It took Shane Van Boening four matches to move among the winners' side final four in the 10-ball competition of Cue Sports International's 19th annual US Bar Table Championships. Through those four matches, he was giving up just under five racks in each of the race-to-7 contests. From among the winners' side final four in a fresh, double elimination bracket, he picked up his pace a little, giving up only a single game in a match againstJosh O'Neal that set him up to face Stevie Moore in the battle for the hot seat. Moore sent Van Boening to the semifinals, from whence he returned to win both sets of a double elimination final to capture the event title. The $6,000-added, 10-ball event drew 87 entrants to the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, NV. In one of two, preliminary double elimination brackets, each of which yielded two winners' side and two lossside opponents advancing to a final and new double elimination bracket of eight players, Van Boening almost ended up on the loss side, as Amar Kang battled him to double hill in his third round of play. Van Boening hung on to win, and then defeated Glen Atwell 7-5 to become one of the final four winners. Moore's most serious challenge in the five rounds of play that led him among the final four winners came in his opening round match versus Ernesto Dominguez, who chalked up six racks against him. Three rounds later, John Morra got five. Combined, Moore's other three opponents - Richard Richeson, Corey Penrod and Jesse Engel - were only able to score a total of four racks against him.

Gabe Apollos gave up six in a third round match versus Greg Herada, but gave up only four total to his other three opponents, including a shutout over Ed Scott and a 7-2 win over Rodney Morris, which put Apollos among the final four. Josh O'Neal's toughest match of his five, which included a 7-2 win over Manny Chau and 7-4 win over Dennis Haar, was his last, in which Francisco Bustamante finished two back at 7-5. The victory moved O'Neal among the final four winners.

On the loss-side, Jerry Matchin, Larry Nevel, John Morra and Jesse Engel advanced to the new double elimination bracket. Matchin had been sent west in the second round

by Glenn Atwell, and won four straight, including a 7-4 win over Amar Kang, that put him among the final eight in the final, double elimination bracket. Nevel had fallen to Bustamante in his third match and battled back through three opponents - Derek Pogirski, Dennis Haar, and finally, Glenn Atwell - to reach the final eight.

Morra's nemesis on the winners' side had been Moore, who defeated him 7-5 in the fourth round. Morra chalked up wins over Chris McCreary, and Sean Morgan, before meeting and defeating Rodney Morris 7-4, and

advancing to the final bracket. Engel had been sent west by Moore in the final match of one of the preliminary brackets, and faced only one opponent on the loss-side of that bracket. A 7-2 win over Scott put Engel among the final eight.

In the final set of eight players, on the winners' side, Moore matched up against Apollos, as Van Boening drew O'Neal. On the loss-side, Engel met Morra, as Nevel squared off against Matchin.

Moore sent Apollos west 7-3, and moved into the hot seat match against Van Boening, who'd defeated O'Neal 9-1. Moore then sent Van Boening to the event semifinals with a 7-5 win and awaited what proved to be his fateful return.

On the loss-side, Apollos picked up Nevel, who'd downed Matchin 7-3. O'Neal drew Engel, who'd gotten by Morra by the same score, 7-3. Engel advanced to the quarterfinals with a double hill win over O'Neal, and was joined in those quarterfinals by Nevel, who finished Apollos' day 7-3. Nevel then defeated Engel 7-3 to pick up Van Boening in the semifinal match.

Van Boening gave up only two racks in the semifinal match to earn a double elimination finals rematch against Moore. He then gave up only a single rack in the opening set of those finals. Moore reached the hill first, ahead by three in the second set, but Van Boening came back to knot things at double hill and then, drop the last 10-ball to secure the event victory.

Rebecca Wagner won the $1,000-added Women's Division 10-Ball Tournament, which drew 24 entrants. She got by Beth Fondell twice to do it; once in the hot seat match and again, in the finals. Wagner had sentMelinda Bailey west 5-1 to get into the hot seat match, as Fondell was busy surviving a double hill match against Cindy Sliva. Wagner then shut Fondell out in the hot seat match.

Fondell moved over to the semifinals for a rematch against Sliva, who'd hung on to defeat Melinda Bailey in a double hill quarterfinal match. Fondell earned the rematch versus Wagner with a double hill victory in the semifinals. Fondell put up a better fight in her second match against Wagner, but Wagner prevailed 5-3 to win the women's title.

BY GREG KOCH - CSI STAFF The 19th annual US Bar Table Championships are in full swing at the new location in the spacious Grand Sierra Hotel & Casino located in Reno, Nevada. The new location provides a substantial amount of additional space for this annual event and will easily accommodate anticipated future growth. The new location has been well received by everyone involved, including the players, vendors and the tournament directors. Additionally, the Grand Sierra has provided super low room rates for everyone, making it more affordable to come and play in all the events and providing a more enjoyable overall experience. CSI is very excited with these new changes and is looking forward to making this event better and better every year. The USTBC runs from February 13th thru February 20th.

This year the event had 128 entries in the Men’s Open 9 ball and 28 entries in the Women’s 9 Ball. CSI has added over $25,000 to the prize fund, resulting in over $70,000 being handed out to the players in total prize money. There is also a All Around Bonus of $4,250 that was added for the top points leaders in the 3 divisions.

Stan Tourangeau went undefeated in the 9 ball division to take 1st place and $4700.

Stan sent Shane Van Boening to the losers bracket on the TAR TV table in a hill-hill match. Shane locked Stan up on the 4 ball and forced Stan to go up and down the table to hit the 4 ball near the end rail. Stan made a good hit and left Shane few options on a tough cut shot on the 4 near the rail. Shane had to put a little inside on it, due to him being blocked from a clean hit on it. Shane missed and left Stan an easy out from there.

Stan had to jump into the fire with Oscar Dominguez, who is having a very good year, in the hot seat match. Stan didn’t have as much trouble with Oscar, winning 9-5. Stan was then able to take a break and wait for the others to battle it out to see who would have to beat him twice.

Glenn Atwell knocked Shane Van Boening out and then knocked out Jesse Engle.

That left Oscar Dominguez and Glenn to battle it out to see who would get a shot at Stan and the Championship. Glenn sent Oscar packing with a 9-7 victory and then geared up for a battle with Stan that would require him to win 2 sets. Stan jumped out to a lead but Glenn would catch up and they would trade games near the end of the set. Stan had made a 9 ball on the break earlier in the set, which would spur Glenn to start checking out Stan’s rack, even though they were using the Magic Rack.

Stan got to the hill first at 8-7, then Glenn won the next game. Just as in the 10 ball, the finals were determined by someone needing to win 2 sets and both divisions went

Stan Tourangeau hill-hill in the first set, with the victor being the one that only needed one set. It was Stan’s break and Glenn inspected the rack and nodded ok, they shook hands, then Stan proceeded to make the 9 ball on the break. Congratulations to Stan Tourangeau on his 1st place finish, and Glenn on his 2nd place finish. Stan picked up $4700 for 1st and Glenn pocketed $3150 for 2nd.

In the Women’s 9 Ball division, Rebecca Wagner once again won the hot seat match.

Melissa Little, after being knocked to the losers bracket in the 3rd round, would plow her way to the finals. Melissa would need to beat Rebecca twice and started off by winning the 1st set. Rebecca picked up her game though, and finished off Melissa to win her 2nd Division title. Congratulatons to Rebecca on her strong showing and Melissa for grinding out the long road to the finals from the losers bracket. Rebecca picked up $825 for 1st and Melissa pocketed $500 for 2nd.

The 8 ball is in full swing Saturday, with both the Men’s and Women’s division, and also a WorldPPA 9 Ball tournament being ran alongside it. They will battle all day with the Men’s final scheduled for Sunday at 7:00 pm Pacific and the women’s at 3:30 Pacific.

Bill Stock with Jeff Beckley 8-Ball at the 19th US Bar Table Championships

The inaugural year at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, CSI’s 19th Annual US Bar Table Championships concluded Sunday, with Jeff Beckley going undefeated in the 8-Ball Division.

It was a week of championship caliber pool, with outstanding performances in all six divisions: both Open and Women’s 10-Ball, 9-Ball and 8-Ball and with a record 502 entries.

The 8-Ball Division kicked off on Friday, with 189 entries in the Men’s Division and 46 entries in the Women’s Division. All tables were in play, as there were three tournaments being contested simultaneously, the Men’s and Women’s USTBC 8-Ball, and a WorldPPA handicapped 9-Ball Tournament.

Jeff Beckley, who hails from Indiana, had an impressive tournament run. Jeff finished undefeated and notched wins over notable players such as Jose Parica, Larry Nevel, Francisco Bustamante and Robb Saez. His win/loss totals were an impressive 45-18.

Jeff started out the final day, with a hotseat match with Francisco Bustamante. Jeff played solid and capitalized on a few uncharacteristic mistakes from Francisco. Francisco was a favorite going in, as he had a very impressive run on Saturday. Jeff sent Francisco to the loser’s bracket with a 5-3 win and then went back to his room to relax until his 7:00 match.

Meanwhile, Robb Saez was all business on Sunday. His eyes were set on Jeff Beckley, but he would have to beat a host of champions to get there. Robb started off by knocking out Rodney Morris 5-2, and then sent Larry Nevel packing with a 5-0 win. Next up for Robb was Oscar Dominguez, who was having a great tournament himself.

Oscar was sent to the loser’s side late Saturday night by Francisco Bustamante, in a match where Oscar would get only two shots. Francisco broke and ran the first game. When Oscar broke the next game, the cue ball got kicked in and Francisco ran out. Then, Francisco broke and ran out. When Oscar broke the next game, the cue ball was kicked in again, and Francisco ran out. Francisco then broke and ran the final game, for a 5-0 win. In all, Oscar had only two shots in the match, both break shots.

Oscar would give Robb all he could handle though on Sunday, and they went hill-hill with Robb needing to bank his last solid cross side and draw his cueball into the 8-ball, which was tied up on another ball. It was a do or die shot, where any part of the shot going wrong would result in an easy out and a win for Oscar. Undaunted, Robb drilled the bank and drew softly into the 8-ball, freeing it up for an easy shot to win the set.

Up next for Robb, was Francisco Bustamante. Robb had everything rolling for him though at this point, and great play and a few rolls allowed him to move on to the finals with a 5-4 victory over “Django.”

The finals got underway at 7:00 pm with Robb Saez needing to beat Jeff Beckley twice. Up until this point, it seemed destiny was on Robb’s side, but Jeff was not going to be denied.

First Jeff got an early lead at 3-0, and then Robb crept back with a couple of games. Jeff got to the hill first, and had a few opportunities to close out the match, but couldn’t cash in on them. Jeff would need to keep his composure and put his missed opportunities behind him,

Stacy Allsup if he wanted to end this in one set. Jeff would keep it together, and with a straight in 8-ball down the rail, he won his first USBTC 8-Ball Title.

Congratulations to Jeff Beckley with his 1st place finish and Robb Saez for finishing 2nd.

Francisco Bustamante finished 3rd and Oscar Dominguez came in 4th. First paid $5700, 2nd paid $3300, 3rd paid $2000 and 4th paid 1200.

On the Women’s side, Stacy Allsup went undefeated and matched up with Melissa Little in the finals. Melissa would need to beat Stacy two sets to come out on top, but fell short, losing the first set 4-2. Congratulations to Stacy Allsup on her 1st place finish pocketing $875 and Melissa Little on her 2nd place finish and a $550 prize.

In the All Around Bonus, there was a three way tie for 1st place, between Shane Van Boening, Glenn Atwell and Jeff Beckley. They split $3500 in added Bonus money provided by CSI. On the Women’s side, Rebecca Wagner took home an additional $500 for 1st place and Stacy Allsup took home $250.

STORY AND PHOTO BY SUZANNE SMITH February 25-26, 2012 60 players from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia converged on Malarkey’s Pool & Brew for the first of three Annual tournaments held in lovely Tacoma, WA. Spirits were high during start of play and a superb field of players came out to compete.

Surprisingly, both Glenn Atwell and Stan Tourangeau were not present, fresh off their top performances at the US Bar Table Championships. There was still plenty of great action to keep both competitors and spectators enthralled for the two day event, where top payout was $1000 and bragging rights. Upcoming tournaments include the 2nd Annual 10 Ball Summer Scorcher in August and Thanksgiving Classic in November. Weekly tournaments are also available for testing your skills: Sunday- Barbox 8 ball, Tuesday & Sundays- 211, Wednesdays & Fridays- 9 Ball on the 9 Footers. An absolutely fantastic menu and jukebox make Malarkey’s the place to be for all your pool room needs.

The tournament was run on 10 Brunswick Gold Crowns with Red Circle Cue Balls. Matches were a race to seven on both sides, and the final was a true double elimination format. Rack your own with Magic Racks, Vegas Rules, and 3 Foul Rule were in effect for the duration of the event. Local grandmaster Andrea Saenz Maes was Tournament Director for the event and kept the boys in line. Only two ladies signed up for the Open event, so no Top Woman was awarded.

Rail2Rail Productions provided a free live stream for the event. Please check out their website for an up to date schedule. Several players braved the booth, and joined R2R staff Annie Bounds and Alisha Rogers for commentating live action.

Out of the sixty players, 9 hailed from British Columbia including defending February Freeze Champion Lance Mason, and 2009 Men’s Grandmaster BCA National Singles Champion Simon Pickering. The Canadian contingent dominated play; seven out of the final sixteen players brought back on Sunday were from BC. Sunday match ups on the A side included Mike Vidas vs. Brady Golan, Eddie Carrido vs. Dan Louie, Simon Pickering vs. Paul Potier, and Paul Marquez vs. Damian Pongpanik. Mike V, Dan L, Simon P, and Paul M would survive their morning round matches (three of which went hill-hill). Dan then defeated Mike V while Simon was busy defeating Paul M. Simon handily defeated Dan L as well to claim his spot in the final, sit back and watch his comrades battle it out on the B side. Whoever came through would need to beat him twice.

While waiting I had a chance to speak with Simon on some of his day to day and future goals.

Simon owns and operates West Coast Pool Tables (westcoastpooltables.com) and is currently financing the West Coast Classic Tour in BC. They have 5 tournaments annually and are hoping to add a qualifier for the Canadian Championships to the fray. Some of Simon’s scheduled pool tournaments include competing at the US Open 10 Ball Championship and BCA Grandmaster Singles in Vegas this May, and returning back to Malarkey’s in November for the Thanksgiving Classic which usually draws close to a full field of 128.

Clay Belvoir. Rich, Lance, Don, and Clay would advance through their morning matches.

Fresh off their first losses, both Brady and Paul defeated Rich and Don to continue in the tournament. Lance and Clay continued their Sunday winning streaks defeating Eddie and Damian in the second Sunday round. Down to the final eight players, 5 Canadians remained (with one in the hot seat), so a 50% chance of an all Canadian final. Lance and Paul P both continued their excellent play defeating Brady and Clay, leaving them in T7/8th. Both Paul P and Paul M were defeated in the next round (T5/6th), forcing another Canadian departure with Mike V and Lance squaring off. Mike played nearly flawless during the match and defeated Lance 7-0. The last man standing between Mike V and an all Canadian final was Mr. Dan Louie. Mike and Dan were both hungry to reach the finals and gave spectators a great shot as they duked it out, Mike reaching the hill first, but then faltering in game 13, which would ultimately be his last opportunity to shoot. Dan rack out game 13 and then broke and ran hill-hill to defeat his opponent.

Dan is a local hero in the Northwest, former World Champion and top Regional Grandmaster, also the house pro at The Parlor in Bellevue, WA. Dan has a long list of accolades under his belt, but continues to strive for excellence both on and off the table.

The Final would end up being an epic battle. Simon fresh off his break jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after some uncharacteristic mistakes by Dan allowed Simon at open tables with Ball in Hand in games 1, 2, and 3. Appearing shaken, Dan then missed a long straight shot on the 2 ball to give Simon his fourth consecutive run out. Not one to give in, Simon and Dan exchanged the next couple racks to leave the set at 5-2 in favor of Simon. Knowing that he would have to step up significantly to have a chance, Dan pressed with all of his might and stormed back to win the next 5 racks to close out the first set.

The second set was more phenomenal play by Dan as he continued on a 4 game run.

Precision safety play and excellent shot making skills kept Simon at bay. Simon was able to run out rack 5 to get on the board, but Dan was not to be denied. Dan jumped on a missed opportunity in racks 7 and 8 to close out the set 7-1. Congratulations to both Dan and Simon for an amazing event. Both players showed what heart and class are capable of under the stress of extreme competition.

“I wish that a major league would create a pro tour.

They are the ones that are doing really well and it makes sense to have one. If you think about it, what level do the amateurs go after leagues? They should move up to a advanced pro level.” Gabe says.

Have you approached anyone about your ideas?

“No, but I should.”

Next up, James Baraks originally from Rock Island, IL now residing in Houston Where are you living these days?

“Houston, TX.” Is there a reason why you’re down there?

“Work is better for my wife there and my kids have better schooling.”

So as far as pool is concerned, are there better/more tournaments in Houston?

“If you live in the Houston area, you can play in a weekly tournament every night. But if you want to travel to Houston its really not worth it.”

What do you think is going to help pool in this bad economy?

“To me… I love pool but I personally think it’s a dying sport. Its sad but in time I hope it gets better.”

What do you think is going to help pool get to be better?

“I wish we could get some business people involved with our sport and stop relying on players to run our industry. Or maybe even get into the Olympics someday?”

So in the end, after spending some time with the players, I realized how much they love the game, socialize, compete, and chit chat to speak their mind.

Do you ever find yourself trying to help a new player who has no clue about aiming? Do you ever have that problem yourself? If so, here is a simple training aid that gives the student a specific spot to line up on for any shot.

This powerful little tool comes from Arthur “Babe” Cranfield who won championships over a 35 year career culminating in the Straight Pool World Championship in 1964. Cranfield has the highest reported practice run of 768 at straight pool (14.1 continuous). A friend of mine was visiting in Cranfield’s home town of Syracuse and saw him run over 200 balls five nights in a row.

Two dimensions are critical.

The distance from the tip to the interior point must be 1 1/8th inches exactly. That’s the radius of a pool ball. The total length should be 2 1/4 inches or the diameter of a pool ball.

In his book, “The Straight Pool Bible,” Cranfield says that he considered writing a whole book about The Arrow, as he calls it. He also states that he personally finds it useful when he has trouble remembering the aim on some kind of shots. If Babe finds it helps his game, maybe it will help yours or your

To find the aiming point for any shot, place the Arrow as in the diagram with it’s interior point even with the edge of the object ball and directly under the contact point for the shot. The body of the Arrow is aligned with the direction of the shot. This puts the tip of the Arrow exactly at the center of the ghost ball. Remember that the ghost ball is the location of the cue ball when cue ball contacts the object ball.

One system of aiming uses Direction of object ball Contact point the ghost ball directly. The player visualizes the ghost ball and then makes the cue ball take the place of the ghost ball. There is another aiming system called the “inch and an eighth” system which tells the player to aim the cue ball to pass over a point on the cloth 1.125 inches out from the cueball/object-ball contact point. It is geometrically equivalent to the ghost ball method since that point is where the ghost ball is touching the cloth but it is also hard for some people to visualize.

There is one last thing to worry about when using the Arrow and that is throw.

In the shot shown at the top of the diagram, the object ball will be thrown slightly to the left as the cue ball rubs across it during contact. In order to correct for that, you will need to adjust the Arrow slightly so that the object ball is aimed to the right of the pocket (for a cut to the right). Once you get the hang of the Arrow, you will see for each shot how much throw effect there is.

The Arrow gives a clearer way to visualize the shot because the tip of the Arrow is an actual, visible point to aim at. If you place the Arrow carefully, all the guesswork is taken out of the aiming part of the shot and all you have to do is line your stick up through the center of the cue ball

Titanic Shot (aka The Dream Shot)

Titanic Shot (aka The Dream Shot) The Titanic is a combination of the Rempe Eight in One and The Butterfly shots. However, it also features two additional balls in front of each side pocket. The set up is the biggest challenge to the Titanic Shot because so many things can go wrong. But the shot is worth the effort as you’ll treat your fans to the sight of 14 balls going in on one shot!

Place two balls so that they are hanging over the edge of Pockets A and B. Aim down the exact center of the table.

Strike the cue ball just a little above center with a medium hard to hard stroke (it depends on the table). Then get set to watch balls start flying into all six pockets.

An Iceberg in Barcelona

I used to call this shot the Dream Shot, but while preparing for a TV special called Carom Christmas in Barcelona the name was changed to the Titanic. The show was an hour of entertainment that featured trick shots on a pool table and a billiard (carom) table. I performed the pool shots and Danny Sanchez and Mr. Perea executed the billiard shots. They also had a number of celebrities on the show.

The show had a live audience of about 100 people and 11 cameras. It took about 10-12 hours to be taped. The show appeared on TV3, which is one of the top government channels. For the month of December Carom Christmas got better ratings than any other program.

I sent diagrams of the shots I was going to use to the producer and writer about a month before the show so they could writer the script. Jose Farras, the creator and writer of the

show, changed the name to the Titanic. For the program, I was scripted to say that, “I all this shot the Titanic Shot and I’m going to sink every ball in one shot.” I was successful in making all of the balls on my first attempt as planned. Now, Farras, who was also the MC, picked up the cue ball and says, “Mike, you didn’t sink all of the balls. What about his one?”

I replied, “Farras, that’s the iceberg.”

The crowd loved it.

I now like to call tis shot the Titanic because I have an out in case all of the balls fail to drop.

Should one or more remain on the table, I call them the survivors.

THE LION LEAPS 2nd Consecutive Swanee Win

Named for beloved southern California player, Jay Swanson, the 16th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament (“the Swanee”) was hosted February 4-5 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. A tournament steeped in tradition, the event is a virtual who’s who of west coast US and Pacific Rim players. Produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by Hard Times Billiards, CSI and the Magic Ball Rack, the event is known for being a two day grinder with a heady 192 player field of heavy hitters.

It is no small feat to cash in this event, but this year history took place. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan won for a second consecutive year surviving a litany of fellow well known names including former Swanee champions Dave Hemmah (1996), Mitch Ellerman (2009), Amar Kang (2006) and the only other two time winner Morro Paez (1999 and 2001). Additionally, “The Lion” took out 2012 US Mosconi Cup team member Rodney Morris and “Mad Max” Eberle who himself has finished in the top three of the Swanee field 3 years (2005, 2011, and 2012). It was Eberle who initially knocked Pagulayan to the one loss side in the seventh round of the winner’s bracket. “The Lion” heaped revenge upon Eberle in the semi-finals sending “Mad Max” to the bleachers late Sunday night 7-2.

After two days and 16 rounds the 192 field was now down to two players. In the middle of the night surrounded by a room full of dedicated spectators, the single race to 11 finals was between Oscar “The Big O” Dominguez and Pagulayan. Dominguez’s road to the hot seat included the take down of Nick Spano, Corey Harper, Jim Hennessy, Brendan Crockett, Santos Sambajon Jr., Rodney Morris and Max Eberle.

In what can only be described as one of the most unique finals of any tournament, Pagulayan’s repeat win almost did not take place. “The Lion” dominated the match early and jumped to a quick 10-3 lead. Then in game 14 “The Lion” pocketed a tough but makeable back cut shot on the 9-ball for the match win. However, in a split second it was evident the cue ball would also drop giving Dominguez the game instead of Pagulayan the win.

The diminutive Pagulayan leaped in the air just as whitey wailed into a corner pocket. To add injury to insult when Pagulayan landed from his leap he sprained his calf and faced the rest of the match limping and having to adjust his stance to avoid further pain. Dominguez capitalized on the situation. Using strategic safety play “O” patiently took the score from 10-4 to 10-9. During those 5 games Pagulayan did have another opportunity to seal the deal but in a case of déjà-vu again scratched on a pocketed 9-ball.

The cue ball caught the tip of one pocket and ricochet the ball into another pocket. In this situation it is hard not to think of that famous quote “It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it?” from The Color of Money.

The winning game came down to a moment of luck or redemption depending on the perspective. Dominguez again executed a strong safe leaving Pagulayan in the unenviable position of having to kick at the 1-ball for legal contact. Using sonic speed, Pagulayan sent the cue ball off a long rail, hit the one, then the rock careened off the opposite long rail into the pack of balls that housed the 9. The match money ball then gently rolled into a side pocket. This time whitey stayed securely on the table and “The Lion” was able to roar two years in a row.

Staying focused and not letting bad rolls and tangled up tables got Randy Ohrstrom of Spokane, Wash., back in the open 8-ball tournament held at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery in Spokane, Wash. on Feb. 25.

Ohrstrom hit a rough patch in the match for the driver’s seat when he lost 4-3 to Bill Harvey, also of Spokane, Wash.

Freshly deposited in the one-loss bracket, Ohrstrom quickly went to work beating Chris White 4-2. The loss gave White a third place finish.

Back in the tournament finale, Ohrstrom picked up his game routing Harvey 4-1, which included two matches decided by run out. With both players facing elimination, Ohrstrom continued dead stroke play, running out the first two tables of the third match. But the run out streak cooled off as fast as it heated up.

In the third rack, Ohrstrom got a bad roll and left himself hooked. A very quiet Harvey finally got a trip to the table from Ohrstrom’s foul. Harvey reciprocated two run outs of his own to tie it up at 2-2. Ohrstrom answered back with another break and run. The game cooled off as both players worked through a scratch a piece, a miss a piece, plus Ohrstrom threw in another ball-in-hand just for good measure. Harvey wrestled the game away from Ohrstrom to tie it up at 3-3.

In the nightcap, Ohrstrom never gave Harvey a chance to steal another game. With two balls down on the break,

Ohrstrom picked apart a difficult table which included a seemingly surrounded 8-ball for the break-and-run win.

Clay Skidmore put in the best comeback effort of the tourney. He lost his first match 4-2 to Ohrstrom. Skidmore took the next six matches 3-1, 3-2, 3-2, 3-0, 3-2, 4-2, before being eliminated by White 4-1, to finish in fourth place.

The tournament was played by Billiard Congress of America rules on 7-foot Shelti tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. Entry fee was $40 with $10 greens fees and $80 added. The total purse for this tournament was $1,240. The race was to four on the winner’s side and to three on the loser’s bracket. When the disqualifying matches ended in a payout, the loser’s bracket matches were a race to four.

Nuclear engineer “Chet” who created and built this great venue was honored in the grand style, which was indicative of the great efforts that he put into the creation of the hall.

The true “double elimination” event kicked off at noon on Saturday, February 25th with a race to 8 on both sides, and a winner break format.

Any one of the over 4,000 pool enthusiasts who tuned in this last weekend to Point Of View (POV) Pool’s free live internet coverage of this event, were treated to a multitude of not only legendary player match-ups, but also to a host of the unusual and dramatic antics that are ever present amongst these individuals.

Unfortunate news during the event was for Jun Almoite, who had to forfeit on Saturday to attend to “The Princess of Pool” - Mary Avina, who fell ill enough for hospitalization due to a high fever associated with a bout of the flu. The good news is, all is well and Mary is home and recovering. Whew!

Thanks to hall owner Chris Swart, a “$3000 Added” incentive packed the house and drew in 101 participants including many of the billiard worlds’ most elite players. Locals as well as those who tuned into the live internet stream got their pool fixes watching the likes of Rodney “The Rocket” Morris, Jose Parica, Louis Ulrich, Santos Sambajon, Rafael Martinez, House Pro Dave Hemmah of Hard Times - Bellflower, “Team Mexico” - Oscar and Ernesto Dominguez, Amar Kang, and last but not least, world renowned champion and two time consecutive winner of the infamous “Swanee” - Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan.

Early upsets in the event included last year’s winner, Santos Sambajon and runner up Oscar Dominguez.

Also knocked were Alex Pagulayan, and long time veteran Jose Parica was pushed early to the one loss side by “Combination” Jason Williams, who eventually shot his way up to 4th place in the event! Jason Williams put on quite a show during the weekend and was motivated by an eagerness to play and win over Rodney “The Rocket” Morris. Those who remained to stroke their way up the chain included Rodney Morris, Ernesto Dominguez, Kevin May, Amar Kang, Rafael Martinez, Ed Ramos, and eventual winner, Louis Ulrich.

Antics were abound during the course of the tourney with Amar Kang giving Alex Pagulayan a mini Golf swing lesson before their match, and quite a commentary stint on POV Pool’s live stream with local Emilyn Callado. In another match between Louis Ulrich and Hillary Morse, Louis slammed in the 9 a stunning 4 times during the break-shot, which unfortunately was re-spotted due to the rule associated with the rack your own format for this event. This proved to be a running theme on the “stream” table for many players during the break-shot, with the 9 ball usually en-route to the bottom left-hand corner and the 1-ball almost always hitting the rail below the left middle pocket and landing either into or very close to the top right-hand corner pocket. As a result, the best break show, which highlighted this phenomenon, was between Jason Williams and Rodney Morris, with a barrage of early 9 ball combinations and caroms that seriously shortened the length of the match. And in contrast was John Henderson vs. Arturo Rivera in a nip and tuck session, which literally lasted 16 games, and without either player having more than a 1-game lead.

Rounding up the finale was Louis Ulrich versus Ernesto Dominguez who would have had to win two races to 8 for the win due to the true double elimination format.

Ernesto took an early 3-0 lead over an obviously tired Louis and it looked like a double set was shaping up.

Louis however managed to come back to tie it up, and then rally back and forth to create a hill-hill thriller.

The nail biting final game found Ernesto running down to the perfectly lined up 9 with precision play, that is

until he fails to close; missing an almost straight 9-ball and leaving a medium difficulty cut for Louis. After the stunned railbirds exhaled, Louis got up and with nary a thought, and sliced the 9-ball effortlessly for the win over a disappointed but ever gracious Ernesto.

The top final 8 payouts were Louis Ulrich, $3,000, Ernesto $1700, Rodney Morris $900, Jason Williams $550, Kevin May and Amar Kang at $250, and Rafael Martinez and Ed Ramos at $150.

Walk in patrons and attendees alike were packed in all weekend long, taking advantage of the 3000 sq ft plus “viewing” area, ordering from a fantastic full menu, and topping it all off with a trip to the fully stocked bar complete with an efficient and friendly staff. In short, it was a setting for a pool player’s “Paradise”!

Wrapping up the event late Sunday night were semi final match-ups between Rodney Morris and Jason Williams, Kevin May and Amar Kang, and culminated with Louis Ulrich versus Ernesto Dominguez. A shocking display of “doesn’t ANYONE want this 7 ball?” commenced between Amar and Alex, which lasted several innings before Amar finally got the pesky maroon into a pocket.

Well known SF Bay Area Tournament Director/ Commentator, Gene Miller, says: “ WOW! LET’S DO THIS EVERY YEAR! That’s the concensus of Bob Beaulieu and virutally everybody else who was at the 19th US BAR TABLE CHAMPIONSHIPS at Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort February 13-19. Nothing against the Sands-Regency intended (we went there 46 times), but there’s a world of difference between the two locations. While the Sands was nice, the Grand Sierra is magnificent. Spacious, luxurious, numerous restaurants, entertainment, and gambling. The $25,250-added open events, 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball, attracted a huge crowd and should bring many more next year. Check out the “Tournaments” forum at www.azbilliards.com for the latest facts and interesting gossip. All events were double elimination played on forty Diamond bar boxes.

Ten additional Diamond 9-footers were brought in to accommodate 80 WorldPPA players in their first big 9-ball handicap championship.

Imagine the coordination this event demanded -- many of these players were enrolled in three tournaments simultaneously! The crew at Cue Sports International really knows how to handle a crowd. It was Mark Griffin (CSI) and Bob Beaulieu (WorldPPA) who got together and made this event such a success, even though Bob prefers to put himself way in

the background, insisting that “It was the players who really made this event happen.” Bill Stock and his BCA crew contributed tremendously to the success of the event, and all fifty Diamond tables were set up by Bad Boys. It was also a coming-out party for Frank Nordmann Jr’s new line of pool garb, “Play The Game.” (I have my event T-shirt and my hoodie is on order.) There were numerous vendors of pool clothing, cuemakers and everything else related to our game. As with so many recent events, a MAGIC RACK was at every table.”

Congratulations to Hunter Roberts (A+), a long time California Billiard Club player for taking 1st Place and winning $1,000.00 cash. Hunter’s list of opponents include races to 8 matches played with Linda Miyoshi (C+) 8/7; Carolyn Koo (C) 8/7; Louis Altes (A+) 8/6; Scott Mattingly (A-) 8/4; Chris McCreary (A) 8/4; then a Loss to Mike Kushlan (A) 4/8; and a win against George Pagulayan (A) 8/7 bringing him back to the Final table where he needed to beat Mike Kushlan twice – which he did; first 8/5 to put Mike Kushlan on the one-loss side then again 8/6 for the championship and 1st Place. A NEW BEGI WESTERN BCA’

Miguel Morfin The drive, the poor directions and the lack of signs pointing the way made the arrival at Quinault Beach all the sweeter. What a little jewel tucked away in Southwest Washington! The grounds were beautiful, the door and front desk staff were more than eager to help and the rooms were superb. If first impressions equaled success, this was going to be a great event. And it was. That is not to say that there weren’t some bumps and some lessons to be learned. It was pretty much what you would expect the first time at a new venue; bodes well for Quinault Beach 2013.

Mixed Scotch Doubles, Master and Open, was scheduled to start at 7pm Wednesday.

Bad Boys Productions had the tables and lights in place late Tuesday, so as the room filled Wednesday the players were able to get right on the tables. The room was abuzz; everyone anxious to get the competition underway.

Master Mixed Scotch Doubles started with 16 teams going after a 1st place prize of $1040. Slowly the field was whittled down to just two. Eddie Carrido (WWA) and Misty Saldana (TC) were waiting on the point to see who would meet them in the finals. Cindy Sliva (NPL) and Tommy Sliva (NPL), after having been sent to the back side by Eddie/Misty, won three tough matches to emerge and force a rematch with the only team to beat them. The final, as expected, was hotly contested with the two teams trading wins through the first 4 games. Score: 2-2. Game 5 went back and forth until Tommy just missed making a great safety and instead gave Eddie/Misty an open table and the run out for the win. The next two games were split. Game 8 was a tough loss for Cindy/Tommy with Misty breaking and the pair running the solids but hanging the 8-ball in the corner pocket. Cindy/Tommy looked good for the run out but, after disappointing position play, gave the table back to Eddie/Misty with a open shot on the 8-Ball. Score: 4-4. Game 9 was an unusual sloppy game on both teams’ part but Eddie/Misty prevailed, placing them on the hill. Score: 5-4 for Eddie/Misty. There was nothing sloppy about game 10. Misty broke and the team played perfectly and ran out.

Match over. Congratulations to Eddie and Misty.

Open Mixed Scotch Doubles, with a field of 25 teams, got on the tables with an eye towards the 1st place prize of $750 waiting at the finish line. The team of Mike Flanigan (TC) and Lisa Foster (TC) made their way to the point and a long wait for an opponent in the finals. Mike Gwinn (TC) and Cindy Perry (TC) almost made the point, being sent to the back side by Flanigan/Foster to play one more match for a trip to the finals. Gwinn/Perry prevailed over Martin Peters (TC) and Karina Harris (TC).

See a trend here? Thurston County came to play, taking the top 4 places. In the end, Flanigan/Foster took the 1st place prize home.

An event new to Western BCA tournaments, Men’s Open B Scotch Doubles debuted

Wednesday evening. Sign-ups were at the door and 7 teams signed up. When all was said and done, Jim Bolstrom/Dave Taylor (MTV) and Tom Hoshikawa/Jon Shimada (LTD) met in the finals with Bolstrom/Taylor winning and splitting the $400 1st place prize. Look for this division to be an option on the Casino Tour Scotch Doubles entry form in the future.

Singles got started at 9am Thursday morning. There were 6 singles divisions including a new one –Men’s A/Women Grand Master Singles. A total 184 players were playing for 6 crowns and the 1st place money that with them.

Men’s Master Singles fielded 24 players including 1 Grand Master. The competition was intense from start to finish. At the end of the day, Miguel Morfin (LTD) made his way to the point and a shot at the title. Rich Geiler (WWA) made a brief appearance on the back side, having to win only one match to get to the final. It proved to be a tough one with Ted Woodward (NPL/WWA) but Rich won and the final was set with an up and comer taking on one of Western BCA’s marquis players. It was a good one. As per the tournament format, Rich had to give Miguel 1 game. Miguel took full advantage of the small lead given him and took the first 2 games. Rich answered with a table run in game 3. Two balls into game 4, Miguel hooked himself and missed the kick for a good hit; therefore giving the table to Rich who then ran out. Score: 3-2 for Miguel. Miguel took the next 3 games, including a break and run, and a run out after a well played game on Rich’s part that included a timely break out. However, he stalled when he hooked himself and had to jump, resulting in a scratch. Miguel stepped up to the table and ran out. Score: 6-2 for Miguel and the hill. But Rich wasn’t quite finished and began a classic comeback, featuring 2 table runs to get tantalizingly close. Score: 6-5 for Miguel. Game 11 was all Miguel after Rich broke and made a ball but then missed.

Miguel stepped up to the table and proceeded to run out to secure the match and the 1st place prize of $700.

Eight Women Masters faced off for a 1st place prize of $460. Waiting on the point was a relatively new face, Regene Lane (LTD). Josie LeRoy (NPL/CPL), a familiar and feared face in the Women’s Master Division, was send to the back side one match short of the point. Josie beat out Nancy Measor (LTD) to get into the final but it was not meant to be. Regene took the match and the big check. Looks like there’s a new cue in town and she means business.

A total of 45 Men’s A players and 3 Women Grand Masters populated the field in the new Men’s Open A/Women’s Grand Master Singles division. Although outnumbered 15 to 1, the women showed why they are the best of our best – all of them made it to the money with Andrea Saenz-Maes finishing 4th, Cindy Sliva 5th/6th and Cindy Doty

Making his way to the point was Mike Siplivy, and that was where he waited until an opponent made his or her way from the back side. That ultimately proved to be Brian Dietzenbach who, like others before him, was sent down one match short of the point.

Brian had to play a tough Rick Tillett (TIO) and got the win. The final was set and was a good one. Brian took off like a shot getting the first two games including a table run the 2nd game after a dry break by Mike. Mike got the next two back and forth games to even the score at 2-2. Brian would get one more game before Mike closed out the match 6-3. He finished with an impressive table run after Brian scratched on the break and the crown was his. Congratulations Mike!

The Men’s Open B Singles was the largest field at 52. The men battled until just two were left in the final. Roberto Zacariaz (TC) and Ramon Farias (TC) met to decide who was champ. Roberto came out on top to claim the prize of $485. There were many first time players in this division who we will hopefully see at the 8-Ball championships in March.

At stake in the Women’s Open Singles was a 1st place prize of $450. All the 36 entrants wanted it. At the end, however, was Linda (Smitty) Smith (CPL) coming through on the point and Misty Saldana (WWA) coming out of the back side to meet her in the final.

The first final was long and grueling, going hill-hill. Misty prevailed to force a double dip. Smitty, however, was there to win and took the match and the $450 check.

Last of the Singles divisions to get on the tables was the Men’s Senior Singles. Those who were able to watch were treated to some great pool played by some of our most experienced and wily players. The men played long and hard until there were only two, Chuck Hassler (LTD) on the point and Bill Henderson (MTV), who came all the way through the back side after losing his first match. Bill took the first game, and then he and Chuck traded table runs, both from the break. Chuck got game 4 then Bill put the 8-ball in the side pocket on his 2nd shot to give Chuck game 5. Score: 3-2 for Chuck.

Bill took game 5 but lost game 6 after breaking and running 5 balls before fouling on his next shot and turning the table over to Chuck who cleared the table for the win and put himself on the hill. Score: 4-3 for Chuck. Game 8 started with Chuck breaking and running 3 balls before playing a safety. Bill also ran three balls before playing a safety.

But when he gave the table back, Chuck put an end to that pattern and ran the balls out to end the match and take the 1st place prize of $380.

With 3 Scotch Doubles and 6 Singles champions crowned it was time for the Teams to take over. The Men’s/Mixed Open B Division had 13 teams entered. Boom Wrench (Jeff

Webb, Patrick West and Fabian Jimenez – NPL/TC) and Elma Lanes #1 (Mike Ritter, Clark Waitt and Steve Waitt – all TC) made it to the finals and at the end of the match it was Boom Wrench with the title and the $735 1st place money to split.

The Women’s Team Division fielded 11 teams. NPL Chix (Robin Adams, Cindy Doty and Debi Leelyn – all NPL) found themselves in the final against Hot Shots (Julie Gill, Bernie Foster and Sherry Griffin – all LTD). The hard fought first set appeared to be leading up to a double dip and the Hot Shots held on to force a second go round. The NPL Chix proved just too tough, however, and closed out the second match and the title was theirs along with a check for $810.

That left only the Men’s/Mixed Teams to play out and crown a champion. Rodriguez (Ken Dodd, Ron OK and Dan Rodriguez – NPL) and Magic Act (Mike Jensen, Andrew Monstis and Sean Stevenson – NPL/CPL) found themselves in the final; Rodriguez taking the point and Magic Act coming through the back side. Magic Act had to force a double dip to have any chance at the title and they did just that; but Rodriguez was too much for Magic Act the 2nd time around and they hung on to take the title and the $2250 check for 1st place.

Besides the teams wrapping up there were a couple of other things going on that Sunday afternoon and evening. The Quinault Indian Nation expressed their desire to have their own tournament for tribal members only and Western BCA was happy to help make that happen. Earl Ralston acted as Tournament Director. Set up and the draw was at 10am and play went on throughout the day. 1st place was Stacy Rosalas, 2nd – Earl Ralston, 3rd – Pete Semoe and 4th – Vernon Joe. The Open 10-Ball Handicapped Singles also took place on Sunday. Coming into Sunday morning there were 22 entries but by time to draw, the total was up to 30, almost a full field of 32. Mike Jensen, Special Events Director, got the bracket set up then turned things over to his assistant, Robbin Iredale, so he could get to his team match. We are all familiar with the 10-Ball Ring Games we have at the 8 and 9-Ball Championships but this version of 10-Ball was an entirely different animal. This Singles was open to any Western BCA player, $40 was the entry and it was handicapped by rating. Grand Master Men raced to 6, Master Men – 5, Grand Master Women & Men’s A – 4, Master Women & Men’s B – 3 and Open Women – 2. Regardless of the pairing, whoever got to their race number first, won the match. There were some interesting pairings and some interesting outcomes. This was single elimination and moved along pretty fast. In what seemed like a very short time we were to the money matches. Leo Violette (MM/LTD), Clark Smith (MM/NPL), Tim Haines (MM/NPL) and Buster Graham () finished 5th(Casino Tour continued on page 24)

WESTERN BCA’S CASINO TOUR 8th and each got $60. John Te (MA/LTD) and Miguel Morfin (MM/LTD) beat Eric Sawyer (MM/ TC) and Glenn Rickard respectively to get to the finals. Eric and Glenn each got $120 for their 3rd/4th finish. John and Miguel played to hill-hill (4-5) with each needing just one more game.

John had the first shot to put the match away but failed and Miguel did not make the same mistake.

Miguel took the match and $500. John got $260 for 2nd. Look for 10-Ball Singles at Western BCA events in the future, starting with fun night at the upcoming 8-ball Championships in March.

There were also 2nd Change tournaments going on as time permitted.

Men’s B 2nd Chance: 9 entries. 1st place and $110 went to Kevin McKibben (TC). 2nd place/$70 went to Phil Squires (LTD).

Men’s A 2nd Change: fielded 15 players. 1st place and $120 went to Mike Owings (LTD), 2nd place/$85 to Wayne Milke (NPL), 3rd place/$65 to Rennie Amadeo (WWA) and 4th/$50 to Randy White (NPL).

Women’s Open: 10 Open Women entered. Dawn Mason (TC) took 1st place and $100. 2nd place/$60 was Windy Manuelito (COB) and 3rd place/$40 was Talia Makus (LTD) Men’s/Mixed Open Teams: 14 Teams. Finalists Nuk & Futz (Larry Maes, Seth Crumby and Clark Smith) and Dave Jones Cues (Dave Jones, Keith Johnson and Mike Stephens) decided to split the combined 1st/2nd place money ($600) because of the late hour. That’s Unfortunate (John Kiske, Angela Jensen and Gloria Villa) and Village #1 (Glen Strode, Tom Mautino and Stephen Cultee) finished 3rd/4th and got $120 each.

Speaking of which, next on the calendar is the Regional 8-Ball Championships at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon March 12-18, 2012 followed by the Northern Quest 8-Ball Tour Stop May 23-27, 2012 at Northern Quest Resort & Casino near Spokane, Washington.

Enough cannot be said for the job the Tournament Staff did before, during and after the tournament. From Event Coordinator Bill Henderson and Tournament Registrar Cindy Doty on down, everyone pitched in and did whatever it took to get the job done. Bad Boys had the tables and lights in place in record time and made sure there were no glitches along the way and worked each day every day to keep the players playing and the brackets updated. The Referee Staff, Darryl Farley, Pat Mowdy and Al Hart and the Tournament Directors, Andrew Monstis, Ray Cunningham and Ted Woodward were professional, polite and made sure the players behaved on the tables and stayed on schedule. Pam Carraway, Payout Supervisor, and her assistant Kathi Giles had the payout checks processed and in the players’ hands with the rapidity we have come to expect. Mike Jensen, Special Events Director, efficiently oversaw the 2nd Chance tournaments and 10-Ball Singles. And my personal heartfelt thanks to my Podium Staff, Ford Rice, who I could simply not have gotten along without, and Elaine Eberly who jumped in and did whatever was asked of her and more.

Quinault Beach will be a tough act to follow. But with what we learned here, future Casino Tour stops should be even better. And the really good news is that we’ll be back at Quinault Beach in 2013!

Behind The Rock Tour is taking the pool scene by storm. This tournament tour is designed for any caliber of players from intermediate level to pros. We play nationwide from local pool rooms with 6 divisions based on player ability. Players compete and get paid weekly. The three lower divisions are played with a true 90% handicapping system which means it’s not necessarily the best player that wins each week, but the players that score the most over their average each week in their division. How do we do it?

We’ve integrated two components into the pool world: The Ghost and the internet.

A new tournament starts every Sunday. Each qualified room plays their event on their time schedule anytime during the week. This individual completion plays a game called 211, otherwise known as 10 ball vs. the Ghost. Players break, take ballin-hand and run balls in rotation until they miss, foul or run-out. Once a player has done one of these three things, that game is over. Players play 11 games against the Ghost for a complete match, a final score and stats for their match. All the players’ matches are uploaded to our website every Saturday night at midnight when we close the tournament. Every Sunday morning we calculate winners and payouts go out every Monday. You will see the results immediately after calculations are done Sunday by noon PST. SWEETHEARTS DOUBLES On February 18, 2012, Eagles club 326 in Bozeman,Mt hosted there annual sweethearts doubles tournament.We had a very tough field this year, with 28 teams.

The format was a race to 3 in both winners and losers bracket. Macy Cristadora and Sky Tigert went up against Molly Jones and Dan Kissner for the championship.With smart play and hot shooting Dan and Molly came out on top.Rounding out third place was Britton Schwartzer and his mom Barb Schwartzer.Hope to see you next year!!!!

WOMEN’S STATE DOUBLES We had an awesome turn out for the womens state doubles this year.This tournament gets bigger and bigger each year. On Feb 25&26 Eagles Club 326 Bozeman,Mt hosted the largest women’s doubles tournament in Montana.There was 49 team turn out for the $600.00 added.This a two day tournament taking the final 8 into Sunday.

The format was a race to 3 in both winners and losers bracket on Saturday.We then did a redraw on Sunday with the races being to four. The competition was tough on Sunday and ten hours later we had crown a champ. This years winners were Brittney and Stephanie Barnes.This was the first time Barnes sister had ever played in this tournament.Congrats! Thanks again to all 801.463.4996 the ladies that showed up. Superfecta Wins Oak Harbor On Saturday and Sunday, February 18-19, 2012, the American Legion in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual 4-Player Team, 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $4,290 in prize money.

16 teams (two more than last year), for a total of 64 players, showed up from the Tacoma, Bothell, Lynnwood, Everett, Mount Vernon, Burlington, Sedro-Woolley, Oak Harbor and Bellingham areas, as well as two players who came down from British Columbia.

As a reminder, our Annual 2-Man Partners 8-Ball Tournament is coming up on Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, 2012.

This year’s tournament format was the usual doubleelimination with the Winners’ Side racing to 9 and the Losers’ Side racing to 7. This year, the Championship Match was a single race to 11.

The tournament was played on 4 – 4x8 Valley bar boxes, all set up at the American Legion. The kitchen ran full-bore all day Saturday and Sunday.

A free 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Hotspot with full, free, tightly secured wireless internet access is now permanently available at the American Legion, and many of this tournament’s participants made good use of this service.

While most of the 30 matches played in the tournament were strongly contended, 5 matches resulted in either 9-1 or 7-1 blowouts. In one match, the Treacherous Tacomans came back from a 5-3 deficit to defeat the Predators (also of Tacoma) 7-5. In several instances, one unexpected mistake resulted in the large-scale pivoting of the entire matches’ fortunes.

The four teams in-the-money were brought back to play Sunday at Noon. The Loser’s Side matches went back to races to 9. For the first time at this annual tournament, all matches were each played on two tables at a time. This was a good thing, as all of these matches were hotly contested and somewhat time-consuming. The Championship Match got underway at just before 4 PM and the tournament was finished at about 5:50 PM. The Bald Spots, whose members were Jim Davenport (Mt. Vernon,

WA), Dana Aldridge (Sedro-Woolley, WA), Dan Hart (Oak Harbor, WA) and Hans Nendsa (Mission, BC), reeled off 6 straight games to come back from 3-8 to win, 9-8, over Soundview Bar & Grill #1 (Jim Conway, Ed Slade, Mark Impson and Dave Jones, all of Everett, WA) to take the “hot seat.”

The challengers in the Championship Match were Superfecta, consisting of John Te, Miguel Morfin, Treon Pham and Clay Belvoir (all from the Lynnwood-Everett area). They were originally sent to the Losers’ Side with an 8-3 loss to the Bald Spots.

Thereafter, Superfecta established a pattern throughout the rest of the tournament of winning the last 4, 5 or 6 games of each match to progress.

In the match for 3rd place, Superfecta won the last 6 games, coming back from 3-8 to beat Soundview #1, 9-8!

Then, in the Championship, with the Bald spots cruising to what seemed the inevitable Championship at 10-2, Superfecta threw down one of the most remarkable comebacks I have ever seen, winning the last 9 games and gang-tackling the Championship, 11-10!

3rd Place went to Soundview Bar & Grill #1. Into 4th Place slid the Treacherous Tacomans, with Jerry Johnson, John Plunkett, Ed Hobbs and Dennis Hostak (all from Tacoma, WA).

Our deepest gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of whom were volunteers, for their wonderful support.

The staff ’s attentiveness and high level of service was the most favorably commented upon aspect of the tournament venue.

Detroit John

We headed up north from our California trip. Lucky was able to make enough money towards his medical expenses. He was doing OK in this stretch, health wise. Good enough that he wanted to make a stop or two before back to the Lucky Q Ranch. We talked about the US Bar Table Championships in Reno but first hit the Northwest for a day or two.

We pulled in to my old haunt Classic Billiards. Lucky said it used to be a fair amount of action in there but dropped off. We walked in and Manny Chau and Mark Vidal were taken off the locals. “The most action there in a while” I said. They hung around a couple of days got a few grand out of the place. Everyone seemed to get up and play not knowing they had no chance.

Little Chris and Alberto did slow them down some on the winning. The pool room junkies tried to get Brad to the Bone to play these two roadies, but Brad politely told them all that his money was for them not the road players…

Lucky was hanging around waiting for the right time to play. On the third day Lucky came in to play only to find out they didn’t show up and left town. Lucky missed the opportunity to make a few from the road team.

Lucky saw Detroit John and he acknowledge him with a head nod and a surprised look. I told Lucky that Detroit John, (Jewelry John as some call him) always wanted to play Lucky again. They played years back when John was on top of his game. John played well that stormy fall day and at one point in the match against Lucky John ran 7 twice, A real show of his top gear. But Lucky prevailed.

Detroit a little embarrassed about that encounter with Lucky has always denied it, ever since. Even his friends who watched that day have thought that he’s trying too hard to repudiate the story. He has always rationalizing the whole thing. John has been heard saying “he’s a player that doesn't play as good as is thought to be, anyway”.

John had privately said he could beat Lucky now!

John didn’t care how good he really was. “Bring him on” was his motto. The truth of it was that John had not played much the past few years. Detroit has had a high gear but is game was not there right now. Still john wanted to play Lucky, well it was Noble!! Lucky standing near the table, John said “Want to play some!!”

Well, Lucky didn’t really want to play John, he was worried that he would be exposed as too good a player and all the action would stop. He didn’t want John’s money. John was very helping and generous to all his friends and folks in the pool room. Went it was inevitable they were going to play at Detroit’s

insistence, Lucky had a plan and it was not to let Detroit John beat him. Lucky was anxious about Detroit’s groupies, Brad to the Bone, Alberto, Sunami, Damascus Shorty and Angie the Striper, that they all might spread the word on Lucky. He didn’t want a crowd. I arranged the match at night when few people would be there. John was there warming up with Gary Crane. He brought his stern peripheral demeanor with him. Even though he had a real teddy bear personality. Lucky thought he was a nice guy trying to act shatterproof. You could see John wanted to play Lucky bad. Lucky was going to make Detroit play hard for it. Play by the set and not less than $1000.

John wanted to play by the game and Lucky wanted to play by the set. John wanted to play this man so bad he gave into the set race to 9 for a $1,000.

Detroit John got the first break. You could see the determination in his eyes. His excitement was evident. He broke and ran out; broke again and ran out. John truly was on fire and in stroke. He was as soaring as you can get playing good pool. He broke and ran out three more times and the score was 5-0.

Everyone was wondering where this game came from it had been years, years that he was able to do this.

Detroit was showing everyone how pool was to be played. John hadn’t even taken off his jacket, and his shirt was hanging out from underneath, and his eyes were glazed. John was pumped. He looked at Lucky and said, half-joking and half-serious, “I am going to thrash you and send you back to wherever you came from.” Lucky just calmly reached for a cinnamon stick to replace the one he was chewing on and then smiled. He said later he was a little perplexed at John’s patterns but was impressed with how he split the cup on every one of his shots. John feeling it ! made some comment like, “Might as well pay me now,” and then broke his 6th rack. He did not make a ball, acted like it was nothing and his lead was safe. He went over and sat in the chair looking at Lucky like Popeye with one eye squint and repeating biting his lip.

Lucky got up, stretched, back a little stiff, hobbled to the table, studied the table. John said before he was going to shoot “hey I don’t remember that you were left handed”. Lucky who never says anything too payers said “did you eat your spinach today” Lucky lined up the ball off handed. I knew lucky played right handed and wondered what the heck Lucky was doing.

Lucky calmly proceeded to run out that game and the next one and the next. As Lucky ran out each game off handed, you could see John’s smugness slowly fade away.

Lucky slowly ran out the set you might of thought he was playing Glenn Atwell. John said, “You can’t make me quit. Rack ‘em”. This time we’ll play to 11.

Lucky came over and asked me if he should run out another set on my friend. I said “I thought your plan

to make him work for it” He’s not working just sitting in the chair. Lucky said he changed his mind. I guess Detroit’s demeanor did that. Lucky said “I want to make a believer out of him, I guess” So Lucky ran out game after game after game before you knew it Lucky was shooting on the hill at the last 9 ball and missed it.

There was a little spark in john’s eye like he had hope.

It didn’t last long. Instead of reaching for his cue John pulled up his pants, tucked in the one flap of his shirt tail, reached in his pocket and handed Lucky some money, all the time giving me the fish eye. I shrugged my shoulders said Pisano….

Since we were friends, all I could say to John was, “Hey, I told you, he was tough and he was “that good.”

Lucky said, “Done for now?” John was a little hot but not mad, wanted to give it another try but? “No Lucky”. John did start out playing like a champion again. It was great to see. John said after that first set, now I don’t have to listen to Brad wanting to give me lessons. Lucky and John sat down and started talking about playing pool in Detroit and playing at Plush pockets. Lucky told a story about beating some guy named Ronnie from Canada. I wasn’t listing to what they were saying. It all seemed to mello out and they were laughing and smiling. Some of those Detroit stories must have been good.

Later that night Lucky gave me $2,000 dollars to give back to John. “John was a real nice guy and a straight up shooter”. When I saw John later and tried to give him his money back. A Deja Vu he didn’t want the money back just like years when they played. I said “if you don’t take this money I would go to the casino and bet it all on the craps tables, one roll”. He said, “Well, OK. I’ll take the money.”

To this day John still avoids saying he ever played and loss to Lucky. Everyone who was present when they played think it suspicious his always talking about as it never happened. He’s still says Lucky is a myth, fantasy and a ghost. Recently John said “There is no one that’s that good,” meaning running out two sets without missing on him. It was Lucky’s advantage to have John spread the word “He doesn’t exist”. Actually, did help keep Lucky from being too visible at the local tournaments or pool rooms. Thanks to John if he had told about playing Lucky might not have gotten another game.

We had plan to go to Seattle area. A friend Askar was going to steer us into action but we turned around went south. Lucky had a big urge to go to the Bar Table championships at the Grand Sierra. The North Dakota Kid was smashing the competition. Lucky Played him some 10 years ago. He’s real good action now……Lucky wasn’t ready to go back to the ranch.

86 men and 23 women came from all over Montana, Idaho, Washington and Canada to play some excellent pool here in Kalispell, MT. Cattlemans Casino and the VFW hosted the men while the Eagles Club laid out the carpet for the women. On the mens side Jeff Boucher went to the drivers seat without a defeat while the rest of us battled it out. In the end Jeff prevailed while Wade Thompson [third place last year] went through John Harmon and Joe Horner to grab second this year.

On the womens side Sheila Clark/Moss was playing well and grabbed the drivers seat. That left Misty Debates, Cindy Barbula, and Carla Horner to fight their way to the finals. Cindy got by Carla but not Misty. So Misty got to play the finals against Sheila but couldn't get by her this year. Great play by everyone.

I would like to thank every player that made their way over here in the middle of winter to play in our tournament. Even though 3 different clubs hosted this little get together and deserve some thanks it wouldn’t have worked without all of you. Well played.

Canadian Champ Kicks Off 2012 Pool Clinics DVPL started the 2012 with the first of a series of women’s pool clinics.

This past February 10th 5 women participants from the women’s league joined in at Rack Em Up in Concord Ca. Once again, Bonnie Plowman a former Canadian 8-Ball Champion and well known in local pool scene, led the clinic, going over basic strokes and some strategy of the game of 8-ball.

Cat Fish Charlie’s. It has one pool table, a new juke box, a pleasant atmosphere and a very friendly bartender.

Twelve women decided to adventure to Milo’s and participate in the open BCA eight ball event run by ‘yours truly ‘ Tina Mendoza.

Cola won her matches against Kristen, Lisa and bartender Jayson, the only man participating in the event. While Tina got passed Angel and Barb, who played a great match and followed 8-ball by mistake. Tina won against Cola and took over the catbird seat.

DVPL offered sponsorship for the first 2 new players who contacted us wanting to be part of clinic. A total of 5 Five willing learners signed up for the event and reaped the benefits of the experience.

At the end of the night…it would be Stacy Wilson who came back around from the looser side and took second place after playing Cola.

Here is some of the feed back received about the clinic: “Bonnies clinic was very helpful and she was a great teacher because she made it fun. She made sure each person understood what she was trying to teach. I remembered what she taught us and used it at league that week”

Congratulations to all the participants for playing…… it was fun. The sponsor matched the pot which was $120. So the pot was a total of $240.

“Having been on a team with Bonnie Plowman before I was looking forward to the clinic with her. She is a very knowledgeable instructor and enjoys teaching people the game and etiquette of pool! She gears the lesson towards your skill level and she is all about making sure you have fun while you learn new things! So when she senses you are getting frustrated with the lesson, she doesn’t hesitate to make a remark that makes you laugh so that you relax and have fun! With her teaching style I saw the progress the other players were making in a short amount of time. She is all about teaching people how to play in a relaxed style, so I would definitely recommend a pool clinic with Bonnie”.
