FAITH, HOPE & LOVE

There’s a word that has been really central for me. When my father was in ICU, when I was about to be unemployed, when my son passed away at only a month old, this word gave me the strength to get up again. It’s a word that is also central to the Easter account - Resurrection. It describes the event of Jesus rising up again after death. Also, it’s a word Jesus used to describe the kind of hope He gives to our worst moments. It literally means, “I stand up again”. There was an incident that took place in the Bible when it seemed like Jesus showed up too late to help a friend who died. A woman said to Jesus, “It’s over.” Have you ever turned in your despair, and in your heart you believe, “It’s over?” So in that moment He looks at this woman and then looks through his vocabulary and He says essentially, “The best word I can use to describe myself is, Anastesi (which is Greek for Resurrection). 10

It’s a compound word that means Ana: ‘up’; and stesi: ‘again’. Up Again. Jesus is the up again God. To follow Jesus is to have up again faith. A faith that stands up again when everything else says stay down. That same power that got Jesus back up again from the grave can also get you back up again. It allows you to rise from rejection and it allows you to stand up from setbacks. Resurrection God got up again and He gives us the power to as well.

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

W-LOOK T.J. O’SHEA’S IRISH SNUG Owner, Colby Kriegl, and his staff pulled off a successful weeks-long renovation, opening in time to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day in style. The new-look Irish Snug is more spacious than before but maintains its original intimate atmosphere. The distinct U-shaped bar remains the centrepiece of the pub, while the back of the space has been expanded to accommodate additional seating. With a few more improvements still in the works, Kriegl, is excited to be open again. The happy faces on Kriegl’s customers don’t lie. Nothing but kind words were said about O’Shea’s. “I love this pub!” exclaims one St. Paddy’s patron. “It’s the best kept secret in Long Branch.” “It’s my first time at O’Shea’s,” says another green-shirted, double-fisting party-goer. “I’ll be back!” As spring sets in, make a visit to O’Shea’s this month to check out their new look and soak up some of their neighbourhood spirit.

COVER STORY // WOODFIRE SANDWICH CO.

16

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

If you live in Long Branch, you know Woody’s Burgers. I mean, you really know them. You know they’re located at Fortieth and Lake Shore. You know they make the best burgers in town. You know they transform any ordinary man into a hero when he comes home with a bag full of burgers and fries. And, you know you’re close to home when you drive down Brown’s Line and you catch the scent of wood burning as you turn onto Lake Shore. But did you know that Woody’s has a sister store?

Here’s a selection of menu items. Be warned. May cause one to salivate uncontrollably.

Enter Woodfire Sandwich Co., stage left, literally.

Salchicha Breakfast Bowl Chorizo, yukon gold potato, sauteed onions, roasted red peppers, 2 fried eggs & hollandaise.

“Over the last 5 years of catering everything from birthdays to corporate events, we found we needed some more space to expand as we took on more events,” explains Greg Brown, owner of Woody’s Burgers and Woodfire Sandwich Co. “While debating for a long time what to do with all our extra space, we decided that what Long Branch needed was a great sandwich place that serves a quick breakfast.” Kudos to Brown who goes out of his way to support local suppliers, many of whom are located within a 2 km radius from Woodfire. Coffee is sourced from Fair Grounds across the street. Fresh baked bread and an assortment of donuts on weekends come from San Remo Bakery on Royal York Rd. Fresh juice is supplied by Juice Concepts on Horner Ave. Produce is from A.J. Lanzarotta on Lakeshore Rd E, and meat is sourced from local Ontario farms that Brown smokes in-house.

Southern Fried Chicken Using a soft brioche bun from Ace Bakery, buttermilk brined chicken breast tossed in our house seasoning and topped with pickle, tomato, sriracha mayo and lettuce. Texas Brisket 12-hour salt & pepper brisket, red cabbage slaw, fried onions, garlic mayo.

Homemade Potato Chips Take home a bag of these gems. We bet you can’t eat just one! Homemade Ice Cream Stay tuned for this seasonal in-house .. creation that rivals Haagen Dazs in terms of consistency. Perfect for those summer jaunts down to Marie Curtis Park with the family or casual strolls along the Lakeshore. So there you have it. If you’re a fan of Woody’s Burgers, and you most likely are, you’ll certainly be pleased to try Woodfire Sandwich Co. Consider it a chip off the old log.

REAL ESTATE // INTRODUCING JOHN KELLY

18

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

As I join the team of editorial contributors at the Etobicoke Lakeshore Press, writing about real estate and lifestyle in South Etobicoke, I struggle as to how to introduce myself to you, the reader. Normally I extend a hand and say, “Hi! My name is John Kelly, I’m a Realtor and work for Re/Max.” But that is what just about every Real Estate Agent does, and I am not like every other Real Estate Agent. So, without further ado.... My name is John Kelly. I’m a South Etobicoke resident who loves our community. I enjoy walking my dog by the lake and playing golf when the weather and my schedule permit. I am also getting married this year and proposed to my fiancée at Humber Bay Shores Park. Oh, and I am a Realtor who works in your neighbourhood.

The first question I get from people is, “Why did you get into real estate, John?” Well, I enjoy working with people. It’s almost impossible to describe the feeling when you are able to be a part of a client’s first home purchase or to get someone more money from their home for their retirement. That is what drives me every morning. I have been working in this community for 5 years now. I don’t just buy and sell homes, though, I want to support the community - especially local small businesses. This year, I have a newsletter that gets delivered every month to residents in South Etobicoke. Within it, I profile two local businesses and highlight their story and involvement within our community. Also, I run a monthly contest for a dinner for 4 at a local restaurant. As the year progresses I have a few projects within the community that will be rolled out. If you ever have any questions about the real estate market, a home, or about me in particular, feel free to contact me anytime. I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you all within the community. Stay tuned for my next article...

YOUR HOME // SPRING CLEANING TIPS

5 Tips to Organizing Your Closets STEP 1

Pick one closet.

STEP 2

Make space on the floor to place closet items . As you start to empty the closet, make 4 piles: KEEP, DONATE, RECYCLE/GARBAGE, and I JUST DON’T KNOW.

STEP 3

Look through the KEEP pile and sort it according to Season and/or frequent use. (ie. Spring is here, so Winter items will go in the back of the closet)

STEP 4

Bag or box items in the DONATE & RECYCLE/GARBAGE piles. Go through the I JUST DON’T KNOW pile and ask yourself 3 questions: Do I ever use it or wear it? Do I still love it? Why do I want to keep it?

(ie. A favourite hand-knitted sweater from Auntie)

STEP 5

Step back and look at the great organizing job you just did. Now you know where everything is and it is easy to get to. Still feeling overwhelmed by clutter? Let me know how I can help.

LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS // WHAT IS THE MEANING In-person parent time. The majority of us had parents, went to high school and blasted through the majority of our “in-person parent time” with a lot of eye rolling, temper tantrums and wishing we were elsewhere. But time is a patient and relentless teacher.

Meaning of Life? Life Ends. Time is our most precious resource. Each and every one of us – over 7 billion people – receive the daily gift of a 24-hour cycle. If time is so precious and finite, funeral director Brad Jones wonders why so many of us waste our time pursuing life endeavours incapable of outliving us. Is it possible to take command over the clock and build a legacy that proves we were here and contributed to the world? I have six children. My youngest is hesitantly stepping toward age 10. My eldest is running full-tilt into his mid-20s. Every day I am reminded by how time just keeps on slipping into the future. (Thank you, Steve Miller.) My kids, and maybe even my wife, wish I’d never discovered the blog “Wait But Why” by Tim Urban. The blog uses diagrams to underscore how short life really is. The author is 29 years old and ridiculously wise. Here’s a gem from the post “The Tail End” that I love quoting whenever my kids don’t want to spend time with me. “It turns out that when I graduated from high school, I had already used up 93% of my in-person parent time. I’m now enjoying the last 5% of that time. We’re in the tail end.” 22

In-person parent time feels different when you’re in mid-life and your parents are elderly and frail. In-person parent time feels different once you’ve buried one or both parents. In-person parent time comes to an end, the tail end, so quickly and so sharply. As a funeral director, I can spot people who are at peace with how they’ve chosen to spend their time. These are people, young and old, who haven’t chased empty pursuits, people, and places. They’re men and women who live in quiet Service to other people. These timeless old souls are always welcome at gatherings like funerals because they hold the delicate space between celebrating a life and mourning a life’s passing. You can only know the dead by the people taking the time to mourn them. The saddest people at a funeral – those in absolute shock and awe from their suffering – are parents who’ve lost a child (the most soul-crushing funerals since time began) or family and friends forced to realize time has run out. When someone we love dies, a signal goes out, a heart-breaking flare or signpost, that shows us the time to make amends, offer grace, beg for clemency, share what’s in our heart, has passed.

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

G OF LIFE? The dead teach us the preciousness of spending our time well and wisely. “The meaning of life is that it ends” is a wise adage. Time well-spent is not about time management or To Do Lists or the newest marketplace saying: making memories. Time well-spent is ironically about being, not doing. When you’re with the people you love, are you fully present? Do the people in your life know you’re dazzled by their gifts and never eclipsed by your phone’s glow? As I move out of mid-life and toward 50, I remind my kids daily about their depleting in-person parent time. But I don’t use words anymore or at least not as much. I use action. I attend basketball games. I eat dinner with them.

I put down my phone or turn off the television when they walk into the room. Every day at the funeral home I am reminded about the preciousness of time. And every day we have the opportunity to take the time to honour how precious life is. Let us be fully present to the people who make our lives beautiful so it’s easier when time strikes and we realize we’re at the tail end. Brad Jones has been a funeral director for over 25 years. He is president and owner of commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd) in Etobicoke. He can regularly be spotted receiving “in-person parent time” by chauffeuring around his six children. You’re welcome to contact Brad by calling 416.259.3705 or BradJones@RidleyFuneralHome.com

WELLNESS // BENEFITS OF AERIAL YOGA Spring is a time of renewal, new growth and, finally, a little bit of sunshine encouraging us to crawl out of hibernation and leap into new adventures. Granted, it’s snowing again as I write this, but at least we’ve got that extra hour of daylight now. Plus, it was warm enough for iced coffee in the park last week. Sunshine and playtime are on the way, folks! As new things begin to bloom outside, why not plant yourself a seed of self-care and give aerial yoga a try? When I started teaching at Branch Yoga & Wellness three years ago, I took my first aerial yoga class with owner, Marlene Sammy, and fell in love with the practice immediately. Mostly because the spinal decompression of suspended inversions makes me feel taller, and at 5-foot-nothing, that’s a benefit I can really appreciate. Seriously though, the aerial silk is many things: a prop to help you flip and fly, a tool for building considerable strength and balance, a safe place to develop body awareness and isolate individual muscles, a return to the playfulness and fearlessness of childhood, and a supportive cocoon in which to sink into effortless relaxation and float away for a while. All that to say, if you haven’t tried aerial yoga yet (or if you have, and you love it like I do), seize this spring day and come hang with us!

NS RUGBY CLUB The Toronto Dragons Rugby Club, who field the only mini rugby program in Ward 6, prepare to take the pitch for the 2018 season. Players of all athletic abilities are welcome to join. The Dragons draw both boys and girls aged 4+ from across Ward 6, fielding teams of various age groups. Weekly training sessions take place at Eglinton Flats with weekend tournaments running throughout the spring and summer at various locations. Rugby is non-contact for the mini’s age group and graduates to modified contact as the players age. All measures are taken to ensure the safety of the players and accredited coaches play an active role in training and skill development. Rugby is a great confidence-booster for many athletes. There is a position for every body type on the pitch and teams are co-ed. The Dragons pride themselves on the fact that they are a family club, where kids as well as their dads don the same jersey on game day. “My son and daughter love playing for the Dragons,” explains one proud parent. “They’re learning to be part of a team and with that comes discipline, dedication, and respect.” Interested players may attend two training sessions for free as an opportunity to try rugby.
