Where it’s at There are two schools of thought when it comes to building an online brand. There is the Field of Dreams “if you build it, they will come approach” in which you create something online in the (possibly vain) hope that people will want to see it and engage with it. This is the approach we took with the creation of the Diggers and Dozers magazine and its associated YouTube channel and Twitter presence. Then there is the “go where the audience is” approach, which is pretty much the model we followed just under a year ago when we started our journey on the photo and video sharing platform, Instagram. Less than 11 months later, and the Diggers and Dozers Instagram feed is the UK’s largest and most engaged portal for construction equipment photos and video content. By the time you read this, the chances are that the account will have more than 14,000 followers, including most of the key manufacturers and brands that have also embraced the Instagram revolution. What does that mean for you? Well, a lot, potentially. For one thing, we use our Instagram account to share photos and video content that we just don’t have space for on the website or in the magazine. In other words, if you follow us on Instagram, you get to see content that is invisible to those that don’t. Then there is the matter of engagement. If you’re an Instagram user, you know just how easy it is to react to a photo or video; how simple it is to react to what you’re seeing; how quickly you can contact the person or company that posted that image. But there’s more. With the launch of the Instagram Story feature, you can view a live broadcast and get a look behind the scenes. Furthermore, we are starting to make use of the poll feature that allows us to gauge your feedback on specific issues that are impacting the industry. So, if you’re an Instagram user, if you like high quality photos and videos of construction equipment, and if you want to be a part of the industry’s fastest-growing online community, search for DiggersandDozers on Instagram and hit that follow button. And let us put DiggersandDozers in your pocket. You won’t be disappointed.

Fixing Construction’s Productivity Problem The construction industry has had a troubled history with productivity. But that could all change. Even the smallest construction projects are multi-disciplined events that involve hundreds of individual actions. When scaled up to mega project size, managing the sequencing of man, machine and material so that the right things are done at the right time and place is a logistical headache that the industry has been grappling with for generations. Construction is improving – but its productivity improvements are far slower than the wider economy. Part of the problem is that each construction site is unique, with the main players only coming together for that particular project, before moving off to the next job. This has in the past discouraged a more joined up approach. So hindered as it is by project management inefficiencies, contractual misunderstandings and often a lack of communication, can the industry capitalize on growing global investment and learn a few productivity-boosting tricks from the wider world?

Lessons in Innovation

When budget carrier Southwest Airlines found it was already in the lead in its refuelling processes compared to other commercial carriers, it was forced to look elsewhere for inspiration to further reduce its turnaround operations. Most of the firm’s aircraft were grounded for an average of 40 minutes for refuelling between flights, creating what the company felt were unnecessary costs and productivity losses. It found inspiration in Formula One – experienced in turning around a racing car pit stop in as little as 2-3 seconds – and adopted a similar process. This eventually allowed crews to refuel an airplane in just 12 minutes. This sort of lateral bench-marking shows how construction can make inroads in productivity savings. Globally, labour-productivity growth in construction lags far behind that of manufacturing (3.6 percent) or the total economy (2.8 percent), at just one percent a year, according to research by private sector think tank McKinsey Global Institute (MGI). Yet if construction productivity were to catch up with the rest of the world economy, the sector’s value would increase by an estimated $1.6 trillion, fulfilling about half of the world’s annual infrastructure need.

Shaking up the Supply Chain

One of the keys to improved productivity is to ensure the entire supply chain is aligned in its aims. Setting well-defined goals means projects are more likely to meet schedule and cost targets. Suppliers are more likely to engage with an operation standard that they have had a role in establishing, which in turn leads to fewer mistakes, better communication, and a more collaborative approach to problem-solving.

UK utilities company Anglian Water, for example, was facing increasing demands to reduce costs while delivering the same level of service. So, in 2005 the company began an incentive program where the strategy and cultural ethos had to be agreed collectively, from sub-contractors to equipment suppliers. As a result they beat their targets – achieving more than 50 percent carbon emission savings and a 40 percent reduction in construction time. Another key trend for 2018 is offsite construction. Google and Starbucks are already big investors, and now hotel chain Marriott International is taking the process into the mainstream by employing a band of offsite manufacturers as part of its global design strategy. Offsite construction and prefabrication not only helps make up for the short supply of skilled workers across the supply chain – by absorbing up to 60 percent of a project’s labour requirements – but also jumpstarts productivity by reducing timescales and lowering build costs.

Technology for Success

little easier. Increasingly, this is becoming a growing trend in construction. Volvo Construction Equipment’s on-board machine telematics system CareTrack®, for example, is designed to provide updates on fuel status, idle time and logged hours – even how the machine is being used. This helps prevent unscheduled downtime and improves efficiency from a cost, carbon and time perspective.

Rethinking the Old Ways

Productivity improvements at companies are often defined by the technology employed, and even on a small scale, a failure to adapt to new tools can have an adverse effect, even at a national level. If a fifth of small businesses in a developed country like Great Britain are still using fax machines, according to a survey by Enterprise National, is it any surprise the British economy is suffering a poor productivity record? While artificial intelligence (AI) may seem like a distant prospect, tech start-ups are recognizing that aspects of machine learning technology can help them break through into the mainstream. One such example is Slack, which is threatening to shake up ‘traditional’ email by using AI to intuitively group messages by topic and highlight which unread messages are of most importance, cutting down on the time spent manually filtering communications. At the other end of the scale, Amazon is using new technology to ensure productivity improvements keep a fast pace at every level of the company. Workers whose job it is to fulfil orders are kept constantly moving, thanks to hand-held devices that show them what each item looks like, where to find it and how to reach it as quickly as possible. It can, however, make for a strenuous work day in which every second is accounted for. While this is an extreme example of the ways in which technology can push productivity to its limits, digitization can be used to make workers lives a

10

The productivity problem is not uniform, and some sectors and countries suffer worse than others. While Europe’s productivity remains at a consistently low level over the decades, the US has a lower productivity rating than it did in the 1960s, according to MGI. Similarly, civil and industrial sectors and large-scale housing boast a higher productivity record than smaller specialized trades. Construction demand continues to grow and productivity can play a vital role in making the most of these opportunities. To thrive, the industry must shake up old processes, be open to change and adapt to new technologies. Even incremental improvements will save time and money, so companies that invest in the future will start to reap the productivity gains today.

Self-Levelling Wheel Saw. Approved for use on the T870 and several other Bobcat compact loaders, the new WS-SL20 Wheel Saw is designed to cut efficiently through asphalt, rock and concrete surfaces. It has a variable segments wheel, which allows the user to quickly change the width of the wheel (50, 80, 100, 120 mm) in the field, instead of replacing the complete wheel in a workshop (providing a saving of 10 hours in the process).

Providing a maximum lift capacity of 3 tonne and a maximum lift height of nearly 7 metres, the new TL30.70 compact telehandler from Bobcat is designed for a wide range of applications found in the construction and rental industries. The TL30.70 provides an excellent cost-effective alternative to larger 7 metre models, especially where working spaces are tight and increased manoeuvrability is required. With the new model, Bobcat has completed the full range of products from the company for the telehandler market. Performance is not compromised as the TL30.70 offers an outstanding maximum reach of 4 metres with a load of more than 1 tonne. At the maximum lift height, users can lift up to 2 tonne of weight, which is sufficient to place a pallet of heavy bricks in most conditions.

The new Yanmar-powered 7/53R portable compressor supplies 5.0 m3/min (177 cfm) of compressed air at a rated output pressure of 7 bar. Designed to meet O1 trailer category requirements – the 750 kg category – the new 7/53R is ideally suited not only for the rental market but also as a durable, cost-effective machine for the 5.0 m3/min segment, covering the most common applications in construction, utilities and other markets.

The new version of the T870 features a torsion suspension undercarriage, introducing a completely new undercarriage design to the Bobcat compact track loader range. The torsion suspension undercarriage features torsion axles that dampen vibration, combining the comfort of roller suspension and the stability of a solid mount undercarriage with other new features to provide a tracked loader that outperforms all other machines on the market. There will be several new Bobcat attachments launched at Intermat including the new WS-SL20

A Clean Slate The hydraulic breaker SB 202 from Epiroc has already proven itself many times over by providing excellent service for Rathscheck Schiefer in Mayen (Eifel).

state-of-the-art technology, Epiroc develops and produces innovative attachments for excavators used in rock mining, demolition and recycling.

Since it was founded in 1793, Rathscheck Schiefer has been a leading producer of premium quality slate and develops products for designer living spaces. Following considerable expansion – particularly over the past few years – this mediumsized company has significant international reach.

Going Underground Moselschiefer® (Mosella slate) mined at the Katzenberg mine in the Mayen region is Rathscheck Schiefer’s premium product and is used primarily for exclusive architecture projects.

In Epiroc, Rathscheck Schiefer has found a partner with an equally established and market leading position. With

The current main shaft was commissioned in 1959 and, with its 2-branch shaft cross-section, reaches a depth of 220 metres on the 7th level. The latest level opened in 2016 - level 11 reaches depths of 400 metres.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Turning the slate mined underground into highquality end products is a long process. The production of the local Mosella slate has been comprehensively modernised over the past 15 years. In the past, the process was extremely involved and time-consuming, now Rathscheck Schiefer relies on the modern, specially developed machines from Epiroc. The hydraulic breaker SB 202 guarantees efficient mining, reducing costs and enabling slate to be offered at much lower prices today than even a few years ago. At the Katzenberg mine, six SB 202 hydraulic breakers have been in daily use since 2013 – each for between three and four hours per shift. Four of the breakers are mounted on the Bobcat E50, Komatsu PC45 and Schaeff HR18 machines, whilst the remaining two are on hand as reserves. The hydraulic breakers loosen the workable slate, which was previously cut with a diamond saw in a grid corresponding to the geological properties, and break it out of the wall. Wheel loaders put the slate onto the wagons of the underground mine train, which transports it to the hoisting shaft which takes it above ground into the production halls. The work underground is carried out in difficult damp and restricted conditions. Here the strengths of the SB 202 come into their own, with its solid body construction that is particularly suited to this task. Compared with competitors previously used by Rathscheck Schiefer, the hydraulic breakers from Epiroc have proven to be robust and reliable, with a service-friendly design. The simplicity of changing the working tool and the good visibility of the working area ensure precise and user-friendly handling. While some of the previous models required maintenance or repair every week, the SB 202 impresses with consistent, fault-free performance.

easy to carry out the necessary work. The unique solid-body concept from Epiroc stands for high reliability, outstanding versatility, high efficiency and performance, and is known for its extremely maintenance-friendly design. The construction combines the striking mechanism and guide system in a single block of special cast iron, thus reducing the total number of components considerably. This results in an extremely slim and compact form that makes handling easier.

Small Becomes Big One of the development goals of the SB series was to offer the most reliable hydraulic breaker on the market. And in the unlikely event that unplanned maintenance is required, it must be extremely

The recoil force of the piston is automatically used to increase the power, without additional hydraulic energy. Consequently the stress from vibrations is extremely low. The ventilation of the breaker’s percussion chamber, that protects the breaker from wear, and the integrated water spraying system are further advantages. Other benefits of the SB 202 include the floating bushing for easy replacement on-site with a normal hand tool, the installed pressure relief valve, the integrated dust wiper, which prolongs the service life of the bushing and supporting bars, and the AutoStart function, which makes handling the tool much easier.

JCB’s New Year Payrise JCB shop floor employees have returned to work to a New Year pay rise of 3.9% and order books at their strongest in the company’s history. The 2018 increase, which is linked to November 2017’s Retail Price Index (RPI), is part of a three year wage deal and took effect from January 1st. It follows a £500 Christmas bonus paid to all of JCB’s 5,500 UK employees.

“The industry in which we operate is doing very well at the moment, which is not only good news for JCB, it’s good news for our region and good news for Britain,” says JCB Chairman Lord Bamford. “Our spending with UK suppliers has increased substantially over the past year and we are already off to a very strong start in 2018 with a very healthy order bank in place. In my view there is every reason to be optimistic about the future and in particular the future of the British economy.

Over the past 12 months JCB has recruited more than 1,200 people at its 11 UK factories in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Wales and handed permanent contracts to 150 agency employees – with more to follow this year.

“With unemployment at its lowest level for more than 40 years, we face some challenges with recruitment but that is a great challenge to have to overcome and a very positive position for the UK to find itself in.”

In addition, JCB has increased its purchasing spend globally to more than £2 billion a year and in the past 12 months spending with the company’s 2,500 UK suppliers has risen by 13% compared to 2016. This came as the company launched 46 new products.

The pay increase follows acceptance in 2016 by GMB members of a three year deal. It affects around 3,200 shop floor employees at JCB’s Staffordshire plants in Rocester, Uttoxeter, Cheadle, Rugeley and its factories in Wrexham and Foston, Derbyshire.

JCB has this week gone into production with a new and innovative range of site dumpers at its World HQ in Staffordshire in a move which will create around 70 new jobs over the next 12 months.

“The long-term pay deal agreed last year gave us the stability we needed to plan and has delivered a robust pay rise for JCB’s shop floor employees,” says Chief Executive Officer Graeme Macdonald. “The outlook for 2018 is positive with markets all over the world in exceptionally good shape.” “2017 was a good year for the company which has generated more job security for GMB members and we welcome the pay rise which was agreed as part of the three year deal,” says GMB Works Convenor Gordon Richardson.

These milestones will be marked by a series of special events at Intermat, which will take place alongside a presentation of several new developments in the Doosan excavator range. The first of these will be seen on the top-of-therange 52 tonne DX530LC-5 crawler excavator which in the near future will incorporate Doosan’s innovative D-ECOPOWER technology for the first time. Previously only available on the DX380LC-5 model, the D-ECOPOWER system will be available on both the DX530LC-5 and the next model in the range – the 50 tonne DX490LC-5 – and provides operators with increases in productivity and fuel efficiency, as well as smoother controls.

Manitou Awarded for Innovation The Manitou group, a world leader in rough-terrain handling, earned the “Equipment and Material” prize in the “Components and Attachments” category at the “Intermat Innovation Awards. ” This distinction recognises the group for its patented machine stabilisation system for the MRT 2470 and MRT 3050 models. The prizes were handed out at the preIntermat event in Paris. A pioneer in the market of rotating telescopic forklifts, the Manitou group, a leader for several decades in this sector, saw great success since launching the MRT 2470 and MRT 3050 models. Presented in 2017 at a “Keynote” reported throughout the world, these two machines allow the group to take the “Equipment and Materials” prize at the international “Intermat Innovation Awards” competition. This brought to light the innovations that have contributed to progress in the areas of industry and construction and materials. The jury, made up of 14 professionals from seven different countries, championed the strain gauge system of the MRT 2470 and MRT 3050, which measures the strain on the stabilisers’ axes. This recognition system improves reading the information regarding the strain applied to the ground, and automatically modifies the load capacity of the machine. This allows the user to identify on the

dashboard the pressure of the stabilisers on the ground and their range of expansion, which also contributes to increasing its safety. “We are always looking to optimise our users’ experience. Thanks to this new system, developed and patented by Manitou, handling operations are more precise and safer, which allows our clients to considerably increase their productivity,” says Arnaud Boyer, VP Marketing and Product Development. “Awarded by a panel of experts in construction and infrastructure, this prize makes the group proud. It acknowledges, recognises and highlights the research and development work we have undertaken for several years.”

Mercian turns to Hyundai Mercian Skip Hire, based at Kings Norton on the outskirts of Birmingham is said to be one of the fastest growing skip hire businesses in the West Midlands and have been trading for over 12 years. In recent years the company has invested heavily in new trucks and plant & machinery to keep the business at the top of its game, enabling them to offer the most reliable service to its customers, many of which are blue chip national companies.

evaluating the machines like for like,” says Mercian’s Site Manager Stephen Shiels. “We really liked the look of the Hyundai’s and felt that they represented excellent value for money, in addition feedback from our operators was very good regarding the Hyundai’s.”

Historically in the past Mercian had used competitors’ excavators and wheeled loaders but in more recent years the company has turned to Hyundai kit supplied by local dealer Molson Group.

“Molson offered the best overall deal, so we went with them and opted for the premium extended warranty package, so for us it’s literally a case of just adding fuel, which offers us great peace of mind going forward,” says Shiels. “We are now three years into this working relationship with Molson and we are already in the process

of planning the next upgrade to our fleet of machines”.

The machines also benefit from additional heavy duty underside belly guards to prevent damage from any potential debris build up around the engine or transmission, fuel tank guarding, hitch and steering cylinder guards are also provided as standard in waste spec as is automatic hose protection and air pre-cleaner with mesh screen.

The oldest Hyundai on the fleet is an R 210LC-9 hydraulic excavator which was a second-hand unit supplied by Molson, this machine is primarily engaged in feeding shredded material onto an MK Group FBS1200 feeder belt which feeds a STS920 trommel screen.

Molson also supplied and fitted the HL960-9A’s with SG Revolution air cushioned solid tyres which have proven to be the ideal choice in this kind of application. A Lincoln Auto-Lube system is also fitted and an in cab RDS Loadmaster – Alpha 50 weigh loader systems were also installed.

By contrast the newest machine on the fleet is a 6-month-old HX220L hydraulic excavator is fitted with a fixed demo style grab mounted via a Geith fully automatic hydraulic quick hitch which it uses to load the shredder.

“These machines have proven to be excellent for our family business, the operators are on them all day, every day and they love them and as we know happy operators are productive operators,” says Shiels. “It’s well known that machines deployed into the waste sector take a beating, such is the harsh nature of the environment they are working in, but these Hyundai’s have proven to be more than up to the challenge in every aspect.”

The prime movers around the yard are a pair of Hyundai HL760-9A wheeled loading shovels. The Waste Handler model includes a number of significant upgrades over its standard counterpart in the wheeled loader range. Including: uprated heavy duty axles for improved performance under load and frequent braking; front and rear window guards; and heavy duty rear grill guard.

Longcliffe’s Terex Triple

Calcium carbonate and limestone processor, Longcliffe, is using a number of Terex Trucks’ proven haulers to move premium limestone and recycled materials around its quarry in Derbyshire. Hidden in the heart of Derbyshire, Longcliffe’s quarry is home to one of the purest and largest limestone basins in Great Britain. Running an around-the-clock operation, the company extracts, processes and delivers more than one million tonnes of limestone and dolomite products annually. Helping to keep production on site at an all-time high, Longcliffe is using Terex Trucks’ proven off-highway machines to move material around its site. Longcliffe’s partnership with Terex Trucks was first established in 2013 when it issued a tender to replace a dump truck in its fleet that had come to the end of its lifespan. “The company had been happily buying machines from a particular brand, but when I came into the business we were looking to replace a dumper and I wanted to see what else was out there,” says Chris Wainwright, operations director at Longcliffe. “Terex Trucks and its dealer, TDL Equipment, came up with an offer that was as good as the one our existing equipment supplier was offering. This gave us the opportunity to try something different.” TDL supplied a 55-tonne payload TR60 on site at the quarry near Matlock for demonstration purposes, and that’s when optimism within

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The Brassington Moor Quarry is split into two working areas that are connected by a tunnel, which was initially somewhat of a concern for TDL’s area sales manager, Gaz Bourne. Not leaving anything to chance, he was meticulous in ensuring that the TR70 was indeed the right truck for the site, triple-checking the dimensions of the tunnel against the rigid hauler. With one TR70 working well transporting blasted rock from the face of the quarry to the processing plant, Longcliffe took the decision in May 2014 to add another Terex Trucks machine to its fleet. However, this time the business opted for an articulated dump truck in the form of the versatile TA400.

Longcliffe started to build. While the proven rigid hauler impressed, Longcliffe required a machine with a bigger payload, which is where the TR70 found favour. “The feedback on Terex Trucks’ rigid hauler was good, and following tests on fuel consumption, cycle times and carrying capacity, we wanted to give the machine a try,” says Wainwright.

“We quickly got in contact with Gaz at TDL to get an idea of what Terex Trucks could offer. We did some tests, brought in some machines from other companies and ran trials looking at turnaround times, payloads, fuel consumption etc. After all that we were most impressed with the Terex Trucks TA400.” Happily operating two machines from Terex Trucks within its large fleet of equipment, Longcliffe placed TDL at the top of its call list in May 2017 when the time came to acquire a new truck. Longcliffe challenged the Scottish manufacturer to modify the TR70 slightly to increase its body volume by adding side extensions and tweaking the machine to make it a perfect fit for its operator.

“I gave Terex Trucks a long list of specifications to make the truck just right for me and they didn’t disappoint,” says operator Andy Needham. “I’ve got 40 years’ experience in quarrying and I’ve operated a lot of equipment but the TR70 is by far the most comfortable ride – even after 30 to 40 rounds a day.”

Well suited to the application, which is made up of hard rock, the Motherwell-built rigid dump truck was created to journey on through the toughest terrains. The TR70 is fitted with a Detroit Diesel MTU-2000TA 12 cylinder, 24-litre engine that provides a maximum torque of 3,323 Nm and a gross power of 567 kW.

“Terex Trucks’ dumpers are built to do what they should do and with our new TR70, we’re getting additional body volume through the side extensions,” says Wainwright. “The fuel consumption of both the articulated and rigid dumpers is better than other trucks we’ve got and the aftermarket service and response times we’ve received from TDL have been good. There’s every chance that as our older machines come up for renewal, we’ll replace those with Terex Trucks’ dumpers too.

company runs a fleet of 8 hydraulic excavators from a number of other manufacturers including Komatsu and Hyundai.

Director Simon Saxon. The company engages in excavation works, civil engineering and small demolition works and is experiencing steady growth. This growth see’s the company bidding for larger jobs and with that in mind they are investing in more modern kit and attachments.

These machines will now be joined by two LiuGong excavators consisting of 30-tonne class 928E and a 50-tonne class 950E model, both of which will be supplied with time saving OilQuick systems supplied and fitted by ECY Haulmark.

The business currently runs a fleet of 12 machines ranging from sub-one tonne micro excavators up to 40 tonne excavators, with additional kit including crushers and tipper lorries with grabs. The excavator fleet features a mixture of brands, with the latest to join them being a 30-tonne class LiuGong 933E, which will be supplied with an OilQuick attachment by ECY Haulmark.

“When we first started looking at LiuGong, we talked to people in the industry about them and we were impressed with what we heard, so we made contact with CPMS discussed a deal which was extremely competitive and went for it!” says Bagnall Demolition’s Director Andrew Fisk. “The main questions for us were, are they are strong and do they have good build quality as demolition is hard work on machines, our operators said they tick all the boxes and that’s why they are joining the fleet”.

“We took a LiuGong on demo and ran it beside two other brands in our fleet, all of our experienced operators spent time in it and all were impressed with the way it performed,” says Saxon. “We had a good look at all the key components that are fitted into them and quickly realised they are all top name and well proven parts from blue chip suppliers, all in a very competitive package”.

North Wales based Family owned business Thomas Plant Hire was established in 1999 and initially started out with a second hand JCB 3CX. Today the fleet totals 1200 machines from a wide variety of manufacturers including Hitachi, Komatsu, Volvo and Caterpillar. In addition to its Holywell base, the company now has a second depot in Widnes. The company has recently added two 40 tonne class LiuGong 939E hydraulic excavators to the fleet. “We have heard good things about the LiuGong products from others in the industry and we were also very pleased with the availability of the machines, we are confident they will be a good fit for our fleet,” says Managing Director Wyn Thomas.

“We were very happy with the lads at CPMS who have been extremely helpful all the way through, nothing has been too much trouble or bother and for us that level of personal touch means a lot, its something a lot of the major manufacturers have lost these days,” says owner Wes Lawrence. Another local business investing in LiuGong excavators is Bagnall Demolition, who have been trading in the area for some 35 years. This
