John Carroll University President, Rev. Fr. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., announced that the University has recently received the prestigious honor of being named a North Coast 99 Winner. This title recognizes JCU as one of the 99 best employers in Northeast Ohio. It is determined by the Employers Resource Council, which developed the award in 1999. North Coast 99 is an annual recognition that honors 99 great workplaces in Northeast Ohio. The program consists of an application that collects information on organizational practices and performance and an event that celebrates Northeast Ohio’s workplaces for top talent. In a recent statement to the campus, Niehoff said, “The faculty and staff at John Carroll are such an engaging and collaborative community of dedicated professionals. Their commitment to our students has truly helped distinguish JCU as an outstanding place to work for our employees and an exemplary place to learn for our students.”

Carroll Faith Community Kick Off The kick-off for Carroll Faith Communities is Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Underground. Head Coach Mike Moran huddles with his team before a big game during the 2015 basketball season. Men’s head basketball coach Mike Moran will be inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 15, 2016. He has been the head basketball coach for the past 24 years and is the “winningest” coach in JCU history with 443 wins. He will be entering this fall into his 25th and final season. In order to be inducted into the hall of fame, nominees had to be raised in the Greater Cleveland area or moved to the Greater Cleveland area to become a resident. Nominees must be retired from their sport for at least three years or, if they are still active, they must have competed at a high intensity level for at least 12 years. The induction represents men and women who have made an impact in the Cleveland area’s athletic reputation. Moran grew up in the East Side of Cleveland and went to Cleveland St. Joseph’s High School where he played basketball and football. He then attended Xavier University where he majored in marketing, with a minor in math and a concentration in teaching. Moran attended Xavier on a football scholarship. When asked why he didn’t continue playing basketball in college he said, laughing, “I probably couldn’t shoot the ball well enough or wasn’t tall enough.” Moran chose his coaching career because it was always a dream of his to eventually be a head coach. When his years at Xavier ended, Moran moved to Cincinnati and coached high school football and basketball, seeing as he had a love for both sports. Moran had connections to John Carroll University without even knowing it. He played football in high school with a former JCU football coach and was friends with a JCU wrestling coach as well. A few years after graduating from Xavier, Moran moved back to Cleveland. The head coach for the JCU men’s basketball team had just retired and the former football coach and wrestling coach encouraged him to apply for a coaching position at JCU. Moran was offered the job but worked his way up the coaching ladder to get where he is today. “I paid my dues. I was an assistant coach for years before head coach,” said Moran. “I climbed the ladder step by step. Especially nowadays, people try to aspire quickly and there is a lot to say about experience and working your way up the ladder.” The value of a dollar was very important to him. “You couldn’t be free as a butterfly back then,” said Moran. “I had a painting business. It wasn’t my main source of income, but it did help feed my family.” John Carroll felt like the perfect fit for Moran as he was always involved with private education. Between being a head coach at St. Joseph and John Carroll he has won 667 games. Moran holds the title of the longest serving head coach in JCU basketball history. More than 50 players who have played for Moran became coaches. Moran feels blessed for the great players he has and the outstanding coaching staff. “Recruitment was pretty easy for us,” said Moran. “I grew up in the area known by the Greater Cleveland association program and we had a pretty good network of coaches and students in the area.” Moran’s goal this upcoming season is to compete for the championship and get into the NCAA tournament. He feels that with the players he has this year, their goals are reachable. Moran has a good feeling about the upcoming season because the team doesn’t have a lot of egos. “On a team, if there is a kid that doesn’t want to share the ball or glory, he probably isn’t going to do well here at John Carroll,” said Moran. With six kids and 18 grandchildren, Moran compares his family to his basketball team. “John Carroll was great for me because I have a big family, and the team is kind of like the Moran family,” he said. “Our 12 players will beat your five players.” Moran is also the coach of the golf team at Carroll and is planning to continue that after his time is up as the men’s head basketball coach at the end of this year’s season. “This time in my life I need to step back and look at the whole picture, the beauty of the game and coaching,” said Moran. “Hopefully we can put an exclamation mark at the end of the season.”
