JCU splits at Bob Baptista Invitational Blue Streaks fall short in western travels Darrell Lane

Tournament play in the early parts of the season rarely bring national headlined matches, but the Bob Baptista Invitational served just the opposite. John Carroll University men’s soccer was a featured opponent in the two-day tournament held in Wheaton, ILL. The Blue and Gold capped the weekend off with a 1-01 record after JCU trounced hosts Wheaton College (IL) Thunder in a 3-1 decision and drew a 1-1 tie with Elmhurst College. Wheaton College offered the most noticeable resume for the visiting Blue Streaks. A No. 7 national ranking, 26 NCAA Division III national tournament appearances, six national semi-final appearances and two NCAA Division III National Championships headline the Thunder. JCU would look past that resume in a 3-1 victory over the Thunder in what was the first meeting between the two programs since 2001. Three first half goals set the Blue Streaks with enough fire power to hold a 3-1 victory over the hosts. Freshman midfielder Harden Parente started the scoring in 9th minute after he fired home the opening tally. Sophomore midfielder Eric Roszits was

credited with the assist in what was Parente’s first collegiate goal. Insurance would be added by Parente in the 19th minute, marking the second goal of the game for the freshman. Junior midfielder Jake Lombardo would finish the deed with a goal in the 34th minute. A shot from the top of the 18-yard box was slotted in the side netting to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 lead to take into half time. Sophomore goalkeeper Liam McIntosh had three pivotal saves to keep the reeling Wheaton Thunder from gaining any sort of momentum. McIntosh finished with three saves on the evening while the JCU defense allowed just three shots on goal from the starting 11 presented by the Thunder. The second feature of the two-game road trip pinned Elmhust and John Carroll together. Parente was the offensive catalyst for the Blue and Gold again, but this time on the assisting end of business. Freshman midfielder Justin Paalman notched his first goal of his collegiate career when he slotted a loose ball home in the 32nd meeting after a Parente corner. Elmhurst would score the equalizer in the 68th minute, evening the game for the full 90 minutes. The draw with Elmhurst puts the Blue Streaks to a 2-1-1 record on the year.

The John Carroll University women’s soccer team was in three states in three days, starting the trip off in Crestview Hills, Kentucky for a meeting with nationally ranked Thomas More College, later traveling to Indiana to take on Hanover College. No. 9 ranked Thomas More struck first in the 17th minute when Erika LaRosa headed home the first goal of the match. Both teams traded scoring opportunities to close off the half with Thomas More testing the JCU defense often. The hosts recorded eight shots to John Carroll’s one. The second half turned the scoring fortunes for JCU when senior Andrea Regrut drilled a 30-yard stunner in the 46th minute to put JCU on the score sheet. Regrut’s tally was preserved from a JCU defense that did not allow a goal for the remainder of the half. Two overtime periods failed to provide a winning tally. Junior goalkeeper Rhianna Guarnera recorded two saves in extra time in route to a career high 12 saves in the contest. Senior and captain Andrea Regrut gave the nationally ranked side praise but said it was a good challenge for the young Blue Streaks, saying, “We were all excited to play such a

great team. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we also knew that it would be great competition which would only make us better.” JCU went on to wrap up weekend play when the squad traveled to Indiana for a meeting with Hanover College. In what was the hosts’ home opener, JCU dropped a 0-2 decision. Hanover came into the match up 0-2 on the season, losing to the number two team in the nation, Washington and Hope College. The Blue Streaks struggled offensively in the first half, only attempting two shots. Hanover capitalized in the 32nd minute when senior Anna Cornacchione slotted a penalty kick. Cornacchione would add a second goal in the 56th minute to secure the victory for the Panthers. The Blue Streaks had nine shots in the second half but failed to get past senior goalkeeper Karlee VanDerWeele. JCU dropped the game 0-2 to move to 1-3-1 on the year. After the long weekend, Regrut reflected on the importance of a veteran presence with this young Blue and Gold side saying, “ with such a young core being a good portion of the team, it is important to have an upperclassman set a good example on and off the field.”
