Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour Kicks Off 2016 Season in Style
In the next bracket, we had Leslie Bernardi winning matches against new player Lori Burgesen, Sher Ahola, and new player Audrey Lambert. She would face Emilyn Callado who had won games against Denise Domingo, Naomi Manuel, and Lindsey Dorn. By the end of Saturday evening, these were the matches on winner side: Leslie Bernardi vs Emilyn Callado Eleanor Callado vs Revelina Um. On the one loss side, Olga Azarova, who lost her first match against Mary Dughi, got a bye, then defeated Ginger Bowen, Naomi Manuel, and Shanon McHone, earning a spot on top 8 for her first time. Sher Ahola lost her first match against Leslie Bernardi, then worked through the one‐loss side, defeating Martha Zanetis, Darnell Domingo, and Mary Dughi to set up a match against Olga.

TWCWT kicked off their 2016 season the weekend of May 21‐22. Sponsor Karen Markulis, her daughter, Rachel, and her staff took care of the 30 players who showed up to compete. The Tour added 8 new players to their roster, played a fun combined race of 8‐ball (race to 2) and 9‐ball (race to 3) and updated the group with the latest tour information. Our Tournament Director, Kevin Li, explained the transition to our new tour, the North American Pool Tour (NAPT), and the upcoming regional opportunities for players interested. The rest of the committee members all shared about their roles: Eleanor Callado – The Financial Director/Website creation/live stream. Emilyn Callado ‐ New player contact, Tiger Buck incentive program, public relations Cony Mendoza ‐ Tour coordinator/OTB articles/marketing and coordination of fliers (designed by Annette Woods).
In the next one‐loss bracket, we had Janna Sue Nelson winning matches against Lori Burgesen, Noel Campos, and Lindsey Dorn. Denise Domingo would defeat Meadow Klingler, Gloria Lee and Andrew Lambert to face Janna on day 2. The one loss the matches for Sunday were: Janna Sue vs Dee Domingo Olga Azarova vs Sher Ahola On the one loss side, Dee Domingo won against Janna Sue and lost against Revelina Um on a very close game. Emilyn Callado defeated Sher Ahola and faced Revelina, who defeated Emilyn and Leslie to meet Eleanor in the finals. Eleanor Callado showed a little of everything: Great shot making, accurate position play, well‐executed safeties, some bad rolls and some good luck. She was victorious, with a 2‐1, 3‐1 final score in the Kick off event for 2016.

The July Edition of Win Jim’s Money Tournament at the Cue Ball in Salem was held on the Saturday the 11th. We had a summertime crowd of 32 participants fighting for their share of the $520 prize fund. Kris Derby came out zeroed in on the pocket and won his way to the point. In the loser’s bracket, tournament regulars slugged it out. Sheldon Lebow faced off for the 4th place prize of $50 with Joseph Farmer. Farmer must’ve had to wait too long, as his game left him out. In the cold. In the rain. In the Dark. Lebow prevailed 5 games to 1. Farmer wasn’t happy, but he went home with $50. Lebow then met up with Linn Petty, both of whom

have experienced success in this event. Petty had given Randy Baker a beat down to face off with Lebow. Sheldon Lebow, the Dad of Adam Lebow, 13, who had placed 4th in June’s Tourney. In one of the closer matches of the day, Petty took the hill game to win the match and face off with Kris Derby. Derby, as is usual for the point, had sat for quite a while waiting for the loser’s bracket to shake out. His match with Petty was a 6 – 4 race with Petty having to win 6 to force a playoff. Derby started out a little week, making several unforced errors to allow Petty to gain some momentum. They traded win streaks till
the match stood at 3 – 3. Derby, on the hill, had some breathing room with Petty having to win 3 more to take the match. Petty had been playing pretty steady throughout the afternoon, but wore down in the last match. The rolls started going in Derby’s favor and then Petty made an unforced error, rattling the 9 Ball in the corner and leaving Derby the duck to take the match. Derby happily took advantage and claimed his prize. 1st Place and $ 200. Petty accepted his 2nd place finish and $120 prize graciously. Our next tournament is Saturday, August 13, 2016. Liz Cole Back on Top of the NWPA
Pictured l-r: Ford, Lize Cole, Linda Carter The NWPA’s fourth stop of the 2016 season was hosted by Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA June 25-26th. The tournament was run on 8 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crowns tables with Rail2Rail Productions providing a free live stream all weekend. The NWPA tour is sanctioned by the NAPT. All skill levels are welcome to play to work towards their semiprofessional status while gaining experience playing some of the top women players in the northwest. Standings and 2016 schedule are available at nwpatour.com. The main event was $500 added, while a Second Chance tournament was available to ladies not making it to the second day. We would like to thank our 2016 sponsors. Essentially, just for signing up, you are entered into a free drawing for cool prizes. Eighteen players came out on Saturday morning for the NWPA’s first 10-Ball event. The format was a race to 7/6, BCA rules, alternating break. The field was whittled down to the final 6 players for Sunday match play. Sunday matches began on the B side at 10am, Cassie Francois vs. Linda Carter and Melissa Rushton vs. Fran Johnson. Linda defeated Cassie 6-2, while Fran advanced over Melissa 6-5. The next round included the hot seat match: Liz Cole vs. Suzanne Smith and the 4th place match – Linda vs. Fran. Both players fought hard, but Liz was not to be denied and she defeated Suzanne 7-4, while Linda shut out Fran

to advance (pay back for a first round loss). In the semifinal, Linda continued to capitalize on errors by her opponent, defeating Suzanne 6-3 to play in her first NWPA final in several years. The final was one race to 9, alternating break. Liz came out firing and ended up building an 8-0 lead before Linda could get on the board. Liz won the event, only allowing Linda 2 racks in the set. Great tournament ladies!! With Liz’s finish, she moved up to first place in overall standings. Our next event is August 13-14 at The Parlor in Bellevue and will be a qualifier for the next NAPT event in Chicago. VAN BOENING Claims 2nd US 10-Ball Championship TITLE Shane Van Boening of South Dakota did what he did best Thursday at the US Open 10-Ball Championship at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino — break with consistency; pocket balls with deadly accuracy; and place the cue ball with precision. And so Van Boening was able to pocket a second US Open 10-Ball Championship, and the $10,000 prize that accompanied a silver cup.

Van Boening’s tournament started strong, with wins over Chad Sholders, 10-4; Tommy Tokoph, 10-7; Georgi Georgiev, 10-5; Amar Kang, 10-6, and Sky Woodward, 10-5, before being bested by runner-up Rodney Morris in the hot seat match, 10-7. Morris forced Van Boening to the loser’s side of the bracket where he beat Canadian John Morra 10-6, to ensure himself a spot in the finals and another shot at Morris.

Several challenge matches are also scheduled, including the Pick Your Poison Challenge, which has Hohmann facing Van Boening, in a race to 21, 8-ball; the Tiger Challenge, where legend Francisco Bustamante will take on Rodney ‘The Rocket’ Morris in a race to 21 in 10-ball; and the OB Challenge, which features Justin Bergman of Fairview Heights, Il. against Corey Deuel of San Leandro, Calif.
The finals match remained close until the score was tied at eight games each, when Van Boening broke and ran the rack to move ahead in the single race-to-13 final match. Van Boening capitalized when Morris made mistakes and played solidly to capture every game until he pocketed the final 10 ball and the championship title.

This 2016 US Open 8-Ball Championships became a Dakotas Duel Monday when Shane Van Boening, ‘The South Dakota Kid’ met Rory Hendrickson, of Fargo, N.D., in the finals of the prestigious tournament. The men have known each other for years, and the mutual respect was apparent as the match got underway with a handshake and smiles before the lag. Then things got serious on the table as Van Boening and Hendrickson, the house professional at Fargo Billiards, went to work. Van Boening is undisputedly one of the best players in the U.S. and, therefore, expected to grind through a tough field to make it to the finals of a tournament. But after losing in the first round, 7-9, to Taylor Anderson, Van Boening had to take the long road to the finals. He posted wins over: Steve Register, 9-2; Kyle Pepin, 9-1; Greg Harada Jr., 9-4; Chris McDaniel, 9-5; Shane McMinn, 9-5; Thorsten Hohmann, 9-6; Francisco Bustamante, 9-8; Amar Kang, 9-8; Josh Roberts, 9-6; and Jesse Bowman, 9-4. Pros in every sport continuously return to their fundamentals. Many of our troubles seem to arise from the gradual decay of our fundamentals. Whatever our old habits were, they tend to return. We often make little adjustments to our form, our equipment, or our routines, and we forget to consider how each change relates to the bigger picture of what we’re trying to accomplish. Further, we don’t always remember to notice whether the changes we made are actually helping. This came home to me recently when I made an equipment change and failed to notice the effects. I changed my contact lenses, optimizing them a bit more for distance, since I was hitting golf balls further than I could see (unfortunately, not because I’m a great golfer). Five or six weeks went by, and my pool game was way off. I hadn’t had a slump this long in many years. Then one day, I was hitting a pool shot and realized I was not seeing the balls clearly. I had been seeing them poorly ever since I changed the contacts, but I just hadn’t consciously noticed. I went back and got contacts optimized for pool distances, and immediately got my game back.
tasks, we have to make an effort. For example, to determine how close to straight-in a shot is, we have to put our body on the line through the balls, move our head side to side a little to get a 3D perspective, and perhaps bend down to get closer to the table surface. It takes more than a glance. If we get lazy and line up without making the necessary and appropriate effort, we may have time to consider the error of our ways while we’re in the chair hoping to get back to the table. Think about when you’re in the zone, playing your best. How are you seeing? What are you seeing? I’ll bet you’re using your eyes quite well, making the effort, bothering to focus, clearly and consciously seeing what you’re seeing. The difference is that when you’re in the zone, it doesn’t seem like effort. You’re totally focused and you simply do the right things. You’re fully in the moment, seeing, feeling, doing. On the other hand, I’m wagering that most of the time, most of us are not even fully focusing our eyes when we’re down on a shot. As we get older, it can take a couple of seconds to fully focus on the cueball and a couple more seconds to then bring the object ball into full focus. Even worse, I believe a good percentage of players “black out” during their hit stroke. They aren’t focused on the vital physical aspects of their game. Instead, they’re focused internally, on distractions such as fear of missing, self-consciousness, trying to look good, and so on.
The moral of the story is that we really do have to check ourselves out, especially when we’re in a slump. Something has changed somewhere, and change is not automatically for the better. In my case, and I suspect, for many of us, we’re often not seeing what we’re looking at. We’re running on habit and not bothering to really focus hard on what we’re doing.
What are you actually seeing during the hit moment? What are you aware of? Take some shots and see what you’re seeing. To be focused enough to consciously see during the hit, you have to be focused before the hit. And that’s what we’re really after.
Let’s talk about how we use our vision in pool. We rely on our eyesight to judge distances, spatial relationships, gaps, angles, and alignments. For most of these

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. A Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.
The “Over and Under” shot is pretty dated and you all may think it is a mere “crowdpleaser”. The truth of the matter is that the principle this shot is based on is extremely useful in all cue games as it may help you score a point or find position. It comes up with certain frequency especially playing rotation games such as 9- and 10-Ball, 3-cushion billiards and, of course, it becomes of vital importance to be able to execute it for artistic pool and billiards players. This is the most popular version which we dress up by laying a bridge across the table at the first diamonds from the short rail, as shown in the diagram. We can also use a regular cue and place a couple of chalk cubes under its ferrule. The bridge’s head leaning on the right long rail offers enough clearance for a ball to pass under it. Place your Object Ball (in this case the Yellow Ball) with its front edge even with the cue/ bridge and about two balls away from the long rail. Then place your CB at about one-ball distance from the short rail so that the line of centers between the OB and the CB (the blue dotted line) aims slightly to the right of the right tip of pocket A. Place the second OB (the Red Ball) hanging by pocket B. While you aim the Yellow Ball to make it into pocket A, elevate your cue by 20⁰-25⁰. I use an elevated close bridge meaning that the palm of my bridge hand is off the rail which I touch only with my middle, ring and pinkie fingers while my thumb and index finger loop around the shaft. Hit the CB with a 2-tip, 6 o’clock and speed-3 stroke. Don’t hold back or poke the CB. Just follow through knowing that the tip of your cue will slide on the cloth without damaging it due to the moderate elevation of the cue. The CB will take off slightly but enough to be propped up by the Yellow Ball which will become its “ramp ball”. While the yellow OB travels towards pocket A, the CB jumps over the hurdle, lands several inches past it and then the back spin grabs and drives the CB backwards, under the bridge to make the red OB A into pocket B. The principle this shot teaches is the “delayed draw”. When we learn how to make the CB jump slightly after hitting an OB by using bottom English on it, we can drive it forward up to 10-12 inches before it actually puts in the rear gear likely curving around a ball which might be in the way for scoring a point or for finding good position for the next shot. To be absolutely sure not to damage the cloth while practicing this shot, consider my patented “CLOTH SHIELDS” advertised in this fine magazine.

Recently there was a challenge match between Darren Appleton and Earl Strickland at 10 ball. The corner pockets on the special table were extra-tough at 4 1/4 inches but the side pockets were super-tough. There were no side pockets; it was a four-pocket table. Evidently that made the table a little too tough. In the 104 games of the match there was only one break-and-run, which was posted by Appleton.
off the 8 and into pocket X. Instead you end up at E. With a double-bank of the 7 to pocket Y you try to leave a straight-in on the 8 ball to the corner Z and a safe if you miss. You make the 7 but leave just a little too much angle on the 8 to avoid the scratch. Your final trick is to shoot very softly at the 8 and roll the cue ball against the facing of pocket X to get the safety and the corner hook.
I like side pockets and not just because they make it easier for me to run a few balls. There are lots of little tricks they make possible and if you know what to do in the tricky situations you have an advantage. Here is a rack of nine ball that uses several of them.

Unfortunately, you mis-aim and don’t hit the 3 at all, leaving the cue ball at B. Fortunately there is a bank shot available -- the 3 can be made on a one-rail bank to pocket X. The shot looks like a sure double kiss, but a trick gets you out of the kiss. If you hit the 3 halffull on the right side it drives into the cushion right by the side pocket opening. There it encounters the stiff facing of the pocket which is a thin layer of hard rubber that takes the punishment when a ball hits the pockethard. That facing can straighten the bank out and it amazingly goes straight in the other side. This “impossible” bank works only for a small range of positions of the 3 ball, so you are going to have to experiment with that. On some tables the cue ball may need to be a little closer to the center of the table to avoid the kiss -- that depends on how hard the facing is and how soft the cushion rubber. Try it and see. You get the 3 bank and the 4 in and you leave the cue ball at C. The 5 ball is frozen to the corner of the pocket just far enough away from the pocket that it looks impossible. It’s actually easy. Just ignore the corner and shoot straight at the ball from C and draw straight back for the 6 ball. The corner compresses some and lets the ball pass for a hard stroke. From the 6 you hope to leave the cue ball at D to play the 7 on another kiss shot

Your opponent has broken dry and leaves an impossible-looking runout. The first problem is the 3 ball by the side pocket. It’s edge is just slightly sticking into the pocket opening and it’s frozen to the cushion. The first technique to try is to move it with the 2 ball. You play the 1 and leave the cue ball at A which is just about perfect to play the 2 off the 3 and into the side. You have to hit the 3 thin enough you don’t get a double kiss but thick enough to move it into a makeable position.

UNWANTED VARIABLES Pool is a complex game to master because the technical aspects of the game are not simple to execute subconsciously. However, the more you can reduce the variables, the simpler the game of pool becomes, and the easier it is to play the game with a positive attitude. In fact, most beginners try to figure out things on their own. Some are too proud to seek help and it’s that kind of spirit that often leaves them playing pool at the same “speed” for many years. There are some things players can control and some things they cannot. This month let’s examine the variables we can control.
Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

STRATEGY is the art of playing a game within your limitations. Generally speaking, pool players are limited by both their physical and technical abilities. During a game, you have to be realistic about your playing ability. You should know what you can and can’t do. Everyone has a unique set of talents and being able to manage those talents is an important part of the game. However, sometimes our ego gets in the way. It’s that little voice that tells you that you can play like Earl Strickland even though you really can’t. You know—the same voice that tells us that we would look really cool cutting the nine ball backward into the corner pocket rather than playing a simple safe. Great players know that if they try to run out before the time is right, the game usually

ends in disaster. Be realistic with what you can actually do and as Dirty Harry would say, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” HEALTH is also very important and this aspect requires us to exercise regularly. It also requires us to eat healthy foods and follow a strict diet. Being in good physical condition is an important part of performing well. It helps us to remain positive and gives us that extra edge we need to repeat a quality pool stroke over and over again, especially near the end of the tournament when most players are getting physically tired. Today, the best players in the world are “athletes.” They understand the importance of being in shape. It wasn’t that way fifteen years ago, but today you generally have two options: get in shape or suffer the consequences. MENTAL GAME is another variable that we can control. It is a known fact that having a positive attitude affects the chemistry in our brain and allows us to think and perform on a higher level. In order for us to do that, players should consider “reprogramming” their mind so it can better optimize their physical abilities. Three ways to reprogram your mind include the use of hypnosis, positive affirmations, and subliminal messaging. HYPNOSIS is the use of hypnotherapy by a licensed potential. It is a form of mental training for the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy can enhance your performance on the pool table by transforming negative thoughts into positive ones. Hypnotic suggestion often has a positive effect on the way players think and perform during high-level competition. Positive affirmations work to reprogram our route guidance system, which significantly affects our performance on the pool table. The idea here is that your brain is going to talk to you, so you might as well train it to talk to you in a positive way. You can practice positive self-talk by making up a list of things you want to believe about yourself (see the appendix for an example). Once the list is made, you can train yourself by repeating (out loud) each of the statements on a daily basis. Pool is a mentally draining game that can change your attitude from one ball to the next. How you react will ultimately affect your performance. In the words of Thomas Paine, “The real man smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection.” Yes, pool is an emotional roller coaster, but a positive attitude will allow you to remain optimistic even in the face of adversity.

The legacy and legend of Efren (Bata) Reyes... “Will live on forever” “First off it was his choice to play me, and I am conscious of the fact that he is NOT in his prime”. This man has done more for pool in this world and has handled himself incredibly. For the last 20yrs I’ve had the opportunity to drive him crazy chasing him at every tournament basically like a little kid tugging on his dad’s shirt to go to the park. Not one time did the man ever turn me down to play so I always felt maybe he noticed something inside me. Every time we played I wanted to impress him and if I didn’t see him for 5/6 months I couldn’t wait to get my chance to show him how much I had learned. Around 12 years ago I had the chance to play him a race to 7 One pocket getting 8/7 for 3 or 5k can’t remember but the guy that was putting part of the money up about had a heart attack when I said “I don’t want 8/7”! I want to play even! So I told my guy I don’t care if u bet or not but I’m betting all I got and I don’t want a spot! He decided to give me the money and we played the set. Low and behold I played out of my mind and beat him 7-3 that day. The best has ALWAYS come out in me playing this special man 6 other times for bigger money and amazingly I won ALL SIX times! What Efren has done for his country is simply nothing short of amazing. He has built many many homes for people that needed them and donated

thousands and thousands of dollars to his countrymen. He has helped many sick people and so much more... I really don’t need to go into all his titles as you can just look them up. As for me and my opinion, when this game loses Efren, the game will have lost a part of me as well. He is and ALWAYS will be my hero and when we are in battle, we want to chop each other down but when that’s over I go back to idolizing him to the fullest. I hope and pray he returns to our country to play for many more years to come in front of all of you. THIS LAST MATCH FOR 50K... I hope that people understand this man is still in the top echelon of players and before we played this epic set many many people said, “Efren just won the accu-stats event and has been playing un-godly in LA so I feel Frost will lose”... That’s ok and I completely get that everyone has a pure right to their own opinion. But when I just beat him plz don’t say “well he’s just too old”. Give me the credit of executing my game plan and keeping him locked down for hours and tightening his stroke up intentionally. That’s all I ask... As for Efren, he’s ALL our hero and I hope to only walk a few steps in his shoes one day. And to Efren, if your reading this, I love you from the bottom of my heart and you’ve made me who I am today. A small but extremely talented field of 53 players gathered to play the fourth of 18 stops on the MWST in Fresno, CA on May 29, 2016 at Diamond Billiards in Fresno, CA. Room owner Sheri Dadian keeps the legacy of her late husband, Dan Dadian by promoting various tournaments throughout the year including the MWST. This event is always a fan favorite as the locals are treated to some world class pool and this event did not disappoint. Leading the top half of the bracket Vilmos Foldes, Sheri Dadian, Oscar Dominguez was none other than “House Pro” and with the young gun, Chris Robinson. The closely contested Hungarian champion, Vilmos Foldes. Vilmos defended his match went to Dominguez as he had better results off the home court with wins over Jim Newbough, Chris Byers, break than his opponent giving Oscar the opportunity to Tommy Soria, John Nekali, and Oscar Dominguez. play Foldes in the finals. The last time these two met in finals, Dominguez developing into a top player on the west coast and this was defeated Vilmos, however this was not the case as a solid a clear example as to why this is. Chris began his campaign performance from the Hungarian dispatched Dominguez to with wins over the following; Dirk Grundman, Daniel a second place finish. Campos, and Sal Butera. MEMORIAL The 2016 July version of the Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial Monthly Pool Tournament in Saratoga, WY was held on July 22nd & 23rd. Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado were all represented in this tournament with 18 players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Wheatland, Casper, Scottsbluff, Denver and Colorado Springs all making the trek to Saratoga, WY to compete for the Saratoga (a 10-ball & 8-ball hybrid game) title. This month the players got to be the first shooters to experience the new “Rocket Balls” which debuted to make the Saratoga game much more understandable and easier to play because of the traditional color sequence of the balls! Casper Wyoming’s Perry Gilbert showed that he was still in stroke over the summer as he went undefeated en route to a 1st place finish that included strong shooting wins over Ricardo Martinez, Cruz Garcia, Tom Thompson and Anthony Lucero! Tournament runner up honors went to Tom Thompson of Pine Haven, WY who had yet another great showing recording wins over James Fortin, Mack Pride, Ryan Henry and Lucero to secure the 2nd place money. Anthony Lucero of Rawlins, WY and Mack Pride now out of Colorado finished up in the 3rd & 4th place spots respectively. These tournaments continue each month with a minimum of $500 added to each tournament and only a $30 entry fee which is paid back to the players 100%. This coming September will see the return of the $1,000 added money tournaments! The fact that there are no green fees or quarters required and $49 per night motel rooms this tournament is certainly a must for all rocky mountain regional players or those just passing through the area! 28th Annual BEF Junior Nationals

July 20, 2016 (Denver, CO): On July 13th - 16th, 2016 the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) proudly held its 28th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships with its largest field of juniors in history. The record breaking event was held at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center just outside of the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. For the third year in a row top junior from each state made their yearly journey to this year’s most prestigious of all U.S. junior tournaments in which the venue was hosted alongside the 2016 Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Billiard & Home Leisure Expo. This year’s field boasted 193 players from 39 qualifying events in 28 different states. The four participating divisions included 18 & Under Boys (18UB), 18 & Under Girls (18UG), 14 & Under Boys (14UB) and 14 & Under Girls (14UG). This event is the only opportunity for U.S. billiard student-athletes to qualify to compete at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships, as well as for Team USA at the annual Atlantic Challenge Cup (ACC). This year’s junior nationals kicked off with its highly anticipated annual AdultYouth Scotch Doubles tournament directed by Mel and Tammy Jo Leonard the night before on Tuesday, July 12th. This year drew a record-breaking 93 teams participating. This doubles event gives the parents and adults the chance to
of preliminary double elimination brackets qualifying to a seeded single elimination finals bracket. The four divisions 18UB, 14UB, 18UG, and 14UG played on 128, 64, 32 and 32 double elimination brackets respectively. From these brackets the top 25% qualified from each division to single elimination brackets in which the winners were seeded and the one-loss side was blind drawn. Changes were also made to shorter races which were reviewed and determined by

With the largest field ever came necessary trial changes that were implemented to the traditional BEF Junior National format, which included going to a pro style format

Tournament Director Earl Munson, “After our evaluations, longer races may be expected at next year’s 2017 BEF Junior Nationals based on table availability and participating player fields.” Another change to this year’s Junior Nationals was the banquet night which was held on the third night of the tournament, Friday July 15th instead of the traditional first night. This welcomed improvement was a big hit as the banquet hall was a buzz of excitement as players, family members, pros, sponsors, and BEF staff and volunteers were in attendance for a great meal, remembrance, awards and honors. A tearful audience gave remembrance by a watching a presentation of a touching collection of pictures of fellow BEF junior player, the late Brendan Crockett, playing in past BEF Junior Nationals and WPA World Junior events. Executive Director, Samm Diep-Vidal read a letter from the Crockett family, Mark Wilson of Lindenwood University, Brendan’s former coach, and 2002 BCA Junior National Champion Beau Runningen, a close friend of the Crockett’s, both gave tearful speeches remembering the skilled billiard prodigy and honored him by awarding the newly renamed Brendan Crockett Character Awards. Special Guest Speaker at the banquet this year was “The Scorpion” Johnny Archer. He took a moment to share his life story and powerful message of perseverance. As always Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman made his 23rd appearance at the junior nationals gave out his Artistic Pool awards to this year’s champions. (Results announced separately and posted on BEF website.) The banquet night rounded off with an astounding record of BEF Academic All-

American (AAA) Awards presented. Of the 193 player field, an incredible 42% of this year’s participants (that’s 81 players!) earned school GPA’s of 3.5 or better to receive this award! The sport of billiards is definitely attracting, creating, and maintaining academic excellence! Of those 81 student-athletes, 20 of them had a perfect 4.0 GPA. (Complete list of recipients announced separately and posted on BEF website.) The banquet concluded with Door Prize winners being announced, including these two lucky grand prize recipients: Bryan Rodriguez, Edinburg, TX winner of a J. Pechauer Custom Cue & Case and Sandra E. Meece, Seneca, SC winner of a 9’ Diamond ProAm pool table. Without a doubt match play all week was exciting and intense as all players vied to make it to their respective finals single-elimination brackets. The finals play for all divisions was held on Saturday July 16th. In an effort to stay more aligned with the WPA World events and the Olympics, the BEF awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze
from Bloomington, MN was knocked over to the one loss side of the preliminary bracket by fellow ACC Team USA teammate Emily Herpel from Freehold, NY. Larson nick-named “The Grinder” for a reason had fellow 2016 ACC Team USA members Serena Black from Warrensburg, IL & Sierra Reams from Richmond, VA on the one loss side standing in her way in which she respectively knocked out of the tournament. In the first match on the finals board Kaylee McIntosh, a very skilled player from Tampa Bay Florida, almost ended Larson’s bid to repeat her title taking her hill-hill before narrowly losing the final game moving Larson on to eventually match up with her 2015 ACC Team USA teammate Taylor Hansen from Mankato, MN in a match-up that ended with a convincing score of 5-2 and Larson moving on to eventually face fellow 2015 Worlds Team USA member Michelle Jiang in the finals. In the on-the-edge of your seat hill-hill match for the Gold Medal, Larson won 7-6 as she once again retained her 18UG girl’s title as the best in the U.S. with now five consecutive BEF Junior Nationals titles. In the 14UG division it was just as intense, as the 2015 14UG Champion Ashley Fullerton from Lake Park, MN showed she too has what it takes to be a repeat champion when she dug deep after being down in a few matches to take it all the way to her 2nd BEF title in a row. Fullerton went all the way to the winners seeded finalist bracket where she ground down Tiana Jiang from Harvard, MA in the first round to advance her to the second round.
In the second round, Fullerton kept amazingly calm even when she was down in the match 4-1 against up and comer Amanda Campbell from Arvada, CO. All and Aryana Lynch from Allen, TX both played very well with both taking the medalists in the 18UB, 18UG and 14UB divisions qualified for the 2016 WPA 14UG Bronze Medals home. World Junior 9-Ball Championships November 16-20 in Shanghai, China, along with the gold and silver medalists from the 14UG division. Title of 18UB champ was up for grabs as reigning champ Chris Robinson aged out. In 2014, Ricky Evans, from St. Peters, MO took home the 14UB championship All BEF Junior National participants also qualify to be selected as potential title while his older brother took the 18UB title in the same year. Ricky has since nominees for the Atlantic Challenge Cup Team USA at the 2017 event being looked to do what his brother has done and win the 18UB division as well. Having held in Europe next year. The future is very bright for our BEF junior program moved up to the 18UB division after turning 15 this year he finally got his chance members as there are now more than ever before, so many high level competitive to prove himself. Even when Evans was down in one of his matches he would simply not show it. He fought his way through winning all his matches putting him in the winners seeded side of the 18UB finals single elimination bracket. In the first round Evans defeated Brandon VanOverbeke from Marshall, MN 7-4 sliding him eastward on the bracket to face Jorden Burden from Jacksonville, FL in which Evans once again closed the match 7-4. In the third round Evans kept Travis Southard from Reidsville, NC from moving closer to the finals and handed Southard a Bronze Medal for his efforts. Evan Swett from Wichita, KS also earned the Bronze Medal for his performance having been defeated by Nathan Diederich. Ricky Evans is no stranger to playing in a high pressure match and he quickly dispatched Nathan Diederich from Victorville, CA with a crushing loss 9-0 but still earning Diederich a very respectable Silver Medal for his fine over-all tournament performance. Ricky Evans has earned his first Gold Medal since moving up only this year to the 18UB bracket earning his second BEF Junior National Title in both the 14UB & now the 18UB. Ricky Evans, Nathan Diederich, Evan Swett, and Travis Southard will qualify for the WPA World Junior event held in China this November.

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (July 22, 2016) — A record number of aspiring young APA members from across North America made their way to Davenport, Iowa in early July for the APA Junior Championships.
Books. Third-place finishers received Beats headsets. Each of the top three finishers also took home a prize package that included a break cue, bridge, APA duffle bag and trophy.
After four-days of having fun, making new friends from across the country and playing their hearts out on the pool table, three champions were crowned in each tier of the Junior Championships.
The event also included a Junior/Adult Doubles event, recognition for Outstanding Academic Achievements and a special exhibition and autograph signing by Florian “Venom” Kohler. In the finals of the Green Tier (Skill Levels 1-3), 14-year-old Deanna Wilder (SL 3) of Carthage, Miss., defeated Tanner Schurke (SL 2) of Buffalo, Iowa., by a score of 25-14. Schurke finished Runner-up. Jonathan Lynn of Huntsville, Ala., and Gracie Davis of Shelbyville, Ill., tied for 3rd Place in the Green Tier. Not surprisingly, the Green Tier featured the largest number of competitors in this year’s event with 160 participants. In the finals of the White Tier (Skill Levels 4-5), 15-year-old Austin Le (SL 4) of Wilmington, N.C., defeated Skylar Brown (SL 5) of Cape Girardeau, Mo., 31-36 (Brown needed 38). Doug Tuttle of La Place, Ill., and William Haubner of Decatur, Ill., tied for 3rd Place in the White Tier. The White Tier had 69 participants. In the finals of the Black Tier (Skill Levels 6-9), 13-year-old Nathan Childress (SL 9) of North Chesterfield, Va., defeated James Diaz (SL 6) of Phoenix, Ariz., 75-27 (Diaz was racing to 46). The Black Tier, featuring the highest skilled players, included 23 competitors. Tying for 3rd Place in the Black Tier were Tyler Anderson of Decatur, Ill., and Cole Bryson of Windham, Ohio. Overall, more than 250 players competed in one of the three 9-Ball skill level tiers July 7 –10 at Sharky’s Billiards. Champions each took home an X-Box One. Runners-up received Google Chrome
