Learning a New Language

Just before I settled down to write this column, I watched a YouTube video of former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey giving his first press conference in Italian with his new club, Juventus. It was a brave attempt, even if his Italian was imbued with an accent and inflection that hovered somewhere between North London and Cardiff. I feel his pain.

EDITORIAL Editor Mark Anthony - Mark Anthony Publicity markanthony@markanthonypublicity.co.uk 07973 465 166

By the time I came to the construction equipment industry more than 30 years ago, I was already a journalist. My spelling was pretty good, my grammar remarkably proficient in spite of my south London upbringing and comprehensive school education. And I could drive a typewriter. Where I struggled, however, was learning the language of the industry I suddenly found myself within. Booms and dippers, elevated sprockets, track gauges and dig depths all sounded like so much gibberish to me. And the first time I heard someone describe a wheeled excavator as a “rubber duck”, I was pretty sure that I was the victim of an industry prank.

Assistant Editor Fred Anthony - Mark Anthony Publicity anthonyfreddie@googlemail.com 07973 465 166 SALES Sales Director Ben Chambers ben@chambers.media 01903 899942

Over the years, however, I learned the language. Even though I am quite easily the world’s worst operator, I speak digger fluently. There are times when I even sound like I know what I am talking about.

Head of Sales Ben Cumberland ben.cumberland@chambers.media 01903 899943

But it appears that I – together with the rest of the industry – must now go back to school and learn a wholly new language if we are to survive and succeed in this business in the coming years. And that language is one of electronics, telematics, simulators and apps.

Business Development Manager Luke Chaplin lue@chambers.media 01903 8986874

I have had the good fortune to attend several major exhibitions this year, staring with Bauma, moving on to PlantworX and culminating in the recent DemoExpo. All three shows were markedly different in size, stature and audience. But they each shared a common bond. And that bond was that they all – to varying degrees – spoke this new language. As well they might.

You see, improvements and enhancements within the construction equipment industry are generally incremental. A latest generation excavator might be able to dig a few millimetres deeper than its predecessor, and it might be able to do so while consuming slightly less fuel or producing slightly fewer emissions. In the field of electronics, however, the changes are not evolutionary, they are revolutionary. They forego the “one small step for man” and instead jump straight onto the “one giant leap for construction kind”.

These systems have the ability to make sites safer and equipment more secure. They can help users save money, save fuel and, ultimately, save the planet. As a plant enthusiast, it pains me to say it. But while the hardware might be nice to look at, it is the software that is now setting the tone for the industry.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

A new long reach Case excavator is spearheading the construction of a “Ha-Ha” at an exclusive housing development in Suffolk. Diggers and Dozers reports.

I’ll be honest. I thought I had misheard; that something had been lost in translation between Miles Yallop’s Suffolk brogue and my south London lugholes. “We’re using the Case machine to create a Ha-Ha” he said again. I had to stop him. “A Ha-Ha?” I enquired. Turns out that it was neither Yallop’s accent, my ears nor any misunderstanding. A Ha-Ha, it transpires, “is a recessed landscape design element that creates a vertical barrier while preserving an uninterrupted view of the landscape beyond. The design includes a turfed incline which slopes downward to a sharply vertical face (typically a masonry retaining wall). Ha-has are used in landscape design to prevent access, for example by grazing livestock, without obstructing views. The name “HaHa” is thought to have stemmed from the exclamations of surprise by those coming across them, as the walls were intentionally designed to be invisible.” Well you live and learn. Regardless of the origins of the term, managing director Miles Yallop and his Ashby Plant Hire team are busily creating this extended 700 metre long gully using a Case CX130 DLR excavator. The machine is equipped with Leica GPS technology and a Steelwrist tilt rotator, the combination of which help to provide an almost unbelievable level of precision and fine grading capability. That is even more remarkable given the 00 metre reach of the machine. Imagine trying to eat a Chinese takeaway with six foot chopsticks and you have some idea of the challenge. And yet, a combination of operational dexterity and fine control

5

DIGGERS & DOZERS

consistently delivers a grade as precise as any you’re likely to see anywhere. “The Case long reach is guided but not controlled,” Yallop explains. “The GPS system ensures that the machine follows the 3D model of the site, but the precision of the trimming and shaping is entirely down to the operator.” The CX130 DLT is the latest addition to an Ashby Plant Hire fleet that already has a strong Case bias to it. Indeed, elsewhere on the site are three more Case machines; each playing a different but necessary role. A Case trencher was used for the utility works, cutting trenches to take water, gas, electricity and communications pipes and cables. A 695ST backhoe loader is the site’s workhorse. During Diggers and Dozers’ visit to the site, the machine is in perpetual motion. It is loading one moment, carrying the next and then performing digging duties in between. It serves as a timely reminder that, while the backhoe loader continues to fall out of fashion, it remains the Jack of all trades and a master of a good many of them. The story behind Yallop’s purchase of the backhoe loader is a tale of apparent apathy and indifference. “I went to the three main manufacturers of backhoe loaders and two of them just seemed disinterested,” he recalls. “By the time those two got back to me with a price, the Case machine was already on site and working.” Working close by is a Case 1150M dozer that is also equipped with a GPS system to match precisely the predetermined sweeping grades and inclines that will ultimately give this exclusive housing development a sweeping backdrop. Powered by a 95 kW SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Tier 4 engine driving through a hydrostatic transmission, the Case dozer is as pushy as a double glazing salesman. But in this application, the machine is the gentle giant; the GPS system subtly raising and lowering the 3,048 mm blade to produce a natural-looking rolling landscape. “The blade on the Case dozer is controlled,” Yallop explains. “You still have to operate the machine but, once you’re within 300 mm of grade, the blade becomes fully automatic and follows precisely the 3D model of the site.” It is no accident that the site is almost exclusively Case. “I bought my first Case machine about 20 years ago and they have looked after us very well ever since,” Miles Yallop concludes. “In my experience, some other manufacturers are content to rest on their laurels but Case are always eager to help.”

Sutherland Double Down on Volvo Sutherland based Edward Mackay Contractor Ltd has opted for a second Volvo EC140E excavator, thanks to the machine’s impressive fuel economy, operator comfort and acceptance and general productivity according to Director, Scott Mackay. “We’ve been operating Volvo articulated haulers for a long time and in recent years we have been adding Volvo excavators to our mixed fleet of equipment and found them to be productive economical machines, finding favour with our operators in terms of comfort and performance,” says MacKay. “In particular, we find the EC140 an optimum-sized excavator for building roads on wind turbine and pipeline projects and compact enough for working on confined building sites.”

supplied with a powerlatch quick coupler and a range of buckets including a 75” hydraulic tilt bucket. The new EC140E joins four other Volvo excavators ranging from the compact EC18E to the forty tonne EC380E in an overall fleet of twenty-two excavators

The EC140E is powered by four-cylinder Stage-IV compliant Volvo engine, developing 122 nett hp and offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. For example, the maximum reach with the standard 3m dipper arm is 8.85 metres and gives a maximum dig depth of 6 metres, but, in particular, the lifting capacity at full reach across carriage is a generous 1.9 tonnes. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders, as are quick-fit hydraulics and a hammer/ shear service. Other options specified by Edward Mackay are additional LED work lights, guard rails around the machine’s superstructure and a boom proximity limit switch. The EC140E has been

together with an array of articulated haulers, loading shovels, rollers and site dumpers. For complete peace of mind, Edward Mackay has taken out a Volvo Gold full repair and maintenance contract whereby SMT GB will take care of all the servicing and repair needs for the machine going forwards.

Bobcat Battles Plastic Peril By efficiently removing waste and debris of all sizes on a beautiful and very popular beach in Italy’s Puglia region, a Bobcat SC200 Sand Cleaner attachment has shown it can be a powerful weapon against the threat posed by plastic and other waste in seas and on beaches around the world.

The world’s beaches and marine environments are plagued by a wide range of waste items including plastic in all forms from bottles, plastic bags and food containers to microparticles. In Europe, around 80 percent of beaches suffer from waste, according to a European Commission report published in 2016.

smallest waste, such as cigarette butts, bottle caps, pieces of glass, splinters of wood, tins, stones, plastic bags, syringes and algae, the most common type of waste on European beaches.

The Sand Cleaner attachment working in Italy was purchased by Baia degli Aranci, a prestigious Puglia tourist resort in Vieste (Foggia), which includes a large beach spanning over one hectare of fine sand, beside a crystal-clear sea loved by tourists from all around the world.

The collected waste is then stored in its 350 l integrated collecting bucket and can be directly unloaded onto a truck or into a container thanks to the hydraulic opening system of the bucket and the lift arms of the compact loader on which the attachment is mounted. It is a highly effective sand cleaning tool with a cleaning depth adjustable down to 20 cm, interchangeable sieves with four mesh sizes and a rear blade for optimum finishing.

Able to cover vast areas with a reach of up to 15,000 m2 per hour, the Bobcat Sand Cleaner quickly sieves sand and collects even the

waste, provides a model for how the attachment can be used on beaches around the world. Baia degli Aranci purchased the Sand Cleaner from local Bobcat supplier, F.lli Colucci D&A, together with a Bobcat T650 Compact Track Loader. Highly satisfied, the resort has added other attachments since, such as a root grapple for picking up bulkier items, a fork for preparing and clearing the site, a bucket for sand handling and a mixer bucket for maintenance and building works at the resort. The robust, top-performing Bobcat Compact Track Loader can be combined with an even wider range of attachments and has proved to be an ideal partner in this perfect solution – in terms of both productivity and cost efficiency. “When we delivered the machine, various other interested companies came to see it at work,” says Luigi Colucci, owner of F.lli Colucci D&A. “The machine also created considerable curiosity and interest at neighbouring resorts, which were quick to see its potential. We have received several more Bobcat Sand Cleaner orders since and are now finalising those deals.” Thanks to its great versatility, the Bobcat Sand Cleaner is ideal not just for tourist resorts such as this one in Italy, but also for local authorities around the world, wishing to preserve the legacy of their coastal and riverside beaches. It also helps keep pollution at bay and restores a sound, balanced environment. As we have seen around the world and as demonstrated in the Natural World films from the BBC in the UK and the 2016 European Commission report, plastic litter accumulating in the sea and on the beaches, is a growing global concern. Millions of tonnes of litter, from plastic bags, bottles, caps, cups and plates to fishing nets, cigarette butts and cotton buds, can be found on beaches every year, not to mention items floating in the sea, such as microplastics, or those deposited on the seabed. This pollution is a threat to all creatures in the marine ecosystem, affecting the entire food chain and that is without counting the impact on tourism. “Pollution of the beaches and seas is a major concern for the Puglia region in particular, which straddles the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea, with a coastline stretching about 865 km,” states Gregorio Mariggiò, a representative of the Green party in the Puglia Region

and spokesman for various regional environmentalist groups. “For protecting the environment, it is crucial to use adequate equipment that does not remove the sand along with the litter and algae.” Francesca Biagini, Bobcat South Europe Attachments Sales Manager, adds: “Protecting our planet is a shared responsibility, and tools for doing this effectively are in great demand. With products like the Sand Cleaner and our Track Loaders, Bobcat is dedicated to being a socially responsible company, developing tools that help not only the wider industry but also the public sector and the environment.” The Bobcat sand cleaning attachment has hugely improved the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of the cleaning operations at the Baia degli Aranci resort, without requiring any kind of maintenance. “Jobs are performed more quickly while saving on resources,” comments Mauro Di Palma, co-owner of Baia degli Aranci and head of maintenance. “The machine is very useful for general cleaning at the start of the season, when the sand is full of organic debris carried by the wind and the tides, but also during the season for removing, down to a depth of 20 cm, all of the small litter that tourists leave behind. “Thanks to its rubber tracks, we can use our compact track loader both on the beach and on the road with a very low pressure on the surface, actually lower than that arising from a person standing on the same surfaces. The Bobcat T650 also ensures outstanding stability, without the risk of sinking into

13

the sand/ground, and its compact size and excellent manoeuvrability allow us to use it even between the umbrellas on the beach.” In the past, cleaning at Baia degli Aranci was performed by local staff using a small sand cleaning machine with very low performance characteristics. Cleaning reached a depth of just 3 cm and was undone with the first gust of wind. Another important benefit of the Bobcat Sand Cleaner is that it is frontmounted, so the operator can monitor the work being performed and the waste accumulating in the bucket. “Our previous machines were towed by tractors, forcing the operator to continuously turn back to check his work,” adds Di Palma. “And the tractor’s wheels would inevitably grind the waste into the ground before the towed tool could reach it.” The great ease with which it can be mounted and dismounted was also instrumental in choosing the Bobcat Sand Cleaner attachment. “All Bobcat skid-steer loaders come with the BobTach fast-coupling and quick-change system,” Francesca Biagini points out. “Any Bobcat attachment can be quickly and safely attached, ensuring versatility and efficiency without wasting time. Genuine Bobcat attachments also feature our unique ‘Plug & Play’ technology, so multiple data streams can be exchanged using a single electric cable conveniently located in the cab. Attachments are fitted with the Attachment Control Device (ACD), a kind of circuit board, allowing the machine to instantly recognise them and establish communication.”

PlantworX in Pictures It could so easily have been a washout. Following hot on the heels of a magnificent Bauma exhibition, PlantworX 2019 was robbed of the opportunity to act as a launch pad for a huge number of new products. And the rain that has plagued the exhibition since its inception pitched up once again and then hung around like a bad smell. However, UK construction folk are made of strong (and thankfully water-proof) stuff. More importantly, the organisers have imparted among both visitors and exhibitors a desire for the show to succeed at all costs. And it is to their enormous credit. Would the show have been better with some sunshine? Almost certainly. But the UK construction industry needs PlantworX and neither the exhibitors nor the visitors were going to allow a bit (a LOT) or rain put them off.

Plug & Play Bobcat Bobcat is launching a new Remote Control System for Bobcat compact loaders. This system allows operators to leave their seat in the cab and control their Bobcat loader remotely. It is compatible with Bobcat skid-steer, compact track and all wheel steer loader models equipped with the company’s Selectable Joystick Controls. Bobcat is the first manufacturer to introduce a Remote Control System as original ‘Plug&Play’ equipment, rather than offering it as an add-on development from a third party. The new system will be commercially available later this year. Remote control solutions have proved their qualities and abilities to save lives in the toughest environments all around the world by providing service during disasters like floods, forest fires, mud or rock slides and in other places where operators can be subjected to dangerous situations.

“We first presented our remote control prototype at Bobcat Demo Days with excellent feedback from our customers, then subjected it to further improvements, testing and licensing, before finally introducing it as an easy ‘Plug&Play’ solution for existing machines for commercial launch,” says Jiri Karmazin, Loaders Product Manager Doosan Bobcat EMEA. “The remote control system can be used in many applications with the focus on limitless visibility, the ability to communicate with the surroundings without the need to be present in the cab, comfort enhancement for applications with noise, vibration and harshness or even in dangerous areas. This was the voice of our customers and the issues we observed on most jobsites,” says Karmazin. The new plug and play system comprises an easily portable and

20

industrial radio remote control solution that can be mounted and dismounted on machines in a matter of minutes, leaving behind the standard machine in its original form. Being able to control the loader from outside the cab offers the operator a completely new and alternative opportunity in terms of visibility and communication. Not only does it provide direct sight of the progress of work with a range of attachments, further increasing the versatility of the loader and a comprehensive range of attachments including angle brooms, augers, breakers, buckets, snow blowers or trenchers and wheelsaws where the operator specifically needs to drive backwards with the loader and this solution offers perfect visibility of the project. It also allows operators to talk face-to-face with project partners and manage the surroundings (verbally or non-verbally) at the same time.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Remote control aims to increase safety, comfort and productivity by distancing the operator from dust, noise, vibrations and other hazards encountered at the workface or on job sites that require special safety precautions. Work can be done faster with higher precision and, in some applications, with fewer personnel on the job site. For increased safety, the system also features an emergency stop button and drop and tilt detection. Every remote-control kit is protected by a dedicated password, with twoway communication providing all the important information about the loader (such as fuel and oil status, warnings, etc.) on a 3.5-inch transflective colour backlit LCD display. The system provides most of the functions that can be performed via direct loader operation, including throttle, light, creep and float controls. There is also speed management control to ensure easier operation in certain applications (such as trenching, tilling, scarifying and so on). The system in very intuitive to use and the training for end users will

be provided by Bobcat dealers. The remote control system is supplied with two exchangeable batteries offering a long 20-hour battery life. The protective case ensures it is easier to transport from one job site to another. This forms part of an updated stateof-the-art ergonomic design with the system housed in a rugged and weatherproof enclosure.

airborne pollutants. The job can be done more easily, with better visibility for managing tight spaces in and around containment areas.

As mentioned above, applications include demolition environments with poor air quality and distracting noise, where the remote control system gives the operator the ability to do work from a distance, free from dirt, dust and noise. For construction work that normally requires two people, this solution can cut labour numbers and costs, as only one operator can complete the job themselves by carrying out work with attachments from outside the cab.

With the remote control solution, operators can work on hazardous applications (such as detecting and removing land mines) and also in areas where more visibility is needed to do the job properly (such as in some road applications).

In the waste and recycling industries, the remote control solution allows operators to handle dangerous or toxic materials from a safe distance, minimising the risk of exposure.

In shipyards with limited space, distancing the operator from the machine keeps them away from hazardous chemicals and other

Wood for the Trees S Richardson Contracting Limited, based in Langholm in Dumfriesshire in Scotland, has purchased eight new Doosan DX160LC-5 HT 16 tonne High Track Crawler Excavators for work on the company’s forestry contracts throughout Scotland and North England.

The new Doosan High Track Excavators were supplied by James Gordon Ltd (Gordons), the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan Heavy range in the South West and Borders regions, as well as the central-belt of Scotland as far as Argyle and Bute and the county of Cumbria in Northern England. Company owner, Simon Richardson, commented: “We were introduced to the Doosan DX160LC-5 HT High Track Excavators by Darren Nicholson, Sales Manager Cumbria & Borders for Gordons Construction Equipment. The Doosan High Track excavators are well built, fit-for-purpose machines that have provided us with many advantages in the forestry work we do from preparing ground and mounding work to drainage and building forestry roads. “The Doosan High Track design allows us to easily negotiate tree stumps and other obstacles in forests, traversing sites much more easily and not having to move/remove the amount of material we had to in the past.” The DX160LC-5 HT excavator combines the upper structure from Doosan’s DX140LC-5 14 tonne model with a heavier-duty 18 tonne class high track undercarriage, increasing the ground clearance from 410 mm in the DX140LC-5 to an impressive 615 mm. In its standard configuration, the digging

depth of the DX160LC-5 HT is 5355 mm, the digging height is 8940 mm and the digging reach is 8080 mm. Simon Richardson added: “Unlike our previous excavators which were specially modified, the Doosan DX160LC-5 HTs are purpose built machines for the forestry and rough terrain work we undertake. We initially tried out a DX160LC-5 HT from Gordons and it performed really well and our operators liked the machine. So it was an easy decision to purchase more of them, particularly when they are part of the excellent package offered by Gordons combining reliable service and maintenance with their fast response.” S Richardson Contracting employs a team of highly skilled machine operators with great experience in the forestry industry. In addition to tree felling and thinning, the company undertakes road and track maintenance within Forestry Commission and private land, tree replanting projects together with land ploughing contracts prior to replanting. The company has been in the business since 2003 and has worked all over the Scottish mainland and islands making ground ready for tree planting. Opening new land for planting trees is not easy but thanks to a strong fleet of equipment including the Doosan excavators, S Richardson Contracting can take on any job anywhere.

24

Doosan also offers the larger DX180LC-5 HT High Track model, which is an enhanced version of the company’s DX180LC-5 excavator, incorporating a reinforced structure and a carefully re-engineered, high performance braking system, offering the same ground clearance of 615 mm as the DX160LC-5 HT, compared to 460 mm in the standard DX180LC-5.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The Doosan High Track models are designed to meet the needs of customers requiring a combination of higher ground clearance, a reinforced track frame and a strong traction system with reinforced upper rollers for work in harsh environments and on projects where larger travelling distances are involved.

The High Track models are particularly suited for constructing roadways, mounding, earthmoving and other duties in the forestry industry, where the higher ground clearance, durable travelling system and the traction force allow them to move with ease over rough terrain, negotiate obstacles such as fallen tree trunks and to pull trailers loaded with wood.

25

The DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT are powered by the Perkins 1204F engine, which combines reduced fuel consumption with the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement. The Perkins 1204F engine provides an output of 81.6 kW (109 HP) and 94.9 kW (127 HP) at 2000 rpm, respectively, in the DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT.

Heralding the Hydraload JCB’s first foray into the rotating telescopic handler market with the unveiling of the Hydraload – a machine that occupies that largely uncharted hinterland between a telehandler and a mobile crane – is not a revolution in the truest sense of the word.

Rotating telehandlers exist already. But what is interesting about the new model from JCB, aside from the fact that this is the world’s leading telehandler producer dipping its toe into the rotating sector, is the reasoning behind its decision. The company has charted a huge growth in the popularity of rotating machines with heavier lift capacities across Europe; a development that is being driven – at least in part – by the embracing of modular housebuilding techniques in which homes are manufactured in a factory and merely assembled on site. So while a standard telehandler has become the go-to solution for lifting and carrying and placing pallets of bricks and blocks at height, this new generation of rotating machines can work as both crane and handler, lifting and

placing loads, picking materials, and generally brining a new level of versatility to modular housebuilding operations. To satisfy that demand, JCB is initially launching the Hydraload 555-210R, offering a maximum lift capacity of 5.5 tonnes and a maximum working height of 20.5 metres. With more than 40 years of expertise in the telescopic handler design and manufacture, JCB has designed the Hydraload rotating machine to meet the needs of specialist lifting contractors and the rental market. Utilising a robust boom construction and a familiar driveline, JCB has focussed on reliability, versatility, productivity, ease of use and safety, as a means of delivering improved uptime and increased customer profitability.

To ensure that set-up time is minimised, the outriggers have Auto one-touch deployment, stowage and levelling. Competitive lift end cycle times and high auxiliary flow rates for efficient winch work, boost productivity further. With a lower chassis engine layout, the machine offers excellent access and class-leading serviceability. A low, clean boom design gives excellent all-round visibility, augmented by comprehensive work light options and camera kits, including a boom head camera for precise placement at height.

With a maximum lift capacity of 5.5 tonnes, the machine offers excellent highly competitive load charts. Easily selectable lift end speed profiles and lift envelope limits help the operator to optimise the machine for specific tasks. A range of specially developed JCB attachments using RFID technology can be identified by the machine, to automatically offer the correct load chart for safe operation. At launch, the company will offer pallet forks, a 5.5 tonne carriage winch, a two tonne x two metre jib winch, a reduced

height jib, 5.5 tonne hook, light duty buckets and a range of fork-mounted accessories, such as waste skips and concrete placing skips. Remote lift end operation and access platforms will also be offered. The Hydraload 555-210R will meet the changing requirements of contractors across the world, as a greater use of off-site pre-fabrication calls for heavier lift capacities and increased on-site versatility. Rotating telescopic handlers have become a genuine cost-effective replacement for smaller mobile cranes, offering rapid set-up and the ability to carry out technical lifting operations. The JCB Hydraload will initially be introduced in Europe.

It’s oh so quiet… ranks of the assembled international trade and technical press saw it long before they heard it. Furthermore, the machine was operated for several minutes within the same auditorium. No journalists inhaled toxic gases or ingested potentially harmful particulates because the machine is emissions-free. That is pretty much all you really need to know about JCB’s leap towards a quieter and cleaner construction and demolition future. But here is how all that is achieved. Utilising leading-edge automotive battery technology, the 19C-1E will deliver all of the performance of a conventional diesel-powered 1.9-tonne mini excavator with a reduction of both internal and external noise levels. Believe me, the only audible noise is the rubbing of tracks on the ground or the faint hum of the hydraulics.

The JCB 19C-1E can be powered by three or four lithium-ion batteries, to provide 15 kWh or an optional 20 kWh of energy storage. This is enough for a full working shift for the majority of mini excavator customers. The machine is initially equipped with both 110V and 230V charging, while a fast charge option will soon be available. The 230V 16A supply requires an eight-hour charge time from empty, while the 110V supply would require a 12-hour charge time. Onto the Next Stage

JCB feature

JCB has set out its stall in readiness for the arrival and impending enforcement of Stage V emissions regulations. The new standards came into force on January 1, 2019 for engines below 56 kW and above 130 kW. They take effect a year later on January 1, 2020 for engines in the 56 to 129 kW range.

40

The EU-only standard calls for a further reduction in particulate matter and also broadens the regulations to include a much wider range of engine power outputs and applications. EU Stage V encompasses other fuel types, such as natural gas, and more static machinery such as generators. JCB Power Systems will use a combination of next-generation particulate control technology, incorporating a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), integrated diesel particulates filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet European Stage V emissions regulations. “JCB engines have low emission, high efficiency combustion technology

DIGGERS & DOZERS

developed for Stage IIIB and Tier 4, which means we started development for Stage V from a very good position,” insists Alan Tolley, JCB’s Group Director of Engines. “JCB’s particulate control technology features low particulate combustion, an oxidation catalyst, particulates filter and integrated engine and filter regeneration control system. “It’s a completely integrated solution that’s highly reliable, highly effective and invisible to the customer as it is installed within our existing machines’ engine bays, and, in normal use, no operator intervention or additional service attention is required.” JCB’s three litre Dieselmax engine is rated at 55kW with a class-leading maximum torque of 440 Nm. It powers JCB’s backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers and other midrange machines. It features a compact after-treatment system comprising JCB’s particulate control technology and auto-stop which shuts down the engine after a period of idling to minimise fuel consumption.

The Stage V version of the 4.8-litre EcoMAX engine, which powers JCB Loadall telescopic handlers, mid-range wheeled loading shovels and the larger TM telescopic wheeled loaders, produces 81-129kW (108-174hp) and boasts peak torque outputs from 516Nm to 690Nm. It features the compact after-treatment system comprising JCB’s particulate control technology with an SCR urea injection system for NOx reduction, and also benefits from the adoption of a wastegate turbocharger and auto-stop technology that shuts down the engine after a period of idling to minimise fuel consumption. JCB has also introduced a compact 3.0-litre EU Stage V diesel engine to its mid-range machines. The four-cylinder DieselMAX engine, is 24 percent smaller and 30 percent lighter than JCB’s own 4.4-litre EcoMAX powerplant, yet offers 10% higher torque output, with a real world five percent fuel saving. The engine uses innovative particulate and

NOx control technologies, that combine the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation filter (DOC) in a single unit. The engines feature autostop technology for further emissions reduction. The 3.0-litre engine delivers 55kW with a class-leading 440Nm of torque at just 1,150rpm, 10 percent higher than the larger 4.4-litre EcoMAX. The compact engine produces five percent less CO2 while benefitting from a five percent fuel consumption improvement. Service and maintenance costs have also been cut by 30 percent, thanks to 500-hour service intervals, hydraulic lash adjusters in the valve train and a sealed-for-life crank case ventilation module, eliminating filter replacement. The engine is equipped with four glow plugs, for easier cold weather starting, reducing cranking time. The engine is fully integrated with JCB’s LiveLink telematics system, providing vital operating information in real-time for customers and dealers. JCB dealers will

also provide a manufacturer-backed DPF/DOC refurbishment program and be able to deliver a de-emissionisation strategy for used equipment exports to non-emissionised territories. The compact dimensions of the downsized 3.0-litre engine, have allowed JCB’s engineers to install the engine and exhaust after-treatment within existing engine canopies to maintain marketleading visibility. The 3.0-litre Stage V engine will be offered on the 531, 535 and 540 Loadall models, 3CX backhoe loaders, large platform skid steer and compact track loaders, 6T to 9T site dumpers, RTFLs and 13 tonne excavators. JCB’s 8-10 tonne midi excavator models have also been updated, to meet the forthcoming EU Stage V emissions regulations. The Dash-2 machines will benefit from a host of detail improvements, making the excavators easier to maintain and to operate.

JCB is to introduce a second engine option for the compact 403 loader. While the current 26kW (36hp) model will remain in production, the company will also offer a 19kW (25hp) Smart Power model, for those customers seeking ultimate fuel economy. JCB will also make a folding ROPS frame available as an option on the

JCB’s 85Z-2, 86C-2, 90Z-2 and 100C2 compact excavators have been comprehensively updated to meet the EU Stage V emissions standard. All four excavators will continue to use JCB By

Kohler diesel engines, that now feature a combined DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) exhaust system. Power outputs are unchanged and engine auto-stop and a one-touch idle feature have been incorporated as standard, to reduce fuel consumption and cut emissions. Finally, for now at least, JCB will launch updated 407 and 409 wheeled loading shovels to meet the latest EU Stage V emissions standards. Both loaders will retain the JCB Diesel by Kohler engine from the previous generation, however the installation will require a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet the new emission level. Power outputs are unchanged, however JCB will offer an automatic engine shut-down feature, pre-set by the factory. This can also be changed by the customer, through the forward console display, to improve engine efficiency.

403 for the first time. Designed to work in low height applications, the folding frame reduces the overall height of the machine from 2,235 mm, to just 1,845 mm, making it suitable for work in multi-storey car parks and in agricultural sheds. The ROPS/FOPS structure retains a glazed roof section, with protective mesh and can also be supplied with working lights, including new optional LEDs. The 403 will be offered with a free-flow hydraulic return line, for motorised attachments and the machine will be available with a hand-controlled inching function. This will allow the operator to set the travel speed, independent of engine rpm, to allow powered attachments to be operated while moving at a steady inching pace. For customers who require additional stability when handling attachments, the 403 can also be ordered with an extra 160 kg counterweight. This bolts on beneath the machine, increasing the full turn tipping load by up to 151 kg and should be particularly useful for builders’ merchants and other operators requiring higher load handling capabilities. The additional counterweight will not be available with the lower powered Smart Power model.

LiveLink Comes of Age Telematics have been around for a while now and the demolition sector is quite familiar with the potential benefits that constant machine monitoring and fault diagnostics can bring. But there’s a problem. You see, when major equipment manufacturers like JCB announce new developments in the field of telematics, they generally do so alongside the launch of hot new machines that tend to hog the headlines. It’s like Skoda showing off a new mid-range car at the Geneva Car Show while exhibiting between Bugatti, Ferrari and Lamborghini.

JCB feature

The difference, however, is that the use of telematics can reduce fuel consumption, slash owning and operating costs, help eliminate theft, and make a major contribution to site safety. JCB is currently celebrating the 250,000th machine coming under its LiveLink umbrella and has added several new products to its telematics portfolio to make the system more customer-facing, more allencompassing, and more responsive than ever before. So, rather than pushing these latest developments to the background, we’re taking a closer look over the next few pages:

Launched 12 years ago, LiveLink Telematics gives machine operators and fleet managers easy access to all data at the click of a button through an online portal and mobile app. LiveLink enables machines to be monitored by JCB Uptime Centres across the globe to ensure JCB owners – whether individual operators or fleet managers receive world-class customer service and maintenance support. New LiveLink technologies and features include: •

LiveLink Fleet – enabling fleet operators to monitor vital information such as fuel consumption, faults and machine idle time to improve profitability as well as hit sustainability and environmental targets by monitoring carbon emissions. JCB Operator app – allowing daily checks and inspection documents to be recorded and submitted digitally as well as storing useful manuals. This app can also be linked to LiveLink Fleet. LiveLink Tag - For tracking items without a power source, the LiveLink Tag is ideal in providing the location of attachments or implements. This Bluetooth tag communicates with LiveLink

telematics hardware fitted to any JCB machine if it is within a 50 metre distance. The item is then visible to locate in the LiveLink telematics web portal.

Operator App

The JCB Operator app is available to all machine operators on iPhone and iPad devices with Android availability set to follow later this year. The app addresses common issues seen on construction sites across the world today. Paper-based machine checks are a mandatory safety requirement on many sites, yet they are often illegible, submitted late, easily damaged or not thoroughly completed. JCB has addressed this by making the machine checks process electronic through the JCB Operator app. Once the user has logged into the app, they can scan the data plate on

JCB machines or manually enter a machine serial number. Machine checks specific to the given model are provided if the user has an online connection, if not a generic machine checks template will be provided. Rental companies and site specific check templates can also be created if required. The user simply carries out the machine check process by either passing or failing individual checks, with the ability to add comments or take photos on any failed checks. The operator has the option of emailing completed checks if required, for example to safety or site management. Checks can be completed offline if necessary and will be submitted once an online connection is established. These checks are then visible to act upon and take necessary action in the LiveLink Fleet portal. Useful documents, such as quick start guides, are also available for the operator to view along with safety and inspection certificates.

LiveLink Fleet

LiveLink Fleet takes the headache out of managing multiple brand machine fleets, allowing customers to collate and make sense of data in a single place by integrating external telematics data feeds from other equipment manufacturers and aftermarket telematics providers. The platform provides the user with easily understood machine health alerts, safety alerting including failed checks supplied by the JCB Operator app, and service alerting. Health alerting is limited to critical items only which have been opened within the last one hour period. These alerts are designed to be easily understood by both operators and fleet management, for example low fuel levels, air filter blockages and water in fuel. Customers can also directly engage with JCB dealers from the LiveLink Fleet portal. Features include requesting assistance, such as a technical enquiry or urgent action in the event of downtime, and requesting a service on a machine. The relevant dealer will then be in touch to book in a service at a convenient date and time.

JCB feature

The all-new LiveLink Fleet portal is designed to allow the user to quickly see the current status and required actions of their machine fleet. It is targeted specifically at owner operators, fleet managers and rental companies to

provide as a value added offering to the rental customer.

46

Customers are able to improve profitability through a selection of analytics data. This includes machine hours, time spent in idle and fuel usage. Sustainability and environmental targets can also be met with the ability to provide carbon emissions data. Through LiveLink Fleet, the user is able to link seamlessly to a variety of JCB systems through a single login. If more detailed telematics information is required on a specific model the user can select to link to the LiveLink telematics portal. To oversee this ongoing telematics revolution, JCB is forging ahead with a massive expansion in digital technology to support global customers – including a unique system which predicts and prevents downtime.

Documents such as safety and maintenance inspections can be uploaded to specific models if required, to complement the JCB supplied quick start guides and declaration of conformity. Non-telemetry related assets can be added into LiveLink Fleet if required, such as machines and attachments, enabling documents to be attached and checks to be performed in the JCB Operator app. The LiveLink Fleet portal can also be customised by changing colours and incorporating organisation logos if required. JCB Operator and LiveLink Fleet were officially unveiled to UK customers at PlantworX; international launches will

It joins high-tech hubs at JCB World Headquarters in Rocester, Pune in India, and Santa Monica and Savannah in the United States as well as ten dealer-based centres. Launched in 2010 the Uptime Centres bring together JCB’s dedicated parts and technical specialists to ensure machines work at their most profitable level – keeping downtime to a minimum. They collate real-time data through LiveLink to track the condition and availability of customers’ machines around the world, then use the

information to identify potential issues which can be dealt with through dealer network service specialists. Among the innovations being deployed are JCB Uptime Dashboards which are home to JCB’s new and unique Machine Health Monitoring System. The system uses predictive algorithms and data transmitted via LiveLink to identify at-risk machines, and enables specialists to make recommendations on preventative maintenance that may reduce unforeseen downtime. The introduction of Certified Dealer Uptime Centres around the world also brings the power of JCB technology to local dealerships and enhances the service support they offer to customers globally. “Since the launch of our first Uptime Centre in 2010, we have seen a transformation in the time it takes to close technical cases. The centres enable us to work proactively in predicting potential issues and suggesting preventative maintenance steps to minimise unplanned downtime,” says JCB Group Managing Director Parts and Service Ian Sayers. “Our investment in Uptime Centres and Certified Dealer Uptime Centres across the globe reiterates JCB’s commitment to provide the industry’s finest customer support and through innovation ensure JCB machines are the hardest workers on site.”

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The introduction of some of the latest models, which will offer the best production outputs, adds to one of the largest plant machinery fleets in the UK. GDL’s commitment and further investment in the latest technology signals more growth for the Scottishbased ground improvement specialist. The introduction of the new Wirtgen WR240i stabilisation mixer with an integrated binder spreader from

Streumaster, which is mounted on a customised Hydrema chassis to GDL’s existing fleet allows the company to offer increased and significant capacity within the soil stabilisation market. Following many years of experience, the Hydrema spreader design is the direct result of extensive collaboration between GDL and the manufacturer to create a bespoke solution for the company that is suited to its application. The team at GDL also has a long association with the Wirtgen Group having operated their stabilisation mixers, spreaders and rollers for over a decade. As recognised leaders in their respective fields, the companies have also worked in partnership to advance the use of soil stabilisation techniques in the UK. “Working together with the team at GDL allows us to focus on their experience in order to develop machines that deliver their technical knowledge and expertise on the ground in live projects for their clients,” says Richard Allsopp, Operations Director for Wirtgen Ltd. “Our collaboration gives us a competitive edge and is driving the successful use of soil stabilisation techniques on a wide range of projects in the UK.” This latest investment in plant machinery will help GDL to maximise the capabilities of its current and extensive in-house fleet of plant, and it will enable the company to fulfil a range of new and existing contracts.

49

“As we look ahead to major infrastructure projects such as HS2, we need to ensure that we can provide the most up-to-date modern plant in order to effectively manage the requirements of these types of complex strategic projects,” says Kevin Mackenzie, Managing Director for Ground Developments Ltd. “This includes new machines that can maximise our capacity while featuring the latest safety features such as 360°-degree cameras and hi visibility handrails.” “We’re constantly looking at ways in which we can deliver innovative ground improvement, and our experience over the years has allowed us to work directly with manufacturers such as Wirtgen and Hydrema to create our own bespoke and preferred spreading solution,” says Mackenzie. “As environmental regulations continue to swing in our favour, forcing greater consideration to be given to the maximum re-use of material onsite, we envisage that soil stabilisation will be a mainstream consideration for any UK earthworks project.” With over 20 years’ experience, GDL one of the largest providers of soil stabilisation services in the UK. The company provides technical solutions for challenging sites, often utilising the soil stabilisation technique in conjunction with other ground engineering solutions that it offers such as deep soil mixing, vibro compaction and piling.

NEW Bobcat Telehandlers

With the inclusion of the latest high performance 8 m TL43.80HF and 7 m TL30.70 telehandlers, Bobcat now offers a choice of 13 rigid frame telehandler models for applications in construction, rental, recycling, waste and general industry, covering maximum lifting capacities between 2.6 and 4.3 tonne with lifting heights from 6 to 18 m.

The new TL43.80HF increases the lift capacity in the Bobcat range to 4.3 tonne, combining this with a maximum lift height of almost 8 m. The TL43.80HF is a compact telehandler offering an impressive package, which brings together high productivity, robustness and rough terrain ability in the same machine. It provides a new solution for heavy lift handling applications found in general industry, manufacturing, building materials, warehousing, quarrying and mining. The TL43.80HF is also ideal for farming work. The very high stability of the TL43.80HF is due to the box welded frame, the low load centre, the long wheel base and the new massive rear counterweight, allowing Bobcat to minimise the overall dimensions of the machine, resulting in a width of only 2.30 m and a length of less than 5 m from the rear to the fork face. Together with a short turning radius of just 3.71 m, this new Bobcat telehandler is a very manoeuvrable machine, a particularly useful feature when it comes to working in confined environments.

50

“Our new TL43.80HF has been a fantastic investment, combining excellent lifting capability with superb compactness,” says John Suggitt, who runs construction, storage and farm businesses in Driffield in East Yorkshire. “I was looking for a telehandler that could lift 4 tonne and offer a reach of 7 m, but with the TL43.80HF, I can lift a massive 4.3 tonne with a lifting height of 8 m. Being 20 cm shorter than the equivalent 7 m machines, the TL43.80HF gives me the compactness and productivity I need to work in the tight spaces on site and in my storage facilities.” The TL30.70 provides a maximum lift capacity of 3 tonne and a maximum lift height of nearly 7 m, for a wide range of applications in construction/rental/recycling/ waste/general industry. The compact width of 2.1 m in the TL30.70 ensures it provides a cost effective format in the 7 m class. The compactness and stability of the TL30.70 makes this machine a perfect tool for easy pick and go or for lifting materials to height on housing and commercial property developments.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The TL30.70 offers an excellent compact and cost-effective alternative to larger 7 m models, especially where working spaces are tight and increased manoeuvrability is required. In addition, performance is not compromised as the TL30.70 offers an outstanding maximum reach of 4 m with a load of more than 1 tonne. At the maximum lift height, users can lift up to 2 tonne of weight, which is sufficient to place a pallet of heavy bricks in most conditions.

All Bobcat telehandlers are covered by a three year/3000 hour warranty as standard, with the option of extending the warranty to five years/5000 hours.

The entire Bobcat range of telehandlers are designed and produced at the company’s plant in Pontchâteau in France.

“At Bobcat, for over 60 years, we have been constantly innovating the market - always developing new machines for customers’ needs. The new TL43.80HF and TL30.70 continue this legacy as they complete our range of telehandlers and ensure customers can benefit from unmatched loading productivity and lift capacity. Bobcat machines are made for tough jobs, whilst still providing all the agility and versatility any application would require,” saya Olivier Traccucci, Bobcat Telehandler Senior Product Manager.

GOW go Volvo Thurso based Gow Groundworks has taken delivery of a widespread Volvo EC140E LM excavator for its ground working and general contracting business. This is the second specially converted EC140E LM excavator to join Gow’s fleet of equipment with the LGP conversion working being undertaken by Central Engineering Ltd. This has enabled the machine to carry 1400mm track pads when working in areas requiring ultra-low ground bearing pressure, for instance, on peat bogs or to switch back to the standard 750mm pads for general usage.

“We have a lot of experience operating Volvo wheeled and crawler excavators and find them very reliable and productive,” says Alan Gow. “They are the machine of choice with our operators for comfort and handling and we also like the fact that Volvo is tied in well with Steelwrist tiltrotators as this adds another dynamic to what the machines can do. For us, Volvo certainly

understands the needs of their customers in terms of specification, optional equipment and the fact you can fine tune attachments very easily.” The EC140E is powered by fourcylinder Stage-IV compliant Volvo engine, developing 122 nett hp and offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, the maximum reach with the standard dipper arm is 8.85 metres and gives a maximum dig depth of 6.0 metres, but in particular the lifting capacity at full reach across carriage is a generous 1.9 tonnes. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/ shear service. Other options specified by Gow besides the LGP conversion were for all the handrails and steps to be powder coated in Kawasaki green and the counterweight to have green and white reflective prismatic chevrons. This striking green colour is useful for spotting the machine from a long distance whilst working in forestry application. Additional LED work lights have been added to the counterweight, rear of the cab and underside of the dipper arm. At the business end of the machine Alan Gow has had a Steelwrist tiltrotator installed making the machine highly dynamic for the typical work the machine will undertake.

Contrak Construction of Newcastle under Lyme has taken delivery of its first ‘large’ Volvo excavator in the guise of a reduced swing ECR145E for its groundworking and general construction activities. The ECR145E has been supplied complete with the two-piece boom option, dozer blade and a Steelwrist tiltrotator which ticks all the boxes for proprietor, Phil Cookson.

NEW CAT 950GC for K J Services K J Services, a specialist plant hirer to the construction and quarrying sector, has purchased a Cat 950 GC Wheel Loader in a deal with Finning UK & Ireland. Adding to the company’s existing Caterpillar fleet, the machine was chosen for its strength, manoeuvrability and ease of maintenance. The South Wales-based business purchased the Cat 950 GC in early 2019 and has now logged over 340 hours of operating time, realising both financial and operational savings. The wheel loader is an ideal solution for loose material handling, machine loading, general construction and stockpiling jobs. In addition, K J Services is benefitting from Cat Product Link remote monitoring solution for fleet management, using the VisionLink interface to monitor the machine’s usage, fuel burn and productivity. “We purchased this machine and loading shovel about three months ago and it has already proven its value. We opted for the Cat 950 GC model as a smaller and more manoeuvrable alternative to the Cat 950M, which we are already familiar with,” says Jack Stephens, Plant Manager at K J Services. “We’ve had great feedback from the operators on site, all of which have commented on the improved visibility and comfort in the cab.” “Operators are able to perform their pre-start checks more easily and quickly because all access points are at ground level. On previous machines we’ve had to sometimes lift the bonnet to perform standard tasks, which takes time, whereas the new machine helps reduce these routine tasks to a minimum,” says Stephens. “We also use Product Link to provide valuable insight into the machine’s performance, which helps us to cut time and costs. Every machine in our fleet, including the 950 GC is monitored to provide insight in to machine hours, fuel burn, and idle time, to name a few. The user-friendly software provides all the information we need to monitor the health, performance and productivity of our fleet.” “Any faults on the machine are flagged automatically. With the help of the support team at Finning, these faults can be analysed and remedial action taken, alongside proactive management of the machine’s ongoing performance,” says Stephens. “We chose Caterpillar products for their reliability, connectivity and the resale value of the machine. So much so that 99 per cent of our fleet is made up of Cat equipment. The Cat 950 GC has proved itself as a valuable addition to the fleet. In just three months, the machine and system have delivered great results and we already looking to purchase additional units.”

54

“We needed a slightly larger, more productive machine in our fleet, yet the compactness offered by the reduced swing counterweight coupled with the two-piece boom and of course the Steelwrist tiltrotator, makes the ECR145E an ideal machine for working on confined house building sites,” says Cookson. “The

CONTRAK’S CONSTRUCTION CONTORTIONIST flexibility this combination gives us is already ticking all the boxes in terms of stability and all round performance. From the ground up, the machine has been equipped with the optional heavy-duty dozer blade. At the business end of the machine, Phil has opted for the two-piece adjustable boom option and 2.5m dipper arm to facilitate the fitting of the Steelwrist tiltrotator. Besides the hammer shear hydraulics which come fitted as standard, the machine also sports an X3 rotation circuit. The 16.7 tonne ECR145E

is equipped with a Stage-IV 4-litre Volvo engine producing 122 hp which operates in conjunction with an advanced-mode control system ensuring the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. Thanks to the two-piece adjustable boom, the machine has an optimised compact design yet offers a maximum reach of 8.6 metres, a digging depth of 5.6 metres as well as a generous lifting capacity of 1.7 tonnes across carriage in the worst position.

New Leica, Trimble and Xsite Ready Kits are now available for the Doosan range of wheeled and crawler excavators from 14 to 30 tonne, to meet the increasing demand for machine guidance systems for use with excavators.

Doosan guidance system ready The new Ready Kits can be ordered direct from the factory through Doosan Smart Solutions for use with Leica, Trimble and Xsite 2D and 3D machine guidance systems. Machine guidance Ready Kits offered by Doosan can differ according to the model and the region concerned. The collaboration between Doosan and these machine guidance system manufacturers means that customers in Europe are now able to order excavators pre-installed with Leica, Trimble and Xsite Ready Kits. These kits include all the components required to make sure a machine is ready for the installation of a guidance

system at a later date. They enable a faster and simplified installation of the respective machine guidance system components with very little or no welding, repainting, drilling or disassembly required. The Ready Kits are fitted on customer machines in the Doosan Customisation Centre in the Netherlands. As a result, lead times on machines have been reduced and the process also lowers workloads in dealer/ customer workshops. It is even possible to modify existing orders up to just a few days before the machines are shipped to the customer. Another advantage is that the systems are fitted by fully trained staff at the Doosan Customisation Centre, so it is an integrated and professional process. The Ready Kit option gives a customer flexibility as they are not obliged to install the complete 2D/3D system immediately. The customer’s excavator will have the main brackets, wires and sensors installed in readiness for the rest of the 2D/3D system to be added at a later date. These machine guidance systems give operators access to design surfaces, grades and alignments on a display inside the excavator cab. The systems use GNSS, GPS, laser, sonic or total station technology to accurately position the blade or bucket in real time, significantly reducing material overages and improving the contractor’s productivity and efficiency. Depending on the system in place, the site plan and grade information can be displayed

in the cab, so operators can finish jobs faster with minimal supervision, obtaining higher precision finishing with a reduced number of passes. In addition, there is no need to wait for subcontractors to provide survey and grade checking information, ensuring jobs are completed correctly the first time. This can reduce rework and the need for stakes, hubs or stringlines, which can also reduce costs and the risk of errors. Use of a common machine guidance platform across an entire excavator fleet allows customers to port the system between machines and machine types. Flexible and scalable components can be used on a wide variety of machines for an even faster return on investment. The improved productivity that results leads to a reduction in personnel and machine costs and accurate grading also helps customers to carefully control material usage and fuel costs.

Business Booming Bobcat Europeans associate the town of Carhaix-Plouguer, in central Brittany, on the border of three French departments (Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor and Morbihan), with its Vieilles Charrues festival, one of the biggest music festivals in France. But here in the heart of Brittany, Bobcat equipment has an equally solid reputation and strong roots, having contributed to the dynamic and diversified economy of this region for over thirty years. It is easy to see why TIPMAT, a dealer and distributor of Bobcat/Doosan equipment, chose to set up shop here in Carhaix. The town is just a 60-minute drive from Brittany’s largest ports, such as Brest, Quimper, Lorient, Saint-Brieuc and Saint-Malo. Strategically located, Carhaix provides an exceptional environment at the crossroads of the region’s various economic activities. With industries such as fisheries, maritime transport, agriculture, forestry, mining, livestock farming, logistics, agrifood processing, construction, land-use planning, Brittany continues to be one of France’s most dynamic regions, with unemployment at its lowest and a dense

fabric of SMEs which are among the region’s greatest strengths. In 2018, TIPMAT, which is based in Carhaix, sold just under 100 new and pre-owned Bobcat and Doosan machines including loaders, telehandlers and compact excavators, to be used in farming, livestock breeding and forestry activities; in the construction industry (earthworks, drainage, demolition and soil remediation especially on livestock farms, of which there are many in central Brittany), equestrian centres and in ports (for the maintenance of docks and the unloading of cargo holds). The TIPMAT team at Carhaix mainly works in the field, specialising in aftersales service, with eight mechanics (a foreman and two permanent mechanics in the workshop as well as three travelling mechanics with four mobile workshops and a van for lighter support work) and an assistant foreman. “It’s difficult to quantify this, but here in central Brittany, I think the Bobcat/ Doosan fleet consists of almost a thousand vehicles in operation. In certain rural communities, such as

60

Gourin in the Morbihan, which is approximately 15 km to the south of Carhaix, there are up to 25 Bobcat machines in an area of just a few square kilometres,” says Jean-Baptiste Lucas, the director of TIPMAT in Carhaix-Plouguer. Bobcat, a family passion! “Daniel Jaffré Sarl”, a family business that operates out of Gourin, currently has a fleet of 12 different Bobcat machines, with about thirty different attachments including buckets, grapple buckets, sweepers, trenchers, chippers, augers, graders and steel tracks. Ever since he bought his first compact loader, a Bobcat 543, for his farm and his large chicken coops in 1987, Daniel Jaffré – followed by his two sons, Anthony (33) and Jonathan (29) – has developed a business that specialises in earthworks and drainage projects, which relies entirely on the performance and the versatility of Bobcat equipment. The list of the Jaffré family’s Bobcat machines is long and includes compact excavators (331E, 442, 430, E85 and two 220 models); a Doosan DX140 crawler excavator; T200H compact track loaders and two T300 models; a T770 and a

T870; compact skid-steer loaders (543, 463, 440B, 753, 7753, S300 and S770), as well as three 873 models, an 873H, and the best-selling machine in Brittany, i.e., the S70, which can be found in almost every equestrian centre in the region. “When our father bought his first compact loader in 1987, a Bobcat 543, he initially intended to use it to clear the manure out of the three large chicken coops. Two of these buildings were at least 300 m long and 12 m wide, with three rows of posts inside, and a dirt floor. At the time, Bobcat equipment was still very much unknown in France and he was immediately convinced by the machine’s manoeuvrability, compactness and performance,” says Jonathan Jaffré, the youngest son.

real Bobcat museum with old photos, all kinds of parts and attachments and an amazing collection of branded objects including clothing, caps, calendars, pennants, umbrellas and scale models. “Before we could even walk, my brother and I would sit on the seat of these Bobcats next to our dad. I can’t remember when exactly we started to operate them ourselves for the first time but I think we must have been 3 or 4 years old,” says Anthony Jaffré, the oldest son, who also trained as a lorry mechanic. “In the last ten years, we both joined the family business. Every day we work with at least one of the 12 Bobcat machines we currently own, each tallying up at least 1000 to 1200 hours a year on this equipment.”

Subsequently, Daniel Jaffré cleared the chicken coops of one of his neighbours, and then those of others and so on and the rest is history as they say. In just a few years, this developed into a full-time activity. According to everyone in the area, he truly invented and developed a new niche business. Nowadays there are six companies in Brittany that specialise in the clearing of chicken coops, stables and housing on livestock farms – of which there are many in the region. But historically speaking, Daniel Jaffré was the first.

The performance, manoeuvrability and compactness of their Bobcat equipment enabled the Jaffré family to specialise in all kinds of precision earthworks and drainage projects. Their versatility has allowed them to take on all kinds of jobs. They work anywhere, and in any weather conditions. Daniel Jaffré, the father, has continued to specialise in the maintenance and clean-up of chicken coops, stables and hangars, of which there are many in central Brittany. This is physically demanding work, which requires a lot of endurance and concentration.

The building housing the machines in the Jaffré family business in Gourin is a

But it is also a precision job, working in a very confined environment, which relies

62

on dexterity and careful manoeuvring. Ever since he bought his first Bobcat 543, Daniel Jaffré swears by the hand/ foot controls, just like his sons. “When doing precision work, this allows us to better manoeuvre the machine, relying on our reflexes for better control. The hand/foot controls make you feel as if you are one with the machine and you immediately notice any resistance or obstacles,” says Anthony Jaffré . Daniel’s sons – Anthony and Jonathan – have succeeded in diversifying the business, specialising in earthworks, land development, drainage, the remediation of dirt floors and groundworks in preparation for the pouring of the concrete to meet the required hygienic levels for floors in farm buildings, and even including the clearing, reduction and maintenance of forests. They also take on fence post work and carry out regular landscaping and land development jobs.

Rockwheel Acquires Hartl Crusher the internationally renowned Red Dot Design Award.

German rotary cutter manufacturer Rokla GmbH, which operates under the Rockwheel brand, has announced its acquisition of Austrian crusher and screening bucket specialist Hartl Engineering & Marketing GmbH. The deal includes the use of the Hartl brand, inventory and intellectual property. No redundancies are expected as a result of this announcement, and the sale price is not being disclosed. The Hartl family’s Modular Solutions Division is not included in the deal.

Based in Langenburg, Germany, Rokla has been manufacturing and marketing rotary cutters under the Rockwheel brand since 2013. Already regarded as a leader in its field, Rokla has also been ranked among the fastest growing construction equipment companies in Germany. “The market for Hartl’s product offering has developed well in recent years and this acquisition promises to further strengthen Rokla’s position as a leading supplier of excavator attachments,” says Robert Piasecki, Managing Partner of Rokla. “Rockwheel and Hartl products are particularly complimentary, making the rationale behind the deal even more compelling for customers.”

Hartl Engineering & Marketing GmbH was established in 2011, building on a long history of the Hartl family name in the crushing sector. Under Rokla ownership, Hartl will remain an agile, entrepreneurial, brand. Rokla will make available its considerable competences and add resources to allow Hartl Crusher to expand its market coverage and customer base. Hartl Crusher was founded by brothers Dominik and Alexander Hartl, and quickly established itself worldwide as a leading manufacturer of crusher and screening buckets. Supplying customers in nearly 70 countries, the product range is based on many years of experience and innovations, including the Quattro movement. In 2013, its crusher buckets were awarded

64

Rokla co-owner, Klaus Volkert, agrees: “The focus on innovation, high-quality standards and the uncompromising use of first-class components in Hartl products correspond exactly to our own philosophy. We are particularly pleased to be able to build on this solid foundation.” Dominik Hartl is also pleased with the sale: “With Rokla we have found the ideal buyer. It is a dynamic and owner-driven company that is a market leader in its respective segment. We are confident that Rokla will help deliver Hartl further success, benefiting customers, distributors and suppliers alike.” Alexander Hartl explains the rationale behind the decision to exit the attachment segment as freeing up resources to concentrate on the family‘s expanding Xelectrix energy storage brand.

Much to Celebrate And that open day gave a clue to the reputation and the popularity of the Pladdet range, attracting over 5,000 people over the space of two days and treating them to an impressive display of new and old equipment and a comprehensive work tools range that is a match for any in the industry. That range includes purpose-built excavator and wheel loader buckets, tilt rotators, grabs and grapples, forestry and demolition attachments, screening buckets, and a full line-up of attachments for the rail sector. Outside the factory, surrounded by Hitachi excavators, was a display area in the centre of which was the showstealing refurbished Ruston Bucyrus drag line excavator. At each corner of the display area stood another Hitachi excavator; one being used to test visitors’ precision in an operator challenge; another showing off Pladdet’s suction excavation unit; and the last demonstrating the versatility of the SMP tilt rotator.

Here in the UK, the Pladdet name is something of a new kid on the block; an attachments Johnny-comelately. But in the company’s native Netherlands, the company has clocked up an impressive 75 years of equipment production, an anniversary it marked recently with an open day at its newly extended factory in Paulinaweg.

All of those attachments, together with the Swedish-built EMA Sverige range of buckets, and SMP parts, are on sale in the UK through Pladdet UK in Wokingham.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

R.Collard Ltd. Purchase Two RubbleMasters from Red Knight 6 Ltd. At the same time as the RM 100GO! demonstration, R.Collard Ltd were transferring material for processing from their Reading depot over to Eversley at huge expense. The company had trialled compact jaw crushers, but none were robust enough to handle the required material. The guys at RK6 recommend the 19.5 tonne RM 70GO! for trial. We’d been advised to take a jaw crusher for the material, but the RM 70GO! impact crusher offered us the mobility, robustness and return on investment that we needed,” said Rob.

ADVERTORIAL

R.Collard Ltd, the leading demolition and waste management business in the South-East of England, have selected two RubbleMaster impact crushers from UK supplier Red Knight 6 Ltd (RK6). R.Collard Ltd were founded over 25 years ago and currently have 240 employees, 6 depots and over £34m turnover last year, making them one of the leading businesses in their sector, covering Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. The company, who specialise in recycling, haulage, earthworks, skip hire and ready mix concrete, as well as demolition and waste management selected an RM 70GO! 2.0 and an RM 100GO! after extensive demonstrations of both machines. The RM 100GO! was the first machine on trial to fulfil the need to process concrete, demolition

waste and recycled washed materials crushed down to a more profitable size. The trial lasted a week and satisfied the cost factors vs the quality of output and therefore greater and quicker return on investment, as well as the variety of material that it can deal with. The RM 100GO! will be used at R.Collard Ltd’s Eversley quarry site. “We’d been talking to other companies, but our long relationship with RK6 and their flexibility and approach to helping find a solution was crucial in making our decision. We needed a machine that can not only handle a variety of material, but also generate value back to the business. The RM 100GO! was great in trial and ticked all of our boxes,” said Rob Collard, Managing Director of R.Collard Ltd.

Both the RM 70GO! 2.0 and the RM 100GO! specialise in processing concrete with rebar, asphalt, C&D waste and rock, producing a wide range of materials on demand. The RM 70GO! 2.0 is one of the most mobile tracked conveyors in the range and offers huge flexibility to customers. The RM 100GO! is the real work horse in the range, processing up to 275 tonnes per hour and ready to start crushing in just 20 minutes from unloading. Paul Donnelly, Managing Director at RK6 added: “We always recommend seeing just what these impact crushers can do. They are such capable machines and deal with a variety of feed material, but produce good quality product. Working with the team at R Collard Ltd, from demonstration and training through to commissioning has been great because they are so knowledgeable and understand the power impact crushers can have on the business.” For more information on Rubble Master machinery, visit the RK6 website www.redknight6.co.uk
