WHAT’S UP IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Lot Splitting is a continued concern in the neighbourhood. Signs such as this now line the streets. Opposing signs can be spotted in front of re-developed properties. Some argue that the homes built on split lots are not in keeping with the character of Long Branch. Others are concerned with increased density and a degrading tree canopy. Have an opinion about Lot Splitting in Long Branch? We’d love to hear from you. Email us at etobicokelakeshore@gmail.com

These signs dot the landscape in Long Branch for a reason. Residents remain concerned about road safety, especially along the quiet, otherwise sleepy streets in our lakeside community. Please drive safely and watch for children.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ON REMEMBRANCE DAY? Pauline Duhart Ease Up Organizing

Susan Quaglieri Real Estate by Design

ROMAN Roman recalls stories of his European ancestors during both World Wars. His Slovenian grandfather was sent to a prisoner of war camp for declining to fight during the First World War. His uncle served in World War II and received numerous accolades. Roman remembers our veterans by wearing a poppy and going to the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Long Branch Legion. JOSEE Josée owns The Bread Essentials on Royal York and, although she does not have close relatives who are veterans, her two children learn about Canadian history and Remembrance Day in school. Helping them with their homework always provides her with a ‘refresher’ course on the importance of Remembrance Day.

PETER Peter’s father was in the British Airforce during the Second World War and he remembers the impact the war had on his family. Although he supports our veterans 100%, Peter is a proud human rights activist who feels that instead of investing in war, we should be investing in PEACE and helping the needs of the world as a whole. 10

We caught up with the Chair of the all-volunteer Parade Organizing Committee, Carlos Guerreiro, to bring you the low-down on the Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade; Ontario’s 3rd largest community Christmas Parade.

“As the Parade is in its 26th year, many of those who come out to watch, some with their children, watched the Parade when they were children themselves. Also, the Parade carries a community feel. All our volunteers are from the neighbourhood and the major“This is the official Parade of the ity of entries and sponsors are also city of Toronto,” explains Guerreiro. from the local community.” “The Parade is in its 26th year. Guerreiro offers his advice for making the most of your Parade day. “As there are many thousands of people who come out to watch the Parade, getting a good vantage point requires getting to the route early. The bonus with that is that prior to the Parade’s start, Canada Post and their volunteers collect letters from all the children on the parade route to deliver to Santa. So please remember to get those letters to Santa ready and bring them with you on Parade day. Here are some tips for watching the Parade in comfort: bring your folding chairs, a thermos with hot chocolate, and a blanket to either sit on or keep you extra warm. Much of the route is full of those wanting to see the Parade, but a secret tip is to set up in front of Humber College in by their student residences. It’s always spacious there. Finally, don’t forget to join Santa at Colonel Sam Smith Skating Trail following the Parade at 12:30pm. Enjoy some skating and have your picture taken with Santa. I hope to see you all there. Don’t be shy to say hello to anyone on the Parade committee when you see us on Parade day. From myself and all our committee members, I’d like thank you all for your continued support of our Parade.”

HOLISTIC HEALING

Fall is my favourite season. Changing leaves, crisp air, harvest vegetables, cozy sweatshirts & pumpkin, well…everything! But as we head towards cooler, dryer temperatures, our shifting external environment can affect our internal state of being. Those who follow Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga, would identify Fall as the season of Vata. Generally speaking, Ayurveda is a holistic healing system offering wisdom on maintaining vitality and mind-body-spirit balance while living in tune with nature. Vata describes a set of qualities and characteristics occurring in both our inner and outer worlds, and represents space and air within the five earth elements. Vata is one of the three ‘Doshas’ in the system of Ayurveda and points to an increase in roughness, dryness, coolness, and erratic movement. According to Ayurveda, when too much Vata accumulates in the body and mind, the imbalance may manifest as physical or emotional ailments, including interrupted sleep or insomnia, dry skin, lips and hair, digestive disturbances or constipation, and emotional aggravation such as anxiety, depression, or loneliness. To combat the tendency towards Vata imbalance this time of year, relaxing grounding practices are especially

beneficial. Yoga, of course, is an excellent way to keep these disorders at bay. However, on days you just don’t feel like rolling out your mat, consider the following treatments instead... Reiki: a gentle, hands-on technique where healing energy is channeled to the recipient in order to activate the natural healing processes of the body. This holistic approach promotes the healing of injuries, realigns and detoxifies the body, and aids in the recovery from emotional trauma. Reiki is a deeply relaxing experience that supports the release of pain, tension and stress, while restoring physical and emotional well-being. The Ultimate Soul Spa Experience: this special edition treatment is 2 hours of pure bliss! It includes a 60 minute Luxury Facial, Nourishing Scalp Massage with Oil, Dry Brushing, and Aromatherapeutic Back Massage. Take home dry brush and scalp oil in a gift baggie and learn how to brush at home! Investing in wellness services such as yoga and massage for yourself or a loved one are feelgood gifts that keep on giving. Be good to your body this season. branchyoga.com

ONE HEALTH SERVICES

Hi, Long Branch! I’d like to introduce myself as the Naturopathic Doctor at ONE Health Services; your local integrative health clinic. In case you’re wondering, Naturopathic Medicine is a primary health care system that focuses on treating the root cause of illness and treats the person as a whole, rather than just the symptoms with which they present. This means we take a detailed intake, review relevant investigative studies (e.g. recent blood work), perform a focused physical exam and then present you with a variety of treatment options. While some modalities may be more applicable to an individual, a blend of treatments is generally utilized to help a person on their road to recovery or optimize their general health. This may include acupuncture, nutrient supplementation, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, dietary or lifestyle counselling. Some of my most commonly offered services include hormone balancing, stress management, insomnia 18

support, digestive care, acute care visits (e.g. cold or flu) and chronic disease management (such as diabetes, hypertension or autoimmune diseases). While Naturopathy is not covered by OHIP, it is covered by most private health insurance plans in which we offer direct billing for most major insurance companies. Just a friendly reminder that most health plans “expire” at the end of the year, so you only have a couple months left to make the most of your plan. Drop by the clinic to book your complimentary 15-minute visit and start taking charge of your health! Looking forward to connecting with more of the Long Branch community! ---

MAKING HISTORY IN MIMICO

Built in 1917, Connaught Masonic Hall is located at 23 Superior Avenue, just north of Lake Shore Blvd. It was originally built as a Masonic Hall with a Lodge room on the upper floor and a theatre on ground

level; the first of its kind in the Lakeshore area. The Lodge room is still in use and has been functioning as such for nearly 100 years. Many memers of Mimico’s political and business elite were members of

the four Masonic Lodges that shared the space. In addition to its use as a meeting place for local Freemasons, Connaught Hall also served as a hub for community events, weddings, political rallies,

and charity events. It was even home to Mimico’s court house. Those interested in touring the building or becoming a Mason are encouraged to contact etobicokemasons@gmail.com.
