements made at Court Fields. We will be focusing on ensuring that all children exceed their potential and leave us well qualified in their GCSEs. We are developing our outdoor education programme and extra-curricular provision with the aim that all students participate in the full life of the school and develop essential social, emotional and physical skills for life.

A Relic of 19th Century Highway Maintenance by Colin Spackman Beside the old road across Hilly Head, hard up against the cemetery wall, is a small stone feature with CBB carved into it. What is the stone for, why is it there and what do the letters CBB stand for? Various Acts of Parliament, including the Bridges Acts of 1530 and 1803 made Justices of the Peace (JPs) responsible for maintaining and repairing important road bridges across watercourses. These bridges were designated County Bridges and in Somerset by 1860 there were over 150 of them. In one of the Acts JP’s responsibilities were extended to include maintenance of all roads within 100 yards of a County Bridge. The Act also required a CBB (County Bridge Boundary) stone to be sited at each 100 yard limit. If you pace out the distance between the CBB stone and the old bridge across the Rockwell Stream you will see that it is still in the correct position. However the equivalent stone on the Rockwell Green side would be just where the old and new roads join - so it was probably dug up and thrown away when the new road was built in 1930. We know this date exactly because a carving on the south side parapet of the new bridge, currently covered by vegetation, states ‘Rockwell Bridge 1930’. In 2013 there is another CBB stones extant locally - at Bradford-on-Tone against the wall outside the White Horse. Another one has, apparently, been sighted higher up the Tone - if you know where then please let me know through the Edge. From the Editor:

In the October issue of The Edge Steve Altria commented on a previous article by Colin Spackman entitled “the day the Duke of Wellington came to town”. Steve said “Did you know there did indeed used to be a Castle Public House in Wellington? I suggest therefore the article may be correct as written (and not the Squirrel as suggested in the postscript.) The Castle PH was the building in front of the scout hall - occupied by Corals the bookies now. Behind was its entertainment hall and a brewery these two now being the scout hq and why we call it “the castle halls”.We’re not sure when the main hall was built - my guess is c1850 so at the time of the visit it may just have been the pub to the front and the brewery further back behind it. Colin has now responded to that suggestion: “The verbatim printed extract from the Taunton Courier includes Taunton in its date-line.The report makes it clear that the Duke stayed overnight at The Castle in that town before coming to Wellington the next day. It was while the Duke was in Wellington that he met the town’s principal inhabitants at ‘the inn’ before continuing to Plymouth; so this inn would be a different establishment to The Castle of his overnight stay. No evidence has yet come to light on exactly which inn in Wellington the meeting took place. Inns that existed in Wellington in 1819 include The White Hart,The Ship Inn and The Squirrel and perhaps The Castle.

Mistletoe and Wine Hugh Elliot of Wine Solutions has provided the Edge with his thoughts and recommendations for wines to compliment traditional Christmas meals. Normally when we think of Christmas we think of Turkey and Christmas Pud, mince pies and Christmas Cake. However, with family gatherings and early risers, the host and hostess have to plan for all contingencies. For those with children the day can start very early and breakfast becomes a welcome respite between opening presents, tidying the paper remnants and trying to find a battery to fit the toys or grandma’s hearing aid. A light breakfast so as not to spoil lunch could consist of toast, fruit, croissants or my favourite Pain au Chocolate or for the well organised, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. It would seem a shame not to welcome Christmas with something designed to lift the spirits and put a zing into the day. Hugh recommends Cleto Chiarli brut a fantastic dry champagne that really hits the spot. At £12.69 it is incredible value for what it offers.

Late morning as the kitchen becomes a "no go" area a glass of mulled wine or even a mulled cider might bring the christmas cheer back to those of you who are starting to lose the bonhommie of the festive season and also move us smoothly towards Christmas lunch. For the turkey, red wine drinkers should go for Wine Solutions’ Italian sangiovese, medium full bodied, dry, cherry fruits. it is low in tannins which is good for a low fat bird. Its also the perfect choice for ham. The sangiovese is just £9.88 but with all orders of six bottles or more Hugh provides a 15% discount - this even applies to mixed cases. White wine drinkers should go for a full bodied chardonnay, and Hugh recommends the J-Lohr chardonnay at £14.49 extremely full bodied and bouncy on the palate, with tropical and stone fruit flavours it is the perfect white. It has been matured in oak fruit barrels so it Is perfect from the day it is opened. Whether you have the cheese before the pud or after, a sauvignon blanc is key. Wine Solutions have a sancerre les 7 hommes for £16.50 or a frost pocket at £9.69. Both will do the trick as they have enough acidity to cleanse the palate even after the strongest of cheese. Instead of opting for a dessert wine with the Christmas pudding why not try a good quality tawny port. Wine Solutions have a ten year old kopke port. Kopke port is the first and oldest port house in the world. Hugh recommends red but Wine Solutions also have a white as well., which is delightful when thoroughly chilled. Both at £15.95 a bottle. It is now time to watch the Queen’s Speech and out of respect we try to avoid drinking during this period which also allows the Republicans in the family time to load the dishwasher. As lunch fades into a distant memory it might be worth treating yourself to a Brix chocolate bar. (They are like bricks! you will have to chip at them with a kitchen utensil) fun delicious and filling, labelled the new cheese they come in four flavours incl dark chocolate for champagne drinkers. so back to the Cleto Chiarli (glad I purchased 6 bottles) which also goes well with the Christmas Cake, and then maybe a snooze in front of Last of the Summer Wine. Wine Solutions is a family run independent wine merchant and importer to the trade. Ideally situated in the grounds of Willowbrook Garden Centre it offers free and easy parking with a pick-up bay at the rear of the shop. In addition to a comprehensive range of unusual and exciting wines Winesolution also offers spirits, beers and gifts. Please remember to mention The Edge Directory when responding to adverts

Discover the Pompeii, Capri and the Bay of Naples from Taunton This month we are delighted to bring you this superb tour of the stunning Amalfi Coast. It saves you the cost of airport parking and the hassle of driving as it includes the ease of a coach from Taunton to Bristol Airport! This tour is already proving to be very popular therefore early booking is recommended. We depart on the 19th September 2014 from Bristol Airport for Naples. On arrival a coach will take us to Sorrento, a lovely base for our holiday. We stay at the Hotel Villa Maria which has an excellent central location next to the maze-like old town and only 500m from Piazza Tasso, the lovely main square in the centre of Sorrento. The hotel has a great restaurant where we will enjoy our breakfast and dinner daily and an extensive bar and lounge furnished with pastel coloured fabrics, which create a relaxing atmosphere and the perfect place to unwind after a hard day sightseeing. The swimming pool and adjacent sun terrace is the ideal spot to soak up the sun. The bedrooms are tastefully decorated and of course have a private bathroom, TV and air conditioning. We do have a selection of room types including a small number of singles available. Our tour includes seven nights half-board, a walking tour of Sorrento one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal towns a cruise to the stunning island of Capri, home of the Roman Emperors. A visit to the magnificent volcano of Vesuvius, a visit to Naples and its Archaeological Museum, a guided tour of Pompeii a city frozen in time, a tour of the Amalfi coast - one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world and also a visit to Ravello – setting for Wagner’s opera Parsifal The Sorrento peninsula and the Bay of Naples has been attracting visitors for centuries in search of its outstanding scenery, tranquillity and some of the most wondrous ‘sights’ from throughout history. The Greeks, Phoenicians and Saracens have all left their mark, but none more so than the Romans. Sorrento came to real fame, during the late 18th century when many of Europe’s aristocracy came to spend their winters here, attracted by its mild climate and outstanding natural beauty. Sorrento is everything you would expect an Italian town to be: tiny cobbled streets and quaint squares with flowers decorating almost every building.
