INSITE The Gold Standard

Five years ago, there was no such thing as Demolition TV. The Demolition News Radio podcast had not yet been invented and the DemolitionCareers.co.uk was nothing but a twinkle in our eye. I hadn’t yet written the books Breaking into Demolition or Demolition 2051. And it would be another two years, almost to the day, before the global demolition community unified in sadness and respect at the tragic loss of four demolition workers at the Didcot A Power Station. Into that simpler and post-recession time came the firstever edition of this magazine. It was created in a fit of pique and – as a result – with a degree of haste. But we had done our homework. We recognised that by harnessing social media, we could reach a global audience. We knew that by utilising video (and, later, audio) we could increase the value we could deliver to readers. We knew that by drawing content from across international borders and from within and without the various trade bodies, we could help increase the sum of industry knowledge. And, perhaps more than anything else, we knew that demolition is the job that demolition people do but it is not what defines them as individuals. So we eschewed the usual “big digger” front covers favoured by our rivals. We regularly included “lifestyle” articles on cars, technology and clothing. We were the first to address the issue of mental health awareness (including the provision of free advertising for the Mates in Mind charity that does such sterling work in this sector). We were the first to feature smaller and even start-up demolition contractors because we firmly believe that they too should have a voice. And we were unabashed in offering our opinions upon the issues facing the industry at large. Here we are five years later. The original “strictly black” front cover has this time given way to a gold one to mark our fifth anniversary. If that seems immodest, then you clearly haven’t been watching us closely enough! We came into a mature market sector with one aim, and that aim was to “own” the demolition media space. That remains our aim to this day, but that goal moves closer with each passing day. And I can say all of this without fear of sounding like an egotist because, ultimately, we just created the platform. It is you – our readers – that have pulled us in new and exciting directions, that have pushed us to embrace new delivery methods, that have forced us to continually innovate and evolve. So while this special gold issue has been produced to mark the making of the first Demolition magazine, it is celebrating what you all have since made it.

Watch the Horizon

STUFF Carl Benfield spent 16 years as a British Army Officer and 11 years in commerce. He now runs Refresh Business, a consultancy specialising in strategic direction. In this first of three articles, he examines the importance of goal setting in the demolition industry. While a fast-moving market can favour the agile entrepreneur of the start-up (at least in the short-term), how can more established companies ensure that they have a sustainable model that will adapt with the times?

Demolition can be a fickle business. Forever at the mercy of the economy, the labour market, delays in planning requirements, and let’s not forget protecting local people, businesses and wildlife. Overlay the uncertainties caused by Brexit (sorry, I had to mention it), and it becomes very confusing, very quickly. So how do you take all this into account and still develop something that approaches a business plan rather than constantly living hand to mouth?

5

If you’re a pictures-person like me, you’ll know the value in “seeing” the situation from a different perspective, so in this article, I’m going to use seafaring as a metaphor for running a business in uncertain times. If you’re a landlubber at heart, don’t worry, I’ll promise not to make you seasick. If things are running sweetly for you now, remember that a good sailor will tell you that you should use any period of calm to check, and then recheck everything so that when a storm comes, you’re ready without needing to panic. Adverse Weather So, step number one - check the weather (market). Before you know where you are going, you have to know where you are, and in our metaphor, that means what kind of boat we are in. Are you part of a site services group, a family company, a sole trader or

stuff what? It seems obvious, but understanding your position will affect how realistic your goal can be - a local family-run company is unlikely to double its turnover within a few years without acquiring other businesses. There is a decades-old process that derives from analysis of the American Air Force in Korea. The Americans could not understand why the inferior enemy aircraft could perform so well against the superior American planes. The breakthrough in thinking defined the OODA loop - Observe Orientate, Decide and Act and the first part of this -”observe” was vital. The enemy planes had a bigger cockpit canopy that allowed the pilot to see much more around him, so they were able to orientate more quickly and so on (For the spotters out there, this is why modern jet canopies appear very bulbous). Going back to our sailing metaphor, we often hear people

talk about things “not being on our radar”. The truth is we often have our radar switched off, or we aren’t looking at the screen. Where are we going? So step number two - where are you? If you’ve ever been sailing, or on a ferry in rough seas, you may have heard the advice to stare at the horizon. In turbulent times, one can say the same about business. It is very easy, and indeed tempting, to be distracted by all the noise going on immediately around you. We’re constantly bombarded by experts saying that we need to do more advertising, put content on social media; that we need to develop a niche offering; that we need to diversify; there is always something “urgent”. Now all of these things may be true, but we need to keep them in their place. Just as if we were at sea, we should be aware of the

6

conditions around us, and even interact with them, but we must never lose sight of the horizon, or things can go bad, very quickly. Hence step number three - don’t get distracted. Avoiding Distraction On the horizon of our business should be our goal. In our metaphorical picture, we might call this the harbour. This may not be our ultimate destination, but it could be just one of a series of places we stop at on our voyage. In the same way, our business goals could be one year, five-year or ten-year. They could all be very different, or very similar - perhaps even the same. But they all need to be realistic. Confidently stating “we turned over £1 million last year, so next year we want to achieve £1.3m” is just noise based on ego. There is rarely a good justification for these aspirations without using

stuff hard facts, so we might more usefully ask relevant questions applicable to this example such as: • Will the local market grow by 30 percent? • Are there any large projects due to get planning? • What is the local plan regarding brownfield development? • Do we need to also increase our marketing spend by 30 percent or is the link between marketing and clients coupled differently? • Do we have the staff to manage 30 percent uplift, and if we need to bring in more, how will that impact on cashflow and profit? • What are the competitive threats to our business? Are

other operators going to use different technologies to increase their market share? Now, the information we gathered in our market analysis is never complete and utterly reliable. Like being at sea in a storm (at least before satellite navigation) it may not be totally clear where you are, or what is around you. Sometimes the best guess is all that is available, but it is important to record this in order to validate the accuracy of the guess when performance is reviewed. At other times it can be relatively straightforward to find out, say, what your competitors are charging. I’m not going to suggest what your business goals should

be - there are too many readers and too many variables. But I am going to challenge you to make them SMART - specific, measurable, agreed upon, realistic and time-based. So step number four - where do you want to be? Getting to the next harbour (business goal) is increasingly going to feel like a race. Understanding long-term changes will affect how your services are configured. For now, check the weather, understand where you are, don’t get distracted in focussing on where you want to be. In the next issue, we’ll look at how to get there.

Into the Blue Blue Group has announced the appointments of Ian Webber, Stuart Hardiman and Iain Colquhoun at the Blue Spares, Blue Southern and Blue Scotland divisions respectively. The appointments of the new roles reflect the successful and busy year Blue has had, with notable events such as the acquisition of Murray Plant and the integration of Blue Fuchs into Blue’s regional businesses, as well as Blue Spares. Furthermore, Blue Spares has undergone a major renovation to further strengthen their customer support. The recent investment at Blue Spares has been driven

by Ian Webber who formally took on the role of General Manager at Blue Spares on the 1 November after previously being Procurement Director. Webber joined Blue Spares in July 2017, having worked at HSS Hire for thirteen years in procurement and commercial roles. Blue Southern has appointed Stuart Hardiman as General Manager, a position he will formally take up from 1 January 2019. Having previously been Service Manager at Blue Southern since 2014, Stuart has built a wealth knowledge and experience which will help drive continued growth and success within the company. It is also an exciting time at Blue Scotland as it recruits Iain Colquhoun who officially took up the role of General Manager at Blue Scotland in December. He has previously worked in a number of senior management positions within a variety of industries, where he developed and implemented effective staff development plans. These plans not only enhanced the businesses’ returns, but also the quality of staff members working within the business.

The Truth Will Out Public perception is that journalists lie all the time. But is that the case? Demolition magazine sent editor Mark Anthony to undergo a polygraph test to find out and to reveal how such testing might be deployed within the demolition sector. I am sat in a chair in the smart and well-appointed offices of C&D Demolition Consultants Limited in the picturesque village of Wombourne, South Staffordshire. I am staring at a blank wall. I have a blood pressure band around my left arm while the tips of two fingers of my right hand are hooked to a computer via a pair of sensors. There are two bands around my torso: one around my stomach; the other around my chest. These are linked to the same computer. And beneath my bottom is a pad monitoring my movement.

Limited. Rumble reports that around 85 percent of his work is in infidelity cases where he uses his advanced equipment to substantiate claims that a spouse or partner has been unfaithful. However, there is a small but growing application for his services and this technology within the realm of employment, particularly amongst financial institutions keen to confirm the trustworthiness of a would-be employee.

But this is not some new-fangled training aid devised by C&D Demolition Consultants. And although it might look like it, it is not an instrument of torture either. This is a polygraph system and I am about to find out not so much IF journalists lie but, rather, whether we can do so convincingly. Growing Application The man conducting the test is Mike Rumble, a former police officer and now a private polygraph tester operating as Lie Detector Test UK Services

14

“Together with drink and drug tests, pre-employment polygraph tests are being used increasingly within the city as an additional safeguard when employing people,” Rumble explains. “Many financial institutions now have a polygraph test written into their terms and conditions of employment.” Admittedly, such measures seem excessive for the demolition sector. But scanning the

stuff archives of DemolitionNews reveals several incidents in which employees found to be effectively “buying work” with suicidal bid prices that only came to light when the administrators were at the gates. There have been countless incidents of scrap metal thefts perpetrated by employees, and more than a few cases in which work was effectively being diverted to a separate company for the financial gain of someone other than the employer. Having now been through a polygraph test myself, it is safe to say that most of these cases could and would have been prevented had polygraph testing been utilised.

STUFF Mirror Signal Manoeuvre Have you ever looked in the rear-view mirror of your car and found a police car directly behind you. Suddenly and seemingly without prompting, your hands move to the 10 to 2 position on the steering wheel; your foot eases up on the accelerator to ensure that you’re at least one mile per hour inside the local speed limit; and the “mirror, signal, manoeuvre” mantra plays over and over in your head, even though you know you have done nothing wrong. A polygraph test is that, magnified. I am among friends, I am not being questioned about a crime or a sexual indiscretion. And yet, from the moment I sit in

the “hot seat”, I am acutely aware of the fact that I am struggling to sit still, that my eyes are flicking from side to side, and that my breathing appears to have grown louder and more erratic. I actually feel guilty. If Mike Rumble notices my discomfort, he doesn’t mention it. Rumble looks like a kindly uncle, but there is something about him that implies his former role as a police officer. Maybe it’s the perfection with which he has tied his necktie; or maybe it’s the matter-of-fact way he goes about setting up the equipment. Whatever it is, it is his presence rather than the presence of a laptop and a bunch of cords and cables that has me mirroring,

stuff signalling and manoeuvring in my head. Despite all this, I have seen enough crime drams on TV to know the score. And while I have never knowingly lied as a journalist, I will readily admit that I use language to present facts in the way in which I want them to be read. And while a full-scale polygraph test might last for two hours, mine is only going to last for a quarter of that time. I can keep up a pretence for half an hour, surely? Calm Nonchalance I am here as an invited guest and I am, therefore, given an insight into how the system actually works; an insight that is not normally afforded to the criminals, the unfaithful and the potentially fraudulent that normally occupy this chair. The blood pressure monitor on my arm is self-explanatory. The pair of monitors around my chest and stomach monitor my breathing and can detect even the slightest changes. The twin monitors on my fingers monitor perspiration, while the

motion sensor pad I am sat upon records shifting in my seat and – I fear – buttock clenching. My task is simple. Rumble asks me to think of a number between 1 and 10. He then hands me a pen and a sheet of paper and, while he leaves the room, asks me to write down that number and to place the piece of paper beneath my now twitchy backside. Once the piece of paper containing my “secret” number is safely out of sight, Rumble returns and the test begins. Mike Rumble is quietly spoken. He asks if the number I have selected is the number one. I immediately answer no, as it isn’t. There is then a long, portentous silence as Rumble watches his equipment record my response. “Is your number the number two,” he says. The silence that follows this time is almost menacing, as if he is merely waiting for a blip on his PC screen before clapping on the handcuffs and leading me to the nearest police station.

Rumble doesn’t know this but the number I have selected is the number four. So when he asks if my number is the number three, I can feel what I hope is an imperceptible smile start to play around the edges of my mouth. “No,” I answer again, steeling myself for the next question. “Is your number the number four,” Rumble continues. With all the calm nonchalance I can muster, I respond “no” and wait to see if I have been found out. But no. Rumble presses on from five through to ten, never once giving the slightest hint that he has seen something on his screen to suggest when I might have been lying. There is another long pause after he asks about the number ten before he finally says: “that concludes the test” and begins to untether me from his various monitors. You’ve Been Rumbled We have all seen polygraph tests in the movies; a roll of paper passing beneath a juddering pen that marks peaks and troughs like a seismograph registers earthquake activity. In the movies, there is always a huge and incriminating spike when the accused slips up and the police realise that they’ve got their man (or woman). Those spikes are shown on Mike Rumble’s computer screen but they appear in black, red, blue and green. A pair of black lines displays my breathing as recorded by the bands around my chest and stomach. The red line charts my cardio response; the green indicates Galvic Skin Response (sweating) picked up by the finger sensors. A fine red line at the foot of the screen charts the seat monitor.

stuff As Rumble is explaining this to me, my eye is drawn to the area on the screen represented by the third question: “Is your number the number three”. There is a marked change across all three coloured lines, most notably the green one. To my untrained eye, I have gotten away with it. I have thrown him off the scent with a mixture of guile and journalistic misdirection. When he has finally explained all the indices on the screen, Rumble asks: “Without telling me and purely by looking at this screen, what number do you think is indicated?” “Obviously the number

three,” I respond, now firmly believing that I have outfoxed the former police officer. In my head, I have just taken my first step towards becoming a criminal mastermind. “There’s a big spike across all three measurements.” But there is something in Mike Rumble’s face that suggests he’s not buying it. He motions to another measure on the screen; one he hasn’t mentioned before. “This grey line represents your speed of response in milliseconds,” he explains. “It is consistent throughout the test, apart from here.” He jabs a finger squarely to the part of the display representing the fourth and

20

most important question. “The spikes on the third question suggest to me that this was where you were preparing to tell a lie,” he says. “And the fraction of a millisecond delay in answering question four is where you relaxed, thinking that you were about to get away with it.” Such is his confidence, he doesn’t even wait for me to uncrumple the sheet of paper upon which I was sat to confirm his findings. I’ve – literally - been Rumbled. Get Connected signal in another (and vice versa with an alternative network operator),” says CEO Kevin Aspinall Nessling. “Our MultiNetwork SIM provides a solution to this by bringing connectivity via the strongest signal from three major networks: Three, O2 and Vodafone.”

Rugged mobile phone manufacturer TUFF Phones has begun 2019 with the dual launch of its new TUFF T500 handset and a Multi-Network SIM solution, which the company says delivers the connectivity of three major networks via one SIM card to improve network coverage for itinerant workers. The announcement comes alongside news of deals with several wellknown builders’ merchants that

will see TUFF Phones being merchandised on the counters of over 500 stores across the UK. “Connectivity for transient demolition and construction workers is often an issue as they can frequently find themselves in dead spots without a signal or in situations where a network operator might provide decent signal strength in one area but a relatively weak or non-existent

The T500, the first of TUFF’s third generation of 4G-enabled handsets to be launched, runs on the recent Android 8.1 operating system with a 1.5 GHz QuadCore processor and boasts technical functionality such as face recognition unlock and fingerprint security. A Sony 13MP CMOS camera sensor offers crisp and detailed photos, and a massive 5000 mAh battery means the device will last for days without a charge (up to 580+ hours standby time). The phone is housed in a military grade, fibreglassreinforced, rubberised body with a 5.7-inch Gorilla Glass screen and is IP69 certified waterproof and dustproof. The T500 comes with a two-year warranty and unlimited free screen replacements in the unlikely event of breakage for the lifetime of the warranty. “The pairing of the Multi-Network SIM with our third generation of devices offers a step change in rugged mobile technology and connectivity. Attachments Guidance Issued The National Federation of Demolition Contractors has responded to the rise and rise in the use of specialised hydraulic attachments with a new set of guidance notes. Produced by a working group comprising NFDC chief executive Howard Button, former Institute of Demolition Engineers’ president Dr Terry Quarmby and Brian Carroll of Worsley Plant, the Demolition Attachment Guidance Notes has been produced to promote best practice in the use of a wide range of demolition tools and attachments. The guidance covers shears, pulverisers, universal processors, selector grabs, grapples, breakers, magnets, rippers and both standard and crushing and screening buckets. Reflecting the changing face of the UK demolition industry, the guidance also looks at the use of quick couplers as a means to mount a variety of attachments. In addition to providing an insight into the various attachment types and their potential uses, the

guidance also highlights the issue of oil pressure injuries and the need for training for anyone using or working in close proximity to the attachment in question. Of course, much of the guidance contained within this new publication exists elsewhere wither in the form of legislation - the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) or the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) or within the operator’s manuals and maintenance schedules provided by the attachment manufacturers. By bringing all those disparate sets of information into a single 36page guidance, there can be no question that the Demolition Attachment Guidance Notes adds to the sum of industry knowledge.

White Honoured Julie White, managing director of specialist concrete drilling, sawing and controlled demolition company D-Drill, received a Lifetime Achievement award at The Builders’ Conference Live Awards towards the end of 2018. White, a former UK Businesswoman of the Year, was handed the award by broadcaster and host Mike Shaft during a ceremony at The Savoy in London. “This award goes to someone who works tirelessly to improve the image of the construction sector and who is a shining example of how sharing best practice and knowledge can benefit everyone,” Shaft said. “With an absolute passion for what the sector should be doing to encourage more young people to consider construction as a career, she is committed to delivering the very highest standards of health and safety though a skilled workforce. Recognised for being an innovator and pushing for efficiency through technology her enthusiasm to drive positive change is evidenced by her company’s successful training and apprenticeship scheme.” Julie White completed a management buy-out of D-Drill from her father a decade ago and has gone on to become a leading figure in the industry. Under her watch, the company has added further divisions in 2D/3D concrete scanning, floor preparation, fire protection as

well as inventing a new D-Kerb machine that can cut kerbs to 45 degrees in situ. In 2018, Julie was selected to sit on the Construction Industry Training Board’s (CITB) England Council having shown a huge commitment to training and apprenticeships, spending five times the industry average on training and, currently, 45 per cent of the D-Drill workforce are either undergoing or have completed an apprenticeship with the company. She is a previous chair of the National Specialist Contractors’ Council’s (NSCC) Training Committee and was part of the group that formed BuildUK and sits as a Director on the Main Strategy BuildUK board. She is also chair of the BuildUK CITB Steering Group.

28

“This came as a complete surprise and I am delighted and humbled to have been honoured in this way. Since taking over D-Drill ten years ago, I have focused on diversifying the business but also in ensuring that we contribute to the industry as a whole in the UK and globally. I have been keen to speak up on serious issues in our industry but also to really sell what we do in the hope that the next generation see what a fantastic career choice this is,” White concludes. “I’ve enjoyed being able to shout about the construction industry in the national media because I believe we work in an amazing field that needs to be recognised and celebrated. Despite this being a lifetime achievement award, there’s still plenty of life in me and I’ve got no plans to retire just yet.”

When Two Worlds Collide The first 20 candidates on the Institute of Demolition Engineers’ Foundation Degree Course in Demolition Management are now four modules into a 12-module programme designed to produce the industry leaders of the future. Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony reports.

I am not one of those that subscribes to the notion that everyone in the demolition industry is an uneducated, knuckledragging Neanderthal. Indeed, while they might not have diplomas and certificates on their office walls, some of the smartest and sharpest people I have ever met work within this industry. That being said, I have long held the belief that demolition and academia are two entirely separate worlds that exist in parallel but which seldom - if ever - meet. But there are 20 individuals – 21 if you count course creator, lecturer and “Demolition Doctor” Terry Quarmby – that are currently dispelling that myth as they work their way through a two-year course from which they will hopefully emerge with a degree in demolition management. These students – 19 men and, pleasingly, one woman – are a true reflection of the demolition industry of today and, more importantly, a glimpse of a better-educated and scholarly industry of tomorrow. Modular Approach The two-year course is

30

divided into 12 modules with six modules being undertaken each year. The first module is an introduction to the UK demolition sector including codes of practice and guidance that dictate how demolition contracts are delivered. This module also explores the various types of research required to complete external course work and the production of technical papers to the required standard. “People’s understanding of data collection and research is usually wide of the mark. It is a structured process that takes a lot of learning to be able to compile and present research as a proper academic technical paper,” Quarmby asserts. “By the time they are twothirds of the way through this course, it is expected that our students will be able to produce true academic technical papers that would withstand scrutiny by anyone.” Module two focuses upon occupational health and safety and the current CDM Regulations and how these relate

stuff to demolition practitioners, employers and enforcing authorities. Module three deals with asbestos in the built environment while module four covers asbestos management. The fifth module covers demolition and the environment and includes the production of a detailed environmental management plan based upon a fictitious seven storey residential block at the centre of a housing estate. Module six covers demolition methodology including plant and equipment, a sphere that is covered in greater detail in

module seven. Module eight, meanwhile, is dedicated to oxypropane cutting equipment. Reflecting the importance of a sound engineering understanding, modules nine and ten are dedicated to structural appreciation including calculations such as load path and transfer together with structural materials, movement and jointing. Module 11 looks at the fundamentals of commercial management while the course concludes, appropriately, with standards and ethics.

Depth of Knowledge I remember the first time I felt truly out of my depth. I played football (that’s soccer to our US readers) to a fairly good standard. Between the ages of 15 and 16, I played for my county and – as a result – I was invited to a trial for a semi-professional local team. Unfortunately, on the day of my trial, I was playing with a kid who made me look as though I had only recently learned to kick a ball. He was faster, stronger and way more skilful than me. And to make matters worse, he was just 13 (he would actually go on to play professionally for both Wimbledon and Hull, but that’s a story for another time). I got the same feeling sitting in on the first day of module four – Asbestos for Management – at Armac Group’s fantastic new head office. Although I have never done any actual demolition, I like to believe that I have a basic understanding: certainly enough to get by; and generally enough to avoid looking stupid. But the depth of knowledge in that room made me realise just how little I know and how much a modern demolition man or woman is expected to know. “What other industry – from director to site operative – has to have the breadth and depth of knowledge expected in the demolition sector?” says Quarmby. “We are expected to have a detailed grasp of our own working practices, health and safety, the environment and ecology, recycling, reclamation and the resale of products, waste management and minimisation, hazardous waste and asbestos. The list goes on and on.”

stuff Despite this, each of the students could quote not just regulations but clauses and sub-clauses of the regulations. They knew – without the aid of Google – the minimum hourly requirement for clean air changes in a decontamination unit. In fact, to the best of my recollection, the class did not once fail to answer a question raised by lecturer Quarmby. Past & Future I have known Terry Quarmby for more years than either of us care to count. He made muchneeded and sweeping changes when he was president of the Institute of Demolition Engineers, setting the Institute on an educational path that – with occasional detours and pit-stops - continues to this day. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of

the demolition industry in all its many and varied guises, as evidenced by the fact that he is – to the best of our knowledge – the only holder of a Demolition Doctorate in the entire world. But having knowledge and having the skill to impart that knowledge are two very different things. And yet, to the untrained eye, Quarmby has slipped into the role of lecturer with consummate ease. Indeed, although he turns 70 years old later this year, he seems reinvigorated when sharing his knowledge. Leaving practiced gaps at the ends of sentences to be filled in by his willing students, he is every inch the lecturer, although the fading tattoos on his forearms serve as a reminder that Quarmby is – at heart – an old school demolition man.

34

And therein lies the irony. Terry Quarmby spent decades in the demolition business before discovering his passion for learning and academia in his 50s. Through his creation and delivery of the Institute of Demolition Engineers’ Foundation Degree Course in Demolition Management, he is using knowledge amassed in the past to mould the demolition leaders and academics of the future.

RVA Strengthens Squad Decommissioning consultancy RVA Group has strengthened its management board with two employee promotions and the appointment of four additional members of staff. Matthew Waller has taken on the role of operations director, following 10 years with the company. Having joined as project manager but more recently responsible for group EHS (environmental, health and safety) excellence – as well as the delivery of engineering projects worldwide – he will now oversee the entire front end of the business.

Commenting on the organisational restructure, founder and managing director Richard Vann explained: “In November 2017, RVA was acquired by Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), via its wholly owned subsidiary EP UK Investments Ltd. The news came in the month that we celebrated 25 years in business, and it marked the latest chapter in preparing a company fit for the future. This next generation of leadership has injected an added level of dynamism into the organisation. Matthew and Mark are experienced, technically astute and likeable team members, who are extremely embracing of change – all are important qualities as we head into our next quarter of a century.” The promotions coincide with the appointment of three other highly-qualified engineering professionals.

Also appointed to the board is Mark Taylor as engineering consultancy director – an extensively qualified civil engineer responsible for the management and quality control of RVA’s global consultancy projects. He joined RVA as a project manager back in 2006. With their continuing roles on the senior leadership team, Waller and Taylor will also contribute to the strategic direction of the company, as RVA prepares for its next phase of growth.

36

Adam O’Neill is a commercially aware project manager who has spent his career working in the power generation, nuclear, construction and building services. He is joined by fellow project managers Carl Fawkes, with a background in subsea engineering and decommissioning; and Chris Donnelly who has eight years’ demolition project management experience. “We invest continuously in the development of our people, because such ongoing learning is crucial in our inherently high-hazard world. But the welcoming of ‘new blood’ – to complement our existing talent – is also important,” Vann concludes. “It means we’re now well equipped to tackle even more UK and international projects in 2019 and beyond.”

Sustainability Bites For most UK demolition folks, potatoes and mushrooms are an integral part of a traditional Full English breakfast. But according to a new report from Volvo Construction Equipment, the construction industry’s drive for greater sustainability could mean both could appear in industry waste streams as well as on industry plates. As the global construction industry seeks ever-greater levels of sustainability, an increasingly broad and increasingly unlikely range of building materials are being mooted as potential solutions. Cross-Laminated Timber Wood has been a construction material for thousands of years and it could be making a big comeback. The strength of the wood fibre actually comes from the very thing we’re trying to reduce in the atmosphere and that’s carbon, finding sustainable ways to reduce and store atmospheric carbon in one of the major future challenges. Cross-laminated timber could be the answer. Consisting of small pieces of softwood laminated together, it is glued under tremendous pressure in opposing directions to give it superhuman strength – wood affected by drought or insects can still be included in these panels without compromising structure integrity. This engineering process also allows panels to be made to measure, creating flat packed structures that can be constructed much faster than conventional

38

stuff material. With a lower embodied carbon footprint, its potential for off-site construction also makes it a sustainable product. Some projects could even be completed six times faster than a standard building project. According to the Economist, the strength of this layered wood makes it a suitable substitute for concrete and steel and could even be the preferred material for our cities’ skyscrapers. In fact, Portland in the USA has only recently become the home of America’s tallest mass timber structure. Memory Steel - With $350 trillion to be invested solely in urban infrastructure globally by 2050, according to WWF, making use of more sustainable building materials will go a long way to help make this infrastructure as clean as possible. Memory steel is a clever material that can be used to reinforce new and existing concrete structures and could be a game-changer for infrastructure. Consisting of shape memory alloys based on iron that contracts during heating, it permanently prestresses the concrete structure as it heats, which means it needs to be pre-stressed just once. Other more conventional methods require the steel reinforcements in concrete structures to be pre-stressed under hydraulic tension to improve the strength and performance of the final concrete structure – requiring not only a lot of time but also a lot of equipment and space, all of which have an impact on productivity and sustainability. Because the strengthening of existing bridges, roads and highways often provides its own limitations on space, memory steel could revolutionize not

just the way we build new infrastructure but also the way we renovate older structures. Potato Chipboard - The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that one third of the food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally – that’s a staggering 1.3 billion tons a year. We need to work to reduce this in the longrun, but in the meantime, there are some ingenious solutions to turn waste into material. One such solution is a UK-based concept to create chipboard building material from potatoes. Chip[s] Board® is a revolutionary concept that creates a product made entirely from discarded restaurant potatoes scraps. Inspired by the circular economy that we see in nature, effectively where resources and waste are used again in a long-lasting environmental loop, the concept allows for needless food waste to be regenerated as a sustainable building material.

ways to harness the incredible potential of mushrooms for use as building insulation. The insulation is made from the vegetative part of mushrooms, known as mycelium. The process of mycelium bio fabrication works by letting the fungus from a mushroom feed on a substrate, such as sawdust. The fungus will then grow to the shape of the mould it is placed in and its growth is only halted when the fungus is dried. The final dried product can then be sanded and painted to suit its intended use. Not only is this material completely natural and biodegradable, but it massively reduces a building’s embodied and operational carbon footprint. Because the material is naturally self-extinguishing and air purifying at the same time, it actually removes carbon from the atmosphere and becomes even stronger in the process. This innovative material could be used in the construction of anything from airports to houses.

Mushroom Insulation - But chips aren’t the only thing on the menu. Researchers from around the world have found

Zero-Carbon Cement - Cement accounts for percent of global carbon emissions – yet is still one of the most widely used

stuff construction materials. It’s mainly comprised of limestone, calcium, silicon, iron and aluminium and is the binding factor in concrete, but the recipe for the future is adapting to our need for sustainable alternatives. DB Group, for example, has created zero-cement concrete Cemfree that can save up to 88 percent in embodied CO2 compared to a conventional mix – all without compromising strength. And then there’s Concrete Canvas, a flexible, concrete impregnated fabric that hardens when exposed to water to form a thin, durable, water proof and fire-resistant concrete layer. The material comes in batched rolls and can be speedily laid up to 10 times faster than conventional concrete. And not only does it cut down on construction time and cost, it is also a low mass, low carbon technology that uses up to 95%

less material than traditional methods. Both of these novel materials are already being used in the building of infrastructure around the world. Anglia Water in the UK became the first water company to use Cemfree in 2017 and Concrete Canvas has been used to create storm drains and build emergency infrastructure following natural disasters. Air-Purifying Facades Some materials might seem out of this world, but this one is actually created with the help of aeronautic scientists. Developed by NASA offshoot PURETi, and in partnership with Neolith, a new building façade material has been created which literally cleans the air around it. By removing free radicals and other pollutants that come into contact with its photocatalytic surface, it has the benefit of reversing pollution

42

and improving air quality at the same time as keeping surfaces clean. In laboratory tests this material has been shown to reduce potentially harmful nitrogen oxide levels by up to 70 to 80 percent. According to its creators, just 4.0 m2 of this material has the capacity to reduce the same amount of nitrogen oxide pollutants produced by a car over a whole year. Even though they exist today, the widespread deployment of these materials is likely to be a long way off; and quite what that utilisation might mean for the demolition industry and its ability to reclaim and recycle remains to be seen. But there remains the very real possibility that certain elements of the Full English breakfast might one day need processing by means other than a knife and fork.

the 1950s and 1980s. Despite being banned as a building material in 1999, asbestos causes around 5,000 deaths in the UK every year, giving us one of the highest rates of mesothelioma globally.

A lack of knowledge about the material is putting workers and users of these buildings at risk of fatal lung cancers UKATA has warned.

Asbestos is considered safe if not disturbed. However, the lack of awareness of the dangers by users of buildings has turned it into one of the biggest threats to human health in recent years.

Properties built or refurbished before the year 2000 may contain asbestos, particularly those built in the UK between

stuff disease or fatal mesothelioma cancer of the lung linings. More than 90 percent of NHS Trusts say that asbestos exists in their buildings and since 2001 more than 200 teachers have died across the country from asbestos related cancer. Children who are exposed to asbestos are five times more likely to contract mesothelioma than adults aged 30. Around half of people diagnosed with mesothelioma will be alive after a year, and only 1 in 10 after five years. Kent County Council was recently fined £200,000 after asbestos was disturbed in a primary school in Sittingbourne.

Craig Evans, UKATA Chief Operating Officer, explained: “Financially it is not always an option or necessary to remove asbestos from buildings which contain it. However, people need to be aware of the presence of it and more importantly how to manage it. “School caretakers are a particular group at risk due to the nature of their work which involves undertaking minor repairs of school buildings. If asbestos is disturbed during such work, there is a risk that asbestos fibres will be released and create risk to others in the school. Asbestos awareness is critical and why we are calling on all employees within the public sector to receive asbestos awareness training.”

46

Described as a ‘ticking timebomb’, the time between initial asbestos exposure and when a doctor accurately diagnoses an asbestos-related disease is anywhere from 15 - 60 years, known as the latency period. “As the effects of asbestos remain dormant for a number of years, people are unaware of the risk they have exposed themselves to until the symptoms present themselves and it is often too late. Being asbestos aware shouldn’t just be confined to the facility manager,” Evans concludes. “Half day asbestos awareness courses, which are available from UKATA member companies throughout the UK are inexpensive and will save lives.”

ON SITE Maxam was charged with the design and execution of the blasting to demolish the concrete towers at a thermal power station in Spain. It proved to be one of the most complex tasks the company has undertaken. Demolition magazine reports.complex tasks the company has undertaken. Demolition magazine reports. The Elcogas plant in Puertollano was a power plant utilising integrated gasification combined cycle technology. The facility ceased activity in 2016, and Recifemetal Espana SL was charged with the dismantling project. The demolition of the power plant’s concrete cooling and gasification towers was one of the most complex aspects of the dismantling process, and Recifemetal Espana elected to demolish them by means of a controlled blasting. The design and execution of that blast was awarded to Maxam which has carried out more than 100 demolitions of this type. The 122 metre tall cooling tower was made up of a reinforced concrete slab with a thickness between 17.5 and 19 cm. The slab base progressively widened starting at 19 cm and reaching a maximum of 90 cm at the last 9.80 metres of the slab’s bottom. The slab was supported by 56 inclined cylindrical pillars of 80 cm diameter, and 8.28 metres in height. The gasification tower was a rectangular prism with 22.40 x 10.20 metre sides. It was

49

ON SITE 81.2 metres tall at its highest point. The walls were made of reinforced concrete with a thickness of 40 cm. Inside the tower there were several walls containing the staircases and lift. According to Maxam’s plans, the cooling tower was supposed to implode keeping the rubble approximately within the same area originally occupied by the tower. The gasification tower was designed to fall in a northwesterly direction, using its long side (22.40 metres) as a hinge line. The main concern of the three companies involved in the project was the safety working crew, as well as of any person who wished to watch the demolition. Another priority was to mitigate the four main environmental effects caused by the demolition’s blast: the possible generation of vibrations, air overpressure, flyrock and dust. Several structures located in the towers’ surroundings required protection during the blast.

Tailor-Made Solution Before initiating boreholes drilling in both towers, structural engineering studies were conducted on both to certify stability during drilling and other required preparatory work before the shot. A total of 466 individual loads of Riodin explosives were used in the cooling tower and 426 in the gasification tower. These loads were confined in blasting boreholes stemmed with polyurethane foam to reduce the airblast. The explosive charges were initiated using Riotronic DT electronic detonators to ensure a correct and precise initiation. A total amount of 275 kg of Riodin explosive and over 1,000 Riotronic electronic detonators were employed in the demolition

50

of both towers. The timing of the blast lasted 285 ms in the cooling tower and 3,000 ms in the gasification tower. After several coordination meetings with companies in the area, neighbours and local and provincial authorities, a safety and communications plan was prepared. This plan explained in detail the safety and evacuation procedure to follow during the blasts. A safety perimeter was designed with a

ON SITE radius greater than 1.0 km. This could only be accessed by the explosives engineers who would be in charge of firing the shot from a safe position provided with emergency escape routes. The evacuation perimeter was properly secured by the relevant authorities. To minimise and monitor the environmental impacts, four seismographs were installed: one in the electrical substation, two in the solar power plant and one in the closest house. These were deployed to ensure that vibration levels did not exceed the limits established by Standard UNE 22381-93. To avoid flyrock, a layer of singletwist wire mesh and another layer of geotextile mesh with a density of 500 g/m2 was installed around each explosive charge. Lastly, dust collectors and hydrants were installed to trap the dust. In addition, a study of the area’s prevailing winds was conducted in order to establish the best time for blasting. Challenge Accomplished The cooling tower fell vertically, and the resulting debris remained in the planned area, concentrated inside the pit and near the tower’s base. After eliminating the pillars, the structure fell about 9.0 metres vertically. The top, already weakened in its thicker parts due

to the explosive placed in the boreholes, impacted against the floor, generating large transverse and longitudinal cracks in the thinner areas of the slab. These cracks instantly caused the structure to collapse entirely. The gasification tower fell in the planned direction thanks to the breaking wedge generated by the explosive. By reducing its maximum height to 10 metres above floor level, the tower became more accessible and safer to be demolished using mechanical means. Seismographs records reflected lower vibration values than those established in Standard UNE 22381-93.

From the gasification tower, flyrock flew to a distance of approximately 100 metres, well within the 1,000 metre exclusion one. The only infrastructure that was hit by the flyrock was the CR504 road when the cooling tower was shot. The road was blocked to traffic and was quickly cleaned after the blast. The adopted dust control measures were successful, as the dust that was not contained by the hydrants and collectors travelled northeast towards the neighbouring hills and road. The electrical substation and the thermal power station’s solar panels were not affected at all, as subsequently confirmed by their respective owners.

KIT TALK REWRITING

THE RULES

Caterpillar has hosted a ma jor international press event to announce the launch of a number of important new products. Demolition magazine’s Mark Anthony flew to Malaga in Spain to check out how Cat is planning to Rewrite the Rules.

58

KIT TALK

Don’t Call it a Comeback! With a broad range of excavators and work tools, Caterpillar is a mainstay of the demolition equipment world. But with the launch of a new dedicated demolition excavator, the company is demonstrating a renewed focus, and that can only be good for the global demolition industry. Demolition magazine’s Mark Anthony reports exclusively from Caterpillar’s Demonstration and Learning Centre in Malaga, Spain. Demolition, perhaps more than any other sub-sector of the construction equipment world, demands a huge level of commitment from the companies that supply its equipment. Those manufacturers and dealers that have achieved the greatest level of success are those that have demonstrated a long-lasting and ongoing dedication and input to the demolition sector.

AR Demolition, Armac, DSM and Lawson Group – all of which run Caterpillar equipment in one form or another – continued to buy excavators from the global giant.

So when Caterpillar’s high reach excavator development programme with Demlone ran aground, it felt – at times - that one of the demolition industry mainstays had taken a step back from the sector. That wasn’t true, of course. The company remains the only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to offer a full line of demolition work tools. Besides, the likes of

Yet the announcement of a new dedicated demolition excavator – the 340 SB (Straight Boom) feels like a return to form; a refocusing; a homecoming for one of the industry’s prodigal sons. And even though it will not be available until the middle of the year, there is a palpable sense of anticipation surrounding this impressivesounding machine, not least from the Caterpillar team charged with bringing it to market. Tool Carrier Caterpillar’s Rogier Tonies, market development manager of the company’s excavation division, is at pains to stress that the new 40 tonne class Cat 340 SB is a dedicated demolition machine, and not

KIT TALK an earthmoving machine with a few demolition-focused bells and whistles bolted on as an afterthought. Indeed, Tonies and his team are under no illusions about the 340 SB’s role in the demolition process; that its primary function is to serve as a versatile tool carrier. So while the marketing blurb says the machine has been designed “from the ground up”, the truth is that it has been designed from the attachment back. A tool control system allows the operator to pre-programme up to 20 different attachments and the machine is delivered with high pressure and medium pressure hydraulic lines that will accommodate a wide variety of work tools from shears and multi-processors to grabs, grapples and hydraulic breakers.

hashtag that was ever-present during the international press launch in Malaga, Spain, the new Cat 340 SB will be offered with a full suite of systems to allow owners and operators to monitor the location

It is carried on a “next generation” excavator platform purpose-built for demolition applications. It has heavy duty undercarriage, swing frame and counterweight to provide optimum machine protection whilst affording a stable operating base. It features a 9.6 metre straight boom that allows the machine to operate at heights of approximately 13 metres and demolish structures of between three and four storeys in height. The unit comes with a demolition specification cab as standard complete with armoured glass and FOGS cab protection for maximum operator safety. The Cat Product Link telematics system collects data from machine assets—any type, any brand—data including, for example, asset location, engine on/off, work hours, fuel burn, and diagnostic-code alerts. New is the introduction of PL161 to track operating hours and location of work tools (more details in our coverage of the latest Caterpillar work tools). This information is available to the owner via a secure website, Cat VisionLink, which conforms to ISO standards. In addition, machines can be linked and monitored by the new Cat App is designed to

allow users remote access to telematics data—tracking machine hours, location, receiving diagnostic codes, and managing maintenance directly from their mobile phone without turning on their computer. With the operator ID feature, individual performance can be tracked and training opportunities identified. Furthermore, users can use their mobile phone as the digital key for starting select Next Generation Cat machines. Users can also find value in viewing telematics data and additional equipment management resources on the companion website: https:// my.cat.com. Also new is a suite

of Cat Connect technologies that provides remote equipment diagnostics and software updates. Cat Remote Services includes two key offerings— Remote Troubleshoot (allows dealers to run diagnostic testing and pinpoint potential issues) and Remote Flash (allows dealers to remotely load current versions of on-board software). First of Many The new Cat 340 SB is a direct replacement for the previous 336 SB model but that is merely the tip of the demolition iceberg. Caterpillar engineers are already hard at work applying the “next generation” upgrades to the 340 UHD ultra high reach excavator,

KIT TALK although that machine is currently destined for a 2020 introduction. Plans are also afoot for a 352 model complete with an ultra high reach option as Caterpillar makes sweeping changes across its excavator range and beyond. Does the 340 SB “rewrite the rules of the jobsite” as the Caterpillar mantra promises? Only time will tell. But one thing is clear. In demolition terms, Caterpillar is very much BACK…even though it has never really been away. Check out this exclusive video interview: https://youtu.be/ iGvrNiDQOYY

Demolition magazine says… The fact that Caterpillar has chosen to refocus upon the demolition sector is good news even for those contractors that do not own or operate Caterpillar equipment. The power, influence and innovation that Caterpillar can bring to bear on the global demolition industry should not be underestimated. The company draws upon decades of demolition experience. It possesses research and development resources that are

63

unparalleled in the construction and demolition field. It has a global dealer network that can not only support customers with parts and aftersales service but which also gathers customer feedback that can be used to enhance and improve the company’s product offering. And all of this forces its big name competitors – Liebherr, Hitachi, Komatsu etc – to similarly push the envelope. In short, the demolition industry needs Caterpillar almost as much as Caterpillar needs the demolition industry.

KIT TALK

Tooled Up Demolition work tools and attachments were a key element of Caterpillar’s international press launch in Malaga, Spain. And there was way more to the presentations than mere “dumb iron”. Mark Anthony reports. Mention the name Caterpillar to most people in this industry and their thoughts will likely turn to machines like the incomparable D11 dozer or to its excavators and wheel loaders. But ever since Caterpillar acquired Verachtert just over 20 years ago, the company has been quietly and strategically staking a claim in the attachments and work tools arena. During that time, Caterpillar has amassed a comprehensive product range to rival that of even dedicated attachment manufacturers. At the Bauma 2019 exhibition in April, that product range will expand still further. And while the new work tools sport the familiar black livery of Caterpillar attachments, the company is keen to proclaim that the new work tools – and even the new tracking capabilities offered to support them – are equally well suited to mounting on non-Cat carriers. Shear Delight First up is three new scrapshear models: the S3015; S3025; and S3035. Designed for hydraulic excavators with operating weights between 8 and 40 tonnes, these new Cat shears feature optimum force-to-weight ratios that yield faster cycle times and more

cuts per hour, compared with predecessor models. These robust new shears feature a dual-offset apex-jaw design, resulting in increased cutting performance and efficiency. The new patentpending bolt-on piercing tip on the upper jaw further enhances productivity when piercing is required and protects the moving jaw and shielding parent metal from wear as the moving jaw travels through the lower jaw. Structural reinforcements more effectively distribute the shear’s cutting forces, and the apex-jaw design, coupled with a larger jaw opening, results in greater cutting strength, especially when cutting profiles. The powerful reverse cylinder is fully protected and allows a slim profile that improves visibility and manoeuvrability in tight spaces. The knives and guide blades have four cutting surfaces that can be rotated before replacement is necessary. A heavy-duty pivot group can be tightened with standard tooling to keep the jaws aligned as wear occurs. The new Cat shears are maintenance friendly and feature field-serviceable swivel and pivot group, which will

64

reduce downtime. The operator can adjust the side play in the field without the need for special tooling by only tightening the pin. Further, greasing the shear, including stick cylinder and boom pin, can be done from ground level, making this work safer. The S2000/S3000 Series are manufactured from alloy steel having superior yield and tensile strength properties. These qualities contribute to longer overall life. Knife maintenance, wear-plate replacement, and tip build-up can be addressed quickly and easily. Part of the Process The company also unveiled three new multi-processor models—MP332, MP345 and, MP365—which build on the company’s demolitiontechnology experience and which join the MP318 and MP324 in the Cat multiprocessor range. The design of the new multiprocessors allows pairing a basic housing with any of up to six jaw sets, increasing jobsite versatility; the design also boosts productivity with patentpending features, such as a new jaw locking system and the Speed Booster valve. The net

KIT TALK result is optimum performance, coupled with low owning and operating costs. The new MP300 Series models are compact and designed with a high power to weight ratio, delivering exceptionally strong cutting and crushing power, while reducing stress on the carrier. Also, the housings used for the new tools incorporate a heavy-duty rotator that provides 360-degree movement for positioning the multi-processor at an optimum angle for any demolition situation. In operation, when the jaws meet resistance, the integral hydraulic booster valve automatically activates. The Speed-Booster system combines a “speed” and

“booster” valve and can therefore use a smaller cylinder diameter (compared with previous models), which nearly halves cycle time for jaw opening and closing. In addition, depending on the jaw set used, closing force is up to 19 percent higher, compared with previous-series models. The configurations of the interchangeable jaw sets include: Concrete Cutter (CC); Demolition (D); Pulveriser (P); Shear (S); Universal (U); and Tank Shear (TS). The jaw sets are designed to be exchanged in as few as 10 minutes using only basic tools. Larger models feature a pin capture system that retains the cylinder pin with the jaw to further enable fast, safe jaw exchanges.

66

Hammering Home A good many dedicated hydraulic breaker manufacturers have been forced into an “if you can’t beat them, join them” situation by the increasing presence on the market of lower cost breakers, primarily from the Far East. Although each manufacturer has gone about this in a slightly different way, many now offer multiple lines starting at the top with a premium line that is backed by a value line that is stripped of many of the bells and whistles found on the more expensive premium line. Caterpillar is no stranger to such an approach. For as long as I can recall, the company has produced both high and lowertech derivatives of many of its

KIT TALK machines including excavators and dozers to meet the needs of different market sectors and – more often – different geographic regions. So it comes as no surprise that the company has followed suit with the introduction of a three model GC Series of silenced hydraulic breakers that are suitable for carriers in the 13 to 30 tonne operating weight range. Interestingly, however, while the GC Series features a gas accumulator-style design and lacks some of the finesse of the company’s premium line, Caterpillar firmly believes that the GC models are ideally suited to a demolition environment where they might be used slightly less frequently and where maximum power is not always required. Tracking & Monitoring In addition to being expert in demolition process, health and safety, recycling and waste management, the modern demolition contractor is also expected to be an expert in inventory control. With the advent of advanced

automatic quick couplers, today’s demolition contractor might have upwards of five attachments for each excavator in their fleet. And those valuable and expensive attachments need to be tracked every bit as much as the excavators upon which they are mounted. But Caterpillar has a solution. The company used the international press trip to Malaga to announce the addition of the PL161 attachment locator to its Product Link hardware product line to ensure that attachment and work tool owners know precisely where there are across multiple sites, reduce the number of lost attachments, and plan for maintenance and replacement. The PL161 attachment locator can be used on attachments and non-powered assets as an affordable option for last known location tracking, and it integrates easily into your operation for full fleet management of machines and attachments from one dashboard on your smartphone or tablet.

The PL161 locator is a customer installable device that supports operation in harsh environments. The compact design of the locator makes it compatible for a wide range of assets without interfering with the work they are doing. Bluetooth range is up to 30 metres, depending on the environment and any obstructions. The device is battery powered with an estimated life of 2 years. The PL161 locator is designed to be used with the Cat App and with other PL Series scanning devices installed on Next Generation Excavators or retrofit kits available for older machines. When using the Cat App within range of the PL161 locator device, the location will be logged automatically. This system leverages cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity through the user’s own smartphone or tablet to transmit data to the VisionLink® and My.Cat.com applications. Purchase of the PL161 locator comes with a subscription to VisionLink for the life of the device. PL161 locator is available from the factory on select attachments but will be factoryinstalled on all excavator attachments starting from the middle of 2019. The Cat App is compatible with most smart devices that have Bluetooth 4.0 or later and is available for download from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Machine Management Goes Mobile Caterpillar is pushing the innovation envelope with the introduction of the Cat App, an advanced and intuitive system that allows customers to monitor their machine fleet from the plam of their hands. For most of us today, our mobile phones and devices are a primary source of news. If you want to check the latest football scores, most of us will reach for our smartphones. Want to watch a YouTube video? The device in your pocket will precisely that, pretty much regardless of where you are.

And so the idea of placing demolition equipment fleet management in the palm of your hand is at once forwardthinking, innovative and inevitable. It will surprise no-one that one of the forst to embrace that degree of technology is Caterpillar. Indeed, during the international

press conference in Malaga, it was clear that such technology was not just a fad or innovation for the sake of innovation. Instead, this technology is baked into just about every product now rolling off the Caterpillar production line. Indeed, with the addition of some simple retrofit devices, such innovation can even be applied to existing and older products. Simplified & Streamlined At the very heart of this development is the new Cat App, a mobile app designed to allow customers who spend their time in a truck, at the job site and on-the-go to take advantage of equipment telematics data. The new Cat App delivers simplified, streamlined data directly to mobile devices, helping customers monitor machine location and health, react faster to fault codes and maximise uptime. This new mobile equipment management tool gives customers an easy way to monitor their entire fleet, request parts and service, and connect with their Cat dealer from the work site. The exact location of all equipment tracked by the app is displayed on the mobile device, along with the machine’s operating hours, health and utilisation data. It

70

KIT TALK enables operations to get the most from their equipment by moving an under-utilised asset to precisely where it is needed most. Customisable push notifications alert Cat App users of machine operating condition, even if they don’t check into the app every day. Upcoming planned service indicators, based on machine operating hours, are sent to the user, so service can be scheduled for when it doesn’t impact production. Fault codes, such as engine alerts, provide warnings of critical service issues that need to be addressed before a downtime event occurs. The flexible app allows users to establish

different thresholds for when an event notification is sent. Getting Started Designed for machine owners worldwide, Cat App users can choose from 35 different languages. It is available on both iOS and Android operating systems and can be downloaded from Apple iTunes or Google Play store. Once downloaded, the user can log in by using existing credentials to load previously stored Cat machine data. New users can sign up and enter equipment data into the app by clicking “Get Started.” Data can also be viewed and uploaded easily on the companion site, https://my.cat.com, by logging in and supplying asset information.

Volvo Unveils New Compact Excavators Volvo Construction Equipment’s new E-Series compact excavators are designed to tackle tough jobs in tight corners, while delivering everyday low operating costs.

The new EC15E, EC18E and EC20E mini excavators from Volvo Construction Equipment are small but tough models that replace the previous D Series of excavators, while the short-swing ECR18E is a new addition to Volvo CE’s compact range. The E-Series models have a common

74

platform that is built with durability in mind. All round steel panels are safely recessed 10mm behind the Volvo exclusive highprofile cast iron counterweight, which ably provides protection and digging stability. With a machine height of a little over two metres and a variable undercarriage that can shrink to less than one metre – these new models can gain access to even the most confined of work areas. Once in position, the undercarriage can expand up to 1.35 metres for additional stability. The design ensures that the right frame corner, swing post and cylinder all stay within the tracks, resulting in maximum visibility and a reduced risk of machine damage when working alongside obstacles. It may be able to squeeze into tight spaces, but operators will find that the cab environment of these compact excavators is both roomy and uncluttered. With fingertip operation, a simple layout to the controls and large pedals, each new model is easy to operate – and offers smooth combined movements. As with all Volvo machines, safety lies at the heart of the E-Series compact excavator range. A large entrance area and well positioned step and handrails help with entry and egress of the cab, and once in position the operator is secure, thanks to good visibility and a ROPS/TOPS/OPG1 cab and canopy as standard. Other security features include lockable controls that prevent movement if the operator is not sitting firmly on the seat, bright orange seatbelt and green flashing beacon that help site managers easily confirm that the seatbelt is being used by operators at all times. Compact machines move around far more frequently than larger general-purpose machines, but Volvo has designed the E-Series to be fast, simple and safe to transport. These mini marvels feature automatic slew lock and four easily accessed tie-down points on the upper frame. Thanks to their light weight and the Volvo bucket transportation system, the machines can also be safely transported with up to three buckets and a hydraulic breaker on a compact truck or trailer.

KIT TALK The EC15E compact excavator builds on the success of its predecessor, which was a proven and popular machine, particularly in the rental sector. Not only is it lightweight, it is also the smallest in the Volvo range, allowing it to squeeze into the tightest of spaces. While at work the EC15E comes into its own, and like its big sisters, provides the easeof-use and durability needed to work hard all day, every day. Easy maintenance and repair minimize downtime, helping to deliver a low total cost of ownership. The EC18E and EC20E take performance to a new level, with a 13 per cent increase in tractive force and respectively 2,130 kg and 3,120 kg of combined digging forces. Their lifting capacity has increased by an average of 22 per cent at the front compared to the D-Series they replace, plus an extra seven percent at the side on the EC20E. The 11 per cent longer undercarriage of the EC18E contributes to even better all-round lifting capacity and stability, compared to the previous generation, with a 140 mm increase in digging depth. For further flexibility, the auxiliary hydraulic flows can be independently adjusted in each direction, ensuring optimal speed and control,

and a second auxiliary line is also available as an option. The ECR18E is an entirely new model and features a short-swing design. Able to fit into the tightest of spaces, the ultra-short tail design gives it the smallest radius in the Volvo range. Ideal for working on congested jobsites, the new ECR18E complements the Volvo compact excavators offering, which so far comprises seven short swing radius models, ranging from 1.7 to 9.5 tonnes. The E-Series can be effortlessly maintained thanks to a hinged fuel tank unique to Volvo that offers up an impressive ease of access to the engine compartment, and easy-tolocate daily check points. A 50hour greasing interval further contributes towards the bestin-class serviceability of these machines. The engine can also be fitted with auto idle and automatic engine shutdown features, which help reduce noise disturbance, service costs and fuel consumption – as well as ultimately ensuring a higher resale value. As with all Volvo models, the E-Series can be complemented with a range of attachments such as quick couplers, buckets, breakers, and Genuine Volvo Parts.

DUST SUPPRESSION

Dust-Up Ahead

Last year’s prolonged period of warm weather left many UK demolition contractors battling dust. But even though it’s still winter, forward-thinking firms are already preparing for a repeat. And they have plenty of options to choose from, as Mark Anthony reports.

84

FEATURE

New Kids on the Block HKD Blue is an engineering, manufacturing company that supplies various industries with water-atomising equipment. The company also offers controls and automation software, system infrastructure engineering, and environmental consulting. For dust suppression, HKD claims to be the only supplier with complete remote controlled Variable Water Flow Technology “V-Flow through its GEYSER nozzle. All V-500 units are complete automated: atomised (high pressure) water flow can be increased or decreased depending on the dynamic conditions the job site. The unit is extremely versatile, with a projection range of almost eight metres for smaller projects to 80 metres for large structural demolition projects.

can aim the unit towards the ground where the majority of dust emissions will occur. If the operator finds that the source of the dust emissions requires atomized mist, the unit can spray mist up to 30 metres high.

As a new player in the emerging dust suppression market, HKD Blue is prepared for upcoming demand with a robust dealer network, inventory available, and a factory of over 40 employees.

Most misting cannons have fixed flow rates via fog rings. These machines are limited because the accuracy of the unit relies on the wind, and requires labour to relocate and preposition for proper dust control. With HKD V-500 units, a more powerful 18.6 kW pump providing 45 litres/min at 450psi (low flow rate) and can increase to 363 litres/min at300psi. When greater dust emissions are expected, for example, when an operator predicts a large portion of a building will collapse, the operator

And its journey from contractor and hirer to equipment dealer underlines the faith they have in the product they selected for their own purposes. “We are a hire and contracting company operating a fleet of Powerscreen crushers and screeners and Doppstadt trommels and shredders. We are the ones making the dust, so it was important for us to find the best dust cannon for our own contracting jobs and to help our hire customers manage dust issues effectively,” says Advanced Material Processing’s John Frew. “We initially tried a few different makes of dust cannon and found them to either lack power, be inefficient in containing the

dust or not robust enough to handle the demands of the environments we use them in. Once we tried the Screenpod cannon we knew we had found the solution.” According to Frew, Screenpod Dust cannons create a very fine mist that clings to dust particles and brings them to the ground. “They also use much less water than other models we tried. With water becoming such an expensive commodity this is very important for many customers,” he continues. “It is also safer as the ground is not completely drenched like we found with other cannons.” Screenpod units feature a fullygalvanised and hard-wearing body, and incorporate threestage water pumps that are designed for longevity. All models can be remotely controlled from up to 100 metres away. They oscillate through

86

350 degrees in 25 degree increments so can be easily set to concentrate on a specific area. The also elevate electronically through -20/+60 degrees (S35 elevates manually). There is very little maintenance required and drain taps are easily accessible for drain the machines during winter months. There are six models in the Screenpod range including four static cannons, and two trailer mounted mobile units. • S35 – 3 kW mist fan, 30-40 metre throw • S45 – 7.5 kW mist fan, 35-45 metre throw • S55 – 18.5 kW mist fan, 50-60 metre throw • S65 – 30 kW mist fan, 60-80 metre throw • S35T – Mobile unit with 3 kW mist fan, road legal trailer, 2,500 litre water tank and 12 kVa generator • S45T - Mobile unit with 7.5 kW mist fan, road legal trailer, 2,500 litre water tank and 20 kVa generator. Screenpod Dust Cannons can be purchased exclusively through Advanced Material Processing Ltd in Stirling, Scotland, but the company delivers throughout the UK.

DUST SUPPRESSION

A Name to Trust LDH Attachments has established a formidable reputation as the UK representative for both Okada and Dehaco attachments and – increasingly – for its sale and support of the proven Dehaco range of dust suppression systems. According to LDH’s Eleanor Hearne, the demand for Dehaco dust suppression equipment is driven – primarily – by regulation and also by the environmental awareness of the demolition industry. “Preventing dust emissions during demolition, renovation and recycling operations is becoming increasingly important,” she says. “As a result, governments are applying stricter regulations during demolition operations.” Dehaco and LDH Attachments have responded to this demand. In an attempt to prevent residents and the workforce from suffering from respiratory problems, Dehaco has developed a new generation of innovative Tera dust control units. The range of possible applications has been broadened to encapsulate demolition, waste treatment centres and recycling operations. The core objective of the Tera is to produce and distribute a fine layer of water droplets that combine with the dust particles and bring them down to ground level. Conventional nozzles require intensive maintenance due to the accumulation of lime scale.

But this is not an issue with the revolutionary and patented Demto-Rotor®, which cannot be blocked by such particles. The droplet size is simply adjusted from large to small depending on the application, the water consumption can also be adjusted from 0 maximum to avoid excess consumption. Reducing the water consumption makes for an economical and eco-friendly machine. The Tera can be combined with a Dehaco all-terrain undercarriage or a road legal single or twin axle trailer. Whichever is most appropriate for the Tera and its required applications. The selfsupporting Tera features a generator

88

and 2,200 litre water tank, this unit can be combined with a twin or tri axle trailer and can be deployed to any location, even without power or water amenities. To find out more, visit: www. ldhattachments.co.uk

DUST SUPPRESSION

Going Dutch ODS Environmental is a name that will be familiar to anyone that has looked at the issue of dust suppression. But the company is now able to supply a solution to dust inhalation while using plant and machinery. Working with its Dutch partners, the company is now offering positive pressurisation systems that can be fitted to new machines or retrofitted to existing equipment. According to ODS, Freshfilter produces cab air quality systems for mobile machinery such as haul trucks, shovels, diggers and static operator enclosures. Using HEPA and activated carbon filter elements, these products protect operators in the most hazardous environments. The system controls a positive pressure in the cab, stopping dust from entering the cab and preventing the operator from breathing them in. “We have a CE compliant system built to the highest standards demanded by the EU and the United Kingdom,”

says ODS’ Gary Thomson. “ODS will come to site anywhere in the UK to fit and advise the best system for each piece of plant.” Freshfilter supplies cab air quality systems to provide a healthy breathing air to operator stations on earthmoving machinery used in contaminated areas such as demolition and waste handling, mining, and agriculture. To prevent ambient air from entering the operators’ cab, a slight positive pressure difference is created to ensure that there is always an outflowing airstream from the cabin. The necessary inflowing air for achieving this pressure difference enters the cab through the filtration device. To minimise the amount of inflowing air, the cabin is sealed to approximate air tightness, and a control unit is placed in the cabin to safeguard the pressure. Freshfilter supplies gas filters, particle filters and dust filters conform EN1822,

90

EN779 and EN12941. No respiratory devices have to be used anymore, when filter elements are combined according to the pollution. In the Netherlands, air filtration devices have been required when working in an aromatic, dusty or toxic environment since 1995; for instance, when moving earth of a former gas station or of a former waste belt. Dutch regulations are devised both to protect employers from liability law suits as well as to protect the health of employees when working in harsh conditions. Although air filtration may seem a luxury item in an aromatic environment of a chicken farm, it is a bare necessity when working with asbestos or in dust or toxic fumes. Moreover, strict European legislation for the air quality is likely to find its way into global legislation. Recently for example Canadian laws already require cab air quality systems when working with silica dust. Also in agriculture the demand for air quality improvement is increasing rapidly with the introduction of the class 4 (Europe) or ECPAD/ECPAR/ASABE (US only) standard.
