Perfecting Stop Shots

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com

In my last column, I gave the answer to the stop shot puzzle from two columns ago. Two readers, Matt Hiatt and Bryce Leong turned in answers too late to Bob Jewett acknowledge last time. Both found the solution using stripes. Playing a stop shot is the simplest way to play position because if you get the stroke right, the cue ball will end in an exact position. As long as that’s where you want the cue ball to be, you’re set. Because of the physics involved, it’s much easier to get a stop shot right within say half a ball than it is to get a partial follow or draw shot right within the same margin for say two balls of forward or backward movement. (See my column from October 2007 for a drill for precision slight follow/draw shots.) There is a hidden danger with stop shots, though, and that is throw. Of course since a stop shot is by definition a straight in shot, you don’t get “collision induced throw” which happens when the cue ball rubs across a ball during a cut shot. Instead you risk getting throw due to unintended side spin on the cue ball. It turns out that left or right side spin on the cue ball is most effective in throwing the object ball (to the right or left, respectively) when the cue ball has no draw or follow at the instant of contact. Think of which way the surface of the cue ball will be rubbing across the face of the object ball. With only side spin, the cue ball will

be rubbing left or right while if there is also draw or follow, the rub will be at an angle and the left or right will be diluted. This means that unintended throw due to unintended spin is most dangerous on a stop shot. You need to make sure you don’t fall into this trap. In the diagram are two drills that will move you closer to perfection. Both of these use a stripe as the cue ball so that you can see whether you have side spin on the cue ball. If you have one of those practice cue balls with a stripe around it, that will be even better. In Shot A, the goal is simply to shoot a stop shot into the side pocket. The cue ball should not go forward or back after hitting the object ball-- you’re shooting a stop shot -- but more importantly, the stripe should remain vertical and “pointed” along the line of the shot. Shoot the shot from the same position each time, and gradually increase the speed of the shot. How hard can you hit the shot and still kill the cue ball and leave the stripe in place? In Shot B, the cue ball starts behind the line and the shot is straight to a corner pocket. Start with the object ball one diamond over the line. Again the goal is to stop the cue ball dead with the stripe right. This shot is varied by moving the object ball away from the line towards the pocket. If you have trouble keeping spin off the cue ball, here are some suggestions. Get a friend to tell you whether you are lining up in the middle of the cue ball -- many people have trouble seeing the center due to eye alignment. Address the cue ball low and check the reflection of your stick in the surface of the cue ball, Game Room Furniture! Pool Tables which needs to be shiny. Sales & Service ALL AGES Does the reflection point straight WELCOME back at you? Finally, try watching 2nd Sat Sc Dbls at 3PM the cue stick rather than the cue ball or object ball on the final stroke -- 1st/3rd Sat Black Light Night make sure you are coming straight Sunday 8-Ball at 1PM through the ball. 102 Avenue D (Second Floor) Snohomish, WA 98290

Finding a Good Instructor

by Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

If you think this is going to be a “look no further than me” type of article just to promote my own services, you’re wrong. I’m writing this in order to deal with a problem that is often encountered but not often resolved with the most gratifying results. How should one go about finding a good billiard instructor? Should you look in the Yellow Pages? Should you ask around at the local pool hall? Should you keep your eye out for someone wearing a shirt that reads “BILLIARD Roger Long INSTRUCTOR” on the back? Or should you just get online and start Googling? Well, you might do any and all of these things, but chances are you’re not going to find exactly who you’re looking for unless you know exactly what to look for. And what do I mean by that? I mean you should be looking for someone who is qualified to provide you with exactly what you need at a price you can afford. And how can you know when you have found such a person? Well, that’s what we’re going to discuss today. But first, let’s tackle the old saying that goes, “Those who can’t do; teach.” That saying is constantly thrown out there by ‘tweeners - those who can’t do, or teach ? and it seems to imply that instructors are losers, so how could they possibly know what they are talking about? In fairness to instructors, that worn out cliche’ could easily be turned around to say, “Those who can’t teach, must do, or else they’re just another “’tweener’”. Now all pros know how to play, but many of them cannot explain how they do it. You see, they haven’t been trained to communicate the concepts of fundamentals, mechanics, and physics to others. But a good instructor will not only know how to communicate these concepts, he/she will know how to feed them to the student in the proper order, at the proper pace, and in terminology that will best suit the gender and age of the student they are working with. So, communication is the first attribute you should be looking for in an instructor. When interviewing a prospective instructor, ask specific questions and see how he or she answers them. Also ask if the instructor uses any teaching aids - video recording, aiming devices, illustrations, text books, etc. - as these are all tools that can help provide better communications. What about resources? Knowledge and experience are not the only resources to be relied upon. It’s not quite as important to know the answer to every single question that comes up as it is to know where to find the answer. Good instructors will acknowledge that they don’t know everything there is to know about pool (who does?), but he/she will always have an extensive library, as well as an extensive network of colleagues and peers, where an answer to practically any question can be found in the event that the instructor does not immediately have it. Lastly (for now, anyway), be leery of instructors who advertise “secrets” for sale. There are no real secrets in pool; there is only information that has not been properly explained to the student before. Also be leery of instructors who use too many acronyms and buzz words in their sales pitches and advertisements. That practice is usually just an attempt to surround themselves with some kind of mystical aura which, in turn, is intended to command higher fees for their services.

A Bad Plan is Better than No Plan

5

By Samm Diep, PoolTipJar.com © July 2009

I don’t even need to explain the title of this article because I’m sure you know exactly what I’m referring to. When we don’t decide what we want to accomplish or if we don’t fully commit to the outcome, it is more likely that we’ll miss or get bad position. How can we expect to achieve something when we don’t even know what we’re trying to achieve? How many times have you played position for “oh, somewhere in the middle of the table,” and ended up with a bank shot, the cue ball frozen to the rail with a tester, Samm Diep or even hooked behind the only possible ball on the table? If you have no idea where you’re going, chances are you‘ll get there. What is a bad plan? A bad plan is a bad decision. Maybe you chose the wrong pattern and were left snookered on your last ball. Perhaps you’re playing 8-ball and you carelessly got too straight on your key ball. Now you have to find a way to get through traffic back to the other end of the table for the 8. These are all examples of poor decisions. In these instances, you had a bad plan. Regardless of how your bad plan occurred, if you address a shot with no plan whatsoever, you’re just as doomed from the beginning. Even the most beginner player that has yet to learn cue ball control has a plan. Their plan: Make the ball. Make the ball. Make the ball. They may not play perfect patterns, but if their alignment and mechanics are sound, they will most likely pocket the ball. Once they discover rails and English, they graduate from simply making the ball to also controlling the cue ball. Their new plan becomes: Make the ball and draw the cue ball three diamonds. Whatever position is required of the cue ball, this new element now becomes part of their plan. The point is that there is a plan. At a certain level, our abilities have strengthened and the challenge becomes putting it all together in a good plan. We know where to aim and what speed we should use to accomplish what we want. The part we often neglect is to develop a plan that takes advantage of all our current skills. Having a plan means that BEFORE we get down and address the cue ball, we make a decision on exactly what we would like to see happen. We’ll do our best to make it happen, but the only way to give ourselves the best chance is to have a full plan of attack, regardless if the plan is good or bad. You may think, “Let’s just make this ball and see what happens” is a plan, but it’s actually no plan at all. Establish a plan and give yourself the best chance at the shot. Commit your mind to the full picture. If it’s a bad plan, embrace it and have a better plan next time. Having no plan teaches us nothing. Nobody Could Touch Rafael Crawford Crowned State Champ

By Samm Diep, PoolTipJar.com © July 2009 Photos Courtesy of Mike Fieldhammer, BilliardCoach.com

On Saturday, July 11, 2009, an impromptu Colorado State Straight Pool Championship was presented by Pete Way and the Denver Straight Pool Association. The beautiful Rack ‘Em Billiards of Aurora, with its well-kempt 9-foot Diamond tables was the perfect host room for the championship. “I try to do what I can to keep the pool players happy,” said owner Sean Meade regarding all his recent money-added events.

On this day, a small field of the top straight pool junkies from the mile high city rolled in. After losing his first match, Jeff Crawford came back to defeat Rick Field 150-89 in a single race finals match. The state champion received a paid $350 entry to the NCS 14.1 Continuous Championships in Parsippany, NJ July 31 to August 2. Crawford will be representing Colorado for the second time at another NCS Championship. “He came out firing,” said Way regarding Crawford’s performance in the finals. Crawford was determined not to let the title slip away from him after losing a heartbreaker his first match, 100-99. There were no significant high runs, only very smart, steady moves. The next NCS qualifier at Rack ‘Em will be the 9-Ball Qualifier scheduled for Saturday, July 18, which anticipates a much higher attendance. Contact Sean Meade at 303.755.7675 for more information.

by: Gene MIller Mountain View’s expansive California Billiard Club has presented another great weekend of tournament 9-ball, and when we reached the finals of the 108-entry field, certainly nobody was surprised to see Rafael Martinez and Santos Sambajon playing for the $1,500 top prize. For many players it was an entirely new format, but it’s been in Bob Jewett’s repertoire for many years and has been used extensively in NPL tournaments. It’s the buy-back system, and there were many players who put up $20 to give it another try. You could call it the “assembly-line” system. While one 8-player tournament was starting, another was well under way and another was wrapping up. The first six finalists qualified in one try, but some players entered as many as five qualifiers without advancing to Sunday’s double-elimination championship. In all, there were fourteen 8-player qualifiers (actually, thirteen and a half), a seventeenhour tournament treadmill that finished at 3:30am Sunday. The response from players Rafael Martinez was unanimous – they liked the format, and many made comments like “We should do this every month!” With a low $20 entry fee, plus $2,500 added, and a guaranteed $40 if you could win your first two matches, almost every player who didn’t qualify would re-enter at least once. I heard no complaints on the alternate breaks format (except one guy on the phone), as most players seem to realize that alternate breaks is a good way to keep the matches close, and it puts pressure on a player to finish a rack when opportunity knocks. There were enough upsets to satisfy me, a tournament director who does not want to use a format that heavily favors the experts. The number of upsets and hill-hill matches compares to NPL handicapping. There were so many exciting matches during the weekend that the MartinezSambajon match was an anticlimax. Rafael was in fine form and Santos just couldn’t stay with him. Although Santos nearly caught up from a 5-2 deficit, he would have needed absolute perfection to overcome Rafael, and the disappointed gallery, thirsty for a second match, saw instead a last desperate twisting kick shot by Santos before Rafael finished the evening with a 6-4 win and $1,500 in his pocket. Events like this don’t just happen automatically. Room owners must WANT them to happen. So thanks to Chris and Ben of California Billiards, and thanks to Bob Jewett. It was a blast. Whitehead Sharks Opponents!

July 21, 2009 ~ CueSports International Saturday July 18, Pool Sharks in Las Vegas hosted a National Championship Series (NCS) 10-Ball qualifier. Sixteen top area players competed for a spot to the 2009 NCS 10-Ball National Championship which will be held September 5-7, 2009 at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino also in Sin City. Included in the group of sixteen were top talent such as NCS 9-Ball qualifier winner Randy Kukla, Al Lawrence, Tre Baker, and Justin Whitehead to name a few. Stacy Allsup, who won the 2008 Doc Hill Memorial and known for her fearlessness on the table, was the lone female entrant. In the race to 7, winner break format, it was a strong field but came down to Tre Baker and Justin Whitehead in the finals. Baker had to work his way through the one Justin Whitehead loss side after a first round loss to Rick White 7-3, but in his relaxed manner took it one match at a time to last the day and make it to the finals. Whitehead was highly determined and cruised through to the hot seat. The finals, which was played in the Pool Sharks pit on a tight pocked 9’ Diamond Pro, was a tremendous match. In a one match race to 10, the two players battled it out. Whitehead took a quick lead however Baker never let that throw him and would even it up at every opportunity. The match was neck to neck to hill-hill. With the winner rack, winner break format, Baker was up to bat to crack open the rack in game 19. Coming up dry but with a wide open table, Baker knew it would take a major mistake from Whitehead to allow him back up and a chance for the spot to the NCS 10-Ball Nationals. Whitehead did not falter and in a blink of an eye ran the table out for a 10-9 win. Thanks to John Kutcher, Joe Cannella and the staff at Pool Sharks for all their support. The 2009 NCS 9 and 10-Ball National Championships will be held back to back at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino Sept. 3-7, 2009. Each of the two NCS national events will have a max field of 64. The prize fund, based on 64, is $32,000 per each event for a potential of $64,000 over the course of 5 days. Additionally, the top two finishers at both the NCS 9-Ball and NCS 10-Ball National Championships will win a paid entry to the 2010 U.S Open 10-Ball Championship which will have a minimum $25,000 added! NCS qualifiers are still taking place in both 9-Ball and 10-Ball around the U.S. For a completed list of NCS qualifiers please visit www.playcsipool. com.

Cole Wins Malarkey’s

Malarkey’s Pool and Brew hosted Tour Stop #3 of the NWPA Tour. The women were greeted with Krispy Kremes by a very courteous staff and enjoyed playing on the vintage Brunswicks, two of which have ashtrays at the corner pockets. Malarkey’s with its full service bar and complete menu, hosts numerous pool events throughout the year including Sunday night

tournaments on the 7ft bar tables and APA leagues. A sunny Saturday morning welcomed 32 women eager to play. As the day, progressed the field was whittled down to the final eight who would meet on Sunday. On the B-side of the bracket, Andrea Saenz-Maes, Regene Wentzell, Eve Stockstill, and Suzanne Smith remained to play on Sunday. On the A-side, Cindy Sliva, Mary Hopkin, Mikki Small, and Liz Cole were left. Early in the day it became evident that there were two players that would be battling for the top prize. Liz Cole with her smooth stroke and unwavering confidence won her first match of the day 7-3 and handing Mikki Small her first loss. In her next match to Mary Hopkin, Liz Cole played great pool to beat the seasoned veteran 7-4 and secure a comfortable position on the point. After a disappointing loss to Liz Cole in her first match of the day, Mikki Small came back with a vengeance to beat Suzanne Smith 7-1. In her next match with Cindy Sliva, Mikki made a phenomenal 9-ball shot shooting the cue ball out of the pocket to cut the 9 up table into the same side corner pocket to take the match 7-4. Against Mary Hopkin, Mikki was on fire winning 2 games right away with early 9-ball combos. While Mary made some great jump shots to get out of trouble, it wasn’t enough to extinguish Mikki’s fire. Mary had to settle for third. The final round brought Mikki and Liz together for a rematch. Unfortunately for Mikki, Liz was able to extinguish the fire that Mary could not. Liz jumped in front right away with two table runs. Mikki answered in the third game with a hard rail 3, 9 combo to bring the score 2-1. In the fourth, Mikki missed a long 9-ball shot giving the Liz the opportunity to increase her lead. Mikki regrouped in the fifth game, running the rack to bring the score to 3-2. Liz missed a 1, 9 combination in the next game leaving a 1, 9 billiard for Mikki. Executing the billiard perfectly, Mikki tied the match 3-3. By the seventh game, Liz was in stroke and playing like the champion she is. Liz makes an amazing 7 ball and brings the cue ball 3 rails to line up on the short side of the 8 for an easy out. Score 4-3. Mikki misses an easy 7 in the eighth to hand Liz an easy run out. Game ten, Mikki makes a beautiful bank on the 8 but leaves another bank on the 9. This time the 9 rattles pocket but stays on the table, handing Liz an easy win and a match score of 7-3. From there, Liz was in complete control. With a table run in game eleven, she is on the hill. Liz wins game twelve and the match in style with a smile and hug for Mikki. The NWPA would like to thank Malarkey’s for hosting the event and Chris Rogers and Ford for running a great tournament. 1st $465 LIZ COLE 2nd $310 MIKKI SMALL 3rd $200 MARY HOPKIN 4th $160 CINDY SLIVA 5/6th $92 REGENE WENTZELL /SUZANNE SMITH 7/8th $72 ANDREA SAENZ-MAES/EVE STOCKSTILL

San Francisco Tavern Pool League

Dateline: Monday, July 27th, 2009 - The San Francisco Tavern Pool League’s Spring 2009 Championships were held on Saturday, July 25th, at 7 pm. It was a exciting night of championship match play for everyone involved. Master’s Cup Champions Congratulations to Monday A: ROUTE 101

Charles Carr*, Mark Cooper, Jesse LaFear, Tom Seymour, Gerry Tiernan, Dave Walker, Edward Wellington

The Master’s Cup is the final match between the top Monday A or B division team, and the top Tuesday A or B division team, and is decided by a race to 13 games. The Master’s Cup is the ultimate grail of competitive amatuer pool in the City of San Francisco, and is sponsored by the San Francisco Tavern Pool League. This championship match was a lot closer than the final score suggests. The night started out with two wins, one by Canchola’s Alex Rivas and one by Raul Sarmiento over Route 101’s Mark Cooper and Edward Wellington respectively. Some impressive table skills were executed by Canchola. In fact, Canchola’s was the only team to blank an opponent 15-0 in a regular match night over the course of the Spring 2009 season. Canchola’s simply came up against a team destined to win this match, and Route 101 was entering the Championship match on a very hot streak. Route 101 was floating in on an impressive (47-27) .635 average through three rounds of the playoffs. Canchola’s has nothing to feel bad about this match. They simply met a team that fired on all cylinders, got the best rolls, and kept on rolling. Route 101 had the experience to withstand (and relish) the pressure and to come out victorious . President’s Cup Champions Congratulations Monday C: NOB HILL TAVERN Donny Beckwith, Rik Cooper*, Ken Hamada, Rich Keen, Adam Lewis, Dan Olsen

The President’s Cup is the final match between the top Monday C, D, or E team, and the top Tuesday C or D team. The President’s Cup is the footpath a team of grasshoppers must take to get to the upper-levels of pool craftsmanship in the San Francisco Tavern Pool League. But these teams are no pushovers; great skill, heart, and prowess ruled the night at Canchola’s between the two adversaries. At the end, Rob Taylor from Bender’s said they just couldn’t keep up the pressure. Bender’s Bar and Nob Hill Tavern played well all night, with Bender’s pushing ahead 6-4 at the end of the second round of the night. But Nob Hill Tavern started coming back with rounds of 3-2 in their favor to scrap back and take the Cup. Special mention should go to Dan Olsen from Nob Hill Tavern, who won all five of his games in the Championship match to help Nob Hill Tavern grasp the President’s Cup and hold it high. The team is sure to succeed in upper divisional play starting next season. This was an impressive Championship match run for the Bender’s team, who have only been together for the past two seasons. No longer “Spring (2009) chickens,” the league hopes to see the team continue their success in a higher division in the Fall 2009 season. Captained by Ron Elder, the enthusiasm of Devin Breese, Mark Brown, Johnny Doan, Jessica Fauver, Wendy Hall, John Hartsfield, and Rob Taylor is infectious! Player’s Cup Champions Congratulations Wednesday A: GINO & CARLO Patricia Giatis*, Roberta Martin, Danny Mullan, Sam Runco, Pat Saracco, Bob Simon

The Player’s Cup is the third Championship Cup in the San Francisco Tavern Pool League. The Cup is the final match that pits the always formidable co-ed

13

Wednesday overall winner against the Monday/Tuesday A or B team with the best regular season record not playing in the Master’s Cup. Patricia Giatis helms the very strong Wednesday team out of Gino & Carlo, which includes players Roberta Martin, Danny Mullan, Sam Runco, Pat Saracco, and Bob Simon. The team was coming back to defend their Fall 2008 championship in a neutral location, after dispatching a strong 800 Larkin team in the 3rd round of the playoffs. A fiercely competitive, tightly-knit team, Gino & Carlo carries on the North Beach tradition of being able to clear the table in a hurry, with accuracy and precision. Gino & Carlo fought hard to win the Player’s Cup 13-8 against the also strongly competitive, tightly-knit team out of Napper Tandy. Napper Tandy is a friendly Irish bar in the heart of the Mission. The match was decided at 13-8 in favor of Gino & Carlo. The final story here is that Gino & Carlo repeats as Player’s Cup Champions. We repeat... GINO & CARLO REPEATS AS PLAYER’S CUP CHAMPS! Fall 2009 Season is Fast Approaching! Applications for Fall 2009 sponsorship are now being accepted for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday are open nights; on Wednesday, you must field a team which includes at least two members of each gender in each round during a match. The cost for sponsorship is $225.00. The deadline for returning teams is Saturday, August 8th. San Francisco Tavern Pool League - PO Box 471732 - San Francisco, CA 94147 Web Site: www.sfpool.com Info Line: 415-LOG-POOL 415-564-7665

Both Regene and Liz would return, Cindy increased the lead to 6-0 before faltering in rack 7 where advance through their matches to battle for the hot seat which Regene an unintentional safety had Cindy kicking at the 7-ball. She made a good hit, but the opening allowed Regene to run out and get on the board. A couple more misses late in the rack allowed for Regene to bring the score to 6-3. Cindy took game 10 to get within two of the win. Cindy was stroking every shot in the next couple racks, but a ballin-hand on the 9 and a 9-ball hanger allowed Regene to creep within two games of Cindy. Game 13 would start out with a multiple safeties by both players to jockey around the foot spot cluster (their was some concerns with racking). Cindy would take the game after a rattle on the 6-ball left Regene forced to play a kick defense. Just missed, Cindy was left with a long shot on the 6, which she made, and then ran out to reach the hill first. Game 14 was more of the same as Regene broke and made the 6 and 7-balls. She made the 1, but then followed the 2 in trying to cheat the pocket. With ball-in-hand and five balls remaining, Cindy made the 3 and 4 easily, but missed knocking the 5 out for better shape. She attempted a carom off the 5 into the 8-ball and missed. Regene made the 5 easily, but came back down table and snookered herself behind the 9-ball. She played the kick shot to cut the 8 in the corner, but ended up hitting it too thin and leaving the 8-ball in front of the pocket. Cindy made the 8 easily, and set herself up perfectly to make the 9 in the opposite corner. Game and match go to Cindy… Great finish Regene, and welcome back to the NWPA. (Regene was a regular on the tour back in the days of Hsin Huang, but has since been staying closer to home with leagues and local events.) Superstar Notable- Cindy lost her first match of the tournament to defending WWA BCA 9-Ball Champion Andrea Saenz-Maes. She battled all the way back to take the title. Michelle Nabs Title

By Christina Piona The West Coast Women’s Regional 9-Ball Tour got off to a great start at Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento, California over the July 18-19th weekend. T w e n t y nine players showed their support by competing in the first of five tour stops on this regional tour. Although several veteran players were in evidence, many of the players in the 1st Michelle Rakin competition were first timers to this type of tournament. Many of those newcomers were regular 8-ball players who were broadening their pool playing horizons by competing in 9-ball. There was an excitement in the air for the players, poolroom staff and organizing committee alike! After all the preliminary administrative requirements, play got under way and the competition was in full force. Mai Schieck, finishing in the cash, tied for 7th place, had three tough matchups in a row right out of the gate. She went up against Eleanor Callado, where they went to the hill before Mai came out on top; Mary Rakin, who she defeated 7/5 and then she suffered a loss to Sher Ahola-Caruso. Holly Robinson made it to the cash after losing her first round and winning four matches on the one-loss side before facing off and losing to Mary Rakin, leaving her tied for 7th place. Heather Pulford came to us via the great State of Texas. She showed her talents by winning her first three matches, before matching up against Michelle Rakin who dispatched her to the one-loss side and her tied for 5th place finish. She is a welcome addition to the tour. Sher Ahola-Caruso showed us why she’s been a top competitor in the pool scene for many years. She was excited to be playing again after a hiatus from competitive pool. Personally speaking, it’s great to have her back. She won her first three matches putting her deep in the hunt. She moved to the one-loss side after losing her match against Kim Benson 7/5, where she ended up tied for 5th place. Eleanor Callado has been a high caliber competitor for quite some time now, starting when she was still a junior in the BCA ranks. In addition to competing, she was an instrumental part of the organizing committee of this t o u r, b r i n g i n g a player’s perspective to all of the planning. After suffering a tough 7/6 loss in the opening match against Mai Schieck, she 2nd Kim Benson gained more and more momentum winning six matches in a row on the one-loss side. She was unable to keep that momentum going when she faced off with good friend and competitor, Mary Rakin in the quarterfinal match where she

15

was left in 4th place. Mary Rakin has done her part to keep the Rakin name synonymous with winning. She started off winning her first round match; she stumbled in her 2nd round and found herself on the one-loss side earlier than usual. She showed her mettle winning six matches to reach the semi-final match. Many were thinking we might have our own sisters’ finals (tennis isn’t the only sport with highly competitive sister acts) if she could get past Kim Benson. A determined Kim held Mary at 3rd place. Coming off a huge 2009 ACS Nationals 8-ball win, Kim Benson was ready to take on all comers. She played strong and confidently, remaining undefeated through her first 4 matches. In the hot-seat match against Michelle Rakin, she fought a tough battle where the match went to the hill before Michelle sent Kim to the oneloss side and another tough match-up against her little sister, Mary. Kim wasn’t to be dissuaded by this loss. She picked herself up and earned her way back into the finals for a re-match against Michelle, but it wasn’t in the 3rd Mary Rakin cards for Kim. She finished in 2nd place after a very tough battle. The always competitive and gracious Michelle Rakin stepped into the winner’s circle by remaining undefeated the entire tournament. Both singles and team competition for the weekend were broken down into 3 divisions: Youth - Ages 9-13 Minor - Ages 14-17 Major - Ages 18-20 Male singles events recorded 300 entries while the female singles edged 100 entries. In total, over 400 shooters would square-off in a double elimination format that would lead to some great shooting and refreshing sportsmanship. The Team competition, consisting of 3-player s q u a d s , would reach 117 teams this year. These great numbers represented an incredible 28 Charter Holders from an impressive 12 states and 2 Canadian Chandra Campion (MN) Provinces. This made up for a total of over 500 ENTRIES in the team and singles events. State Representation Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania,

The 19th Annual VNEA Junior Pool Championships Invade Lincoln With A Flood Of Excited, Youthful and Talented Pool Shooters The Pershing Center • Lincoln, Nebraska June 25 - 28, 2009 The VNEA and host operator V.V.S. put on another “incredible” Junior Championships with everyone in attendance boasting about the event! With a total of 80 Valley Pool Tables layed out in a split level design, the VNEA To u r n a m e n t Committee prepared a perfect setting for pool! On Thursday afternoon, the VNEA opened its tournament doors early, as usual, to hundreds of Rachel Byrket (IA) juniors lined up outside to begin their practice routines and play in one or more of twenty-seven singleelimination mini-tournaments. As the young shooters entered the center you could see their faces light up with excitement and fascination. For most of these players, they have never seen 80 pool tables set up under one roof, not to mention an impressive control stage and a mountainous trophy display which was beautifully displayed. Early on Friday morning, the youthful and excited shooters arrived at the center ready to battle it out in Singles competition. Each player was trying to make it into the finals bracket of their division where they would begin their final surge toward an international VNEA title later that evening. After a great 1st Youth Teams: Shooters Sharpshooters (KS) day of awesome pool, the tables were set for the final

This part of the ceremony is very important to the players as they all take great pride in their state, province and country. An informative Control Stage kept the players updated with critical tournament information and was led by Junior Tournament Director, Mike Fowler fromWK Music & Vending in Columbus, Ohio. Mike’s staff worked diligently to get through the enormous amount of matches that were played throughout the weekend. The Tournament Committee Staff consisted of the following... I held the tournament in memory of a great pool player and a good friend who taught me not only how to play physically but mentally as well. Those of you that knew Johnny would probably describe him as a raspy voiced man with a New York accent who smoked Pall Mall non-filter cigarettes like a chimney. People would also say that he could play straight pool and one pocket with the best players during his time. With a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and smoke in his eye I would see him run rack after rack in straight pool. Most people knew him as a pool player and nice guy. I had the chance to live with him for a few months. He was a great man with a deep love for his family and friends. Johnny had some regrets, but don’t we all. He also had great accomplishments winning many top events in billiards. He also was known to play for money. Johnny had enough action stories to write three books. He will always be remembered as a great player in the history of billiards. The balls were racked, the lights were on, the players were ready; with 22 in the field the showdown was about to begin. In the first round Joe Alvarez defeated Trin Lue, a young player from California with a great love for the game. Joe found himself now playing another young player from California, Curtis Johnson. Curtis has a great break with good cue ball control. Curtis had a big lead on Joe early in the match, with a race to eight Joe looked like he was barbequed. Curtis got a little out of shape and missed. With the window open Joe stepped up to the table and won game after game bringing the set to hill hill. In the last game Joe was running the table. He missed on the eight ball and Curtis moved ahead. Another good match was yet another California kid, Josh Ulrich playing James Milasso. James is a local with a good game but Josh was way too strong and defeated James. Next Josh played another local, Bill Stock. Bill played solid through the match and knocked Josh to the one loss side. Bill moved on and found himself playing another local and well known player, Walter Glass. Walter was playing strong and Bill just couldn’t get it rolling. With a victory over Bill, Walter found himself playing for the Hot Seat. Another great player was a young kid from Canada, John Morra. John played great pool with a lead in every match he played. John moved through the field like an avalanche down a mountain taking everything in his path and there was nothing anyone could do to stop him. With victories over Tre Baker, Rich Burns and Justin Whitehead, he was now matched up with Walter Glass playing to be the King of the Hill. John had a lead on Walter. John was out breaking the field and nothing was different in this match. Walter was watching his break and got a game under his belt and took advantage. Walter started breaking the balls good and was pulling himself back into the match. For the first time in the tournament, someone was putting a little heat on Morra. Walter with another great break and a good look at the table missed a shot on the one ball that hung up on that shelf of the Diamond table. John was back at the table and for Walter, this was not good. John finished up that game and took over the match from there, moving Walter over to the one loss side. Walter had a chance to get another crack at Morra, but he would have to get by Rich Burns. Rich who was put on the one loss side by John earlier in the tournament was also trying to get a crack at playing John again. Rich and Walter went back and forth. Rich, with his steady play and solid breaks was able to out run Walter and mover on to play John Morra. In the finals, the race goes up to a race to eleven. If Rich wins he will have to beat John again in a race to eight. With a true double elimination, John was looking good. Watching John play was like watching a crane operator. With a slow but steady hand, never moving too fast or too slow, never missing a ball he should make and never getting out of shape. John was too much for Rich on this day. John went on to claim victory and take first place in the first John Ervolino Memorial Tournament held at Mickey’s. I thought it was cool that John Morra won the first Ervolino memorial tournament because they both have the same first name, too bad Morra is from Canada and not New York! Congratulations to John Morra and thanks to all the players who participated including Ashea Erdahl, Frank Tran, Randy Chugg and Steve Wilson. Thanks for your support. Without you there wouldn’t be a tournament. See you at the next tournament. Visit us at www.mickeyscues.com and check out our calendar for upcoming tournaments during 2009. - The Pool Fly 1st $800 John Morra 2nd $350 Rich Burns 3rd $250 Walter Glass 4th $150 Justin Whitehead 5/6th $105 Jose Alvarez/Bill Stock

The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) crowned four winners in the 2009 BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships. A total of 92 junior pocket billiard players gathered in the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University on July 23-26 to compete for the title in 4 divisions. In the 19-and-under boys’ division, Landon Shuffett of Greensburg, KY, sailed through the winners’ bracket, while Liz Lovely of Centerville, OH, went undefeated in the 19-and-under girls’ division. Brendan Crockett of Bell Canyon, CA, thrived in the 14-andunder boys’ division and Briana Miller of Allentown, PA, won her third consecutive title in the 14-and-under girls’ division. Winning his third consecutive Junior National title, the previous two in the 14-and-under boys’ division, 15 year old Shuffett steadily climbed his way through the winner’s bracket. Shuffett handily won his first four matches before facing the 2008 runner-up, Nick Tafoya, winning 9-5. Shuffett managed to maintain his pace by defeating Jesse Engel of Columbia Heights, MN, 9-6 before claiming the hot seat as the only undefeated contestant in the 46 player division. Engel’s made his trek through the winner’s bracket before taking a slight detour to the one-loss side after losing to Shuffett and thrilled the audience with a 9-7 win over Tafoya before getting back on track to play in the finals against Shuffett. Shuffett trailed after the first 2 games, then, shifted gear to win the match 11-6, becoming the tournament champion. In the 19-and-under girls’ division, Liz

Lovely and Chelsea Hardwick went undefeated through the winner’s bracket before performing a thrilling hill-hill match with Lovely prevailing 7-6. Hardwick was determined to have a re-match with Lovely, but fell short to yet another heartbreak match, losing 6-7 to Jauslinn Arnold of Bakersfield, CA. The fierce Arnold was making her way through the one-loss side after losing to Lovely in the second round, but came up short in the finals. Lovely took charge, winning the match 9-3 and seized the championship title. In the 14-and-under boys’ division, it was Brendan Crockett and Bryce Lepak who fought for king of the hill of the winner’s bracket, with each losing a total of only 9 and 8 games respectively before facing each other in the 32 player division. Crockett sent Lepak to the one-loss side to face

Billy Thorpe of Dayton, OH. Thorpe marched through the one-loss side, winning 8 straight matches for a chance to do better than his second place finish last year. Crockett remained steady and completed his mission with a 9-5 win, earning the championship title. Briana Miller faced a determined Taylor Reynolds of Waterville, ME, winning their first of two matches 7-5 before winning the final match 7-1 to earn the championship title. In addition to trophies and prizes, the winners of the four divisions were awarded $1,000 in academic scholarship funds and earned a trip to represent the U.S. in the upcoming World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) Junior World 9-Ball Championships, which will be held in Nicaragua this November. Seventeen four person teams gathered at The Soundview in Everett, WA Easter weekend!? How about next time looking at a real calendar and not a pool tournament calendar. That was Fantastic! The teams also had to deal with a restriction. There could only be two masters per team. However this was Danny’s Boyz: Dan Louie, Jeff Jimenez, Cris Suarez, Sean Kiani good because almost all of the teams were evenly matched. Out of the seventeen teams, with a few good rolls and draw’s anyone of them could have won the tournament. Bradford Wins PORTLAND, OR-July 7, 2009 It was a small 14.1 Tournament at Sam's Billiards on July 7, with only 8 players in attendance, the fewest in the past year of monthly tournaments. This allowed Bill Bradford to win his first tournament in a year and a half. "I'm convinced practicing doesn't help my game. My first time at the table in a month I ran 22 balls." Bill won all five matches, including two against Eric Gibson, first-time 14.1 tournament player from Washougal, WA. Frank Kincl had the high run of the day at 17. Frank and Steve Pulido decided to split the 3rd and 4th prize pot rather than play out their final match. The final results were as follows: 1st 2nd 3/4

$45 Bill Bradford $30 Eric Gibson $15 Steve Pulido & Frank Kincl

High Run: 17 – Frank Kincl The next monthly Straight Pool Tournament at Sam's Billiards will be Sunday, August 7. The entry fee is $12. The tournament starts at 11 AM.

Running a Successful Tournament is a Team Effort

Diable Valley Pool League

By Bret Baker

Ever wonder what goes into preparing for a tournament the size of the BCAPL National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada? Months of planning and a lot of teamwork! The team that took on that challenge this year was Bad Boys Billiard Productions headed by Ric Jones. Ric and his team took on the task of running the largest pool tournament in the world which had been run very well for years by Gary Benson. Ric Jones does not like to considered the “Tournament Director.” “It’s really more of a tournament direction team,” says Ric. At this year’s BCAPL National tournament that team consisted of Ric and Bonnie Jones, Bill Stock, Bull, Kenneth Jones, Chris Willoughby, Rick Donner, Janet Okamoto, Bret McKinney, Ron Gillamett, Sara Phipps, Billy Jaeger, Thomas Todd and Calvin Hatfield. If you had a question about where you were on the tournament chart, if you had a problem with a ball stuck in a table, or where your tournament match was being reassigned to, there is a good chance you got to meet some of these fine people. This year’s tournament featured a brand new computer system known as the CTS Tournament Tracker. This is the result of a lot of hard work by one Bret McKinney. I first met Bret while he was testing the computer system at last years Bar Table Championships in Reno, Nevada. I then saw how well it ran at the Western BCA Regional Tournament in Lincoln City, Oregon. The CTS Tournament Tracker allows a player to access all of the tournament charts online by simply typing in the players name, you can see what divisions they played, which matches they won/lost, scores and how their opponents finished in the tournament. If you have not seen this tremendous program yet, you can access it from the BCAPL website at www.playbca.com. Ric says running an event the size of the BCAPL National Championships is about 8,000 times more pressure than those smaller events because with a lot more divisions and a lot more players there are a lot more things that can go wrong. Also the team must be ready to handle any situation which may arise. This year marked the first time in the history of this tournament that a player decided to take a swing at a referee. Chaos ensued and over 100 matches came to a screeching halt on Saturday night. There was no procedure to follow in a situation like this, it came down to quick thinking and taking action by the tournament direction team that helped diffuse the situation and get the tournament running again. Rick Donner was credited with quick action in calling for hotel security as many players came to the aid of the two referees who were involved in the situation. Ric Jones then took the microphone and made the announcement, “Players return to your tables!” This did not immediately take effect so he went one step further in letting players know they had 2 minutes to return to there tables or they would be forfeited. When you have paid the entry fees, flown to Vegas and put the time and effort into a national tournament, the last thing you want to do is be forfeited, so players began returning to there tables and as things got settled down, matches resumed. By the end of the event the Tournament Direction Team and the Referees had discussed how to handle an event like this in the future and new policies were in place. Ric says his teams, which are usually smaller, run about 26 or 27 events a year. They have 160 7 ft. Diamond Smart Tables. Ric shakes his head and smiles when players come up and tell him how much money he is raking in with the coin drop. “If they only knew!” It is not cheap to keep this many tables in top playing condition and to haul them all over the country. Ric says they spent between $60,000 & $70,000 just in fuel last year. He estimates it will cost them $32,000 to recover the tables with new Simonis 860 Tour Blue cloth. Plus lease payment on the tables, paying his team members, etc. Keep this in mind the next time you are feeding tokens into the table. Editor’s Note: Remember to Thank the Tournament Director’s Team the next time you see them.

The Diablo Valley Pool League joined The Farrington’s Bar last July 12th to celebrate the re-opening of the new and improved remodeled bar. The participants enjoyed a great afternoon with newly re-felted tables and more flat TV screens which made the afternoon a pleasant one. The service as usual was excellent and we kept the bartender busy when 19 players showed up to play the event Our top male players made their presence felt, we collected a pot of $285

and top 4 players got paid. Five women showed up to compete on this tough field. FINAL STANDINGS AND MONEY PAID 1) $120 Jason Williams 2) $85 Feras Quadoura 3) $55 George Williams 4) $25 Jared Williams

What’s Happening in the Little Wooden Shed In July, we drove out to Marietta, GA to display some of our cues at the Southern Cue and Case Show that was held in conjunction with the Gem City 10 Ball Classic. The event was a great success, with many top players, cuemakers, case makers, etc.. We enjoyed meeting everyone. We plan to be a part of next year’s show, as well. We are adding a couple of new pages to our website. One is for our customers who want to show off their Crown Cues and share their stories. The other is a sort of index with pics and links to artistic poolers who would like to be easily located in one place. Look for these pages to be added in August. If you would like to know more, and/or be listed, write towebmaster@crowncues.biz Crown Cues Aug. - Sept. Events: During the whole month of August, we will be offering 15% Off all cues, including custom orders, during our annual Summer Melt Down Sale! Check it out! quietly and seemingly effortlessly dispatched her opponents one by one until she found herself in the finals. As she waited to see if sister, Mary would make it a Rakin sisters finale; she quietly sat on the sidelines just watching or was she actually stalking her prey so to speak? The final match was a battle of wills as finalist, Kim Benson, had the pressure of having to win the first set to force a second. Both players were strong and sure. When the opportunities presented themselves, they capitalized on the mistakes of the other but in the end it was Michelle who was victorious. This tour wouldn’t be possible without the support of the host poolrooms, their staff and owners who not only provide the venue but also financial support.
