I cannot believe I am writing an editorial for the October issue. It seems only five minutes since we were basking in summer sunshine yet autumn has come in so quickly that the halcyon days seem ages ago. The one positive about autumn is the excellent September events we have in the town. The Food Fair was again well attended despite the heavy showers and the Welly Boot Championships at Court Fields School was superbly organised, well attended and great fun. As the Edge is being delivered we will be enjoying the Wellington Carnival, one of my favourite evenings of the year. I think the early autumn twilight combined with large crowds, excited children, the peddlars, innovation of the entrants and the noise and lights of the floats combine to give an air of mystery reminiscent of Victorian England. Well done to all the organisers but also to the many volunteers who ensure these events go ahead. Believe it or not the Edge is in its 9th year, and since its first issue in 2005, has gone from strength to strength. The first issue was black and white, was 24 pages long and delivered to 1500 homes. Now it is 64 pages, full colour and is delivered to 6500 homes. While it is mainly an advertising vehicle for local businesses it has developed to provide local interest articles and I hope has a real community feel. However we do not wish to sit on our laurels and I have outlined on Page 6 some changes which come into effect from the December (Christmas) issue. I hope you like them

Changes to The Edge Over the last few months I have worked hard to improve the quality of production and make the magazine more readable and therefore more attractive for the advertisers. I am grateful for the positive and constructive feedback which has helped me develop the Edge over the years. As a result of this feedback I have made and am making the following changes to the Edge. SALES MANAGER I have appointed a sales manager to help me develop the relationship with advertisers and contributors and speed up response times. Welcome to Gary James who has now taken up his duties and will help me follow up the many enquiries that we receive. Gary and his family have lived in Wellington for 13 years and is well known around the town. Gary can be contacted on sales@theedgedirectory.co.uk and 01823 429225 CLASSIFIED TRADE & PROFESSIONAL ADVERTS. From December we are introducing a classified advert section in the magazine. This is ideal for the small business that does not have much money to spend on advertsing but wants a presence, or for those who wish to advertise vacant positions:. Boxed 40 x 30mm (2 colour) advert for just ÂŁ11 an issue Boxed 60 x 40mm (3 colour) advert for just ÂŁ16 an issue For more information on the classified advert section contact Gary NAME CHANGE. Many people have told me that the title The Edge Directory does not provide an identity for the magazine and therefore the title on the magazine will now be The Wellington Edge, although website and emails will still be entitled The Edge Directory, the company registered name.

How Clifford Terrace Got Its Name - Possibly. An Incomplete Detective Story by Colin Spackman Clifford Terrace is just off Wellington’s High Street, down the alleyway beside Mary Jenkins greengrocers. The terrace was built, around 1908, in the back garden of Clifford House - the large late 18th century building in High Street that houses the opticians. But - why is Clifford House so called.? A small book on topics in Taunton’s history tells of a Thomas Penny (1827-1906) who, with his son also Thomas - bought the Greenway Estate, just north of the railway in Taunton, towards the end of the 19th century and built many of the houses in that area. Thomas snr. named these streets after his sons and grandsons - Cyril, Leslie, Raymond, Herbert, Thomas and William. But he also commemorated a Dr John Clifford in naming Clifford Avenue. Who was Dr Clifford? Perhaps he could have given his name to Clifford House here in Wellington. There is a substantial entry in the Dictionary of National Biography that begins ‘Clifford, John (18361923) Baptist leader. ....’. Right name, right dates. Dr Clifford was a man of national rather than local significance - no connection with Somerset is mentioned. His biography goes on to state that he was opposed to state aid for denominational schools and led passive resistance to the Education Act of 1902. Now Clifford House, Wellington, was originally built in 1770 on the site of the Swan Inn and called Swan House. In 1774 it was rebuilt in its current form, except for the addition of the three shop fronts which were built over its front garden in 1907. However in the 1880s the house was renamed Clifford House by its then occupier, Mr. Egerton Burnett (1835-1895) who was Wellington’s international mail order pioneer. Here is a conjecture. Dr John Clifford was a leading Baptist of national prominence in the late 1880s. Wellington has long been a stronghold of nonconformism. Egerton Burnett may have been a Baptist, or at least a Nonconformist, who admired Clifford’s work. Also he may have been teetotal and felt uncomfortable living in a house named after a pub. Both of these are good reasons for him to change the name from Swan House to Clifford House. Then when the Terrace was built, around 1908, it would have been natural to name it after the house in whose grounds it was built. Enquiries into Egerton Burnett’s religious affiliation have not yet yielded an answer of any sort. Can any reader supply information to support, or even undermine, the conjecture outlined above? If you can, please let the editor of the Edge know. 1. Taunton An A to Z, by Lionel Ward - the proprietor of Brendon Books. £10

Steve Altria commented on the article in the last Edge “the day the Duke of Wellington came to town”. Steve said “Did you know there did indeed used to be a Castle Public House in Wellington? I suggest therefore the article may be correct as written ? (and not the Squirrel as suggested in the postscript.) The Castle PH was the building in front of the scout hall - occupied by Corals the bookies now. Behind was its entertainment hall and a brewery - these two now being the scout hq and why we call it “the castle halls”. We’re not sure when the main hall was built - my guess is c1850 so at the time of the visit it may just have been the pub to the front and the brewery further back behind it.

Finger on the Pulse

by Councillor Andrew Govier.

In the last few days while I have been thinking what to write in this article the weather has turned quite wet and windy. We have had a great summer as far as the weather has been concerned. Probably the ‘barbeque’ one that we have been promised for ages! The sunny summer has meant that lots of the town events have been even more successful this year. The concerts in the park organised by the ‘Friends of Wellington Park’ have, in the main, seen people hiding under the gazebos from the sun rather than the rain! It has been really encouraging that people who volunteered to do the ‘heavy work’ have been true to their word and helped the dedicated band of volunteers to deliver a first rate programme. The park itself and the town’s floral displays have been excellent again this year and we should be grateful for the efforts of Taunton Deane DLO and Wellington in Bloom in making this happen. As always September seems to be a really busy month. This year it started with two big events on the same day. I was delighted to attend the opening of the new sports pavilion at the Playing Field. It really is an excellent facility for the sports teams in the town and has been achieved through the efforts of many people from the town and beyond. We hope that this will encourage even more people to participate in sport and in was great to see all of the sports clubs there demonstrating what they had to offer. Later in the afternoon there was another brilliant community event at Howard Road, organised by Churches Together and the Wellington Street Pastors. The event was as successful as last years and really seemed to bring the community together. I have commented before that we are blessed by the dedication of the people in our churches and sports clubs who give so much time and energy to providing things for others. The Food Town event took place again this year and was another success, thanks in no small part to the organising committee and the support of local traders and residents. There was a change this year with the event extending into South Street and despite the arrival of rain at lunchtime most people seemed to do very well. I think that Wellington would really benefit from having a regular outdoor market and using South Street would be one idea. I know that several other towns have found that having a regular market brings lots of new people in and boosts the local economy. We have so many excellent local producers and businesses and with people becoming increasingly keen to buy local food it would seem to me an excellent opportunity. The following week we had another successful Welly Boot Throwing championship organised by the Wellington Experience and we still have Wellington Carnival to look forward to. Not bad for one month in the town! All of these events only succeed because of the hard work and dedication of lots of local people and we should all be very grateful for their efforts! If you would like to raise any issues with me about matters contained in the article or other concerns then please feel free to ring me on:

Charity urges people of Somerset to make Joint Effort pledge for National Arthritis Week Arthritis Research UK is calling on the people of Somerset to make a Joint Effort pledge to raise money, share their experiences and find out more about the realities of living with arthritis, during the charity’s National Arthritis Week on the 7-13th of October. Over 10 million people in the UK live with the pain and disability caused by arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Arthritis can affect people of all ages, having a devastating impact on their quality of life. Special fundraising and awareness events around the country have been planned to increase awareness of arthritis and the impact of the disease. Arthritis Research UK receives no government funding. All proceeds raised during the week will go towards funding the charity’s pioneering research into the cause and treatment of arthritis.

Susie McCallum, Regional Fundraising Manager (South West) for Arthritis Research UK, says: “This National Arthritis Week we are asking people to help us fight arthritis by making their own Joint Effort pledge. We hope that many people in Somerset will mark National Arthritis Week by hosting a special event. People can choose to pledge to support us by giving, sharing their story or learning more about what it’s like to live with arthritis.” Make your Joint Effort Pledge and hold your own fundraising event during National Arthritis Week Your free fundraising pack will include: • • •

Everything we do is underpinned by research. Our core remits are funding world-class research and providing a comprehensive range of information for patients, the public and health professionals and we are committed to raising the profile of arthritis and making a real difference to people’s lives.

Arthritis is a huge problem, affecting more than 10 million people in the UK, including 15,000 children, and we believe the time is right for us to raise its profile, both among the general public and government. WELLINGTON STUDENT TAMES THE DRAGON I was able to catch up with ex-Wellington School pupil Tom Carson who managed with his business partner, Chris Rea, in the last show of the current series of Dragon’s Den to persuade Dragon Duncan Bannatine to part with £75,000 in exchange for 40% of their clothing Company ‘Young Ones’. Tom, who lived in Wellington and went to Wellington School from 2001 to 2008, met Chris, an ex-Millfield boy at Exeter University where they graduated with Business Degrees. Both were hockey sports scholars and are now making their names as senior Internationals, Tom with England and Chris for the USA. I made the error of asking Tom what made them come up with the idea of marketing adult romper suits and was quickly told “You can’t call it a romper suit!! It a onesie” . Tom explained that Young Ones was started in response to the trend for “onesies” which kicked off in 2011. Tom and Chris saw an opportunity to provide a high quality but lower priced alternative to the then marketleading brand. Working with international suppliers Chris and Tom were able to source a product which they could take to market at half the price of competitor products and quickly began to secure sales.Young Ones then started to offer volume sales and customised onesies to University groups such as sports teams and societies. As well as being priced very competitively which made them affordable for students Tom explained that as they were both students when they began, they were in touch with what students wanted and able to respond quickly to new trends. They also have t shirts, holdalls/bags, beautiful wooden sunglasses, deck shoes, and more to come. Having secured Duncan Bannatyne’s support they intend to use his investment to increase their stock holdings, develop the range of products, improve the website and generally make the business more professional and efficient through developing infrastructure. Tom and Chris have now embarked on a 2 month tour of university campuses peddling their wares and drumming up interest in their brand. If you would like to know more about Young Ones and their range of stock visit their website:

The Burning Question: Is my house on the market for the right price? Gibbins Richards’ answer: A tough one – in a market that is ever changing it is sometimes difficult to establish your property’s actual value. And we’re not talking asking prices here – that’s the easy bit. The tricky bit is trying to predict just how much a sale price will settle at once a buyer has been found and negotiations start. It isn’t unusual for a first offer to be made at about 10% less than the asking price. So as an example, if your property is on for £200,000, then an offer of £180,000 could be deemed as a sensible starting point. But after that first offer has been made, it’s then down to your estate agent to find a happy balance between what you’d like to achieve and what your buyer wants to pay, hopefully in your favour. The chances are the buyer has lots of information available to them about your house and your neighbourhood – what you paid, when you bought it, what other similar properties have sold for nearby, and (rather frustratingly!) some websites think they can ‘predict’ what your home is worth now, based on national price trends and mortgage statistics. These figures are not always accurate, and can sometimes make for a more unrealistic offer to be made. Your estate agent should be able to see what the interest trends are in your property – and website statistics are not necessarily the bible. It is not always about who has seen your property online, more about who the agent has talked to about the benefits of your home and how it could suit them. Again, information available online is wide and varied, and a potential buyer can dismiss even the most perfect home if they see anything online that may put them off. For example, there is a certain website that offers information on anti-social behaviour and crime rates. Search for ‘Wellington, Somerset’ and all sorts of colourful data comes up, enough to put anybody off at first glance. But look a little deeper into the webpage and you’ll see that the statistics actually relate to Wellington in Shropshire, not Somerset! Dangerous stuff, and potentially damaging to our town’s success. So it is your estate agent’s responsibility to maximise the ‘selling potential’ in that buyer by speaking with them and spending time with them, overcoming any objections they may have and ultimately maximising their monetary interest in your house. If your house is getting viewings then the chances are it is on for the right price. A viewer may well offer less but at least you will see activity throughout the marketing. If you have been on the market for some time and viewings have been slow (as is very often the case), then the chances are there may be some adjustment needed on your asking price.Your estate agent should not be frightened of broaching this subject with you, it is after all their job to sell the house, not have it in their window for months on end!

The Legal Eagle looks at : Rising Interest in the Bank of Mum and Dad With property prices in the south west remaining high in relation to salaries and more attractive mortgage deals being available to those with a bigger deposit, many buyers are relying on “the Bank of Mum and Dad” to enable them to get a foot on the housing ladder. Outright gifts For parents, grandparents or other family members who are in the fortunate position of being able to make an absolute gift of funds (on average £17,000.00 according to research) there are no legal issues other than ensuring that the mortgage lender is aware what funds are being gifted. You should ensure that your mortgage broker and conveyancing lawyer are aware of the situation from the start. How to protect the loan Where a family member is using their own savings or has raided their own pension and is seeking to protect their hard earned cash the situation is different. Mainstream mortgage lenders are reluctant to agree to anything which may adversely affect their position and few lenders are likely to agree to a family member having a second charge (mortgage) over the property as security even though it would not affect the first lender’s ability to repossess the property in the event of the mortgage payments not being made. If the mainstream lender is not prepared to allow a second charge there are still ways of protecting the family member’s investment. Most popular would be a Declaration of Trust setting out the various parties’ input and who is entitled to what in the event of the property being sold. These are equally useful where two or more people are buying a property together but contributing different amounts or where they will be making different payments towards the mortgage and running costs in the future. Alternatively a Promissory Note providing a simple legal promise to repay the loan at a future date may be appropriate. It is essential to take good legal advice at an early stage in the process and Porter Dodson’s legal advisors are there to prepare support and protect you throughout the process. What is Osteopathy? Martha Price provides a fascinating article on the history and treatment provided by Osteopaths Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring. Osteopathy was founded in the USA by Andrew Taylor Still, in 1874. Still developed a pioneering hands-on treatment approach to deal with the health and mobility problems he found in his patients, based on structural anatomy and physiology. In the early 1920's, William Garner Sutherland, a student of Still, took this a step further and developed Cranial Osteopathy. He noted that there was a rhythmic micro-movement in the connective tissues and central nervous system, which in healthy subjects was continuous and even, but became altered or restricted after a trauma or accident, or during times of infection or inflammation. Its this Cranial Rhythm that cranial osteopaths use to treat their patients, and it's existence was confirmed during a series of laboratory tests in the 1960's and 1970's. An osteopath’s patients range from babies and very young children, through to the more mature members of the population. We also treat manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women and sports people. People seek treatment for a wide range of conditions, which may include: repetitive strain injuries, the pain associated with arthritis minor sports injuries postural changes due to pregnancy postural problems from driving or a work strain. Babies are often treated for an asymmetrical head (plagiocephaly) and a restriction in their neck (torticollis). This may be due to the position they were lying in before they were born, or to the trauma of birth. They may also present with feeding problems or as fractious, irritable babies. However, this is by no means an exhaustive list, as patients are assessed on an individual basis, with a full and detailed history of the condition being taken before an examination is carried out. The diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan is then discussed before treating the patient. The osteopath may also follow up with lifestyle advice and exercises. In the case of patients who regularly use a computer and work-station, it may also be appropriate to assess the set-up of their desk. Sitting in the wrong position may be exaggerating the injury! So, how does osteopathy help? One of the basic principles of osteopathy is that “the body is designed to heal itself”. As osteopaths, we encourage this natural healing process by using a variety of techniques. I treat using a branch of osteopathy know as ‘cranial osteopathy’. These techniques work to adjust the balance of the bones through the skull and spine, then through the connective tissue to the whole body. Any stresses and strains that are present, maybe from a whiplash injury, a fall, childbirth or overuse, may be treated with an almost imperceptible touch, designed to work with the body's natural cranio-sacral mechanism. Patients are frequently unaware of the changes going on in their body during a treatment.

60

For information on The Edge Directory ring 01823 663048 or visit www.theedgedirectory.co.uk

Treatment is incredibly gentle; in fact, most patients are surprised at how good they may feel immediately afterwards. Since 1994, all osteopaths in the UK have been regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Today, most osteopaths will have undertaken a 4 year degree, and are required by the GOsC to continue with their studies and renew their registration each year and the GOsC provides registrants with an annual licence to practise. As part of this process, the GOsC checks that osteopaths have current professional indemnity insurance, remain in good health and of good character, and have met mandatory continuing professional development requirements. The title 'osteopath' is protected by law. It is against the law for anyone to call themselves an osteopath unless they are registered with the GOsC, which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety. For more information, please see the website of the GOsC www. osteopathy.org.uk For more information about cranial osteopathy, please go to www.cranial.org.uk For more information about cranial osteopathy please contact me direct on 07734 431624, or at Luson Surgery or via my facebook page Martha Price Daytime and evening appointments are available in Hemyock on Mondays, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Luson Surgery. Please don't hesitate to contact me for a chat, to see if I can help with your symptoms.
