SUMMER SKIN CARE

All skin can burn, but fairer skin burns more quickly. It is important to stay protected during the summer season with a sunscreen labelled SPF 30 or greater. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which is a measure of UVB ray protection. When you see the word “factor, think of “multiplication factor – a sunscreen will multiply the time it takes you to get a sunburn. The higher the SPF value, the more UVB protection you will get. In addition, look for the words “Broad Spectrum for UVA coverage as well. Drop by and find us in the pharmacy if you need help selecting a sunscreen.

GET ON THE WATER Summer is here and with that comes the joys and excitement of the activities of warm weather. When March rolls around and the snow starts to dissipate, I start the sailing routine. There is always the anticipation of the best sailing season ever. This is a cycle and can be enjoyed every year, at all levels of skill and there is no age limit on cruising. During a hot summer like the one we are currently enjoying, people flock to the cooler parts of the city. This is typically close to or on the water. They look off into the distance to see a sailing yacht surfing the waves. I can tell you that on the hottest and stickiest days of the year, 10 minutes from the dock when you’re in a very comfortable environment on the water in fresh air, it’s all worth it! Sailing is an inclusive sport and doesn’t have to be expensive, however, it can be expensive and exclusive. I was an instructor for many years and believe in the fundamentals that you gain from a group lesson. There is a very effective training system with attainable stratified levels that allows you to expand your horizons in a measured way. Here are three steps to help you get into sailing. STEP ONE Take lessons. This will give you the key learnings of knot tying, wind direction, and basic marine navigation. Also, reference material that you use as a refresher next

By: Travis Perraton

The single biggest and most compelling reason to take lessons is the opportunity to be in charge. Once you learn a little there will be many opportunities to sail on other people’s boats. Rarely will you have the opportunity to make decisions or drive (steer). The best way to learn to sail is to get from Point A to Point B as the captain. Also, you’ll get the boater’s licenses that you require to be on the water, like the BoatSmart operator’s card and harbor license. Search the internet for adult sailing in Etobicoke, Mississauga, or Toronto depending on where you are and you’ll find boaterskill.ca, Port Credit Yacht Club, Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club by the EX, or Harbourfront Centre south of the Dome (my recommendation). STEP TWO Join a co-operative membership club where you can sign out the boats (many different levels here) from the small dinghy sailboats without a motor to a fractional ownership program with fairly sophisticated sailing boats up to 36’. This gives you the feeling of ownership without the work and expense. Some things to remember about taking the tour as the captain; always check weather and accommodate, keep your passage plan short in distance and simple in direction. You’re sailing; what’s the rush? Be respectful of your crew. Say what you’re going to do and repeat, confirm team (Crew)

understanding, execute quietly (no yelling), and debrief for next time. STEP THREE Sail often. Get out early in the season and find ways to get on the water. It’s amazing how quickly the sailing season flies by. What’s funny, though, if done properly it’s longer than the downhill ski season. June, July, August, September, and usually haul-out is around Thanksgiving. Nothing beats experiential learning which is what you do whenever you’re on the water. But always remember when reviewing weather and options, that it’s better to be on the pier wishing you were out there, than on the water wishing you were on the pier. Use good judgement and maintain a contingency plan.

LAKESIDE LIVING

There’s nothing quite like the joys of lakeside living. Exposing your children to the wonders of the waterfont is both rewarding and enriching. Safety is always a primary concern, but once they are confident in their abililty to swim and be in (or on) the water, their horizons are expanded for life. Big smiles and endless laughter are the result.
