INSITE Only the Lonely

I have long since accepted that I shall never win a Nobel Prize for Literature. I have resigned myself to never being nominated for a Man Booker Prize or any other literary award for that matter. So instead of chasing dreams of overnight fame 30 years in the making, I content myself with attempting to capture the zeitgeist in this little industry of ours; holding a mirror up to the demolition sector and its countless facets and flaws. The words, video and – more recently – audio that we produce appeals to a very narrow band of people. I am about as likely to go viral as West Ham United are to be crowned champions of Europe. Yet, as I write this, a bit of audio that we produced is finding a surprisingly large audience both within and without the demolition business. What is remarkable is the fact that the subject discussed is generally NOT discussed. And that issue is mental health within the demolition and construction sector. As an industry, demolition has made huge strides in the physical wellbeing of its workers. Man has been moved further and further from the workface; hard hats and safety boots are now an accepted part of daily demolition life; and safety glasses and other forms of personal protective equipment are the order of the day on all but the most primitive and poorly run sites. So, having ensured the physical safety of the men and women working on site, surely the time has now come to take care of their mental health too? That was basically the gist of the audio podcast we produced recently. It drew on personal experience of mental health issues, and it was aimed squarely at the demolition business, so I was expecting for the episode to prove popular in a limited way. But I had not allowed for the fact that the Mates in Mind charity might pick it up and share it with their members and followers across social media. Now I could claim that the unexpected popularity of that show owed everything to the tightness of the script; to the carefully crafted prose; to the diction and oration skills of the narrator. But I would be lying. The truth is that this episode took off because mental health issues are all-too-rarely discussed, even though suicide is the biggest killer of men aged under 45. More than 75 percent of all UK suicides are committed by men. And, despite some positive moves towards gender equality, demolition remains a largely male industry. We’ve now produced more than 120 episodes of Demolition News Radio, and we have amassed an audience of over 11,000 listeners. If you listen to just one episode, we strongly recommend that you listen to this one. It is called The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Demolition Worker, and you can find it here: https://tinyurl.com/ y78ouxdy

Aerial View Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles look set to will revolutionise the demolition and construction industry. Steve Mansour, CEO of industry warranty expert CRL looks at the likely impact of these advanced devices.

The introduction of drones is a positive development in our industry. It might sound farfetched, but thanks to their flexibility, these small and sophisticated devices could soon be as common onsite as trucks and excavators. A report by Goldman Sachs makes it clear that the largest expected take-up for commercial drones is in construction, primarily in surveying and mapping sites. It estimates that total global spending on drones in the commercial market will be $100 billion over the next two years. Of that, approximately $11.2 billion will be generated by the construction industry. Such sizeable growth is evidence that business leaders no longer view drones as mere hightech toys. In fact, they have many commercial applications: builders seeking an edge on their competitors, land developers

wanting to save time during site surveys, and inspectors examining hard-to-reach areas. Getting an aerial view of a building or development is now easier and cheaper than ever. Construction sites around the world depend on inspections and surveys to gain a comprehensive understanding of a build’s progress, and to ensure that safety standards are being met in the process. With cutting-edge drone technology, operators can now easily and quickly perform inspections in a cost-effective and efficient way, whilst also keeping employees away from dangerous environments. Contractor GallifordTry, is one of the pioneers. It conducted an initial analysis of the roof of an old school building before its conversion into a modern care home. In under an hour, they captured a set of highresolution images of the entire roof structure, from the comfort of their office. The high-quality information collected by drones can give users the opportunity to view a site in real-time as it progresses, to better manage resources and keep projects on schedule. Additionally, drone technology will give those in the industry the ability to view a project without having to step foot onsite. By closely monitoring and analysing this up-to-date imagery and data, construction projects will save time and money. In addition, drones can improve communication and

stuff collaboration between different parties, onsite and offsite, to enhance planning as a site grows. With this in mind, it’s likely drones will further revolutionise construction through the use of 3D modelling, reducing the amount of time taken to design, analyse and maintain a structure or implement changes. This data can be imported into Business Information Modelling (BIM) packages in various file formats, making the integration of digital data into workflow processes straightforward. The advent of drones is also causing an increase in security efficiency, whether they are used to maintain the safety of employees or to protect the job site from theft or vandalism. Drones have the ability to create a round-the-clock, real-time monitoring system, greatly elevating onsite security, whilst minimising health and safety risks. What does the future hold? Whilst the potential for drones is high, there are still some factors making people cautious about their impending adoption. One imminent challenge is the regulatory environment in which drones operate. The industry’s rapid growth has outpaced the development of rules and systems to govern their use, and the resultant uncertainty has slowed commercial adoption and innovation. Regulators in the UK and US have recently relaxed regulation to make drone flights easier. However, restrictions still significantly limit their commercial uses, with bans on drones flying near buildings or

people, and the requirement for pilots to keep them lower than 120 metres and in their line of sight.

ensure relevant processes are compliant, the long-term gains far outweigh any short-term hurdles.

In the UK, the Department for Transport’s forthcoming ‘Drone Bill’ will propose new safety features, such as registering drones weighing over 250 grams. However, restrictions on where and how drones can be flown will need to be adapted before their commercial potential can be fully explored.

Drone adoption is set to grow in the future, and at CRL we’re certain there is much more to see with regard to the development of new products and technological innovations. These improvements will make drones fly faster for longer, whilst enhancing safety. The real benefits will come from enhancements to the drone itself, with sensors and the use of predictive data analytics to analyse real-time information through machine learning and algorithms.

The forthcoming bill follows newly-proposed rules from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). These seek to create a regulatory environment to foster the development of all civil unmanned aircraft systems. Whilst these rules will create a new framework that should ensure consistent safety standards for drones, clarity is needed around restrictions before the use of drones is commonplace on the construction site. As with any regulatory introduction, organisations will have to adapt. Whilst this could mean more work is needed to

6

The construction industry is evolving rapidly, and with all the innovations and changes to traditional methods comes the need for greater efficiency in all aspects of business. Drones will be a major disruptor in the near future. Early and effective implementation of the technology will give forwardthinking companies a significant edge in a very competitive market.

O’Donovan Drives Safety O’Donovan Waste Disposal has achieved another milestone by becoming the first dedicated waste company to receive the ISO 39001 certification from BSI, which evaluates the management system of road safety and that seeks to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries from traffic accidents.

Having already achieved ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and BH OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety), O’Donovan was extremely keen to achieve the certification that sits well alongside its huge focus on road safety that includes the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) gold status which they have achieved for the seventh consecutive year and its status as a Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) Champion. To achieve the ISO 39001 certification, the company enhanced its comprehensive safety system, demonstrating its cohesive processes in each of its operations, whilst refining objectives and action plans that fulfil the requirements specified by the standard. The ISO 39001 certification concentrates on a management framework focused on enhancing all areas of road traffic safety. O’Donovan has set road safety goals and objectives, aimed at improving the already high standards set, which is now reinforced by the accomplishment of the ISO 39001

certification. All this, with the purpose of building on their well-established culture of safe and healthy environments, which already exceeds best practice recommendations. “I am absolutely thrilled that we, as a family run business, are the first dedicated waste management company to achieve the ISO 39001 certification from BSI in road safety,” says Managing Director, Jacqueline O’Donovan. “This reaffirms our commitment to the welfare and safety of all road users as well as our own drivers, demonstrating our efforts to ensure our operations not only comply but surpass the statutory regulations.” Pietro Foschi, Group Assurance Director at BSI said: “Road traffic safety lies at the core of a wide range of business activities – for example maintaining an organization’s reputation, protecting income and revenue opportunity, managing business risk and conducting a business responsibly. By achieving certification to ISO 39001, it demonstrates O’Donovan Waste is committed to the safety and welfare of both its employees and the general public by taking a structured, evidence-based and holistic approach towards its road-traffic safety management.”

Simplifying Asbestos Disposal Waste disposal giant Biffa has announced plans to further extend ‘safe and simple’ Asbestos disposal offer across UK sites. The company has been granted permission from the Environmental Agency to grow its national asbestos disposal network from 4 to 10 dedicated waste transfer stations, with plans to extend this to 12 by this summer. Sites in Eastleigh, Hull, West Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham and Edinburgh will now be able to offer support to local businesses with the haulage and disposal of asbestos. Businesses that regularly deal with the removal of the hazardous material in those areas will have access to the

fully compliant service offer, including specialist exchange vehicles and depot based, ADRlicensed drivers, which can assist in the safe storage and removal of bonded and fibrous forms of asbestos waste. All waste collected will be double-bagged with the correct signage and stored in locked skip containers at the transfer stations, in line with the latest HSE and Environment Agency hazardous waste legislation. “We are very excited to be able to provide even more regions with our safe and simple asbestos offers, providing even

10

more options for companies who regularly deal with the hazardous material,” says George Pearce, I&C Commercial Development Manager at Biffa. “Biffa aims to deliver a national infrastructure to businesses in these new areas, allowing for an expert-led opportunity to compliantly tackle asbestos waste which they collect, which they previously may have not have access to. All materials will be stored safely at our transfer sites in compliant and locked container, which will then be disposed of correctly at licensed disposal sites.”

Having a Blast EPC-UK, a market leader in the manufacture, storage and distribution of commercial explosives, will be “bringing the blast to life” at this year’s Hillhead, thanks to the latest Augmented Reality technology.

A combination of Virtual Reality and the real world, Augmented Reality (AR) takes the form of live video imagery, which is enhanced with computer generated graphics, immersing the user in a specific environment – for example in a quarry whilst a blast is being conducted. The stateof-the-art technology also adds labels, captions and other helpful overlays to the user’s view, making it an ideal teaching tool. “Augmented Reality is a way of placing a person in a situation they would not normally be able to experience. By bringing it to Hillhead, we hope to engage visitors within the quarrying

12

environment and get a true feel for what we do,” explains Ben Williams, Managing Director of EPC-UK. “However, AR is not just for entertainment. It has a number of practical applications, the most important of which is training. Within our industry it is extremely difficult to realistically recreate certain scenarios, from both an economical and safety standpoint. However, AR is changing this. It is enabling us to take learning out of the classroom and into the quarry – virtually. There are limitations, but AR will allow students to learn at their own pace, giving

stuff them the ability to rewind training videos to help aid the retention of information.” Alongside the AR demonstrations, EPC-UK will also be showcasing its innovative EPC-Metrics service. Launched last year, the service, developed in partnership with Datum Monitoring Services, aims to facilitate the immediate access of event data, via state-of-theart fixed monitoring stations, removing the need to travel to and from a monitoring location, and the time-consuming manual download of results in the field. The advanced monitoring stations incorporate a GSM modem for wireless data transmission, together with the

option for solar power, enabling the service to be used even in the most remote of locations. “We have been successfully providing traditional blast monitoring services for a while, but EPC-Metrics takes this offering to another level,” Williams continues. “A fixed monitoring location provides a consistent point of reference for reliable results, whilst the realtime transmission of data saves our customers both time and resources as they no longer have to produce this information on site. The service offers users a more efficient way of monitoring blast vibration and air overpressure, aiding the tracking of compliance and providing a greater understanding of site characteristics.”

EPC-UK will also be announcing a series of new training programmes, from ‘Environmental Management in Blasting’ and ‘Geology for Blasting’ to ‘Managing the Blast Site’ and ‘Explosives Legislations for Senior Managers’. These industry leading courses have been specifically designed for the industry, encouraging continuous professional development within the sector and attracting new talent. “Our industry is constantly evolving and, as such, so are we. We have already moved away from playing a purely manufacturing role to becoming a full-service provider and our investment in innovative technology, such as AR, is a demonstration of this.”

Birth of a Demolition Company Demolition magazine will be following a new company as it places its site boots on the very bottom rung of the demolition ladder. And you can watch and listen to their progress too. Mark Anthony reports. There comes a time in a man’s life when he is forced to accept the passage of time; to set aside childish things; and to convert his pie-in-the-sky list of things to accomplish by the age of 40 into a rather more urgent bucket list of things to accomplish before he dies.

This is something I have discussed with countless start-up companies over the years. But each time, my grand plans have stalled and foundered. Until now.

not the ideal starting point in the formation of a demolition company (and I say this as a man who cut his journalistic teeth on a magazine that covered the hotel and restaurant business).

Just a few months ago, I took a call from a company that was

And yet that is where the b-line story begins.

I have long since accepted that I am highly unlikely to score a winning goal for West Ham United. I am aware that time is running out for me to become an overnight success. And I have even resigned myself to the fact that the chances of me eloping with Gemma Arterton are looking just a bit shaky (her loss, I say). Professionally, however, there is an ambition I have clung onto for about as long as I can remember. That ambition was to find a fledgling demolition company and to follow their progress for the first year, or possibly more. To share with them the highs and lows and the often brutal realities of life in the demolition industry. To see that company take on and train new staff, acquire new equipment, and to take their place in this industry of ours.

“I originally trained as a carpenter,” recalls operations director Ziad Mir. “In 2005, I was redeveloping a property and this allowed me to build a small building team specialising in refurbishment and loft conversions. But in 2011, the recession caught up with us and the work dried up. So I made the decision to get myself a degree in construction management.”

just starting out and which was willing to allow me to follow and share their journey. That company is called b-line. And this is their story. Unusual Beginnings On the face of it, a background in carpentry, property development and staff recruitment is perhaps

16

It was here that he met Lado Lleshi and the two would soon find themselves working together. “The company had a labour supply division that was supplying staff to major contractors across London. Through that division, we started to see a growing demand in the field of diamond drilling,” he recalls. “Both Lado and I decided that diamond drilling was an interesting niche. So we

How risky is your contract? It is commonplace for construction and demolition contracts to be large and cumbersome documents, prepared using unhelpful and complicated language with the sole purpose of one party gaining an advantage over the other. In our experience, many companies do not have the time or resource to properly review the contract that they have been presented with and in order to not miss out on the project, agree to those terms without fully understanding their rights and obligations.

Contract Review Service Flint Bishop regularly carries out contract reviews for its clients. By instructing Flint Bishop our

clients are not only freeing themselves up to focus on other matters/projects, they are obtaining a full understanding of the risks involved in that particular contract and can then if they choose to, negotiate with their client to mitigate that risk. stuff hand-picked the best men from our labour supply division and we set about establishing our own diamond drilling arm.” Mir reports that much of the diamond drilling work carried out by that division was heavy duty, complex and often allied to major civil engineering projects. As a result, the company’s reputation soon grew. But neither Mir nor Lleshi were satisfied. “We both believe that if you stick with just one thing, you will come unstuck,” Mir continues. “We were working increasingly closely with the demolition industry. We had a pool of staff with demolition site experience. And so we decided to continue our expansion and diversification by forming a dedicated demolition division.” There was just one thing standing in their way. They needed an experienced demolition man to head up this new division. One who could rally the already experienced staff into a real demolition workforce with the training and expertise to allow them to win and carry out work in their own right. Man who would be King Simon King has spent the past 18 years in the demolition business, working for his brother-in-law Mark Taylor at Metro Deconstruction Services. “Mark was really good to me,” King says. “He gave me a huge amount of training. I wouldn’t be where I am today otherwise.” Like a good many of the industry’s finest, he started as a labourer and soon progressed to be a machine operator,

site manager and ultimately contracts manager. Although he readily admits that he was sad to leave the “family firm” behind, he was keen to find a new challenge; a challenge in which he could truly extend himself. He had interviews with several big name London demolition companies. But the opportunity offered at b-line was too good to resist. “b-line has the funding and they were willing to give me the autonomy I wanted,” he

explains. “Obviously, I have to deliver results in terms of new contracts. But Ziad and Lado have basically granted me a blank canvas. So long as I can show a profit, they are willing to back me.” Neither King nor Mir are under any illusions about the challenges that lie ahead. B-line’s demolition division is taking on a mature and saturated market that doesn’t take kindly to interlopers and gate-crashers of any kind. There is a huge gulf between working alongside demolition and working IN demolition. And

18

winning work with practically no previous track record will not be easy. But that is not the greatest challenge facing this fledgling company. Greatest Challenge According to Simon King, the greatest challenge facing b-line at present is assembling a team of CCDO-accredited workers with the skills and experience to tackle precisely the kind of principal contractor-type work he is currently seeking. “The guys in our diamond drilling division are already demolition aware and have an excellent grounding in site procedures and health and safety. But getting them CCDO accredited is the next big step,” he asserts. “In an ideal world, I would like b-line to establish its own training department so we could train the men in-house. But, through no fault of our own, that is not proving particularly easy at the present.” Not that this is standing in his way. King is already deep into tendering mode and – at the time of writing – is close to securing the first contract for the dedicated demolition division of b-line; even if that means subcontracting certain elements of the works. “Starting small and doing a job well has been the key to the success of the other b-line divisions,” Ziad Mir. “And that is the approach we will be taking in demolition.” Fresh Perspective What the company currently lacks in direct experience, it more than makes up

And Ziad Mir believes that rather than hampering the new division’s development, the lack of direct demolition experience might actually work in their favour.

Starting a demolition division is unquestionably a risk. But I firmly believe it is going to pay off.”

That will need to be the case if Simon King is to achieve his lofty ambitions. “I have 22 years left

For pretty much as long as I can remember, I have had an unfulfilled wish. My unfulfilled wish has long been to chart the birth and the growth of a fledgling demolition company taking its first tentative steps in this tough, challenging and occasionally brutal sector of ours. Over the years, I have discussed this idea with several start-up firms. When push came to shove, however, none of them were willing or able to see the idea through to fruition. But a few months ago, I received a phone call from an acquaintance who told me that he had been hired to head-up the dedicated division of a company that was already operating in close proximity to the demolition field. We chatted about my idea of following a firm’s first year in demolition in print, audio and video formats; about how I wanted to report on the highs and lows of that first year; about how – in effect – I wanted to create the demolition industry’s first true reality TV and radio show. And much to my surprise and my delight, they agreed. Now I normally work with the written word where I have a beginning, a middle and an end. In this instance, I have neither a middle, nor an end. As it stands today, I barely have a beginning. I am currently planning to revisit the company in question on a monthly basis. But even that is in the lap of the Gods. If there is a new development

in the demolition industry until I hit retirement age. By the time I retire, I want b-line to be massive,” he concludes. “I want to have a turnover of £30 million to £40 million. I want b-line to be recognised as the one-stop contractor that companies want to work with. And I want my legacy to go on.”

within the company within the next few days or the next few weeks, we will be on hand to report upon it. So yes, in short, we’re winging it. I have no idea quite where this story might take us; nor do I know quite how long it might take. I am setting out with the intention of charting the company’s first year. But if there is sufficient interest, I’d love to follow them for longer. Of course, there is the very real possibility that the formation of a demolition division might prove too challenging. It’s also possible that the regular presence of cameras and audio equipment might prove too intrusive. In that case, the show will end when the company in question calls a halt. But I am hoping that will not be the case. I am hoping that we will be following a company for which the numerous highs will outweigh the inevitable lows. I am hoping that we can reflect upon the many challenges within this industry through the prism of a new company that is not encumbered with the baggage of tradition and convention; a company that can forge its own path and stake its claim among the industry elite. Most of all, I am hoping that we can educate, inform and entertain. I want to show a side of demolition that will be familiar to those within the industry; and a side that is totally unfamiliar to those without.

An Eye Towards Safety Despite the widespread use of personal protective equipment (PPE), demolition workers continue to suffer from eye injuries. But these can be avoided and prevented by the selection of the right safety wear. Specialists NothingButSafetyGlasses. com offers some timely advice.

Of the roughly 2,000 people that suffer eye injuries each day, around one in 10 will miss one or more workdays due to this injury according to Helathandsafetyhub.co.uk. But with the right eye protection, the majority of these injuries could be prevented; reducing time away from work and increasing the employee’s wellbeing at work. We would always recommend using safety glasses as part of a well thought out risk analysis and from that providing a suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) policy devised for the workplace of the employee(s). There are a variety of options out there to protect the eyes and face. These include safety glasses, goggles, hybrid glasses, over specs and face shields: • Safety Goggles - In the typical demolition environment, there will be falling materials such as debris, hazardous materials and maybe even the potential for fire and sparks. To protect your eyesight in such environments you should look for safety goggles that can be worn with a half mask respirator. They should protect against strong chemicals, airborne particles and mechanical equipment at work. Either sealed or vented goggles would be advisable to use depending on the environment. Make sure that they have the right ratings for this kind of protection on the manufacturer’s information. The Bolle Blast goggles are great when working with hazardous materials. They are impact resistant and have anti-fog protection. They will also fit over existing eyewear if required. • Full Face Shield - If there is the potential for flying particles or chemical splashes in the working environment the use of a face shield to protect the full facial area would be advisable. This can be worn over either existing glasses or safety glasses for added protection. However, they won’t always fit over a full goggle. You may need to use hybrid safety glasses or goggles that fit underneath the face shield. • Hybrid Safety Glasses - Useful when there are changing hazards in the area. The user would then be able to move from a traditional glasses style to use the glasses like a goggle. A good example of these is the Bolle Cobra goggles and glasses. stuff Bolle Cobra safety glasses can be replaced with the side arms to make them into glasses. • Safety Glasses - Wraparound styles and different tints such as smoke tint are available. Therefore your safety glasses have great UV protection and can be useful when working outdoors in bright light. Some safety glasses provide protection against UVC rays as well as the normal UVA/UVB protection. These Bolle Contour glasses are a good example of a smoke lens that is good for working outdoors and protects against UVA, UVB and UVC light. Typically different lens coatings can be used to stop the eyewear from fogging or scratching easily. These Bolle Slam glasses are a good example of an ESP coating. These glasses can be worn indoors and outdoors and have the effect of reducing dazzle and harmful blue light. • Prescription Safety Glasses - Custom made to order for the employee’s prescription. Therefore these couldn’t be used by more than one employee. They come in single vision, bifocal, varifocal lenses and a variety of special coatings

including tints, polarised and photochromic lenses. They can be worn under most full goggles. Over Safety Glasses - Good for visitors and VIPs in the workplace and can be worn over existing eyewear.

Some other considerations when choosing the correct eyewear include what they are made from. Most safety glasses are made of polycarbonate. Due to its strength and ability to protect eyes from UV light. The fit and comfort of the glasses should be right for the level of use that they will be required for. There are three levels of optical class. Optical class 1 being the best meaning the eyewear can be worn all day long without any distortion in vision. It’s also useful to have some kind of lanyard or strap for the glasses so they can be removed but kept close to hand for when next needed. Born of Frustration Andy Hopkins of Rye Demolition has created a new mobile app to helps marry those producing “waste” materials and those wanting to buy them. Mark Anthony gets his hands on The Waste Exchange.

Business is all about supply and demand. One person has something that someone else wants and that they’re willing to pay for. Regardless of whether that payment is in the form of barter, cash or the transfer or intangible Bitcoin currency, that is pretty much the basis of commerce. And that has been just fine and dandy for centuries of brick and mortar-based businesses and – more recently – ecommerce companies supplying goods and services from one fixed location to another. But what if the supply element of the supply and

demand equation is transient and doesn’t stick to a single location? What if the demand part of the equation doesn’t want or need those products for 51 weeks of the year but then suddenly does? And what if there are economies to be had by both supplier and customer by sharing information and potentially sharing transport? Enter stage left The Waste Exchange; a new mobile app developed to smooth the process of removing materials from a demolition site; finding a local buyer willing to take those materials; and – potentially – optimising the way in which those materials are collected and delivered too.

stuff The new app is the brainchild of Rye Demolition’s Andy Hopkins; and it has the potential to revolutionise the way in which materials such as crushed concrete are traded. WEX Algorithm Although he – somewhat annoyingly - doesn’t look it, Andy Hopkins is rapidly approaching retirement age having spent his working life in the demolition arena. And he has used that experience – and many of the frustrations that go with it – to develop The Waste Exchange app.

Power in your Palm There is much to admire about the Waste Exchange app, not least the fact that by creating an app, Andy Hopkins has placed the immense power of the system in the palm of your hand. The navigation around the app is sleek and well-designed; and the interface can be learned quickly even by someone with sausage-fingers like me.

According to the company’s informative promotional video, The Waste Exchange (that’s WEX for short) is “for companies that generate waste and companies that collect it.”

And although it is early days, traffic will come, I am sure, as the system rolls out to encompass more buyers and sellers. It needs to. Not only does the success of the app hinge upon attracting sufficient buyers and sellers to really achieve its aim of becoming a true exchange, those buyers and sellers will help fund further and future development of the app.

So let’s say you’re a housebuilder and you’re looking for some crushed fill material. You punch into the app the material you’re looking for together with a distance you’re willing to travel to collect it.

The app will ultimately charge £1 per transaction from both the buyer AND the seller. That’s a small price to pay given the potential savings on offer and the volume of development that has gone into developing the app in the first place.

The WEX algorithm will then match your demand to the nearest supply, at which point you can use the app to contact the company selling the product you seek; to agree terms; and to organise payment.

Initially, this transaction charge will be covered by 10 free credits that are being given away to members as they sign up.

Alternatively, if you’re a demolition company with a stockpile or potential skip-loads of materials to remove from site, you can list those items for sale and the algorithm will marry your supply to a local demand.

The Waste Exchange is well thought out; the app is quick and easy to use; and even my initial reservations about a potentially complex system of credits was quickly overcome once I got to see the app in action. Go check it out. You can find out more about The Waste Exchange app in the latest episode of Demolition TV: https://tinyurl.com/yalsnwje

The system is pre-populated with just about every type of material you’re ever likely to want removed; and you can even specify the most appropriate form of transport to do the removal, whether it be by skip, roll-on-off or tipper. And it has the potential to be even smarter than that. Ask any transport manager worth his salt what his biggest frustration is, and he’ll likely tell you it is paying to move empty trucks from one place to another. The brain of the Waste Exchange app allows users to list the availability of transport too, potentially reducing or even eliminating the costly and environmentally-harmful movement of empty tippers and skip lorries.

Taking the Hassle out of Scrap A new website has been developed to help demolition companies find the best local outlet and the best price for their scrap metals. And it has been developed by a demolition man. Mark Anthony reports.

Most demolition companies have their preferred scrap dealer. In fact, there are some that appear to be joined at the hip with the companies that buy, collect and process the metals won from their demolition sites. But what if you’re working outside your normal operating area. What if you’re also working outside the radius of what your preferred scrap company considers an economically-viable operating territory. Back in the day, there was an easy if cumbersome fix to this

32

problem. Someone would be sent to the area in which this new contract had been won; and while they were there they would pay a visit to the reference section of the local public library where they would plough through volumes of Yellow Pages to find local scrap dealers along with local scaffolding firms, plant and tool hirers, site security providers and the like. In fact, if you have ever looked at a copy of the Yellow Pages in a local library and found half the pages missing, chances are that a demolition man or woman got there first.

stuff Those pages would be collated and some poor unfortunate soul would then have to spend hours, days or even weeks on the phone gathering prices and negotiating and confirming terms. Of course, much of that changed with the arrival of the Internet and – more specifically – the arrival of Google. Google did to the Yellow Pages what the Gutenberg printing press did to hand-written editions of the bible. Suddenly, the industry had access to local suppliers from the comfort of their own office. But, through no fault of its own, Google only partly solved the problem. Yes, you could find as many local scrap companies and plant hirers as your heart might desire; but you still had to pick up the phone or send an email to gather prices and to obtain firm and meaningful quotes. And it is a frustration with this outmoded and archaic way of doing business that prompted the creation of the ScrapsAway. co.uk website and service. On a High ScrapsAway.co.uk is the brainchild of Matthew High of Downwell Demolition. And what he is created is so simple and so easy to navigate that you have to wonder why no-one has thought of it before. In essence, ScrapsAway is a website into which you punch nothing more complicated than your postcode or the postcode of the site from which scrap has been generated. In an instant, the system presents you with a list of scrap companies within that area – It

is set to a 50 mile radius by default but you can filter it further. I know what you’re thinking. So far, so Google. This is just a search engine focused on the scrap industry, right? Well yes, and very much no. Yes, it works like a search engine to provide results. But having done so, it then allows you to do so much more. With a single mouse click, you can visit the profile of each of the scrap companies found within your area. And that profile page provides more detail than you could ever want. It contains the location, of course, but it also contains opening times, details of the types of metals they’re willing and able to take. If you scroll down the just a smidgeon further, you can find current prices that are being paid for copper, lead, aluminium, stainless steel and a host of other metals. And if you click on the Metals tab at the top of the page, you can compare those prices with the live prices being quoted by the London Metal Exchange.

34

Assuming one or more of the scrap companies meets your requirements, you can hit the Enquire button to be put in direct contact with the individual company. The site even has a TripAdvisor like social aspect to it, allowing users to rate each scrap company based on their own experience. Now the cynics among you are now wondering just how much of your hard-earned scrap money you will have to part with in order to make use of this service. And the answer in nothing. Creator Matthew High says that – in the fullness of time – he is planning to monetise his creation by selling advertising to the 600+ scrap companies featured, allowing them to enhance their profiles while making the service free to use. So fire up your web browser, and go take a look at ScrapsAway. co.uk now. And don’t worry if you’re on a mobile device – It works just as well there. ScrapsAway.co.uk is featured in the brands new episode of Demolition TV: https://tinyurl. com/ydze29n4

Barging Ahead

ON SITE R. Collard Ltd has gone old school to reduce the carbon footprint of a massive contract in Greenford in the London Borough of Ealing. Demolition magazine’s Mark Anthony took a day by the canal to find out more.

Although he is far too modest to admit it, Robert Collard is a pioneer. He pushes the waste minimisation and recycling envelope, a fact that sets him aside from many of his peers. Yet when faced with the prospect of demolishing some eight hectares of warehousing, found and five storey office blocks and a pair of concrete multi-storey car parks, Collard and his team chose to go “old school” in order to reduce vehicle movements in this busy part of London. Impenetrable and Industrial The London Borough of Ealing has targeted the creation of 2,000 new homes in an area known as Greenford Green. According to the local council: “Greenford Green presents a wonderful opportunity to revitalise two disused, impenetrable industrial sites, and to become a new focal point for the Greenford neighbourhood.” Those two sites are the former Sunblest bakery which ceased operations in 1997; and the former West London home of Glaxo SmithKline (GSK), the latter of which is being demolished by R. Collard Ltd ahead of redevelopment. That redevelopment will prepare the area for the future; but R. Collard Ltd is drawing upon the area’s past to facilitate a less disruptive approach that minimises disruption to local people and businesses. The Romans named the area ‘Green Fields near a Ford’, which later became Greenford Green. The Grand Union Canal was opened in 1810, which led to progressive development in the 20th century. The site north of the canal was the UK headquarters for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) from the 1930s, which employed around 3,000 people at its peak. From the year 2000, GSK gradually relocated to other sites and, by 2009, concluded its operation at Greenford, leaving behind a collection of four and five storey office blocks, extensive

37

ON SITE warehousing, and a pair of car parks. With one or two notable and listed exceptions, all of these are to be levelled. Machine & Man Power The GSK site is vast, stretching from the main road down to the very banks of the Grand Union Canal and beyond. During an extensive soft strip and asbestos removal phase, R. Collard Ltd had as many as 50 men working simultaneously to make ready for the following demolition works. Even with that work underway, the site remains a veritable hive of activity, with three teams working across the main site, on a second section across the road, and a third section on the opposite side of the canal. Although some of the equipment has now been removed, the site is equally busy with machinery too. There are wheel loaders, articulated dumptrucks, several excavators and a large crusher that is processing the arisings for use

when the construction phase begins. “We have everything from a 1.5 tonne mini digger to a 75 tonne Volvo excavator that we bought last year,” explains Robert Collard. “It is a big job requiring a lot of manpower and a lot of machine power.” Adding to that firepower is a 30 metre Volvo high reach that has been on site since October last year and that is still a long way from moving on. Not that the machine is unproductive. Far from it. But the nature of the construction has proved logistically challenging, accord to Collard. “Two of the larger office blocks were stood on a nine metre deep basement that would be unable to take the weight of the high reach,” he says. “So we are having to demolish a bit, access the basements and break them out to allow the high reach access. We are constantly demolishing, relocating and then demolishing some more.”

ON SITE That is not the only challenge facing R. Collard Ltd on this specific project. The entire perimeter of the site is marked with dust, vibration and noise monitors that continually transit their readings to the offices of the London Borough of Ealing for constant scrutiny and recording. And if that is a nod towards the environment, then the approach being taken for removing waste from the site is a full-blown bow. On the Waterfront The only materials permitted to leave the site via road are a small amount of wood and timber that is processed by R. Collard Ltd and resold as fuel for a power station; and asbestos. All other arisings leaving the site – to date around 2,000 tonnes – have left via the Grand Union Canal and a dedicated barge. “As part of the planning consent from the local authority, we agreed to minimise road vehicle movements as much as possible. And with the Grand Union Canal bisecting the site, that seemed like an obvious solution,” Collard concludes. “At the height of the works, we were filing the barge three times per week which represents a huge reduction in truck movements. It is great for our carbon footprint and has helped satisfy the specific environmental needs of the client and the local authority.” You can hear more about this project in Episode #108 of Demolition News Radio: https://tinyurl.com/ybtpndht. River City Minimises Dust A pioneer in industrial dust control has helped a US company contain fugitive dust emissions during the demolition of a 5-storey concrete parking deck in a densely populated area.

River City Demolition used a self-contained and mobile DustBoss® DB-60 Fusion® manufactured by BossTek to suppress airborne dust created by the jaw processor and falling debris. The result was adjustable wide-area control of airborne and surface dust that reduced the need for manned hoses and maintained the air quality needed to comply with regulations. From the outset, the planners realised that the downtown

42

location of the parking deck would require dust control beyond the conventional approach of manual spraying with a fire hose. “With occupied buildings on two sides and city streets on the other two, we wanted to find the best method available to suppress the demolition dust and prevent its migration,” says Operator/ Estimator Josh Runyon. “We knew our water trucks could help control surface dust on the ground, but our big concern was finding a way to address

ON SITE airborne dust, something that could knock down particles and keep them on-site.” Because of the location and confined space, River City crews decided to use a jaw processor to pulverize the concrete and take the parking decks down a section at a time. That helped avoid dust clouds from large sections falling at once, but Runyon stressed the need for containment when he spoke to BossTek Sales Manager Mike Lewis. “When Josh called us, we had a DustBoss® DB-60 FusionTM on hand, which is one of our larger designs that’s equipped with its own generator for locations without convenient access to power,” Lewis commented. With all components mounted on a road-worthy trailer, the

system gave River City crews the versatility to position the fan-driven unit wherever it was needed on a given day. The water source was a municipal hydrant located nearby, fed by a standard 2-inch (50.1 mm) hose. The DB-60 Fusion forces water through a circular stainless steel manifold with 30 atomizing spray nozzles, then launches millions of tiny droplets with a powerful 25 HP fan that produces 849.50 CMM of air flow. Atomized mist droplets of 50 to 200 microns in size are thrown out in a 60 metre cone at an adjustable 0 to 50° elevation angle, capturing airborne dust particles and dragging them to the ground. Unlike industrial sprinklers used for the same purpose, which can require 1,893 litres/minute or more of water, the DB-60 uses only 87 litres/minute.

44

Rather than have personnel handling hoses to suppress the dust, the single atomised misting unit delivers 5,834 square metres) of coverage, while using far less water than hoses and sprinklers, helping contractors avoid oversaturation and run-off. The unit is paired with a 45 KW gen set featuring a John Deere Tier III Flex engine with a 100-gallon fuel tank, allowing up to 24 hours of runtime. The efficient diesel engine delivers 480 Volts (60 Hz) with a full load current of 46 amps. At just 2.03 metres wide, the system can be placed virtually anywhere dust suppression is needed and adjusted based on changes in wind or work activity. The optional dosing pump is powered from the standard 120V electrical outlet

with a maximum of 250 PSI (17.23 BAR), depending on the inlet pressure. For use with a nonpotable water source, the Fusion can be equipped with a number of filter options.

Water sources can vary, and the unit requires a constant supply pressure of just 10 PSI (.069 BAR). Standard municipal water pressures are generally around 40-50 PSI (2.76-3.44 BAR). The water is delivered to the atomized misting unit through a hose with a cam-and-groove quick disconnect coupling leading to the booster pump. The pump adds approximately 150 PSI (10.34 BAR),

From the beginning, Runyon’s suspicions proved correct. “It was one of the dustiest projects I’ve ever worked on,” he concludes. “But the DustBoss did a great job. We could locate and aim it perfectly each day, and neighbours seemed pleased with the dust management. In fact, we didn’t receive a single dust-related complaint during the entire 2-1/2 months on the job.”

Rebuilding in Cornwall Following the demise of Cornish demolition firm DRS Demolition National in 2015, the area found itself with one less dedicated local contractor capable of taking on the complicated and skilful work of dismantling buildings in a safe and controlled manner.

However, Darren Shrigley - son of the former owner of DRS, Dave Shrigley - spotted a window of opportunity to put his stamp on an industry that he had grown up around and within which he cut his teeth in as a machine operator. “Pretty soon after the closure of my father’s business, I spotted that there was going to be a massive gap in the market down here in the South West for a demolition firm and with that in mind in the May of 2015 I formed DWS (Demolition South West Ltd). In early 2016 we won a contract to demolish the iconic Ponsmere Hotel in Perranporth, Cornwall. This job gave us a great start and involved the removal of asbestos, internally and externally, the complete soft strip of 80 bedrooms, bars and recreational rooms and the salvage of some 2000 m2 of timber floorboards,” Darren Shrigley says. “Of course to tackle this job I needed machinery, so

I got in touch with our friends at Molson Group, Jonathon Wilson and his son Tom who agreed to hire me a 20 tonne Hyundai hydraulic excavator. We hired the Hyundai for 5-6 weeks and I really liked the machine so decided to purchase it rather than hire it any longer as it’s dead money hiring for too long, to be honest this job was the catalyst we needed to kick start the fledgling business and we haven’t looked back since.” Shortly after the hotel job, the company won a contract to work for IMERYS the French-owned company who run the China Clay extraction business in Cornwall, a period of rapid expansion followed, and good money was earnt which has enabled the company to invest in more machines. The work with IMERYS has since snowballed and the company have a number of jobs on the go around the St Austell area.

ON SITE Managing Director Darren has been joined in the new business by a number of staff who were at the previous firm, namely Nick Southall, who takes on a similar role as Contracts Manager and James Loveridge has taken on the role of Health & Safety Manager. A number of the old boys on the ground and on the machines have returned, but they are also looking to invest in youth, by attracting ‘young blood’ to come into the industry, talking about this “We have been lucky to bring in some new lads who are good young operators whom I’ve known for some time and in return we are putting them through their training to get their tickets, at the end of the day like everyone else now we are finding it hard to source good quality experienced operators with so many older guys retiring and taking all that experience with them, so as a company we are really keen to bring on young local talent,” Shrigley continues. Interestingly enough a lot of these new lads are coming into the demolition industry from the waste recycling sector in Cornwall, looking for a new challenge. According to Darren Shrigley, they are finding the industry a refreshing change to recycling and in addition they already have good knowledge of separating materials for onward processing. The lads generally start on the smaller scale demolition projects while taller, or as Darren Shrigley puts it, ‘scary’ buildings are generally taken down by Darren and Nick themselves to a level where the less experienced lads can handle it safely. Perhaps unsurprisingly the machine fleet is now dominated by the Hyundai brand. The fleet ranges from a 3-tonne mini excavator up to a 40-tonne class 380LC-9A which has recently joined them. CR 80, eight tonners 14 and 21 tonne models complete the fleet line-up. “We do feel that people tend to buy from people and we like many others have built up a good working relationship with Molson’s, our local rep Tom Wilson looks after us very well and we have become good friends, he always offers us some cracking deals so we are very

happy with our preferred supplier,” Shrigley asserts. Some of the machines in the fleet are second hand units which have been refurbished, if required, to a very high standard by Molson. The latest addition is the 40-tonne class 380LC-9A model, which is working on a site in St Austell. The machine had been shot blasted and re-painted, new side impact skirts added where needed, demolition specification belly guards fitted, FOPS cab guard and full ‘fall from height’ boxing ring protection added. The Hyundai 380LC-9A has been teamed up with a Sandvik crusher which are both working on the site of an old China Clay drying works not far from the town of St Austell, work here has been ongoing for some two-years and initially saw the company taking down old sheds that covered the area. Some asbestos had to be dealt with first, this task was performed by sister company ASW Environmental Ltd, and the timber roof was stripped down for recycling. The 380LC-9A and a 220LC-9A are now engaged in dismantling some heavy duty concrete structures which will be fed through the crusher for re-use as hardcore. The whole area where this clay drying facility once stood will eventually be put back to farming land which will require landscaping to follow the contours of the hillside and surrounding land. The company are now on the lookout for another yard that will be home to the crusher when it’s not out on mobile duties. It will be the main focus for the new material processing facility and we would expect to see more recycling kit being added to the fleet as workload expands. “Our business has come a long way in a short period of time, in addition to the plant we are now running a couple of trucks with hook-loader’s and around half a dozen vans,” Darren Shrigley concludes. “Now going forward, I feel that the crusher would benefit from having a new wheeled loader to work with it, that will potentially be from the Hyundai stable and possibly another 40-tonne class excavator will join the fleet, it’s an exciting time for the business and I’m looking forward to pushing it on.”

SPOTLIGHT

New Name, New Focus

52

SPOTLIGHT Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony visited the current Hemel Hempstead premises of Epiroc and found a company basking in its new-found autonomy.

I can imagine no circumstances under which Coca-Cola would ever be called anything but Coca-Cola. Unforeseen disasters aside, Apple will always be called Apple. The name Google will likely appear above the door of the Google headquarters for all eternity, assuming the planet is not over-run by an alien life-force that has no need for Internet search. There is a lot of tosh talked about the subject of branding. But, the fact is that brands breed customer comfort and loyalty. While it is often as much about the people behind the brand, you only have to look at the demolition equipment market and certain companies’ faithful and devout adherence to certain brands to see the power of branding. So when I received a press release announcing that the attachments division of Atlas Copco was changing its name to Epiroc, I was surprised and perplexed in roughly equal measure. I shouldn’t have been. For one thing, the company has form in this field. When it acquired the Krupp breaker business back just after the turn of the Millennium, many branding experts would have advised Atlas Copco to maintain the Krupp name and that comforting and familiar blue colour. Atlas Copco didn’t; and it still went on to be the world’s dominant hydraulic breaker manufacturer. Secondly, while the Epiroc name (a mixture of epi, Greek for close or upon, and roc, an abbreviation of rocca, rock in Latin) might mean precious little to non-linguists outside the company, there is no question that this separation and autonomy has fired up the Epiroc team. Contagious Enthusiasm Nobody that knows Epiroc business line manager for hydraulic attachment tools Keith Lambourne would ever have accused him of “going through the motions”. Born

SPOTLIGHT and raised in a mining town in South Africa, Lambourne has been a part of the UK demolition industry for more years than he or I care to remember. He enjoyed a spell at IP Equipment back when Montabert breakers were still a common sight on UK demolition and quarry sites. More recently, he has been the name and the driving force behind the Atlas Copco breaker and attachment range. But this is a rejuvenated Keith Lambourne. He says it is a “blessing in disguise” to be unshackled from a huge organisation of which attachments were a relatively small part. I hope he won’t mind me saying as much but

while his hair hasn’t grown back miraculously overnight, he seems 15 or even 20 years younger. He has a new fire in his belly; his enthusiasm is contagious; and it is well-founded. The company produced an unprecedented 16,000 hydraulic breakers in 2017, and sales to date in 2018 are up by around 20 percent. At the time of my visit in May, 2018 sales of the larger HB Series breakers had already outstripped sales recorded during the whole of 2017. Even though the name above the door of the building in Hemel Hempstead where we meet still reads Atlas Copco, changes are already taking place to reflect the

new name and the new focus. New and improved products are coming on stream at an almost staggering rate; and new and highly experienced dealers have been appointed to better represent the brand and its new mission. And that is just the beginning. Demolition Covered Along with the smaller SB (solid body) and larger HB Series breakers, Epiroc offers a comprehensive range of hydraulic demolition tools and attachments. That range includes grans, pulverisers, shears, combi-cutters and magnets to cover just about every application and carrier weight imaginable. Perhaps slightly less

SPOTLIGHT well known is the CB (concrete buster) range that currently comprises four models suitable for carriers in the 2.0 to 35 tonne range. However, with at least one new model on the horizon, that range will extend to cover carriers up to 80 tonnes in the very near future. “We recently held a meeting at the breaker factory in Essen, Germany to discuss what products should be added to the portfolio,” Lambourne says. “And there are some very exciting developments on the horizon.”

Although such technology is available externally, it exists also within the mining division of the Epiroc group. “As a company, we already have considerable expertise in the field of remote monitoring and telematics. We have mining machines that operate autonomously and automatically,” Lambourne explains. “Demolition is a tough environment for electronics of this kind. But we are currently testing and trialling a system that would be suitable for the demolition environment so this is definitely on the cards.”

Among those developments – probably in the medium term – will likely be that addition of a tracking and telematics capability to provide attachment customers with greater protection against theft and to afford greater levels of remote monitoring, facilitating enhanced service and maintenance.

Premium Brand Of course, advanced telematics – like the heat treatment process that gives the Epiroc breakers their familiar toughness and durability – come at a price. And Keith Lambourne is unapologetic about the fact that Epiroc breakers and attachments occupy a place near the top

56

of the purchase cost league. He believes that demolition customers in particular recognise that there is more to that initial cost than mere purchase price. “Epiroc is a premium product, and demolition companies are generally willing to invest in a premium product. They understand that when you pay for a premium product, you are also getting a premium level of support and a premium residual price,” he insists. “There are plenty of cheaper attachments on the market, and many of them MIGHT do the job. But in demolition, when you wake up in the morning and head for work, you want the reassurance that your attachment WILL do the job.” Perhaps the greatest single challenge facing Keith Lambourne and his team is communicating that although the name is now Epiroc, the product, processes and support that made Atlas

SPOTLIGHT Copco a preferred brand among serious demolition contractors still remains. Based on my meeting, Lambourne and Epiroc is up to that challenge. Indeed, the switch from Atlas Copco to Epiroc is likely to be far smoother than the switch from the name Krupp to the name Atlas Copco. Don’t quote me; I have been wrong about these things in the past. But my guess is that by this time next year, the name Epiroc will be at the forefront of the minds of demolition contractors across the world. And Atlas Copco will be associated primarily with compressors.

The all new BROKK 200 defines a new weight class for demolition robots, filling the gap between the Brokk 170 and the Brokk 300. And it does so by squeezing the power of a 3,100 kg Brokk 280 into a 2,100 kg package, enabled by Brokk SmartPower technology. This 27.5 kW machine carries tools one weight class above its size and brings the hydraulic power to match it. Compared to its smaller sibling Brokk 170, the Brokk 200 comes with the new Brokk BHB 305 breaker that hits 40% harder and the new stronger Darda CC480. The Brokk 200 has 15 percent longer vertical and horizontal reach while retaining most of the compact dimensions of the Brokk 160. The extra chassis length and machine weight ensures excellent balance, even when wielding the heavier and more powerful attachments. All-in-all, the Brokk 200 represents the new standard in compact remote-controlled power – ideal for heavy duty but difficult-to-access projects and applications.

This eco-friendly five-ton machine comes with two diesel engine options: a Stage 4/Tier 4 Final Kohler unit meeting the new EU and North American emission standards, and a Kubota model available for the rest of the world.

Slightly longer than the Brokk 280 and weighing 500kg more, the Brokk 300 still retains the same width and height giving it access to the same confined work sites. A new arm system increases vertical and horizontal reach to an impressive 6.5 and 6.1 metres respectively. With impressive power, reach and stability, this model is destined to become another legend in the industry.

The new Brokk 520D is slightly heavier and longer than the old Brokk 400D, boasting a bigger BHB 705 breaker and a 250mm longer work reach. Its heavier-duty boom system and increased hydraulic performance means that it can handle the same wide range of heavier, more powerful attachments that are already available for the Brokk 500 released last year. KIT TALK will simplify daily maintenance and increase machine uptime. “The introduction of these four machines not only represents the biggest product launch in Brokk’s history, it also redefines what has been considered possible to achieve in terms of power-to-weight performance ratio for demolition robots. And this is all made possible by the unique new Brokk SmartPowerTM technology. It is truly exciting to be able to say that after 40 years, Brokk still has the ability to redefine the industry.” says Martin Krupicka, President and CEO of Brokk Group. These four new demolition robots from Brokk reflect the company’s constant focus on innovation, improved performance and increased uptime for customers around the world. Each and every one of these new models brings state of the art in power-toweight ratio and rugged reliability. Shipments of the new machines will begin in JuneAugust 2018.

SmartConcept With the launch of these four new models, Brokk introduces SmartConcept, a package of technological features that offer significant improvements in power management, reliability, maintainability, and ergonomics to the latest generation of machines. Brokk is the world leader in the design, manufacture and sale of remotecontrolled demolition machines, and SmartConcept, consisting of three areas of new technology – SmartPower, SmartDesign, and SmartRemote – represents a leap forward in performance and uptime across the board. SmartPower - Now available on all but two of the model range, combines power management software with custom-designed hardware to maximize the hydraulic power output of a given motor size while boosting reliability. For example, the power generated in the B260, the company’s former flagship 3.5 ton model, was a constant 24 kW. The next generation unit, the B280 with SmartPower, improved the output to just below 30 kW. The newly launched B300, with a new electric motor and SmartPower, boasts 36 kW of power, and means that the robot can accommodate a larger class of hammer on essentially the same size carrier. Better still, the integrated power management software automatically monitors the system and adjusts the motor speed to prevailing

63

temperature conditions. This means that the machines can operate continuously even in the harshest, hottest environments. In addition to the power management features, SmartPower includes completely redesigned electrical systems with 70 percent fewer cables and a reduction in connection points from 170 to about 50, and hardened components specifically designed to withstand the rigors of vibration and heat generated in demolition robots. Together, these improvements increase the overall life of the machine’s electrical and hydraulic components and guarantee greater uptime in real world conditions. SmartDesign - The new Brokk models include a number of deft design improvements put in place to extend the life of the machines and improve the operators’ day-to-day maintenance routines. All grease points are accessible from the outside, without removing any covers. LED headlights have special protections built in. Machine covers are formed steel, and hydraulic hoses are easily accessible for replacement – some have been redesigned to make them even easier to repair in the field. Practical design touches are everywhere: all Brokk machines can rotate 360 continuous degrees, but they can also operate ‘over the back’ and work unencumbered.

Marrying Brains with Brawn Tough and reliable probably springs prominently to mind when thinking about waste and recycling materials handling machines. But it takes brains as well as brawn to increase productivity, minimise downtime and promote health and safety on site. Take for example the JCB 560-80 Wastemaster telehandler, one of the models in the company’s Wastemaster range, which delivers a maximum of 8.1 metre in height, and a 6,000 kg load capacity at the front end (3,000 kg at full height). That is the brawn.

But it also has a clever side that promotes safety. This includes automotive inspired power brakes, which offer proportional braking throughout the pedal travel to improve braking and safe stopping. An operator presence switch makes accidental operation a thing of the past. This feature

KIT TALK prevents telehandler movement whenever drivers leave their seats. Meanwhile, Adaptive Load Control technology automatically controls hydraulic operation to help maintain the machine’s longitudinal stability. Waste and recycling sites are loud places at the best of times and technology can be kind to the ears of those working on the site. The hydraulic cooling fan on JCB’s 457 automatically reacts to ambient temperature and adjusts the loading shovel’s fan speed to optimise cooling, making it quieter as a result – as well as reducing fuel consumption, which is of course good for the environment and good for reducing operating costs. Fuel efficiency is a prime target for technology development. The net benefit scales up dramatically on waste and recycling sites where machines, in common with many off-highway vehicles, are left running whilst idle for much of their life. Improved fuel economy across a mixed fleet of equipment is just one result of new technology that has just been introduced to the Wastemaster range. The brand new version of JCB’s LiveLink telematics system enables mixed fleet operators to control all

of their plant and equipment with one network. LiveLink is used on over 160,000 JCB machines worldwide and boasts more than 70,000 logins per month. Its remote machine-monitoring benefits are now available to customers who also operate non-JCB equipment. The new JCB LiveLink Control Tower system allows fleet owners to seamlessly import fleet data from any telematics system compliant with the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) Telematics standard V1.2. All machine information – whether JCB or competitive equipment – can then be displayed and interpreted in one secure, intuitive web portal or integrated into a user’s own IT system. JCB will also provide several Developer Toolkit services to assist with integrating machine data into existing systems and rental or fleet management software. For those looking to bring all their equipment on to this fleet management portal, JCB dealers can retrospectively fit the JCB LiveLink Lite system to machines with no telematics device previously installed. LiveLink increases fuel economy by providing fleet managers with up-to-theminute fuel use data, including actual fuel consumption and fuel tank level. Other benefits include Enhanced Preventative Maintenance. Machine cautions, such as water in the fuel tank, can be sent to both the customer and to a local JCB dealer, where they can be monitored and used to signal the need for maintenance or a change of operation on site. LiveLink also offers Location Tracking and Geofencing. The constantly updated location system can alert the customer to unauthorised movement of the machine, preventing theft and alerting rental companies to continued use of equipment that has been off-hired. This can also lead to reduced insurance premiums. Ultimately, technology applied to waste and recycling machines results in benefits straight to the operator’s bottom line.

Generous glass surfaces improve visibility on all sides. All controls, such as the Liebherr control lever integrated into the driver’s seat as standard, are convenient to use. Working and driving functions are self-explanatory and can be learnt intuitively. These measures increase safety, particularly if several different machine operators work with the same wheel loaders. Additional clever solutions in the cab include the vent window that can be opened by 180 degrees and the height-adjustable display.

As with all Liebherr wheel loaders, the cooling system in the new stereoloaders is located directly behind the operator’s cab. This is the cleanest position on the wheel loader, reducing the level of dirt or dust. The on-demand cooling system in the L 507 and L 509 models draws in the air at the sides and guides it through the engine compartment. The engineers can therefore ensure consistent cooling performance and machine availability increases. Additional protective measures, such as a reversible fan drive, fluff screen and a coarse-meshed radiator grille, are available on request for particularly dust-intensive applications.

Epiroc Extends Combi Cutter Offering Epiroc has added two new models to its Combi Cutter range. Designed for carriers in the 20-30 and 25-40 tonne operating weight classes respectively, the CC 2300 and CC 3100 offer a productive combination of short cycle times, easy handling and simple maintenance. The CC 2300 and CC 3100 have all the well-known features that make attachments in the Combi Cutter range a popular choice for challenging tasks on demolition sites around the world. They are robust, multi-purpose machines offering lownoise, low vibration operation and suitable for practically any kind of primary demolition work. The cutting blades on all versions are replaceable and reversible and the attachments can be equipped with different sized jaws according to requirements.

The hydraulic drive gives 360° endless rotation, allowing precise handling and optimal positioning. If the cutter grips the material at an oblique angle a built-in pressure relief valve allows a “self acting movementâ€? that brings the cutter jaw into the ideal position. This valve effectively protects both the carrier and the cutter from potentially damaging reaction forces.

Like other attachments in the CC range, both the CC 2300 and the CC 3100 are available with two jaw versions, the Universal version (U) and the Steel cutting version (S). The Universal versions are ideal for light to medium duty building demolition and heavy duty industrial demolition involving heavily reinforced concrete. The Steel cutting versions are specifically designed for cutting steel profiles in general steel structures. Both versions are efficient tools for secondary reduction and material separation.

A modular design and the fact that the jaws are mounted on one central bearing pin allow the cutter jaws to be changed easily on-site. Thanks to the CAPS coupling and positioning system, the two jaws can quickly be removed and refitted as one unit. CAPS makes handling of the dismounted the jaws much easier as the two jaws remain connected even after they have been removed from the carrier. Refitting is simple using the special guide system supplied.

With the CC 2300 and the CC 3100 high productivity is ensured. The stable cutter body features two powerful hydraulic cylinders with integrated speed valves for minimum cycle times and, in turn, minimum fuel consumption. Fully protected by piston rod guards, the cylinders deliver virtually constant closing force which remains high even when the jaws are almost closed. Two jaws moving independently eliminate displacement forces on the cutter and the carrier, ensuring controlled demolition of unstable concrete walls, regardless of which jaw attacks the material first.

Komatsu’s Hybrid Progress

KIT TALK Komatsu Europe International used the Intermat exhibition in Paris to present the HB365LC/ NLC‐3, a high technology and environmentally sustainable 36 tonnes hydraulic hybrid excavator. The new HB365LC/NLC‐3 hybrid excavator features an EU Stage IV engine and ultra‐low noise levels, and it further reinforces Komatsu’s ongoing commitment towards a substantial reduction of the environmental impact of earthmoving machines. Komatsu Hybrid excavators strongly contribute to reduce Komatsu customers’ carbon footprint and environmental impact, with up to 40 percent less fuel consumption and emissions. The HB365LC/NLC‐3 has the same 202 kW SAA6D114E‐6 engine as the PC360LC‐11, with up to 53 kW extra electric power supplied by the revolutionary Komatsu Hybrid system. The kinetic energy generated during the swing‐braking phase is converted to electricity, which is sent through an inverter and captured by the Komatsu Ultra Capacitor. When accelerating under workload conditions the captured energy is discharged quickly for upper structure rotation and to assist the engine

KIT TALK as commanded by the hybrid controller. The reserve power stored by the hybrid technology represents additional horsepower that is available to maximize machine performance by supporting the engine, or is used for swing power. The highly durable Komatsu‐developed and manufactured hybrid components are covered by a “5 year or 10.000 hours” special warranty. All machine components and the EU Stage IV engine are optimally controlled to match the work at hand and are coordinated through Komatsu’s total vehicle control system to deliver exceptional fuel savings and a reduced carbon footprint with no compromise on machine performance. The HB365LC/NLC‐3 cab provides a comfortable and quiet work environment that helps operators maximise productivity. The proportional control joysticks, which are standard, allow precise operation of attachments with comfort and ease.

With its optimized engine control and fun‐clutch system, HB365LC/NLC‐3 achieves ultra‐low noise levels (100dB external / 68dB internal), lower even than on the HB215LC‐2. Komatsu Goes Large Marubeni-Komatsu has announced the launch of the new PC1250-11, a large hydraulic excavator with operating weights ranging from 115.9 tonnes to 118.3 tonnes. A Komatsu SAA6D170E-7 engine that provides 578 kW at 1.800 rpm is exempt from current EU emission regulations, but EU Stage V ready. It features two diesel particulate filters (DPF), with no need for a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.

Thanks to a large cross-sectional structure using high tensile steel with thick plate and partition walls, the boom and arm are long-lasting and resistant to bending and torsional stress. The undercarriage is strengthened, for excellent reliability and durability when working on rocky ground. Sturdy guards shield the travel motors and piping against damage.

“Komatsu has redefined industry standards with this new excavator” says Jo Monsieur, Product Manager at Komatsu Europe. “It not only combines great performance with excellent comfort, but also ensures that work can be performed safely, thanks to an impressive array of standard safety features”.

The PC1250-11 raises the bar when it comes to standard safety equipment. The operator’s cab conforms to OPG top guard level 2 (ISO 10262) for falling objects. It has a high shock-absorption capability, excellent impact resistance and an increased sound absorbing capability. Derived from mining excavators, a new hydraulicallyoperated 45° retractable stairway enables safe access to the machine. A standard “auto lock” function automatically interrupts all machine hydraulic functions if the stairway is not fully retracted.

Work modes include the well-known Power and Economy modes, and the PC1250-11 also benefits from the new “Power plus” (P+) mode, which allows the operator to make full use of the increased engine power to achieve up to 8 percent higher production than with a PC1250-8 in P mode. The Heavy lift and Swing Priority functions are still available, as on the previous model. A two-mode setting for the boom lets the operator choose between smooth operation for gathering material, and maximum power for more effective excavating. The shockless boom control makes operations smoother and reduces both stress on the machine and operator fatigue.

The Neutral Detection System will also activate the hydraulic “auto lock” if the work equipment control levers are not in the neutral position when the hydraulic lock lever is released. The “auto-lock” status is clearly displayed and easily reset on the monitor panel. Three emergency stop switches are provided,

pressurised and the high capacity air conditioner is standard.

For improved safety, KomVision is standard: 4 networked high definition cameras create a realtime bird’s-eye view on the machine monitor, to eliminate the blind spots on the rear and sides of the machine. The Komatsu PC1250-11 features industryleading comfort levels and easy maintenance. The low vibration cab, highly rigid with a damper mounting system and excellent noise absorption ability, is wider than on a middle-sized excavator. It includes a high back air-suspension heated seat with a reclining backrest: height and inclination are easily adjusted with a simple lever. The operational position of the armrest and console can also be customized. The cabin is

The interface of the large high resolution Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor was redesigned for quick and easy reading of necessary information. On the display, ECO guidance shows the status of the machine in real time. With a single touch, its menu enables you to check records for operation and Eco Guidance, as well as fuel consumption history, enabling total fuel usage to be reduced. A walkway provides easy access to inspection and maintenance points, which are grouped to facilitate engine and hydraulic component checks. A reversible fan helps easy radiator cleaning, an optional fast refuelling port on the right front deck can be accessed from ground level, and a standard battery disconnect switch allows a technician to interrupt the power supply before servicing the machine.

Work Tool Range

Caterpillar has expanded its range of excavator attachments with three new multi-processor models—MP332, MP345 and, MP365—which build on the company’s demolitiontechnology experience with new features aimed specifically at users requiring large, flexible, purpose-built tools that can handle virtually any demolition task. The new models join the MP318 and MP324 in the Cat multi-processor range. 86

KIT TALK The design of the new multiprocessors allows pairing a basic housing with any of up to six jaw sets, increasing jobsite versatility; the design also boosts productivity with patent-pending features, such as a new jaw locking system and the Speed Booster valve. The net result is optimum performance, coupled with low owning and operating costs. The new MP300 Series models are compact and designed with a high power to weight ratio, delivering exceptionally strong cutting and crushing power, while reducing stress on the carrier. Also, the housings used for the new tools incorporate a heavy-duty rotator that provides 360-degree movement for positioning the multi-processor at an optimum angle for any demolition situation.

wear parts. Many wear parts are pinned and can be easily and quickly replaced in the field, saving the time and expense of moving the jaw to the shop for cleaning, grinding, and welding new parts in place. Jaw configurations D, CC, and P benefit from parts commonality. In addition, jaw configuration P uses Cat ground engaging tools while D and CC use the same retention system as the Cat ground engaging tools. The design of the new models provides protection for hydraulic components and hoses, including housing the motor in the frame. The design also allows ready access to the cylinder, which features a well-protected rod. The number of greasing points has been reduced, compared with previous models, simplifying routine maintenance, which entails only greasing, checking for wear, and replacing worn parts. In addition, each jaw set has a standard transport system, which simplifies moving, storing, and positioning the jaw when making exchanges.

In operation, when the jaws meet resistance, the integral hydraulic booster valve automatically activates. The Speed-Booster system combines a “speed” and “booster” valve and can therefore use a smaller cylinder diameter (compared with previous models), which nearly halves cycle time for jaw opening and closing. In addition, depending on the jaw set used, closing force is up to 19 percent higher, compared with previous-series models. The configurations of the interchangeable jaw sets include: Concrete Cutter (CC); Demolition (D); Pulveriser (P); Shear (S); Universal (U); and Tank Shear (TS). The jaw sets are designed to be exchanged in as few as 10 minutes using only basic tools. Larger models feature a pin capture system that retains the cylinder pin with the jaw to further enable fast, safe jaw exchanges. Compared with previous designs, the jaw sets have fewer welds (fewer stress points) and more replaceable

KIT TALK Quick-Change Artist KINSHOFER has unveiled its latest generation Multi-Quick Processors that feature best-inclass cycle times, jaw changeout times and power-to-weight ratio.

Suitable for carriers in the 18 to 65 tonne operating weight range, the attachments allow demolition and recycling industry contractors to use one attachment with several jaw sets instead of buying several tools for different applications. Contractors can choose from six to eight jaw sets, depending on which of the four MQP models they choose,

90

including dedicated concrete, steel or tank jaws, as well as combination and specialty jaws. “We know that by enabling contractors to complete more jobs with fewer pieces of equipment, we boost their profitability and expand their businesses, said Francois Martin, KINSHOFER North America general manager.

KIT TALK “The KINSHOFER Multi-Quick Processor is the ultimate tool to do just that. Like all of our products, the Processor helps customers do more with less.” The new units feature the company’s DemaPower cylinder technology. The cylinder uses four chambers instead of the two found in other attachments, resulting in 20 percent more surface area within the cylinder. That allows the MQP to exert up to 25 percent more power from a smaller attachment, resulting in the best power-to-weight ratio in its size class. This means, for example, that a section of concrete that may take a

competitive attachment five or six “bites” to break through only takes the KINSHOFER MQP one or two. Higher power in a smaller tool also improves efficiency and performance in high-reach demolition, a practice that’s becoming more common in the U.S. This is both because contractors can use a smaller carrier with a higherpowered attachment and because the attachment’s light weight and superior cylinder technology improves fuel efficiency while the excavator arm is fully extended. KINSHOFER’s double-acting speed valves and innovative cylinder technology also gives

the MQP superior jaw closing and opening speed — cycle times as fast as 5 seconds. Competitive models use a single-acting speed valve that allows only for a fast opening speed or closing speed, not both. With attachment’s fast cycle times and high power, contractors can complete jobs as much as 20 percent faster, improving ROI. Contractors can change KINSHOFER MQP jaws faster, easier and more safely than competitive models thanks to the company’s DemaLink system. Operators only need to manually remove one pin from the attachment during

This not only removes the hassle of pounding out three pins, but also virtually eliminates the danger of the jaw falling and injuring a worker after the last pin is removed. In addition, DemaLink allows two people, or a single skilled operator, to switch out jaws in minutes and get back to work quickly. In comparison, competitive models often need to be taken to a shop and take hours to switch.

DemaGuide system, which uses a guide plate to provide additional stability at the pivot point. The extra stability means greater cutting efficiency and precision. The cylinder also features a trunnion design, ensuring compactness, a better centre of gravity and an optimal closing force curve. Once the shims show signs of wear, maintenance crews can adjust the jaw tolerance by simply tightening the main pin. The shims are replaceable in a few simple steps, including loosening the main pin nut, taking the main pin out and removing the jaw. This design also reduces the need for contractors to buy additional

and reduces the risk of the attachment shifting or rotating on its own, causing potentially dangerous situations. The MQP also includes a safety system that reduces the risk of dangerously high pressures within the rod cylinder. To reduce replacement costs and service downtime, KINSHOFER manufactures all wear parts for easy onsite replacements and exchanges across jaw types. In addition to offering exchangeable cutting edges, an industry standard, KINSHOFER features crusher attachment teeth that can be quickly replaced on site. Competitive units often require putting the attachment on a truck and taking it to a shop for teeth replacement, which can take four to five days. The teeth are also highly robust, especially compared to competitive exchangeable teeth. This ease of replacement combined with KINSHOFER’s performance-enhancing features delivers a low cost of ownership and fast ROI. Additionally, the company designs the tool’s oil distributor to include an extra channel to allow for water spray or grease systems.

KIT TALK Mercury rising South East London based Economic Skips’ commitment to supporting the need for a cleaner environment within the capital is backed by significant investment in the latest recycling systems. Its latest acquisition is the recently purchased JCB JS370 tracked excavator for operation at its Mercury Way site, near Bermondsey. This excavator supplied by local dealer Greenshields JCB, however, is equipped with a large finger grab, allowing it to carry out the initial processing of waste at the facility. This is the first time a JCB JS370 has been used in such an application. “Its ability to handle with the finger grab, its good visibility and its ability to cope in a dusty environment are key features for us,” says Chris

Guinnelly, Site Facility Manager at Economic Skips. “And the JS370 is a robust, compact and efficient machine.” Economic Skips has been providing professional waste management solutions for businesses in Greater London since the early 1970s. The operation at Mercury Way takes up to 120 skips a day from building sites mostly from around

on the radiator, the tracked excavator maintains high productivity. Its carefully thought-out design also helps to minimise downtime for Economic Skips, which carries out maintenance of its machines itself. “We find the JS370 is easy to maintain with easy access to all components,” says Guinnelly. Sitting at the top of JCB’s range of heavy tracked excavators, the JS370 weighs in at around 37 tonnes and is engineered with exceptional strength, productivity, efficiency, comfort, safety and ease of maintenance. A closed box-section revolving frame increases strength and reduces stress. It also makes these tracked excavators highly resistant to impact damage. The highly efficient MTU 210 kW engine is compliant with Tier 4 Final.

The first step of the process for the rubbish is getting the concrete out of it before sending the waste to the picking station. Material arriving from building sites often contains blocks and lumps of concrete. So for this novel application, the JS370 is fitted with a very large finger-type grab that allows the operator to pick out heavy items from the waste pile inside a large, high open-fronted building. With the JS370 sitting on top of the waste, the operator picks up a load of material with the finger grab, which allows the concrete to fall out through the grab’s fingers, making the residual waste easier to sort through.

It joins a fleet of existing JCBs working on Economic Skip’s site including a JS220 22 tonne tracked excavator, a JS175 wheeled excavator and a 437 wheeled loading shovel.

It’s a tough and highly dusty environment in which to work. However, fitted with a reverse fan

KIT TALK Hydradig’s Demolition Debut The versatility of JCB’s Hydradig has landed the machine a role in a demolition application in Coventry City Centre.

Purchased by Rugby-based French Contractors LLP, which is carrying out the project on behalf of Jackson Civil Engineering, the Hydradig 110W model is being used to assist in the strengthening and rebuilding of Swanswell Viaduct - situated between junctions one and four on the A4053 ring road which circles Coventry. It is maximising an array of attachments including a Powertilt tilting hitch, a full range of buckets and a set of pallet forks. It has also been equipped with a Northerntrack hydraulic concrete pulveriser to undertake the surgical removal of the bridge abutments. KIT TALK Operator Ian Ellery is equally enthusiastic. “The stable machine handles the pulveriser exceptionally well. We would have had to use a larger wheeled excavator if the Hydradig wasn’t available to us,” he says. “This would have meant a larger attachment, occupying more of the road and additional closures necessary. Quite simply, the JCB Hydradig has made this job far easier for everyone.” Powered by a fuel-efficient, low emission JCB EcoMAX 444 diesel engine, the 11.5-tonne Hydradig 110W can easily rotate its upper structure within a single highway lane. The machine’s all-wheel steer chassis provides a compact turning radius of less than four metres and the Hydradig can travel at up to 40 km/h where permitted, for rapid relocation on site.

Working in the tight confines of lane closures, the compact dimensions of the JCB Hydradig come to the fore. Thanks to the TAB boom and a rear over-hang of just 120 mm it is able to squeeze into the tight locations to remove the abutments and parapet walls with ease. “Being able to provide a solution that exceeds our customer’s requirements has long been a part of the offering here at French Contractors. Our ability to undertake specialist applications has always helped us stand out for our clients. The JCB Hydradig does just that - bolstering our fleet and bringing a versatile dimension to operations – whether that be through mobility, excavating, materials handling or proving hugely capable in a demolition application too,” says French Contractors LLP Partner David French. “It’s manoeuvrability and visibility are also very helpful on confined jobs such as this one.”

From its Rugby headquarters, family business French Contractors LLP serves Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Lutterworth, Northampton and Warwick with a comprehensive plant hire service. Offering operated or self-drive hire, available same day – equipment is backed by 24/7 emergency support. The company’s predominantly JCB fleet includes: mini excavators, wheeled and tracked excavators, backhoe loaders, rollers, breakers, kerb grabbers, forward and swivel-tip dumpers, compactor plates and auger bits.

The R 946 is designed for minimal downtime and greater profitability. “We bought our first Liebherr, an R 954 crawler excavator, back in 2007 and over the past 11 years have used it on a wide range of projects. The machine’s performance has been second to none: it has stood up to everything we could possibly throw at it. With minimal repairs it is still going strong, which is why we have purchased another Liebherr: the R 946 crawler excavator with straight boom. After running the R 946 for a trouble-free 12 months, we have made it a company policy that all new machines from 30 tonnes upwards will wear the Liebherr badge.” Howard Stott, Howard Stott Demolition Ltd. ADVERTORIAL J.W HINCHLIFFE LTD J.W Hinchliffe Ltd is a family company founded in the 1850’s. As different generations of Hinchliffe took the helm, the company has traded successfully in a number of different fields from scrap metal merchants to asbestos removal contacting and oil tank decommissioning. With a vast array of mills and factories in the Yorkshire and Lancashire areas being transformed through the 60’s and 70’s, machinery and boiler plant removal was forming a large part of the dismantling work carried out by the company. But along side these boilers, stood large oil storage tanks, which needed a specialist contractor to safely dispose of them. It was here that Henry Hinchliffe developed many of the methods still adopted today when decommissioning fuel and oil tanks. With the advent of the supermarket petrol station in the mid 1970’s, a market began to emerge for the safe cleaning and removal of fuel tanks from redundant forecourts, as independent retailers struggled to compete with the draw of supermarket petrol.

Following over two decades of successfully cleaning and decommissioning a vast array of fuel and oil tanks, the ‘Tanks’ arm of J W Hinchliffe Ltd was born in 1996. John Hinchliffe has now become the seventh generation of Hinchliffe to steer the company from it’s base in Kirkstall, Leeds. The company offers services to industrial, commercial and domestic customers, with clients ranging from demolition contractors, local authorities and utility providers, through to the armed services and independent petroleum retailers,
