INSITE Constantly Innovating
It was a long time coming. In fact, there was a period of about a year in which I didn’t think it would happen at all. But it has. And I am now typing this from our sparkly new office (I say sparkly when, in fact, I am surrounded by boxes and detritus. But you get the picture.) Like the industry that this magazine is dedicated to serve, we at Demolition magazine are constantly evolving. We originally produced a purely paper magazine; but it is now available in electronic format. In fact, online readers now account for well over half our readership. We have embraced social media, racking up more than 40,000 followers to become the world’s largest demolition presence on Instagram; we launched the world’s first demolition dedicated YouTube channel; and we subsequently launched the world’s first demolition dedicated audio podcast too. The problem, however, was that our previous office was built to house a desk, a chair and a computer. It was noisy, which meant that audio recording was restricted to early mornings and late nights. It also featured large panel windows which were marvellous for natural sunlight but which made any video shot within look weirdly artificial. The new office has none of these challenges. As a result, you will soon be seeing an increase in both the quality AND the quantity of our output. (You can see our new office address opposite). But the innovations don’t stop there. As regular readers will be aware, we were advised to take down our recruitment website Demolition-Jobs.co.uk because it potentially breached General Data Protection Regulations. But together with our publishing partners Chambers Media, we have now relaunched the website in a new GDPR-friendly format and with a new name – DemolitionCareers.co.uk. That new site has just gone live in “beta” format while new jobs are added and while demolition workers register their interest in a possible change of career or employer. And there’s even more. The team at Chambers Media have at long last created a comprehensive online directory of UK demolition contractors called – not surprisingly - demolitiondirectory.co.uk. That standalone website has been created with two aims in mind: firstly, to help UK demolition contractors advertise their capabilities like never before; and secondly, to make it easier for clients to find a demolition contractor in a specific region or with a specific set of skills. Believe it or not, there is more to come. Work is currently underway on a new book entitled Demolition Talk which will make its debut at the DemoExpo 2019 next year. The new Demolition PR service allows contractors and equipment suppliers to leverage our massive audience, journalistic, photography and promotional skills. And the even newer Demolition Web Design has already completed its first demolition website and is about to start work on several more. Cut a long story short, 2019 is going to be a MASSIVE year for us. We look forward to taking you on the journey with us.

An Inspector Calls
STUFF Inspection is more than ticking a box and issuing a certificate. For true safety and compliance, it’s vital to be inspected by a competent person or business on a scheduled basis too. Here, Matthew Bailey, Divisional Manager for Inspection and Certification at HCL Safety explores why inspecting work at height equipment needs to be taken seriously.
During demolition and dismantling, workers can be injured falling from edges, through openings, fragile surfaces and partially demolished floors. Duty holders have a responsibility to assess, eliminate and control the risks of falls from height. Protecting the worker is one of the most important factors to consider when working at height.

To minimise the consequences of a fall, a suitable fall protection system needs to be used. There are usually two fall protection systems to choose from - a fall
stuff arrest system and a fall restraint system; and there are benefits, considerations and specific inspections for each. There are several pieces of legislation out there to emphasise the need to keep your height safety measures in good repair: •

It is important to note, each system in use will need a certain amount of checks for it to be considered compliant and each inspection should be recorded. So that systems are safe, an inspection needs to be checked

The Work at Height Regulation 2005 specifies that equipment used at height is properly maintained for use. Equipment which is exposed to conditions causing deterioration which is likely to result in dangerous situations should be inspected at suitable intervals, as well as each time exceptional circumstances which could jeopardise safety have occurred. Competence Critical There are many levels to an inspection depending on the asset that is being inspected. Visual and mechanical inspections are most typical for most assets - but some may need further inspections such as a load rig to pull test, to assess how the asset might react when pulling 6 kN, or a swage pull test to check how cables are working together.

by a qualified and competent individual. Even a small cut in a lanyard can reduce its strength by up to 40 percent. Therefore, selecting a qualified and experienced height safety engineer, who knows what to look for, is essential.

stuff If an insurer says they can insure you but haven’t worked at height, you need to ask yourself how they know what equipment needs to be checked. There is not only a need for equipment to be used to gain safe access to what is being inspected, but there are also a lot of tools needed to carry out the check. If in doubt about competency, European standard EN 365 sets out clear guidance as to required capabilities of the person carrying out periodic examination of systems as follows: This person should be adept in identifying and assessing the significance of any defects, initiating the corrective action to be taken and should have the necessary skills and resources to do so. A competent person needs to be to be trained either by the manufacturer or authorised representative on specific PPE or other equipment due to its complexity or innovation, or where detailed safety knowledge is needed in the dismantling, reassembly, or assessment of the PPE or other equipment. The individual may also need updated training due to any changes or upgrades in equipment.

stuff A Question of Frequency Compare an equipment at height inspection, to a car MOT. You know that, by law, you must take your car to a garage when your MOT is due. This is to check it is safe to drive and complies with all regulations. This is the same for an at height inspection and should be taken just as seriously. Most height safety assets require a 12-monthly inspection. However, some need to be inspected every six months. Take rope access for example, when used as an anchor point or for abseiling the inspection requirement is every half a year.
As a general guide, HSE advice is that anchorages for fall arrest should be inspected at least every 12 months and energy absorbing lanyards at least every six months or, if used in arduous environments, every three months. The cost of an inspection differs depending on the equipment. The tests needed, differences between posts, and number of bolts for example all affect the time needed to complete an inspection in the safest way. If you are getting quotes which are unusually low, it’s important to question why as the cost is
usually an indication of the amount of time needed to complete the inspection. An inspection is an extremely important piece of work with those who work in the height in safety market. A Question of Safety Specialist contractor the O’Keefe Group has reinforced its No 1 priority of Health and Safety by launching a What If? campaign that tasks its employees and sub-contractors with managing their own personal wellbeing. The campaign, which is reflected in a series of speciallycommissioned posters and leaflets and electronic signage, highlights the need for all members of staff, and partners and stakeholders, to take personal responsibility for their Health and Safety. The visuals feature O’Keefe staff members as “Hazard heroes”, using posters which ask the question “What if your hazard card made all the difference?” to make the Health and Safety message a truly personal one. This is reflected by an increased vigilance over the use of hazard cards on hazard walks,

For the past two years, they have both been working towards their NVQ Level 2 qualification, gaining valuable experience and knowledge from Erith’s site personnel. Missed Opportunities The economic climate has proven volatile over the past 12 months, certainly in the UK, which has undoubtedly had some bearing on the demolition profession, believes Richard Vann of RVA Group. But what other factors have influenced demolition in 2018 and where might opportunities have been missed? He offers his thoughts in this exclusive feature for the magazine.
1. Skills stagnation - It would be wrong to claim the industry doesn’t care about continued professional development – on the contrary; we see some fantastic examples of learning in practice, via official bodies such as the Institute of Demolition Engineers, National Demolition Training Group and the CITB, as well as via firms’ own in-house training programmes. But there appears to be a reluctance to invest in specialist areas such as explosives engineering practitioners. In the UK, there is a definite generational gap, with many talented engineers fast approaching retirement age. The issue of new blood coming into the discipline is something that has been worrying for some time, but I fear 2018 is another year of potential progress lost, in this respect. 2. Heavy industry - There is limited enthusiasm for companies to set up to tackle the ‘big target’ area of heavy industrial demolition. Admittedly power station demolition is complex, but so too are most other sector opportunities, in the absence of the right skill-set or approach. Does it just come down to mindset? There are enough skilled practitioners in the industry, to form

collaborative, expertise-rich teams that can tackle these types of large, high-hazard jobs safely and effectively. A few contractors are experiencing success by entering this sector but there is still room for more to compete in what promises to be a rich pool of potential, longer-term. 3. EU borders - The EU remains the logical place for forward-looking UK contractors to focus their sights. Whilst home-spun opportunities are still arising, working in Europe should be high on the agenda for those who are forecasting 10+ years ahead, even if considering only factors such as the size of the market and the variety of industry-wide assets reaching their end of life. Naturally there could perhaps be an argument for sitting on the fence until Barnier and May finally reach a Brexit agreement but is this just an excuse? Opportunities in the industrial heartlands of the EU have been open for many years and yet the signs of an influx of interest from UK firms have never been apparent. The work exists and it will need to be done by someone. 4. A resistance to sharing - The exchange of information – whether it be the sharing of best practice or learnings from a nonconforming/failed event – still seems to be a mechanism from which the demolition world shies away. There may be those who don’t view this practice as important, and of course there will be scenarios where confidentiality or commercial sensitivity would preclude release of the fine details of an uncontrolled collapse or a loss of containment, for instance. But it is only by exchange of experiences that the industry can learn and improve. Most civil engineering disciplines share both good and bad. Demolition’s fear of disclosure needs to be overcome. 5. A reluctance to champion - Ours is an industry that never appears to champion its own, and I don’t think this is due to a sense of bashfulness. Rather than applauding peers for their innovative methodology, the completion of a successful contract or even the winning of tender, many are quick to claim that it must have been lucky or unfair; or to declare “they can’t make money at that price”. Perhaps a more supportive and mature culture could be something to work towards over the next 12 months?

AR Demolition’s Flying Start It’s been the best-ever start to a year for East Midlands demolition firm AR Demolition, with record turnover and profits in the first half of 2018. In the six month period to July the company saw turnover rise by 54 percent compared to the same period in 2017, with yearon-year gross profit increasing by 18 percent. The figures follow significant investment in new plant and machinery, including £1.5 million spent on three new cutting-edge high reach Kiesel machines last year after previous investment of £1 million in 2016. Following a period of restructuring and stabilisation, AR Demolition’s managing director Richard Dolman said he was happy with the direction in which the company, based in Carlton near Nuneaton, is now moving. “We didn’t perform as well as I’d have liked in 2017, so we’ve worked hard to improve all areas of the business. I’m delighted with how quickly we’ve noticed such a dramatic improvement in financial performance,” Dolman says. “Earlier this year we appointed a new board, including a financial director and a commercial director, and we’re currently looking for an operations director to join the team. We’re introducing some new processes and procedures across all our departments, including some cutting-edge improvements in communications and reporting, as well as strong governance and controls. It’s all had a dramatic
impact on our bottom line. We have seen record turnover and profit for the first half of this year and in turn we have seen strong growth in our forward order book, with much of the custom being repeat business.” In May, AR Demolition was named in the prestigious ‘1000 Companies To Inspire Britain’ report, released annually by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). The report celebrates the UK’s fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). To qualify, company’s revenue between £6 million and £250 million, be operating for at least three years and be among the fastest-growing in their industry sector. Dolman says that he and the leadership team at AR Demolition were keen to develop the company into a new type of demolition contractor; one where quality, safety and innovation – particularly in terms of sustainability and recruitment – were placed at the forefront. “This improved financial performance opens up many opportunities for growth in terms of diversification, new customers, and the continued implementation of innovative techniques. By helping to

advise on and implement better methods of recycling, our industry can make dramatic improvements in the construction sector’s reduction of its carbon footprint. We’re pioneering the first ever master’s degree in demolition at the University of Wolverhampton and we’re working closely with local schools and colleges to offer work experience and placements so we can find and retain the best talent out there,” he concludes. “And by investing in the Kiesel machines, which provides our clients with the benefits of massive operational efficiencies, as well as helping with carbon reduction, we are implementing innovative technology which showcases the future of AR Demolition and the industry as a whole.”

Blazing a Trail The demolition industry’s commitment to training has again been recognised.
Following more than a year of behind-the-scenes work and consultation, a Demolition Operative apprenticeship standard has been uploaded onto the Institute for Apprenticeships and can now be used. The apprenticeship standard was developed by a trailblazer group comprising 10 UK demolition
Typically lasting 24 months and backed by grant funding of £9,000 per apprentice, the new course standard is designed to ensure that demolition operatives arrive on site “work ready” and able to: use hand and power tools to remove internal parts of buildings such as doors, radiators and ceilings; use a range of heating and cutting equipment to burn through different types of metals; and carry out lifting operations working with several types of lifting equipment ranging from hoists to cranes. “What we have now is a recognised standard of what a demolition operative apprentice will be able to do safely after a two-year apprenticeship, says Erith Contractors’ training director Robert Williams. “This means that the industry will be able to call upon a pool of fully-rounded demolition operatives whose skills and capabilities have been thoroughly and independently assessed.” It is expected that the trailblazer group will remain together to help develop the syllabus for a course to deliver this new standard.

Sleepwalking into Accidents The construction industry is a major engine of GDP, generating over £100 billion in economic output and employing over two million people in the UK. However, it suffers more than many industries in terms of accidents and injury. With more than 43 fatal accidents in 2017 (four times more than the average across all industries) and over 5,000 non-fatal accidents it is no wonder that this industry more than others is regarded as high risk. Add to this the other 65,000 work related illness (Stress, Depression, Musculoskeletal
Disorders, Respiratory and Skin conditions) and it is clear that Health and Safety needs to be embedded at every level of the organisation and especially integrated into the planning process. Clearly there are unique and challenging circumstances with construction sites; the dynamic and changing environment and the lack of inherent infrastructure all combine to frustrate the best safety plans. What was safe yesterday may not be as safe today. An unoccupied area yesterday may be occupied today. Multiple

activities concurrently taking place create varying risk each day. Add to this “P&P” (Pressure & Penalties) which are now standard in the industry: if tight deadlines are not met there can be seriously damaging financial penalties and so a six or sevenday week and/or long hours for workers is commonplace. Little wonder then that injury rates are so high. But beyond the hard hats and high vis’, what can be done to reduce this blight upon the industry?

stuff The Fatigue Threat The first is the recognition that fatigue is your greatest enemy. Fatigue impairs your ability to process information, slows your reactions and decreases awareness and attention. In short, it reduces your ability to accurately estimate risk. In fact, it is thought that 20 percent of major road incidents are the result of fatigue and many of the most publicised accidents (Exxon Valdez, Herald of Free Enterprise, Chernobyl, Clapham Junction, Texas City and Challenger) have been linked to tiredness. If you can understand the causes and drivers of accidents (fatigue) and you can assess likely fatigue in shifts/patterns, then you can reduce fatigue and prevent the associated outcomes (accidents) The second is to recognise that long hours/weeks are not the friend of tight deadlines but its nemesis. Accidents create downtime and lost productivity. They CAUSE delays. However, because there is not a 100 percent correlation between fatigue and accidents, there is a tendency to roll the dice when pressure and deadlines encroach. Equipment manufacturer Hyundai is targeting a Top 5 position in the European market and has invested heavily to make this lofty ambition a reality. Mark Anthony reports from the company’s new European headquarters in Tessenderlo, Belgium.
There is a large part of the first floor of Hyundai’s relatively new 81,000 m2 European headquarters that sits silent and empty; strangely at odds with the busy 10,000 m2 equipment demonstration area located close by at which excavators track and slew and wheel loaders dart hither and thither.
But a large empty office suite is not a sign of a company in decline. Rather, it is an indication of a company’s ambitions for growth and expansion. That office space is not presently required. But if the company achieves even a fraction of its lofty ambitions, it most certainly will be. Beyond Criticism A decade or so ago, construction and demolition equipment manufactured in South Korea was largely looked down upon. Perhaps unfairly, it was labelled as lower quality than the machines built by some of their European rivals. Questions were asked about equipment reliability, the availability of

PROFILE parts, the responsiveness of aftersales service, and residual values. By embracing technology, reducing engine emissions and laying to rest concerns over machine reliability, those Korean manufacturers have largely moved beyond such criticisms and it is now the turn of the Chinese manufacturers to have their quality called into question. Same as it ever was. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Japanese manufacturers were the target of similar criticism. Just a few decades on and the likes of Komatsu and Hitachi are seen not just as quality manufacturers but as recognised leaders in their chosen field. So when Hyundai states that it is aiming to be one of the construction equipment market’s Top 5, we dismiss such bold ambitions at our peril. Little to Choose Although equipment manufacturers will unquestionably tell you otherwise, there is very little to choose between most excavators on the market today. And for good reason. Many share the same or similar engines, transmissions and hydraulic system; some even originate from the same factory but are sold in different colours and with different badges. Often, the key differentiator – the things that mark a premium brand from a medium one is a matter of
the bells and whistles; the little extras. Yet even those are remarkably common today. Most excavators above a certain size have air conditioning as standard. Most are offered with a variety of standard, comfort and fully adjustable seats. Some are offered with the peace of mind of telematics systems that monitor functions such as hours

Bridge Busters Call on Okada ada Armac recently did what Armac does best – Took down a bridge over a motorway. While the company once again deployed the big guns, it was a smaller attachment that really caught the eye. Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony saw it in action.
It was scheduled to take 39 hours but it took 16 hours less than that. This was a project carried out by Armac, a company with a formidable reputation in the field of bridge demolition. These were backed by almost as many machines again standing by in a nearby compound and ready to be pressed into action in the event of a breakdown. Strong Support Taking centre stage on this project was Armac’s Caterpillar 374F excavator equipped with a seriously large hydraulic breaker. And yet it is a smaller item of equipment – an attachment, in fact – that really catches the eye. Armac recently took delivery of an Okada ORC 280A rotating pulveriser from UK importer LDH Attachments and this project is its first outing. Sporting a box-fresh blue and white livery, the attachment is playing very much a support role – processing large sections of concrete broken out from the bridge deck – but it still manages to shine. The 2,425 kg unit delivers a 900 kN crushing force and benefits from an incredibly fast jaw speed that allows it

Built in the 1990’s at a cost of around £35m, Colonial House in Quayside, Chatham, has been empty for the last few years awaiting its fate. The red-brick fronted three-storey building, its basement and associated

car parking is currently being redeveloped by Persimmon Homes, to provide a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, plus three and four-bedroom homes, within the Colonial Wharf waterfront development.

ON SITE Site clearance and demolition is well underway, and being handled by Aylesham, Kentbased Goody Demolition. But it’s been far from straightforward as the 32-week project has thrown up some interesting challenges along the way, as site manager and high-reach machine operator, Paul Hougham, explains: “The building is a heavily reinforced concrete structure with an outer brick skin and a steel roof,” he says. “And given the amount of steel buried within the concrete, it was probably engineered to withstand an earthquake.” Steel Sweepstake The on-site team have been so surprised by the amount of steelwork within, that a friendly sweepstake is taking place among the Goody team. Best estimates of what the building is likely to yield are already in excess of 4,000 tonnes of steel. “This is one of those buildings that was never going to fall down, nor come apart easily,” he says. “And this job is a meticulous and methodical process of dismantling that demands decent fire-power.”

“The height of the building is no problem to our EC300E,” HOugham explains. “But with the base machine being a 30-tonner, it does limit the size of attachment. The high working envelope dictates that we can only use a breaker or a concrete cracker from a 20-tonne excavator, so we’re working with smaller sections, but it does mean pieces are much more manageable.” He says that the heavier EC480E makes light work of separating concrete from steel, allowing sorting to take place with 21-tonne excavators equipped with grabs.
With hydraulic locking pins and a cradle to store the high-reach front-end when not in use, it takes less than 10 minutes to swap between the standard boom and three-piece high-reach configuration. “It really is a versatile piece of kit,” Hougham continues. “And when the standard boom is fitted, the EC300E benefits from a really generous working envelope – having a straight boom instead of a curved boom really does give us much more, and this boosts productivity.”

That fire-power comes in two key components. The first part of the process is high-reach demolition using a Volvo EC300E excavator equipped with a Kocurek threepiece boom. With a main boom of 7.8 metres, an intermediate 2.15 metre section and a 6.25 metre demolition stick, it affords a generous working envelope with a forward reach of 12 metres and a working height of 21 metres. The second element is a Volvo EC480E excavator working at

The firm has a number of Volvo excavators in its fleet and has praise for the service and support available from GB dealer SMT GB. “When Goody Demolition was first bought by its current owners, there was a Volvo in the business, and that’s proved to be a good introduction to a well-built range of excavators,” he says. “And we’ve added more Volvo’s ever since.” With 3,500 hours under its belt, the EC300E has so far proved itself a sound investment for the firm. Reliability, comfort and performance have never been questioned by its operator. “It’s a heavy enough machine and is well-suited to this type of demolition work,” he adds. “And having a tilting cab does make long days at the controls a much more comfortable experience.” Using the high-reach machine and working from the top, Paul Hougham is systematically
lowering the building by weakening the floors and their supporting pillars. This lets the team lower sections of floor on a layer-by-layer basis, until concrete slabs are within reach of the more powerful, heavier EC480E. The impressive reach also lets the EC300E stand back at a safe distance, which keeps the machine and its operator in a safer environment. “We’ve tried a nibbler, but the density of steel within the concrete is doing such a good job of holding it all up, that the only way to make initial progress is with a hydraulic breaker,” he says. “But there’s plenty to go at as we bring the layers down.” Concrete is being crushed on-site and used for bunding and fill material, with steel being sorted and cut, ready for disposal. The waterfront building also occupies a jetty, and this is to be cleared, leaving the jetty as a viewing plaza within the redevelopment. And once the main structure

of the building has been taken down, the firm will also need to dismantle the basement. “Being close to the waterfront, we could also face a few challenges with water management, as the project moves forward,” he says. “Demolition is one of few jobs where material content and dismantling is an unknown process – you don’t know what you’re going to really find, until you get stuck in.”

Scrapping and Snapping Rye Demolition is taking down the historic Kodak factory in Harrow, North London. And it is calling upon a heavy duty shear supplied by ECY Haulmark to spearhead the process.
Rye Demolition has earned a reputation for its ability to tackle large and complex demolition projects. And the company’s already impressive portfolio of works will be enhanced still further by a two-year contract to oversee the demolition and ground remediation of the former Kodak factory in Harrow, North London. Chicken & Egg Kodak’s first facility to open outside the US was located in Harrow, on a seven-acre plot of land. Opening in 1891, the site

was originally used to develop photographs and kept around 100 chickens on site to supply the egg white required to coat the paper. As the factory expanded, production of film rolls started, along with the manufacture of photographic paper. By the 1950s Kodak was the largest manufacturing plant in the British Commonwealth and employed around 6,000 staff. With the arrival of digital photography, production of

ON SITE photographic film ceased in 2005. The closure of the facility was announced in April 2016, and full production ceased in December 2016. A key challenge for Rye demolition is the complexity of cutting up and removing the myriad of redundant turbine and lubrication systems, alternators, control panels and miles and miles of metal flue and piping which remain inside the huge building. Prior to starting work on the former boiler room at Kodak, Rye Demolition managing director Simon Barlow knew that a tough hydraulic scrap shear was going to be required to tackle the project. Barlow approached Warrington-based attachment specialists ECY Haulmark Limited at the Hillhead quarry show back in June. ECY recommended the
VTN CI5000R scrap shear as the perfect tool for the job. The VTN CI-R series has recently been re-designed and remodelled specifically for heavier weight excavators, working in the processing of heavy duty metals and structures, with emphasis being focused on the well-arranged assembly and top quality hydraulic components. The jaw type and wide mouth opening have been designed for grabbing and cutting allsizes of materials. Thanks to a dedicated speed valve, the CI-R shears also optimise cycle times. The piercing tip is made of one unique piece, with four-times replaceable blades. The new jaw alignment guides together with the fixed jaw fulcrum pin afford precise material cutting; while the rotation system allows operators to gain a perfect position of the material to be processed.

Dipper-Mounted The five tonne CI5000-R shear has been dipper-mounted onto Rye Demolitions Hitachi Zaxis 490LCH excavator to make maximum use of the attachment’s 890 tonne cutting force and allowing it to cut steel with thicknesses of more than 60 mm. The machine is being operated on the Kodak site by Rye Demolition’s Graham Baxter. He reports that the shear has been a fantastic addition to the new Hitachi and is proving invaluable in processing the many types of metal coming out of the factory. “We have a couple of burners on site too, helping with the bigger metal structures,” Baxter concludes. “But generally the shear is coping with most of it and performing very well indeed.”

Small but Perfectly Formed CJ Charlton Group was forged in an area of the UK with the greatest demolition contractor density outside the nation’s capital. But against stiff competition, the company is building an impressive and growing reputation. Mark Anthony reports.
There is a part of the south of England where Hampshire snuggles up against Berkshire that is home to an unfeasibly large number of demolition contractors including some of the best-known names in the industry. CG Comley’s yard is a hop and a skip from the headquarters of R Collard Ltd. Workers from J. Mould (Reading) can probably see the HQ of local rival Shorts Group if they squint hard enough. Such a density of demolition firms in such close proximity could have led to a dog-eat-dog hotbed of rivalry, back-biting and price undercutting. And yet, the rivalry that exists locally is of an unexpectedly friendly variety, according to Chris Charlton,
founder and managing director of CJ Charlton Group. “I went to school with Toby Comley of CG Comley. Jay Mould at J. Mould is a close friend of mine,” he says. “And I was at a firework display with Robert Collard of R Collard just a few nights ago.” Breaking bread with Robert Collard should come as no surprise. Chris Charlton cut his demolition teeth at R Collard Ltd before making the bold leap to go it alone just a few years ago. But today they meet not as employer and employee; they meet as peers. Instafamous It comes as no surprise to see that Chris Charlton is wearing what appears to be a box-fresh hard hat; that his high vis’ vest is pristine as if newly-unwrapped; or that the jeans he is wearing look expensive and that they fit.

While he might be playing catchup with some of his local rivals in terms of demolition experience, he could teach all of them a thing or two about social media engagement. He is a regular contributor on both LinkedIn and Facebook and his Instagram feed switches seamlessly between shots of works completed, machines operated or – increasingly – of Chris himself sporting one dapper outfit or another. It is easy to dismiss such things as idle vanity. And it is virtually impossible to tell whether or not it actually helps demolition firms to win work. But make no mistake. Chris Charlton’s online and social media profile has put is company firmly and squarely on the demolition map. It has allowed his relatively young company to appear much larger than perhaps it is. This is a
ON SITE company that marries old-school values with a modern approach to marketing and advertising to punch above its weight with prospective clients. Doing It Right Although it is far from scientific, I have my own unspoken way of auditing the quality of a demolition company. If they are willing to accept a site visit from a camera-wielding journalist with little or no notice, they obviously have nothing to hide. If their activities are largely invisible to local residents and businesses, they are obviously doing things correctly. And if they apply the same levels of professionalism to a toilet block as they might a toilet block, they are a contractor to be taken seriously. Demolition magazine finds CJ Charlton demolishing the singlestorey Entomology Hut that lies in the midst of the sprawling Forest Research Centre at Farnham near Guildford in
Surrey. The location itself is tucked away. The site is tucked away within it. And yet it is pleasing to note that the site has been secured and surrounded on all sides by Heras fencing to isolate the demolition activities from the environmental research going on all around. Equally refreshing is the fact that the sign-in process is compulsory yet relaxed; thorough yet comparatively brief.
This is not a large site. This is not a large company. But the way in which the operation is being run has all the trappings you might expect to find on a site of one of CJ Charlton’s larger local rivals. “I have enormous admiration for people like Robert Collard and John Mould and, in my own small way, I want to emulate what they do,” concludes managing director Chris Charlton. “From the very beginning, I wanted to do things right. I want our paperwork to be as professional as possible. I want our men to be trained to the highest possible level. I’ll happily admit that I got it wrong. Robore Cuts Ltd is based in Mitcham where south London rubs up against Surrey. This is my backyard. My manor. I should have known better. I had previously dismissed the firm as one of a number of drilling and sawing companies that blur the lines between equipment hirer and subcontractor. ON SITE Never in my wildest dreams did I picture Robore Cuts as a frontline demolition company. But, as I said, I was wrong. Not only is the company a fully-fledged demolition company; but on a recent project in Oxfordshire, Robore proved that it is capable of tackling delicate demolition works that even the most proficient demolition contractors would have to think twice about. Constant Change Sitting in almost 300 hectares south of the historic city of Oxford and falling within the shadow of the nearby Didcot power station, the Harwell campus is home to organisations, institutions and businesses shaping the world of today and tomorrow. could have been tackled with an excavator equipped with a hydraulic breaker, such an approach was not even considered. Instead, Robore Cuts opted for a low noise, minimal dust and virtually zero vibration approach. Due to the sensitive nature of the area, the company also employed dust suppression systems in the form of Generac water mist cannons. But there’s more to that professionalism than meets the eye. In fact, the behindthe-scenes professionalism demonstrated on this site actually inspired a recent episode of Demolition News Radio*.
The next sign of a company that knows its stuff is the fact that the project runs seamlessly without so much as a word or instruction from the contract manager Lee Whelan as he shows me around the wellorganised site. The operator in the Komatsu excavator tackling the higher level demolition does so slowly and meticulously,
gently lowering sections of the roof to the ground. Behind him, a remote controlled Brokk demolition robot is processing the arisings before the arrival of an on-highway tipper that will remove those arisings for further processing elsewhere. And when that tipper arrives, it is guided into place without instruction and direction. It is
Robore’s contracts manager Lee Whelan explained how he had earned considerable praise from the client and main contractor on this particular project through his personal approach to RAMS. “The client originally wanted hundreds and hundreds of pages covering the project from every conceivable angle; analysing potential risks and hazards in microscopic detail. They wanted a document that satisfied all the legislative requirements but which would be read only by someone with a lot of time on their hands,” he says. “I was more than happy to produce a massive document to tick all the regulation boxes; but I also suggested that we produce a stripped-down and largely pictorial version. The average demolition operative has neither the time nor the inclination to read hundreds of pages as part of his working day.” Science & Technology That forward-thinking approach to the site paperwork has been welcomed by the client. ON SITE impact approach to the demolition works themselves has been welcomed even more. The company is working alongside the Community Wood Recycling project, a social enterprise that uses waste timber to help bring people who are out of work back into work by giving them carpentry skills. By working with this organisation, Robore has seen an increase in the percentage of reused timber which helps the company meet its waste reduction targets. “Because of the nature of the work that takes place at Harwell Campus, there are highly qualified engineers and scientists in many of the buildings that surround the demolition works. But they have all been fascinated by the demolition work that we’re doing,” Whelan says. “It’s amazing that people involved in innovation and the planning behind things like space flight are interested in the demolition process. But I guess it’s just something they don’t get to see every day. River City Minimises Dust Cereus, the construction waste transport operator, has equipped its tipper fleet with Kinesis telematics as part of a drive to reduce the environmental impact on the streets of London.
The web-based system gives Cereus live and historic vehicle tracking data that is used to optimise utilisation, boost productivity and improve customer service. Cereus has a number of contracts in the building refurbishment sector, transporting waste following strip-out, fit out and demolition work. Molson Evolution Continues A&Y Equipment has announced that, in line with the current evolution of the Molson Group, the company will be rebranding as Molson Compact Equipment. A big part of this change will be the addition of Kobelco mini excavators to the Molson Compact offering. RIDGWAY goes shopping Following a threeyear consolidation period, Shropshirebased plant hire company, RIDGWAY Rentals has made a £17.5 million investment in new machines to cope with current and future demand.

According to RIDGWAY, world demand for construction equipment and the weak pound has meant that a large quantity of the UK’s used equipment has been exported abroad, creating a shortage of equipment to rent - just as the construction industry begins to gain momentum. Furthermore, the company highlights the fact that the majority of machines ordered
are manufactured in the UK: JCB at its Uttoxeter plant; and Komatsu’s UK plant in ChesterLe-Street, near Newcastle Upon Tyne where the company produces its range of hydraulic excavators. The orders were placed following a number of months of negotiation and have been arriving at RIDGWAY’s main depot near Oswestry in Shropshire in a steady stream, usually to go straight out on hire. “All our new equipment is of the latest technology and includes the latest emission
control. The machines also comply with the latest Health and Safety legislation including all round vision for the operator via intelligent camera systems,” concludes RIDGWAY managing director Stuart Jones. “Our job is ensuring that our customers have access to the latest technology so that they can be more productive and operate safely, damaging the environment as little as possible - you can only do this by having the latest equipment. A number of the new dozers and excavators are also be equipped with laser-controlled GPS technology.”

Flannery Goes Hybrid P. Flannery Plant Hire (Oval) Ltd has become the first UK hirer to take delivery of the innovative EU Stage IV compliant Komatsu HB215LC-3 hybrid excavator. Boom Time for Volvo The new Volvo multi demolition boom for EC380E HR high reach excavators enables customers to use heavier tools according to the manufacturer, boosting productivity and profitability. The new multi demolition boom for Volvo EC380E HR excavators enables customers to maximise machine utilisation and get more out of their machine. In the straight position, the multi demolition boom provides an industry-best tool weight capacity of 4.3 tonnes at 15.2 metres with a 360 degree working range. This means customers can use heavier tools with their demolition digging boom set at a height of up to four storeys. The new boom can be also configured for “double-bending”, allowing operators to work deeper and closer to the machine to depths of up to 10 metres. The multi demolition boom fits to the patented Volvo modular joint system, using a hydraulic full pin connection mechanism to ensure a rigid connection between the base machine and the digging boom or highreach boom. The operator can change the position of the boom from straight to bent from the comfort of the cab within a matter of minutes. “As buildings are growing taller, there is an increasing demand for underground demolition,

X Marks Spot for ART Demolition A Lincolnshire contractor has bought one of the first demolition specification JCB X Series excavators, citing its durability, technology and quietness as key factors in its purchasing decision.
Lincoln-based A.R.T. Demolition has purchased the new generation JCB excavator for dismantling duties on its projects across the Midlands. Supplied by dealer TC Harrison JCB, the JCB 220X model has been configured for the arduous demolition environment with the addition of cab protection and heavy undercarriage guards. “We choose JCB wherever possible as we are proud to support a great British manufacturer. The reliability is excellent and the back-up from our dealer is second to none,” says A.R.T. Demolition Managing Director Adam Thurlby. “We know just

KIT TALK how much detail has gone into this machine so we knew it was destined to be special. The finished version does not disappoint. I am a big fan of the existing JS models but this has been thoroughly overhauled and taken to the next level.” This is a view shared by operator, Chris Bills. “We are mainly using the new JCB on secondary demolition applications and it is performing well with a range of attachments including a concrete pulveriser. I’ve already put the machine through its paces and I’m impressed,” Bills says. “The cab layout is fantastic, the level of technology is incredibly sophisticated and I could not believe just how quiet the 220X is.” The brand new 220X joins an extensive line-up of JCB excavators in the A.R.T. Demolition fleet. These include the compact 86C-1, three JS220 models, a JS330 and two flagship JS370 machines which weigh in at 42-tonnes following
the addition of heavy-duty modifications, fitted by Newarkbased MCB Brothers which also provided the additional protection for the X Series model. The brand new JCB 220X, 20-tonne tracked excavator model, launched earlier this year, has been designed to provide maximum operator comfort, durability and reliability in operation. Over a four-year development period, JCB has undertaken a programme of intensive component and product testing, to achieve increased levels of build quality and reliability for customers in this advanced new machine. The new X Series machine features a 15 percent larger cab with integral ROPS structure, reduced noise levels, simple user interface and stronger side doors for greater strength and increased protection. They also benefit from a central main boom mounting for increased digging accuracy and durability, and a 200mm wider

The Rotolance 1000 uses pressures up to 2,500 bar to quickly and precisely remove a shallow layer of concrete, leaving a superior bonding surface. The Rotolance 2500 works at pressures up to 1,000 bar and leaves a smooth surface when cleaning or removing hard paint, rust and rubber from areas such as ship hulls and storage tanks. KIT TALK Rye Demolition Breaks New Ground Hertfordshire-based Rye Demolition has taken delivery of a new Okada 3600 hydraulic hammer to further supplement its extensive and dedicated equipment fleet. The breaker, which is suitable for carriers in the 25 to 38 tonne operating weight class, was supplied by Okada’s UK importer, LDH Attachments. This order marks the latest stage in a partnership between Rye Demolition and LDH Attachments that has previously seen the supply of other
Okada attachments together with Dehaco-branded dust suppression equipment for which LDH is also the UK dealer. The Okada 3600 is one of two Okada hydraulic hammers offered for sale by LDH Attachments (the other being the larger 6000 model that is

suitable for carriers in the 37 to 60 tonne operating weight class). The Okada 3600 weighs in at 2,610 kg and delivers and impact rate between 300 and 650 blows/minute. It features anti blank firing and is offered with an automatic lubrication option for greater protection and enhanced uptime.

KIT TALK Central Intelligence Central Demolition Ltd of Bonnybridge, Scotland, has invested in another package of Volvo excavators and loading shovels, including their largest shovel yet in the guise of an L150H. “In our opinion, Volvo excavators and loading shovels are top-class products in terms of reliability, performance and operator acceptance,” says Murray Brodie, Central Demolition’s Fleet and Plant Service Manager. “For example, our ten-year old L90F has clocked up over 21,000 hours on its original powertrain components and hasn’t put
a foot wrong, so choosing an L90H last year and this latest package of Volvo machines as our workload increases, was a simple one.” The line- up of new arrivals includes a 14-tonne EC140E complete with dozer blade, a 22-tonne EC220E and a 30-tonne EC300E equipped with secondary demolition options.
Two L110H loading shovels have also been supplied and the company’s largest Volvo wheeled loader to date – an L150H complete with 4.5m³ rehandling bucket. Both the EC140E and L110H will be deployed on processing materials at Central Demolition’s Bonnybridge recycling facility whilst the remaining machines will be used on demolition contracts across the UK. KIT TALK Good Things Come in Small Packages Following the introduction of the SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10 at the beginning of the year, Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) has announced the launch of the all-new SK350DLC-10 – the manufacturer’s smallest machine designed exclusively for the demolition sector. Despite its smaller size, the versatile new model incorporates many of the same features as the larger models, which are designed to aid the safe and quick assembly/ disassembly of attachments and maintenance, easy transportation between projects and significant cost savings. Kobelco has long been a market leader for demolition equipment in Japan and launched its first demolition machines to the European market earlier this year. Like the SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10, the new SK350DLC-10 features the Kobelco-developed NEXT system. This is a common base machine with dedicated attachments for both high elevation demolition work and breaking up foundations. The attachments can be easily changed on site. The SK350DLC-10’s NEXT ultrahigh attachment is best suited to the demolition of multistorey buildings from ground level – its ultra-long attachment configuration enables it to work to a maximum height of 21

The machine’s separate boom configuration is ideal for demolishing the lower floors of buildings where the concrete is at its thickest – the maximum working depth of the SK350DLC-10 is 6,320 mm. Demolition job sites provide challenging conditions for machinery so the SK350DLC10’s boom attachments are reinforced for increased durability, longevity and reduced structural fatigue. Their block structure also simplifies the assembly/disassembly process in order to reduce downtime on site. The machine’s attachments are connected by hooking the upper (backside) pin to the opposite pins on the lower side – the pressure release to pin fixing can be completed quickly and safely. All attachment joints have the hydraulic piping mounted to the side and adopt a multi-coupler system for easy access, and maintenance from ground level. system is the low storage height of the ultra-high attachment when collapsed. This attachment is designed with the jib and arm cylinders crossed over the shorter inter arm, while the back of the arm remains flat. As a result, the height of the attachment in its stored position is approximately 2m, which means that it can be transported between projects on a standard trailer, saving significant logistical costs. The SK350DLC-10 shares the same turbo-charged Stage IVcompliant engine and hydraulic system as the SK350LC-10 for high performance and low fuel consumption. Three work modes are available to further aid fuel efficiency: H-mode for heavy working; S-mode for balancing work volume with fuel consumption; and Eco-mode for prioritising fuel efficiency over work volume. MMC Southern – which has its head office in Cossington, near Leicester – has welcomed its fourth Terex Finlay J-1175 from Finlay Plant SW, part of the Finlay Group of companies. The jaw crusher is currently powering through 300 tonnes of granite per hour at Carnsew Quarry in Cornwall. “The Terex Finlay J-1175 is definitely capable of processing
more material, but we have to make sure that the secondary plant can keep up with it. The jaw crushers are just great machines and competitively priced,” says Denver McCullough, one of the four directors of MMC Southern. “We also have a great working relationship with Finlay Plant SW. We’ve had a lot of machines from them over the past 20 years and never been disappointed.”

Grease is the Word Epiroc has introduced a new Bio chisel paste for hydraulic breaker use in environmentally sensitive applications. Used to grease the wear bushings in hydraulic breakers, Epiroc’s new Bio chisel paste helps prevent bushing wear and prolong working tool life. The formulation is based on special synthetic esters that are easily biodegradable and is approved by the European commission for use in environmentally sensitive applications. Inside a hydraulic breaker, the ambient working temperature reaches up to 1,100°C under extreme load. In these conditions the standard greases available in the market will liquefy and disappear. Without adequate lubrication, bushings suffer accelerated wear, thereby increasing the cost of breaker operation. Tailor made for hydraulic breakers, Epiroc Bio chisel paste gives excellent performance across a wide range of temperatures, from –30°C up to +1100°C. Epiroc Bio chisel paste has high load carrying characteristics with very good separation capacity. It helps reduce breaker operating costs by reducing bushing wear and working tool breakage. High water resistance makes it suitable for underwater applications, and the product offers a high level of corrosion protection. For the breaker to benefit from the full protection offered by Epiroc Bio chisel paste, lubrication should be performed at regular intervals and care should be taken not to over-lubricate. Epiroc Bio chisel paste is suitable for automatic lubrication on Epiroc hydraulic breakers with ContiLubeTM II Micro or ContiLubeTM II, or for manual greasing with a grease gun on Epiroc or any other breakers. KIT TALK M&M Joins OilQuick Club M&M Demolition has become the latest UK demolition company to recognise the time-saving and health and safety benefits of the OilQuick coupler system.
M&M managing director Danny Wall first approached Warrington-based attachment specialists ECY Haulmark back in the summer of 2017 with a view to installing the OilQuick automatic quick coupler on the company’s Hitachi Zaxis 350 machines. At the same time M&M took delivery of a VTN MD410 selector grab and a VTN FP30 concrete processor from ECY Haulmark to complement its new thirty-five ton Hitachi machines. More recently M&M Demolition placed an order for a Furukawa FXJ375 hydraulic breaker to add to the company’s arsenal of attachments. The breaker was fitted with an OilQuick OQ80 attachment bracket to complement the Hitachi 350 machines. That hydraulic breaker was pressed into immediate service at a site at Overton Road in Brixton, South London, where the contractor is overseeing an eleven-week project for the local authority adjacent to St. Johns Angel Town primary school. The overall works involve the demolition and ground remediation of former boilers rooms that are being demolished to basement level. With a small pedestrian walkway next to the redundant building, the area had been deemed unsafe for local people to walk through as the growing presence of squatters in the building was causing public safety concerns for the police.

KIT TALK “With this being a small site it’s great to be able to have just the one Hitachi 350 fitted with an OilQuick coupler onsite, as we can bring along a selection
of attachments fitted with the OQ bracket. We can get the project completed in a fraction of the time it would have taken making manual attachment changes. With OilQuick we can react quickly with one machine on site,” says M&M Demolition’s senior project manager, Karl Larcombe. “It’s just such an efficient way of working, a total no brainer. I estimate this project would

have taken another two weeks to complete without the OilQuick system installed on the machine and attachments.” This is a view shared by M&M Demolition operator Steve Perry. “Life as a machine operator is so much better when you have OilQuick on your machine. The new breaker has also been performing really well during this project,” he concludes. “I like this breaker a lot. It’s as good if not better than any other breaker I have used before and having been in demolition along time, I have tried most brands at one time or another.”
