DIGGERS & DOZERS

Exerting Influence A week or so before this edition of Diggers and Dozers was scheduled to go to the printer, I was invited up to the JCB World Headquarters for what the manufacturer described as a “social media influencer event” to mark the recent introduction of a range of new compact excavators. Now I walk a fine line between two worlds. On the one hand, I am a dyed-in-the-wool journalist, which is why I am writing this column and why my name appears on the masthead of this and a few other magazines. As a result, I saw these new JCB compact machines a few months ago when they were first unveiled to the international trade press. Yet Diggers and Dozers is, in effect, a blog. We draw a huge amount of our traffic from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and – increasingly – Instagram. All of which means that we operate in the sphere of social media, along with the bloggers and forum contributors that make up this merry band. Quite how much influence I wield, however, is not for me to judge. But this event hosted by JCB, and a previous one hosted by Liebherr, mark a step-change for the industry and its media. Both JCB and Liebherr have recognised that its potential customer base has moved online; that it absorbs its knowledge and information from YouTube and Facebook every bit as much as it does from magazines. And there’s more. According to JCB, they do not view social media as purely a broadcast medium. In fact, a large proportion of their social media effort is aimed at monitoring the likes of Twitter and Facebook for customer feedback, and to monitor industry and equipment trends. We live in an age in which social media has been hijacked by micro-celebrities keen to share the contents of their breakfast bowl; by teenagers pouting like so many ornamental carp; by big businesses looking to flog their wares whilst overlooking the “social” part of social media. I have no choice – This is the world in which I now exist. But make no mistake. Social media is here to stay. And whether you’re a creator, a consumer, or both, you ignore it at your peril.

Paper Case

DIGGERS & DOZERS

One of the first new CASE D Series 290D MH excavators to be sold in the UK has recently been delivered to Thompson Plant Hire where it’s been put straight to work at Shotton Paper Mill in Deeside.

Thompson Plant Hire, based in Maryport on the Cumbrian coast, have a fleet of more than 100 vehicles and has recently expanded their hire fleet with the addition of a new CX290D MH, supplied by CASE dealer CJ Leonard. One of the latest in the D Series excavator range, the CX290D MH also benefits from CASE’s proven Tier 4 Final engine technology that delivers a powerful and fuel-efficient performance. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) after-treatment system and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) means a DPF-free solution saves time and maintenance costs. The CX290D MH also offers a host of new safety features to ensure the safe operation of the elevating cab. These features, along with the fact that Thompsons already run several CASE excavators including a new D Series CX300D and a CX800B that have proven their reliability, plus the strong relationship with their local dealer are all reasons why they chose another CASE machine. “We like CASE machines,” says Kevin Thompson Director, of Thompson’s. “We already have three other CASE excavators that have been working in quarries throughout the northwest. They are very reliable and performance is very good, plus the operators really like them. We also know we can rely on CJ Leonards for excellent back-up which is very important to us. With all these boxes ticked it was a fairly easy decision to go with another CASE machine.”

working area from a height of 5.06m. Safety features to ensure safe operation of the elevating cab includes a rigid elevating structure that enables the operator to work with confidence when the machine is at full reach, plus the cab can also be lowered from inside the cab or with an external control switch, for greater operator safety.

Specifically designed and engineered for material handling applications, this machine is perfectly suited to working in harsh environments. A reversible fan means the radiators work more effectively, ensuring performance is kept high in these types of dusty conditions.

A new device prevents interference between the machines and its attachments through sensors placed on the bucket cylinder. This means a much less shaky cab, better operator comfort and greater safety around the machine. There is also a new LED working light package which is three times brighter than its halogen equivalent. A third camera is also available to further enhance all round visibility.

Its superior reach and lifting capacity makes short work of moving a variety of waste, and scrap metal and the dedicated elevating cab provides the operator with a commanding view of the

Liebherr in Stereo Amongst municipalities and service providers, Liebherr Stereoloaders have an outstanding reputation when it comes to demanding winter related tasks.

Both of the recently introduced L 514 and L 518 Liebherr Stereoloaders live up to this reputation. With their new Z-unit bar linkage, they can work reliably in the battle against snow and ice with a variety of tool attachments. As “Speeders”, the new models can achieve a top speed of 40 km/h. Thanks to this and other innovations, the Liebherr Stereoloaders are an economical alternative to conventional snow clearing equipment. Use of the versatile wheel loader as a winter service machine reduces its down time in winter. Operators can thus benefit from increased productivity. Their manoeuvrability is particularly useful if snow drifts are a hindrance to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Thanks to the stereo steering, even inner courtyards, narrow parking areas or narrow alleyways in residential areas can be easily and reliably cleared of snow and ice by machine operators. As a customer option, Liebherr offers the new Emission Stage IV / Tier 4f-compliant L 514 and L 518 Stereoloaders as “Speeders”. In this version, they can achieve a top

speed of 40 km/h. This enables municipalities and service providers to deliver quick and reliable winter services over long distances quickly and efficiently. Liebherr has developed the robustness of the new models in various ways. For example, in the axles, where automatic self-locking differentials provide a high degree of traction on snowy and icy surfaces. The use of snow chains enable stable driving characteristics. The stereo steering also provides safety: The steered rear axle enabled Liebherr engineers to reduce the articulation angle of the Stereoloader from the customary 40° to 30°. This resulted in improved stability and security against tipping, as well as higher tipping loads. In winter, the selection of the correct attachment depends on the weather situation and local conditions. Most commonly, municipalities and service providers use Liebherr Stereoloaders for winter services with a light material bucket, snow chains and a grit spreader. Equipped in this way, these manoeuvrable machines become especially versatile. The light material bucket is suitable for simple clearance tasks, as well as to load snow onto an HGV for removal. With a hydraulically swivelling snow blade, the Stereoloaders can clear roads and tracks of compacted snow. Using a sweeper, they can move smaller amounts of loose, powdery snow. Larger amounts of snow can be dealt with using a snow blower. Thanks to the new Z-unit bar linkage and powerful operating hydraulics, the L 514 and L 518 can operate effectively with these and other attachments. In addition, a newly constructed hydraulic quick hitch makes equipment changing more efficient. In the winter operators really appreciate such convenience!

Scunthorpe Silver Celebration Scunthorpebased AMS Bobcat Limited, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire in the UK, is celebrating the company’s 25th anniversary this year.

Established in 1992, AMS Bobcat took its name from the initials of the surnames of its three founders, George Aitkenhead, Alex Murray and Peter Sowerby. Initially set up as a hire, service and sales company for compact machinery, AMS Bobcat began business mainly hiring skid-steer loaders and mini-excavators to the steel works based in Scunthorpe. AMS placed its first order with Bobcat in 1993 for 35 skidsteer loaders and attachments. Soon after the order, AMS was appointed the Bobcat Dealer for Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire and North Norfolk and has remained in this role ever since. The company is one of the longest standing Bobcat dealers in the

10

UK. Over the intervening years, AMS has sold in excess of 3500 new Bobcat units into a wide range of industries, including construction, agriculture, shipping, plant hire, mining, landscaping and demolition. “We are delighted to be celebrating our 25th anniversary this year,” says Managing Director, Steve McIntosh. “As a Bobcat dealer for almost all of that period, there have been many memorable moments from appearing live from our stand at the Muck99 show on Channel 4’s Big Breakfast programme to several firsts including the sale of the UK’s first Bobcat 17 m telehandler in Hull Docks and the first of the very latest Bobcat S450 skid-steer loaders in the UK farming industry.“

Bobcat in Suspense Bobcat has launched a new version of the company’s top-of-the-range T870 compact tracked loader featuring a new torsion suspension undercarriage, replacing the previous T870 model with a roller suspension system.

Introducing a completely new undercarriage design to Bobcat compact tracked loaders, the torsion suspension undercarriage features torsion axles that dampen vibration, combining the comfort of roller suspension and the stability of a solid mount undercarriage with other new features to provide a tracked loader that outperforms all other machines on the market. The new T870 torsion suspension machine offers 10% more lift capacity than the previous roller suspension model. It is available with a wide range of standard and optional features and in a range of configurations to match emissions and specification requirements for all European, Middle East, Africa and Russia and CIS markets. The 5-link torsion suspension undercarriage minimises rocking when lifting a load high or when performing grading tasks. With the new Bobcat undercarriage, there is no tradeoff between comfort and performance. An additional link on the rear axle stabilises the system to decrease rocking or bouncing and increase productivity. The unique fifth link acts like an independent suspension, increasing ride comfort and greatly reducing the rocking effect that is typically associated with torsion suspensions. Equipped in this way, the Bobcat T870 compact tracked loader feels even more stable and grounded, which improves ride quality and delivers unmatched performance when lifting and grading.

for maximum durability. Five easy-to-access grease zerks ensures regular greasing is an easy and simple process. They are also recessed for protection from job site objects and debris.

The larger rear idler is positioned further back within the undercarriage system, allowing for greatly increased downward force to the cutting edge of the bucket or attachment. The added diameter of the new rear idler provides optimal contact with the track, which maintains tension and protects against de-tracking.

An open shape design improves ease of cleanout and debris shedding. A horizontally mounted hydraulic track tension cylinder opens more room between the carriage and the track for easier clean-out. The undercarriage is sloped on both sides to shed material, such as sand, dirt, mud and debris better than the previous design. Additionally, raised cut-outs between the rollers allow for easier cleaning. A new roller clean-out opening provides additional access to clean mud, dirt and debris from the undercarriage.

Longer tracks provide increased flotation and reduced ground pressure, by increasing surface area and ground contact for better flotation, ride quality and improved performance in soft conditions. Auto track tensioning increases uptime by automatically ensuring the proper track tension. This eliminates the need to manually adjust the loader’s track tension with a grease gun and provides consistent tensioning to minimise the chance of loosening and de-tracking in tough working conditions.

Increased durability and reliability result from a cast front roller and idler mount, which bear much of the load when pushing and lifting. Where other manufacturers rely on layered, welded steel, Bobcat undercarriages have a solid, cast-steel front roller and idler mount design. This eliminates welds and distributes stress across one seamless component that has additional metal and strength precisely where it is needed most.

The durable design of the new T870 model further improves uptime performance, with forged steel idlers guiding and supporting the track around the ends of the undercarriage. The solid steel design of the idlers ensures they stand up to harsh operating conditions. Hydraulic hoses are carefully routed and protected inside the undercarriage. This durable design keeps hoses free from snags and obstacles on the job site, preventing costly downtime.

The new Bobcat drive motor is more reliable and it is easier to maintain than ever before. The outer bearing life has been improved dramatically thanks to continuous lubrication from oil in the hydraulic system. The diameter of the drive shaft inside the gearbox is also 15% larger than before, which greatly enhances durability. The outer cavity reservoir housed within the new drive motor is now easier to flush and fill with the addition of two service ports that can be accessed without removing the track or sprocket.

The self-contained axle system contains an inner bar surrounded by four rubber cords. The inner bar is heat-treated for maximum strength, which translates to increased longevity and more uptime. Undercarriage bushings and seals are made with high-grade, high-quality steel

The T870 loader is intended to run the most powerful attachments from Bobcat such as wheel saws to cut trenches for cable/pipe laying (including the WS32 wheel saw providing an 80 cm dig depth) and the highly productive forestry cutter attachment. As well as work with these powerful attachments, the high productivity of the machine provides new solutions for other demanding applications such as ship trimming, grading, lifting, planing, landscaping, trenching, rental, construction and demolition.

Burnside’s First Volvo Following his first impressions at Volvo’s ‘Live It Dig It’ event at Alloa, Scotland, this March and a successful demonstration, Ian Orr, Proprietor of Burnside Plant & Piling Contractors, he has opted for his first Volvo excavator in the guise of the twenty-two tonne EC220E. Purchasing his first general purpose excavator from Volvo is a new departure for Ian Orr, having traditionally been associated with alternative brands, but the high level of operator comfort, smoothness of control and overall stability and performance of the EC220E persuaded him to ‘bite the bullet’ and purchase one! “Visiting Volvo’s ‘Live It. Dig It’ event gave me and my operators a really good chance to look at the Volvo excavator range close up, and it was the EC220E that really impressed us,” says Orr. “The machine was so responsive and smooth to operate and when we started to discuss a deal, I was pleasantly surprised with the competitive package on offer, together with the prospect of a high residual value four years down the line. Following a further evaluation on one of the sites we are currently working on, we made up our minds and decided to order one – we couldn’t be more pleased with the result.”

pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a fourteen-vent, climate control system. An adjustable, easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real-time information of the machine functions. The EC220E will be deployed on a variety of applications including general groundworks, but will also be paired up with a Movax sheet piling rig which will pick up on the Geith quickattachment bracket supplied with the machine. “We specialise in permanent and temporary retaining walls, especially sheet-pile retaining walls, cofferdams and king-post retaining walls, with about 90% of our work being contracted in to Advance Construction who are one of the largest house-building companies here in Scotland,” says Orr. “The new EC220E will become the optimum tool in our arsenal for general excavation as well as sheet-piling duties.”

Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp, the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. Operator comfort is another major plus point, with the Volvo Care cab providing plenty of leg room and foot space. Excellent all round visibility is enhanced by

CHS Sees the Light Ahead of the festive events season, Bristol-based company CHS has purchased ten prestigious TL90 3e LED lighting towers from Midlandsbased lighting specialists Morris Site Machinery.

These ten TL90’s will bring the current fleet up to date with up to 160 hours of uninterrupted operation. Robust, reliable and with low emissions, they will also ensure greater visibility and cost savings which will enable high performance on every level. CHS specified to add the dawn to dusk ECO sensor feature across all ten of the fleet which enables the lights to turn on and off automatically. This is a vital feature as the majority of business comes from local industry where shift patterns of workers means lights are left on all day in remote areas. The Bristol-based hire company have been trading in the hire industry for many years, specialising in hazardous environment equipment, pipe cutting, tank lighting and metal preparation. The ten machines have already been hired out to light the way at Bristol’s Balloon festival last month, illuminating the walkways and car parks for visitors as they made their way to and from the event. “Our previous equipment consisted of hand wind-up mast lighting towers so there was a desperate need to modernise to bring the fleet up to date,” says Claire Bruce, Director at CHS. “I was stunned by the compact size of the TL90 and the clear and crisp light from all of the four 300W heads. We have received great service from Stuart Selway at Morris Site Machinery throughout the buying process so to us, it was a no-brainer.”

Another Volvo L220H loading shovel has been delivered to Collier Quarrying & Recycling, a division of the Collier Group, located at Cowdenbeath in Fife, and takes up rehandling duties at the company’s Goat Hill Quarry along with two L220H’s that were delivered at the end of 2014.

Volvo Scales Goat Hill The new recruit joins the team of Volvo frontline shovels and has allowed a veteran L150C to semi-retire for use on secondary and standby duties as production at the Goat Hill facility steps up. In particular, the machines are in charge of the stocking out area where high-quality Plus-65 PSV stone chippings are loaded out on both the company’s fleet of Volvo road-going lorries as well as general haulage distributing material as far afield as the Midlands. And since a significant financial investment has been made in establishing a block making and concrete panel making production plant, the need for another loading shovel equipped with a 5.6m³ rehandling bucket has been crucial for this new venture. The Volvo L220H features a 13-litre stage-IV final engine developing 373hp in a relatively low rpm range of between 1,300 and 1,400 rpm. The machine also benefits from Volvo designed and manufactured driveline components including Optishift with torque converter lock-up and reverse-by-braking feature – all designed to offer considerable fuel savings on every shift. Fuel savings are

further enhanced by the Volvo Eco-pedal, encouraging the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve. It’s not just Volvo Construction Equipment products that are favoured by the Collier Group, since the company also operates eighteen Volvo road-going vehicles in the guise of concrete mixers, haul and drag units, low loaders and eight wheeled tippers, and is also a fan of the FMX range of trucks. Collier Quarrying & Recycling produce a highquality Plus-65 PSV stone product besides recycled Type-1 and Class-6F2 materials. In addition, the company produces sub and top soils along with bulk infill materials. The Goat Hill facility houses a recycling centre that can accommodate inert construction waste, such as road plannings, demolition materials, soils and sub-base materials and as mentioned, now has a highly productive block-making and concrete panel making plant recently established on site. Together with its heavy plant and haulage fleet, the Group is fully equipped to take on large site clearance and earth moving contracts from start to finish.

Landscaper Reaps Rewards S&R Landscapes is reaping the benefits of enhanced machinery performance thanks to the purchase of Kubota’s U27-4 mini excavator from BTE Plant Sales Ltd. Due to the diverse nature of the work undertaken, S&R Landscapes utilise a wide range of specialist attachments specified by ExacOne, including tilt rotators, landscaping rakes, augers and rotating grapples to name but a few. It was the management of these implements that lead S&R Landscapes to invest in the Kubota U27-4 mini-excavator. “Using different implements allows us to complete a number of different jobs in different applications, but the work involved in changing each implement can cause a lot of machinery downtime”, says Max Smith, Director at S&R Landscapes.

“The purchase of the Kubota U27-4 mini excavator has not only provided a much more powerful performance, but the machine also boasts twin hydraulic lines to run all our attachments. These hydraulic lines will automatically change the hydraulic hoses, meaning we can change each implement without having to leave the cab, allowing us to complete jobs far more efficiently.” With the largest cab in its class, the U excavator series from Kubota is the most reliable and durable machine on the market to date, able to meet the demands of the toughest tasks in the tightest spaces with ease. In addition, the excavator utilises Kubota’s latest industry leading engine technology, designed to offer maximum fuel efficiency, minimal noise and vibration, as well as low emission levels that meet current regulations. “We have been running the excavator for a few months now and the efficiency gains we have reaped in such a small amount of time are clear to see,” says Smith. “Combing the reliability and compact nature of the machine with simple implement changes allows us to meet any landscaping requirement quickly and efficiently.”

BSP AND COLETS CREATE NEW PILING RIG A new purpose-built piling rig to drive piles for smaller projects with limited access, working space or weight has been designed and built by BSP International Foundations (BSP) in collaboration with Colets Piling, the Sudbury, Suffolk-based contractor and piling equipment rental specialist.

the Ipswich-based company to collaborate with us in the manufacture and development of an excavator-mounted piling rig, built to our recommendations and specifications. This collaboration between our two companies has resulted in the JX model, the first purpose-built piling rig of its type in the UK which was built and ready for work in six months.”

Following discussions with its rental customers Colets Piling acknowledged there was a need for a piling rig to top drive steel or concrete foundation piles for small to medium-sized housing projects. According to Colets the main criteria for the new rig included ease of transportation without the need of movement orders, secondly a reduction in the costs of piling mats for the rig to operate on as this aspect can significantly increase the cost of a housing development and thirdly, increased productivity with quicker set-up, faster drive times and reliability.

“BSP is delighted to have been approached by Colets Piling to participate in the design and build of the new JX rig,” says Ray Ransome, BSP’s senior sales manager. “During the building process we encountered a few technical problems but these were resolved quickly with minimum production delay. Now that the machine is working in the piling field, we are extremely confident it will prove to be a valuable addition to the Colet Piling fleet and ultimately provide many years of productive service,” he adds.

John Walter, Colet’s sales manager says: “As BSP is one of the world’s leading manufacturers with over 110 years’ experience in designing and building foundation equipment we decided to approach

To provide the base machine Colets Piling chose JCB to supply a number of JS excavator base units. These machines have already been introduced into the company’s contract and rental fleet in rotary drilling versions. A standard JS200 excavator with a 20t operating weight and equipped with JCB’s latest Tier 4 final emission compliant diesel engine developing 129kW, was supplied as the base machine but with a number of subtle changes to optimise the stability and performance of the completed JX unit. As part of its involvement in the project BSP offered two hammer options. The JX20-6 fitted with a 1.5t dropweight and a 10m long mast or a JX25-8 fitted with a 2t dropweight hammer and a 13m long mast. Research showed more interest in a machine that could cope with 8m long piles, so the JX25-8 was the preferred option. A key technical point of the project is the overall mass of the JX25-8 rig which exerts a ground pressure of only 0.57kg/cm2, further reduced once the hammer is in place and sitting on the pile – as the pile takes the weight of the hammer. The rig then only guides the pile into the ground while the hammer is driving. The JX square track configuration of the base provides maximum stability during driving.

between six and seven metres in depth on the site. All the piles were driven to a set with the DX hammer performing a 300mm long stroke.

With a working radius of 3.1m, the mast can be placed in any position around the base of the machine while the five degrees of mast rotation, left or right, helps keep the mast vertical when working on uneven ground. The rig can self-erect its mast without the aid of additional plant. It also has two dedicated lift winches, one to raise the hammer and the other to lift a pile with a maximum weight of 1.5t. Hydraulic arms retain the bottom of the pile to guide it in place once positioned at any point around the machine. There is also the option of a telescopic foot fitted to the bottom of the mast to guide the pile.

Tritech operator Karl Amos, with many years’ experience of rig operation, was happy with its performance after getting to grips with the new controls and was able to achieve a production rate of 150 linier metres driven per day. Each pile requires two, four metre long sections driven but the rig was able to double this to meet the demands of competitive pricing for this particular application. Tritech have subsequently completed a number of jobs driving both concrete square piles and steel tubes and are still currently renting the rig for the foreseeable future.

The hydraulic hammers driven by the base unit are from BSP’s popular compact DX range, designed for infrastructure foundation work in the rail sector market as an alternative option in a demanding environment. The DX hammer’s versatility and low power consumption of 40kW made it the obvious choice for the new JX rig.

In the meantime BSP is in the process of tailoring the rig for Tritech giving them the option to buy in the coming months. The combination of an established JS excavator as the base unit and with a calculated ground force of only 0.57kg/cm2 it makes a good case for the JX rig as an economical solution for driving short piles of either steel or concrete on construction sites with restrictions on access, working space or weight.

According to BSP the hammer’s fully controllable hydraulically accelerated drop weight it will outperform other hydraulic hammers in its weight class and, in some cases, has been recorded to double productivity. Estimates suggest that over 250 liner metres of pile can be driven in one shift using the JX rig. The DX range of hammers are equally capable of driving steel tubes, “H” piles, wooden or precast concrete pile sections to an ultimate load bearing capacity of over 1800kN. In operation the hammer retains a dedicated helmet or cap suited to the pile to be driven, keeping the centre line of the hammer in line with the pile. This ensures maximum transfer of energy from the hammer to the pile. A plastic dolly is used in the helmet to prevent metal to metal contact of the drop weight onto the helmet.

Making a Global Impact Hydraulic Piling Hammers, Excavator/ Rig Mounted or Crane Suspended

Efficient, Economical and versatile hammer for driving steel, concrete, wooden or plastic piles. Designed for marine or inland environments. Wide range of interchangeable drop weights. “Take control”

Shock absorbers are also built into the hammer to dampen the pile recoil, reducing vibration to the cage and hydraulic cylinder assembly. This can reduce any down time of the hammer or the rig. Once piling is completed the mast is lowered and the JX rig can be driven on to a low loader, without the need to remove the hammer from the mast.

One of the first projects involving the JS Rig was the driving of concrete piles on the third phase of a new housing development being built by Bovis Homes in Congleton, Cheshire. The new rig was hired to Tritech Piling & Foundations by Colets Piling to drive 200mm square concrete piles

Smiths Chooses Doosan Smiths Ltd, based at Stonehouse in Gloucestershire in the UK, has purchased new Doosan DX27Z and DX62R-3 mini-excavators from Kellands Ltd of Bridgwater in Somerset, the local Authorised dealer for the Doosan and Bobcat equipment ranges.

The five new DX27Z and five new DX62R-3 models purchased by Smiths are available for rent from the company’s plant hire operation.

Since that time the company has grown into one of the largest businesses in Gloucestershire. The family is still wholly committed to the business with two generations actively involved day to day. This engenders a community culture which rewards hard work, teamwork and a commitment to customer service that can be lost in larger corporate structures.

“We have run Doosan mini-excavators in the past and know they are cracking machines that are ideal for the hire business,” says Gerry Fehily, Divisional Plant Manager at Smiths. “We have been using 5.5 tonne machines recently, but we have returned to the 6 tonne DX62R-3 excavator as it provides better power and strength for heavier tasks such as lifting pallets of materials and kerb stones around sites.”

“At Smiths, we are committed to ensuring our customers are delighted with our work, impressed by our people and certain to use us again,” says Company Director, Paul Smith. “Many of our people have been with the company for a long time. It is their experience and knowledge which allows us to meet our customers’ requirements.

Smiths is a family company, owned and run by the Smith family since the business began in 1982.

maximum digging depth of the DX27Z is 2935 mm, the dump height is 2690 mm and the maximum reach is 4690 mm. The DX27Z mini-excavator is equipped with optimal systems suitable for various applications from pipework to landscaping. The compactness of the machine allows operations within confined spaces as well as work in restricted areas around buildings.

As well as plant hire, a wide range of other services are available from Smiths, including skip hire, construction, demolition, waste management, transport, drain services, asbestos removal and laser levelling. “After 35 years of operations and having built one of Gloucestershire’s largest businesses, the team at Smiths continues to innovate, develop and plan for the future,” says Smith. “We are not complacent and aim to offer an expanding service to the construction industry. For example, we are rapidly gaining market share in the waste management and recycling sector and we are exploring the future of biomass energy.”

One of the stand-out features on the DX62R-3 is the dramatic increase in hydraulic performance, which has been boosted with an impressive 33% increase in maximum flow rate to 132 l/ min. The bucket digging force is now 4.4 tonne, 7% above the previous model and the arm digging force is 10% higher at 2.9 tonne. This is combined with a longer arm for a better overall working range. The traction force has also been increased by 5% to 5.6 tonne and travel speeds have been increased in both the low range (2.6 km/h) and the high range (4.7 km/h).

The Doosan DX27Z zero tail swing model is part of the Doosan range of mini-excavators covering the weight range from 1 to 8 tonne. Like all Doosan mini-excavators, the DX27Z offers optimum stability, ample space for the operator and easy serviceability, together with the ability to dig right up to the blade.

The DX62R-3 is powered by the Stage IIIA compliant 36.2 kW liquid-cooled Yanmar 4TNV94L diesel engine running at a maximum speed of 2200 rpm, providing abundant power and reliability for a machine of this size. Electronic injection together with automatic idle ensures optimum fuel efficiency at all times.

Powered by the Yanmar 3TNV82A-SDB diesel engine providing 15.8 kW of power at 2200 rpm, the DX27Z has an operating weight of 2790 kg when equipped with a cab and rubber tracks. The

Under the Hammer It was another record breaking three-day auction in Leeds this August for Euro Auctions, the UK’s leading auctioneers of industrial plant, construction machinery and agricultural equipment.

A final hammer total of £40,725,000 was achieved based on a total of 4,738 lots, making it the largest single used plant and equipment auction held anywhere in Europe in recent years. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the Leeds auction, which saw a number of records broken,” says Jonnie Keys, Operations Manager of Euro Auctions. “We are pleased to break the £40 million barrier, but equally we are pleased with the record number of first time registers and the first time buyers that attended the auction,” says Keys. “This can be attributed to the massive show of equipment available from around the world and in particular consignments

40

from some of the largest rental companies including Ardent, Charles Wilson, Lynch and A-Plant, as they continue their aggressive plant renewal programmes. Also pleasing to see was equipment being sold to all continents which demonstrates the recovery in the construction sector around the world and in particular the South American countries which have been slow for a while now.” A record number of 522 vendors from across the globe, including almost 50 first time consignors, entrusted Euro Auctions to maximise interest in their equipment through our sustained preauction marketing and achieve the best hammer prices. By

attracting and presenting desirable lots we also achieved an excellent turnout with over 2,200 bidders participating from 70 countries – again numbers that are record highs for this auction. Buyers from across the UK, Ireland and Europe again topped the tables but we saw significant added interest from the USA, the Middle East and Australasia with almost 1000 buyers coming from all continents across the world. Around 60% of all winning bids were placed by bidders actually attending the event and over 100 of the 160 plus first time registered bidders also placed their first winning bid. That said, we find that many buyers prefer a mix of onsite and online channels; with many coming along on dayone to inspect equipment, making preferred choices and then opting to purchase online, if they cannot attend all three days. With excavators being the largest single category of equipment in this auction, there were no fewer than 693 to choose from; probably the largest number of excavators ever assembled for sale in the world. Included in this were almost 300 mini excavators, 110 6+ tonne, 117 10+ tonne and almost 150 20+ tonne excavators. Many were high specification, low hours, late registration models. Also included in this sale were a good choice of over 250 telehandlers, around 50 of each backhoes, dozers, forklifts, skid-steer loaders and articulated dump trucks, plus over 100 wheeled loaders and wheeled excavators – so something for everybody. Top hammer total went to a 2014 CAT D6T selling for £187,000.

249 lots of commercial vehicles and trailers, plus an array of scissor lifts, cherry pickers and a handful of cranes. There was also crushing and screening equipment and all manner of miscellaneous small plant, including generators, over 180 compressors and various other related plant and equipment. “The currently depressed Pound against the Euro and Dollar has certainly made the UK a rich and attractive shopping location for many looking to acquire quality equipment,” says Keys. “This, coupled with the massive choice of quality equipment on offer led to it being a hugely successful sale. “Euro Auctions is now a truly international player and we are seeing strong interest in all our auctions around the globe. We have two new locations, Dubai and Hong Kong, both holding their first sales in September, further expanding our reach and appeal.. Our online presence is also attracting significant interest and traffic to our website during the three-day sale was up over 25% on the previous auction with an almost 40% increase in new users to the site. Compared to the same period last year traffic was up over 30%.”

Hadley’s Hydradig Hadley Recycling and Waste Management seeks to divert as much waste from landfill and into recycling and renewable energy as possible.

Hadley Recycling and Waste Management seeks to divert as much waste from landfill and into recycling and renewable energy as possible. At its busy transfer station, located just outside Theale in Berkshire, the company processes each week approximately 1000 tonnes of mixed waste including mixed construction and demolition waste, wood, plasterboard and green waste. The first machine to touch it is a brand new JCB Hydradig 110W, which plays a vital role in keeping the throughput flowing at the busy site.

reversing cameras, which gives the operator perfect rear visibility when reversing.” Lock is also impressed that the Wastemaster spec Hydradig is fitted with a reversing fan. “I struggled to get any other manufacturer to spec one on this size of machine.” The skip hire and waste management company sorts waste within its 2700 square metre purpose built transfer station, which opened in March 2017. Servicing Reading and the surrounding areas, the site can accept all industrial and commercial waste, including hardcore, metal, wood, paper and cardboard, soil and plastics.

“The JCB Hydradig fits our front-end pre-sort process perfectly,” says Paul Lock, Operations Director at Hadley – one of the first customers for the Wastemaster-spec Hydradig. “It has a small footprint but covers a big operational area and is very productive. Safety was a predominant reason the purchase with the driver able to see all four corners of the machine from the operator seat because the engine is beneath the cab. Our machine is fitted with

“Skip sales are up 30% and bigger bins by 53% – demand is going crazy,” says Lock. The waste brought onto the site in these skips and bins gets tipped in the building for sorting and the Hydradig performs the pre-sort. The task was previously

among a waste pile, such as an individual plastic bottle, to delicately ‘pinch it’ with the swivel grab in order to pick it up and remove it from the pile. In the next movement the same tool can grab a bucket-load of waste free of contamination.” This means the Hydradig can not only carry out the heavy shifting that only a machine can perform, but it can also do the job of manual pickers.

“It was a bit small and didn’t suit the operation,” says Lock of the mini-digger. “We were flogging it to death and because it didn’t have a reversing fan, it was constantly overheating. We also needed something that was kinder than a tracked machine, to our concrete surface. “We turned to Greenshields JCB, who ran through what the Hydradig could do. It fitted the bill perfectly so we ordered one in May of this year. The 11.5 t Hydradig has a 4-metre turning circle and can lift 1000 kg at maximum reach. “It is easy to use, dexterous and quick. The driver was soon up to speed, making the pre-sort operation look easy. “The operator loves it because it’s very comfortable and quiet.”

The Hydradig’s reversing fan on its radiator gives a big productivity and reliability advantage in an environment such as Hadley’s waste transfer site, according to Lock. “Our site can get very dusty and with our previous machine we had to ‘blow out’ the radiator several times a day, which made it very hot,” says Lock. “With the Hydradig, the operator simply presses a button to reverse the fan, which then automatically blows out dust from the radiator to maintain operations and keep the machine in good condition.”

We also use it to fill in on other jobs in addition to sorting such as stripping, feeding a shredder, tidying up any of the bins around the site and even to stack loads flat on pallets.

“When working in this industry it’s important to have equipment which is safe, strong and suited to the environment which is something that JCB does very well. Its support has been second to none – right from initial enquiry through to the purchase of the machine, they’ve listened to everything I have to say and been very helpful.”

” Equipped with a swivelling selector grab for sorting waste, the Hydradig proves to be an incredibly dexterous and flexible tool. This allows the operator, spotting a piece of contamination

Bobcat Looks East Alfatech, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for Ukraine, based in Dnipro City, has delivered 20 new Bobcat S770 skid-steer loaders for use in local authority work throughout the Dnepropetrovsk Region of East Ukraine. From snow removal to street cleaning and much more, the brand new fleet of 20 Bobcat S770 skidsteer loaders will be based at six locations around Dnipro City to carry out this work. Many of the public organisations in the region already use mini-loaders as part of their machine fleets, but the new Bobcat compact loaders have been greeted as a very welcome addition. Bobcat compact loaders and excavators are excellent tool carriers that can be used to mow grass, extract tree stumps, clear ice and snow and many other applications. Their compact size and manoeuvrability means that they can replace almost all manual labour. A wide range of optional attachments allows each loader or excavator to be converted into a different type of machine, depending on the weather conditions

and the nature of the work to be carried out for the local community. “Changing attachments only takes a few minutes,” Novomoskovsk City Council Public Utilities and Major Construction Manager, Stanislav Sigida. “And it takes only one person − a loader operator − to do it. This equipment is greatly needed by municipalities and is almost irreplaceable for this type of work in the community.” “This new special equipment can significantly speed up and simplify operations for improvements at the municipal level,” says Sigida. “With regard to attachments, municipal work is not that complicated − naturally, buckets are the most common attachment, with, for example, angle brooms and snow ploughs more in use in the winter.” Alfatech has been the Bobcat dealer in Ukraine for over 10 years. The company is one of the biggest players in Ukraine’s construction equipment market, representing several brands, including Bobcat. “The public sector market is highly competitive, but this is an established Bobcat customer, which really appreciates the Bobcat brand of machines and we ensure they receive the quality of service they expect!” says Alexey Dulepov, Sales Director of Alfatech.

VOLVO PUTS HS2 ON TRACK Britain’s new high-speed rail project, HS2 is on track to provide a swift and low-carbon alternative mode of transport from London to the Midlands and the North of England. Across Europe, a number of public and private infrastructure projects are pushing the construction industry to take carbon emissions and sustainability more seriously. In many ways, the UK’s latest mega project – the creation of a £56bn high-speed railway connecting eight English cities – is the most ambitious yet. Called High Speed 2 (HS2), it will be the second high-speed rail line in Britain after HS1, which connects London to the Channel Tunnel.

already underway, and main construction works are expected to start in 2019. Phase 2 is split into subphases: Phase 2a provides a connection between the West Midlands and Crewe by 2027. Phase 2b links to Manchester and Leeds and is set to be operational by 2033. The scale of construction for Phase 1 alone is staggering: 128 million tonnes of excavated material, 90% of which will be reused; 46km of tunnels; 145 over bridge structures and 152 under bridge structures. The Volvo Group is readying itself to respond to the challenge. Such an undertaking will demand tough and highly-productive machines and versatile on-highway and off-highway trucks to transport material.

High Speed 2 Ltd is the organization responsible for developing and promoting the new railway. The line has a “Y” shaped route and will be built in two phases. Phase 1 consists of a 225 km (140 mi) line connecting London to Birmingham and is scheduled to open in 2026. Preparatory works are

project both internally and externally. HS2 Ltd has been publicly reporting its performance and will continue throughout the duration of the project. The third enabler is innovation, a key driver for carbon reduction. The organisation is ensuring that it provides the mechanisms that allow the supply chain to respond and challenge standards that might create barriers for delivering lower carbon innovative solutions.

“We have been working hard to understand the unique challenges HS2 brings to the supply chain,” says Martyn Brawn, infrastructure projects manager at SMT GB. “It’s not just about productivity and efficiency. Safety and wellbeing are key areas in focus and perhaps most significantly of all, the environmental impact that building HS2 will have along the route and surrounding areas.”

Procurement is the fourth enabler, with the project’s policy requiring suppliers to exhibit carbon reduction in their activities, as well as meet performance targets through the development.

As the largest infrastructure project in Europe, HS2 Ltd places climate change as a central focus of its strategy. The organisation has set the objective to minimise its carbon footprint. The project has sustainability at the heart of its design and implementation. It is one of the first projects to integrate climate change into HS2 Ltd’s environmental assessment, as explained by Mark Fenton, climate change specialist (carbon) at HS2 Ltd during the Construction Climate Challenge (CCC) seminar at the Bauma 2016 event in Germany.

“All suppliers, big and small, need to respect the local environment and communities where their products operate,” says Brawn. “This not only means minimising CO2 emissions with the most advanced machines available but also ensuring that operators are trained to the highest standards of efficiency. Innovations and new methods of working are helping to reduce the environmental impact. Alternative fuels are a good example where the supply chain can collaborate to the overall benefit of the Project and the communities affected.”

HS2 Ltd is using four ‘key enablers’ that provide the imperative for the supply chain to deliver lower carbon solutions.

As part of the supply chain – and sponsor of the CCC – Volvo is likewise demonstrating leadership and collaborative efforts to meet HS2’s targets. The CCC is a global initiative to drive sustainability, specifically in the construction industry value chain. In the UK, this has included hosting supply chain events to promote PAS2080 (a Publicly Available Specification). This is the world’s first standard for managing infrastructure carbon, offering practical guidance for cutting costs, improving efficiency and slowing climate change.

The first enabler is leadership and governance, with carbon considerations integrated into all decisionmaking processes. HS2 Ltd aims to provide the kind of leadership and direction to inspire the supply chain to collaborate and deliver lower carbon solutions to minimise the carbon footprint. Awareness of carbon emissions will be raised through the culture and communications of the

Shorts own and operate two Materials Recycling Facilities (MRF) and are passionate about diverting waste from landfill. “Buying machinery is something that is integral part of our business. We need the right tools to do our jobs and buying the right machinery for our business is something we take very seriously. We use machinery for all aspects of our business operations in particularly demolition, agricultural services, plant hire and at our MRF sites”, said Gary Short, Managing Director. “In recent months, we started looking to purchase a new compact screener. We have long standing business relationship with Paul Donnelly from RK6 who suggested we have a demonstration of the Anaconda DF410 scalping screen. We decided that the DF410 would be a perfect machine to add to our fleet as the machine is very

compact, yet well-built and with a highly efficient screenbox we are able to carry out very effective screening on projects that larger equipment cannot get into.” The Anaconda DF410 is one of the best compact scalping screeners in its range and is the most popular machines that Anaconda Equipment currently manufacture. Weighing in at just 15.6 tonnes, it leads the way in aggressive screening of any machine of its size on the market today. Variable speed belts and a high energy screen box it’s the largest in its class. All belts fold hydraulically and the machine has a fixed screen angle of 15 degrees. There are the options of either JCB or Deutz engines and can come equipped with either Bofar Bars, Finger Screens, Punch Plate or Wire Mesh. A radio remote control is also available. The machine can also be containerised for easy shipping requirements.

Lighting the Way A powerful, anti-glare next generation lamp head from the innovative design team at Morris Site Machinery has been hailed as a game changer for the industry.

The robust and versatile Halo is a revolutionary, virtually indestructible lamp head which fits on the company’s celebrated SMC TL90 lighting towers. It delivers 360 degrees 1200W diffused light from four 300W LED quadrants.

“We are excited and proud of this new product which will take the onsite lighting market to new levels,” says Richard Denholm, Sales Director at Morris Site Machinery. “It will deliver game-changing benefits and improved performance.

It has been developed and manufactured to provide an even, impressive spread of light with an anti-glare diffuser which can operate in extreme conditions. Suitable for a range of uses, it will prove its worth in particular for roadsides and motorways, airports, quarries, car parks or trackside lighting.

“The Halo is like nothing seen before. It represents the future of anti-glare lighting and promises to improve working conditions for users, which is so important to the industry.

The innovative design has four segments independently mounted onto a steel frame with each quadrant comprising three 100W high power LED modules. The quadrant diffuser is constructed from a tough high performance LLDPE material, similar to that used in highway products like road safety cones, and creates a bright, anti-glare, even spread of light. The SMC Halo light will be unveiled at this month’s Showman’s Show (18 and 19 October) where its first public demonstration is expected to generate much interest.

58

“We’re looking forward to demonstrating what makes it so special and are inviting people to come to our stand at the Showman’s Show to see it in action for themselves.” The IP65 rated Halo has been designed for simple deployment and easy setup with no lamp adjustment necessary. It has an improved light spread and above average LUX levels compared to a conventional LED or metal halide lamp. It means fewer towers are required, boosting its green credentials. The Halo fits onto the latest SMC TL90 towers and can also be retro fitted to used stock.

OnGrade Goes Underground OnGrade has signed a new contract to supply its Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) proximity warning systems, SiteZone EasyFit and SiteZone iNstant, on plant and delivery vehicles used on London Underground’s Four Lines Modernisation Programme. The SiteZone system will be used on construction plant involved in the re-building of signalling and control system infrastructure – this includes excavators and telehandlers.

The SiteZone systems prevent collisions between pedestrians and vehicles, which is a significant safety hazard on busy construction sites. The pedestrian and vehicle transmitters communicate with each other, providing a full 360-degree detection zone and the ability to see around corners. The on-board receiver detects the location of tag-wearing personnel and alerts the driver and pedestrian to each other’s presence.

London Underground is one of the first UK companies to specify the use of SiteZone iNstant, the UK’s first wireless RFID proximity warning system. It is specifically aimed at all delivery vehicles entering London Underground construction sites on the Four Lines Modernisation Programme.

SiteZone ‘EasyFit’ allows for straightforward installation of the proximity warning alarm system

positive intervention while recording all data to help manage health and safety, both for individuals and the entire site. By using SiteZone’s data capture features, London Underground will monitor any workers’ behavioural changes towards safety awareness. When the OnGrade telematics system, Oversite is introduced to the project, data can be viewed live and reports can be generated daily across the 32 sites involved.

SiteZone iNstant goes one step further by being completely wireless, allowing for immediate use and protection without the need for a hard-wired installation. It is ideal for application on delivery vehicles coming into a busy depot or construction site where the danger of reversing into a pedestrian is increased.

“SiteZone continues to make a positive impact on improving site safety,” says Gary Escott, Director of OnGrade. “We have every confidence in the SiteZone system and safety awareness culture it creates wherever it is used. We are so pleased that London Underground has approached us so that they too can benefit from SiteZone on their project.”

SiteZone has another key feature, it logs data to enable targeted training and continual improvement in site safety. By logging data of breaches into vehicle safety zones, SiteZone becomes a valuable management tool as well as an alarm system. It enables
