The Age of Electrics

Plant owners, operators, enthusiasts and assembled tyre kickers will by now have their travel booked for the Bauma exhibition in Munich, the largest gathering of construction equipment anywhere in the world.

EDITORIAL Editor Mark Anthony - Mark Anthony Publicity markanthony@markanthonypublicity.co.uk 07973 465 166

We have taken a look ahead at just some of the hottest new kit that will be on display at the show; and it seems clear that we are entering a new age of electrical power. Caterpillar will be showing off its new Cat D6 XE dozer (see page 32) while Bobcat will be displaying its new E10e mini excavator (see page 16). JCB will be conspicuous by their absence, but they too have thrown their hat into the electric-powered arena with the 19C1E.

Of course, three or four machines do not a trend make. And, like in the automotive industry, there is still much work to be done to make electric power a truly viable alternative to fossil fuels. But, importantly, the fact that big name manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Bobcat and JCB are embracing electric power as part of their respective product lines marks a welcome change.

Head of Sales Ben Cumberland ben.cumberland@chambers.media 01903 899943 Business Development Manager Luke Chaplin lue@chambers.media 01903 8986874

Just a few short years ago, as the construction equipment industry stumbled towards satisfying the onerous Tier 4 regulations, manufacturers’ research and development became so fixated upon emissions that it largely stymied other aspects of innovation.

While electric powered machines will be taking centre stage at Bauma, it is likely that electronics will be the true star of the show. Advanced telematics, once the preserve of mines and large quarries, are becoming increasingly commonplace. And as Caterpillar has demonstrated with the launch of the Cat App (see page 00), those telematics have the capability of placing fleet management – literally – in the palm of your hand.

Yanmar Launch Used Equipment Service

4

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Yanmar Construction Equipment Europe has launched a used equipment remarketing service to help plant hire firms seamlessly update their fleets. The company pledges to evaluate and purchase existing rental machinery, offsetting the value against new Yanmar models.

Available through dealers across the UK and Ireland, the service will allow plant managers to invest in state-of-the-art equipment without the inconvenience of re-selling their current fleet. Convenient, comprehensive and cost-effective, the remarketing proposition applies to all sizes, ages and brands of equipment. Working in partnership with MASCUS, the industrial vehicle marketplace, Yanmar will manage the ongoing resale of each used model. “Providing operators with stateof-the-art rental equipment is essential for plant hire companies worldwide. Unfortunately, this often requires investing in new machinery while existing fleet models sit in the yard awaiting resale – a huge financial drain,” says Olivier Crahay, remarketing manager at Yanmar CEE. “Our remarketing service aims to make refreshing your fleet quick and easy, while alleviating the issue of selling used equipment. In result, we hope to increase operator access to the latest Yanmar models.”

In with the New East Lothian based A M Dagg (Plant Hire) Ltd has opted for another Volvo excavator – this time a fourteen-tonne EC140E, thanks in part to the good service and reliability of an older EC140B it replaces after 17,000 trouble-free hours. “We’ve had a good experience operating all of our Volvo machines over a long period of time,” says Plant Manager Scott Gordon. “Our operators certainly appreciate the Volvo machines in regard to the comfort in the cab, the controllability, digging performance and overall build quality. In addition, Volvo has provided us with very good backup when it’s been needed and we have a very good relationship and understanding with the SMT team at Stirling. The residual values on the Volvos are very strong too, so opting for another new Volvo excavator for our mixed plant fleet made perfect sense.” The EC140E is powered by fourcylinder Stage-IV compliant Volvo engine developing 122 nett hp

and offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. “So far, we’re really pleased with the new E-version in every respect, particularly with the arrangement of the operator’s

6

compartment,” says Gordon. “The Volvo cab has plenty of leg room and good all round visibility thanks to the side and rear mounted cameras which is a real boon working on confined sites. It’s certainly a hit with our machine operator and we are confident we will get a similar length of the service to the old B with the EC140E!”

DIGGERS & DOZERS

JCB has launched its first ever full electric mini excavator, the 19C-1E - a powerful compact model with zero exhaust emissions and one that is considerably quieter than a standard machine. Utilising leading-edge automotive battery technology, the 19C-1E will deliver all of the performance of a conventional diesel-powered 1.9-tonne mini excavator with a reduction of both internal and external noise levels. The JCB 19C-1E can be powered by three or four lithium-ion batteries, to provide 15 kWh or an optional 20kWh of energy storage. This is enough for a full working shift for the majority of mini excavator customers. The machine is initially equipped with both 110V and 230V charging, while a fast charge option will be available. The 230V 16A supply requires an eight-hour charge time from empty, while the 110V supply would require a 12-hour charge time. The batteries have been designed to last the operating life of the machine.

The high efficiency of this advanced electric-hydraulic combination means only a small hydraulic cooler with a small thermostatic electric fan and no engine radiator - contributing to longer battery life and the lower noise level. With no daily checks of coolant and engine oil levels required, the machine can commence work quicker than its diesel counterpart.

23

Initially, the mini excavator will be available with a ROPS/TOPS and FOGS certified canopy. As the electric excavator is based on the premium specification 19C-1, the excavator comes with proportional rocker switches for auxiliary functions and boom offset swing. The premium model also has a membrane switch pad to the right of the operator for all additional controls, while the fuel gauge has been replaced by an easy to read charge level readout. Zero emission operation at point of use, with no tethers or unsafe trailing cables, will allow contractors to work inside buildings and in emissionssensitive inner-city environments. It will also permit rail contractors to operate in tunnels and underground, without having to install costly exhaust extraction equipment. Contractors will also be able to work after normal hours in urban streets, without disturbing residents, as well as operating in other noise sensitive environments including near hospitals and schools.

mini excavator featue

Using a 48V electrical system, a highly efficient electric motor delivers instant torque, to power the machine’s proven Bosch Rexroth load-sensing hydraulic system. This delivers the same sector-leading digging performance as the standard 19C-1. The hydraulic system also delivers a 32 litre/min twin flow auxiliary circuit and the mini comes with an integrated hand-held hydraulic tool circuit option, for added versatility.

The machine has three digging modes, controlled by a rotary dial. In the ‘low’ setting the electric motor runs at 1,200 rpm, in ‘general’ it operates at 1,600 rpm and in ‘high’ mode the motor spins at 1,800 rpm. There is an additional Auto Kick Up mode for tracking, where the motor operates at 2,300 rpm for rapid movement of the machine between digging sites. The 19C-1E is equipped with the same adjustable undercarriage and choice of digging equipment as the diesel model, providing a maximum digging depth of 2,576 mm with the longer 1,100 mm dipper arm.

Not only the high performance but also the high reliability and this is backed up by the comprehensive aftermarket support provided by Bobcat.” The new R-Series E26 miniexcavator with a canopy and bucket has an operating weight of 2490 kg, a maximum digging depth of 2568 mm and maximum reach at ground level of 4413 mm. The new E27z mini-excavator with the cab and bucket has an operating weight of 2700 kg, a maximum digging depth of 2847 mm and maximum reach at ground level of 4814 mm. The new generation R-Series E26 is an easy-to-use, robust machine optimised for rental industry needs while introducing the next level of operator comfort and features required by demanding owner-operators. The E26 excavator has a transport weight reduced by 100 kg but increased over-the-side lifting capacity. To overcome a common issue in the rental market and thus protect the uptime, the E26 is also equipped with extra innovative features such as the CylinderInside-Boom (CIB) workgroup and its geometry, increasing protection against bucket collision with the cab. “The CIB and geometry features on the E26 are a first. We have to meet the needs of a wide range of operators with different skills and levels of experience. These features provide us with extra peace-of-mind when the machine is rented out,” says Allenby. Like all of the new R-Series machines, the larger operator space and premium interior in the E27z cab deliver best-in-class comfort with an improved entry/ exit thanks to new ergonomic 3D handles and a wider door. The new cab also features

significantly larger windows and narrower pillars giving marketleading all-around visibility. In addition, in the new E27z, the ZTS functionality is taken a level further using Bobcat’s Zero House Swing (ZHS) design, in which the front upper structure is also fully protected by ensuring the front corners are kept within the swing circle and inside the tracks. As a result, the ZHS functionality on the E27z provides the peace-ofmind of 320° of free rotation when working close to walls and other obstructions, without sacrificing on operator comfort or performance, giving users the benefit of 20% more freedom of movement than with a classical ZTS. “This is an important feature for hire companies – as a true ZHS machine, the E27z offers the highest flexibility of movements when working close to walls, coupled with best-in-class 360-degree stability and a low weight for easy transportation,” says Allenby. “The E27z offers the digging output and operator comfort of much larger excavators, making it a machine of choice, particularly for work in urban environments.

27

The R-Series E26 and E27z also meet the upcoming Stage V engine emission regulations, which is a key feature in the very busy low emission London market we serve.” Inside the low noise-low vibration cab, the operator has the benefit of new joysticks and new optimised metal travel pedals. The new minimal effort joysticks offer further enhanced controllability and smoothness of working functions. “At Bobcat, we are always looking to support the growth of start-ups like KC Plant. This might be a new business but it is backed by sound planning and the many years of experience that Rob and his team has in the UK rental market,” says Alan Sams, Bobcat’s UK Sales Manager who worked on the order with KC Plant. “Designed by our European Innovation Centre for customers in Europe, I am very excited about the prospects for the new R-Series mini-excavators in the UK, with rental companies, owner-operators and contractors alike. We are very encouraged by the reception the machines have already received in what is a very competitive market.”

Cat Rewrites the Rules

30

DIGGERS & DOZERS

In advance of its pre-Bauma international press conference in Malaga, Spain, Caterpillar made some pretty bold claims. And then, in front of an audience of professional cynics and sceptics, it delivered on its promises. Diggers and Dozers reports. In a market sector as mature and as competitive as the construction equipment market, change generally comes by way of evolution rather than revolution. Improvements are incremental; so incremental in fact that they’re often invisible to the untrained eye. So it takes a bold company to claim that it is about to “rewrite the rules of the jobsite”. It takes a confident company to make such claims in front of more than 100 professional journalists, the majority of which arrived armed with notepad, pen and a large bag filled with cynicism. And it takes a company like Caterpillar to dispel such cynicism and to deliver on its “rewrite the rules” mantra.

The fully-tilting cab that provides easier maintenance on the company’s smallest mini excavators. The Stick Steer capability of its Next Generation compact excavator models. The advanced electric transmission in the new Cat D6 XE dozer. The new Cat App that places advanced fleet management tools in the palm of the owner or operator’s hand. The list goes on. Over the coming pages, we will do our best to cram in as many of those advances as we can.

31

CATERPILLAR LAUNCH

During two days in the welcome winter sunshine, Caterpillar unveiled innovation after innovation. Some of those innovations were incremental. But many were genuine leaps in technological advancement that served to underline the fact that while Caterpillar might be the largest construction equipment manufacturer on the planet, it is the largest for a reason. Equally importantly, this international press conference showed a company that is not content to rest on its laurels. Rather, it is a company focused upon making its equipment the very best they can be.

CATERPILLAR LAUNCH

It’s Electrifying

Caterpillar was the company that created the now familiar Elevated Sprocket or “High Drive” undercarriage design on its world-famous dozer range. So it seems wholly appropriate that the company should also be the first to unveil the world’s first electric drive High Drive machine too. 32

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The D6 XE is the world’s first high drive electric drive dozer. According to Caterpillar, it offers up to 35 percent better fuel efficiency and increased agility compared to the previous 3-speed model D6T. The D6 XE features a next-generation Electric Drive system that offers high performance along with added durability. Simplified diagnostics and the serviceability advantages of a high drive dozer help reduce service and maintenance costs. With Electric Drive, there are no gears to shift. The fully automatic 4-speed power train optimizes the transmission without the operator having to worry about shifting.

The D6 XE is available in VPAT or push arm configurations with standard or Low Ground Pressure (LGP) undercarriage. A variety of blade types, track shoe widths and rear attachments enable the machine to be optimized for primary types of work to be done. A foldable VPAT blade option,

33

A key element of the Caterpillar international press conference was the company’s use of advanced technology to make machines easier to operate, track and maintain. And that message was certainly true of the new Cat D6 XE. Technology offerings on the D6 XE are led by an updated, factory integrated Cat GRADE with 3D system. The system uses advanced Inertial Measuring Units (IMU), which provide greater speed and accuracy without position sensing cylinders. Smaller antennas are integrated into the cab roof for even better protection. AutoCarry is included with Grade with 3D to automate blade lift to maintain desired blade load, improving load consistency and reducing track slip. Additional GRADE technology choices include: Cat Slope Indicate is standard, showing the machine cross-slope and fore/aft orientation on the primary monitor for quick and easy reference; Cat GRADE with Slope Assist provides basic blade positioning assistance without the need for added hardware or a GPS signal; Factory Attachment Ready Option (ARO) provides optimal mounting locations, brackets, and hardware and simplifies installation of an aftermarket grade control system. The new D6/D6 XE makes it easier to install any brand of grade control system, with specific mounting locations for grade control components. The position of the main display and grade control display can be swapped so operators can choose their preferred location.

CATERPILLAR LAUNCH

The new unit is operated from a completely redesigned cab. A new 254 mm touchscreen display provides an easy-to-use operator interface. The standard air suspension seat is wider with added backward adjustment, plus the entire armrest adjusts independent of the seat for customized comfort. Heated/ cooled leather seat options are available, and all offer a variety of seat adjustments to customize cushion length, head rest position, lumbar support and seat tilt. More storage spaces have been added throughout the cab. Distributed cab heating/cooling, with automatic temperature and blower control, circulates air more effectively around the operator. Less air directed toward windows helps reduce fogging/frosting. Integrated ROPS and 15 percent more overall glass area help increase visibility.

paired with 660 mm track, provides transport width of less than three metres. Waste Handling and Forestry arrangements also are available, equipped from the factory with specialized guarding, seals and other features to help ensure long life in harsh applications.

performance. Engine speed is automatically lowered when there is no hydraulic demand to further reduce fuel usage. The cooling system features a new fan that runs on demand to keep the excavator working at the correct operating temperature for maximum efficiency.

Programmable joystick buttons for response and pattern allow the operator to “dial in” productivity settings. Large front, rear, and side windows enhance visibility; optional 360-degree visibility (336 only) combines images from multiple machine-mounted cameras to enhance the operator’s sight lines in all directions. With a new electrohydraulic system built for responsiveness and efficiency, the Cat 336 and 336 GC feature a new main control valve that eliminates the need for pilot lines, reduces pressure losses, and lowers fuel

35

consumption. Fewer hydraulic lines on the excavators result in less oil required, lowering longterm operating costs. In addition to improving the productivity of the new models, Caterpillar has been working hard to reduce owning and operating costs. A new Cat air filter with integrated precleaner and primary and secondary filters has double the dust holding capacity of the previous design. The new Cat hydraulic return filter has a 3,000-hour service life — a 50 percent increase over previous filter. The fuel system filters are synchronized for service at 1,000 hours — a 100 percent increase over the previous filters. The fuel system water and sediment drains and hydraulic system oil level are positioned close together at ground level, making routine daily maintenance faster, easier, and safer.

With a choice of Comfort or Deluxe cab packages, all Next Generation Cat excavator cabs come equipped with standard features like keyless push-button start, large standard 203 mm touchscreen monitor with jog dial keys for control, and soundsuppressed rollover protective structures (ROPS) to offer the next level of operator comfort and safety. A tilt-up console for the Deluxe cab design affords easy cab entry and exit while new advanced viscous mounts reduce cab vibration by up to 50 percent over previous models. A Bluetooth® integrated radio with

USB ports for connecting and charging phones bring creature comforts from the home to the operator’s office. Automatic climate control maintains internal cab temperature settings, regardless of external ambient temperatures.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The new Cat D6 XE (see page 32) might have gained all the plaudits for being the first high drive and electric drive dozer, but similar technology has been applied to one of the company’s larger wheel loaders too.

CATERPILLAR LAUNCH

The Cat 988K XE is the first wheel loader offered by Caterpillar with a high-efficiency electric drive system. Delivering highproduction in all loading applications, the 988K XE is recommended for demanding job sites where fuel efficiency makes a difference in the machine’s total cost of operation. The new loader features switched reluctance (SR) technology and leverages more than 15 years of Cat electric drive experience and more than four years of stringent testing in a range of applications for proven reliability in the field. The field proven and tested C18 ACERT engine, mechanical dropbox, driveline and axles from the 988K remain in the electric drive machine for consistent, troublefree operation.

Electrical Storm Offering increased truck loading and load-and-carry efficiency, the new 988K XE is said to increase efficiency by 25 percent overall and by up to 49 percent in face-loading applications, as compared to the 988K. This reduces costs and helps operations reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint. At the same time, Caterpillar production studies report the new loader delivers up to 10 percent higher productivity in load-and-carry applications. The new Cat 988K XE loader offers a range of bucket capacities from 4.7 to 13 m3. Rated standard and high lift payload for the loader reaches 12.5 tons (11.3 tonnes) when working with face material and 14.5 tonnes with loose material. Advansys™ Series Ground Engaging Tools (GET) protect bucket components and reduce operating costs, so operations can get the most out of machine performance. The standard 988K XE wheel loader is performance matched to offer efficient three-pass loading of the 38.6 tonne Cat 770G and four-pass loading of the 46.3 tonne Cat 772. Its highlift configuration delivers fivepass loading of the 55.3 tonne Cat 773G and six-pass loading of the 64 tonne Cat 775G. Cat electric drive technology found in the new 988K XE lowers overall maintenance costs, while increasing engine life expectancy. Offering extended oil change intervals of 2,000

Machine Management Goes Mobile For most of us today, our mobile phones and devices are a primary source of news. If you want to check the latest football scores, most of us will reach for our smartphones. Want to watch a YouTube video? The device in your pocket will precisely that, pretty much regardless of where you are. And so the idea of placing demolition equipment fleet management in the palm of your hand is at once forward-thinking, innovative and inevitable. It will surprise no-one that one of the forst to embrace that degree of technology is Caterpillar. Indeed, during the international press conference in Malaga, it was clear that such technology was not just a fad or innovation for the sake of innovation. Instead, this technology is baked into just about every product now rolling off the Caterpillar production line. Indeed, with

the addition of some simple retrofit devices, such innovation can even be applied to existing and older products. At the very heart of this development is the new Cat App, a mobile app designed to allow customers who spend their time in a truck, at the job site and on-the-go to take advantage of equipment telematics data. The new Cat App delivers simplified, streamlined data directly to mobile devices, helping customers monitor machine location and health, react faster to fault codes and maximise uptime. This new mobile equipment management tool gives customers an easy way to monitor their entire fleet, request parts and service, and connect with their Cat dealer from the work site. The exact location of all equipment tracked by the app is displayed on the mobile device, along with the machine’s operating hours, health and utilisation data. It enables operations to get the most from their equipment by moving an under-utilised asset to precisely where it is needed most. Customisable push notifications alert Cat App users of machine operating condition, even if they don’t check into the app every day. Upcoming planned service indicators, based on machine operating hours, are

2018 was a significant year for global earthmoving attachment supplier Miller UK as they celebrated 40 years in business. To honour this occasion they decided to raise money for a local North East charity, Daft as a Brush.

Daft as a Brush Employees at the family-owned Cramlington-headquartered business voted to raise money throughout 2018 for Daft as a Brush, which offers people who are undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment across the north of England free transport to and from hospital. For the Miller family, this is also a charity very close to their heart as they sadly lost a family friend, Joe Brown to cancer last

40

year. Joe grew up with the Miller family and their friendship goes way back more than 40 years, when Keith first founded his welding business, Miller UK. Joe would help to fix Keith’s welding kits in the back of his van as he was a qualified electrician and the friendship grew from there. Further down the line, Joe’s son began working at Miller UK, initially as an apprentice and eventually into a management role where he stayed with the company for 13 years.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Joe was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in in 2016 and it was when Keith visited Joe in hospital that he mentioned the important services that Daft as a Brush had offered him. Joe used the free transport provided by Daft as a Brush so he could receive treatment at the Freeman hospital. The Daft as a Brush volunteers would not only drive Joe to hospital but also stay with him until the treatment was finished, offering support and throughout each hospital visit. Since Joe passed away last year, his wife Sheila Brown has continued to support the local charity. The staff at Miller have been determined to raise as much

money as possible for Daft as a Brush and for every pound that they have managed to raise, Miller UK have matched it with a company donation. Throughout the year, the entire team have taken part in a range of fundraising activities including cake bakes, raffles, craft and sporting/activity related challenges. Through these fundraising events and challenges taken on by members of staff the donations have been totted up and a cheque for the amount of an incredible £3,522.08 has now been presented to Daft as a Brush. “We have had a fantastic response to all of our charity events. It’s something that is

very close to my heart; work hard, play hard and give something back,” says Keith Miller, chairman of earthmoving attachments manufacturer Miller UK. “We chose to support the local cancer charity Daft as a Brush throughout the year and we have done some charity based events internally. Not only is it for a great cause but it’s been really good for team moral.” Daft as a Brush was founded by Brian Burnie, who is currently walking 7,000 miles around the entire coastal path of Great Britain and Ireland to bring free cancer patient transport nationwide. His dream is to create 1,000,000 high-quality journeys for outpatients requiring radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, free of charge. Following World Cancer Day which was on the 4th February, Brian has taken a short break to visit the Gosforth-based charity. “We are extremely grateful to Miller UK and their incredible team for choosing to support Daft as a Brush. The amount raised for Daft as a Brush will go a long way towards helping patients across the region with transport whist undergoing treatment”, says Brian Burnie, founder of Daft as a Brush. Daft as a Brush cancer patient care offers staffed, custommade vehicles to transport outpatients in the region who are undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy cancer treatment to and from hospital, free-of-charge. The service involves collecting and transporting the patients in a safe and comfortable environment, from where they are living, taking them to where they will be having their treatment.

Durable Hitachi To answer the needs of its European customers, Hitachi has introduced a waste handling package for its versatile ZW180-6 and ZW220-6 wheel loaders. This comprises a range of additional features that provide extra protection for the operator and key components, enhancing the safety and durability of the machine, and reducing unscheduled downtime and maintenance costs. In addition to waste handling, the new package is advantageous for demolition and forestry applications. For added protection from falling debris, the medium wheel loaders are fitted with durable guards for headlights and taillights. Seal guards for the wheels prevent material from wrapping around the axles. Steel spiral hose guards

protect the hydraulic hoses of the boom and lift arm cylinder. A lift arm cylinder protector prevents damage from the lift arm cylinders, hoses and tubes, when material is trapped between the cylinders and the front frame. An articulation area guard protects critical components, such as the transmission and parking break, from damage due to fallen debris. To enhance the reliable performance of the machine in waste handling and dusty environments, a dust protection screen with fine mesh and automatic reversible cooling fan

48

prevent the radiator from clogging. The rotation of the fan changes every 30 minutes automatically – and a manual option is also available for flexibility. The waste handling package includes an engine pre-cleaner to eliminate dust and dirt, which will also extend the lifetime of the air filter. For added durability and safety, owners can choose from a range of optional guards for the front windshield, bucket cylinder, and the driveshaft and powertrain. The medium wheel loaders offer exceptional levels of performance without compromising on

efficiency, thanks to low levels of fuel consumption. The EU Stage IVcompliant engine does not require a diesel particulate filter, which reduces maintenance costs. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, also designed to comply with EU Stage IV emission regulations, lessens the wheel loader’s impact on the environment. The SCR system injects urea into exhaust gas to reduce nitrogen oxide from emissions. As waste handling companies occasionally deal with flammable material, the maximum temperature level of exhaust gases is lower on this SCR system. This enables it to meet the high safety standards required in this industry. The quick power switch increases engine output when more power is instantly required, or for

driving uphill. The simultaneous movement of the bucket and lift arm ensures an efficient digging operation. The five-speed transmission ensures increased productivity and fuel efficiency while travelling. The ZW180-6 and ZW220-6 are among the safest machines in their class. They offer the best all-round visibility with a 360° panoramic view from the spacious cab and the rear-view camera. The repositioning of the muffler and air filter, and wide-view mirrors have also enhanced the rear-view visibility. Operators will notice extremely low noise levels inside the cab, thanks to improved sound insulation. To ensure a smooth driving experience on all kinds of terrain, the ride control feature minimises

pitching via the movement of the lift arm cylinders. A smooth operation and exceptional control are ensured by the optional Joystick Steering System (for the ZW220-6), which enables operators to reach high levels of productivity with effortless steering. In the cab, the multifunctional LCD monitor with build-in rear-view display also makes life easier, showing vital information at a glance.

Bobcat at Bauma At Bauma 2019, the Bobcat stand will promote every area of Bobcat’s business, with a vibrant show of brand new and existing Bobcat products and their applications.

The exciting display of Bobcat machines will be complemented by advanced augmented reality technology. The stand will also include areas dedicated to the company’s enhanced aftermarket parts and services as well as financing solutions. One of the star attractions at Bauma will be the launch of the new Bobcat E10e Electric Mini-Excavator, the industry’s first commercially available fully electric, zero tail swing (ZTS) mini-excavator in the one tonne class. The E10e will be presented both in the demonstration area on the stand, but also in its own dedicated zone, one of six on the stand that demonstrate applications for Bobcat products. As well as a full display of Bobcat miniexcavators including several other new models, visitors can see the complete product portfolio from Bobcat with new telehandlers, compact loaders and attachments presented in different application zones. These include Material Handling, Earthmoving, Roadwork, Landscaping and Demolition, just a few of the many areas in which Bobcat products can be used. Developed at the Bobcat Innovation Center in Dobris in the Czech Republic, in conjunction with electric vehicle specialists, the new E10e is based on the design of the very successful conventional E10 mini-excavator, the market leader in the 1 tonne class.

51

BAUMA FEATURE

The E10e is part of a display that will cover the entire Bobcat mini-excavator range, incorporating the company’s new R-Series for the first time at Bauma. Comprising five models (E26, E27z, E27, E34 and E35z) from 2-4 tonne, the new R-Series offers the best combination of high digging forces, outstanding stability and precise controllability in this category. In addition, the lower weight of the machines makes transportation easier.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The Material Handling zone will be packed with new products, with Bobcat showing the company’s new high performance Bobcat TL43.80HF model for the first time at Bauma. The TL43.80HF offers a high lift capacity of 4.3 tonne and a maximum lift height of almost 8 m, for handling applications in general industry and recycling. The TL43.80HF is designed with a heavy duty concept comprising reinforced axles, an additional counterweight and Z-bar kinematics which together give an outstanding range of motion and extra break-out force, combined with the fastest boom movement available in this market. The new E27, E34 and E35z R-Series mini-excavators will form the core of the Earthmoving zone. Even with its optional heavy counterweight, the conventional

swing E27 model offers just 280 mm of tail overhang which allows the machine to be operated in confined spaces. This makes the machine an ideal tool for highly demanding applications where performance together with transportability have a priority over compactness. Also in the Earthmoving zone will be the T450 compact track loader. Manufactured at the Bobcat plant in the Czech Republic, the T450 is powered by the Bobcat D24 45.5 kW (61 HP) turbocharged diesel engine, ensuring the T450 has the best performance and engine power to weight ratio in its class. DIGGERS & DOZERS

Visitors to the Bauma 2019 exhibition in Munich, Germany, will have the chance to get up close to the newly upgraded Terex Trucks TA300 articulated hauler. This will be the first time the machine has been displayed at an international trade show and it will take pride of place on the company’s outdoor stand: FN 720/9. The Terex Trucks team will be at the event, which runs from April 8th to 14th, to show visitors how the company’s two articulated haulers – the TA300 and TA400 – deliver low total cost of ownership and high productivity at jobs including large-scale construction projects, infrastructure developments and quarries.

Since August, the TA300 has incorporated the new EP320 transmission, which comes with two additional forward gears – eight in total – as well as four reverse gears. This helps to ensure smoother gear shifting and thereby superior operator comfort. In addition to this, the TA300 now delivers a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency, as well as enhanced performance, productivity and operator comfort. It also now comes with long life transmission fluid, which has helped to increase the length of time between oil maintenance intervals from 1,000 to 4,000 hours. The hauler’s maximum speed has also increased to 55 km/h (34 mph), up from 50 km/h (31 mph). Ultimately, this means that customers can achieve faster cycle times, reduce the cost of operation per tonne and minimise their fuel consumption.

“The TA300 is one of our staple products, hence why we worked long and hard to make it even better for our customers,” says Douglas. “The upgraded TA300 was rigorously tested for nearly two years internally and by operators on real job sites, working in a variety of conditions.” A glimpse into its latest products won’t be the only thing that Terex Trucks will be offering at Bauma 2019. The Scottish manufacturing company will also be hosting a press event for representatives of the international media on April 11th at 4:00pm. Paul Douglas, the company’s Managing Director, and his team will be on site to discuss product news, market conditions and future plans. “Terex Trucks is currently expanding its presence in key markets and that includes Germany as well as the US and France,” says Douglas. “We already have three well-established dealers in Germany but we’re looking to sign more – particularly in the east and north-east of the country. Bauma will be a good opportunity for us to meet and attract new customers and dealers.”

BAUMA FEATURE

“Bauma is the world’s leading construction machinery trade fair, and as such, it’s a showcase of virtually every machine in the industry – but for Terex Trucks, it’s all about the articulated hauler,” says Paul Douglas, Managing Director of Terex Trucks. “The articulated hauler is the only product Terex Trucks manufactures – so therefore we’re able to focus all our attention on this machine. We are the experts in all things articulated hauler. That’s one of the key messages we want to get across at Bauma 2019: we specialise in robust, reliable articulated haulers. We will also be discussing the investments and improvements we’ve made in our product line and our growing dealer network. All of this, which is underpinned by our long-standing expertise in the field, has helped us to make sure our articulated haulers are even more productive and reliable. Terex Trucks is the strongest it’s ever been.”

in front of a global audience,” says Douglas. “As well as this, we’ll also be using the show as a chance to inform people about our TA400, which is the biggest articulated hauler we make. In terms of maximum payload, it’s 10 tonnes (11 tons) bigger than the TA300.”

“Having recently launched an updated version of the TA300 that boasts improvements in fuel efficiency, performance, productivity and operator comfort, we see bauma 2019 as the perfect opportunity to display the hauler

on a showroom floor of nearly 450 m2. Here, the focus will be on condition monitoring and system solutions. In hall B5 (stand 439), guests can learn more about the latest innovations from Liebherr’s extensive attachment tools program. Visitors can also find out more about internships and entry-level positions with Liebherr at the Career Point on the company’s outdoor stand as well as in the ICM Foyer (stand 308). Here, Liebherr will be one of 16 top companies taking part in the THINK BIG! event for schoolchildren.

BAUMA FEATURE

For Liebherr, gathering feedback from customers, machine operators and industry insiders is crucial to facing the future together. This makes Bauma a perfect platform. One of the key topics for the future is digitisation, which is now impacting all product areas; in terms of assistance systems or service and training options, for example. At Bauma 2019, Liebherr will debut a new series of Tower Cranes with fibre ropes which will be available for sale starting in April. This new, high-strength fibre rope is around one-fifth the weight of conventional steel rope, but has four times the lifespan and is much easier to use. Liebherr will unveil four new products from its Mobile Cranes Product Division at the Bauma event. These build on proven technologies to provide better performance, efficiency and flexibility. The construction machine manufacturer will also present a new crawler crane with a load capacity of 300 tonnes. It features innovative assistance systems that increase safety and make it easier to handle. Starting in January and throughout 2019, Liebherr will be introducing

its new generation of earthmoving crawler excavators. During the first phase, seven new models will be released in the 22 to 45 tonne range. The new, eighth generation crawler excavators guarantee more power, more productivity, increased safety and greater comfort for the operator. For the new XPower large wheel loader, trade visitors can also look forward to a total package with many smart assistance systems. Features also include the new rear bystander detection and a built-in, sensor-powered tyre-monitoring system. With these and other assistance systems, Liebherr offers total solutions to optimise safety and comfort during everyday wheel loader operation. All these systems are developed by the Liebherr Group so they can be fully integrated into the control systems of the machinery. In the mining area, visitors will have a chance to experience the power of Ultra-class mining trucks and excavators. A single dashboard makes fleet management easier than ever.

64

Construction-industry enthusiasts should check out the completely redeveloped 42 M5 XXT automatic concrete pump for the mid-range class. Many technical parts come from Liebherr’s own component production. One outstanding product is the new Liebherr Powerbloc drive unit for the pump system. All hydraulic switching and metering elements are fully integrated. This eliminates the need for many hydraulic lines and other parts. At the fair, Liebherr Components will also reveal the demo version of an app which shows the extensive functionality of all Liebherr’s condition monitoring components, from diesel engines to energy storage, hydraulics, transmissions and slewing bearings. In the future, this will enable machine manufacturers to inform fleet managers, service personnel and machine operators about the condition of their components. The Components division will also be presenting a full range of new products.

Electric future at Bauma

BAUMA FEATURE

Visitors to this year’s Bauma 2019 exhibition in Munich, Germany, will be given a glimpse into the technological future as Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) looks at Building Tomorrow, showcasing its latest machines and integrated services.

66

DIGGERS & DOZERS

Demonstrating the breadth of the Volvo Group, Volvo CE will be joined at Bauma 2019 by sister companies Volvo Penta, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Financial Services. The companies’ participation at the show is much more than a static display – it’s a live event. Under the theme of Building Tomorrow, Volvo’s 2,293m2 indoor stand in Hall C6 and 5,870m2 outdoor stand at FM714 will be a non-stop interactive performance featuring the complete product and service portfolio, for today, tomorrow and well into the future. Bauma 2019 will be the first major industry event following the recent announcement that Volvo CE is to go electric on its Volvobranded compact excavators and compact wheel loaders in 2020. With this move, Volvo CE becomes the first construction equipment manufacturer to commit to an electric future for its compact machine range. The first two hydraulic-electric machines will be unveiled at Bauma, followed by a staged market-by-market introduction and ramp up in 2020.

In all, there will be 50 machines on Volvo’s two stands, grouped into the sub-themes of ‘load’, ‘dig’, ‘haul’, ‘pave’, ‘innovation’ and ‘service’. Of these, Volvo Services has a much higher emphasis than ever before at this year’s Bauma, with every machine supported with a dedicated service offering, via touch screens and other displays. There will also be plenty of action happening in the company’s outdoor area. Set to the soundtrack from Volvo CE’s mini-film Pump It Up, featuring Hollywood star Dolph Lundgren, will be a fun machine show – unarguably the best in the business. There will also be Operators’ Club competitions and live action displays on the further developed Dig Assist solution and attachments.

BAUMA FEATURE

Excavators are the stars of the show, continuing the thrust of Volvo CE’s worldwide ‘Excavators For Any Challenge’ campaign. New excavators that will be launched at the show include the all-important 20 ton EC200E, alongside the EC15-EC20E compact excavators. Demonstrating not only the breadth of Volvo’s excavator line, but also its length, will be the new EC750E high-reach demolition excavator. As if all that weren’t enough, there will also be the game-changing launches of the EC300E hydraulic-hybrid excavator and an EC220E that features Volvo Active Control automated boom and bucket movements for a more efficient digging process. More to come on these important launches in April.

Don’t miss Volvo’s adjacent inside display area either, where the excitement comes in the shape of events that prove that Volvo CE’s success is as much about the excellence of its people as its machines. Throughout the day, a professional master of ceremonies will conduct entertaining presentations focusing on the company’s product and service solutions. This will be supported by video cubes displaying a range of customer interviews, facts, figures and fun. For the first time there will also be an Innovation Area – while the exact details are still under wraps, Automation, Connectivity and Electromobility are sure to be in the spotlight.

EJ Civils Praise Hyundai E J Civils is a groundworks company based in Lincolnshire – the company’s main source of business is groundworks for ma jor housebuilding company Taylor Wimpey, alongside other leading developers, located in the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire areas.

68

“All of our work is ‘word of mouth’ and we are very fortunate to have such a good working relationship with Taylor Wimpey – who we do the majority of our work for,” says Kevin Walsh Managing Director of EJ Civils. The company has a fleet of 20-machines ranging from three to 22 tonnes. The company’s most recent purchases were three 14 tonne Hyundai HX140L machines from Corby based Hyundai dealer, Willowbrook Plant.

DIGGERS & DOZERS

The company also has a 22-tonne R220-9A Hyundai which Kevin purchased second-hand around a 1.5-years ago whilst the machine was still under warranty. “We were laying big pipes and we needed a bigger machine and the R220-9A came up just at the right time. Unfortunately, the demolition company who previously owned the machine went out of business,” says Walsh. “We purchased the machine through Hyundai dealer HES Enterprises in Manchester – we got a real good bargain! There were two 22-tonne machines available, both in full demo spec, but we missed out on buying both as one was already sold – so we bought the last one. It is an excellent machine – a real work horse!” “I like everything about the new Hyundai’s! The fuel efficiency is very good – if you hit some ‘hard stuff’ when you are digging it will automatically give you more power for that and then power down when you don’t need so much power. Also, the fuel lines are not so sensitive on the Hyundai’s which is particularly important during groundworks. The cab is very high spec as standard on the Hyundai’s and it comes with excellent vision.” Walsh also likes the fact that with the Hyundai HX140L you get four LED lights on the front of the machine instead of two. And he also said that they were ‘proper lights’ and that even working at night there were no shadows. “We have the Around View Monitoring system on our machines too (AAVM) which means our operators can see all around the cab and shows if anyone is in the vicinity of the machine – if they do an alarm sounds alerting the driver. It’s brilliant! Health and Safety standards at Taylor Wimpey are

one of the highest in the industry and they absolutely love the idea of this safety system.” “Another safety aspect of the Hyundai is the fob system which is a keyless start – where your key stays in your pocket.”

Kevin could not praise Willowbrook for the company’s service and support, and he anticipates that within three-years he will be replacing all of his excavators with machines from Willowbrook and will be running a 100% Hyundai fleet.

NEW Volvo for Grundon Grundon Waste Management Ltd has taken delivery of a new Volvo EW240E materials handler for its Colnbrook operation following a successful demonstration and evaluation. Replacing a competitive model, the new Volvo EW240E MHE takes up residence at the company’s Waste Transfer and Material Recovery Facility at Colnbrook handling segregated waste destined for the nearby incineration plant or for landfill. Whilst Grundon has operated Volvo equipment for many years on the aggregate side of their business, this is the first Volvo materials handler the company has purchased. “We were looking for a change of supplier and the Volvo performed very well on demonstration but to be quite honest, our decision came down to the best deal on offer at the time,” says Steve Fisher, Grundon’s Divisional Recovery and Resources Manager. “We also listened to the opinions of our operators who gave the Volvo the thumbs up and so far we’ve been very pleased with the

way the machine is settling in here at Colnbrook.” While the transfer station operates around the clock, seven days a week, the new charge operates a twelve-hour shift, loading high-sided bulkers which either transfer segregated waste to the incineration plant or transport to landfill. It also feeds a high-capacity mobile shredder which reduces larger and diverse material down to a size that can be accepted for burning. In total, some 50,000 tonnes of waste will be handled by the machine each year. Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 171 nett hp, the EW240E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined equipment and slewing operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload

74

relief valves, whilst maintaining lift capacity and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent ‘all round’ visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate control system. An adjustable eas-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions. The EW240MHE offers the operator the benefit of maximum visibility around the work area, thanks to the hydraulically raised and lowered cab with a maximum elevation of 5.7 metres. The new EW240E has been supplied with a 6.5m straight

boom and 4m sorting arm whilst Grundon has sourced and specified their own 1.5 tonne Arden selector grab for the business end of the machine. Thus rigged, the EW240E materials handler provides a maximum forward reach of 10 metres and a maximum height of 12 metres measured at the attachment pin. With an optimum 800-litre capacity grab, the machine has a generous 3.7 tonnes lifting capacity at maximum reach across carriage with its outriggers down. To facilitate grab rotation, the machine is equipped with x3 hydraulics along with x1 hammer/shear hydraulics and hose rupture valves fitted as standard. Other options which have been added to the machine include a Fireward fire suppression

system, Groeneveld twin greasing system and flashing rear blue strobe lights. The machine also sports highly visible chevrons on its counterweight which are made out of microprismatic vinyl sections. The machine has been provided with

an extended warranty package and will be covered by a Volvo Blue service agreement which means its regular maintenance will be carried out by Volvo trained technicians using genuine Volvo parts at the correct service intervals.

JCB Cab Systems Factory Construction work on the new £50 million JCB Cab Systems factory is forging ahead as it targets a summer opening. The shell of the 350,000 sq ft plant next to JCB Heavy Products and the World Parts Centre at Uttoxeter is on course to be completed slightly ahead of schedule ready for high-tech production line facilities to be installed from March onwards. The investment, one of the biggest in the company’s history, will create the most advanced and productive cab facility in the world with a computer controlled production line, fully-

automated painting facility and robotic welding. The new site will accommodate 400 employees, who will relocate from Rugeley. “We are delighted with progress on the new site. A strong team focus on the delivery timeline and favourable weather means completion of the infrastructure and main building is ahead of schedule,” says JCB Cab Systems’ General Manager David Carver. “Our focus is on building a plant that supports the company’s

78

global growth plans and enables us to work far more efficiently. “A weld automation facility destined for the new factory is currently being trialled at Rugeley. In addition, a computercontrolled production line, fullyautomated painting process, and other high-tech features will ensure we have the most advanced cab facility in the world. A phased programme of moving production to the new site will be implemented from July onwards.”

needed, benefitting customers as they only pay for what they use. Axtell’s 90 vehicle fleet also includes 15 tippers, seven grab trucks and three concrete pumps. Completing the fleet are the wheel loaders that are used to load the volumetric mixers with 4.0 – 20 mm stone and sharp sand. At the beginning of 2018, Axtell hired a Komatsu WA380-8 wheel loader for its Southampton site and was impressed with the machine’s stability and quality which led the company to purchase its own machine in April 2018. With the assistance of Carl Woollaston, MarubeniKomatsu’s product manager for wheel loaders, Axtell was

able to determine the correct machine specification to suit their primary application on site.

Cost effective alternative to skips & suction wagons

The WA380-8 is also equipped with an RDS technology on board weighing system which ensures the volumetric mixers pass compliance requirements by weighing no more than 38.4 tonnes when they leave site. The system works by having the mixer’s current weight entered and then informs the operator once the wheel loader has tipped the remaining weight into the truck. This makes the entire process more efficient and ultimately saves time by removing the likelihood of over or under loading the trucks.

Water Treatment Solutions

“As our truck drivers also load their own trucks, we require machines with perfect stability that offer easy operation and that’s exactly what Komatsu wheel loaders provide,” says Andrew Axtell, Director of Axtell. “Both the specialist bucket and on-board weighing system ensure the process of loading the volumetric trucks is highly efficient and easy.”

10 BLUE DIGGERS Luton based infrastructure specialists, PBHM Contractors Ltd. invest in the best with x10 #trueblue Kobelco excavators from Molson Group.

Established in 2006, this fastgrowing business headed up by Harry Nijjar, PBHM have built up a strong reputation as family business that deliver to a high standard on infrastructure projects throughout London, Cambridge, Oxfordshire, Swindon and Gatwick areas. With a recent expansion to an office in Birmingham, in addition to their head office in Luton, this really is a business that is growing.

strongest machines available in the 8t excavator class. Alongside the SK75SR-3, it is one of two options available in this class from Kobelco. Unlike the SK75SR-3 which features a mono-boom configuration, the SK85MSR-3 has an offset boom configuration which allows operators to swing the boom up to 62° to the left and 67° to the right. This allows operators to dig to the side, parallel with the tracks without moving the machine.

The latest machines to be taken by PBHM are a Kobelco SK85MSR-3 and Kobelco SK140SRLC-5. The Kobelco SK85MSR-3 is widely considered as one of the

The SK85MSR-3 also offers a reach more comparable to machines found in the 14t category rather than its competitors in the 8t class. With a maximum digging reach of 7,500mm and a maximum vertical dig depth of 3,860mm it really does punch above its weight. This enormous reach does not come with the down turn in performance that many would expect. Thanks to the fully Tier 4f compliant Isuzu 4-cylinder engine that kicks out 42Kw of power, along with its finely tuned two variable displacement pumps and one gear pump, operators will certainly not be left wanting more when they pull on the leavers. Even on the toughest

With their fleet now including a wide range of the Kobelco excavators that would be the envy of many groundworks’ contractors; ranging from the compact and reliable SK28SR-6 to the powerful SK140SRLC-5, this fleet oozes of quality that is synonymous with the Kobelco brand.

of applications, the Kobelco SK85MSR-3 has proved to be a capable and reliable machine. As with all of the Kobelco range, simplicity is the key. Features that will have every other manufacturer scratching their head, wondering why they didn’t think of it first are littered across this SK85. For example, Kobelco’s unique integrated Noise and Dust reduction (iNDr) system which offers two primary benefits: 1. Reducing engine noise, both inside and outside the machine to provide a safer working environment. 2. Reducing the amount of dust that enters the engine bay via air intakes that could potentially cause reliability issues. The way that Kobelco have achieved these is the impressively simple part… The level of noise is

reduced by simply raising the air intakes and outlets for the cooling system as well as lowering the engine bay. This simple change ensures that the engine noise soundwaves are held in the noise insulated engine bay for longer, therefor quieter when they exit. The dust reduction is achieved by yet another simple, yet effective solution. The addition of a metal

mesh pre-filter that catches any leaves, dust or other debris before they enter the engine bay and a Super-Fine air filter. The mesh filter is easily removed and cleaned as part of the operator’s daily checks and the Super-Fine filter has a 1000hour replacement cycle, so these cost-effective solutions will help ensure issues such as overheating are a thing of the past. Harry Nijjar, PBHM Owner said; “All of our operators are very happy with the Kobelco excavators. They find the cabs very spacious and well laid out. The operator feedback is a key reason why I keep coming back for more Kobelco’s. It is hard to get good operators, so keeping them happy is very important to my business. Tristan and all the team at Molson have also been excellent whenever called upon. From finding the right finance package to reacting to service requirements, they have never let me down”.

ADVERTORIAL

Tristan Dorey, Molson Sales Manager said; “Harry and his team are great to work with. They see the value of Kobelco, not just in the fuel savings they are already seeing, but also the low running costs and high residual value. In addition, they also see the benefit that Molson as a Group can offer. From financing their machine to having the scale to deliver on promises, we will always do whatever we can to help a customer along their journey”.

TW Services Select Rubble Master RM 90GO! from Red Knight 6 Ltd TW Services, one of the leading waste management companies in Kent, has purchased a RM 90GO! impact crusher from Red Knight 6 Ltd (RK6) the UK supplier for Rubble Master. TW Services, founded in 1995, cover all aspects of commercial and domestic waste management and the new RM 90GO! is part of their continued investment in the commercial arm of their business.

Dan Flack, Sales Director for RK6 added: “The RM 90GO! is a versatile machine, easy to manoeuvre, quick to set up and able to handle a variety of materials, it’s a fantastic impact crusher. It’s that flexibility that impressed TW Services and we’re hopeful this will be the start of a great relationship between the two companies.”

ADVERTORIAL

Spencer Ray, one of the founders of TW Services commented: “We’ve been looking at an impact crusher to increase the materials we can process. After an extensive on-site demo the RM 90GO! was producing

high quality product and easily processing asphalt and concrete amongst other materials. The machine has enabled us to maximise the 10mm and 20mm stone we needed. We had worked with RK6 before, and we’ve been impressed by the team, and of course the machine.”
