The photograph on the front cover shows a scene from a re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo which was fought 200 years ago on 18th June 1815. As the First Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley) took his name from our town and purchased land in the area it seemed fitting that the Town Guide should commemorate the event. In addition to the front cover the Guide includes an article covering some of the very colourful life of the Duke contributed by Colin Spackman. There is also a note explaining the twinning link between Wellington and Torres Vedras in Portugal which can be found on page 33. The photographs on the back page are the winning entries for the Rotary Young Photographer of the Year competition. I think they are stunning. The number and quality of entries for the competition was exceptionally high and NPSF QIPUPHSBQIT GSPN UIF SVOOFST VQ DBO CF TFFO PO 1BHF * LOPX UIBU 1FUFS 5JDLOFS BOE Tom Borg, the Judges, had a very difficult task in choosing the winners and two entries (from Thomas Barrett and Michael Crilly) went on to receive commendations at the National Finals. Here are the winners receiving their prizes from outgoing Mayor Dave Mitton accompanied by Mayoress Jill Mitton. May I take this opportunity to thank Dave and Jill for their support of the Wellington Town Guide over the last few years.

Acknowledgements Richard and Yvonne Coupe, the proprietors of Edge Publications, which produces the annual Wellington Town Guide and the more regular Wellington Edge could not provide the Guide without considerable help. In particular, thanks go to Gary James whose tireless energy has helped me take the Town Guide to a new level. The only way a publication such as the WTG can provide so much free copy for local businesses, charities and community organisations is by the support from advertisers. Without the advertisers we would not exist and I believe (he said modestly) that Wellington would be a poorer place. May I ask readers to try and use the advertisers, many of whom are well known in the area, have great reputations and want to support the town and it’s residents. Our thanks also to the Wellington Town Council for their support for the WTG and particularly Greg Dyke (Town Clerk) and Debbie Bere (Assistant to the Town Clerk) for their considerable help. Not least I must thank all my distributors including 1st Wellington Scouts (and their leaders and parents), Mrs Betty Bell, John and Sue Vallance, Patrick Clark and Pauline Redwood. Finally thanks to Andy Roswell for his excellent graphic design and technical support and Four Way Print Ltd for their high quality production. Every effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this publication’s content, however, Edge Publications accept no liability for any loss or damage arising from any omissions, errors or alterations however caused. WELCOME JANET LLOYD - Mayor of Wellington I welcome you to the new Wellington Town Guide I was recently elected Mayor of Wellington by my fellow town councillors and I am very aware that I have a hard act to follow after the last Wellington Mayor, David Mitton, made a considerable contribution to Wellington and raising the town’s profile around Somerset. I am very pleased to be able to write a few words to introduce the 2015 edition of the Town Guide. This is an excellent publication for both established Wellington residents and for those who have recently moved to the town, giving a wealth of information on groups and services operating in the area. My thanks go to all the advertisers who make the guide feasible. When my family and I moved to Somerset 25 years ago, we specifically chose to live in Wellington as it had all the amenities that we sought after with a growing family to cater for. My sons joined one the local Scout and Cub groups and we are very lucky that we have two of these groups in the town. Unusually for a small town, we have our own cinema, which in itself is a wonderful Art Deco building, and is also the venue for our theatrical groups such as the Arts Centre and Operatic Society for their pantomime and musicals. It is probably unfair of me to highlight only a few of the many voluntary groups in our town but if you look through this guide, you will see exactly how many groups we have whose members regularly give up their free time to help others enjoy life and living in Wellington. The Town Council is proud of its ability to provide grants to many of these organisations each year to help them to operate their services. My theme for the year as Mayor is to highlight and publicise the work of all of our volunteers in the town and bring them together to network and share their experiences. Wellington has an amazing history going back many centuries and I recommend a visit to our lovely museum, which is staffed by some very knowledgeable and helpful volunteers and has some wonderful exhibits charting the town’s famous residents and history. In this year, the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, we have seen that the National Trust is undertaking work to establish how they can restore the Wellington Monument that dominates our town and the

surrounding area from its iconic position on the Blackdown Hills and it is used by many organisations in the town, including the Town Council, as an emblem. During the year, we have a wide variety of events to suit all tastes. We have FREE concerts in our delightful, award winning park, the annual Street Fair, the annual Food Festival, the Carnival and most recently, the World Welly Boot Throwing Competition. These events bring many people to the town both as participants and providers of services and I know that these events have helped our local businesses network with others. Having worked in Taunton for many years, I know that even as we live in the shadow of our county town, many Taunton residents love coming to Wellington to shop at our wide range of independent shops and enjoy the varied entertainment throughout the year. Again this year, the Town Council faces many challenges with a further increase in the housing stock of the town and the impact that this will have on our schools, roads and infrastructure in general. The Council is already looking at ways of managing these changes for the benefit of Wellington’s residents by lobbying the appropriate local authorities. The Town Council makes every effort, through a variety of mediums, to be transparent and open and to inform the residents of the town, whatever their age, of events. We do this through our website www.wellingtontowncouncil.co.uk via our Facebook and Twitter accounts and through the local press. Everyone is also welcome to attend our council meetings where any member of the public can ask questions on any subject. The meetings are held on the first Monday of each month, except Bank Holidays, with the Planning Meetings starting at 6.15 p.m. and the full Council Meetings at 7.00 p.m. in the United Reform Church Hall in Fore Street, so why not come along sometime and see the Council in action? I hope that you enjoy reading and referring to this guide. Very best wishes Janet PA G E 3

Janet Reed Tel: 01823 660584 Email: janetreed@wellingtontowncouncil.co.uk Janet has lived in Wellington all of her adult life and has always had an interest in local politics. She was educated at Langford Budville Primary School, then Bishop Fox Grammar School. In her youth she enjoyed playing the piano and at one stage played the organ at Runnington church for morning and evensong. Her husband, three children and four grandchildren support her greatly, and have helped her in her campaign to become a councillor. Now retired, she enjoys gardening, walking, reading and holidays with her family. Her hope is that regardless of political party, local councillors will always do their best for the welfare of residents in Wellington and her aim is to represent the concerns and views of the many people who voted for her. Janet also became a Taunton Deane Borough Councillor in 2011 and sits on both the corporate scrutiny and lisencing committees.

WELLINGTON EAST WARD Peter Critchard Tel: 01823 668698 Email:petercritchard@wellingtontowncouncil.co.uk Pete was first elected to the Town Council at a by- election held in Rockwell Green during August 2001. He wanted to become a councillor in order to make a difference to the town where his children all grew up and attended school. He married to Cynthia in 1969 and he has 4 children Sarah, Andrea, Amanda, and John. In 2008 he became Wellington’s first Town Mayor and used the opportunity to promote the town whenever and wherever possible. Pete enjoys working with and supporting all the local organisations which do so much communal work within Wellington. He is a governor as St John’s School and Secretary of the Royal British Legion, Wellington Branch. He sees this growth of the town as an encouraging prospect for Wellington as he wants Wellington to be a place where people choose both to live and work. Pete continues to push hard for the development of Longforth Farm and the Northern Relief Road. He is truly passionate about affordable housing and is very pleased to see that local councils now have ability to start to build council houses once again. Pete feels that as a town Wellington needs to have more homes but these should be built on suitable sites that include the right infrastructure to avoid having an adverse impact on the town centre and the businesses that are located in it.

He would recommend being a local councillor to anyone who wants to get involved and make a difference for the future of Wellington. James is a member of Somerset County Council and represent Wellington on Taunton Deane Borough Council, also for Wellington East, where I try and ensure that Wellington is fully considered in the future plans for Taunton Deane. TWINNING AND TOWN CREST WELLINGTON & DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Immenstadt

Lillebonne

Wellington was first twinned with Lillebonne in Normandy in 1964. Lillebonne was already twinned with Immenstadt in Bavaria, and in 1984 we signed a twinning charter with Immenstadt, so linking the three towns together. The Duke of Wellington has historical links with Torres Vedras in Portugal, dating back to the Peninsula Wars, and we twinned with them in 1998. Twinning promotes friendship, understanding and cultural links between the three towns. Over the years thousands of young people have taken part in exchange visits to our twin towns and learnt something of their history and culture, as well as improving their language skills and having fun. As well as students’ visits, we have regular adult visits to and from all three towns. These are well supported, interesting and enjoyable and many people have formed lasting friendships over the years.

Torres Vedras

Visits include trips to places of interest. From Lillebonne there are outings to places like Etretat, Deauville, Honfleur and Fecamp, or further away, to Rouen and Paris. In Portugal there are trips to places of historic interest, some lovely old towns, and beautiful beaches. Immenstadt is in a wonderful part of Germany, with some glorious mountain scenery, lakes and rivers as well as towns like Augsburg, Lindau and Kempton. During the year the association has regular social events, which are important because they keep people in contact between visits. We welcome new members. For more details Contact: Joint Secretaries: Julie Morton 01823 661996 and Barbara Allan 01823 461577 or Chairman: Laurian Cooper 01823 400474

During the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, it is worth remembering all the events leading up to Wellington’s victory in 1815. During the preceding Peninsula War, the then Viscount Wellington ordered the construction of the Lines of Torres Vedras which defended our ally Lisbon so well, that the Napoleonic forces turned tail without a major battle. The three lines are a series of forts with reinforced banks and ditches over several miles, constructed in 1809/1810 in great secrecy. This is the reason why we are twinned with the town of Torres Vedras, Portugal, just north of Lisbon. Then at the battle of Waterloo itself, the army from Prussia played a decisive role in Wellington’s 1815 victory, the same state which would eventually unite Germany in 1871. Prussia lay in the north of Germany; our twin town of Immenstadt lies in the south. And we are of course twinned with Lillebonne, sketched by J M W Turner in 1832, just 11 years after Napoleon’s death in 1821. The sketches are in the Tate, part of the Turner bequest.

WELLINGTON IN BLOOM Wellington in Bloom entered South West in Bloom for over 30 years until 2008, winning gold medals 6 times and the Portman Cup 5 times. Since then we have concentrated our efforts on neighbourhood projects, winning awards in 2013 for the Peace Garden, the Basins and Swains Lane Nature Reserves, and establishing the Trinity Orchard working with other voluntary groups on establishing new projects.

who appreciate our efforts to enhance the town. We are not just about our floral displays in Lancer Court and hanging baskets – colourful as they are. We work with other voluntary groups within the community to help care and maintain our environment. As part of our fund raising we shall be selling a Garden Quiz (ÂŁ1) to all who ‘know the answers’ to some teasing questions. The prize will be awarded in July.

Since we began in 1984 we have initiated many improvements for our town, to remove eyesores in our High Street, and we restored the Peace Garden to the rear of the Friends Meeting House. We have planted bulbs along the verges to the town, established wildlife areas, and supported pre-schools and schools in their eco award projects, as well as removing litter and flyposting from our streets.

If you are concerned for the future of Wellington and want to see our town attract more business, more improvements in the economy, and be a floral, friendly and flourishing environment for residents and visitors, then come and join our team of volunteers. We need your support to continue for the years to come. We meet most months at St John Fisher Church Hall, Mantle Street.

As a result of budget cuts, we are carrying out jobs no longer undertaken by our District Council. But we are fortunate in receiving funding from our Town Council

MUSEUM Wellington Museum & Local History Society 28 Fore Street, Wellington TA21 8AQ Tel: 07971 242904 info@wellingtonmuseum.org.uk www.wellingtonmuseum.org.uk

MUSEUM OPENING TIMES: Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm Saturday 10am to 1pm from Easter week to end of September then only on Saturdays until mid December. Closed on Bank Holidays Wellington has had a volunteer-run museum since the early 1980s. Since then the collection, and the way it is displayed, has been enhanced, with an increasing focus on the town and its area of influence. Now, with the recent introduction of new large display boards, there is ample space to show off more of the many pictures and documents donated to the museum over the last 30 years. To mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo some seldom seen items relating to the first Duke of Wellington have been put on display.

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY – The Society, a registered charity, seeks to promote Wellington via its history to the town’s residents and visitors. To this end it organises a series of talks and walks throughout the year. The Society also runs Wellington Museum. You can learn more about, and contribute to the preservation and presentation of Wellington’s interesting past and everchanging present by joining the Society. THE MUSEUM – The Museum at “The Squirrel” in Fore St., has displays illustrating Wellington’s history – themes include the town’s industry, trade, social life and famous people . The model of the Wellesley cinema always attracts attention as does the 17th century money chest that was once used by Fox Brothers, woollen manufacturers. There is a reference library of more than 100 local history books and documents, a cabinet of documents and pictures on local topics and an oral history cd collection in which workers tell of life in local industries. Entry to the museum is free. Visitors to the museum will also find a range of Wellington souvenirs, leaflets and books on local topics for sale. A BRIEF HISTORY OF WELLINGTON – Despite being mentioned in the Domesday Book, and in some earlier documents, Wellington is essentially a modern town. There are few buildings older than the late 18th century.

FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT EITHER: Chairman: Judith Ward, Bolham Way, Clayhidon, Devon EX15 3QB Tel: 01823 680620 Curator: Colin Spackman, 8 Clifford Terrace, Wellington TA21 8PQ Tel: 01823 666702 Reg. Charity No. 801321 St. John’s parish church is the oldest building in town, parts dating from around 1200. The first prominent inhabitant was Sir John Popham who built a large mansion on what is now the football pitch sometime around 1592. Sir John rose to be Lord Chief Justice of England and took part in the trials of Guy Fawkes and Mary Queen of Scots. His house was destroyed in 1645 during a Civil War incident. Woollen manufacture became an established industry in the late 19th century, over 200 years ago. It started with the Weres and was later developed by the Fox family and by their rivals the Elworthys. Nowadays there is still a remnant of the industry with a much reduced Fox’s producing a high quality clothing fabric from their mill in Milverton Road. Wellington was brought to the attention of the wider world when, in 1809, Arthur Wellesley took the title Viscount Wellington. He was made Duke in 1814 and achieved his famous victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. Work on Wellington’s most prominent building, the Monument, began in 1817 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington following the Battle of Waterloo but it took over 35 years to build and didn’t reach its current height until 1892. The 1830s were a busy time for the town. In 1833 the Baptist Chapel in South Street and the Town Hall in the town centre were built. In the same year the gas works opened in Mantle Street. Four years later Wellington Academy, the forerunner of Wellington School was founded, and brickmaking began at Poole, now the recycling centre. In 1838 the Grand Western Canal reached Wellington, but within 5 years Wellington became part of the railway network when the Bristol & Exeter opened their station. By the first decade of the 20th century the town was reaching its current recognisable shape. Price’s (Relyon) and Gregory’s (Swallowfield) were well established and the Park opened in 1903. The principal leisure facilities appeared later in the century; Wellesley Cinema in 1937, Coram’s Lane Sports Centre in 1973, the Museum in 1983 and finally the Princess Royal Sports Centre, in the current century, in 2002. Wellington Baptist Church We’ve been in Wellington for over 300 years, but we’re bang up to date! We are a lively, outgoing, caring and exciting group (family) of Christians. Our worship style is broad in that we aim to keep the best of the old with the best of the new, and we do that through a lively, high quality, contemporary worship band as well as the traditional music of an organ. As well as usual 10.30am contemporary service every Sunday, we hold a twice monthly Early (9am) “traditional” Service, as well as occasional Café Style, Family, Healing and Youth Services. Our entire Worship Centre was renovated and updated in 2008 as the pews were removed and replaced with chairs, and the centre updated with the very latest electronic equipment; all of this creating a very beautiful place to worship God in. WBC has a huge exciting and fun work with children and young people – barely a day goes by without something happening on our church site for them, from the youngest Babies and Toddlers, through to our newly named children’s groups (all to do with chocolates) to teenagers groups – Shout and Scream. In addition we are at the heart of the Wellington Street Pastor’s Initiative, hold an annual church weekend away, an annual Children’s Holiday Bible Club, run regular Alpha Courses, as well as weekly Study and Fellowship House Groups throughout the town and district, and have specific groups for women, and for men. WBC is a part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the UK Evangelical Alliance, and also of Churches Together in Wellington. We seek to work and partner together PA G E 1 8

in common areas of mission and community life with other churches in the town. WELLINGTON TOWN GUIDE

King’s Church Wellington. King’s Church is a lively, fun filled family church founded in 1982 by a group of passionate people who discovered the joy of experiencing an intimate personal relationship with God. In 2014 the church moved premises from the King’s Centre to the former Salvation Army Hall in Gladstone Terrace, Scott’s Lane, just behind Waitrose. King’s Church is a Registered Charity known as Inspire Hope Today and is committed to Bringing Positive Change to Our Community. Our Kidz and Youth Activities are fun filled, ‘sometimes a little crazy’, but always convey the message that God’s plan for each of us is to help us become great people who can change the world around us by including Him in our every day lives. Whether you choose to come to a Sunday morning 10:30 a.m. Family Service, or attend any of our other events, the aim of the church is always to create a platform where ordinary people, like us, can experience the love and acceptance of an extraordinary God in a fun, friendly atmosphere. We often eat together, either after church services with a Bring and Share lunch, before one of our evening courses or weekend events. We also enjoy Summer BBQs, Picnics, Conferences or Weekends Away, which provide great opportunities to get to know each other better and discover more about God in a relaxed environment. We find that

interacting socially helps break down barriers between us and helps build great friendships. In recent years, in addition to supporting local children and families and working with all the local schools, we have also established an Orphans’ Feeding Programme and Academy in Kenya, offering food, shelter, education and medical help to vulnerable children and desperate families affected by HIV and AIDS. Further information, photographs and video of King’s Church activities and events is available online at www.kcwellington.org Feel free to visit us or give us a call for more information. Lying behind the Friends Meeting House In Wellington High Street is a beautiful tranquil garden. It is the old Quaker burial ground, now no longer used for burials, that was developed as a Peace Garden by the Quakers, much helped by the Wellington in Bloom Committee. It is open to all from dawn to dusk and is approached through a passage way next to One Stop and through the gates at the side of the Quaker Meeting House. The peaceful atmosphere of this old garden makes a welcome oasis in the centre of our busy town. For more information on the Wellington Society of Friends call Mrs Marian Dawson on 01823 665855. For over two hundred years this branch has supported the work of Bible Society. It has played its part in helping to provide translations of the Bible in an ever increasing number of languages. Around the world there are nearly 7,000 different languages. The Bible has already been translated, in full or in part into just over 2,500; only another 4,400 left to be done! People on lower incomes can still afford to buy their own Bibles, as prices are kept down. In 2014 our branch focussed on South Sudan, the worlds newest nation and this year we hope to raise £1000 for the work of Bible Society in Turkey. 2015 branch events are: Saturday 27th June, Coffee Morning & Sale at United Reformed Church from 10.00 - 11.30 a.m.; Turkish Evening on Saturday 12th September at Baptist Church at 7.30 p.m.; Songs of Praise on Sunday 1st November at All Saints Church, Rockwell Green at 6.30 p.m. For further information please contact Chairman John Salter (669043) or Secretary David Brown (664843)

Christian Care for One World (CCOW) is a local ecumenical group that was formed in 2007 to raise awareness in the area of Wellington and its surrounding villages, of Peace, Justice and the Integrity of Creation – that is, caring for each other and the world that we live in. The group meets in venues in the town periodically to discuss and plan ways of raising awareness for specific issues. It also initiates and takes part in activities that are aimed at raising awareness through engaging directly with the public and through campaigning. All people who have concern for the above issues are welcome at meetings whether they are members of any Church or of none at all. Details of meetings and activities can be obtained from the CCOW Convenor: David Dufour on 01823 666633.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN WELLINGTON AND DISTRICT Our Mission is to pray and work together as Christians for the benefit of the community, to respect and share with others the richness of each Church’s tradition, and to give God the glory in our worship. Moderator: Andrew Harvey email: redhill.farm@btinternet.com Deputy Moderator Rev Tim Treanor email: tlvtreanor@btinternet.com Communications Secretary: Isabel Ward email: mantlestreet@sky.com Treasurer: Chris Salter email: salters@talktalk.net In April Wellington was mentioned by The Times as a happy place to live because it is a friendly town, with a good community spirit. The Churches play their part in this ‘feel good’ factor, working together across our many traditions for the glory of God and for the benefit of all, through many activities like the Food Bank at its twice weekly openings. The Street Pastors too are in touch with young people every week, and a team of volunteers are regularly welcomed in taking the Christian message into our schools. The ‘Big Tent’ Children’s Holiday Club is taking place at the Wellesley Park Primary School from 18-20th August 2015 – booking forms can be obtained from the Baptist Church. Members from the churches are visiting newcomers to the estates at Cades Farm and Longforth Farm to help them feel at home and settle into our community. Generous contributions from the churches support Christian Aid, and numerous national Christian and local charities are helped by volunteers on a weekly basis. Many of the churches run their own children’s groups, and they have regular social gatherings for older people. Venues and times can be found on their noticeboards. On Sunday 18th October at 6.30pm the annual Care in the Community Service will take place at the Baptist Church, in South Street.

There will also be the annual ‘Singing of carols around the pubs’, with an Open Air Carol Service in December on the United Reformed Church green. Each Good Friday we hold a United Service followed by a Walk of Witness through the town. Many Church members play or sing with local choirs and Choral and Music Societies. Churches Together in Wellington and district is one of many such organisations in the county under the auspices of Churches Together in England. Groups in towns across the country often work inter faith to help communities come together and be of service to one another. Members in our Churches Together in Wellington are led by a Moderator and Deputy, Treasurer, and standing committee who arrange quarterly meetings, often welcoming a visiting speaker, and to encourage one another. We hold our Annual Meeting during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January. Our contribution to the wellbeing of our community is both appreciated and supported by our Town Council. If you are new to Wellington and would like to join our ‘happy band of pilgrims’, then you will be given a warm and friendly welcome. Just be in touch with Isabel Ward, email: mantlestreet@sky.com

THE FIRST DUKE OF WELLINGTON In the 3 volume Concise Dictionary of National Biography Winston Churchill merits 15 column inches and Henry VIII gets 2 more but Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, is accorded 21 column inches. A striking statistic. It shows how significant and wide-ranging were the Duke’s involvement in British, European and world affairs in the first half of the 19th century. Arthur Wellesley was born into an Anglo-Irish family in Dublin in 1769. After being educated at Eton he started out on a life in the military with initial training at Angers, ironically, in France. He rose quickly from the rank of lieutenant of foot as an 18 year old to be a lieutenant colonel in only six years. By 1806 he was a full colonel and in 1813, at the age of 44 was made field marshal, the highest rank in the British army. However, while pursuing his generally successful military career, which took him to the Netherlands, India, Spain and Portugal, he was also engaged in politics. At the age of 21 he became the MP at Westminster for the Irish town of Trim, 25 miles north west of the city of his birth. Later, in 1806-07 he represented Rye (East Sussex), Mitchell (a rotten borough in Cornwall) and Newport (Isle of Wight), but only for a few months each, while also being the government’s Chief Secretary for Ireland 1807-9. But it was his military exploits in defending Spain and Portugal from an attempted take-over by the French that brought Arthur elevation to the peerage. His success at the battle of Talavera followed by the successful defence of Lisbon by means of the forts and trenches known as the Lines of Torres Vedras led to him being created Viscount in 1809. Arthur’s progress through the ranks of the peerage were even more rapid than his promotions in the army. He was

made Earl of Wellington in February 1812; in August that same year was promoted again, to Marquess Wellington; his final promotion to the highest rank possible, Duke, came in 1814. So although he is best known as the victor at Waterloo (18 June 1815) it is apparent that even before that decisive if close-run battle, Arthur Wellesley, by his early forties had achieved both the highest military rank, Field Marshal, and the highest civil rank, Duke. So how could he be rewarded for saving Europe from French domination? By being appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB), an honour bestowed only on a limited number of men. In addition he was handsomely rewarded monetarily. The government granted him £400,000 to purchase a residence commensurate with his heroic status which augmented his previously granted pension of £4,000 a year - considerable sums 100 years ago let alone 200. After Waterloo and the exile of Napoleon to St Helena, the need for military exploits was much reduced so Arthur concentrated on a his political career. The Duke added the highest rank in British politics to his other achievements when, in 1828, he accepted the role of Prime Minister, apparently reluctantly. But he resigned two years later because he couldn’t accept the growing call for parliamentary reform. His unwillingness to support extending the franchise to a wider electorate and for phasing out rotten boroughs brought him temporary unpopularity. But none-the-less he was again, but briefly, Prime Minister and also Home Secretary, in 1834 followed by a stint as Foreign Secretary and then finally as a cabinet minister without any designated role for 5 years until 1846. The Duke died in 1852 at the age of 83 after living the most influential and significant life imaginable in early 19th century Britain. It is hardly surprising the Dictionary of National Biography devotes so much space to Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington.

FRIENDS OF WELLINGTON PARK The “Friends” were established in 2001 at the behest of Taunton Deane Borough Council who were to receive Lottery funding for the refurbishment of our Edwardian Park. One of the major conditions for the grant was the establishment of an elected group of members of the public who were prepared to oversee and organise interests in the park. The “Friends of Wellington Park” was elected with a constitution, committee members and bank account. The public were asked to become members and they have been the backbone of the group since then, supporting events and paying annual subscriptions. There has been an annual May Day Event since the “Friends” were formed in 2001. They organise and present 12 weeks of musical entertainment every Sunday afternoon in the Park from June until the end of August. Music starts at 2.30 and finishes at 4.30 with a short interval. Refreshments are available and also a small gazebo for the children to do colouring, read books and other interests. Information leaflets are available and, of course, membership forms should you wish to join us. We could not provide a May Day Event without the membership subscriptions and this is a family day when all the charities benefit from support and the youth groups are seen doing a magnificent job in keeping the children entertained. The Executive Committee of the “Friends” is only a small group but even though membership is over 80 it needs to be even larger. Although we fundraise, it is necessary to support Council grants to the best of our ability. We are constantl;y upgrading our equipment, chairs, gazebos etc. to make sure that the public enjoy their visits on a Sunday afternoon. Membership is Single £5 – Couple/Joint £7.50 and Family £10 per annum.

You will receive at least two newsletters a year and an invitation to our social events but mainly you will be supporting the preservation of your award winning Park, Green Flag and much coveted Heritage Award. CARNIVAL – 266TH SEPTEMBER up, the Carnival Committee are now considering making this an annual event. Dave Rylatt opened the evening by explaining that this was the concluding part of 2014 carnival/street fair events, which has been widely acknowledged of being a big success. He thanked the unsung heroes that form the Carnival Committee, their efforts resulted in record attendance and stalls at Street Fair, and for carnival, there were record numbers of collectors (this meant borrowing hundreds more collecting pots from our neighbours in Bridgwater), record crowds, a record collection count, a record procession length, and a record amount of headaches and technical challenges during the event back in September.

Wellington is a town lucky enough to hold a carnival procession each year, we can trace the origins of carnival in the town back to 1887. Whilst the carnival is not as large and vibrant of the towns lucky enough to be in the larger Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Circuit, it is part of the South Somerset Carnival Federation which includes Ilminster, Chard and our County Town Taunton. Carnival processions are in decline, as there is an ever increasing cost of running the event, as well as health and safety legislation requiring a more business like professional approach to stage the event. Wellington is lucky to have a very new committee (all are volunteers), anyone interested in getting involved can have a look at the carnival website

Wellington Carnival Committee in association with Sheppy’s Cider are delighted to announce that they have booked the Wurzels to play in a Autumn Music Festival close to the village of West Buckland on 19th September. The band are due on stage at 9pm, and will be supported by some local bands. Event organiser Mark Wharton commented “we are confident that The Wurzels will attract a lot of interest; the date we have selected fills a void in the Wellington Calendar, as the rest of the weekends are taken up with Food Fair, Welly Boot Competition and not forgetting of course, Wellington Carnival which is due to take place on 26th September.” Dave Rylatt Operations Director For entry forms or more information about being involved in the Carnival Committee contact: Chairperson ~ Dave Rylatt Email - chair@wellingtoncarnival.org.uk 55 Wellesley Park, Wellington, TA21 8QD Tel - 01823 662198

Wellington Carnival is due to take place on September 26th this year; 2014 carnival was an unprecedented success resulting in almost 150 people representing local clubs and charities being packed into Wellington Rugby Club when almost £5,000 was handed out to those present. The following are the different societies within the association. Wellington Operatic Society The Operatic Society is active all year round, staging two regular productions

each year. Each May they stage a musical at the Wellesley Theatre, as well as a cabaret show of their own devising each autumn at the Arts Centre. In addition, the Operatic Society provide entertainment to other organisations and at other local events as part of their year round touring programme. The Wellington Pantomime Group In January 1975 the first Pantomime, Dick Whittington was staged at the Arts Centre. The group continued with an annual pantomime at the Arts Centre until 1978. The early shows had no real budget and funds were raised by a sponsored walk on the Quantocks - thank goodness things have changed! The first four pantomimes were played to full houses so in 1979 the group took the plunge and moved to the Wellesley Cinema. Since then the group has continued to grow and with it their reputation. These days the group performs a minimum of seven shows, three of those on a Saturday! and regularly wins awards - most recently garnering 7 from the SFD, for their 2013 production of “Alice in Wonderland. Genesis Youth Theatre Group The Genesis Youth Theatre Group was founded in Wellington in March 1996 with the purpose of introducing young people to all aspects of the performing arts. In the past they have performed hit plays, musicals and cabarets including Kes, Sparkleshark, Bugsy Malone

and Genesis Showcases; performed as part of the Brewhouse Theatre’s ‘Fully Charged’ Festival and Somerset Fellowship of Drama’s Youth Festival; as well as writing and performing ‘Think Twice’ – a highly-acclaimed and specially commissioned drugs awareness play which toured various schools and youth organisations in the South West. The group also took part in a National Film Project in association with First Light Films, UK Film Council and Somerset Film and Video. These days the group aims to stage 2 or 3 performances each year. Members have the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of staging a production including performing, marketing, lighting, sound, make-up, costume and stage management through a variety of workshops. The group has a walking entry in the Wellington and Taunton Carnival each year to promote the shows they are about to stage and has won several carnival prizes. The group meet between 7pm and 9pm on every Wednesday evening during the school term time. Due to popular demand, attendance is limited to 20, so please e-mail the group’s Secretary for information about joining the waiting list. genesis@w-a-a.co.uk The Civic Players The Civic Players is the drama wing of the Wellington Arts Association and have existed for over 60 years. recent times they have concentrated on presenting light comedy and farce but are looking to extend the variety of productions that they are able to offer the local play-going public. With a small revamp of the profile of the group they are branding themselves as The Wellington Theatre Company and will look to provide more opportunities each year to be in, and watch, good quality popular plays in Wellington from all genres. As such they will reinvigorate the group with a production of ‘Calendar Girls’ in 2013, with more well known and challenging opportunities ahead. We are always looking for new talent both on and back stage, so do visit our website at www.w-a-a.co.uk. Spectrum Arts and Crafts Spectrum forms the art & craft section of the WAA. Members meet at the Arts Centre every Monday between 2pm and 4.30pm. Talks, demonstrations and workshops are arranged occasionally, and visitors are always welcome. Spectrum holds an annual exhibition at the Arts Centre during the third week of July.

IN & AROUND WELLINGTON Wellington Park One of the most enjoyable attractions. Set on a compact site occupying just 4.5 acres it is within ten minutes easy walking distance from the town centre. The park is open daily from 8.00am to dusk. The park was a gift from the much respected Quaker Fox family to the town. The family were the town’s main employer for many years, providing jobs to over a thousand people in their textile manufacturing, wool and banking companies. Their aim was to provide a permanent recreation ground for the people of the town. Their offer of the park was made on the basis that the park was “under the constant supervision of a resident caretaker and shall not be used as a playground, or as a playing field, for older children and adults.” In 1902 Messrs Robert Veitch & Sons of Exeter began work on laying out the formal gardens to a design by F.W. Meyer, a renowned German landscape gardener. He included in his design a rock garden as part of the pond area which included 80 tons of limestone from Westleigh. Cement was not used as the colour of it would not have matched the limestone when it was wet. The floral bedding was designed to compliment and contrast with the rock garden and curving paths. Rhododendrons as well as Berberries, Savin Junipers and Holly Olives were added. In 1908 Plane trees were planted along the eastern side of the park to replace a line of mature Beech trees which were deemed too large and unsafe. The park has four entrances, three incorporated in the original layout; the fourth, which provides access close to the bandstand from the recreation field was a later addition. The caretaker’s cottage was built in a similar style to that chosen for the entrances. On the first floor, there was a gracefully curved window that would have allowed the caretaker a comprehensive view of the park. Wellington’s war memorial, a Cornish granite obelisk on a raised plinth, was unveiled in 1921. Situated close to the shelter, it bears the names of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Although much of the park’s original design survived throughout the 20th century, it suffered from general deterioration, lack of maintenance and the loss of some of its features, such as the ornamental fountain. It underwent a transformation at a cost of just over £400,000 and was officially reopened in October 2000. The original layout of the park was restored and buildings, including the bandstand, were restored and the fountain was re-created.. The tree canopy was thinned and the over-mature shrubberies rejuvenated. Park furniture was improved and gravel path surfaces reinstated. A new concealed water supply was installed in the rock garden, and the planting was restored in accordance with Meyer’s plans. The needs of disabled users were taken into account and lower borders now include scented or tactile plants for the enjoyment of visually impaired visitors. The bandstand remains in its original position, close to the western boundary of the park The original ornamental fountain has been replaced by one of similar design and memorial trees have been planted over the years to mark various events including George V’s coronation day. Wellington Basins In 1803 , Thomas Fox built two ponds to supply a water wheel based at Fox Brothers woollen mill at Tonedale. These ponds were called the basins and were fed by an intricate system of feeder streams, weirs and sluices. Although these ponds no longer serve any water wheel, the basins are a popular spot for anglers and are a pleasant spot for a walk or just to feed the

ducks. You can find the basins at the end of Coram Lane by the Wellington Rugby Club. Wellington Monument A 175 feet (53 m) high triangular tower located on the highest point of the Blackdown Hills, 3 km (1.9 miles) south of Wellington, Somerset, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. Wellington Monument, was erected to celebrate the Duke of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo. The foundation stone was laid in 1817, on land belonging to the Duke, but the monument was not completed until after the Duke’s death in 1854. Its design was inspired by an Egyptian obelisk, but in the shape of the type of bayonet used by Wellington’s armies. It is 80 feet (24 m) wide at the base. A counterweight hangs inside to help balance the Monument in windy weather. An internal staircase ascends to a viewing platform although this is currently closed due to the need for structural work and the base is surrounded by an open wire fence for the safety of visitors but does allow viewing. It is now owned by the National Trust, and is floodlit at night. Originally four cannon surrounded the Monument, but these were removed during the Second World War (1939-1945) and used for scrap to help the war effort. In 1985, the Wellington Rotary Club donated the cannon currently standing at the base of the Monument. In June 2009, the National Trust announced plans to reclad the monument at a cost of £4 million. Sir John Popham (1531–1607) was Speaker of the House of Commons, Attorney General and Lord Chief Justice of England. He was noted for his severity towards thieves and strict enforcement of the Penal Laws. Popham presided over the trial of the Jesuit, Robert Southwell, in 1595 and passed sentence of death by hanging, drawing and quartering. He also presided over the trials of Mary, Queen of Scots (1587), Sir Walter Raleigh (1603) and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes (1606). He sentenced Mary and Fawkes to death. While working as the messenger to the Queen, Popham was imprisoned by the Earl of Essex Popham replied that at his age, death would be “but cutting off a few years.” However, he was rescued Popham lived in Wellington and amongst his many charitable works included setting up a Trust to build and maintain almshouses for the poor. The Trust still survives. Sir John Popham died 10 Jun 1607 at Wellington, Somerset. According to local legend, Popham was killed by being thrown from his horse into Popham’s Pit, a deep local dell, dying horribly and descending to Hell. He is named on his wife’s grave stone in the nearby Wellington Church, but according to legend his body doesn’t lie there. Every New Year’s Eve his ghost is supposed to emerge from Popham’s Pit and take one cock’s step nearer to the grave. Until he has reached it, legend says that his soul will not rest in peace. His impressive memorial tomb can be seen in the St John the Baptist Parish Church in Wellington High Street. Wellesley Cinema Wellington’s Art Deco Wellesley Cinema, in Mantle Street, just five minutes walk from the Town Centre was built in 1937, in the traditional Art Deco style of that period. The auditorium seats 400 people on two levels and is run as an independent cinema. It has a striking Art Deco interior and is a must see for allvisitors to the town.

Wellington School Chapel Wellington is home to the prestigious public school that bears the town’s name. Founded in the 1840s the school has a range of excellent buildings reflecting the architecture of the last 150 years. The Chapel (192831) was built by C. H. Biddulph-Pinchard as a memorial to those masters and pupils killed in the Great War. It is built of irregular bond red brick with stone dressings. The richly decorated interior has carved wooden wall panels with elaborately decorated canopies made of moulded plaster, all painted and gilded, with the panels engraved with the names of old boys killed in the First World War. The galleried choir stalls and organ loft over entrance and canopied reredos are similarly decorated. The Chapel has a carved stone altar., carved bench ends and traceried stall fronts. The roof has a series of carved and moulded

tie-beams on corbels, supporting a panelled roof with moulded ribs also painted and gilded. It is a Grade 2 list building and can be visited during school holidays on application to the school office. Wellington School is 200 yards from the town centre in South Street. Cothay Manor & Gardens One of Somerset’s best-kept secrets is Cothay Manor & Gardens.
