DIGGERS & DOZERS

Wracked with Indecision Despite the thorough drenching that we and the other attendees of the PlantworX 2017 exhibition received, I left the Bruntingthorpe show ground feeling excited; inspired; optimistic. And yet, almost everything that has happened – politically and financially - since has largely undermined that feeling; turned optimism into studied caution; has switched my half full glass for a half empty one. Of course, anyone that has been around construction for long enough knows that this business of ours moves in cycles. Downturns are a bit like London buses – Don’t worry if you missed the last one, there’ll be another along in a minute. This time it feels different. For one thing, no-one has yet uttered the dread word recession, possibly for fear of being premature or – worse – of triggering an industry meltdown. For another, there are pockets of positivity such as HS2. But the stats speak for themselves. According to market intelligence provider The Builders’ Conference, the UK construction industry has clocked up around 600 new major contract awards with a combined value of around £4 billion each month pretty much since the last recession petered out. In July 2017, that figure had fallen to under £2.5 billion. And, at the time of writing, August looks set to fair no better. So what to do? We could, of course, batten down the hatches in the hope that any such downturn might not see us. We could bury our heads in the sand and pretend that all in the garden is rosy. Or we can come out fighting. And Diggers and Dozers has chosen the latter. We have invested in new editorial and advertising staff to make this magazine and the Diggers and Dozers website bigger and better than ever before. We have invested in new camera and audio equipment to make our YouTube channel even better. And we have just published our first book to bring even more value to our readers and subscribers. So Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un can carry on with their playground spat. Theresa May can continue to preside over a faux government. And our European neighbours can plot their revenge to punish the UK for having the temerity to leave the EU party. Here at Diggers and Dozers, it’s all guns blazing; and we’ll continue to fire on all cylinders until someone tells us otherwise.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

JCB Brought to Book Diggers and Dozers publishes its firstever book. Diggers and Dozers is proud to announce that it has published its first-ever book. Called “Renaissance: Why JCB is the Apple of the Digger World” – the new book explores the striking similarity in the approach to innovation and product development of the two companies; innovation that brought us the iPhone and iPad and the Hydradig and the Teleskid. The book is written by Diggers and Dozers’ editor Mark Anthony who has been a regular visitor to the JCB World Headquarters for almost 30 years. “Apple did not invent the smartphone or the tablet computer. But it took those ideas and made them better; made them desirable,” Anthony says. “Having charted the development and launch of machines like the Hydradig, the Teleskid and the Hi Viz dumper, I was struck by JCB’s seemingly unerring knack for

taking a proven machine type and turning that design on its head to create something new and aspirational.” Although the traditional and formal British values of JCB are seemingly at odds with the less formal American style that permeates through Apple, Anthony says he was struck by the similarities in the approach of both companies. “I had the idea for this book pretty much immediately after seeing the Hydradig for the first time. Here was an example of JCB taking a largely unloved and underappreciated machine – the wheeled excavator – and making it cool,” Anthony continues. “What was most surprising was that JCB were equally- though privately - aware of the comparisons.” Anthony explains that – ahead of the writing of the book – he visited the JCB World Headquarters to interview the company’s Chief Innovation and Growth Officer, Tim Burnhope. “I had already started work on the book and even had a front cover design photo on my iPhone,” Anthony recalls. “During our interview, Burnhope repeatedly quoted Apple’s Steve Jobs. I showed him the concept cover photo of a JCB wheel loader taking a bite out of the Apple logo (which we eventually used on the back of the book) and he was astounded.”

5

And these parallels are more than mere coincidence. During the final stages of research for the book, it transpired that Burnhope had attended Newcastle Polytechnic, the school that spawned Apple’s designerin-chief Jony Ive. “The more I dug, the more the similarities between JCB and Apple emerged,” Anthony continues. According to Anthony, the new book is the culmination of a near-30-year relationship with the Rocester-based company. “JCB has been an integral part of my professional life for almost three decades. I even travelled to my wedding reception in a JCB 3CX!” he concludes. “I have visited the factory so many times that my car pretty much knows the way, although that didn’t prevent me having a car accident on the way to the factory during the research for this book. As an unbiased journalist with an international readership, I must remain objective. But there’s a little bit of me that really enjoys seeing a British company continuing to put the Great in Great Britain.”

OMG! Hyundais for ODG

DIGGERS & DOZERS

A host of new Hyundai excavators are helping pave the way for new homes in London with Enfield-based firm ODG Plant. ODG Plant is the plant-hire arm of multidiscipline construction company Galldris Construction, which is working on the massive redevelopment project, centred around Silvertown on the north bank of the River Thames in East London. Plans are underway to rejuvenate this once industrial land that overlooks the Thames Barrier. Galldris Construction has taken a slice of the work that aims to create a riverside community near Canary Wharf and London City Airport. ODG Plant is a longstanding Molson customer – recently updating its fleet with the introduction of several new Hyundai excavators, in a deal brokered by Molson area sales manager Stuart Butler. The company has taken five Hyundai HX145LCR and five HX220L crawlers, each fully compliant with the latest and future emission requirements as it looks to revamp its existing fleet of machines. Initially the firm was reluctant to take the machines where AdBlue was a requirement but after reassurance from Butler over the simplicity of its use the ODG team were happy to go with the latest Stage-4 compliant HX series of excavators. “We like to keep things simple and adding AdBlue is just another thing for our operators to remember.” says Craig Brown, manager at ODG Plant Hire. “… safety and limiting our negative impact on the environment is very important to us as a company and Molson reassured us that the adding of AdBlue really is a very straightforward process.” One of the reasons the ODG team took the HX145LCR excavators is because of the zero-tail swing they offer.

height is also 9.14m while minimum ground clearance is 480mm.

“The ODG team like the zero tail-swing of the HX145LCR’s. They are compact, powerful excavators. Perfect for the work that Galldris Construction has lined up for them,” says Butler.

“We have a mix of machines,” says Brown. “It’s because of Molson that we keep going back to Hyundai. The amount of effort the Molson team put in to make the deal work is remarkable. They know what they are talking about, they understand the machines. They help make life easy for us which in turn helps us in our work.”

With an operational weight of 15.16tonnes the HX145LCR is powered by a Perkins 1204F direct injection Tier 4 air cooled engine which delivers a maximum torque of 54Kgf.m at 1400rpm. They have a height of 3.25m, are 2.5m wide with a tail swing radius of 1.5m. They boast a maximum dig reach with a 1.9m arm of 7.73m, a dig depth of 4.89m and a maximum dig height of 8.84m. Minimum ground clearance is 440mm.

With its extensive plant fleet, ODG plant are looking to the future with a potential move from being an in-house hirer to hiring out to other contractors. “We have a large fleet that we could hire out to other contractors. We have hundreds of machines. Everything from 23tonne down to 1.5tonne excavators as well as rollers, dumpers and most other pieces of equipment. We have been solely focussed on hiring to Galldris Construction and, although that will remain key, we may be looking at the opportunity to start hiring some of our equipment out to the wider market.”

The HX220L crawler is one of the larger machines on the ODG Plant fleet. With an operating weight of 22.1tonnes it is powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 turbo charged Tier 4 air cooled diesel engine that delivers a maximum torque of 85/7Kgf.m at 1500rpm. It’s 3.2m high with and overall length of 9.53m and 2.99m wide and has a tail swing radius of 2.84m. With the 2m arm its maximum dig reach measures 9.14m with a dig depth of 5.82m. Maximum dig

Liebherr Launches Loader Liebherr is expanding its series of Generation 6 crawler loaders with the addition of the new LR 626 Litronic crawler loader, which is the successor to the LR 624 crawler loader. It was developed and constructed at Liebherr’s Telfs plant and has an operating weight of between 16,130 and 18,600 kg. The standard bucket has a capacity of 1.8 m³ and its fourcylinder diesel engine produces an output of 105 kW / 143 HP and complies with Tier 4f emission standards. Liebherr has developed its SCR technology to use an injection of AdBlue® and a diesel oxidation catalyst. A diesel particulate filter is not required. As a result, the engine operates in a temperature range of maximum efficiency. The constant engine speed, combined with common rail fuel injection, ensures optimised cylinder charging and guarantees lower fuel consumption. The new LR 626 crawler loader has electronic drive control with integrated ECO function. The selectable ECO mode allows the driver to lower fuel consumption by reducing the engine speed at the push of a button and still maintain high power. In this way, the ECO control ensures more efficient operation with light to moderately heavy use. Another innovation in all Liebherr Generation 6 crawlers is the proactive power adjustment. This involves the constant monitoring of the engine and all other machine parameters. When required, such as the deflection of the joystick, the engine power is automatically temporarily increased according to the current requirements.

10

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The driving range preselection integrated in the driving joystick means that three different driving speed ranges can be freely programmed. This enables the LR 626 to be optimally adapted to diverse operational requirements.

The hydrostatic travel drive’s compact components allow for a particularly low centre of gravity. Due to the low engine oil sump on Liebherr’s diesel engine, this is suitable for gradients of up to 45° enabling Liebherr crawler loaders to drive on challenging steep slopes safely and efficiently. The LR 624’s design, characterised by flowing lines and soft edges, immediately stakes its claim to being at the forefront of innovation in this machine category. The modern overall appearance is carried through into the operator’s cab. The windscreen, made from a single piece of safety glass, follows the driver’s line of vision across the entire arc of the loading bucket and allows for an unobstructed view of the working area and operating equipment. The new machine design also provides perfect panoramic views.

When the running gear was developed in a robust box-type design, special attention was paid to the vibration behaviour and smooth running of the LR 626. This ensures that the bucket’s high fill level can be maintained when transporting material and that the machine is suitable for levelling. The running gear has pendulum suspension and anti-vibration mounting. This compensates for uneven ground and particularly good ground contact can be achieved which, in turn, increases the climbing power and stability on uneven terrain.

The cab with generous dimensions, numerous storage areas, a refrigerated storage compartment and an air conditioning system fitted as standard, rounds off the driving comfort of this new crawler loader. All Generation 6 crawlers have the touch screen display for Liebherr earthmoving machines. This enables the clear and intuitive setting of key operating parameters.

The ‘turn with opposite chains’ function is automatically implemented by the LR 626 if a sufficiently tight turn has to be made. As a result, the machine achieves outstanding manoeuvrability. This allows the machine to achieve maximum performance, even when cornering, when the bucket is full and when driving over unfavourable ground conditions.

screens and “poly-carb windows for added protection when mulching. The pressure gauge mounted to the mulcher frame allows the operator to easily monitor mulcher performance and the hydraulically adjustable push guard and hydraulically operated front hood provide an added measure of safety. An air suspension seat (with seat-mounted controls) reduces operator fatigue and promotes high production.

The width of the HM518 mulcher, featuring an 1822 mm-wide drum, is matched to the operating width of the D3K2 for optimum efficiency and productivity. Finished debris size depends on the type of material being processed and the time allowed for multiple passes.

Caterpillar markets the D3K2 mulcher as a complete model configuration, and the HM518 mulcher cannot be retrofitted to standard D3K2 dozer models. This mulching machine also provides an added choice in combination with the Cat 299D XHP compact track loader.

Operator safety and comfort are priorities in the design of the D3K2 mulcher. The pressurized cab, with 360-degree visibility, is fitted with

Tracking Down new Yanmar Yanmar has updated one of its most popular models, the SV26 excavator in order to make it more productive and user friendly.

The main change is seen in the tracks. As well as having a new design and more grip, they have increased in width from 250mm to 300mm increasing manoeuvrability.

a more impressive machine,” says One customer who runs a number of SV26’s. “Our operators have noticed how work times are decreasing already. Well done Yanmar.”

With 15% less ground pressure, wear will reduce as well as the potential for damages to the ground. The blade has also been widened to accommodate the wider tracks, as well as full ram guard protection on the bucket, dipper and arm cylinders.

Finally SV26 users will now find a reduction in cycle times and an upgrade in comfort due to automatic second speed now being fitted as standard. This means the speed is automatically determined by the required traction effort. Although users can still lock the machine in first speed via the switch on the blade lever.

Bright Sparkes With its firm focus on supplying customers with the most capable plant machinery, recognised earthmoving contractor Kelston Sparkes Group has announced its recent fleet enhancement of four additional Bell Equipment B50D Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs), bringing the total number of this model to ten.

Established in Bristol in 1952, Kelston Sparkes has grown to operate one of the largest fleets of ADTs in the UK, and has continually strived to increase the capabilities of its fleet, with the addition of larger excavators, crushers, screens, bulldozers and rollers. The company now operates a taskforce of over 200 plant and earthmoving vehicles, as part of its ever evolving and expanding fleet. In 2016, the firm decided to bring a model of ADT on board with a greater load volume, to further meet the needs of its clients. It invested in four Bell B50Ds, which were originally tasked with quarry-based load and haul. These machines demonstrated their versatility and coped well with the long-haul work, proving themselves to have the capacity and fuel efficiency Kelston Sparkes’ clients were looking for.

“We required articulated dump trucks for their versatility, but we also needed a much larger load capacity than the current 40-ton dump trucks we operate, due to the longhaul distances coupled with the knowledge that our customers are very fuel focused,” says Director Rob Stark. “We found that Bell’s B50D model could meet both those requirements, delivering a 2:1 heaped capacity of 28 m3, and a rated payload of 45 400 kg; figures that could provide a real payoff for the customer.”

“Our training school launched over 15 years ago, and since then has successfully worked to attract younger drivers to the construction industry, giving them the abilities and confidence they need to achieve a successful career in plant machine operations,” says Stark. “We’ve helped enable operatives to achieve Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) qualifications, and extend their reach by teaching them how to achieve the best performance from a wide range of earthmoving machines.”

“The B50Ds have been useful machines, with an ideal specification for customers who need a hard-working ADT that offers that extra capacity, without hitting hard on the fuel consumption.” says Stark.

By bringing the total of Bell B50Ds within Kelston Sparkes’ fleet to 10, and training operatives to use the equipment to its best advantage, Stark believes his clients are better equipped with more machines available to meet demand and perform to capacity.

Keen to develop the skill sets and expertise of younger generations of machine operatives, the company launched its own training school back in 2002, a venture which has since grown from strength-to-strength.

“We feel that expanding our fleet with these latest Bell B50Ds furthers the services we can provide our clients and we’ve every confidence that the new models will succeed in delivering the results they need.”

The new Doosan equipment was purchased from local Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer, Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd of Bridgwater in Somerset. With depots in Bridgwater and Camelford in Cornwall, Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd is the authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer for the whole of South West England, covering the counties of Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Devon, Cornwall, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and Gloucestershire.

“As part of the latest deal, Mark Payne, Sales Director at Kellands, was able to arrange a very good package including a three year warranty and a three year service contract, giving us complete peace of mind. Using his knowledge of the industry, Mark has also ensured the machines have been set up with the correct specifications for our applications.” Recycling is an essential part of the business at McCarthy Marland. The company recycles around 95% of waste materials that come into St Philips using state-of-the-art waste segregation technology, which enables it to recover as much recyclable material as possible so that it can go on to be reprocessed and reused.

Formed in 2001, McCarthy Marland was created to fill a gap in the local market for removal of both domestic and commercial waste and the company delivers and collects hundreds of skips of different sizes every day throughout the South West. Over the last 16 years, the company has grown rapidly, taking on extra personnel and increasing its fleet of lorries and skips on a regular basis to satisfy demand.

“We provide our customers with skips or rollon roll-off containers to be filled with waste materials,” says McDonagh. “…more and more of our customers are choosing to separate the waste themselves on site, which makes it easier to handle the recyclable materials when they come to us, so we can recover materials such as wood, soil, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, cardboard, plasterboard and hardcore.”

“We have been purchasing Doosan machines for over 10 years now and they have always performed well in our busy sorting and loading operations in Bristol and the new Doosan equipment has impressed our operators,” says Kevin McDonagh, Operations Manager at McCarthy Marland.

Flannery Performs Bypass with Finning

Finning UK & Ireland supports the construction of the Norwich Bypass, one of the UK’s largest road infrastructure projects, with a vast range of Cat machines and advanced Caterpillar Production Management (CPM).

Known as the Northern Distributor Road, the project is being managed by primary contractor Balfour Beatty, with P. Flannery Plant Hire chosen as the main earthworks contractor. “We have worked with Balfour Beatty on numerous projects over the years, but the significance of the Norwich Bypass is the collaborative approach we have taken with sharing data and information,” says Flannery’s Operations Manager, Niall Hester. “We worked alongside Finning to show the team at Balfour Beatty just how we can monitor performance on site. Through VisionLink, we’re able to provide data on payload, fuel burn and overall performance of each core machine on site,” says Hester.

When Flannery were awarded the project, they purchased a wide range of new Caterpillar machines through Finning, ranging from five to 50 tonne excavators and the latest ADT’s, including the Cat 730C Ejector Truck which is fitted with CPM.

This information can be used by Balfour Beatty to provide the best possible carbon footprint on site as well as being able to see the impact of the fleet. CPM tracks and measures data such as tonnes per load, tonnes per cycle, distance travelled per day, and how many litres of fuel a machine burns per hour which gives the project a daily overview of progression.

The Cat 730C ejector unit creates a safer working environment by displaying payload weight and status including external lights which automatically signal when target payload has been achieved.

“From a performance perspective, we have also witnessed a dramatic increase in cycle times, not to mention the reduction in the use of more-expensiveto-run dozers,” says Hester.

The payload on the machine is shown on the in-cab monitor which enables operators to ensure the truck is not under or over loaded, which in turn optimises fuel burn per tonne on each cycle meaning the productivity of the machines are more efficient.

“Each day we are learning more about the performance of equipment and this information is being shared with Balfour Beatty, so we can all see the benefits of technology driven project management.”

Briggs Cuts JCB Scissor Deal Briggs Equipment – one of the UK’s largest fork lift truck and materials handling providers – has added 10 JCB scissor lifts to its rapidly growing access platform fleet.

The deal, one of the first for the recently launched JCB Access equipment division, includes 5.8m platform height S1930E electric scissors, 8.1m S2632E platforms, the higher lift capacity S2646E model and S3246E scissors, which combine a 10m lift height with a 320kg platform capacity. The company has invested more than £9.5m in its expanding short term hire fleet this year and will be doubling the number of access platforms available, from 100 to 200 machines throughout 2017. JCB has been developing and engineering a line-up of powered access machines in secret for the past two years. By the end of 2017 the newlylaunched JCB Access business will be offering a total of 27 new platforms. “From building contractors and heating engineers to commercial window cleaners and security installers, more and more businesses are engaged in day to day tasks that involve working at height,” says Briggs Equipment’s National Rental Manager, Allan Parsons. “JCB has a deserved reputation for wellengineered products that are built to cope with the toughest challenges, so we had no hesitation in adding its new electric scissor lifts to our equipment fleet.”

37

Cannock-based Briggs Equipment has been a long-standing customer of local dealer Gunn JCB and the company currently runs more than 80 JCB machines on its fleet. This includes industrial Teletruk forklifts, rough terrain fork lifts, Loadall telescopic handlers and now aerial work platforms. These machines are available on a national basis through Briggs’ network of seven depots. JCB’s move into the powered access market is designed to grab a slice of a market where 130,000 units a year are sold – generating an annual revenue of $8 billion. Powered access platforms are a common sight around the world where temporary access is needed for people to work at height, particularly on construction sites. The new JCB Access products – designed in-house to meet the needs of rental companies and contractors worldwide – will initially be offered in the UK, France, Germany and North America. By the end of 2017 JCB’s range of access platforms will include nine electric and three diesel scissor lifts from which can lift to 45 feet, five articulating booms which can go to a height of 81 feet and 10 diesel telescopic booms which can go to 136 feet.

Hanson Feels XPower Launched at bauma 2016, the XPower range of loaders employs Liebherr’s version of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to provide a fuel efficient and durable driveline alternative to traditional mechanical driveline systems. The system combines a split driveline that is both mechanical and hydrostatic. The hydrostatic drive is most efficient in short loading cycles whilst the mechanical drive is used for long distance driving or climbing gradients. The transmission automatically manages the interaction between the two drive types and is adjustable and continually mixing the ratio of the two drives without interrupting traction. The hydrostatic portion of the drive is higher when starting the loader and during loading duties. The mechanical element is greater at higher travel speeds.

with a six-cylinder Liebherr engine, which delivers 354 HP at a maximum of 1800 RPM with maximum torque coming at a mere 1300 RPM. Unlike many designs of wheeled loaders, the Liebherr range does away with a large counterweight instead relying on the positioning of the engine to balance the machine. This has allowed Liebherr engineers to streamline the rear canopy and allows for simple and easy access to all major components. The large and hydraulically opening bonnet also doubles up as a sturdy working platform when accessing the engine compartment. The repositioning of the engine and lack of a large transmission has allowed the cooling pack to be moved to a location in front of the engine and away from potential sources of contamination.

The combination of CVT transmission and Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE) software allow for potential fuel savings of 30% over comparative models. The LPE software continuously monitors the engine, transmission and hydraulic system, as well as driver input, to ensure the loader is constantly running at optimal performance.

Access to the redesigned Liebherr cab is via an angled ladder underneath the nearside of the cab. The redesigned structure gives far greater forward vision thanks to the new windscreen which incorporates fully glazed lower corners. The adjustable steering column allows the operator to position the wheel to their exact liking and this, coupled with the fully adjustable seat and joystick pod, can accommodate whatever configuration suits the individual

The XPower range has also benefitted from the introduction of new Tier 4 Final emissions compliant engines with the L 586 being fitted

One of the UK’s largest producers of construction materials Hanson Aggregates has purchased the first two Liebherr L 586 XPower wheeled loaders in the country and has put them to work on the aggregate production side of its quarry. driver. Whilst the Hanson machines are equipped with a steering wheel, Liebherr also offers a proportional joystick steering option. “It is a lovely machine to drive and much more comfortable than any other machine I’ve driven,” says Richie Shawcross , regular operator of one of the L 586 XPower loaders. “The controls are smooth and there is plenty of power at all times. The touch screen allows me to do my daily fluid checks without having to lift the bonnet.”

“The new Liebherr’s have plenty of clearance over the skip,” says Aggregate Production Manager Phil Davies. The Liebherr’s ability to load the 65 tonne capacity quarry truck in six passes before turning its attention to loading a 44 tonne gross artic showed the versatility of the long arm configuration. Both machines carry identical capacity buckets of 5.5m3. One has been equipped with teeth for face loading while the second is a general purpose unit for re-handling of the finished product. In a bid to up productivity on the site, both machines have been supplied with the latest in digital weigh loader technology in the shape of RDS’ Loadmaster Alpha 50 system.

Liebherr’s full colour touch screen has been fitted to a sliding rail that allows the operator to position the unit wherever they want on the cab pillar. The screen shows all machine functions, gives an intuitive route for the operator to tailor the machine’s operation and relays the image from the bonnet-mounted rear-view camera.

Loading from a compacted stockpile of blasted material, the hydrostatic transmission on the L 586 XPower came into play distributing power equally to all four wheels, which have Michelin XLD tyres. With no wheel spin or bellowing engine sound, the loader eased into the pile and reversed out with a full bucket every time.

“The touch screen allows me to do my daily fluid checks without having to lift the bonnet,” says Shawcross. The two wheeled loaders have been specified with longer loader arms and give approximately 450 mm more reach and lift height over the standard versions. The higher lift arrangement has been chosen as the machines will occasionally need to load one of the site’s fleet of 65 tonne capacity dump trucks.

“We have seen an increase in performance and a marked decrease in the amount of fuel we use,” says Davies. “Both machines are now moving in excess of 1800 tonnes of material per shift and this means our product costs less per tonne to produce now, which can only be a good thing.

Doosan Adds ADT Features Doosan Bobcat EMEA has announced a wide array of new standard and optional features for the company’s articulated dump truck (ADT) range.

The first of the new standard features, applied to all ADTs manufactured after 1st January 2017 is an angle limitation system to prevent the truck body from tipping over when it is being loaded with materials. This is also available if requested by customers as a software update for all ‘-5’ machines produced before 2017.

safety and efficiency as the operator always knows the machine will be in a stable position. Another new standard feature of the ADT range is the engine auto shut down function. ADTs can spend between 30% and 60% of their time standing with the engine idling while they are waiting to be loaded with consequent losses in terms of fuel, warranty and service costs. In order to reduce these costs, Doosan has introduced the auto shut down function which can be switched on and off by the operator on the display. Using the system, the operator can set a time after which the engine will automatically shut down if the computer does not detect any activity in the machine. This function is incorporated in all new Doosan ADTs and is available upon customers’ requests as a software update for machines produced before 1st January 2017.

In the new angle limitation function, a tip limit point can be set to meet the requirements of the machine owner. This allows the body to tip in accordance with the slope of the ground as set by the system. Based on a study of the customer’s application, Doosan can provide recommended limits for the company’s trucks, but it is up to the owner to decide which limits they want to use. If the slope is over the limit, the angle limitation system ensures the body does not move. The function therefore offers increased

Load of Balls A fleet of JCB crawler and wheeled excavators is playing a ma jor role in a road construction project just metres from the factory where they were built.

Derbyshire-based earthmoving specialist, JC Balls & Sons, is working for a Carillion-Tarmac joint venture on the A50 Growth Corridor Project A, part of the National Infrastructure Plan, constructing a grade-separated junction on the A50 dual carriageway to the west of Uttoxeter.

“For digging corners on batters it’s a lot easier. The machine is really comfortable and with the Engcon I can get more work done before repositioning,” says JC Balls & Sons Operator, Jamie Chappell. This performance and productivity boost has been echoed by JC Balls & Sons’ Contracts Manager Dane Potts, who has had to revise some of the planned works on the project, to incorporate the machine’s increased productivity.

The company is operating a mixed fleet of equipment on the project, including three 22-tonne JCB JS220 crawler excavators, a 36-tonne JS370, a wheeled JS175W and a 57C-1 compact excavator. Other machinery includes a JCB 714 articulated site dumper and a JCB VM115 soil compactor.

“Around 90% of our machinery on the project is already equipped with GPS machine control and we have found that it can cut the time on site almost by half,” he says.

Bought specifically for the A50 project, one of the JS220 models has been equipped with an Engcon E226 tilt-rotator, complete with the Engcon Positioning System. This is being used in combination with a Trimble 3D machine control system, providing new levels of control and accuracy.

“Tricky construction details are made easy by a simple level adjustment on the GPS controller. The combination of GPS with the Engcon tilt rotator is working really well and I’ve certainly noticed a difference in productivity. We’ll definitely be having more tilt rotators on our machines.”

The project will provide improved access to a housing development and to new employment sites to the west of Uttoxeter. Six 47m long steel bridge beams were lifted into place across the A50 this month (July), resting on piers that have been constructed using 210,000 tonnes of pulverised fuel ash (PFA) from the nearby Rugeley Power Station. Around 30,000m3 of existing material has been stabilised with the addition of lime, to provide increased structural properties and to reduce the amount of soil that has had to be taken from the site. The project is expected to be completed by November 2018, when it will provide improved access and reduced congestion to this busy crosscountry trunk road.

Simulating Site Safety Chepstow Plant International have increased their focus on ADT safety and operator training to ensure that their quarry operatives are maintaining the best possible levels of safe working practice on site. Their Volvo Excavator Simulator training service is now also being offered to other contractors and quarry businesses.

“The ADT has become the vehicle of choice given its scope and capabilities - they’ve been used in a variety of applications over the years with a design that ensures the safety of the operator should anything go awry,” says John Corcoran, managing director of Chepstow. “We’ve analysed some of these by working alongside our quarry customers to find solutions, such as reviewing operating procedures to provide optimum terrain conditions for ADTs to work on, having trucks equipped with extra safety technology, supported by state-of-the-art operator training for ADT drivers.”

Having that many machines requires large numbers of highly skilled operators - all whom must be familiar with the latest equipment and capable of working in a safe, productive manner on site. The majority of the company’s work is in quarrying, so Chepstow routinely qualifies its operators to Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC) Plant Operator Competency Scheme levels. The company keeps an ADT Risk Register and changed its operating procedures. Every site where ADTs are going to be used is visited by Safety and Quality Manager, Steve Smith.

Among an extensive fleet of plant, in which the majority of excavating machines weigh in at 30-80 tonnes, Chepstow also operates a large number of articulated dump trucks. The company added 73 Volvo ADTs to their fleet in the past year alone.

“We thoroughly assess weather conditions, unstable or uneven ground levels, the plant being operated, pre-start daily inspections, tyres, haul roads, inclines and downhill haul sections, plus

loading and tipping areas, and reinspect again a few days after work has started. For us, safety always comes before production,” says Smith.

“The training and familiarisation programmes we have rolled out focus us primarily on the behavioural approach for operation and supervision of ADT operations in line with the technical improvements we have developed,” says Smith.

In addition, one of Chepstow’s client partners, Tarmac, recently worked alongside them to develop an inclinometer that allows for an even greater safety margin during ADT operations, providing improved preventative controls to stop the rear chassis of an ADT from turning over in the kind of extreme terrain conditions that quarrying, by its very nature, is susceptible to.

The company has also been operating a complex Oryx Volvo Excavator Simulator for the past two years, training excavator operators before allowing them in the cab of actual machines, and has over the last 8 months purchased a second simulator for training for ADT and wheeled loader development. This is with a view to developing top calibre operators, not only to perform with optimum competency, but to have an understanding of the true purpose and capability of the ADT through the increased awareness and specific training.

“...in severe conditions, the rear chassis of an ADT can roll over leaving the cab safely upright, safeguarding the operator, but we would much rather there was never a situation where it risks being done at all!” says Smith. “Now, if the body of a truck tilts more than 9 degrees either left or right, the system will automatically alert the operator and stop the tipping hydraulics. Likewise, if the body is down, the operator will be warned if the rear section of the chassis exceeds 12 degrees of roll angle during travel.”

The simulators provide a dual function - a unit has fold-down armrests that have Volvo wheeled loader controls in place, so it can be used for both loading shovels and articulated dumpers. It uses actual operating site data to deliver an incredibly

training on the simulator, Jason has now passed his MPQC assessment and graduated to operating a Volvo ADT at the quarry. “When I first got in, it was all new, but after just a few days I felt that I’d got my head around it, and it was a lot less worrying than getting straight into a truck,” says Rust.

Training exercises become increasingly difficult and longer in duration, teaching operators how to use engine and transmission braking and training them in vehicle manoeuvres, loading, hauling and production scenarios. The simulator even records how much fuel is being used, to allow drivers to see that their right foot has a direct effect on the running cost of the machine.

The simulators make life easier for trainee, and for trainer. There is a buddy seat in an ADT, unlike an excavator where the instructor has to stand clear of the machine while in radio contact with the trainee. “The beauty of a simulator is that if anything does go wrong, it’s simply a case of pressing restart, which cannot be done in a live site situation,” says National Training Manager, Martin Stephens. “It only takes around 5 – 7 days to get to a point where significant risk can be managed.”

Chepstow has been testing the ADT simulators at Tarmac’s Mountsorrel Quarry in Leicestershire. The first trainee to prove the effectiveness of the machine was Jason Rust, an experienced construction site operative but a machine novice. Having undergone

Snorkel Bags German Order Ahern Deutschland, the sales and service provider for Snorkel lifts in Germany and Austria, has delivered two compact rough terrain scissor lifts, plus three low level units to German rental company, HVS Hubarbeitsbühnen.

The order, which is comprised of a Snorkel S2770BE and a S3370BE compact bi-energy scissor lift, along with two Snorkel TM12 self-propelled mast lifts, and a Snorkel S3010E self-propelled mini scissor lift, was handed over by Roman Heindl, Area Manager for Southern Germany for Ahern Deutschland. Founded in 1996 by Mr. Friedel Sturhahn, HVS Hubarbeitsbühnen today operates a rental fleet of over 400 units, and employs 20 people. Due to the success of the business, HVS moved to new premises in Steinhagen in 2015 to accommodate the expansion of the fleet and the team. “We have worked with Roman Heindl for many years, and we are very impressed with the level of customer and

technical service that we are receiving from Ahern Deutschland,” says Friedel Sturhahn, Owner of HVS. “On this particular order, we received a rental order for three low level machines on the same day that we were collecting the bi-energy scissor lifts. These low level machines were already in stock in Ahern Deutschland’s facility, so we were able to add them to the order and take them with us on the same day.” “This is a major bonus for rental companies in the region.” “The Snorkel bi-energy scissor lifts offer an particularly attractive solution to rental companies as a single unit can be rented to customers requiring either electric or diesel power,” says Bernhard Kahn, General Manager at Ahern Deutschland. “They are also likely to be rented longer term, as a customer can use them on the rough terrain at the start of the project and then indoors as the building progresses. We are pleased that HVS were able to benefit from our ‘ready to rent’ stock machines, and thank Mr. Sturhahn and his team for trusting in Ahern Deutschland and Snorkel. We look forward to continuing to build our relationship with them.”

Volvo Passes ADT Milestone With half of all the articulated haulers ever made bearing the Volvo brand, the company has just passed another landmark – the production of its 75,000th hauler.

More than half a century after they invented the concept, Volvo Construction Equipment recently celebrated the production of the 75,000th articulated hauler. Having produced more than half of the articulated haulers ever made, a staggering 50,000 Volvo haulers are still in regular use around the world.

The 75,000th machine – one of the new generation A45G full suspension models – rolled off the production line in late June at the factory where the first machine – the DDR631 or ‘Gravel Charlie’ – was made, in Braås, Sweden. And although Volvo articulated haulers can be found all over the world, the 75,000th machine is staying relatively local, going to Norwegian customer Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner AS.

“There’s no question that we have the best product, says Esbjörn Fritzell, Vice President of Volvo CE’ Trucks business platform. “The fact that so many of our haulers are still working around the world is a testament to their usefulness and durability – it’s almost impossible to kill a Volvo articulated hauler!” While it took a while for the world to fully appreciate the benefits of articulated haulers, the machines are now in demand as never before, finding work as production machines in mines and on all types of infrastructure projects. This is driving the trend for larger machines – such as the newly introduced 41 tonne class size of the 75,000th machine, the A45G.

In typically Swedish style, the landmark 75,000 articulated hauler was marked modestly – with factory workers celebrating the achievement with ice creams. Then it was back to work, to meet the demand that is seeing Volvo take a bigger lick of the articulated hauler market.

“There’s not many companies can say that they are still the market leaders half a century after they invented a concept,” says Håkan Ask, business platform leader for Trucks at Volvo CE. “Having made 75,000 machines we are still showing the way, building more productive and fuel-efficient machines that are the envy of the industry.”

Over the last 51 years, the models have increased in size and sophistication. The first 15 tonne capacity machine built in 1966 can fit into the haul body of the A60H – Volvo’s flagship 55 tonne articulated hauler.

ANGLIAN DEMOLITION CHOOSE ANACONDA DF410 FOR THEIR AGGREGATE OPERATIONS IN NORFOLK Norfolk-based demolition and asbestos removal company Anglian Demolition Ltd recently took delivery of a brand-new Anaconda DF410 Scalping Screener to screen contaminated C&D material to remove asbestos from aggregates before crushing. Lee Storer commented, “We have had other machines in on demonstration from some of the world’s leading manufacturers, but when RK6 came in with the DF410 we were totally surprised by the performance, footprint and aggressive screen box that the Anaconda had to offer. The machines we trialed were all in a similar range as the Anaconda, but just did not provide the same separation of asbestos which is crucial to us to provide a saleable aggregate. Dan Flack from RK6 was always helpful and on hand to answer any questions we had”. The Anaconda DF410 is one of the best compact scalping screeners in its range and

is the most popular machine that Anaconda Equipment currently manufacture. Weighing in at just 15.6 tonnes, it leads the way in aggressive screening of any machine of its size on the market today. Variable speed belts and a high energy 3m X 1.2m (10’ x 4’) screen box it’s the largest in its class. All belts fold hydraulically and the machine has a fixed screen angle of 15 degrees. The machine can also be containerised for easy shipping requirements. There is the options of either JCB or Deutz engines and can come equipped with either Bofar Bars, Finger Screens, Punch Plate or Wire Mesh. A radio remote control is also available.08
