Every year the Mayor has a Civic Servicethis year this will be held on 4th October 2015. The Mayor has decided to focus her efforts on volunteering in Wellington. TOWN COUNCIL at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, and has worked in the community as a Health Visitor and NHS Manager in the west of England and Wales. He works for Public Health England and NHS England in Taunton. Both Cllr Biscoe’s daughters went to school in Wellington at Beech Grove and Court Fields. He is a keen cyclist and spends much of his spare time on the road with the Wellington Wheelers. Naturally, he would like to see the roads of Wellington and the surrounding area made safer for non-motorised road users, and has long advocated a traffic-free route between Wellington and Taunton. Cllr Biscoe is an enthusiastic musician who played for many years in the Wellington Silver Band, but is nowadays more commonly seen singing in local choirs, or with his guitar on a pub stage Will Brown - Councillor for Wellington North. Cllr Brown moved to the Wellington area aged 5. He attended Court Fields Community School. On the completion of his A-levels, he spent three years reading his degree in History at Aberystwyth University; graduating in 2014. Cllr Brown is a keen road cyclist, and can be often seen dashing around the country lanes; and hopes that if anyone comes across him when he is dressed in cyclist’s attire that they are not dissuaded from coming and talking to him. He also represents Wellington North on Taunton Deane Borough Council where he sits on the Planning committee and the Licensing committee. John Thorne – Councillor for Wellington North Cllr Thorne has lived in Wellington since the age of 10. He trained as a journalist on the Wellington Weekly News and worked for many newspaper groups in the Westcountry before moving into a career in public relations. Currently, Cllr Thorne is a single parent to two young sons and works part-time as a customer assistant in a Tesco supermarket. John has helped with campaigns for local people. He has been a governor of the former Linden Infants School, served on the committees of Wellington Food Town and Wellington Carnival and was involved in the refurbishment of Wellington Cottage

TOWN COUNCIL Hospital resulting in enhanced outpatient and new clinical services. Cllr Thorne has run his own businesses and is a former chairman of Wellington Chamber of Commerce. He feels strongly about the need to attract new jobs to Wellington alongside all the new housing development which has been going on, by encouraging new and existing enterprises and supporting major employers such as Relyon and Aerosols International to remain here, as well as the need to make the best possible use of the former Fox’s factory sites. Cllr Thorne enjoys using his life skills for problem resolution and directing people to organisations and/or individuals who can help them. Gary James – Councillor for Wellington East Gary has lived in local area since 1975 and Wellington Town since 1989 with his wife Birgit and two sons. He has served in the H M Army (Airborne) and worked for the H M Government. Cllr James later retrained and worked for the Nuclear Industry and then went on to work for the H M Government overseas. On retirement he has decided to re-enter politics to try to make a difference on the issues the community encounters. Cllr James now represents the residence of Wellington East on the Wellington Town Council and Taunton Deane Councils. He currently assists in a youth programme for Ten Tors Training. Gary’s sporting passion is squash. He enjoys gardening and takes great pleasure in looking after their new granddaughter and keeping abreast of current affairs. Gary feels that it is a privilege to live in such a lovely part of Somerset and have the opportunity to serve the people of Wellington. Marcus Barr – Councillor for Rockwell Green Ward Cllr Barr has lived in Rockwell Green for the last 16 years. He is married to Lisa and has enjoyed raising his family in Wellington. He feels Wellington is a great place to live with brilliant shops, it can be a quiet town with low crime rates.

TOWN COUNCIL Marcus supports S.W.A.G who are trying to bring awareness to the community on legal highs. He is also keen on recyling as much as possible. Marcus runs a business in Wellington so understands the concerns of other shops in the town. He hopes to always stand up and support the town and believes he has Wellington’s best interests at heart.

The Wellington Monument The Town Council recently received a presentation from the National Trust regarding the Wellington Monument and the current research being undertaken to find out how it can be restored. Measuring and monitoring was seen to be progressing well and the open day held by the Trust in May had been positive. The open day had been for members of the public to come and take a look at some of the research being undertaken and results found. The Council were pleased to hear that so much intensive work was being undertaken behind the scenes. The Trust was asked if they could make every effort to publicise future developments. The Trust officers emphasised that it was committed to finding the best repair option for the Monument. There was, however, a long way to go with a lot still to do including raising the necessary funds. This all made it difficult to predict when the necessary repairs would be carried out. As well as this work the National Trust had lit the Monument to commemorate the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo. This event was extremely well attended and really showed a passion from the residents of Wellington and surrounding areas for this local historical landmark.

Fire Station Presentation Wellington Town Council presented recently retired fire fighter Derrick Ridgeway with a plaque to mark his 36 years service to the town. The fire station was also presented with a plaque to recognise all those past and present that have served the town.

TOWN COUNCIL

Armed Forces Day Wellington Town Council supported Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June at the town’s war memorial in the park. The Royal British Legion attended with their standard carried by the Wellington Army Cadets. Councillors were present along with the Mayor who laid a poppy wreath, and Rev. Tim Traenor who led prayers.

Civic Award Ceremony As part of an exciting final week of primary school, Beech Grove’s, St John’s and Rockwell Green’s Year 6 pupils attended their Civic Award Ceremony held in Wellington Methodist Church. Throughout the year the pupils had been participating in the project that aimed to show them the impact they can have on society as both an individual and as a group. Wellington Town Council has been running the project for 4 years now and is delighted to see it grow each year.

Constant Pain Reduced With Bowen Therapy People often want to know what Bowen can do. Here is a recent account about the difference Bowen has made to a retired teacher living in Wellington.

What complaint or symptoms brought you for Bowen treatment? Constant pain in my lower back and left hip, thigh and groin. Numbness in the feet and lower legs.

Can Bowen therapy help me? If you have a condition that is not responding to current treatment, you may be considering other options. Bowen therapy is one of many and it helps a large number of people. What else does it work well for? A multitude of conditions including:

26 years ago I had an operation to remove a ruptured disc at the base of my spine. This left me with repeated episodes of crippling sciatica: constant pain in the left thigh, groin and lower back and numbness on the feet and lower leg.

• •

Now 68 I tried Bowen therapy as a last resort.

What happens during a treatment? Using fingers and thumbs, gentle rolling movements (known as ‘moves’) are made over soft tissue at precise body points. No massage or manipulation is used. It’s usually done with the patient wearing light clothing. People are often surprised at how little is done and how relaxed they feel.

After 3 sessions I was no longer in constant pain and now only experience the occasional short-lived twinge. I have had no more sciatic attacks.

FINGER ON THE PULSE

Finger on the Pulse By Councillor Andrew Govier

Food &Wellington Drink It seems a while since I last wrote a column for the Edge as we have had the publication of the excellent Town Guide between editions. As always quite a lot has happened in the town and there are several things to update you on.

One obvious thing to mention is the elections that took place in May. We now have a new MP, Rebecca Pow, and several new faces on both the Borough and Town councils. I hope that they all find their new roles fulfilling. There were some very close and hard fought elections and a number of hardworking and well-respected councillors lost their seats, as well as others who decided to stand down. It is only right that we should acknowledge the time and effort they put in on our town’s behalf. Most of a councillor’s work takes place ‘behind the scenes’ and it can be, at times, a thankless task. The new council has already started to work on issues that need to be addressed. It is clear that there is a real desire by all the councillors, returning and newly elected, to do the best job that we can for the town. We all know that there are lots of things to be getting on with and hopefully we can have real impact over the next few years. One issue that the Town Council has always regarded as important is ensuring that young people have plenty of things to do in the town. To this end they have firmly supported the important work of the Youth Centre. When Somerset County Council decided to cease directly providing youth services around three years ago the centre was at risk. Thankfully, through the efforts of the former SCC youth workers, local volunteers and interested individuals the centre has continued to provide excellent services. In order to secure these services going forward, it has been agreed to undertake a review of all aspects of the centre’s work. The existing youth providers are keen to develop their outreach services and move away from centre-based services so it is likely that a new provider will be appointed. This will mean that the centre will be closed for a few weeks over the summer but will reopen in September. We are very grateful to staff and volunteers who have worked so hard at the centre over the last few years and we hope that their successors will enable the vital work to continue for many years to come. I recently attended a conference at the Castle Hotel in Taunton where a number of national speakers talked about the positive effect that cultural events can have on an area. There were a number of examples where communities had benefitted economically from festivals and events. I thought about how fortunate we are in Wellington with the wide spectrum activities that take place in the town. We have already enjoyed a number of superb events with Wellistock; the regular Sunday afternoon concerts and Proms event in the park. We still have the Food Town; the Welly Boot Throwing Championship and Carnival to come. Thank you to everyone involved with these events, it is clear that not only do these events bring pleasure to thousands of people but they also help to boost the town’s economy and profile. If you would like to raise any issues with me about matters contained in the article or other concerns then please feel free to ring me on 667589 or email me on ajgovier@somerset.gov.uk .

Hack #5: Between shopping smarter, turning leftovers into new meals, taking care with portions, and good use of fridge and freezer, it is easier than ever to cut back on costly wasted food, and there is plenty of advice and support to help you. But any and all unavoidable waste from ingredients or meals must go in the kerbside food container, not the refuse bin, to feed the burping bacteria of Somerset’s anaerobic digestion plant and make both electricity and agricultural compost rather than filling up landfill. TRAVEL

The world’s most spectacular Tall Ships… As a main cruise agent, Miles Morgan Travel are seeing an increase in people wanting more than just a floating hotel - people who want to experience true sailing on a tall ship. Star Clipper operates 3 of the world’s largest and tallest sailing vessels visiting intimate ports offering passengers the chance to experience the atmosphere of a private yacht. Their cruises provide the opportunity to meet new people, see new places and, most of all, create the holiday experience of a lifetime.

Star Clipper is recognised as one of the premier specialist cruise lines with their chefs on board making dining a culinary adventure with an international mixture of foods from many corners of the world. Passengers can enjoy the romance of sailing in a relaxed atmosphere with unrivalled levels of service and guests enjoy 2:1 guest to crew ratio. All three ships have expansive teak decks, swimming pools, a convivial Tropical Bar

and a comfortable piano bar. Royal Clipper even has an observation lounge in which you can enjoy the passing scenery from the comfort of your chair. There are different categories of staterooms depending on your needs, all of which are equipped with en-suites, televisions, phones, DVD players, hair-dryers and a safe, and some cabins also have their own private veranda or open straight onto the deck.

Their wide range of itineraries include the Caribbean, Central America and the Mediterranean plus more besides and this means that there is something for everyone and it’s important to note that Star Clipper don’t just visit the main islands but venture to places that larger ships cannot reach including the hidden islands of Bequia and the dreamy Grenadines. Many destinations are available from Bristol Airport. I am thrilled to be going on a Star Clipper sailing myself in September, which I am very much looking forward to. This will enable me to provide first-hand advice to my customers. So, give me a call and I will tell you all about it….. Pop in and see me at Miles Morgan Travel, 28 Orchard, Taunton, TA1 3TP or call me on 01823 335111. We have offers arriving daily and these and many other cruise lines. I look forward to seeing you soon Becci Brazil, Manager, Miles Morgan Travel

REMORTGAGING – IS IT TIME FOR A NEW DEAL? Over the last few years, we’ve all become more accustomed to shopping around for the best prices available on purchases such as energy supplies, mobile phone tariffs, car insurance and holiday costs. We’ve got to grips with the figures, and know a good deal when we see one. However, when it comes to mortgages, a survey conducted by the Principality Building Society suggested that less than half the borrowers they asked knew what rate of mortgage interest they were currently paying. INTEREST RATES WON’T STAY LOW FOREVER With interest rates at very low levels, many borrowers are content to stick with their existing mortgage deal. However, it’s safe to say that borrowers are generally getting too comfortable with low interest rates, and although the Bank of England has said that when rates rise they will do so in ‘baby steps’, it seems almost inevitable that over the next year rates will begin to rise. So it makes good sense to check your current mortgage with your adviser to ensure that you are on the most appropriate deal for your financial circumstances. In some cases, homeowners can save hundreds of pounds a year by moving their mortgage to a more attractive rate with a different lender. If you’re looking to fix your mortgage, rates are currently as low as they have been for many years. WHEN TO ACT If your current fixed-rate, tracker or discount deal is about to end, you may find you’re moved to your lender’s Standard Variable Rate (SVR). The SVR is usually pegged to a percentage above bank base rate, and can be subject to change by the lender, in addition to rate rises. If you’re currently in a fixed-rate or tracker mortgage with exit charges, you don’t have to wait until it has come to an INDEPENDENT end. Your adviser can help you find a deal three FINANCIAL months before your lock-in period finishes. PLANNING Another possible trigger to remortgaging is the chance to change the terms of your loan to make it more flexible – for instance, allowing you to Our Wellington office is open and make higher repayments and so shorten the specialising in Mortgages overall mortgage term. RESEARCHING THE BEST DEAL FOR YOU BUY TO LET MEET THE TEAM By speaking to your mortgage adviser, you can FIRST TIME BUYERS benefit from their impartial advice and knowledge of the current deals available from a wide RE-MORGAGING range of providers, from high street banks and COMMERCIAL building societies to more specialist lenders. “Office365: moving your Office to the cloud?” Wellington based Microsoft Cloud Specialists CJ Systems on how Office 365 can help your business. OK, so perhaps you have a Small Business Server coming to the end of its life, or you’re looking to remove the worry of backing up emails and files in-house? Maybe you’re struggling to access emails on the different devices you use; you want users to be able to share calendars, contacts and files better; or maybe you just want to work smarter, and be more productive. Office 365 has the solution to all these issues and more. Office 365 includes business-class email: large, 50GB mailboxes that can send messages up to 25MB in size, with shared contacts and calendars, and spam and malware protection that stays up to date. Hosted in Microsoft’s secure data centres, with a guaranteed 99.9% uptime. Because it is internet based (The Cloud) you can get 1 terra-byte (that’s a huge 1000 gigabytes!) of personal storage per user, and using the sync app you can store files locally on your devices, and easily backup files to the Cloud. Office 365 being internet-based means you can access it securely from anywhere, and you don’t have to worry about backing up. Phone You can also use your own domain name for your email address, con01823 478515 nect with Outlook, access via the web through any modern browser, Email as well as using Windows Phone, iPhone, Android and Blackberry support@cjsystems.co.uk devices. And it’s worth repeating: Microsoft offer a financially-backed 99.9% uptime service level agreement. Sounds great, but what about the disruption of moving emails and files to Office 365? CJ systems have years of experience in migrating customers to Office 365. Whatever your current email and file storage platform, we can help move you to Office 365 with no loss of data or downtime.
